20.
Former Arizona point guard Helena Pueyo got to experience the excitement of having her name called in the WNBA draft. She went to camp with the Connecticut Sun. Making a WNBA team is one of the most difficult thing to do in American sports, though. Like so many before her, Pueyo won’t make it to the regular season.

 21.
The Connecticut Sun announced that they waived Pueyo and fellow rookie Taiyanna Jackson on Friday morning.

 29.
Pueyo played just three minutes in the Sun’s preseason loss to the New York Liberty on Thursday evening. She went 0-for-1 from the floor.

 30.
The Sun had 15 players on their roster before waiving Pueyo and Jackson. They must cut at least one more player to get to the 12-player maximum before opening day. Most teams carry just 11 players due to the salary cap.

 31.
Pueyo appeared to be prepared for this. Earlier this week, she shared social media posts announcing that she had signed with Spanish team Casademont Zaragoza for the 2024-25 season.

 73.
 74.
STANFORD, CALIF.— There were two keys to Arizona defeating Washington in their first game at the Pac-12 Softball Tournament. Both were on the offensive side of play. The Wildcats executed both perfectly in a dominant 11-3 run-rule victory over the Huskies.

 75.
When the Wildcats played the Huskies in Tucson, they allowed UW righty Ruby Meylan to determine the zone. They chased her pitches. They couldn’t do that at Stanford’s Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium if they hoped to be successful.

 76.
They didn’t chase her pitches, but they did chase Meylan from the game in the second inning on the way to a six-inning victory over the Huskies.

 77.

 78.

 79.
First time UW has been run-ruled this season. Last time was 4/16/23 at Oregon State
— Softball-Obsess(Ed) Strong (@ByEdStrong) May 10, 2024
 80.

 81.
 82.
 83.

 84.
The other key to the game was the reason the ‘Cats got to Meylan. The middle of the order came through. All of Arizona’s hitters had been to the plate two batters into the second inning. UA was up 4-0 after two with hits and RBIs from Carlie Scupin, Allie Skaggs, and Olivia DiNardo.

 85.
“I think we were all just excited to come out,” Scupin said. “We remember our series against Washington, so I think we kind of played with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder. But I mean, honestly, not even just the middle of lineup. It was one through nine all night, so it was great.”

 86.

 87.
Freshman pitcher Sidne Peters was able to keep the Wildcats off the board in the third, but they eventually got to her, too.

 88.
“Peters came in and threw some dirty stuff, and they just stayed consistent and worked at it and took some stuff to get to better quality at-bats,” Arizona head coach Caitlin Lowe said.

 89.
In the sixth, it was time for Lindsay Lopez to try her hand against the Wildcats. Arizona put runs on the board every inning except the third and scored at least two runs in four of the six innings played.

 90.
It wasn’t all about the hitting, though. The Wildcat pitchers had a strong collective effort using the all-hands-on-board approach in the circle that Lowe mentioned before the team left Tucson.

 91.
Miranda Stoddard got the start. She was strong for the two innings she pitched. She gave up just two hits and one walk. The Huskies couldn’t push a run across against her.

 92.
Brooke Mannon surrendered two runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of work. She struck out two in the third inning but was unable to get an out in the fourth before giving up a two-run home run. It didn’t stop her from getting the win, though. Mannon improved to 6-3 on the year.

 93.
Aissa Silva relieved Mannon after the two runs scored in the bottom of the fourth. She immediately gave up a home run, pulling UW within two runs of Arizona.

 94.
That was the extent of the damage, though. Silva gave up one run on two hits and two walks to pick up the three-inning save.

 95.
It was a complete turnaround from the way the Wildcats looked when they faced UW earlier in the season. The Huskies run-ruled Arizona twice before losing the final game of the series 2-0. UA couldn’t muster a lot against Meylan either time they faced her, although they did get their win in a game she pitched.

 96.
“We prepared all week,” Scupin said. “We knew we were gonna get Ruby. So I think it’s that and being prepared and looking at our at-bats from last time in the series against them. But like flipside, just trusting our abilities and all of that. I think we’re a completely different team now than when we played them. So, we knew what we wanted to do today. We did that.”

 97.
What they did was impose their will at every turn and pick each other up when they needed to. When their pitchers gave up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, the offense went out and got two of them back in the top of the fifth.

 98.
Those two runs came on a home run by DiNardo, who went 3-for-4 and tied her career high with five RBI. Two of her hits went for extra bases.

 99.
It was the second straight year DiNardo hit one out of Stanford’s stadium. The native of San Mateo, just a few miles up the road from Palo Alto, seemed to be in her element.

