20.
With a tumultuous year in the books, it’s time to pay the piper

Several days ago, we looked back on the not one, not two, but THREE head coaching changes the Bucks have experienced since May 2023 began and wanted to hear your verdicts on what ended up being quite messy. Not something we would have anticipated upon Griffin’s hiring around this time a year ago. First off, with former head coach Mike Budenholzer now back in the league with his home state team, how are fans feeling about his ouster a year later?

 21.

 23.

 24.
This is a bit of a whopper. Seemed like in the wake of the Bucks’ first-round, five-game defeat at the hands of the Heat last spring, most fans were done with Bud. The prevailing sentiment among both the usual loud voices on Twitter who had been beating the #FireBud drum even right after he won a championship and the fanbase as a whole was to move on. Well, it seems like a wide swath of fans, including likely many who wanted Bud gone a year ago have realized: the grass ain’t always greener. Maybe we were too quick to judge a guy whose two quick post-title playoff exits came in large part due to injuries to Khris Middleton and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Regardless, I think it’s safe to say that Bud was superior to the his two successors. Speaking of...

 27.

 28.
In spite of his 30-13 record and Doc Rivers’—whom it should be noted had a much more difficult schedule and dealt with injuries at the top of the roster—sub-.500 record that followed, most fans still think moving on from Adrian Griffin was the right move. Griff was dealt a tough hand with his job description changing significantly from a team ready to retool around a rookie head coach to one firmly going for it after acquiring Damian Lillard, but he didn’t handle much gracefully in his half-season. He quickly made a high-profile assistant quit, had his vets questioning his schemes and basketball knowledge within four games, then seemingly lost whatever respect he had from the team by the new year. Griffin was very much in over his head, and firing him in an attempt to salvage the season so as not to waste any more time made sense then, as it does now.

 29.
But what about what happened after? We put it this way: should the Bucks have finished out the year with an interim coach and engaged in a full search this summer?

 30.

 31.
 32.

 33.
This is pretty interesting. Back in late January, with the team near the top of the East and very much intending—as they should always be with Giannis in his prime—to compete for a title, hiring Doc Rivers made sense, despite all his warts. While it’s been reported that GM Jon Horst preferred Warriors assistant and former Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson, ownership wanted Rivers. With his experience and the franchise’s urgency to salvage a good campaign out of the Griffin debacle, I see the logic. But they didn’t have to pick Doc. They could have just let it ride with Joe Prunty, just like they did in 2018, and make a permanent hire around now.

 34.
The thing is, much like the last time this happened in 2018, the best candidate available this summer probably was Bud again. And let’s be real: they weren’t gonna go back, nor was Bud likely going to entertain a return. Atkinson could have been the guy, in that case. Seems like <s>Giannis</s> the franchise learned their lesson in trying out a rookie head coach during this window. Atkinson wouldn't have been bad at all (and I would have preferred him myself) but there’s no guarantee he’d be superior to Doc. In any case, Doc Rivers is the head coach of the Bucks for the foreseeable future, and however crappy it looks in hindsight, that’s the reality we all must move forward with.

 55.
Dispute with arena owners clouds future

Since their inception in 2017, the Wisconsin Herd has called Oshkosh, Wisconsin home. However, that might not be the case much longer as the Herd has faced issues with arena ownership. Per the Oshkosh Northwestern, it is reported that the Wisconsin Herd “no longer wants to work” with Fox Valley Pro Basketball Inc., owners of the Oshkosh Arena where the Herd plays their home games, after claims of violation of its current lease.

 56.
The Oshkosh Arena is currently listed for sale, and the owners have filed for bankruptcy. According to the city's finance department, the owners owe more than $619,000, but it is also uncertain what alleged breaches were committed. The Wisconsin Herd currently has a lease agreement that runs to 2026. However, there is an opt-out provision that could release the team from the lease earlier. There have been reports that the Herd would be willing to stay in Oshkosh and work with new arena ownership, but the sale will likely take some time because the deal would be contingent on Fox Valley Pro Basketball Inc. to settle its tax situation with the city. The Herd has until August to determine their home court arrangements for the 2024–25 NBA G-League season, as the schedule is released in early September.

