  20.  &lt;p&gt;Today we'll take a look at the main players returning from last year in Part 1 of this look at next year's roster&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="OQM23x"&gt;The modern college sports landscape means keeping an eye out for news from your school every day of the offseason. Unhappy players freely transfer out looking for playing time, while players looking to prove themselves in better and/or higher level situations seek power conference roles. Kansas is generally no different, though this transfer season they did have one major difference. &lt;/p&gt;
  21. &lt;p id="4lTQur"&gt;The Jayhawks are the only power conference team not to have a single player transfer out. Kevin McCullar, Parker Braun, and Nic Timberlake maxed out their eligibility and had no choice but to move on. Arterio Morris had already been dismissed from the team before the season started. Johnny Furphy has eligibility remaining but has made it fairly clear his next step is the NBA. While Kansas is losing plenty of players from last year's roster, not a single one is leaving simply because they want out, or a chance to play elsewhere. That said, plenty of new faces are coming in, so where does that leave the Kansas roster? &lt;/p&gt;
  22. &lt;p id="uN443w"&gt;This is the first of a short series taking a look at KU's 2024-25 roster. Today we'll look at the players coming back after starting last year. Keep an eye on the site as we explore lesser-known returning contributors, and the big name transfers we can't wait to see, in separate posts next week. &lt;/p&gt;
  23. &lt;p id="3W61hB"&gt;Returning Contributors&lt;/p&gt;
  24. &lt;p id="2eqsO3"&gt;Dajuan Harris, Jr (senior PG) &lt;/p&gt;
  25. &lt;p id="jhxmq8"&gt;Harris has already announced he's returning for a 5th and final year. Harris has continued to play high level defense and dish out assists, but frustrated fans in recent years by refusing to shoot open shots while the defense locks down the team's top scorers knowing Harris won't even try to hurt them. Hopefully, surrounded by far more offensive firepower this year, KU won't need him to hunt for his own shot so much, and he can comfortably focus on setting up baskets for others. Harris has talent that can help this team, but whether he truly shows it will depend on who is around him, and how much they concern the opposition. &lt;/p&gt;
  26. &lt;p id="LS55UB"&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
  27. &lt;p id="VHJRvK"&gt;KJ Adams, Jr (senior forward) &lt;/p&gt;
  28. &lt;p id="5ZSG7E"&gt;KJ can be one of the most exciting players on the team, with superb length and explosive athleticism. However, his total lack of ability to score away from the basket and bizarre aversion to grabbing rebounds leaves a lot to be desired. In my mind he's best suited as a defensive-minded energy guy off the bench, and shouldn't even be in the conversation to start next to a talented scorer at center, but Self loves his approach, attitude, and toughness and may be hesitant to reduce his minutes. With that said, keeping some of this year's newcomers on the bench just to watch Adams destroy the team's spacing and make life difficult for KU's All-American center would be coaching malpractice, and I assume his role will change at least a bit this year. If nothing else, I would be surprised if he plays anywhere near last year's 34 minutes/game. &lt;/p&gt;
  29. &lt;p id="FxdmQr"&gt;Hunter Dickinson (senior center) &lt;/p&gt;
  30. &lt;p id="xfXISf"&gt;As mentioned under the Adams recap, HD is an All-American center who put up strong numbers (when healthy) last year despite the roster construction allowing teams to zero in on him and beat him up in the post. As long as he and Adams are sharing the floor as little as possible, he should have more room to operate, and maybe find his outside shot again (he's a career 36% 3 point shooter who hit just 23% in Big 12 play this spring). His drop in production was likely due to a both a lack of spacing and HD playing while banged up down the stretch, even before he had to miss the Big 12 Tournament game against Cincinnati. Dickinson is a tremendous talent and as long as his teammates make the opposition pay for devoting 2-3 defenders to him, he could have the best season of what's already been a great career. &lt;/p&gt;

  274.  &lt;p&gt;Two Jayhawks were selected in the 2024 NFL draft, and four more were picked up following the draft as free agents.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="x14nM9"&gt;The 2024 NFL draft was held from April 25-27 this year, and KU saw multiple players taken for the first time since 2015. Gold Star for you if you can name all three Jayhawks taken in the 2015 NFL draft (answers at the bottom). &lt;/p&gt;