 100.
“I do like coming home,” DiNardo said. “It’s always nice to be home with my family and see my dogs and stuff like that, but it’s different. I do like playing in Tucson in front of those fans.”

 101.
Scupin was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double. Skaggs went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. That made the three, four, and five hitters 7-for-12 with three doubles, a home run, and eight RBI on the day.

 102.
“I think we all really trusted ourselves today and just kind of took pitch by pitch and not trying to force anything to happen,” DiNardo said. “It was like we’re good enough the way we are without having to change the game at all.”

 103.
The top and the bottom of the order continued to produce, as well. Seven of Arizona’s hitters got at least one hit. Even those who didn’t, like catcher Emily Schepp, made good contact. Schepp almost hit one out, but the 205-foot left-field fence was just a few inches too far and too high.

 104.
Was it the most complete effort of the season for the Wildcats?

 105.
“That’s exactly what I said first to them,” Lowe said. “I thought all the way around. The pitching was handing the ball to the next person and doing their job. I was thrilled with our pitching performance tonight as well as our defense. Just really excited about the way they came out and stayed consistent throughout every inning.”

 106.
Now they get a chance to get revenge against another team they felt they should have played better against. Arizona will face UCLA in the semifinals. The last time the two teams faced each other, the Wildcats were going into the bottom of the sixth with a 7-0 lead before the Bruins came back to win 11-7. It was the difference between winning their series 2-1 and losing it 1-2.

 107.
This time it’s for a spot in the finals of the last Pac-12 Softball Tournament.

 128.
She’s been an All-American, a Gold Glove second baseman, a Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, and an All-Pac-12 first team softball player, but perhaps the most impressive thing about Arizona second baseman Allie Skaggs is that she’s a true student-athlete in both the old-fashioned sense and in the modern NIL era. The Pac-12 recognized that by naming Skaggs the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

 129.
Skaggs is majoring in journalism with an eye toward working in video and social media. She will miss her graduation ceremony while playing in the Pac-12 Softball Tournament, but head coach Caitlin Lowe said that the seniors got to celebrate their graduation at the CATSYS ceremony that was held last week.

 130.
Skaggs will graduate with a 3.91 GPA. She was named an NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete and CSC Academic All-District last year. She is also a three-time Pac-12 Spring Honor Roll recipient.

 131.
On the field, Arizona was named All-Pac-12 first team this year for the second straight season. She has been an All-Pac-12 honoree three times.

 132.
She became the third Arizona softball player to win the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year award, joining Kelsey Rodriguez in 2014 and Jessie Harper in 2021.

 153.
She may not have been voted conference freshman of the year by Pac-12 coaches, but the national coaches think Arizona centerfielder Regan Shockey is one of the top 10 freshmen in the country. Shockey was named to the list of 10 finalists for the Tucci/NFCA Freshman of the Year on Wednesday.

 161.
Shockey was named to the All-Pac-12 first team, the All-Defensive team, and the All-Freshman team on Tuesday. She lost out on Pac-12 Freshman of the Year to UCLA pitcher Kaitlyn Terry.

 162.
Shockey is the only Pac-12 freshman to make the list of 10 finalists. She was also the only Pac-12 freshman to make the list of the top 25 released on Apr. 25.

 163.
Shockey led the league with four Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors. Her .420 batting average leads the Wildcats and was third among all Division I freshmen at the end of the regular season. It ranks 33rd among DI players of all classes. She also leads UA with 74 hits, ranking second among DI freshmen and 13th overall.

 164.
On defense, Shockey leads the Wildcats’ outfield with 11 assists and has started two double plays from centerfield.

 184.
Arizona Athletics

 185.

 186.
 187.
When the Pac-12 released its preseason coaches poll in early February, you had to scroll pretty far down to find Arizona in ninth place. Utah, the Wildcats’ opponent this weekend, was picked 10th.

 188.
Those teams are in first and second place, respectively, in the Pac-12 with two weekends left in the regular season.

 189.
“Any coach will tell you, it really doesn’t mean a whole lot,” UA coach Chip Hale said this week of the preseason poll. “Anything that you do on preseason rankings, you either take too much credit for what the team did last year, or you’re just going on who’s got guys coming back.”

 190.

 191.
Arizona (30-17, 17-7 Pac-12) goes into the penultimate weekend of conference play with a 2-game lead on Utah (30-16, 15-9). Right behind them are Oregon State (36-12, 14-9) and Oregon (32-15, 14-10), and OSU comes to Tucson next weekend.

