20.
Colts’ AD Mitchell has the chance to be an immediate deep threat and push for starting reps opposite Michael Pittman Jr.—even as a rookie.

According to PFF, Indianapolis Colts rookie wideout AD Mitchell is the ‘best player fit’ among all rookie wideouts selected in the 2024 NFL Draft:

  21.

  22.
WIDE RECEIVER: ADONAI MITCHELL, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

  23.
Mitchell’s landing with the Colts at No. 52 could go down as the steal of the draft. Indianapolis already has a true “X” receiver in Michael Pittman Jr. and a reliable slot receiver in Josh Downs. The Colts were missing a vertical threat as the final puzzle piece of their 11 personnel (three wide receivers) sets. They filled it with a 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver who runs a 4.34-second 40-yard dash and jumps out of the gym with much better route running than most players his size.

  24.
Yeah, consider me excited about that.

  25.

  26.
Due to alleged ‘maturity concerns,’ which a heated Colts general manager Chris Ballard later publicly detested in his ‘post-Day 2’ draft press conference, Mitchell slid to the Colts all the way to the 52nd overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

  27.
Mitchell was highly productive with 55 receptions for 845 receiving yards (15.4 ypr. avg.) and 11 touchdown receptions during 14 starts for the Longhorns in 2023—earning 2nd-Team All-Big 12 and conference ‘Newcomer of the Year’ honors this past season.

  28.
At 6’2,” 205 pounds, he has size, speed (4.34 forty time), sure hands, body control, and perhaps most impressively, the special ability to separate at the top of his routes.

  29.
He was an ‘absolute dawg’ at times for UT and already has a big believer in future Hall of Famer Steve Smith, formerly of the Carolina Panthers and later, the Baltimore Ravens.

  30.
Mitchell should provide immediate deep threat ability and push incumbent #2 wideout Alec Pierce for starting reps opposite lead wideout Michael Pittman Jr.—even as a rookie. At the very least, it will be fun in 2024 watching him test the maximum limits of 2nd-year quarterback Anthony Richardson’s rocket arm downfield situationally.

  31.
From that standpoint, it’s defensible why PFF went with Mitchell as their best rookie player fit positionally, even surprisingly over the likes of top wideouts like Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, and Rome Odunze—all of whom went within the recent draft’s Top 10 picks.

  51.
Could Colts 2nd-year cornerback JuJu Brents solidify himself as Indy’s #1 cornerback both now and in the future?

According to PFF, Indianapolis Colts 2nd-year cornerback Julius ‘JuJu’ Brents is the team’s ‘breakout player’ before the 2024 regular season:

  52.

  53.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: CB JUJU BRENTS

  54.
There was considerable thought that Indy would add a corner early in the draft, but general manager Chris Ballard didn’t go that route until the fifth round. As a result, it’s fair to assume that the Colts have lofty goals for Brents in his second season. The former Kansas State Wildcat was up and down throughout his rookie campaign, but he should get more consistent with regular playing time.

  55.

  56.
Originally selected by the Colts in the early 2nd round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Brents was slow to hit the field because of a hamstring injury throughout training camp (and then a personal matter and quad injury) but eventually debuted in Week 3 for Indianapolis.

  57.
Having later reinjured that quad—costing him 7 extra games, Brents would record 43 tackles (30 solo), an interception, 6 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery during 9 games (8 starts) in 2023.

  58.
Per PFF (subscription), Brents was their 66th best graded cornerback last year with a +63.2 overall grade. He was targeted 48 times in coverage for 32 receptions (66.7 reception rate), 453 receiving yards (14.2 ypr. avg.), 3 touchdown receptions, an interception, and an opposing passer rating of 109.1.

  59.
As a rookie cornerback, and with even more limited reps entering the year because of a hamstring, Brents took some initial lumps, but also showed a lot of promise as a potential long-term impact starter—if he can continue to grow and develop.

