20.
Which Rams primetime game in 2024 are you looking forward to the most?

The Los Angeles Rams will be featured under the lights quite frequently once again in 2024. After just two primetime games last season, the Rams will be playing in that special time slot on five difference occasions this year and it all starts in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. The Rams will play on Sunday Night Football twice, Thursday Night Football twice, and have one game on Monday Night Football. If the Rams want to show the nation that they are legit, they will have plenty of opportunity to do just that. With five games in primetime, there is plenty to look forward to. Here are the Rams five primetime games ranked. Let us know which game you are most looking forward to in the comments.

 21.
1. at Detroit Lions (Week 1 - SNF)

 22.
It’s going to be tough to beat the first primetime game of the season for the Rams in terms of excitement. As teams find success around the same time, short-term rivalries begin to form. From 2017-2020, that team was the New Orleans Saints for obvious reasons. The Rams and Saints were both among the NFC’s teams at the time and it was all capped off by the alleged controversial call in the conference championship game.

 23.
These two teams saw each other last year in the wild card round with the Lions coming out on top by one point with a controversial ending of its own. The Rams won the Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford after the blockbuster trade with the Lions. Given the recent history between these franchises, Week 1 on Sunday Night is sure to be a barn burner.

 24.
2. at San Francisco 49ers (Week 15 - TNF)

 25.
While there will be a lot of anticipation for the Week 1 matchup against the Lions, the most important primetime game is the one in Week 15 against the 49ers. This game will be played late in the season and the winner will likely have a leg up on the NFC West heading into the season’s final stretch.

 26.
There is a chance that both teams head into this game with at 8-5 or 9-4 record. The Rams will have somewhat of a disadvantage as they have a tough matchup against the Buffalo Bills the Sunday before. However, the 49ers could have a challenging game agains the Chicago Bears the week prior as well. If the Rams are going to win the NFC West, this is a must-win game.

 27.
3. vs. Miami Dolphins (Week 10 - MNF)

 28.
The game against the Miami Dolphins won’t have playoff or division implications. However, it will be Jalen Ramsey’s return to SoFi and his first time against the Rams since the team traded him last summer. There aren’t any hard feelings between the two sides and Ramsey will almost certainly get a positive reception.

 29.
As for the game itself, the Dolphins have tended to flame out against strong opponents in the past. With that said, there could be a lot of offensive fireworks in the game. The Dolphins defense has a lot of question marks and the same can be said about the Rams. This could come down to which quarterback comes up big for their team down the stretch.

 30.
4. vs. Philadelphia Eagles (Week 12 - SNF)

 31.
It’s going to be interesting to see what the potential playoff implications are with this game. There is a chance that these two teams are fighting for seeding among the top-four places in the NFC and winning this game would be huge. However, the Philadelphia Eagles also stumbled down the stretch last year. It is worth wondering if that carries over into this season.

 32.
The Eagles got the best of the Rams early in the year in 2023, but had they played later on, it’s hard to say that Los Angeles wouldn’t have come out on top. Now, the Rams will get the Eagles in the back-half of the season as they navigate life without Jason Kelce.

 33.
5. vs. Minnesota Vikings (Week 8 - TNF)

 34.
Ranking this game fifth isn’t to say that this is going to be a bad game or that fans won’t be looking forward to it. In reality, depending on where both teams are at, there could be wild card tiebreakers on the line here. The chess match between Sean McVay and Brian Flores will also be an interesting one to watch.

 35.
However, the Minnesota Vikings are a team in a competitive rebuild. Nobody quite knows what to expect out of JJ McCarthy during his rookie season. There a chance that the Vikings are a year away from being seriously competitive. The Vikings with Flores and the talent on defense could give the Rams some trouble. Jared Verse will likely be looking to get a rookie-on-rookie sack going up against McCarthy. Still, the Rams should come out on top.

 36.

 57.

