20.
USC guy Tim Prangley joins me tonight and to discuss fun USC things! Mr. Prangely covers USC Athletics for USA Today and here on Youtube is part of the The Voice of College Football gang.

  21.

  22.
Some topics:

  23.
What was your impression when you first saw the news that USC was joining the Big Ten?

  24.
What was your reaction from a USC perspective, and then from a reaction of the other, the four teams that were joining, and leaving the other teams behind?

  25.
Where do you think USC will fit into the Big Ten and football in terms of pecking order?

  26.
How hard will it be for you to learn how to hate Iowa? Because the rest of us do, and you’re going to find out sooner or later that there’s reasons for that.

  27.
From the Pac-12 perspective, was this a conference that relatively got along with each other?

  28.
The Big Ten is a conference full of people that - some of us tolerate each other, some of us enjoy each other, and then there’s some that there’s downright some pretty good heavy sports hate about.

  29.
Nebraska does not have much of a history at all with USC. Nebraska has never beaten USC, and that shocked me.

  30.
Last season, USC had a pretty down year. Caleb Williams was the number one overall pick in the NFL draft, but USC did not have a good season. What are we looking at for USC this season, and what do you think of Lincoln Riley and the idea that he doesn’t really care that much about defense?

  31.
Do you think the Big Ten will change the way that USC has to approach football?

  32.
What about other sports, sports other than the football?

  33.

  102.
  103.
Spartans jump out to early lead, win 11-6 over Huskers.

On a day where Nebraska needed to complete a sweep to have a chance at a regular season Big Ten title, Michigan State jumped out to an early lead on their Senior Day and never looked back. The Spartans had been eliminated from postseason play earlier in the weekend, and therefore had nothing of substance to play for on Saturday, but that didn’t stop their senior laden lineup from coming alive in their final game together.

  104.
Nebraska turned to Jackson Brockett for another start, coming off 3 straight solid starts including the no-hitter. He never got comfortable today though, giving up 2 doubles and a hit batter in the first inning, allowing 2 runs. He gained a little confidence, getting the next 3 batters out in order, but couldn't carry that momentum over to the next inning. Michigan state came right back and plated another 2 runs, including an unearned run off of a failed pickoff attempt, putting them up 4-0 after 2.

  105.
The Huskers went with Drew Christo to start the 3rd inning. He went right through the Spartan batters and you thought maybe Nebraska was on to something, but he came out in the 4th and hit his first batter, than caught way too much of the plate on an 0-2 count, giving up an RBI double, followed by a wild pitch, and quickly, his wheels had fallen off. He then ran into the buzz saw that was leadoff man Jack Frank. He finally retired Frank for the first time all day, but still gave up another run, pushing it to 6-0 MSU.

  106.
the Husker offense was non-existent through the first 5 innings, despite getting the leadoff men aboard in the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings. It took until the 6th, when MSU starting pitcher Nick Powers finally seemed to wear down. 3 singles loaded the bases for Dylan Carey who sent a ball right down the left field line past the third baseman for a stand up 2 RBI double. Pinch hitter Gabe Swansen lifted a ball to right for a sac fly, bringing in Will Jeske for another run and moving Carey to 3rd. Carey took off on a wild pitch and was able to score NU’s 4th run of the inning, and Nebraska was back in it at 6-4.

  107.

  108.

  109.
Here come the Huskers.

2-RBI double from DC gets us on the board. pic.twitter.com/D6RyUX5c48
— Nebraska Baseball (@HuskerBaseball) May 18, 2024
  110.

  111.
  112.
  113.

  114.
Will Walsh and Bobby Olson combined to give up another 2 runs to Michigan State in the bottom of the 6th, as the Spartans put another 2 runners on in front of Frank and he capitalized again with another RBI. In all 4 singles plated the 2 runs, and would have been another except Josh Overbeek playing in to cut off a run snatched a hard hit ball in the 5.5 hole and fired home with Josh Caron just barely getting the tag down in time to keep the score at 8-4.

  115.
Nebraska finally was able to go against the less than stellar MSU bullpen in the 7th and got the 2 runs from the last inning right back. After a walk by Cole Evans and single from Cayden Brumbaugh, the red hot Case Sanderson drove a ball into the outfield, bringing Evans home. Later in the inning Tyler Stone put a charge into a ball that looked like it had a chance to tie the game, but fell into a glove on the warning track, allowing Brumbaugh to score and make it 8-6.

  116.

  117.

  118.
Case Sanderson is red hot. pic.twitter.com/YhaN5XC2rK
— Nebraska Baseball (@HuskerBaseball) May 18, 2024
  119.

  120.
  121.
  122.

