20.
The Hurricanes blow a 3-1 lead in the third period to end their season.

The Carolina Hurricanes were dominating play most of the game as they built a 3-1 lead before the New York Rangers took advantage of a “goal that cannot happen” and the visitors gained the momentum and ramped up the rest of the way to send the home team golfing.

 21.
When Brind’Amour was asked about the goal after the game, he had this to say.

 22.

“We started out really good and then obviously that goal was a tough one. Just can’t happen. You can’t give a team like that a goal and we gave them a couple. That’s really not good and the momentum changed.”

 23.
The coach was not asked if he considered changing goalies, but regardless he stuck with Andersen the remainder of the game and the rest is history.

 24.
I don’t think it can be emphasized enough about how a soft goal like that can literally suck the life out of a hockey team. And it looked like that is exactly what happened.

 25.
The Canes came out buzzing in the opening period and were outshooting the Rangers, 8-3 as they took a 1-0 lead off a nice Martin Necas shot. Jordan Martinook had the assist and played his heart out in this one.

 26.
Martinook literally dived 20 feet to save a goal in the second period that slipped through the goalie’s 5-hole, otherwise the score would have been even worse.

 27.
Seth Jarvis made it 2-0 early in the second when he knocked in a rebound during a powerplay chance.

 28.
Vincent Trocheck made it 2-1 shortly after when he tipped a shot in.

 29.
Midway through the second, Sebastian Aho broke in alone and was set up by a beautiful pass by Andrei Svechnikov, and he made it 3-1.

 30.
The Canes would hit the post numerous times and miss a few close chances, but they could not light the lamp another time.

 31.
At 6:43 into the third, Kris Kreider scored the first of his three goals in the period off a goal by Andersen which was inexcusable.

 32.
The goalie had the puck stopped by his skate up against the post, but then for some reason he moved his skate a bit and Kreider pushed the puck in the opening.

 33.
From that point on, it seemed like a different game. Kreider would add a couple more goals to complete a hat-trick and then an empty netter sealed the deal.

 34.
There will be plenty of time for analysis and discussion during the offseason. Several of these players will not be back, but Frederik Andersen is under contract for next year so the Canes will need to get creative if they want to move on from him.

 35.
Brind’Amour seemed to take the loss in stride saying that his team “lost to the best team in the league”, but still, the Hurricanes were favored by the bookies to win every game this series.

 36.
They were favored to win the Cup at the beginning of the season.

 37.
The Hurricanes dominated for much of the five-on-five play in the series. Their goaltending and special teams let them down.

 38.
Owner Tom Dundon once said that winning and/or losing in the playoffs mostly came down to luck. We will see what he has to say after this series.

 39.
Luke DeCock was on Joe Ovies’ post game YouTube broadcast and said “this was the worst loss in Hurricanes history”. Those are strong words but the writer has been covering the team for 24 years. He should know.

 40.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzpXs1w2LD4

 68.
The Canes return home for another must win game.

The Carolina Hurricanes have returned home for yet another must win game against the New York Rangers Thursday night. Game time is 7 P.M. and it will be televised by TNT.

 69.
This one is real simple. If the Canes win, they return to Madison Square Garden for a deciding game seven. If they lose, the season is over.

 70.
After losing the first three games of the series by the slimmest of margins, the Canes have won the last two. Monday night’s, 4-1 Carolina win was the first time either team won by more than one goal.

 71.
Jordan Staal scored his first goal of the playoffs with a power move inside that tied the game and got Carolina’s game cooking. Will the Captain get hot and continue his scoring?

 72.
Sebastian Aho leads the Canes with 10 points in 10 playoff games, (3G 7A). Guentzel 4G 5A, Svechnikov 2G 7A, and Skjei 1G 8A, have nine points each also in 10 games.

 73.
Carolina Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour has been committed to Frederik Andersen for most of these playoffs and I would expect him to start this game as well.

 74.
Andersen has a 6-3-0 record with a save percentage of .902 and a GAA of 2.46.

 75.
At the other end of the rink, Igor Shesterkin has a 7-2-0 record with a .924 save percentage and a GAA of 2.33. Of course, those stats were much better before the last two New York losses.

 76.
Mika Zibanejad leads the Rangers with 13 points, 3G 10A, in nine games. Trochek is next with 12 points, 4G 8A.

 77.
Artemi Panarin, who had 120 points in the regular season has nine points so far, 4G 5A.

 78.
While Brett Pesce returned to the ice in Wednesday’s practice, he did not skate with the top six on defense and it would be surprising if he slotted in this game.