 58.
 59.
Puka Nacua joined Maxx Crosby’s podcast and ranked the top-5 wide receivers in the NFL

The offseason can be pretty quiet which allows players to go on podcasts more often than they are able to during the year. Earlier this week, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua joined Maxx Crosby’s podcast “The Rush with Maxx Crosby”. Crosby and Nacua talked how Cooper Kupp mentored him, how special Matthew Stafford is, his first interaction with Aaron Donald as well as a range of other topics.

 60.
One of those topics was how Nacua ranked the NFL’s best wide receiver. Nacua was asked by Crosby to rank his top-5 wide receivers in the NFL in order and not including himself. Nacua ranked the top-5 as:

 61.

 62.
Justin Jefferson - Minnesota Vikings
 63.

 64.
Ja’Marr Chase - Cincinnati Bengals
 65.

 66.
Tyreek Hill - Miami Dolphins
 67.

 68.
Davante Adams - Las Vegas Raiders
 69.

 70.
Cooper Kupp - Los Angeles Rams

 71.

 72.
On Kupp, Nacua said,

 73.
“Every time Coop’s out there, man. If it’s Devante Adams, it’s Cooper Kupp...Being a complete receiver is something different, but that’s what makes being a Devante Adams, a Cooper Kupp that much more elite. Because they just put me out here to run routes. They know I’m out here because I can get open against you - every single one of you out here. I’m going to get open no matter what. That’s what’s crazy. Not everybody gets that luxury and that opportunity. There’s an elite group and then there’s an elite-elite to be the best of the best.”

 74.

 75.
Had Kupp been coming off of his triple crown season, there’s no doubt that Nacua would have ranked his teammate higher. However, dealing with injury last year, Nacua made sure to give other wide receivers his respect as well. That’s not to say that the Rams second year wide receiver didn’t have plenty of good things to say about Kupp. Crosby and his crew asked Nacua about Kupp’s mentorship and he had nothing but good things to say,

 76.

“They had the breakfast club which I didn’t know was a thing...Coop would take the time and talk to me, especially those first five weeks before he came back. He’s the man. One of the best route-runners of all-time. We started having those conversations on the side after that Week 1 in Seattle and then that happened for the five weeks that he was gone.”

 77.
With Nacua getting opportunities that he may not have gotten in a normal year had Kupp been healthy, it put him in situations that he may not have been in otherwise. It forced him to have to look at the game within the small details. Kupp has gotten a full offseason to get healthy coming off of the ankle injury of 2022 and hamstring injury last year. The Rams should get to see both players take that next step as a wide receiver pairing.

 78.
Nacua was asked who his best wide receiver duos are. Said Nacua, “I gotta put me and Coop up there. There’s this guy Matthew Stafford back there. We’re going to give everyone a good mixup this year for sure.”

 79.
On podcasts hosted by other NFL players, the guest players tend to open up more as it is more of a casual conversation rather than a full-fledged interview. That was certainly the case when Nacua joined Crosby.

 99.
 100.
Since 2017, 87% of draftees begin on the initial 53.

If the Los Angeles Rams OTAs and training camp run true to form, most, if not all the 2024 rookies are a good bet to make the opening roster. Since the 2017 union of General Manager Les Snead and Head Coach Sean McVay, L.A. has kept 87 percent of drafted rookies on the initial 53. There were five others who began their careers on the Injured Reserve List (IR) and would go on to a spot on the roster when healed.

 101.
That’s the good news, but while the Rams certainly put in the time to develop their rookies, only a relative very few have been given less than three years, L.A. does not hesitate to cut bait after that period and move on to the next wave of recruits. Whether it be through injury settlements, trades, outright cuts, and/or not offering second contracts, Snead and McVay have only 26 of their total 67 draft picks (39%) currently on the roll. 21 of those are from the 2022 and 2023 drafts.

 102.
Here’s a review of the Rams 67 picks since 2017 providing a list of possible replacements. Will L.A. again find room on the opening roster for this year’s 10 selection?

 266.
Who will be the odd man out in 2024?

 267.
While each season brings in a completely different class composition, whether it be in size, position and/or skillset, the Rams braintrust puts their money where their mouth is. Rookies in L.A. are given time to develop.