 57.
There are ramifications with the Herd leaving Oshkosh. If the Herd were to opt out of Oshkosh this upcoming season, it would cause a quick scramble to find a new home. Should the Herd be unable to do that, there would be the possibility they do not suit up this season. The options could be the other cities that initially bid for the Herd. Those cities were La Crosse, Racine, Sheboygan, and Grand Chute. How the Milwaukee Bucks approach the situation is interesting as well. They could choose one of those cities or move them somewhere outside of Wisconsin, but it seems more likely that the Herd would stay in Wisconsin. The City of Oshkosh would see an economic hit if the Herd were to leave; Oshkosh Chamber CEO Rob Kleman said the Herd home games generate about $100,000 of financial impact. The arena would still have tenants as the Wisconsin Glo, part of the Global Women’s Basketball Association, plays in the Oshkosh Arena as well.

 58.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as we learn more and decisions happen.

 70.
Hanif Abdurraqib’s “There’s Always This Year” Book Launch and Reflection

 71.

 72.
 73.

 74.
 75.

 76.
 77.
On Monday, March 25th (waves hand at the busy-ness of life), Hanif Abdurraqib launched the tour of his latest book, There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension. At the King Arts Complex on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio, Abdurraqib read excerpts from the book, engaged in a wide-ranging conversation with a friend/mentor, and answered (antlered?) questions from a packed house.

 78.
Hanif—quoting Wiki here—is a “poet, essayist, and cultural critic.” Accordingly, he writes poems, essays, and cultural criticism. For his work, he has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Carnegie Medal, and a National Book Award longlist. Not too shabby.

 79.
Importantly for us, basketball is often on the margins of his work and sometimes even takes center stage. Besides his new book, you can check out his Notes on Hoops series at The Paris Review (s/o Alex). You can also check out him out on Twitter (X?), where he is an absolute firehose of NBA zingers.

 80.
As the title suggests, There’s Always This Year is about basketball while encompassing multitudes, linking it to nearly every facet of life. The book itself is structured into quarters, each of which feature a timeout and a ticking clock, and it is augmented by a pregame, intermissions, and a postgame scouting report.

 81.
Abdurraqib elaborated on his love of the game in the conversation and the Q&A. He spoke beautifully of the sliver of space in a perfect pick and roll and the joyous feeling of a good shot. He enjoys the feeling of putting all of his eggs into a basket with low stakes, with the hope that—thanks to the unpredictability of sports—belief can become reality. He contrasted the uninhabitable hellscape of reality with the excitement of the NBA, especially as a T-Wolves fan. (Raised as a rebel in a household of Knicks fans, he gravitated toward the T-Wolves when they joined the league and featured KG. His reasoning: “new team + young star = years of success.” It seems like that has finally borne out!)

 82.
But Hanif being Hanif, the discussion didn’t stick to basketball. An interesting parallel emerged between being a fan of a team and living in a place. We become attached to teams and places, and this attachment engenders a unique combination of both love and hate: love, because we live it, and hate, because we want it to be better. The book can rightly be described as a love letter to Columbus, but it also contains a lengthy screed against everything that he considers wrong with the city. It also considers the overlap between teams and places: for him, the jubilation of the Cavs winning in 2016—even as a T-Wolves fan—and what it meant for his place.

 83.
This discussion prompted a comparison of my own time in Columbus with my Bucks fandom. I live in Columbus, but I came here for school, rendering my time here finite. Yet a semblance of attachment has still arisen. I’ve seen Hanif at my favorite coffee shops and even garbled to him that I enjoyed his NBA-related tweets. The event was hosted by Two Dollar Radio, a local independent publisher; its owner, who introduced Hanif, runs at the same park as I do, and we talk frequently about the highs (sunbathing turtles) and lows (path closure due to highway construction) of running there. I even knew the first two people who asked questions in the Q&A: a former employee at Two Dollar with whom I keep in touch and someone from my weekly tennis group.

