12.
Raiders Draft 2024: Trey Taylor may outplay his draft status

  20.
Unsettled depth at safety and special teams gives seventh-round pick opportunity to seize role

The Las Vegas Raiders added one Jim Thorpe Award winner — given to the best defensive back in college football — with the 43rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by selecting Tre’von Moehrig. The Silver & Black added yet another by snaring Trey Taylor with the 223rd overall pick in this year’s rendition of the draft.

  21.
Like his higher drafted fellow Thorpe winner, Taylor was left college as a productive safety that created takeaways in coverage and was a disruptive as a run defender at Air Force. The 6-foot, 210-pound Texas native was the first Falcon to win the Jim Thorpe honor and arrives to Las Vegas with a reputation as an instinctive, strong, and determined defensive back.

  22.
While Moehrig has developed into a starter at safety alongside veteran Marcus Epps, the depth behind the two starters is a bit unsettled. As are the special teams units, which gives Taylor a great opportunity to showcase his talents and potentially outplay his seventh-round draft status.

  25.
With the 223rd pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the #Raiders select, S Trey Taylor. @trey_taylor007 joins the Silver and Black as the 10th player in NFL history drafted out of @AF_Football - the first since 2022 (Jordan Jackson, New Orleans). pic.twitter.com/bZTOsUOySD
— Raiders PR (@RAIDERS_PR) April 27, 2024

  28.
  29.

  30.
Closing out his collegiate stint at Air Force with 74 total tackles, three interceptions (one a 30-yard pick six), and four passes defensed, Taylor finished with 205 total tackles (120 solo), 11 stops for loss, 2.5 sacks, six interceptions, 13 pass deflections, and one forced fumble. That kind of production is what the Raiders secondary needs more of and that’ll get Taylor some looks on defense.

  31.
But where Taylor is likeliest to cut his teeth early on in his pro career is special teams.

  32.
He was a mainstay on punt coverages his last three seasons at Air Force and Las Vegas needs more youth and quality talent for special teams coordinator Tom McMahon’s coverage units. With his size, strength, and length, Taylor has the ideal size to become a core special teamer who can mix in as a defender as he develops his pro game.

  33.
The urgency Taylor displays when attacking the line of scrimmage as a run defender as well as his ability to get around or through blocks will serve him well in the NFL if he can transition that from Air Force to the Raiders. That kind of downhill attack and “no one gets in my way” mentality is what makes coverage units impact ones and that’s an innate trait that Taylor brings to the table. He’s physical and willing to deliver hits and the pop he has on his tackles is both audible and visually striking.

  34.

  35.

  36.
I’ll take Air Force safety Trey Taylor on Day 3, thank you

pic.twitter.com/rtiejmCiBt
— Steve Palazzolo (@PFF_Steve) April 18, 2024
  37.

  38.
  39.
  40.

  41.
Yet, why was a productive safety and Jim Thorpe Award recipient even available until the 223rd pick in the final stanza of the draft?

  42.
While Taylor does display high football instincts and ball skills, his deep and long speed is in question. He’s quick to react and get to a play due to instincts but Taylor ran a 4.59-second 40-yard dash at the Air Force pro day, which likely gave the other 31 NFL teams pause on selecting him before the Raiders plucked him from the pool of prospects. Even with the instincts and impressive intelligence, character, and leadership (both off and on the field), the speed to keep up and accelerate with pro-caliber athletes can scare away many teams.

  43.

But for the Raiders, Taylor was ripe for the picking with the first of their two seventh-round selections.

  44.

“You can see why he was successful in college,” Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said of Taylor during his rookie minicamp press conference. “I think he has a great opportunity to help us, especially in the kicking game. But when you look at him physically, I mean he’s a specimen. I mean he’s a good-looking prospect. It’s good to get him in the building, glad to have him here. Great smile, good personality, a really good fit for us.”

  45.
Taylor put up an impressive 22 reps on the 225-pound bench press at Air Force’s pro day and Las Vegas is banking on coaching from safeties coach Gerald Alexander, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, and assistant head coach Marvin Lewis shoring up deficiencies in the safety’s game. Taylor can both overshoot and undershoot his pursuit angles and has a tendency to arm tackle instead of finish properly. Both of which can be detrimental as both defender and special teamer.