 268.
And it’s not just limited to early round draftees, of 23 Round 6 and 7 players from 2017 through 2022, three were cut after their rookie camp and four more after their rookie year. The remaining 16 were/are given an average of three years to develop.

 269.
I really like this draft class as a “roster stocker”, adding and/or supplementing depth. I’ll venture the Rams follow suit from last year, finding room for the whole group on the opening 53. Do you envision a rookie odd man out?

Coming out of the 2024 draft, the Rams are 14th in ESPN’s poll, the same position they were in after free agency.

 305.
ESPN picked the Rams’ most improved unit as the secondary, which isn’t wrong; the additions of Kamren Curl, Darious Williams, Tre’Davious White and even Kamren Kinchens will make a big difference in the defensive backfield.

 306.
The Rams did a lot to improve their defensive front in the draft, but they still had Aaron Donald on their roster at the end of the 2023 season. Last season, Los Angeles had 10 interceptions — tied for 23rd in the NFL. Improving the secondary was a focus during free agency and the draft, with the Rams signing cornerbacks Tre’Davious White and Darious Williams and safety Kamren Curl and selecting safety Kamren Kinchens in the fifth round.

 307.
The only NFC West team ranked higher than the Rams is the 49ers, who are No. 2 behind the top-ranked Chiefs. Of the teams in the top 10, the Rams will face six of them in 2024, which shows how difficult their schedule will be.”

 349.
“In earlier eras of pro football, I don’t think that Jalen Milroe would be a prized draft prospect. He would have been treated like Tee Martin, the QB who followed Peyton Manning at Tennessee, won a National Championship and was drafted in the 5th round in 2000, one of the QBs taken ahead of Tom Brady. On a triple option team, Milroe would be Tommy Frazier shedding Florida Gator defenders on his way to the end zone. Nearly a quarter century after Martin’s draft, offensive football has evolved and dual threat QBs are more viable and valuable as potential franchise starters.

 350.
Instead of being profiled as just a backup QB candidate, Milroe is projected as a 1st round prospect. Eddie Brown for the San Diego Union-Tribune mocked Milroe to the Rams at pick 18 in the 1st round of the 2025 NFL draft. In a mock draft by TDN, Milroe was the top pick in next year’s draft.

 375.
LA will get to play at Chicago before the cold of winter kicks in for the first time since 2012

The Los Angeles Rams have been schedule to play in at least one NFC North away game every season since 2015. In that time span, the Rams are only 2-8 on the road when facing the four Midwest teams. This season though, it looks as though schedule makers are doing LA a favor, lining up all of their NFC North opponents before Week 8.

 376.
Instead of fighting the cold of years past, the Rams will play their only outdoor NFC North matchup against Chicago in late September. It should be a stark contrast from their last trip to Soldier field, a late December game in 2018 where the team suffered a 15-6 loss in the bitter Chicago cold.

 380.

 381.
The consistent scheduling of cold weather, outdoor games late in the season is actually something that has been brought up to the NFL previously by the Rams.

 382.
Last year, after having to head to Green Bay for the third time in the three straight years, head coach Sean McVay and brass actually tried to request not to be scheduled in Lambeau late again. According to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times, the Rams requested to play their 2023 road game against the Packers in either September or October, however their request was denied, and they were scheduled a third post-October Green Bay game in-a-row.

 383.
At the time, Rams COO Kevin Demoff said he was disappointed that the league didn’t honor the Rams’ only request.

 384.

“They were close,” Demoff said of the NFL scheduling their 2023 Lambeau trip in early November. “It’s still disappointing. To me, that’s one I thought they should have honored.”

 385.
While weather cannot be blamed fully for a loss, the fact is that the Rams are much better vs the NFC North teams when playing on the West coast. Despite their 2-8 record on the road, since 2018, Los Angeles is actually 6-0 vs. the North when getting to play them at home.

 386.
The NFC North is looking to be one of the strongest divisions in the league heading into 2024. With the emergence of QB Jordan Love in Green Bay, and the additions of wide receivers Keenan Allen, rookie Rome Odunze and first overall pick QB Caleb Williams to Chicago, as well as Detroit’s recent success, the North could challenge the NFC West for the title of most competitive NFC division. The Rams have a tough schedule before Week 8, however if they can battle through the North gauntlet, it should prepare them for what could be a slightly more favorable schedule in the back half of the season.