 84.
So in many ways, I feel connected to the city—love might be too strong of a word, but it’s not far off. In contrast, I don’t harbor much hate for Columbus. Hate seems to require a degree of familiarity or knowledge in order to justify itself, but so does love. Perhaps the difference is that it is harder to hate what is only temporary. Ideally, hatred would be channeled into positive change—but if I won’t be around to experience said change, and may not even be around to enact it, why bother? As a result, I don’t think I’m truly attached to Columbus: close to the realm of love, but far from the buy-in required for hate.

 85.
My Bucks fandom is more permanent, as it likely is for many of us here at Brew Hoop. I am fully attached to the Bucks. As a result, I am intimately familiar with their strengths and weaknesses, and I applaud the former while I bemoan the latter.

 86.
This combination of love and hate has felt particularly acute this year. Unlike the Bud years, which generally featured more applause than bemoaning, there has been a steady drumbeat of negativity, whether on Brew Hoop, Bucks Twitter, or even the vaunted Brew Hoop writers’ group chat (and for good reason!) Yet the good has persisted, thanks largely to the reliable greatness of Giannis... at least until the playoffs. It’s naive to focus on the good and regressive to focus on the bad. After this season especially, the message that true attachment comprises both love and hate—not just the latter—is vital.

 87.
I’ve been thinking a lot about attachment to both teams and places as I gear up to move at the end of this month (I’ll be moving to an earlier timezone, with the express goal of expanding my game coverage beyond Sunday matinees against the Magic). Fandom allows us to ascend beyond a physical place to experience attachment to a team. But it also grounds us to a place—Milwaukee—where we may or may not live, and it binds us in a virtual place—Brew Hoop—even if it does not physically exist. People across these places are united in knowing that, for the Bucks and any other team, there’s always this year. Just not this year...

 107.
The podcast crew puts a bow on the 2023-2024 season

Having pulled out all the stops to rally after the Milwaukee Bucks’s game five victory (including calls from Kyle in Vegas and a new intro produced by Adam, no less), there just wasn’t enough heart to do an autopsy on the season after the 98-120 trouncing to end the season.

 108.
But now we’re back! Kyle, Adam, and I got together last night to sift through the debris of the season to better understand what we learned along the way. Was the Pacers series just one final condemnation of a now-forgettable roster? Has the ground shifted too much under the Bucks feet as to make serious contention more of a thing of chance rather than something the team controls? Was the instability beginning last summer the new norm, or can the organization right the ship?

 168.
Those topping the roster (height-wise) and front office are popular names in the rumor mill

Last week, we posed three pressing questions to you about the Bucks, ones whose answers are very crucial to next season’s team. The first two are oft-discussed trade pieces who make up 2/3rds of Milwaukee’s frontcourt rotation, but increasingly may not be in the team’s future plans. The man who makes those decisions will be staying put for now, but the Pistons came barking up Jon Horst’s tree and might not be the last franchise in search of a GM to do so. Starting with the players...

 169.

 170.
 171.

 172.
This doesn’t surprise me too much. By many accounts, Lopez had a very good season, if not quite to the DPOY-caliber standards of a year prior. There were his doubters who thought he was washed or were critical of his rim protection, but that was a superficial argument: he led the league in shots contested by a country mile and finished third in blocks. He also is coming off a very good series offensively with 17.7 PPG on .587/.435/.533 shooting (the FT% is colored a bit by one 0/4 game, far beneath his 82.1% regular season average and 79.6% career rate).

 173.
Still, there’s a good case to be made for selling high—well, as high as one’s value can be at 36—on Lopez since his contract is expiring next summer. Trading him would obviously create a massive hole in the frontcourt and severely hamstring Milwaukee’s interior defense, so those would need to be addressed somehow, perhaps in a different move. However, splitting up his $23m salary he’s due next year into multiple contracts—especially ones with Bird rights—could benefit the Bucks’ flexibility moving forward. After all, if he stays with the team through next summer, his salary slot could only be used on him.

 174.
Moving onto another frontcourt option whose popularity endures...

 175.

 176.
 177.

