47.
For the past week, the World Poker Tour has ensconced itself in the pleasant climes of the Playground Poker Club in Montreal, Canada. But it has not been a pleasure trip, at least for the WPT and its staff, and the tournament players participating in their events also have been working hard. Day 1A of the WPT Montreal is in the books and, after ten levels of competition, 36 players remain that will move along to Day 2 this weekend.

48.
49.
50.
51.
$2 Million Guaranteed Prize Pool

52.
53.
54.
55.
The first of the three-Day Ones was on tap for participants at the Playground on Thursday. The $3500 buy-in event, with unlimited reentries for players, was looking to best the $2 million (Canadian, roughly $1.47 million U. S.) guarantee placed on the tournament by the Playground and WPT officials. The players were facing a long day as ten, sixty-minute levels were on tap for the players as they looked to build the prize pool.

56.
57.
58.
59.
In the tournament poker world, the first action of a multiple Day One schedule is the smallest as players tentatively test the waters. On Day 1A, 127 entries were taken in, a bit of a slow start but one which should increase as Days 1B and 1C play out on Friday and Saturday, respectively. These numbers were not a concern for runners on the felt Thursday as they were there to build a stack.

60.
61.
62.
63.
The players had 50K in chips to work with at the start, and several players put those chips to work quickly. Baseem Nseir was locked up with Hagop Ketendjian on a J-6-5-6 flop and turn with a growing pot between them. A King completed the board and Ketendjian checked his option to Nseir, who fired off a bet of 12,500. Ketendjian looked at the board, which also presented three clubs for a flush potential, and made the call, which turned out to be the wrong decision; Nseir, in the cutoff, turned up a surprising 6-3 for turned trips, and Ketendjian sent a sizeable chunk of his stack over to Nseir.

64.
65.
66.
67.
Dinnertime!

68.
69.
70.
71.
By the time the dinner bell rang, some players had made substantive moves towards being around for the final table next week. Anthony Piacquadio was one of those players, sitting as the only player over the 300K mark with his 324,800 in chips. There were a couple of other challengers in Spencer Grigull (272,700) and Spencer McLean (231,300), but the remainder of the field was under the 200K level.

72.
73.
74.
75.
You do not win a poker tournament on Day One, and you certainly do not win it before dinnertime. Piacquadio would clash with Kevin DiPasquale on a K-Q-2-A-5 board after DiPasquale moved all in on the river. Pondering his fate – a call was for all his chips – Piaquadio decided that DiPasquale was bluffing on the three-heart board and called the bet. Piaquadio left the Playground immediately after making the call once DiPasquale showed pocket Aces, leading all the way in the hand turning an unnecessary set to scoop the over 300K pot.

76.
77.
78.
79.
There was only one player who was able to top Dipasquale on the Day 1A leaderboard. Dongwoo Ko was able to navigate the stormy Playground waters to hold 456,500 in chips, good for the lead at this mark of the tournament. Two more Day Ones remain to add in, but here are the Top Five of the thirty-six players who were able to survive Day 1A:

1. Dongwoo Ko, 456,500
2. Kevin DiPasquale, 364,500
3. Choon Pyo Chun, 310,000
4. Travis Stams, 303,500
5. Ko Maddock, 284,000

80.
81.
82.
83.
These players are happy with their position and will move on to Day 2 on Sunday, but players lower in the standings maintain the option of abandoning their stacks and taking another shot. Day 1B begins at 11 AM on Friday (and will substantially add to the prize pool) before Day 1C’s flood of participants takes the floor on Saturday. By the close of the late registration period, which is the start of play on Day Two on Sunday, we should know whether the $2 million guarantee has been met and the WPT Montreal (the tournament has not been played since 2019, when it crushed its guarantee) will then kick into finding its next champion.

112.
113.
The Mirage will be no longer two months from now. On Wednesday, Resort President Joe Lupo gathered staff to let everybody know that the famed Las Vegas Strip casino and hotel will close on July 17, 2024 as it prepares for its transformation into Hard Rock Las Vegas.

114.
115.
116.
117.
It was originally thought that The Mirage would close in phases and thus stay partially open throughout the three-year process, but that isn’t happening. The property will be closed completely during the renovation. As such, about 3,300 employees will lose their jobs, including 140 who have been there since The Mirage opened in November 1989.

