20.
UNC and Louisville are the supposed frontrunners currently.

Thus far, the search for a true center has been tumultuous to say the least, with the Heels striking out on a number of targets. However, the beauty of the transfer portal, at least in this case, is that there are almost always going to be more options available. The latest name to be linked to Carolina is seven-footer Ugonna Onyenso, who spent the last two seasons with Kentucky.

 21.
Onyenso averaged 3.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game for the Wildcats this past year. Despite notching just 18.6 minutes per contest, Onyenso’s 2.8 bpg tied for fifth in the country. He is one of the best rim protectors in college basketball and an overall elite defensive presence. He was also efficient around the basket, shooting 55% from the field.

 22.
In addition to entering the transfer portal, Onyenso also placed his name in the NBA draft without an agent and is committed to going through that process and getting as much feedback as possible. His desire is to remain in the draft if things go well. However, given he’s currently No. 65 in ESPN’s latest rankings of the top prospects available, the odds of Onyenso working his way into the first round are slim. With that, the expectation is Onyenso will ultimately return for another year of school.

 23.
The main thing Onyenso wants to prove to scouts is he can actually shoot and he’s more than just a paint presence. With just one three attempted in his entire career, it will be difficult to win them over in such a short amount of time. However, if he needs a school that will give him the freedom to hoist, Hubert Davis is the guy to see.

 24.
With Jalen Washington and Zayden High on the roster, Coach Davis already has a couple bigs with some shooting prowess. Neither of those dudes are seven feet tall, though. With the departure of Armado Bacot, the Heels need a physically imposing presence to help fill the void. Onyenso’s size and shot-blocking ability make him an excellent fit with this roster. With plenty of minutes available, Onyenso would have the opportunity to make his mark in the paint while continuing to expand his offensive repertoire.

 25.
Onyenso’s uncle is currently talking to schools for him while he maintains his focus on the draft. Thus, it could be a while before we get a concrete decision. Carolina and Louisville are considered to be the favorites at this point with Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Alabama, and Georgetown also in the mix.

 53.
Junior centerfielder and power hitter extraordinaire Vance Honeycutt and ace pitcher Matthew Matthijs join 66 other semifinalists for consideration by the National College Baseball Writers Association. A winner will be decided on June 8th, right before the College World Series begins in Omaha, Nebraska.

 54.
Vance Honeycutt is having a great season, recently becoming UNC’s all-time leader in home runs. He’s hitting career-highs in batting average (.333), slugging (.737), and on-base percentage (.430). He’s matched his season-high in RBIs (57) with plenty of the season and post-season to go, along with 22 home runs and 27 stolen bases. He also remains a ballhawk in centerfield, though he doesn’t have quite as many stolen home runs this season.

 55.
Matthew Matthijs is tied for most wins in college baseball with 11 (11-3 record in 28 appearances). He has a 3.95 ERA and is holding opposing batters to a .253 batting average to go along with 43 strikeouts in 43.3 innings.

 56.
The Dick Howser Trophy has been awarded to college baseball’s best player since 1987. No UNC player has ever won it, and only seven ACC players have taken the trophy home. Vance Honeycutt figures to have the best odds of the two Diamond Heels in contention, not only because of his numbers, but the impact that his plays have.

 57.
Carolina is in contention for a #1 seed, so there’s every chance Honeycutt or Matthijs could accept the award in Omaha before taking the field for UNC. Good luck to both Diamond Heels on this tremendous recognition!

 77.
 78.
Going, going...

The transfer portal is an unpredictable and volatile place.

 79.
After landing Cade Tyson as a long-range bomber to replace Cormac Ryan, Hubert Davis and Co.’s shift focused to big man Cliff Omoruyi to fill Armando’s size 17’s down low. Then he opted for Alabama. The search continues.

 80.
Harrison Ingram appears like he could be the next player that might need to be cloned. It seemed like the coaching staff had their wagon hitched to Adou Thiero for the role but he ultimately followed Calipari to his new home at Arkansas.

 81.
[side eye toward the SEC]

 82.
With the NBA draft combine coming to an end on Sunday, May 19th, let’s take a look at the latest Harrison news from the combine and mock drafts.

 83.
The most recent mock on NBA.com has Harrison going to the New York Knicks as the 25th pick, up two spots from their previous mock. According to their Jonathan Wasserman, there are concerns regarding whether his breakout junior year at UNC was a fluke considering his two less-than-stellar seasons at Stanford along with his inability to pass the 67% mark from the free throw line in his college career.

 84.
ESPN’s Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo list Ingram as the 34th pick by the Portland Trailblazers in their post-lottery mock, but on nbadraft.net he’s all the way down to #48 in round two, landing with the San Antonio Spurs.