 406.
 407.
Beaux Limmer could end up as a steal and the most important depth piece for Rams on the offensive line

When the Los Angeles Rams entered the offseason, there was some uncertainty on who the team would play at center. With Coleman Shelton’s contract set to expire and Brian Allen released, the Rams didn’t have an active center on the roster. Following the Senior Bowl, it was thought that they could draft a center such as Jackson Powers-Johnson who dominated in drills in Mobile. Instead, the Rams confirmed what some were thinking by saying that Steve Avila would move to center, a position that he played at TCU.

 408.
Still, even with Avila moving to center, the Rams lacked depth at the position. They had Mike McAllister who spent the year on the practice squad, but he isn’t someone who could be trusted in a pinch if necessary. Instead, the Rams drafted Arkansas’ Beaux Limmer in the sixth-round.

 409.
When analysts had the Rams drafting Powers-Johnson following the week in Mobile, they had the position right, but not the player. Limmer was also at the Senior Bowl and performed well in individual drills and team practices. In the clip below, he actually does a nice job blocking his future teammate Braden Fiske.

 410.

 411.

 412.
Arkansas’ Beaux Limmer has been overshadowed a little bit at center. Nice pass pro rep here.

Good mid-round option in the draft. pic.twitter.com/lRDDcJ1JkG
— Blaine Grisak (@bgrisakTST) February 1, 2024

 414.
 415.
 416.

 417.
Limmer continued his strong draft process into the Combine in Indianapolis where he tested really well. Limmer’s 36.5-inch vertical was tied for second among all offensive linemen. He also showcased his strength with 39 reps on the bench press. That was seven more reps that any other offensive lineman and the most for any participant at any position. As The Athletic’s Dane Brugler noted in “The Beast”, Limmer was considered the strongest player on the team by teammates. According to his strength coach, he squatted 700-pounds last July and could have done more had they let him.

 418.
Somehow, despite a 9.8 Relative Athletic Score that athletically compared him to an all-pro player in Joe Thuney, Limmer continued to slide under the radar. And he didn’t just slide under the radar, he slid until the sixth round.

 419.

 422.
Beaux Limmer RAS

 423.

 424.
This was one of the more experienced interior offensive linemen in the draft who made 36 consecutive starts in the SEC. Limmer finished his career with 41 starts that included 28 at right guard, 12 at center, and one at left guard. For the Rams to be able to get a player of Limmer’s caliber and experience in the sixth-round is a steal and great value.

 425.
While Limmer won’t start for the Rams, he will be a very important depth piece along the offensive line. Again, outside of McAllister, the Rams didn’t have an experienced backup center behind Avila. Acquiring a player with that experience at center and versatility along the inside was imperative for the Rams during the draft and they may have gotten the best player for that. In his draft profile of Limmer, Brandon Thorn of the Trench Warfare substack and Bleacher Report said,

 426.

“Overall, Limmer is a very athletic, lean, nimble blocker with wiry strength who can strain to finish blocks. His extensive guard experience should at least help him cross-train across the interior as a swing backup in the NFL right away.”

 427.
Having that versatility on the interior is important, especially as it is a position in which the Rams could be the most vulnerable when it comes to injury. The Rams signed Jonah Jackson to a large contract this offseason. However, Jackson has missed four or more games in each of the last two seasons.

 428.
In the case that Jackson is hurt, the Rams obviously have Joe Noteboom who has left guard experience. With that said, Noteboom has an injury history as well or could potentially simultaneously be filling in for Alaric Jackson at left tackle who has missed time the last two years. If the Rams moved Avila back to left guard, Limmer could step in at center or simply slide in at guard in a pinch. During a pre-draft interview with The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, Limmer said,

 429.

“I can see myself playing any of the three interior positions. I have more experience at guard and I think I’m a guard at heart, an elite guard at that. I had to play center this past season because that’s what Arkansas needed me to do...I have three years of elite guard tape though.”