 79.
I expect the same line up as Monday night for Carolina. This probably will not be confirmed until just before game time.

 100.

 101.
 102.
Things have just gotten interesting

The last time the final horn sounded in Madison Square Garden in this series, cheers were raining down on the ice as the Rangers had taken a 2-0 lead in the series thanks to an OT winner.

 103.
On Monday, the horn echoed around the walls of a nearly empty building, only punctured by a few boos of the fans hoping to celebrate a series win.

 104.
The Hurricanes are looking to do something few have done in hockey before, and they took the second step by defeating New York 4-1 on Monday Night. What was once a 3-0 Rangers series lead has been chopped to 3-2, and Game 6 will be back in Raleigh.

 105.
The game started in a different manner than Saturday’s Game 5 win. The Rangers started with an urgency they failed to have in the last game, and the Hurricanes had to withstand a strong push from the Rangers to get up early. Rod Brind’Amour once again went with Frederik Andersen in net, and despite the doubts with wear and tear (including from this author), Andersen stood strong in the first. shutting out the Rangers.

 106.
After the initial push the Canes had a few chances themselves, but had to withstand a New York Rangers Power Play with 1:55 left in the first as Evgeny Kuznetsov committed a slashing penalty that evoked his untimely penalty in Game 1. Unlike that game, though, the Canes held off the Rangers through that one and then in an ensuing power play when Dmitry Orlov committed a pretty clear trip. The Canes Penalty Kill, a weakness to start the series, had arrived.

 107.
Unfortunately the Power Play is still mostly missing in action. Shortly after they killed off the Orlov penalty, the Canes had their own chance when Jack Roslovic tripped Orlov, however, a miscommunication near the blue line created a collision, a turnover, a two on one, and Jacob Trouba burried a one time shot by Freddie to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The rest of the second period passed with the Canes feebly trying to beat the Rangers’ Igor Shesterkin, but he stood tall. It wasn’t that tough for him as the Canes just couldn’t muster any offense up close.

 108.
With 20 minutes left in their season, the Canes once again wasted a power play, however, they used the momentum to build a game. The Rangers played tight defense trying to protect the lead and relying on Shesterkin, however, The Captain finally put a crack in the dam. He took advantage of a great pass, and just charged to the net, putting it past Igor to knot the game at one just 3:33 into the third.

 109.

 111.
JORDAN STAAL TIES IT FOR THE CANES pic.twitter.com/4zPMg7Nsch
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 14, 2024

 113.
 114.
 115.

 116.
Throughout the series the Canes have been the much better five on five team, and it showed in the third. With the momentum on their side, the Canes just kept pushing. The Rangers only got about two shots on Freddie in about 20 minutes of game action, never getting any traction on their power play, and really not spending a lot of time in the offensive zone at five on five. A mere three minutes after the Staal score, Kuznetsov hit the Rangers with the game winner and the bird took flight again.

 117.

 118.

 119.
KUZNETSOV HITS THE BIRD CELLY ON 'EM WITH THE 2-1 LEAD

MSG IS STUNNED pic.twitter.com/mHKYIH1Tf6
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 14, 2024
 120.

 121.
 122.
 123.

 124.
MSG was stunned, as were the Rangers, and it showed in yet another three minutes as Jordan Martinook decided to have a Marty Party and make it 3-1

 125.

 126.

 127.
THREE IN THE THIRD FOR CAROLINA... THEY LOOK READY TO PLAY A GAME 6 pic.twitter.com/x3geHYUSOw
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 14, 2024
 128.

 129.
 130.
 131.

 132.
It was effectively over at that point. Andrei Svechnikov had a momentarily brain lapse and threw the puck out of play for one last penalty, but the Rangers couldn’t get any traction on it whatsoever. By the end, the New York fans—expecting a party—had quickly turned into booing the Blueshirts. It was so loud that both play-by-play man Sean McDonough and color commentator Ray Ferraro were stunned at just how quickly the crowd turned.

 133.
New York tried pulling the goalie early, and quickly paid.

 134.

 135.

 136.
WE GOT A GAME 6 ON THURSDAY pic.twitter.com/H0egdaoSyz
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 14, 2024
 137.