 85.
He performed very well in his first combine scrimmage, scoring 14 points, pulling down four rebounds, and snatching three steals.

 86.
Harrison recently stated that he is “all-in” on the NBA draft.

 87.

 89.
UNC stud Harrison Ingram says he’s “all-in” on the NBA Draft.

Also explains his conversations with the North Carolina staff and the exploding NIL market. pic.twitter.com/9yNsirAZWR
— Isaac Trotter (@Isaac__Trotter) May 14, 2024

 95.
With his unbridled energy and infectious personality, the 6’7 junior transfer became an instant fan favorite in Chapel Hill. It would be bittersweet to see him go but I’m sure the Tar Heel fanbase would be universally supportive of Harrison’s next chapter regardless of what he decides. The draft withdrawal deadline is May 29th so stay tuned!

 115.
 116.
Can UNC add to the school’s national championship list?

Today out in California, another North Carolina Tar Heels team will continue their quest for a national championship. The UNC women’s golf team is among the 30 to qualify for the final rounds of the NCAA Championships, which are set to begin today at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, CA.

 117.
Carolina will be one of 30 teams to compete over the next couple days, having qualified after a good finish at the Auburn Regional. Their third place finish out of 12 teams was enough to get the into the final field of 30. As a team, the Tar Heels finished at +21 over par over the course of the three rounds, 11 shots back of regional winners Auburn. However, that was seven shots clear of the sixth-placed finished needed to avoid elimination. Kayla Smith led the way for Carolina on an individual level, finishing tied for fifth among players at -1, with Megan Streicher tied for seventh at +1.

 118.
Now this week, all 30 teams remaining after the regional will compete starting today. Over the next three days, every team will compete in three rounds of stroke play, after which the field will be trimmed in half. At that point, those teams will then play a further round of stroke play to determine the top eight teams. (Those four rounds will also be used to crown an NCAA individual champion.) Once down to eight, the teams will be seeded and placed in a bracket. Each team will then select five golfers to face off in five one-on-one match play rounds. Which ever team wins three matches will advance on to the semifinals, and then the final, until a champion is crowned.

 119.
Having finished third in their regional, you can — somewhat crudely — extrapolate that UNC is somewhere in the #13-18 range going into this week. As a team for the season, they’re ranked #27 in the country as of Monday. While they’re in the field and anything can happen on the day, that means it will likely be a close call for the Tar Heels for advancing to the top 15, never mind the top eight or further than that. On an individual level, Streicher and Smith are UNC’s best hopes most likely, coming in ranked #48 and #67 in the country respectively.

 120.
While they’ll come in as underdogs, it would certainly be great if the UNC women’s golf team could add to the school’s national championship tally in a few day’s time. Best of luck!

 166.
The former Tar Heel will be in the rafters.

On Wednesday morning, the Brooklyn Nets announced on social media that they will retire Vince Carter’s No. 15 jersey. The former Tar Heel, who played under Dean Smith and Bill Guthridge, played five seasons with the Nets and was surprised by former teammate Jason Kidd in a video sharing the news.

 167.
The interaction can be watched here:

 175.
Carter played a lengthy NBA career for a handful of teams, but left quite the mark with the Nets -- who were formerly in New Jersey -- when he was there. In his tenure from 2004-09, Carter averaged 23.6 points per game and set the franchise single-season scoring record in 2006-07. He was a three-time all star while in New Jersey, but will be remembered much more for the high-flying and highlight reel moments he produced.

 176.
Vince Carter will be just the seventh Nets player found in the rafters when the ceremony officially takes place next season. Along with this accolade, Carter will also be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame this summer. The 47-year-old can also be found in the rafters of the Dean E. Smith Center, where he was a second-team All-American.

 177.
As Vince Carter drifts farther away from his time on the hardwood, I’d assume recognition will continue to pile in for the record-setting 22-year NBA veteran.

 178.
Congratulations, Vince!

 197.
 198.
UNC’s final regular season action will be a rivalry series in Durham

With UNC’s planned midweek game at UNC Wilmington cancelled, the Diamond Heels have just three games left in their regular season before the ACC Tournament and Selection Monday after that. Those three games are pretty hugely consequential — the Tar Heels will be playing at Duke this weekend in a series that could make UNC the ACC’s overall regular season champion and will have quite a lot to do with the selection committee’s assessment of the two teams’ fitness to be national seeds. The series will go Thursday-Friday-Saturday to leave some room between the last game and the start of the postseason, with the following start times:

 199.