 178.
This one surprises me a little bit. On the one hand, Portis is a longtime fan favorite who has given the Bucks a lot of offensive production in the last four seasons, often when they needed it most as they dealt with injuries to Lopez or Giannis. On the other, he arguably hurt the team more than he helped this postseason with his lack of defense, questionable shot selection (plus just 25% from deep), and on-court antics that netted him a suspension, plus a few techs. He also is increasingly unreliable in the playoffs (when was the last time he had a good series? The 2021 Finals? The 2021 ECF?) against top opponents and saw his minutes cut significantly in series losses to Miami in 2023 and Boston in 2022. Had Giannis been healthy for the Pacers series, the same thing might have happened.

 179.
Portis is under contract for about $12.6m in 2024–25 and has a player option next summer worth $13.4m. Declining that would allow him to test the open market again at 30 for what probably would be his last big-ish payday and multiyear deal. Given his production the last few years, I’d bet on him opting out at this point, so this year is kind of a walk year for him. Like Lopez above, Portis’ salary slot could only be used on him once his contract expires, so now might be the time to move on and split his money up, ideally between guys with more control. If they remain over the second apron as projected, trading him would allow the Bucks to take back his 24–25 salary at most, so combining him with another guy (Pat Connaughton?) might be the best option.

 180.
So while I know Portis remains a beloved figure in Milwaukee, I have a feeling that 42% of the fanbase is a number that grew between the start of the playoffs and today. With how vociferous his detractors were, I thought it would be higher, but this is another example of criticism not necessarily speaking for a majority just because it’s loud. However, the following isn’t...

 181.

 182.
 183.

 184.
It’s a moot point after it was reported this weekend that the Bucks will not allow the Pistons to interview Horst for their new president of basketball operations position. But the sentiment here is pretty strong: a lot fans want the team to move on. Anyone who has read my writing over the past couple of seasons knows that I shake my head at this. I get that fans are frustrated with back-to-back first-round exits, but as most fans recognize, injuries are the bigger culprit here than roster construction.

 185.
But imagine that series with Jrue Holiday—who scored 7.8 PPG on 35% shooting in the first round against Miami—instead of Damian Lillard, even with him missing two games. Do the Bucks even get it to Game 6? It wasn’t as if Tyrese Haliburton (16.0 PPG on .435/.296/.857 shooting) was torching them to the extent that Holiday’s defense would have swung the series. That franchise-altering trade has always been the right move. As my colleague Riley put it yesterday:

 186.

Weaknesses in marginal roster talent evaluation, draft competency, and a tendency to have maybe held onto rotation pieces a half season or two too long ensure Horst hasn’t yet made the jump to the very best execs, but that’s a tough group to break into.

 187.
While I agree that he hasn’t done well around the margins in the years after the title and maybe he’s held onto one or two guys too long (I’ll also add that he had a couple missteps at the deadline in 2022 and 2023), he’s only made three first-round picks in his Bucks tenure: one whiff (D.J. Wilson), one hit (Donte DiVincenzo), one who the jury is close to a verdict on (MarJon Beauchamp) but is still out, and has had some solid second-round picks.

 188.
The point I’ve always made, though, is that the impact of his misses does not outweigh the impact of his hits: signing Lopez and Portis with the bi-annual exception, extending both of them on team-friendly deals, the Holiday trade, the Dame trade, Giannis’ two extensions. That’s why I actually do think that Horst is one of the league’s very best executives. Other names you’d put in that upper echelon either have the benefit of a glamorous market (Pat Riley), inherited more superstars than Horst did (Brad Stevens), or history (R.C. Buford and Riley). To that end, I know that people around the league have a great deal of respect for Horst given that he was able to create a consistent title contender in a NBA market where it’s very difficult to win.

 189.
I think Bucks fans take that for granted, but also the fact that he signed Giannis to not one, but two extensions. Some say these are meaningless these days since players extend now and ask for trades later, but look at where those arguments are coming from a lot of the time: national voices that seem to want Giannis out of Milwaukee. Is that the kind of point Bucks fans should be making? Seems self-defeating.

 210.
Milwaukee Bucks links for your perusal on May 13th, 2024

It is a tricky game the Milwaukee Bucks play this offseason — should he stay or should he be allowed to consider going?

 211.
(Belated author’s note: He will not be allowed to consider going)

 212.