  60.
The local Indy product really is the Colts’ ideal prototype at modern day cornerback with his size, length, athleticism, and speed, in addition to his hopefully sticky coverage going forward. It’s not hard to see why PFF projects him as a breakout candidate with more experience—as he should be penciled into one of the Colts’ starting outside cornerback roles (and could quite possibly be cemented as Indy’s #1 cornerback by year-end).

  82.
With that now known, if anyone is interested, in addition to the AFC South, the Colts will take on the entire AFC West and NFC West (and a member of the AFC East and AFC North) during the 2025-26 regular season—a year later:

  117.
5 intriguing Colts matchups to look forward to in 2024

  124.
  125.
In 2024, the Indianapolis Colts will pick up where they left off from a season ago, literally and figuratively.

The biggest storyline for the Colts as they head into the 2024 season is that of Anthony Richardson’s health. After recently returning from injury, Richardson and the Colts are confident in their ability, now’s the time to piece it all together before the regular season kicks off.

  126.
As the Colts look to win their first AFC South title in a decade, there are numerous fun storylines to look forward to, even at this point in the summer. Here are five of the most intriguing matchups slated for the 2024 NFL Season:

  127.

  128.

  129.

Rematch of the 2023 AFC South Division Title (Houston at Indianapolis)

  132. Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images
  133.

  134.
This rematch features a complete re-do of Week 18’s contest in 2023, down to the venue. However, both Top 5 2023 Draft selections will be slated to play this time. Houston’s CJ Stroud led them to victory the last time these two teams faced off, but as for when both he and Richardson played, the Colts were victorious. The Colts desperately need to break their infamous Week 1 curse that’s been in effect for 10 years now, and what better way to combat this than a vaunted AFC South matchup.

  135.

  136.
2. Time for Recess (Indianapolis at Green Bay)

  139. Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images
  140.

  141.
In 2023, these two teams boasted two of the league’s youngest rosters. Fast forward to this upcoming season and both teams are running it back more than most realize. Both teams will feature starting QBs who are 25 years old or younger (Jordan Love, Anthony Richardson). The offensive minds of Colts HC Shane Steichen and Packers HC Matt LaFleur are sure to be on full display during this matchup.

  142.

  143.
3. Past Regime Takes on New Era; Expected Franchise QB Duel (Chicago at Indianapolis)

  144.

  146. Photo by Justin Casterline/Getty Images
  147.

  148.
Bears HC and former Colts DC Matt Eberflus will take on his former team in the regular season for the first time as a Head Coach. Aside from this storyline, the obvious duel that’ll be marketed heavily is rookie QB and No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams taking on 2nd year Anthony Richardson. Both quarterbacks are set to become their respective team’s franchise guy and this matchup will be the first of many big-time bouts during their career.

  149.

  150.
4. Battle Between the +1 Quarterbacks (Buffalo at Indianapolis)

  151.

  152.

  154.

  155.
Anthony Richardson versus Josh Allen. Is there much more to say? The NFL is always changing but its most important position, quarterback, has changed the most in recent years. Quarterbacks are more athletic and unpredictable than ever before. Bills QB Josh Allen is to thank for that, and now Anthony Richardson gets his opportunity to show the world that he can go toe-to-toe with the NFL’s best.

  156.

  162.
The Indianapolis Colts’ only primetime game in 2024 comes at an away game against the Jets in Week 11. Jets starting QB and 4-time MVP Aaron Rodgers is set to make his comeback after lasting only four snaps in 2023. Both Rodgers and Richardson had their 2023 season cut short, and although their careers couldn’t be more different, the whole football world will be interested in watching the past face off against the future.

  168.

  169.
At this point, every fan of an AFC South team is aware of the near-impossible feat that Indy faces annually. For whatever reason, EverBank Stadium has become a place that the Colts inevitably struggle at. Regardless of the venue playing its part in said curse, Indy is looking to end that talking point for good as they strive for revenge after being swept by the Jaguars in 2023.

  189.
  190.
Let’s get after it as the Texans headline the opening match for the Colts in 2024.