118.
119.
120.
121.
A resource center has been setup at The Mirage to help staff members find new jobs. There will also be career fairs where other casinos will look to hire people who will be out of work in a couple months. Of course, with the Tropicana recently closing, competition for jobs will be high. Lupo said that there will be openings at other Hard Rock-owned properties around the country, but relocation is a tough ask.

122.
123.
124.
125.
The centerpiece of the new Hard Rock Las Vegas will be a 660-foot-tall guitar-shaped hotel tower, like the one at Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida.

126.
127.
128.
129.
Beloved attractions will be just memories

130.
131.
132.
133.
Gone will be the iconic volcano, built as a way to fill the gap between the street and buildings themselves. Local residents tried to petition to get Hard Rock to keep the free attraction, but to no avail.

134.
135.
136.
137.
Also out is the wonderful Cirque du Soleil Beatles “Love” show and its specially-designed theater. The show’s producers confirmed last month that July 7 will be its last day. It wasn’t Cirque’s decision – it was all up to Hard Rock. And it is unlikely that the production will tour, at least in its current format.

138.
139.
140.
141.
“If it has a life beyond this venue, it will need to change the format a little bit. The theater is so unique, it’s a 360-degree stage and very deep,” said Cirque du Soleil CEO Stéphane Lefebvre. “If we want to move it elsewhere, if we look at somewhere in Europe, we need to make some significant changes.”

142.
143.
144.
145.
Though the “Love” theater will be renovated, the 1,300-seat Mirage Theater will stay. Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, one of the most enjoyed attractions on the Strip for years, has been closed since November 2022.

146.
147.
148.
149.
When The Mirage was built, it was the world’s most expensive resort, costing $630 million. It was also the first “megaresort” on the Strip, beginning the wave of construction that has made the gambling corridor what it is today. With The Mirage becoming Hard Rock and the Tropicana being razed to make room for a baseball stadium, the Las Vegas Strip will look quite different in a few years.

150.
The post The Mirage to Close July 17 to Make Way for Hard Rock Las Vegas appeared first on Poker News Daily.

170.
Every day is a fine day for an overlay. Unless, I suppose, you run a poker room and the overlay is massive. Over the weekend, Doug Polk, Andrew Neeme, and Brad Owen had to swallow $417,000 in overlay for the $2 million guaranteed Lodge Championship Series Main Event at their Lodge Poker Club in Austin, Texas. It was the second year in a row that the $3,000 buy-in tournament had a six-figure overlay – it was $334,100 last year.

171.
172.
173.
174.
In a tweet, Polk cited “scheduling errors” and “some logistical nightmares” for the underperformance of the event, but offered his congratulations to all the players, nonetheless.

175.
176.
177.
178.

179.

Ended up overlaying 417k in our main event. Congrats to all the players getting the free value.

We made some scheduling errors and dealt with some logistical nightmares.

Tough week, but as always, we learn and get stronger. We will continue pushing Texas poker forward.
— Doug Polk (@DougPolkVids) May 12, 2024

180.

181.
182.
183.
184.
The Lodge Championship Series Main Event had seven Day 1 flights: one on Wednesday, May 8 and then two each day from May 9 through May 11. Days 2 and 3 were on Sunday and Monday, respectively, while the final table, won by Mike Liang ($428,000) was on Tuesday.

185.
186.
187.
188.
The likely scheduling error that Polk referenced was that Sunday was Mother’s Day. It is quite possible that people simply didn’t want to spend their weekend playing poker when they would prefer to spend it with their mothers, grandmothers, and families.

189.
190.
191.
192.
One person who replied to Polk’s tweet said that perhaps the “appetite” for four-figure buy-ins just isn’t there in Austin, but Polk believes it is.

193.
194.
195.
196.
“If Choctaw can run one of these in the middle of nowhere, we should be able to as well in Austin,” he said.

197.
198.
199.
200.
In that same discussion, another person opined that having the tournament start the same week that the similarly-priced WPT Choctaw Main Event ended may have also been a problem. While the two poker venues are separated by about a five-hour drive, they probably draw from overlapping player pools.