 200.
After a decisive win hosting Campbell followed by a sweep of a then-hot Louisville team, UNC’s human rankings are catching up to the computer ones, and they’re a consensus top-5-ish team in good position to be a top-8 seed in the NCAA Tournament. It seems that most people who do rankings have finally seen enough to believe in UNC as a legit national contender despite the Heels’ only okay record against high-level competition. As I’ve said previously, a series win at Duke is a really good way to change that statistic — though without the UNCW game, the Heels would need a sweep to get their Quadrant 1 record above .500.

 201.

 202.
D1Baseball: 7 (+4)

 203.
Baseball America: 4 (+4)

 204.
NCBWA: 5 (+5)

 205.
USA Today Coaches Poll: 5 (+6)

 206.
Perfect Game: 6 (+6)

 207.

 208.
The series against Louisville was mostly defined by offense, as the Heels outscored the Cardinals across the three games 36-15. Vance Honeycutt was the story of the first game, hitting solo home runs in his first two at-bats to take sole ownership of UNC’s career home runs record. The second one, which came in the third inning, was part of a four-home run barrage that put the game pretty much out of reach for Louisville early. The Cardinals had taken the lead after an uncharacteristically messy start from Jason DeCaro; he loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the second and allowed two runs, one off a bases-loaded walk. He’d loaded the bags in the top of the first, two, but gotten out of that jam unscathed. After he settled in and pitched a 1-2-3 third, Honeycutt tied the game to lead off the bottom of the frame and was followed by two-run blasts by Parks Harber and Alberto Osuna, then another solo shot from Gavin Gallaher. The score was 7-2 after three innings and UNC was on their way to a pretty uncontested win. Osuna added another home run in the fourth, and Anthony Donofrio broke out of a recent slump with an 8th-inning moonshot before Colby Wilkerson’s RBI single in the 8th pushed the margin to 14-4 and activated the run rule, “walking off” the game. DeCaro took the win with 5.0 innings of work, but it wasn’t his best outing: 5 hits, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3K. Matthew Matthijs gave up just a solo home run in 2.2 innings of relief work before Dalton Pence got the final out for the Heels.

 209.
Saturday’s game was the most tightly contested of the bunch. Shea Sprague, like DeCaro, struggled to find his stuff against the Cardinals, giving up an uncharacteristic amount of free bases. He was able to mostly avoid big damage in the first three innings, allowing one run on three hits. Louisville got the hang of him in the fourth inning, though, getting ahead of UNC 4-3 with a three-run homer. Fortunately, the UNC bats jumped on Louisville starter Evan Webster just as early, chasing him off the mound in the top of the fourth inning after he loaded the bases with nobody out by walking Honeycutt and hitting Casey Cook. The Heels scratched across two runs in the inning that proved to be decisive, putting UNC back up 5-4. Louisville’s reliever Patrick Forbes threw three impressive shutout innings to give his team a chance to get the game back, but the Tar Heel relievers were every bit his equal. Matt Poston, throwing as a reliever rather than his usual role as a closer, threw 2.2 innings of 1-hit ball before Pence came in for a slightly sweaty two-out save. The Heels added an insurance run courtesy of a Honeycutt sac fly in the 7th, leading to a 6-4 final score.

 210.
Sunday looked more like Friday than Saturday. This time, it was the second inning that gave the Heels an insurmountable lead. Luke Stevenson got things started with a three-run blast, and Honeycutt was close behind with a two-run jack over the scoreboard in left center. The heart of the UNC lineup loaded the bases with two outs before Gavin Gallaher deposited a line drive into left, driving in two more, and then Stevenson brought him home with a base hit up the middle. The Heels were up 8-0 and apparently set to go on cruise control, adding 3 runs in the fourth by way of a Casey Cook long ball. Aidan Haugh managed the Louisville bats impressively through four shutout innings, but got hit around in the fifth as the Cardinals showed off the offense that had made them a scary team down the stretch of the ACC regular season. They started the inning with a leadoff home run before a couple of base hits followed by a throwing error by Parks Harber from first base drove in another run and left runners at the corners. The Cards then flexed a little power, as the next two batters drove in 4 runs with an RBI double and a 3-run blast. With a 5-run cushion still to work with, Scott Forbes left Haugh in to clean up the mess, and he retired the next two Cardinals to finish his day. After Connor Bovair entered in the 6th and gave up a run while looking uncomfortable, Ben Peterson came in for probably his most impressive outing as a Tar Heel. In 3.2 innings, he faced 13 batters, allowed 1 hit, hit one more batter, and retired the rest, including 8 strikeouts. Peterson has had command issues all season but has probably the liveliest arm in the UNC pen, and if he can throw like this going forward, UNC’s ceiling is much higher. Stevenson might have stolen the show from him, however, as he drove in a run with a sac fly in the 6th before crushing another three-run homer in the eighth to bring his RBI total for the night up to a staggering 8 as the Heels won 16-7.