 138.
 139.
 140.

 141.
MSG had already mostly emptied out by this point but this really sent fans to the exit. The Canes are halfway to completing the near impossible, and the seed of doubt that had been planted on Saturday is showing signs of growing with the Rangers.

 142.
Andersen had arguably his best game of the series, stopping 20 of 21 shots, and with the extra day off before Game 6, it sure looks like he’s going to be the guy the rest of the series no matter what.

 143.
Raleighwood is going to be hopping on Thursday. Game 6 will be at 7 PM on TNT.

 163.
The Canes look to live another day.

On Saturday night, the Carolina Hurricanes found themselves in an all-too-familiar situation.

 164.
The Canes outshot, outhit, and mostly outplayed New York. Another two-goal lead was erased by the Rangers, and that uneasy sense of dread was felt in the stomach of each Caniac watching at PNC Arena and across the Carolinas during the third period.

 165.
Brady Skjei’s promotion to the quarterback of the first power play unit alleviated that feeling and replaced it with relief. Carolina’s first power play goal of the series came with the team’s first win against New York.

 166.
The Hurricanes lived to see another day, staving off elimination. However, Carolina is back in action for another judgment day and will have to win in a building where they have not won a postseason game.

 167.
The biggest question for the Canes will be the starting goalie. Based on what worked so well at the end of the regular season and Frederik Andersen’s mistake on Alexis Lafreniere’s game-tying goal, one must think Pyotr Kochetkov gets the start tonight.

 168.
Besides the starting goalie, there are no expected lineup changes.

 169.
Noticeable differences in Game 4 were Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stefan Noesen. After Kuznetsov was a healthy scratch in Game 2 and Noesen’s ice time plummeted in the past few games, each player stepped up and were goal-scorers and difference-makers. Carolina’s depth is an asset, and the hope is that head coach Rod Brind’Amour keeps four lines rolling tonight.

 170.
Sebastian Aho continues to be Carolina’s best player. The Hurricanes will need that each night if the team wants to pull off the nearly impossible.

 171.
The Canes were taking the right shots against Igor Shesterkin on Saturday evening and must do more of the same tonight. Each goal on Saturday was high, and each tally had a screen or lateral movement.

 172.
Two of the four goals were in high-danger areas, and all four were taken between the dots.

 173.
Elevate the puck, and do not let Shesterkin get a clean look. And for goodness sake, keep letting Noesen get to the dirty areas. When he does that, Andrei Svechnikov, Jack Drury, and others will follow.

 174.
The Rangers remain in the driver’s seat. Expect more penalties tonight, so the Hurricanes’ penalty kill needs to be at the top of their game.

 175.
Carolina must empty the tank tonight. The team cannot afford to have the second period lulls that have happened too frequently during the playoffs.

 176.
Oh, and another power play goal or two could help.

 177.
Here’s how to check out the action:

 210.
 211.
So that’s what a Power Play Goal looks like.

Well they won’t get swept.

 212.
Brady Skjei scored with 3:11 left on the clock, and the Canes turned choking a 3-1 lead into a beautiful disaster. The goal finally came on the Power Play.

 213.
The script prior to the Power Play Goal was setting up to be similar to previous games. The Canes had a lead, the Rangers fought back for a tie, and the Power Play had once again not been able to generate any offense. Overtime—and a sudden death goal to end the Canes’ season—loomed.

 214.
Skjei changed all that with one shot, as he was able to use a screen in front of Rangers goal Igor Shesterkin. Skjei was on the ice as Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour had looked to swap out the power play unit that had been anything but powerful during the first three games. Skjei took the top spot from Brent Burns, and the change was immediately noticeable.

 219.
 220.
 221.

 222.
PNC Arena erupted in noise at the goal, as a sign of things changing finally emerged.

 223.
Up to that point, arguably the most offensive period of the series gave fans plenty of reason to cheer. The game was barely on when Evgeny Kuznetsov got the puck off a Rangers turnover and flung a shot past Shesterkin.

 224.

 225.

 226.
EVGENY KUZNETSOV

He absolutely wires this shot into the top corner to give the @Canes a 1-0 lead just 1:51 into Game 4. #StanleyCup

: @NHL_On_TNT (truTV) & @SportsonMax ➡️ https://t.co/W9mpYG1lMO
: @Sportsnet or stream on Sportsnet+ ➡️ https://t.co/sEijvXhbA1 pic.twitter.com/ZOnoCjWyLY
— NHL (@NHL) May 11, 2024
 227.