It is said that revenge is a dish best served cold. The Indianapolis Colts have a chance to serve up some revenge while it is still pipping hot as the Houston Texans come to town as the first opponent in 2024. On fourth and one, with the season on the line and a shot at the playoffs in sight, the image of the pass from Gardner Minshew bouncing off the hands of Tyler Goodson is still seared in the minds of most fans. Texans players celebrating as Goodson lies facedown on the turf still echoes during a long offseason.

  191.
Yes, it has been a long offseason, but in true game action, this one couldn’t have come any faster. Sometimes, rematches make us wait until week sixteen. Sometimes, they don’t come around until the playoffs. Sometimes, they go seasons in between. Not this one. Not this matchup featuring division foes that could be part of a renewed rivalry that shapes not only the AFC South but the entire conference for years to come.

  192.
C.J. Stroud was undoubtedly electric. Any problems people said he would have based on “low test scores” appear to be overblown and downright silly. Of course, time will tell. Robert Griffin III looked like a world-beater too in his first year, but that didn’t last. As of now, however, I have no reason to believe Stroud won’t be the biggest obstacle in front of the Colts year in and year out.

  193.
The Colts have one of their own in Anthony Richardson though. You can’t tell me he won’t have extra juice after missing most of last year. He was a man possessed during his shortened debut against the Texans last year. After two impressive rushing touchdowns, only a concussion could slow him down. What Richardson will be able to accomplish with a year of close observation and study under his belt is anyone’s guess, but I am here for it.

  194.
With seventeen games, all of them are important, but just like last year, week one can carry incredible weight at the end of the season. The Texans will most likely be the team the Colts will have to challenge for the division. Winning against the Texans would not only break the week one drought, but it would also set the Colts up with a potential tie breaker. It is time to defend your home field Colts and create some early separation in the division. Go Colts!

  215.
The Colts reportedly will be carrying on their routine offseason tradition of holding joint training camp practices—this time with the Arizona Cardinals.

According to Fox59/CBS4’s Mike Chappell, the Indianapolis Colts will host joint training camp practices with the Arizona Cardinals ahead of the two teams’ Week 3 preseason finale matchup on Saturday, August 17th (7 PM EST):

  218.
One more issue with these dates settled. Colts once again scrimmaging in training camp. Will hold joint practices with Arizona at Grand Park before Aug. 17 preseason game. Great work for players. Great viewing for fans.
— Mike Chappell (@mchappell51) May 16, 2024

  223.
It sounds like at least some of these practices will be open to the general public, which is great for Colts fans making the trip to Westfield, Indiana.

  224.
The Colts hosted joint training camp practices with the Chicago Bears last year, as well as traveled to the Philadelphia Eagles before Indianapolis’s preseason matchup with each of them respectively.

  225.
The Colts have a long history of holding joint training camp practices including with the Detroit Lions, Carolina Panthers, and Cleveland Browns dating further back through the years. Some of those aforementioned teams like the Lions and Bears even multiple times.

  226.
Former Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon makes his return to Indianapolis as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. However, most of the Horseshoe faithful will be more interested in seeing the 4th overall pick of this year’s NFL Draft, Marvin Harrison Jr., who is of course the son of the legendary Colts Super Bowl champion wideout and Hall of Famer, his namesake, who spent his entire illustrious 13-year career all with Indianapolis.

  258.
Week 1 (August 11th): Denver Broncos, 1 PM EST

  259.
This one is interesting because the Colts actually travel to take on the Denver Broncos during Week 15 (December 15th) of this year’s regular season. Still, it’s a fair question of whether starters will even play, and what Indianapolis shows the Broncos should be rather vanilla regardless—given the later regular season matchup. Perhaps the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft, Bo Nix, could see some early preseason QB reps for Denver though.