  46.
Taylor does join a crowded safety room that has Moehrig and Epps the likely starting duo. Isaiah Pola-Mao is a taller safety at 6-foot-4 and enters his third year while Chris Smith II, a 2023 fifth-round pick, enters his second season. Like Taylor, Smith was a productive Georgia safety who produced takeaways but ran a slow 40 at 4.62. Undrafted free agents Jaydon Grant and Phalen Sanford round out the safeties in Las Vegas.

  47.
Thus, Taylor has a lot of proving to do to earn a roster or practice squad spot. The surest way to earn a gig though is by proving special teams value.

  48.
Of Note: Like fellow Raiders safety Isaiah Pola-Mao, Taylor is related to royal NFL safeties. Pola-Mao’s uncle is hall of fame safety Troy Polamalu while Taylor’s cousin (by marriage) is hall of fame safety Ed Reed. So it was no surprise to see the Baltimore Ravens use one of their top 30 visits on Taylor.

  68.
Returning Raider Nation’s questions for the week

The NFL schedule is out and OTAs are just around the corner for the Las Vegas Raiders. We also have a few hypothetical questions for this week’s mailbag but before we get into that, I just wanted to say thank you all for your kind messages about my grandfather. Whether it was in the comments section here or replies to my post on X/Twitter, I really appreciate the support and that speaks to the community that is Raider Nation! That meant a lot to me.

  69.
Anyway, let’s get to it.

  70.

  71.
AAAA54

  72.

Do you think the Raiders would have drafted Bo Nix at 13 if he was still on the board? Thanks!

  73.

  74.
Answer: I honestly don’t think so. I get the feeling they didn’t value the quarterbacks that much and the team’s brass has been vocal that Brock Bowers was their guy. Maybe that’s just to hype up their pick and help inspire confidence in Bowers, but his tape is enough to justify wanting him over someone like Bo Nix. Now if Bowers wasn’t available because the Broncos took him, maybe Nix is the pick but it sounds like Terrion Arnold was also high on their board.

  75.

  76.
asa1658

  77.

Hey Matt...what do you think TT does if both Penix and Bowers are both there at 13?

  78.

  79.
A: I do get more pause about Michael Penix Jr. because the league was higher on him than Nix and so was I. Also, ESPN’s Matt Miller said Las Vegas really likes the Washington quarterback ahead of the draft whereas those rumors weren’t as prominent with Nix. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if they would have taken Penix had he fallen to 13.

  80.

  81.
DarylHarmonica

  82.

How do you rate our assistant/position coaches compared to last year? Can our OC utilize the players we have or does he try to fit round pegs in square holes? I know it's two questions but humor me.

  83.

  84.
A: The Raiders got more experienced coaches on the offensive line and at quarterback. Both Bo Hardegree and Camren Bricillo were still relatively inexperienced in their roles in the NFL, while James Cregg and Rich Scangarello have been around much longer.

  85.
Cregg’s claim to fame is coaching the best offensive line in college football on LSU’s National Championship team, to go along with almost a decade of NFL experience. Scangarello is a harder sell as he hasn’t had much success outside of getting a few quality years out of Jimmy Grappolo in San Francisco.

  86.

Las Vegas went in the other direction with its running back coaching, swapping out Kennedy Polumalu for Carnell “Cadillac” Williams. You probably remember Cadillac from his playing days at Auburn and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so he has some NFL experience but none as a coach. He had been coaching at Auburn since 2019, serving as the interim head coach in 2022 and assistant head coach in 2023, before resigning at the end of the year.

  87.
The defense has two main additions, Gerald Alexander (safeties) and Ricky Manning Jr. (cornerbacks). Both are like Williams, former players who don’t have a ton of experience at their current positions.

  88.
Overall, I like what Antonio Pierce has done as far as building a staff that’s filled with former players, similar to what Dan Campbell has done in Detroit. But that has come at the sacrifice of experience. Hopefully, having guys like Marvin Lews, Joe Philbin and Rob Ryan will balance that out.