201.
202.
203.
204.
Despite the formidable overlay, Polk, Neeme, and Owen did not hesitate to pay out. A guarantee is a guarantee, after all. The tournament would have needed 734 entries to avoid an overlay – it got just over 500.

205.
206.
207.
208.
The club’s owners also refused to add starting flights to the schedule. There have been instances in the poker industry in which a casino or poker room saw well in advance that a tournament was not going to his the guarantee, so they add more flights in the hopes that more people will register. It’s a dishonest practice that has rightfully drawn criticism from players. Players are promised a certain structure, schedule, and prize distribution and plan their poker budget and time accordingly. Changing any of that at the last second to cover one’s rear end is not good.

209.
210.
211.
212.
Fortunately, the Lodge lived up to its end of the bargain.

240.
After years of trying, Lex Veldhuis finally came through. On Monday, the Team PokerStars Pro and prolific streamer won his very first Championship of Online Poker on Stars, taking the crown in the $5,200 No-Limit Hold’em Titans event in the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP).

241.
242.
243.
244.
The high stakes tournament attracted the world’s best online poker players and Veldhuis readily admitted on social media beforehand that he “might be the worst player at the table.” He also said that it relaxed him a bit, as even though he was at yet another COOP final table that he so desperately wanted to win, he didn’t expect to win it.

245.
246.
247.
248.
He began the final table in the middle of the pack, but went into heads-up play against Ignacio “Nacho124441” Morón with around a 3-to-1 chip lead. Veldhuis got it in good on the final hand, but it was close, as Nacho had A-T.

249.
250.
251.
252.
Live streaming the action as he usually does, Veldhuis didn’t make a sound as the virtual dealer dealt the flop: Q-4-4. Safe for now, but Nacho had two overcards and a runner-runner possibility. The 8 on the turn removed the runner-runner chances, but added another card (along with the Queen) that, if paired, would counterfeit Veldhuis’s Threes and give the hand to Nacho, who would have better kickers.

253.
254.
255.
256.
So Veldhuis had to fade a bunch of cards: Aces, Queens, Tens, and Eights. And that’s just what he did. A Nine fell on the river and with that, Veldhuis let out a gigantic, “YESSSSSSSS!” as he finally had that elusive COOP title, not to mention over $140,000.

263.
264.
265.
266.
Winning his first COOP in this tournament, specifically, was also meaningful to Lex Veldhuis. Speaking with the PokerStars blog, he said:

267.
268.
269.
270.

271.
It’s almost a triple win. I remember when I got second in a COOP last year — a really small one, an $11 6+ event. I was gutted. I was like, wow. It was only then that I really understood what having a COOP title meant to me, even a small one. They really all count.

272.
273.
274.
275.
So, I would have been super happy to win an $11 SCOOP. But I also got a big prize AND it was against the best competition in the world. I really maxxed out.

276.

277.
278.
279.
280.
Veldhuis actually hopped back into SCOOP events and kept right on playing and streaming shortly after his win. He said that opponents at his tables congratulated him, which amazed him, as he realized that all sorts of people were watching, even those who were currently playing in SCOOP tourneys.

281.
282.
283.
284.
For a guy who has had a lot of success both playing poker and streaming his play, it seems strange that it took him this long to get a PokerStars COOP win, but he has one now and it is certainly a day he will not forget.

307.
Chris Moneymaker helped launch the poker boom in 2003 when he won the World Series of Poker Main Event, but even though he is a Poker Hall of Famer and one of the greatest ambassadors the game has ever had, he has not won anything of note since. On Monday, though, he hoisted the trophy of the $25,000 GGMillion$ Live event at the Triton Super High Roller Series in Montenegro for $903,000, one of the biggest cashes of his career.

308.
309.
310.
311.
His total live tournament earnings are now over $7.1 million, mostly from three tournaments: this Triton victory, the WSOP Main Event ($2 million), and a fifth place finish in the 2023 $250,000 Luxon Invitational at the Triton Super High Roller Series London ($2.03 million).

312.
313.
314.
315.
Moneymaker almost didn’t make it to the final table, getting it all-in on the bubble with a short stack, but he nailed an Ace on the river to keep going. To him, it was a sign that he was going to go all the way.