 228.
 229.
 230.

 231.
This happened just 1:33 into the game, and just a mere five minutes later, Stefan Noesen electrified the crowd by streaking off the bench, heading to the net, and taking a feed from Tuevo Teravainen to stuff it past Shesterkin and give the Canes a 2-0 lead. As this replay shows, the whole sequence was started by Jaccob Slavin creating a turnover in the Rangers’ zone, and the Canes able to keep the puck in, changing out players while the Rangers were on their heels.

 232.

 233.

 234.
NOESEN FROM OFF THE BENCH pic.twitter.com/pAarLzn1rP
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 11, 2024
 235.

 236.
 237.
 238.

 239.
It was the first time all playoffs the Rangers trailed by two and it didn’t last long as Will Cuyile was able to take advantage of the Canes pinching down low, leading a breakaway that broke the ice for New York. That didn’t stop the Canes, however, as the top line of Aho, Guentzel, and Svechnikov made their presence know late in the first. The line did work getting it into the zone, and Brent Burns fed the puck down low instead of shooting it on net, that allowed both Guentzel and Aho to set up in front of the net, and Aho burried it to restore the two goal lead.

 240.

 241.

 242.
WHAT A FEED BY GUENTZEL FOR AHO pic.twitter.com/67Qs4KMFnK
— B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 11, 2024
 243.

 244.
 245.
 246.

 247.
It would be last goal for the Canes until Skjei’s game winner.

 248.
Over the course of the last two periods, the Rangers continued to push. While Carolina tried to not play prevent defense for two periods, the Rangers were able to push the play. They trimmed the lead to one with a Barclay Goodrow shot from nearly the blue line in the second period. Then just two minutes into the third, Alexis Lafrenière just shoveled the puck from behind the goal in the direction of Andersen. Andersen had lost control on the ice momentarily, and Lafrenière took advantage to bank the puck off Andersen and into the goal.

 249.
It felt like a back breaker after so much good work done, but it had been the story of the series so far.

 250.
Andersen recovered to make several good saves as the Rangers tried to take advantage of the nervous crowd, and then the Canes pushed back late in the period—drawing the tripping penalty on Ryan Lindgren that lead to the Power Play Goal.

 251.
The goal broke so many trends that had been going against the Canes. It was the first time in 30 playoff games that Igor Shesterkin had given up more than four goals. It was the first Power Play Goal for the Canes in this series, and it was the first time that the Rangers had trailed so late that they had to pull Shesterkin. The Canes also successfully killed the one power play New York had, and it was the first time the special teams had not given up a goal to the Rangers—as the Power Play had given up a shorthanded goal in Game 3.

 252.
The Canes leave Raleigh still in win-or-be-done mode, but to win four you have to win one. Game Five will be in New York City on Monday Night, 7 PM Eastern on ESPN.

 271.
 272.
Facing elimination, the Hurricanes need a win tonight.

It is funny how quickly things can change.

 273.
A couple of weeks ago, people were laughing about the idea of discussing Carolina Head Coach Rod Brind’Amour and his contract. It was a no-brainer that he would return.

 274.
It is a bit more serious of a discussion now.

 275.
Brind’Amour “reportedly” delayed signing an offer from management earlier because he wanted all of his assistants taken care of as well. Sometime after that, also “reportedly”, the offer was taken off the table.

 276.
The Carolina coach is very loyal, but could be loyal to a fault.

 277.
It might seem a bit arrogant to management and ownership to insist on such high demands. The entire coaching staff is far from perfect and as a matter of fact the team and organization might actually benefit from some new perspective and insight to go along with Brind’Amour’s consistent messaging and his, now predictable system.

 278.
Will he eventually loosen his demands about his assistants? What if he is not flexible on his demands? It will be interesting to watch.

 279.
For good or for bad, this franchise is no longer at the point where they are just happy to be in the playoff picture.

 280.
They have an owner who spends at or near the limit of the salary cap and management sacrificed valuable prospects and a draft pick to acquire the top player available at the deadline.

 281.
Many experts in the media as well as the gambling world picked Carolina as the favorites to win the Cup, both at the preseason and just before the playoffs.