  89.
As far as Luke Getsy goes, it took him a while to start developing the running game around Justin Fields, but Getsy eventually got there and Fields did have a ton of rushing yards over the last two years. So, he’s shown some ability to adapt in the past, it just took longer than one would hope. He’s is also still pretty new to being an offensive coordinator, so it’s hard to say definitively.

  90.

  91.
TheGhostOfJanikowski

  92.

Was the Bears' offensive struggles more on Getsy or Fields?

  93.

  94.
A: Both Gety and Fields are culpable but I’d point the finger more toward the quarterback. Fields missed a lot of open reads and ran into a bunch of sacks that really held the Bears’ offense back. There’s a reason why he’s expected to be the backup in Pittsburgh and Chicago didn’t give much in return for him, which should give Raiders fans more optimism about Getsy. Again, he’s still on the hook for some of the offense’s struggles, but Fields did leave plenty of opportunities out there.

  95.

  96.
MtShastaRaiders

  97.

  98.
Wisdom and Football knowledge passed onto you: RIP.

  99.

  100.
What’s the plan if Getsy sucks and the squad starts out 0-4 or something godawful like that — because he is the problem?

  101.

  102.

  103.
A: Thank you!

  104.
Man, you guys are making me into a Luke Getsy defender today, lol! I think Getsy will probably get a full season, but the Raiders could turn to Scott Turner if Antonio Pierce doesn’t like the direction the offense is going. Turner was a holdover from Josh McDaniels’ staff, but only spent one year with McDaniels and was brought in last year for an outside perspective on the offense. He has play-calling/offensive coordinator experience in Washington.

  105.

  107.

When are we going to see some extensions happen? Namely Koonce.

  108.

  109.
A: After June 1 when Garappolo’s contract comes off the books, I would expect to see some extensions start to come in. I would imagine Malcolm Koonce is one of the top priorities, but it could make sense for the Raiders to make him prove it for one more year and for Koonce to hold off on a new deal so he can test the free agent market in the offseason. Not saying that’s what’s going to happen, but that is a potential scenario.

  110.

  112.

  113.
Sorry to hear about your loss, Matt - hope you and your family are as OK as can be at this sad time.

  114.
My question is about how the O line will look come week 1.

  115.
I think the starting five from left to right will be: Miller, Peat, James, JPJ, Munford.

  116.
With Whitehair, Glaze, Parham and Wagner as back-ups I think we have a strong group.

  117.
Do you see us lining up the same way?

  118.

  119.
Thanks

  120.

  121.

  122.
A: Thank you, I appreciate the condolences!

  123.
I would swap out Andrus Peat for Dylan Parham but the rest I completely agree with. Peat wasn’t starting for the Saints last season before Trevor Penning flamed out at left tackle, and Peat was solid but nothing special at that spot. I also think people are writing off Parham a little too quickly for some reason. He hasn’t been great but is solid and enters year three which will be a breaking point. He at least has more potential than Peat does.

  124.

  125.
Dafe2cat

  126.

My condolences for your loss Matt. My questions are about the LG position. With the addition of Peat and Whitehead, it seems to me like the FO is creating some serious competition. Do you see it that way? Plus, how about Glaze, do you see him getting shot at LG?

  127.

  128.
A: Thank you!

  129.
To contradict myself a bit here, Parham’s spot isn’t locked down so he could end up losing it in training camp. However, Cody Whitehair also wasn’t very good last season as he got benched in Chicago. I guess I’m just betting on Parham’s potential and him taking another step toward being a good, but not great starter.

  130.

  132.

Are you as tired as I am about hearing that Minshew was a "Pro Bowler" last year? Dude threw 15 touchdowns. Tyler Huntley made the Pro Bowl because no one else showed up. Kinda like Minshew. Pro Bowler means literally nothing now.

  133.

  134.
A: LOL! I feel like haven’t heard it that much but, like you alluded to, making the Pro Bowl doesn’t mean much at quarterback with how many of them opt out. So, I don’t give people much credit if they use that in an argument. If that happens to you, just hit’em with a “You don’t know ball!”.