316.
317.
318.
319.
“I hit a three-outer, a six outer. I thought to myself, ‘You know what, this is going to be 2003. I’m not going to lose any more hands today,’” he said in the post-game interview.

320.
321.
322.
323.
“I wasn’t going to lose today,” Moneymaker added. “I could have put it in with any hand and I would have won. I ran pure.”

324.
325.
326.
327.
Despite sitting on a short stack for quite a while, Moneymaker made a huge run and entered the nine-handed final table as a comfortable chip leader, however much one can be comfortable in a high roller tournament filled with great players. He had 11.300 million chips, while his closest competitor, Biao Ding, had 6.125 million.

328.
329.
330.
331.
When it finally got down to heads-up, Moneymaker had a 10 million-chip lead on Brian Kim, 25.700 million to 15.050 million. It only took three hands for Moneymaker to seal the deal.

332.
333.
334.
335.
On the third hand, Moneymaker raised with A-T suited and Kim moved all-in with A-8. Moneymaker made the call and a Ten on the flop essentially clinched it for him. Kim couldn’t find anything to help him on the turn and river and that was it. Chris Moneymaker is the second WSOP Main Event champ after Espen Jorstad to win a Triton Super High Roller title.

400.
888 Holdings will soon change its name to evoke plc after shareholders nearly unanimously approved the rebranding. At the company’s Annual General Meeting on Monday, 99.79% of the total votes cast were in favor of the new name. Of the 18 resolutions, just three had a higher “for” percentage than the rename, and they were all effectively routine administrative votes that most shareholders would just automatically vote for and they only eclipsed the evoke vote by 0.01%.

401.
402.
403.
404.
888 originally made the announcement of the potential name change in late March in its 2023 earnings report. It explained the goal was “….to better reflect the strength of the Group’s multi-brand operating model and its vision and mission to make life more interesting by delighting players with world-class betting and gaming experiences.”

405.
406.
407.
408.
Sure, I guess? Though not the online poker superpower it once was, 888 is still one of the most recognizable brands in the internet gambling industry. Newer brands like FanDuel and DraftKings are much bigger in the US, where 888 really doesn’t have any foothold in terms of name recognition, but that isn’t the fault of the name. “evoke” evokes a shrug, it just sounds like a corporate boardroom brainstorm.

409.
410.
411.
412.
888, beyond the use of the number 8, which is considered a lucky number in Chinese and other Asian cultures, at least stands out from the crowd. It’s interesting. Even if you don’t know that it’s a gaming company, you have a feeling there is something to it. When you I “evoke,” and it’s all-lowercase spelling, my eyes glaze over.

413.
414.
415.
416.
It appears that the new name is effective immediately, judging by a tweet from evoke plc on Monday:

417.
418.
419.
420.

421.

Welcome to evoke!

We're delighted to officially launch today following our rebrand from 888 Holdings plc. Our new corporate entity brings our multi-brand group together with united strategy, mission and vision. 422.

423.
424.
425.
426.
While I am clearly not a fan of the name change, perhaps the company felt it was necessary because of all the brand movement in the industry over the last couple decades. The company isn’t just 888 and its associated sites anymore. It owns William Hill, Mr. Green, and of course 888poker, 888casino, and 888 sport. Renaming the company could help avoid brand confusion. And hey, if it wants to sell the 888 sites one day (I’m not saying this will happen, just brainstorming), it can do it much more cleanly than it could if the entire company was still name 888 Holdings.

427.
428.
429.
430.
The company’s stock still trades under the “888” ticker on the London Stock Exchange, but will soon switch over to “EVOK.”

454.

455.
It has become almost as agonizing to watch the state of New York dance with online poker as it is watching California. For years both states have dallied with the notion of passing online poker legislation, only to turn away from the industry that potentially could net them billions in tax revenues. Could that be changing in the state of New York, however? And could it happen in 2024?

456.
457.
458.
459.
All About the Benjamins

460.
461.
462.
463.
In the Empire State, the major drivers for online poker regulation have been New York State Senator Joe Addabbo and Assemblyman Gary Pretlow. In the 2023 legislative calendar, Addabbo presented online poker regulations that would have taxed the industry at a 30% rate. The reason for this exorbitant price is simply the revenues; Addabbo believes that the tax rate would allow the state to clear $2 billion in revenues per year.