  265.
Week 2 (August 17th): Arizona Cardinals, 7 PM EST

  266.
Former Indianapolis Colts defensive backs coach Jonathan Gannon makes his return to the Circle City for an exhibition game, but all eyes will be on the son of legendary Horseshoe wideout Marvin Harrison Sr.—if he even plays in this one. Marvin Harrison Jr. was taken with the 4th overall pick in this year’s draft and is one of the best wideout prospects to come out in recent memory—drawing some rave comparisons with his speed, hands, explosiveness, and route-running to his Hall of Fame father.

  271.

  272.
Week 3 (August 22nd): At Cincinnati Bengals, 8 PM EST

  273.
The preseason finale is with a routine exhibition foe, the nearby Cincinnati Bengals. The Colts may still have a gritty taste in their mouths from the last time they were in the home of Skyline Chili, when they lost 34-14 in blowout fashion during Week 14 of last year. Running back Zack Moss may be in uniform again, only this time for the Bengals—as he departed Indy in free agency. Preseason isn’t the best time to seek revenge though, and the Colts would ultimately rather leave healthy here than winners.

  294.
The Colts aim to snap a three-year playoff drought and win the first AFC South title since 2014.

As the NFL unveiled its 2024 schedule Wednesday on NFL Network, the path to the playoffs is officially set and chock full of unfinished business with unlimited season-opener grudge matches.

  295.
The Indianapolis Colts begin the 2024 regular season preparing for the same divisional rival who eliminated them from postseason contention in last season’s finale. The AFC South foes will meet back in Indianapolis as the Colts host the Houston Texans at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. Two of the first four overall picks in the 2023 NFL Draft will duel for the second time in their careers. It’s been 11 years since the Colts emerged victorious in the season opener and second-year head coach Shane Steichen will certainly be fired up to spin the block and avenge his last loss.

  296.
As the AFC South is set to challenge the AFC East and NFC North in 2024, the Colts travel to Lambeau Field for the first time since 2016 to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. Indianapolis welcomes Chicago’s first overall draft pick Caleb Williams, whose first three career games will be against AFC South opponents, to induce a new chapter to the Colts-Bears rivalry in Week 3.

  297.
The Colts are scheduled to host the Pittsburgh Steelers for the third consecutive season in Week 4. On the road in Week 5, the Colts have intentions to end a decade-long curse, which includes nine consecutive losses to the Jaguars in Jacksonville. Indianapolis follows up in Week 6 back at home to host the rebuilding Tennessee Titans, who were swept by the Colts and finished last in the AFC South in 2023. In Week 7, the 2023 NFL passing yards leader Tua Tagovailoa and five-time First-Team All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill will lead one of the most explosive offensive units as the Miami Dolphins visit Indianapolis for the first time in five seasons.

  298.
Indianapolis faces consecutive road games in Weeks 8-9, including a rematch with the Texans, then against the Minnesota Vikings. The back nine weeks of the schedule switches to the AFC East as the Colts return home to play the Buffalo Bills in Week 10. The Colts have only one primetime game scheduled in 2024, a Week 11 Sunday Night Football matchup against the New York Jets at Metlife Stadium on Nov. 17. The Jets, 49ers and Cowboys received the most primetime games with six each. If both gunslingers remain healthy, Colts second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson will duel four-time MVP QB Aaron Rodgers in his first primetime NFL game.

  306.
The Colts follow up the stand-alone contest by hosting the 2023 NFC finalist Detroit Lions in Week 12, then head to Foxborough to meet the New England Patriots in Week 13. Indianapolis is one of six teams without a BYE until Week 14, which is the final BYE week for any NFL team. The easiest portion of the Colts schedule comes after the BYE week as the stampede heads west to battle the Denver Broncos in Week 15. The Colts play the Titans at home in Week 16, then visit Metlife for the second time in the final road game of the regular season against the Giants in Week 17. Indianapolis closes the regular season with a divisional home game against the Jaguars.

  307.
Richardson will make his return to the gridiron after season-ending shoulder surgery ended his rookie campaign. Four of the five non-divisional opponents the Colts will host in 2024 made the playoffs last season. The Colts aim to snap a three-year playoff drought and claim the first AFC South title since 2014.