  135.

  137.

Condolences Matt for your loss. Looking back at a few years of drafts, I think the Raiders have 4 of their 2021 picks and nothing salvaged from 2020. Leatherwood was the biggest reach and bust, and maybe most of the 2020 class except for Simpson (should have taken Lamb 1st). Were there any other reaches or positive surprises to note?

  138.

  139.
A: Thank you!

  140.
The 2020 class, was full of reaches at just about every pick as Amik Roberston ended up being the best player from that group. Lynn Bowden was a tough one, same with Tanner Muse and Damon Arnette. The 2021 class was a bit of a mixed bag but did produce Tre’von Moehrig, Malcolm Koonce and Nate Hobbs. Those are some quality defensive starters to salvage some value.

  141.

  143.

  144.
I’m very sorry for your loss.

  145.

  146.
Any rationale for the Raiders getting so few prime time games?

  147.

  148.
Thank You

  149.

  150.

  151.
A: They had quite a few last year as the NFL was trying to show off Allegiant Stadium since it was the Super Bowl site. So part of it is balancing out the primetime games, but a big factor is the quarterback situation. The league likes to market big QB matchups since that’s what draws the common fan and Aidan O’Connell or Gardner Minshew aren’t going to move the needle much for most people.

  152.

  154.
Appreciate when you originally got on board. I thank you for your analysis you bring to us Raider fans here. I already asked a question re Getsy but I have a new one regarding your loss. So you could disregard that one of course. What question would your grandfather ask you this week about the team? Respectfully and be well, MSR.

  155.

  156.
A: As you probably can imagine, my grandpa was a fan of old-school football, so he’d want to know about the trenches and how the Raiders are at running the ball. He’d love the style of football Antonio Pierce wants to play and would be a big fan of the defensive line with Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins. He’d definitely be in the Taliese Fuaga over Bowers camp, but I think I could convince him the line will be alright with Jackson Powers-Johnson and Thanyer Munford Jr. moving people in the running game.

  157.

  158.
asa1658

  159.

Matt....your Papa was a fan of which team? You never said. Share?

  160.

  161.
A: He didn’t really have an allegiance to an NFL team. He grew up in Tennessee in the 40s and 50s, well before the Titans were even a thought, and he moved around a lot. He was a Baptist preacher/pastor who would often get called to help new or struggling churches get off the ground. He started his first church when he was 18 years old and continued preaching until his health started declining in his early 80s.

  162.

Back to the football part of my answer, my Papa just liked to watch whatever NFL games were on in general since he didn’t stick around in one city very long and was a big fan of SEC football. He also liked USC because he did spend a good amount of time preaching in the Santa Maria and the San Diego areas.

  163.

  164.
That’ll do it for this week’s mailbag. 184.
NFL will allow Tom Brady to call games while working on ownership deal

Las Vegas Raiders fans are not fond of seven-time champion quarterback Tom Brady. One of the most controversial plays in NFL history sparked his career against the Raiders in the 2001 divisional round.

  185.
Mark Davis didn’t take the tuck rule personally and befriended Brady when he moved the team to Las Vegas. This led to Brady and Davis agreeing to add him as a minority owner with the Raiders in 2023.

  186.
There have been issues making it official, and one of the holdups is Brady working for Fox Sports. He is becoming the leading commentator for Fox NFL Sundays this fall, making owners weary of his bias in the booth. Going into the season, Brady is clear of any issues while working out the deal.

  187.
“Right now, Tom’s not an owner of the Raiders, and as we go into this year, Tom’s able to call any game on the schedule,” NFL executive vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder said via NBC Sports.

  188.
Brady might be unable to call Raiders games if the deal falls through. However, when the deal is finalized, he will still be able to call NFL games and show fans his expertise in football.

  218.
  219.
Storylines to watch now that the schedule is out

While we’re still several months out from the start of the regular season, this week brought Las Vegas Raiders fans and the football world some excitement as the NFL released the 2024 schedule! We officially know when and where the Raiders will play this fall, creating some intriguing games to keep tabs on.