 430.
When the Rams shifted to a new block scheme in the run game this past season, the idea was to be able to go at defenses rather than always going to side to side as they did in the wide zone. The start of that was drafting Avila at 333-pounds and then trading for Kevin Dotson at 322-pounds. That continued into this offseason when the Rams moved on from a lighter and not as strong player in Shelton while also adding Jackson at 311-pounds.

 431.
Rebuilding a position group can take some time and that’s what the Rams have been doing. The next phase of that was to incorporate that mentality into the depth. That’s exactly what they’ve done by adding Limmer. Said Limmer,

 432.

“I’ve shown teams how physical and strong I am throughout this pre-draft process. I’m not the heaviest dude in the draft by any means. I think I make up for that with terrific strength...If you watch my film, you’ll see me moving the biggest defensive linemen off the ball in the SEC. That was no joke. I bring physicality to the table.”

 433.
The Athletic’s Dane Brugler noted that while watching tape, “the term “MAN” (mean and nasty) showed up numerous times” in his scouting notes.

 434.

 435.

 436.
One of my favorite reps of the day was Beaux Limmer getting under/inside and displacing Sweat off the ball despite giving up 50+ pounds. #leverage pic.twitter.com/EzAPPBNfty
— Brandon Thorn (@BrandonThornNFL) January 31, 2024
 437.

 438.
 439.
 440.

 441.
For now, Limmer will be an important depth piece for the Rams offensive line. He gives them much-needed center depth with the ability to step in at guard if Noteboom is unavailable. It’s also worth noting that the Rams do have an ‘out’ in Jackson’s contract in two years. That would put Limmer on the back-half of his rookie deal, potentially putting him in position to start.

 442.
Following a disastrous 2022 season that saw numerous injuries to the Rams offensive line, the front office has put a larger emphasis on being ready for that scenario if it happens again. A change to the blocking scheme only gave them a larger reason to re-build that position group. Limmer may only be a sixth-round pick, the importance of what he provides in depth and as a player that can slide in at multiple positions while holding his own can’t be understated.

 463.
The Rams traded up for Braden Fiske and PFF thinks they got the best DT they could get

The Los Angeles Rams traded up to get defensive tackle Braden Fiske out of Florida State and according to PFF’s Trevor Sikkema, they got the best fit for their defense that they could get in the draft. Sikkema, who incorrectly cited a trade cost that would have been easier to swallow than giving up next year’s second round pick, named the best fit at each position in the draft. The Rams and Braden Fiske were the choice for defensive tackle:

 464.

I am very excited to watch Fiske this season. He was excellent during his time at Western Michigan, racking up 89 total pressures in his final two years there. However, he was winning mainly off athleticism and looked out of control at times. At Florida State in 2023, it took him about half a season to get warmed up to ACC play, but once he did, he was very impactful. The Rams traded a 2025 third-round pick to move just 13 spots to draft Fiske, which means they have high hopes for him. He wins with incredible quickness, and we certainly know the Rams are a team that prioritizes winning with quickness at that spot.

 465.
The Rams actually traded a 2025 second-round pick, not a third, which was cited by ESPN as the biggest overpay in at least six years. L.A. also traded pick 155 to move up 13 spots for Fiske and to reunite him with college teammate Jared Verse, the Rams first round pick.

 466.
Defensive coordinator Chris Shula will be looking to Verse and Fiske to have an immediate impact similar to the rookie contributions of Kobie Turner and Byron Young in 2023. Those four, Bobby Brown, and Ernest Jones likely represent the core of L.A.’s front-seven, but the team also picked defensive tackle Tyler Davis in the sixth and edge Brennan Jackson in the fifth so you never know if maybe a Puka Nacua-esque player could emerge in the next few months.

 467.
Fiske will get an immediate opportunity to win a starting role, if nothing else, but as Sikkema noted there could be a developmental period necessary if his pro career is anything like his college career.

 489.
 490.
How much of an impact will Jared Verse have as a rookie with the Rams?