464.
465.
466.
467.
Needless to say, those legislative efforts in 2023 did not go anywhere. But Addabbo and Pretlow have retooled their proposals in an effort at making online poker more palatable to their fellow legislators. Instead of the 30% taxation rate (online sportsbooks in New York are taxed at an unbelievable 51%), their new proposals – SB9226 in the New York Senate and AB1380 in the General Assembly – would have a taxation rate of 15%. Additionally, the number of potential licenses would be upped to ten licenses for operators, which would make up for the lower tax rate.

468.
469.
470.
471.
There is one major reason that Addabbo and Pretlow think this may be the year for online poker to go through in New York. Currently, the budget deficit for the state sits at roughly $9 billion. It is expected to go up to $13 billion in 2024 and, with other areas of New Yorkers’ lives taxed heavily already, there is a need to create new revenue streams for the state. Hence, the two legislators that have pushed for the passage of online gaming believe online poker (and ONLY online poker – there is no discussion of online casinos) is ready to be approved.

472.
473.
474.
475.
Battle Lines Have Been Drawn

476.
477.
478.
479.
While both Addabbo and Pretlow head the committees that would approve online poker, that does not necessarily mean they would be rubber-stamped. Both bills sit in their respective committees – Addabbo’s Senate Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee, and Pretlow’s Standing Committee on Racing and Wagering – and neither of the proposed bills are even scheduled for a hearing currently. That is important because of another issue – time.

480.
481.
482.
483.
The legislative session in Albany ends on June 6. Any proposed legislation would have to have been passed out of the New York General Assembly before that date (25 days away). Then there would be another hurdle to overcome – Governor Kathy Hochul.

484.
485.
486.
487.
In January there were thoughts of expansion of the gaming laws in the state, but those were quickly shot down by Hochul when she approved the state’s budget for 2024. That budget included no expansion of any type of gaming in the state, let alone the approval of any new online gaming measures. That means that passage of any new legislation would be pushed off to later in 2024 and the measures from Addabbo and Pretlow.

488.
489.
490.
491.
There is also a great deal of pushback from major players in the industry. New York’s powerful casino workers’ union is against any expansion into the online arena, under the auspices of eroding the live gaming arena with online play. Additionally, the political director of the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, Bhav Tibrewal, has taken a decidedly anti-online gaming stance for his organization.

492.
493.
494.
495.
The entire question will be decided by June 6. If there is no passage of the bills currently available, then it will not be until 2025 that the issue can be broached again. With a statewide population of roughly 19.5 million, the addition of online poker in New York would be a major milestone, but the odds look stacked against it.

525.
After their massive success last year, you knew that they would be back in 2024. PokerStars announced last week that its North American Poker Tour stop in Las Vegas will return in November. The location once again will be Resorts World Las Vegas, which will host several big tournaments during a ten-day run in the desert.

526.
527.
528.
529.
“Last year, the NAPT smashed all expectations, so this year, we’re going even bigger,” Steve Preiss, the Vice President of PokerStars North America, stated during the announcement. “With a premier partner like Resorts World Las Vegas, we’re stepping up our game: bigger tournaments, buy-ins, and player-focused events.”

530.
531.
532.
533.
The director of Poker Operations for Resorts World echoed those sentiments. “Resorts World Las Vegas is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated return of PokerStars and the NAPT this November,” Leon Wheeler said. “After last year’s tremendous success, we are eager to capitalize on that momentum and host an even more spectacular festival in 2024.”

534.
535.
536.
537.
Mark Your Calendars

538.
539.
540.
541.
Resorts World Las Vegas will open its doors to the NAPT from November 1 through November 10, with a $500 “Mystery Bounty” tournament kicking off the action. On the 4th, big money will be on the line as the $25,000 Super High Roller draws the crème of the poker world to the tables. For those who get knocked out of the Super High Roller, the NAPT Main Event will start on November 5, with the $5000 buy-in event sure to bring together both amateurs and pros looking for an end-of-year score.

542.
543.
544.
545.
If players bust from the Main Event, then there are a couple more options for the players to jump into. On November 8, the NAPT High Roller will be held, with the $10,000 buy-in sure to have a strong field and a big prize pool. As the Main Event plays out on November 10, the NAPT Cup (a $500 buy in tournament) will play out alongside it and the High Roller.