  220.
Below is a look at the five matchups with the best storylines for Las Vegas, listed in order of when they’ll occur.

  221.
Week 1 @ Chargers

  222.
There’s always a ton of storylines and excitement surrounding the season opener because we’ve waited so long to watch some pro football games that actually count, and the hype only intensifies when it’s a matchup between division rivals.

  223.
In addition to all of that, Week 1 between the Los Angeles Chargers and Raiders kicks off new eras for both teams. While Antonio Pierce finished last season as Las Vegas’ interim head coach, Sept. 8 will be his first game with the full-time gig. Meanwhile, Jim Harbaugh will make his return to the NFL and debut as Los Angeles’ head coach, nearly 25 years after he suited up for the Chargers.

  224.

Also, Harbaugh has ties to the Silver and Black, serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach in 2002 and 2003 which was also his first coaching job in the league.

  225.
Week 6 vs Steelers

  226.
Especially since they don’t play each other every year, any time the Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers face off it’s a big deal. It’s a ‘throw out the records’ type of matchup as these two teams always seem to play tight games and the Silver and Black have a slight advantage in the head-to-head series, 17-15.

  227.

  228.
  229. Photo by Arthur Anderson/Getty Images
  230.
John Matuszak vs Steelers, 1976

  231.

  232.
One way or another, Pittsburgh will be breaking in a new quarterback this fall; Russell Wilson or Justin Fields. Las Vegas was also looking for a signal caller this offseason and was loosely connected to those two. So, we’ll find out if the organization’s front office was justified in steering clear of Wilson and Fields. Additionally, the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy goes up against his quarterback from the last two years.

  233.
Week 9 @ Bengals

  234.
Another AFC North foe. The Cincinnati Bengals have widely been considered one of the conference’s top teams over the last few years and that will continue in 2024 as long as quarterback Joe Burrow stays healthy. So, this matchup will be a good measuring stick for where Las Vegas stands among the AFC’s best, especially at the midway point of the campaign.

  235.
Also, this game comes a week after a big home contest against the Kansas City Chiefs and right before the bye week, meaning it will be a good test for the Raiders’ resolve.

  236.
Week 13 @ Chiefs

  237.
Speaking of the Chiefs, one of Las Vegas’ two standalone games this season comes on Black Friday in Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes and company will definitely be looking for some retribution after dropping the home matchup to the Raiders on Christmas Day last year.

  241.
Jack Jones vs. Chiefs, 2023

  242.

  243.
Between the entire country watching a day after stuffing themselves on Thanksgiving and squaring off against one of the franchise’s biggest and oldest rivals, this will certainly be a big contest in the second half of the season for the Silver and Black.

  244.
Week 17 @ Saints

  245.
While it’s difficult to rank the majority of these games against each other when it comes to the biggest storylines, there’s a pretty clear choice of which one would sit atop the list. After leading the Raiders for nearly a decade, Derek Carr faces his former team for the first time in his career.

  246.
It’s not often that a franchise’s all-time passing leader plays against the club he set those records with, but that’s the situation Carr is in with the New Orleans Saints toward the end of the season.

  247.

While the late Ken Stabler — who proceeded Carr as the Raiders’ passing leader — finished his career with two other teams, including the Saints, Stabler never faced off against the Silver and Black. So, a situation like this hasn’t really occurred during the organization’s history.

  248.
Carr will be going against a lot of his old teammates, including his good friend and fellow Fresno State Bulldog, Davante Adams, in what projects to be a pivotal matchup toward the end of the season.

  266.

  267.
  268.
Going game-by-game through the schedule

While we’ve known who the Las Vegas Raiders will play this season for a while, when they play each team is just as important. So, now that the NFL has released the 2024 schedule, let’s dive into it game-by-game and make some way-too-early predictions for how the season will unfold and the Raiders’ record.

  269.
Week 1 @ Chargers

  270.
Our friends at DraftKings Sportsbook have Las Vegas as early underdogs in the season opener, which is a little interesting to me. While the Los Angeles Chargers have a good quarterback in Justin Herbert, they also lost a lot of offensive weapons in Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler, and will be ushering in a new regime this fall.