Despite OTA’s and training camp not too far away, it still seems hard to believe that the Los Angeles Rams will be without Aaron Donald this season. The Rams will be looking for multiple players to step up and produce some level of impact on the defensive pass rush. One of those players is first-round pick Jared Verse.

 491.
To be clear, the Rams aren’t going to ask Verse to replace Donald. That would be an unfair an impossible task. Sean McVay said as much after the draft,

 492.

“We’re never going to ask anybody to replace Aaron, but you do want to continue to build the front and Jared represented the opportunity to do that.”

 493.
The board fell the right way for the Rams on draft night. With the first 14 selections all being awarded to players on the offensive side of the ball, defensive talent continued to drop. Instead of a player like Verse being selected in the top 10 or the top-15, he wound up right in the Rams’ lap at 19th overall.

 494.

 495.

 496.
I 100% agree.

You can't replace AD, but Turner can be that powerhouse 3 tech. the Rams need.

The addition of Verse & Fiske in the Draftshould be helpful as well.

Hoecht & Turner as true 3 techs is going to be fun.
-- pic.twitter.com/6Vi7C8QzIE
— Cody Alexander (@The_Coach_A) May 7, 2024
 497.

 498.
 499.
 500.

 501.
There will be a lot of pressure in Verse’s rookie season to be the face of the Rams rush and make an immediate impact. The Rams are a team looking to capitalize on what is a two-year window and a big part of that is developing their young pass rusher. Verse is a player with a high floor coming into the NFL. As The Athletic’s Dane Brugler said, “His physical traits and competitive football temperament give him a high floor as an NFL starter.” Brugler compared Verse to Dante Fowler. Still, even with a high floor, rookie edge rushers also tend to take time for production to start showing on the stat sheet. Looking at edge rushers drafted between 15-32 since 2020:

 502.

 503.
Will McDonald: 3 sacks, 12 pressures

 504.
Myles Murphy: 3 sacks, 15 pressures

 505.
Felix Anudike-Uzomah: 0.5 sacks, 11 pressures

 506.
Jermaine Johnson: 2.5 sacks, 14 pressures

 507.
George Karlaftis: 6 sacks, 49 pressures

 508.
Jaelan Phillips: 6.5 sacks, 39 pressures

 509.
Kwity Paye: 4 sacks, 39 pressures

 510.
Payton Turner: 1 sack, 10 pressures

 511.
Greg Rousseau: 4 sacks, 36 pressures

 512.
Odafe Oweh: 5 sacks, 49 pressures

 513.
Joe Tryon: 4 sacks, 33 pressures

 514.
K’Lavon Chaisson: 1 sack, 29 pressures

 515.

 516.
An argument can be made that Verse shouldn’t have lasted past pick 15 and very likely could outperform past players selected within those slots. Still, the absence of Donald can’t be understated.

 517.
Since 2017, only two players not named Donald have accumulated 10 or more sacks in a single season on the Rams defense. Those two players are Dante Fowler and Leonard Floyd who each accomplished the feat once.

 518.
With ‘99’ on the roster, there was something called the “Aaron Donald effect”. For a player that was consistently double-teamed more than any other player in the NFL, it was obviously going to create opportunities for other players.

 519.
The best way to truly showcase this is with the ‘quality’ of sacks for the players playing alongside Donald. In 2021, Floyd had 9.5 sacks. According to Brandon Thorn’s “True Sack Rate” metric that is published on Trench Warfare, seven of Floyd’s nine sacks were considered “low quality”. A “low quality” sack is defined as, “a sack coming as a result of being unblocked or a scheme such as a twist or stunt, in which no special skill or move was required in order to record the sack.” Floyd had a strong 2020, but again, out of his 10.5 sacks, five were considered “low quality”. Even with Byron Young last year, 30 of his 41 pressures were considered “low quality pressures.”

 520.
That’s not to say those sacks or pressures were bad or the players didn’t earn them. It’s also not to say that Verse can’t or won’t have some success. There will be ebbs and flows or peaks and valleys which is the case for most rookie. However, the point here is simply to exemplify the type of effect that Donald had on the players around him and the opportunities he helped create. That’s not a benefit that Verse will have.