The Pistons were denied permission to interview Milwaukee’s Jon Horst last week, league and team sources tell The Athletic. It is possible that the Bucks were posturing to get assets from Detroit in order to take Horst, who signed a multi-year deal with Milwaukee in 2021. However, the Pistons have decided to move on to other candidates.

 213.
He in this case is, of course, general manager Jon Horst. While not one of the guys who is out on the floor doing the playing, whether an organization functions in a more-or-less coherent fashion from top to bottom falls on the GM. Tone-setter, talent evaluator, coordinator between ownership, coaching staff, and playing roster; they are meant to do it all.

 214.
Horst has been doing it all since he took up the last of the reins when firing Jason Kidd back in 2018. Since, he’s overseen two contract extensions for Giannis Antetokounmpo, three head coaches, the 2021 title (of course), and a handful of large trades which have altered the trajectory of the team when things looked dangerously stale. Like a number of GMs, Horst’s overall record tends towards slightly above average if winning percentage and stability are the primary units of measure. Weaknesses in marginal roster talent evaluation, draft competency, and a tendency to have maybe held onto rotation pieces a half season or two too long ensure Horst hasn’t yet made the jump to the very best execs, but that’s a tough group to break into.

 215.
Now, with the team having crashed out of two consecutive playoffs before ever getting started, the question of Horst’s future in the team could reasonably be seen as the most important of the offseason. Reportedly (more below), the Detroit Pistons went from rumor mill interest in Horst as a President of Basketball Operations to actually lodging a request to interview Horst — and then being told off. Typically, teams do not deny their employees permission to interview for a better role elsewhere in the league, but for the moment it seems the Bucks have little interest in losing Horst even if he is personally interested in that Pistons job.

 216.
And so we return to the trick: If your GM isn’t fully invested in his job with you, are you hamstringing your ability to construct the strongest possible team? If you stonewall for a few weeks only to cave to his desires eventually, how much of a jam are you putting yourself in vis-a-vis things like the draft, free agency, the trade market, etc.? Do you have a true succession plan in place? One that doesn’t just default to Doc Rivers running everything?

 217.
In years past I’d have said the Bucks were truly prepared for every eventuality. Then the 2023-2024 season happened and I’m feeling less sure than I have in awhile. They’re trying to juggle a lot at once and the key guy in that exercise has started to get a little buzz elsewhere around the league, even if nothing will be acted upon right now. If ownership doesn’t have a plan A, B, C, and D ready to go at a moment’s notice, it’d be wise for them to start putting those together on the off chance they’re needed. Unlike the past six or so years, things feel as up for grabs as they ever have with the Bucks. That’s exciting and frightening in equal measure.

 218.
Let’s roundup!

 219.

 220.
Milwaukee Bucks Links

 222. Pistons denied permission to talk to Bucks GM Jon Horst for vacant prez role (Detroit Bad Boys) & Bucks Deny Pistons Permission To Interview Jon Horst (Hoops Rumors)
 223.

 224.
Gery Woelfel. That’s a name I haven’t heard in many years now. However, his scoop as presented in the DBB piece was apparently corroborated by one Marc Stein, so we aren’t likely to be living in Never-Never Land on this one.

 225.
I guess the question is, are the Pistons willing to pay for all of Milwaukee’s luxury tax payments for the life of what would’ve been Horst’s deal in order to get the guy as POBO? If yes and I’m a gazillionaire owner of the Bucks, I’m sitting down to think about that offer.

 226.

 227. The Good, the Bad, and the Doc: Tales From Doc Rivers’s 40 Years in and Around the NBA (The Ringer)
 228.

 229.
Very long, very good, and very interesting sort of oral history of Doc’s time within the league both as a player and more extensively as a coach. The through line? He knows what he’s doing when it comes to so many of the minute facets of being an NBA coach and is very capable of keeping more people onside than off in order to get something out of his rosters. Whether he ever puts it all together again? Well, for our sakes let’s hope he does.

 230.

 231. 2024 NBA Draft Order: Picks 1-58 (NBA.com)
 232.