  271.
Jim Harbaugh has a great track record of success as a head coach, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get off to a bumpy start in Los Angeles given what the team lost this offseason.

  272.
Prediction: Raiders win (1-0)

  273.
Week 2 @ Ravens

  274.
Back-to-back road games against the Harbaugh brothers to begin the season isn’t an ideal situation, especially seeing as the Baltimore Ravens will have extra time to prepare after playing the Kansas City Chiefs on the Thursday night NFL season opener. Also, the Ravens are projected to be one of the favorites to win the AFC this year with reining MVP Lamar Jackson under center.

  275.
Prediction: Raiders lose (1-1)

  276.
Week 3 vs. Panthers

  277.
The Raiders’ home opener should be a favorable matchup. While the Carolina Panthers are hoping second-year quarterback Bryce Young takes a step forward after a tough rookie season, it’s reasonable to expect Young to struggle at the beginning of the campaign. Carolina has done a good job of building the supporting cast around him this offseason, but it might take a few weeks for him to build chemistry with his new teammates.

  278.
Prediction: Raiders win (2-1)

  279.
Week 4 vs. Browns

  280.

  281.
  282. Photo by Jason Miller/Getty Images
  283.
Myles Garrett, Kolton Miller

  284.

  285.
The Cleveland Browns have an elite defensive led by defending Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. That should lead to a fun one-on-one battle between Garrett and Kolton Miller. Cleveland’s biggest question mark is behind center as Deshaun Watson hasn’t lived up to the billing during his two seasons with the Browns. Still, the team’s supporting cast is strong with running back Nick Chubb, former Raider receiver Amari Cooper and newly acquired wideout Jerry Jeudy.

  286.
Prediction: Raiders lose (2-2)

  287.
Week 5 at Broncos

  288.
Las Vegas has never lost to the Denver Broncos and it is hard to imagine that will change this season as the Broncos will likely be breaking in rookie quarterback Bo Nix during the early stages of the campaign. Denver finished in third place in the AFC West last season and should be projected to stay toward the bottom of the division in 2024.

  289.

Prediction: Raiders win (3-2)

  290.
Week 6 vs Steelers

  291.
Who will the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback be, Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? Either way, the Raiders should be able to avenge last year’s home loss to the Steelers and take down one of the organization’s oldest rivals.

  292.
Prediction: Raiders win (4-2)

  293.
Week 7 at Rams

  294.
Last season, the Los Angeles Rams surprised a lot of people by making the playoffs after going 5-12 the year before. Quarterback Matthew Stafford staying healthy was a big reason for that and Sean McVay has become one of the best head coaches in the NFL.

  295.
While the Rams lost future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald to retirement this offseason, they have a strong and young defensive line to replace Donald. Kobie Turner was a Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist last season and the front office loaded up on Florida State pass-rushers with Jared Verse and Braden Fiske.

  296.
Prediction: Raiders lose (4-3)

  297.
Week 8 vs Chiefs

  298.
Taking down the defending back-to-back champions will obviously be one of the Silver and Black’s biggest goals this season, especially since the Kansas City Chiefs are hated rivals. However, it’d be foolish to bet against the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes at this juncture as they’ve been one of the NFL’s best teams for a few years now.

  299.
Prediction: Raiders lose (4-4)

  300.
Week 9 at Bengals

  301.
Las Vegas secondary has garnered a lot of attention this offseason as they are very young at cornerback. The team doesn’t have two clear-cut starters at the position right now, and the Cincinnati Bengals could arguably be the defensive backfield’s biggest test with stud receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins along with quarterback Joe Burrow. Granted, Higgins has asked for a trade and Burrow’s health is always a question mark but, right now, this matchup favors the home team.

  302.
Prediction: Raiders lose (4-5)

  303.
Week 11 at Dolphins

  304.

  305.
  306. Photo by Chris Unger/Getty Images
  307.
Christian Wilkins vs Raiders, 2021

  308.