 521.
ESPN’s Seth Walder has a prospect sack model that forecasts the number of sacks a player will record over the first three seasons of their career. That number for Verse is 13 and an average of 4.3 sacks per season.

 522.

 523.

 524.
Results from my prospect sack model!

This model forecasts the number of sacks a player will record over the first three seasons in their career. pic.twitter.com/HcbbnTirFX
— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) May 15, 2024
 525.

 526.
 527.
 528.

 529.
Aaron Schatz formerly of Football Outsiders has a similar model that projects out the first five years of a player’s career. In Schatz’s model, Verse is projected to have 24.4 sacks for an average of 4.9 sacks per season. On Verse, Schatz said,

 530.

“Verse had nine sacks in each of his two seasons after transferring to Florida State from Albany. He ranked fourth in this class in the Explosion Index based on combine drills — he posted a 4.58-second 40, a 35-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-7 broad jump. He’s held down a little in the projections by a relatively slow 3-cone time of 7.31 seconds.”

 531.
Schatz also compared Verse historically to Nick Perry and Joey Porter. After being drafted in the third round, Porter had two sacks as a rookie and that jumped to nine in year two. Nick Perry was a former first round pick for the Green Bay Packers and had only two sacks and four sacks in his first two seasons.

 532.
Verse wasn’t highly recruited coming out of high school and ended up at the University of Albany after running track and playing tight end at Central Columbia High School. After transitioning to defensive end, Verse had 10.5 sacks at Albany and transferred to Florida State. In his first season transferring from the FCS level to the ACC, Verse had nine sacks and won the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

 533.
Said Snead after the draft,

 534.

“The cool thing about him is where he started at Albany, transferred to Florida State. He might have gone about where he went tonight last year, but he decided to stay back. He’s just one of those guys that you want to just watch another game on because you can tell he cares about football.”

 535.
He returned for a fifth season to complete his eligibility. Expected to take another step forward, Verse once again had nine sacks with the Seminoles in 2023, but helped lead one of the best defenses in the country.

 536.
The question here isn’t necessarily about opportunity. Verse will have plenty of opportunity to make an immediate impact. However, the underlying point here is that rookie edge rushers typically tend to take until year three until there impact is felt. That’s not always the case of course, but most of the time, year three is when edge players take that jump.

 537.

 538.

 539.
-These numbers may *feel* low, but I do not believe they are: here’s this same model run over past draft classes – leaving out each year individually from the training set – and their resulting sacks.

Note "actual" sacks are estimates for players with 1-2 years played. pic.twitter.com/dPzbUmXIPx
— Seth Walder (@SethWalder) May 15, 2024
 540.

 541.
 542.
 543.

 544.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the Rams utilize their young pass rushers. Byron Young hit a wall halfway through his rookie season. Michael Hoecht also brings some experience while Nick Hampton and Ochaun Mathis hopefully add some rotational ability. Add in interior pass rushers like Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske and from a schematic standpoint, the Rams should be able to generate some pressure. It could create a much more cohesive unit that generates pressure together instead of it all coming from one place.

 545.
Justin Melo of The Draft Network recently predicted who would be the NFL Rookie Sacks Leader. Melo had Verse as a worthy underdog in the conversation and said,

 546.

“The Rams are a defense in transition after losing Aaron Donald to retirement earlier this offseason...Jared Verse and his Florida State teammate Braden Fiske will join them on one of the most ascending defensive lines in the league. Getting consistent pressure off the edge was an issue for the Rams. Verse projects as an immediate workhorse starter opposite Young. Verse pairs first-step quickness with natural athleticism to be a consistent sack threat. Verse leaves Florida State after recording nine sacks apiece across his final two seasons. He’s going to receive the snap count required in Los Angeles to potentially lead all rookie defenders in sacks.”

 547.
Verse will likely have an impact throughout his rookie season. However, it’s also important to manage expectations and understand that Verse’s first year in the NFL is bound to come with the typical rookie ups and downs. The first-round pick will be one of the more talented edge rushers that the Rams have had under McVay and he should be a face of the defense for years to come.