 282.
The organization and many fans expect more than a second round exit.

 283.
As Yogi Berra once said, it’s like “deja vu all over again” as the Canes have lost three straight games to the Rangers, in much the same fashion as they lost to the Panthers last season.

 284.
After performing very well during the regular season, the powerplay has been a detriment from their overall game as they have gone 0-15 while also allowing a shorthanded goal against.

 285.
Most of the time, any previous momentum was killed after the impotent man advantage.

 286.
The penalty kill has improved but is not at the same performance level of the regular season.

 287.
That all brings us to the game tonight.

 288.
There is no need to rehash all the details and stats. The team will need to forget the past and not think about the future while just concentrating on one game at a time.

 289.
Frederik Andersen was in the starter’s crease at practice Friday but Brind’Amour would not confirm a starter when asked afterward.

 290.
I would not expect any major changes in the lineup but we will see prior to game time.

 291.
If the Canes lose, their once promising season will come to an end. If they win, it is back to New York for another win or die scenario.

 292.
Game time is 7 P.M.

 293.

 313.
 314.
A season on the brink.

The Carolina Hurricanes had more shots, hits, faceoff wins, and time of possession than the New York Rangers.

 315.
But for the second straight game, the Canes lose in overtime. Carolina is now one loss away from being eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

 316.
Once again, the storyline of this game is the special teams. The Hurricanes went 0-5 on the power play and gave up a shorthanded goal to the Rangers.

 317.
The first period was exactly what you wanted from a team needing a victory. Carolina came out strong on the puck and were rewarded for their pressure on the forecheck with a tip by Jake Guentzel at the 10:14 mark.

 318.
The key to that score was Andrei Svechnikov. He was a bully on the forecheck and did not stop hustling for the entirety of that shift. Svech’s hustle from start to finish was one of the best parts of the entire evening.

 319.
Soon after, the two teams started the extracurriculars. The Hurricanes demonstrated their toughness and did not back down from the pushing and shoving.

 327.
The Canes had to feel good heading into the first intermission with the lead and a definite edge in physicality.

 328.
But in the second period, Carolina started gripping their sticks too tight and overcommitting to make things happen.

 329.
During this period, the Hurricanes stopped driving to the net and moving to high-quality areas on the ice. For the rest of the way, Carolina was more or less content with the quantity of shots rather than quality.

 330.
Despite the change from Brent Burns to Tony DeAngelo on the point with the first power play unit, the man advantage remained imponent for the Hurricanes

 331.

 332.

 333.
The home team needed a bounce, and they got one.

Brady Skjei's shot from the point gets through traffic, and Sebastian Aho gets the initial redirection. #37 is first to the scraps from there and we're all even.

Wow. pic.twitter.com/LA0rRpYgBm
— Walt Ruff (@WaltRuff) May 10, 2024

 336.
 337.

 338.
.

 339.
Carolina’s hesitancy on the power play led to overplaying the puck in moments of desperation. These factors led to the Rangers tying the game at the 8:30 mark on a shorthanded goal by Chris Kreider.

 340.
The momentum shift was evident after the shorthanded game-tying goal, and Carolina seemed content with playing along the boards for most of the rest of the game.

 341.
The Hurricanes were winning the possession battle, but it seemed like the advantage in possession could have led to better scoring chances.

 342.
Tied in the third, each team seemed to feel each other out until New York’s set play out of a whistle working to perfection.

 343.
Vincent Trocheck sacrificed his body on a drop pass in the neutral zone to open up Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere on a rush. Lafreniere buried the one-timer and the Rangers took the lead 6:25 into the third.

 344.
New York started to play back and force Carolina to the outside, even more than during the second period. The focus on preserving the lead was evident as the Rangers tallied just six shots in the third period.

 345.
Later in the third, the Canes started to press and return to the only style of game that can beat the Rangers.

 346.
Finally, with 1:36 left in the game, Carolina gets three guys in the slot to get after a Brady Skjei one-timer from the point, and Svechnikov buries a rebound.

 347.

 348.

 349.

 352.
 353.

 354.
Life for Carolina and life for the Caniacs.

 355.
A Pyotr Kochetkov poke check near the end of regulation forces overtime.

 356.
Just a 1:43 into overtime, the puck takes an odd bounce in the corner and jumps over Dmitry Orlov’s stick onto the blade of Trocheck. His fling towards the net was tipped by Panarin and that was all she wrote.

 357.
The Hurricanes are now just one loss from elimination.