 211.
Looking forward at the series against Duke, the Heels will face a slightly different Duke team than has played their previous ACC series, because ace Tyler Santucci won’t be throwing Thursday night. The possible first-round draft pick, who has given up the fewest runs in the ACC and is in the conference’s top-5 in most pitching stats, sustained an injury to his right-side ribs last week and will not be able to play against UNC. The Blue Devils are still pretty formidable, though. They rank third in the ACC in both staff ERA and team batting average, with a lot of capable guys on both sides of the ball. In their lineup, third baseman Ben Miller is batting .410 on the season and has plenty of power to go with it and freshman outfielder A.J. Gracia now holds the Duke home run and RBI records for a freshman with 12 and 51, respectively, while batting .330. As far as arms that UNC will see, it appears that regular Saturday starter Kyle Johnson will pitch the Thursday night game. The freshman has also accrued starts in the outfield and at DH for the Devils and has been pretty solid with the bat and ball. He’s got a 4.46 ERA with 42 strikeouts in 40.1 innings pitched across 13 appearances, but has been hit around in the months of April and May. The Heels will also probably see Andrew Healy, who had a great season last year but has struggled this season with a 4.85 ERA and not a lot of decision-worthy starts. The Devils’ bullpen also features Charlie Beilenson, who’s one of the best relievers in the country.

 212.
And finally, here’s our last look at UNC’s statistical leaders before the regular season wraps up:

 253.

 254.
 255.
The McDonald’s All-American provided good insight into why he decided to become a Tar Heel.

Fun fact: I was today years old when I learned that pre-college basketball players have their own podcasts. Players sitting in front of a mic to discuss their love of basketball, pop culture, and even their personal lives in some cases, has become pretty popular these days. Why do I bring this up? Because I was also today years old when I Learned that incoming UNC freshman Ian Jackson has a podcast called The Captain Jack Podcast, and he recently discussed how he wanted to play college basketball at Kentucky but ended up committing to the Tar Heels.

 256.
Here is what Jackson said when discussing the reason he chose UNC, and his comments about his previous desire to play for the Wildcats:

 257.

“Hubert Davis,” Jackson said regarding why he picked UNC. “I wanted to go to Kentucky. It was Hubert Davis. He’s just like a family guy. He’s a good, genuine guy that you want to be around. Not saying Coach (John) Calipari isn’t. Coach Davis is a good coach.”

 258.
Players discussing their “dream schools” after committing to other programs is definitely not a new development in college basketball, but what is interesting here is that Jackson has every intention of being a one-and-done player but chose to play for Hubert Davis anyway. This isn’t to say that Davis doesn’t know a thing or two about the NBA, what it takes for players to get there, and what players should expect, but he also doesn’t have the resume that John Calipari has when it comes to getting players in the league. This is mostly because of how new of a head coach he is, but the 2024-25 season presents an opportunity to get 2-3 players into the league, including Jackson.

 259.
Jackson’s willingness to trust Hubert Davis is a development that should go a long way in helping them recruit future five-star players, but obviously he has to prove he can produce one-and-done players at the end of the day. Thankfully Jackson and Davis have already discussed the ultimate goal and how to make it happen.

 260.

“[Coach Davis] understands what I want to do,” Jackson said. “He knows my plan. He’s like, ‘Alright, I’m with it. Let’s get you out of here. You come here, do this and that, and get you out of here…’ I could average 15-16 points (per game). Averaging 18 (ppg) isn’t hard, though.”

 261.
It will be exciting to see what Jackson is able to accomplish at UNC as an incoming freshman. Things will be really interesting as far as how his minutes will be split with RJ Davis, but it’s ultimately a great problem for Hubert Davis to have. (RJ) Davis had to put the team on his back in so many situations last season that things crumbled when he had his one bad game against Alabama. Jackson is a guy that is more than capable of running up the scoreboard as long as he doesn’t fall victim to freshman jitters, which is something he discussed on his podcast as well.

 262.

“I think about [making my UNC debut] every day,” Jackson said. “I’m going to college with the mindset that it’s the hardest basketball ever played. When I get there, I’ ‘m going to train so hard. I don’t want to go in there thinking that it’s high school and I can do this or that. I want to over-psyche myself so when I go in there I’m like, ‘Maybe this isn’t that bad.’ I don’t want to get humbled.”

 263.
What do you think of Jackson’s comments? Also what do you expect from him this fall? Let us know in the comments below.