  275. &lt;p id="9yrWLh"&gt;For now, let’s take a look at where this year’s pro Jayhawks went and I’ll do my best on a blurb for what kind of situation they’re coming into as they attempt to break into the NFL.&lt;/p&gt;
  276. &lt;h2 id="84PkIG"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;NFL Draft&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
  277. &lt;p id="0SoP64"&gt;OL Dominick Puni, San Francisco, Round 3, Pick 86&lt;/p&gt;
  278. &lt;p id="3fjVRQ"&gt;The &lt;a href="https://www.ninersnation.com/2024/4/26/24142270/breaking-down-san-francisco-49ers-taking-kansas-jayhawks-ol-dominick-puni-at-no-86-in-2024-nfl-draft"&gt;49ers traded up to draft Puni&lt;/a&gt; after a run on offensive linemen, and they reportedly love his run-blocking ability. Puni grades out as an &lt;a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/dominick-puni/32005055-4e14-1154-d73c-5f4c0140ba47"&gt;“average starter”&lt;/a&gt; in the NFL. Since all I really know about the 49ers is their inability to beat the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, I’m not familiar enough with San Francisco’s roster situation to comment, however, most prognosticators seem to expect him to start at guard or center sooner rather than later for the defending NFC champs.&lt;/p&gt;
  279. &lt;p id="YX6Rnj"&gt;DE Austin Booker, Chicago Bears, Round 5, Pick 144&lt;/p&gt;
  280. &lt;p id="IeMUmR"&gt;The Bears also &lt;a href="https://www.windycitygridiron.com/2024/4/27/24142865/2024-nfl-draft-chicago-bears-austin-booker-kansas-edge-rusher-trade-up-round-5"&gt;traded up to select Booker&lt;/a&gt;, who was named the Big 12’s Defensive Newcomer of the Year after posting 56 tackles with 8 sacks in the 2023 campaign. Booker is a bit of a development piece, and probably could have gone higher in the draft had he returned to Kansas for 2024. Regardless, he has the size, he has the tools, and he grades out as an eventual &lt;a href="https://www.nfl.com/prospects/austin-booker/3200424f-4f00-5373-700b-a9f16bc56e46"&gt;“plus starter”&lt;/a&gt; in the NFL. I’d look for him to make an impact in 2025 or 2026.&lt;/p&gt;
  281. &lt;h2 id="4a5F3A"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Undrafted Free Agents&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
  282. &lt;p id="by3jeR"&gt;QB Jason Bean, Indianapolis Colts&lt;/p&gt;
  283. &lt;p id="BaPWyJ"&gt;The Colts just drafted Anthony Richardson at #4 overall in the 2023 NFL draft, so I would imagine he’ll get every chance over the next year or two to justify that selection. However, the backups are the 39-year old Joe Flacco and the 2021 6th-round pick Sam Ehlinger, neither of which is inspiring. Considering Indianapolis did not take a QB in the 2024 draft, Bean may actually have a decent opportunity to earn a roster spot here.&lt;/p&gt;
  284. &lt;p id="cBr9ew"&gt;OL Mike Novitsky, Seattle Seahawks&lt;/p&gt;
  285. &lt;p id="qQZLV9"&gt;The Seahawks have just two centers on their roster at the moment; combined, they have started just five NFL games. That said, it is notable that Seattle spent three draft picks on interior offensive lineman in this draft. The Seahawks are clearly looking to address offensive line, so perhaps Novitsky will have a shot to stick around. According to sources (ok fine, Twitter), Novitsky played 2,302 college snaps without allowing a single sack.&lt;/p&gt;
  286. &lt;p id="jDkiBR"&gt;LB Craig Young, Indianapolis Colts&lt;/p&gt;
  287. &lt;p id="V0kDBL"&gt;A quick review of the roster shows that the Colts still have Zaire Franklin and EJ Speed alongside a crop of otherwise mostly inexperienced linebackers. According to ESPN, the Colts run a base 4-3 defense, and return all six LBs from last year’s two-deep. Young transferred to KU from Ohio State and immediately started on defense, picking up 101 tackles, 6 sacks, and 2 INTs in 2022 and 2023 combined. Considering his pro day 4.56 40-yard dash, at the very least he may have an opportunity to make an impact on special teams.&lt;/p&gt;
  288. &lt;p id="OmLNBb"&gt;DB Kenny Logan, Los Angeles Rams&lt;/p&gt;
  289. &lt;p id="RSN6l4"&gt;KU fan favorite Kenny Logan had an outside chance at getting drafted, but ended up in LA on a free agent deal. The Rams did draft safety Kamren Kinchens out of Miami in the third round and return all four safeties on their two-deep from last year. Logan’s best shot at a roster spot may be on special teams, both as a defender and a returner, as Logan returned both kickoffs and punts during his time at Kansas.&lt;/p&gt;