546.
547.
548.
549.
Players in North America will have a chance to get in on the action in November. There will be online qualifiers held in states that offer the PokerStars online poker platform. That means that players in New Jersey, Michigan, and Pennsylvania will be able to get in through satellites, alongside those from Ontario who play on the Canadian client and make it a true North American event.

550.
551.
552.
553.
Memorable 2023 Event First in Twelve Years

554.
555.
556.
557.
There were plenty of questions when PokerStars revived the NAPT in 2023. The original NAPT started in 2010 and was cruising along into its second season in 2011…then “Black Friday” struck. It would take a long twelve years before the NAPT would be revived (albeit in a limited format) when poker began its long climb out of the COVID pandemic of 2020.

558.
559.
560.
561.
The 2023 version of the NAPT Las Vegas was admittedly a bit less ambitious to start. The Main Event was only $1500 ($150 juice), and its side events of a High Roller ($500) and a Super High Roller ($10,000) were also scaled back a bit. The six Day Ones of the Main Event helped to build what would become a special event from last year.

562.
563.
564.
565.
Sami Bechahed came to the final table as the massive chip leader, holding 10.57 million chips, but he had several tough customers to overcome. He would knock them all down, however, with David Coleman, Nick Schulman, Sergio Aido, and Ping Liu being just some of the opponents who left before Bechahed did. After a twelve-hour final table, Bechahed was able to defeat Jonathan Borenstein in heads up play to capture the first NAPT title in twelve years and pick up the $268,545 first place prize.

566.
567.
568.
569.
If there were a major critique with the NAPT and PokerStars, it is the fact that they have not yet announced any other tournaments to make it a “tour.” With the rebirth of the NAPT Las Vegas, PokerStars will begin to create its North American counterpart to its European Poker Tour offerings.

595.
We are only weeks away from the start of the 2024 World Series of Poker. The crème of the poker world, degenerate gamblers, and ambitious amateurs are all lining up to take their shots at earning poker’s greatest honor – the gold bracelet signifying a WSOP tournament winner – but what are they doing to prepare for “summer camp” in Las Vegas? Poker professional Faraz Jaka, who is one of those who has taken home a WSOP bracelet, offered some thoughts on the subject in a Facebook post to his followers.

596.
597.
598.
599.
Four-Step Process to Success

600.
601.
602.
603.
“The WSOP kicks off in less than three weeks,” Jaka observed on Saturday, “and if you haven’t planned your trip, here are four last-minute tips to make your stay easier.”

604.
605.
606.
607.
Some may think that Jaka is offering sage advice on when to get to the Horseshoe or Paris Las Vegas, or how to play certain situations at the table, but he really talks about everything AWAY from the table. “First, get your poker player rate,” Jaka says. “Call up hotels with card rooms or DM (direct message) their poker handles…and let them know you are in town to play poker. They will often get you a room at a much cheaper poker player rate.” Jaka also notes that, with this declaration, it might be expected that you play a certain amount on the property.

608.
609.
610.
611.
“Second, book a place with a kitchen,” Jaka declares. “This allows you to meal prep ahead of your tournaments, which can make a big difference in your routine.” It is a move that will allow you to “save time, money, and mental stress,” Jaka believes.

612.
613.
614.
615.
“(With a kitchen), plan your meals ahead of time,” Jaka instructs. “Make it a priority to go grocery shopping the first day you get there and outline a meal plan during the Series.” In offering this tip, Jaka admits, “I notice if I leave it for later, I end up not doing it…fly in a day earlier (if you have to)…having healthy food ready for a week full of tournaments is a huge stress reliever.”

616.
617.
618.
619.
His final tip is one more for your mental state during your stay at the WSOP. “Make time for family and non-player friends,” Jaka offers. “Make sure you plan to accommodate some quality time with them…but make sure you plan your off days well; you do not want your “late night” out to interfere with a big tournament starting the next day!”

620.
621.
622.
623.
Jaka’s Success Speaks for Itself

624.
625.
626.
627.
From following these hard-earned lessons, Jaka has become one of the best players in the world. Throughout his WSOP career, Jaka has accumulated 39 cashes and made six final tables. In 2023, he would earn that precious WSOP bracelet in outlasting a Shootout field to pick up a $237,367 payday.