  309.
The Raiders will have a significant advantage when it comes to preparation time for this matchup. They’ll be coming off of a bye week while the Miami Dolphins have a Monday Night Football contest against the Rams six days prior. Miami does have a good team that made the playoffs last year, but this feels like a good upset spot for Las Vegas as Christian Wilkins looks to get revenge on his previous employer.

  310.
Prediction: Raiders win (5-5)

  311.
Week 12 vs Broncos

  312.
Again, the Silver and Black haven't lost to the Broncos since the franchise moved to Sin City, and it’s hard to imagine that will change in 2024. Granted, Nix should have more experience at this point in the season, but the Raiders should be able to defend home turf and get back above .500 here.

  313.

Prediction: Raiders win (6-5)

  314.
Week 13 at Chiefs

  315.
Could Las Vegas pull off back-to-back upsets on a holiday weekend in Kansas City? Maybe, but the Raiders did need a couple of defensive touchdowns to come away with the win during Christmas Day last year and it’s hard to count on that happening again. Unless the offense takes a major step forward this fall, the team is still a year away from taking down the Chiefs.

  316.
Prediction: Raiders lose (6-6)

  317.
Week 14 at Buccaneers

  318.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a bit of a mystery team heading into the campaign. While they won the NFC South last year, that doesn’t say much as it’s one of the worst divisions in the league. Also, quarterback Baker Mayfield has had an up-and-down career and will be without offensive coordinator Dave Canales this fall. With the Black Friday game the week before, the Raiders will have a few extra days to prepare as well.

  319.
Prediction: Raiders win (7-6)

  320.
Week 15 vs Falcons (MNF)

  321.
While the Atlanta Falcons have been the brunt of jokes lately after using a top 10 pick on quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who they didn’t need after signing Kirk Cousins in free agency, the team does have a solid roster. The Falcons should be a playoff contender with Cousins behind center and a strong defense that should be better with a healthy Grady Jarrett in the fold.

  322.
Prediction: Raiders lose (7-7)

  323.
Week 16 vs Jaguars

  324.

  325.

  327.
Gardner Minshew vs Raiders, 2019

  328.

  329.
Which Jacksonville Jaguars team will show up this season; the 2022 version that looked like a future Super Bowl contender, or the 2023 edition that was a massive disappointment? The answer will largely depend on quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s play, but the Jaguars have a solid roster. The team also made a few notable offseason additions like wide receivers Gabe Davis and Brian Thomas Jr. to go along with defensive tackle Arik Armstead.

  330.
Prediction: Raiders lose (7-8)

  331.
Week 17 at Saints

  332.
Every Raider fan likely has this game circled on their calendars for one reason or another. Those who loved Derek Carr will be looking for their ‘gotcha’ moment while his detractors will be hoping Carr fails in dramatic fashion. Regardless of who the New Orleans Saints starting quarterback is, this matchup feels like a toss-up between the two teams.

  333.
Prediction: Raiders win (8-8)

  334.
Week 18 vs Chargers

  335.
The Raiders and Chargers will bookend the season with each other as Las Vegas hosts the finale. With so much uncertainty surrounding Los Angeles this season (see above), predicting where they’ll be at the end of the campaign is difficult. However, Harbaugh’s teams typically get better as the season goes on and finish strong, so a series split seems reasonable.

  336.
Prediction: Raiders lose (8-9)

  337.
Final Record: 8-9

  338.
That last matchup with the Chargers could have a playoff spot on the line for the Silver and Black as two 9-8 teams made the postseason last year. Granted, both were in the NFC and one was the Bucs, who won their division. Pierce finishing with the same record as last year might be disappointing for some, but hovering around .500 isn’t a bad mark for a head coach in his first full season.

  393.
  394.
Fans express their love for the Raiders’ great defensive superstars

I love Raiders’ history.

  395.
So, when our Tuesday Community Question has a historical edge to it, it’s my absolute favorite. That is the case this week as our community question was who was the best defensive player in team history?

  396.

Yes, it’s a brutally difficult question to answer because the Raiders’ history is rich in dynamic defensive superstars.

  397.
There truly is no wrong answers for this question and if you want to go with favorite player instead of the best, have at it.