  123.
The Husker bullpen couldn’t hold though as Michigan State grabbed 3 more runs in the bottom of the 7th, culminating with Frank collecting his 2nd double, 4th hit and 3rd RBI of the day, bringing the score to its final 11-6 margin. Nebraska added 2 singles in each of the final 2 innings, but couldn’t bust through for another run.

  124.
While it is a sour end to the weekend, the result of the game didn’t end up affecting the championship race because as off publishing Illinois was ahead of Purdue 17-8. Nebraska did lock down the two seed for the Big Ten Tournament that starts Tuesday in Omaha and will take on Ohio State, as we look for a probable rematch between Brett Sears and Landon Beidelschies which we saw in early April. Sears pitched a complete game shutout in the 3-0 win for NU. The game will take place at 2pm at Charles Schwab Field.

  144.
Nebraska has to take care of business in East Lansing, then all eyes turn to West Lafayette.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (34-18) at Michigan State Spartans (23-27)

  145.
Location: McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field, East Lansing, MI

  146.
Date/Time: May 18th at 11 am CDT

  147.
Head Coaches: Jake Boss Jr. (16th season, 432-394) & Will Bolt (5th season, 131-93-1)

  148.
TV/Stream: BTN

  149.
Radio: Huskers Radio Network, Huskers.com, Huskers App

  150.
Probable Pitchers: LHP Jackson Brockett (2-0, 2.82 ERA) vs. TBD

  151.
It all comes down to this. If Nebraska can finish the sweep at Michigan State, it will tie first place Illinois at 17 wins. Then it comes down to watching and hoping Purdue can salvage one game from Illinois. That would bring a championship to Lincoln and with the tiebreakers give Nebraska the top seed in Omaha for the BigTen Tournament. Nebraska can only be one of the top two seeds at this point.

  152.
You don’t even have to ask. I already looked for you. There is zero percent chance of precipitation in East Lansing around game time. More importantly, there is only a 6% chance of precipitation in West Lafayette. So the fateful tarp should hopefully sit in its home along the left field wall. Purdue needs the game themselves, to tie Iowa and Michigan at 14 wins for 4th place. That should put Purdue in 4th with the tiebreakers (if I’m computing them right) instead of potentially 6th or 7th, so they still have a lot to play for.

  153.
Hopefully Illinois celebration of winning a share of the league title that they had Friday will provide a bit of a letdown emotionally for them too. BTN will cut to Illinois at Purdue (first pitch at 2pm CDT) immediately following the Husker game, so lots of baseball to watch today, let’s get to it!!

  197.
  198.
After today’s 11-3 win over Sparty, all eyes are on Illinois vs. Purdue

The other half of the best pitching duo in the Big Ten Conference took the mound for Nebraska today, looking to put Nebraska one-step closer to winning the B1G regular season title. Mason McConnaughey has come into his own the past few weeks and was set face off against a desperate Spartan team trying to get to Omaha next week.

  199.

  200.
McConnaughey would have no easy task, facing an offensive lineup that had seven hits last night and walked away frustrated they didn’t get hits when they needed them the most. He also faced off against Sparty’s best pitcher, tall, lanky, lefty Joseph Dzierwa. Michigan State had not lost a game Dzierwa started over the last month, winning four games in a row.

  201.

  202.
Nebraska came out very determined, and with the lead-off batter only getting on base once last night, Cayden Brumbaugh changed that right away with a base hit to start the game. He also was the first Cornhusker to cross the plate two batters later when Josh Caron launched a mighty home run to give the Big Red a 2-0 lead.

  203.

  207.
  208.
  209.

  210.
The boys from Lincoln struck again in the second. With one out, Cole Evans worked a walk and Riley Silva follow up with a single. After a second strikeout in the inning by Dzierwa, Brumbaugh poked his second base hit of the game, scoring Evans and Overbeek. Case Sanderson followed with another one-bagger to score to score Brumbaugh, who had swiped second. The Cornhuskers had no problem picking up the ball from the lefthander and after two innings were in control, 5-0.

  211.

  212.
McConnaughey dominated, facing one batter over the minimum through five innings, with only one hitter finding his way into scoring position. He flooded the strike zone and had the Spartans guessing. The knuckle-curve was devastating and the boys from MSU had a lot of difficulty putting the barrel on the ball.

  213.

  214.

  215.
Five strong from #51.

Huskers holding a 5-0 lead. pic.twitter.com/1pktSfyjNP
— Nebraska Baseball (@HuskerBaseball) May 17, 2024
  216.

  217.
  218.
  219.

  220.
Nebraska put runners on base in the middle innings, thanks in large part to Dzierwa’s wildness. However, he worked himself out of jams, striking out eleven Cornhuskers in the seven innings he worked. His unorthodox delivery made him more deceptive at times, especially when he changed speeds.

  221.

