20.

PwC has welcomed 201 graduates and students into its Midlands practice, a 7% increase on its 2015 intake.

 21.
The professional services firm has recruited 132 people to its Birmingham office in the West Midlands, 42 to its Castle Donington office in the East Midlands and 27 to its Milton Keynes office, which serves the South Midlands. The roles are spread across the PwC’s assurance, tax, consulting and deals businesses. They include graduate level positions, undergraduate business placements, internships and higher apprenticeships.

 22.
A high proportion of PwC’s 2016 graduate and student hires in the Midlands have come from universities within the region, including Aston University, Birmingham City University, Coventry University, De Montfort University, Loughborough University, Nottingham Trent University, Staffordshire University, University of Birmingham, University of Leicester, University of Nottingham, University of Warwick and University of Wolverhampton.

 23.
Matt Hammond, regional chairman at PwC in the Midlands, said:

 24.
“Welcoming our new graduates and undergraduates to PwC in the Midlands is always one of the highlights of the year.

 25.
“With over 1,600 staff already across the region, we’re passionate about promoting the Midlands as a fantastic place to live and work. We are delighted that the class of 2016 is drawn largely from the Midlands’ high calibre universities. We’re committed to investing in our next generation of talent and supporting them through their career development.

 26.
“We’re already looking to next year’s recruitment drive and would encourage anyone who is interested to find out more about our graduate and school leavers programmes. Increasingly we are selecting students who want to join the firm straight after their A levels.”

 27.
Ends.

 89.
In the last few weeks HMRC has issued consultation documents in relation to salary sacrifice schemes and termination payments, with the potential to have a significant financial impact on NHS bodies and employees. Payments to personal service companies are increasingly high profile with new legislation from next April leading to increased compliance, tax withholding and National Insurance obligations for NHS bodies with significant fines for non-compliance. All of these contribute to additional cost pressures for organisations and need to be managed. Gary Saunders, a senior manager in our tax team who specialises in employment taxes, will take you through these, and other related topics.

 90.
We will also look at some of the recent developments in the NHS, in particular considering those which impact on the Audit Committee and you, in your role as chair.

 110.

With nearly three quarters of UK CEOs regarding cyber security as one of the top three risks to their organisations, along with over-regulation and geopolitical uncertainty1, it’s clear that increasing cyber threats and the number of recent public breaches is moving cyber security up the list of top business priorities. But if systems were breached and time was ticking, would boards and leadership teams be ready to respond?

 111.
PwC’s Game of Threats™ – an interactive cyber breach simulation for senior executives – has been launched and PwC in the Midlands is one of three expert delivery centres for Game of Threats in the UK. The head-to-head digital card game pits teams of attackers against defenders and is designed to simulate the experience that leadership teams could realistically face in the midst of a cyber attack.

 112.
The game was developed by PwC based on experience of real life cyber attacks clients had faced. Designed to be a non-technical introduction to cyber security, the game sees each team interact with a tablet controller and choose from a number of attack or response cards to play. Through 12 rounds of quick, high-impact decision-making, players face similar pressures to a real cyber attack. Senior executives are given the chance to explore various strategies and familiarise themselves with cyber terminology, whilst seeing the impact of their moves in real time and facing constraints on time, resources and information.

 113.
Run as part of a workshop and education session with PwC’s cyber security experts, Game of Threats helps leadership teams assess and enhance their readiness for cyber incidents, covering how to:

 114.

 115.
Identify potential threat actors that may target an organisation and the tactics they may use;

 116.
Explore how secure their organisation is against these threat actors;

 117.
Recognise the reputational, financial and regulatory impacts of cyber attacks and breach response;

 118.
Understand the potential ramifications and remediation options during and after an attack;

 119.
Understand what can be done to prevent an attack; and

 120.
Learn key cyber security trends and terminology.

 121.

 122.
Chris Wight, risk assurance partner at PwC in the Midlands, said:

 123.
"Cyber security requires leadership and engagement from the very top of a business and is no longer merely a topic for IT. Game of Threats is intended to raise awareness amongst business leaders of the real and increasing nature of cyber threats. The workshop challenges clients to answer questions about how they would cope in a real situation, educating a senior leadership team on current cyber issues, crisis decision-making, and associated communications techniques.”

 124.
After playing Game of Threats, PwC moderators provide a detailed summary of the game, reviewing both teams’ strategies, actions and missed opportunities to prevent – or succeed in executing – a cyber security breach. The moderators also discuss how the game could relate back to the real life security posture and risks facing the client’s organisation, providing real and practical value to executives.

 125.
Neil Ward, cyber security specialist at PwC in the Midlands, concluded:

 126.
“The workshop allows participants to develop a better knowledge of the threat actors, tools and techniques which could threaten their systems and data. We then help players consider how best to prevent, detect and defend against such threats.

 127.
“We’ve taken some of the UK’s largest businesses through the game to date, tailoring it to best reflect their individual situation and risk profile.