 233.
After the Atlanta Hawks rose up out of the East’s 10th seed to... winning the whole damn lottery (shoutout to my colleague Michael who speculated that Adam Silver is conniving to keep Trae Young in ATL lol), we now have the complete draft order set. Picks 23 and 33 are in Milwaukee’s grasp, although in a weaker draft (per the expert consensus), it’ll be fascinating to see what value those picks have on the trade market — or perhaps even as leverage to move up if another team up the picking order isn’t in love with the prospects in its range.

 234.
Mock Draft Prospect of the Week

 235.
Kel’el Ware - Sophomore, Indiana - 7’0”, 210 pounds, 20 years old, Center

 236.
Between this week’s prospect pick and last (Yves Missi) can you tell which end of the roster I think the Bucks should be targeting?

 237.
Ware is another seven-footer considered to possibly be in the mix from the mid-first round onwards having finished a season in Indiana that saw his production take a huge leap from his freshman year in Oregon. Playing in 30 games (all starts), he averaged 32.2 minutes, 15.9 points (.586/.425/.634), 9.9 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks for a middle-of-the-pack Hoosiers team under former NBA coach Mike Woodson. Watch the highlights and the offensive possibilities get the mouth watering:

 239.
The trouble as I see it is on the defensive end. At that height and weighing only 210 pounds I’ve a feeling he’ll struggle against stronger NBA competition and it is also pretty obvious that he relies heavily on his length to bail him out (effectively!) rather than great positioning or the ability to stand up even moderately strong guards in the paint. Whether that is a function of laziness, reticence to engage in the physical aspects of the game, or just bad habits reinforced during a competitive lifetime where he has been far and away the largest guy on the floor is TBD.

 240.
What’s worse for the Ware Fanatics among us: A team like the New Orleans Pelicans have multiple bites at the mid-to-late first apple before the Bucks, and they look like they’ll be in the market for big men as well. There are a couple of guys in that range who could fit the bill in NO, but I wouldn’t become too attached to any one big prospect on the chance they’re off the board just before Milwaukee picks.

I’ll be looking to put together a piece to run this week that breaks the season just concluded down into chunks to better understand the flow of the year with its ups and downs, and I’m happy to report Deer Diaries should be back this week as well.

 444.
Report: Doc Rivers Trims Coaching Staff

 451.
 452.
Josh Oppenheimer, Sidney Dobner, and DJ Bakker are out

After presiding over what surely had to be one of the biggest coaching staffs in the league last season (11 deep at one point!), Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers has begun whittling his support group down:

 453.

 454.

 455.
As head coach Doc Rivers continues to shape his coaching staff in Milwaukee, the Bucks have let go of three assistant coaches.

At @TheAthletic: https://t.co/0qjVraUHBM
— Eric Nehm (@eric_nehm) May 10, 2024
 456.

 457.
 458.
 459.

 460.
Those three coaches are Josh Oppenheimer, Sidney Dobner, and DJ Bakker. Oppenheimer is likely the most interesting departure given his stature as something akin to a Giannis Antetokounmpo whisperer having first had a stint as a coach with the Bucks during the Jason Kidd era. He had built up a close working relationship with Antetokounmpo over the years, serving in previous offseasons as a sort of proxy for the team during Giannis’s summers away.

 461.
That proxy role would eventually land him a spot as an honest-to-goodness assistant coach with Greece’s national federation in 2022 leading up to the Eurobasket competition of that summer. The implications of his departure are to be determined, but interesting to note nonetheless.

 462.
Dobner was the other Mike Budenholzer era holdover having worked her way up from a video assistant to the first female assistant coach in franchise history before the 2022-2023 season. She’d been with Milwaukee since 2018 and so would’ve been one of the longer tenured employees left alongside Oppenheimer and assistant coach Vin Baker.

 463.
DJ Bakker was hired on as part of Adrian Griffin’s initial staff and so his departure, and potentially the departure of the remaining Griff remnants — Joe Prunty, Patrick Mutombo, Trevor Gleeson, and Vin Baker — somewhat expected.

 464.
It is worth noting, as well, that Budenholzer’s recent hiring by the Phoenix Suns means he will be in the process of assembling a coaching staff of his own. Don’t be surprised if some names we’re familiar with in Milwaukee start popping up in Arizona soon.