  222.
The Spartans finally got something going in their half of the sixth inning, all of it on two outs. Their standout lead-off man, Jack Frank stroked a double. Then the next three batters all recording singles. When the dust cleared, MSU scored three runs, and McConnaughey was replaced by Jalen Worthley to get the last out of the inning. After six innings, the score was now 5-3 Cornhuskers. Michigan State had some momentum.

  223.

  224.
Dzierwa gave up a hit to Sanderson in the seventh inning, but worked through it, capping it with a strikeout to end his night on the mound. Worthley quieted the Spartans in the bottom half, extinguishing their momentum.

  225.

  226.
That led to Tommy Szczeepanski coming in to face Nebraska in the eighth. To provide a little foreshadowing, he was the first of three pitchers in the inning for MSU. Nebraska scored four more runs on only two hits to extend their lead to 9-3. That took the starch out of the Spartans.

  227.

  228.

  231.
  232.
  233.

  234.
Casey Daiss came in for Nebraska to pitch the top of the eighth. He worked around a single by Frank and a walk to keep Michigan State off the board.

  235.

  236.
Nebraska added insurance in the top of the ninth. Dylan Carey led off with a solo home run. Riley Silva then singled after an out and stole second for his conference leading 31st stolen base of the year. He scored on a double by Joshua Overbeek.

  243.

  244.
Kyle Froehlich made quick work of the Spartans in the bottom of the ninth secure the series win.

  245.

  246.
This was a complete game for Nebraska. Very good pitching and very good offense. This is the way you want your team playing at the end of the season. The 11-3 win was very workman-like, and the kind of performance Cornhusker fans expect out of a Will Bolt coached team.

  247.

  252.
  253.

  254.
Nebraska fans will be watching the next game on BTN between Illinois and Purdue. A Boilermaker win would leave the door open for a Cornhusker title. If Illinois does not win tonight, it will be all tied up going into Championship Saturday.

  255.

  256.
Michigan State has been eliminated from the tournament, so they will be playing for pride tomorrow. Jackson Brockett will start for the Cornhuskers with the game starting at 11:00 to accommodate BTN.

  257.

  258.

  259.
Notes:

  260.
· Nearly the whole lineup contributed at the plate tonight. Seven players had hits and all nine reached base.

  261.
· Case Sanderson and Riley Silva were both 3-5. Sanderson had three RBI.

  262.
· Josh Caron, Cayden Brumbaugh, and Dylan Carey had two hits each. Caron and Carey homered.

  263.
· Joshua Overbeek had one hit, a double that scored a run.

  264.
· Four Nebraska pitchers gave up a combined six hits, recorded eight strikeouts, and surrendered three walks.

  293.
The Huskers go for the series at Sparty.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (33-18) at Michigan State Spartans (23-26)

  294.
Location: McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field, East Lansing, MI

  295.
Date/Time: May 17th at 4pm CDT

  296.
Head Coaches: Jake Boss Jr. (16th season, 432-393) & Will Bolt (5th season, 130-93-1)

  297.
TV/Stream: BTN

  298.
Radio: Huskers Radio Network, Huskers.com, Huskers App

  299.
Probable Pitchers: RHP Mason McConnaughey (6-3, 3.09 ERA) vs. LHP Nick Powers (6-4, 5.69 ERA)

  300.
Nebraska has achieved objective #1 on the weekend and clinched a top 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, which means they will play on Tuesday. That gives them an extra day of rest for the bullpen and potentially a lot of rest if they win their first game or 2.

  301.
Now for the primary objective. They sit 1 game back of Illinois still, but hold all tiebreakers. So any combination of 3 Purdue or Husker wins gives NU not only a tie for the championship, but the top seed in Omaha.

  302.
Michigan State has one consistently good pitcher on their staff, and he started yesterday’s game. They often have to win Saturday games 12-10 or in that neighborhood, and almost never win on Sundays. So Nebraska should feel good having McConnaughey and a hot Brockett in waiting.

  323.
With the Nebraska Spring Game firmly in the rearview, it’s time to look to the future. The future includes:

  324.
A 6:30pm kickoff with Colorado in Lincoln

  325.
- how successful has Nebraska been in night games in the last ten years?

  326.
A 4-star quarterback commits to the Huskers for the 2025 class

  327.
- the young man from Orange, CA appears to be 5-heart as well

  328.
Mike Riley joins the College Football Playoff committee

  329.
- he certainly won’t hold any ill-will for being future-endeavored by Nebraska

  330.
Matt Rhule was on ESPN recently. He discussed:

  331.
- what the team emphasized in the Spring

  332.
- why WR additions Neyor and Banks ae crucial

  333.
- and most important - how to not turn the ball over 32 times.

  334.
The Panel for the show may be a game time decision, as we don’t know who will be on the show yet. But the Chatterfields will be there, and that’s always a good time!