  398.
Personally, I’m going with Lester Hayes. He was a dominant player who is underrated to this day. Also, The Judge is an absolute gem of a human being.

  399.
But again no wrong answers as your responses show.

  400.
Here are some of your responses:

  401.

  403.

  404.
The "best" is highly debatable. My "favorite"? The Assassin.

  405.

  406.
Mr. Jack Tatum.

  407.

  408.

  409.

  411.

Howie Long, Ted Hendrix, Charles Woodson, Jack Tatum and now Maxx. Hard to pick

  412.

  413.

  415.

  416.
Howie for me.

  417.

  418.
Charles is is right at his heels, though.

  419.

  420.

  421.

  423.

My rankings, from the 80s on, beginning with best: Howie, Woodson, Mack, Maxx.

  424.

  425.

  426.
17 Bob Trey O

  427.

As much as I loved Howie, Hendricks, Hayes, Tatum, Woodson, Willie, etc. It would have to be Mike Haynes. As good of a cover corner as there ever has been. But not only could he cover, he wasn't afraid to tackle. An 8x All-Pro is hard to ignore.

  428.

  429.

  431.

Mike Haynes. The absolute personification of a shutdown corner. Maxx hasn't played long enough but he is on the road to becoming the best defender in a Raiders uniform.

  432.

  433.

  435.

Partial to corners so Willie Brown, Michael Haynes, Charles Woodson and Nnamdi Asomugha with serious nods to Skip Thomas and Lester Hayes.

  436.

  437.

  439.

Jack Tatum without a doubt…he personified the Silver & Black and was a pirate with sword in hand and dared anybody to come across his bow!

  440.

  455.

  456.
Ted Hendricks. He really had an effect on the other team's plan.

  457.
Greg Townsend - He made big plays. At DE, he had a few pic's. Always a threat to sack the QB.

  458.
Lester Hayes - Def. MVP in 1980.

  459.
Rod Martin - 3 picks in the Super Bowl, 1980 season. - He made big plays. Just rock solid.

  460.

  461.
Note* All the other guys are awesome too.

  462.

  463.

  464.

  466.

  467.
Started following the Raiders in 1983 so my real watching doesn't go back to earlier greats.

  468.
Loved Howie, Lyle, Matt Millen, Rod Martin and Lester Hayes on the great team that smashed Washington in SuperBowl XVIII.

  469.
Also a huge fan of Crosby, who will go down as an all time Raider great, Charles Woodson and the never should have been traded Khalil Mack.

  470.
The best Raider defender for me, though in terms of talent, was also on our last SB Champion team - Mike Haynes. Pure class in all aspects of the game.

  471.
Just to start another debate, I'd say getting Haynes from the Pats is the greatest trade in Raider history. He cost us a 1&3 and we got to pair him with Hayes in probably the best CB pairing to ever actually play together on an NFL Team....

  472.

  489.
Raiders free agency: 5 things about Jalen Guyton

  497.
Getting to know veteran speed wide receiver

The Las Vegas Raiders’ added wide receiver Jalen Guyton in free agency this offseason.

  498.
We will be getting to know him more very quickly, but here are five aspects of Guyton the player and person that Raiders fans should know:

  499.

Telesco history:

  500.
Guyton is an answer to a trivia question. He is the first former Los Angeles Chargers’ player the Raiders signed since Tom Telesco became their general manager. Telesco, of course, was the Chargers’ general manager from 2013 until last December when he was fired. Guyton played for Telesco and the Chargers from 2019-23.

  501.
Speed element:

  502.
Guyton can burn. That is his attraction to the Raiders. He gives them speed at the bottom of the rotation. The best chance for Guyton — who has 71 receptions for 1,112 yards and seven touchdowns in his career — to make the roster, would be as the fifth receiver. So, his speed gives him a strong chance to stick out in training camp and in the preseason.

  503.
UDFA history:

  504.
One of Telesco’s strengths as the Chargers’ general manager was identifying undrafted free agents. He hit on several of them during his Chargers’ tenure. Guyton was one of them. While his career stats haven’t been overwhelming, sticking around the NFL for six seasons is an accomplishment for the undrafted free agent.