628.
629.
630.
631.
Outside of the WSOP, Jaka hasn’t exactly lacked for success either. In 2012, he finished third in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, scoring $755,000 for that tournament, and totaling 176 worldwide tournament finishes. In his career, Jaka has racked up over $7.3 million in tournament earnings, currently in the Top 250 in poker history.

632.
633.
634.
635.
Unfortunately, Jaka doesn’t step to the felt much anymore. He has an extensive list of side interests from businesses he has created, putting his business degree from the University of Illinois to effective use. But Jaka is not to be trifled with at the tables; if you find yourself across the felt from Faraz Jaka at the 2024 WSOP, you would be well advised to follow some of his suggestions for success.

676.
With a heavy heart, Poker News Daily reports on the passing of a man whose multi-faceted and iconoclastic approach to life resulted in excellence across many fields. Steve Albini, a two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner and producer of one of the iconic rock albums of the Nineties, stunningly passed away on Wednesday morning at his recording studio, Electrical Audio, in Chicago. Albini passed away from a heart attack at the entirely too-young age of 61.

677.
678.
679.
680.
A Poker Champion

681.
682.
683.
684.
One of the passions in Albini’s life was poker. Arguably, Albini was one of the most unlikely poker champions – more on that in a moment – but he would win poker’s greatest trophy on two occasions. That achievement puts him among the 328 players in the history of the WSOP to have earned two bracelets on its biggest stage.

685.
686.
687.
688.
A noted mixed game specialist, Albini usually kept his play to the Las Vegas stage of the WSOP. In his career, Albini picked up nine official WSOP cashes, not including his final cash at the WSOPC Chicago in October 2023. At the 2018 WSOP, he grasped the brass ring – or gold bracelet, in this case – when Steve took down a $1500 Seven Card Stud event, defeating Esther Rossi, Frankie O’Dell, Chris Ferguson, and Jeff Lisandro on the way to the title.

689.
690.
691.
692.
In 2022, Albini would defeat a 773-player field in the $1500 H.O.R.S.E. event to capture his second bracelet. That win put him into “rare air” in World Series of Poker history, becoming one of only 328 players to ever take down multiple bracelet wins. Because he was not a part of the “big money” No Limit Hold’em action, Albini only earned $370,045 in his tournament poker career, but it was never about the money for Steve…it was more about the challenge of the play.

693.
694.
695.
696.
Not Just a “Degenerate Gambler”

697.
698.
699.
700.
However, Steve Albini created another life outside of taking opponents’ chips and winning WSOP bracelets. He was a noted musician, coming up on the streets of Chicago and playing guitar in the notable band Big Black. Interestingly enough, Albini and the band would end their run together because Albini, who shunned compromising to become a “hit making” band, were becoming too popular.

701.
702.
703.
704.
Instead of just jamming through the Chicago night, Albini decided to take another course and step to the other side of the board. Instead of being a performer, Albini became a record producer – he preferred to call himself an “engineer” – and would go on to work with some of the biggest names in alternative rock. Artists such as PJ Harvey, The Pixies, The Jesus Lizard, and former Led Zeppelin legends Robert Plant and Jimmy Page sat in the studio while Albini twisted the knobs.

705.
706.
707.
708.
By far the most notable contribution from Albini was his work with a groundbreaking band out of the Pacific Northwest. Albini went into the studio with Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic – otherwise known as Nirvana – in 1993 to oversee the engineering of what would be the final studio album from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band. In Utero was the result, with Albini adding to the band by playing guitar on the Nirvana classic “All Apologies.”

709.
710.
711.
712.
In Utero turned out to be the biggest album Albini had a hand in. It would go on to be certified platinum five times, with “All Apologies” giving a softer side to the hard-edged “Heart Shaped Box” on the same record. “All Apologies” would also serve as the coda to the run of Nirvana after the band performed the tune on MTV Unplugged in November 1993; Cobain committed suicide in April 1994 and the MTV episode and album were released a year after its recording.

713.
714.
715.
716.
Poker News Daily offers our condolences to the friends and family of Steve Albini as they deal with his untimely passing.