 192.
The Wildcats have won four in a row—most recently beating ASU 5-3 in Phoenix on Tuesday—since a 3-game skid. Overall, they’ve won 20 of 24 since starting 10-13.

 193.
A lot of things have factored into Arizona’s performance the last six weeks. The pitching staff has the best ERA in Pac-12 play (3.40) and leads the nation in both strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.63) and walks per nine innings (2.5). Mason White is tied with Pac-12 Player of the Year frontrunner Travis Bazzana of Oregon State for the conference lead in RBI (59), and the overall batting order has massively cut down on strikeouts after being addicted to whiffing early in the season.

 194.
Speaking of that order, the likely starting nine this weekend includes a pair of young players who were not expected to be regular contributors this season. True freshman Andrew Cain is hitting .343 in Pac-12 play and leads the team in average exit velocity, while redshirt freshman TJ Adams has more than filled in admirably in left field in the absence of Easton Breyfogle.

 195.
“TJ has been probably the biggest surprise for us because losing Easton was a huge deal,” Hale said. “His speed, his defense, everything that he was doing for us when he got sick and then coming back and finally getting the bat going again and them pulling the hamstring. TJ has filled in unbelievably and added another facet to our team with the right-handed power.”

 196.
Adams, from Mesa, hit his first college home run in the win at ASU. He had a large cheering section at the game, the byproduct of his mother getting her Master’s degree that morning.

 197.
“It was a dream come true,” said Adams, who is 10 for 21 in the past six games.

 198.
A backlog of outfielders caused Adams to redshirt in 2023, which gave him extra time to fix what hitting coach Toby DeMello called a “loopy” swing.

 199.
“We call it the barrel turn and his barrel would kind of dump a little bit,” DeMello said. “We wanted him to just be a little more direct, where he wouldn’t struggle with the high fastball and really shorten his lengthen zone. It got a little too uphill.”

 200.
Though a smaller sample size, Adams’ 14.9 percent strikeout rate is better than five other current starters and his BABIP (batting average on balls in play) of .424 is second-best among the regulars.

 201.
“It was just being patient, wait for my time and just once you get it, just take advantage of it,” Adams said.

 202.
Scouting the Utes

 203.
Utah is arguably a bigger surprise than Arizona because the Utes were 9-20-1 in Pac-12 play last season. But the Utes are extremely veteran, with all but one regular in the lineup a junior or senior, and that group has combined for a conference-best 81 stolen bases on 105 attempts.

 204.
Arizona has allowed 31 steals in 45 tries.

 205.
“I think we’ve done a good job of throwing guys out,” Hale said. “We have to keep (runners) close (at first base). It’s one of our points of emphasis this week. That is a big part of their game. Veteran guys who know what they’re doing on the bases, so we need to shut that down.”

 206.
The Utes also have one of the top contenders for Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year in senior left-hander Bryson Van Sickle. He is 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA, 2.68 in eight conference starts, and eight of closer Micah Ashman’s 11 saves have come in league play.

 207.
An off series format

 208.
Because it shares Smith’s Ballpark with the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees, Utah’s home games get second billing as far as start times. As a result, the opener and middle game will be at 10 a.m. PT (11 a.m. in Salt Lake City) in order for the facility to be turned over to the Bees for night games.

 209.
But Sunday’s finale will be at 6 p.m. PT, as the Bees will play in the afternoon, meaning more than 24 hours between games.

 210.
Hale said the early starts will cause Arizona to invert its preparation, lifting Friday and Saturday evening rather than the morning of games.

 211.
“The Saturday day to the Sunday night, that’s completely different,” he said. “I feel like we’re playing Sunday Night Baseball in the Major Leagues. So maybe we’re getting some guys ready for the future.”

 212.
Latest NCAA projections

 213.
Both D1Baseball and Baseball America have Arizona projected as the No. 2 seed in a regional hosted by UC-Santa Barbara, which is projected to be the No. 15 and No. 16 national seeds, respectively.

 214.
With an RPI of 34, the Wildcats’ chances to host a regional seem slim. But their remaining six regular season games can all provide significant boosts to their resume, with the three at Utah (No. 70) considered Quad 2 games and the final series with Oregon State (No. 15) in the Quad 1 category.

 215.

 235.
Entering the second weekend of May last year, Arizona’s 2023-24 roster was barely halfway complete. Alabama transfer Jaden Bradley had committed, and KJ Lewis had been signed since the previous November, but otherwise all the many newcomers were still yet to be revealed.

 236.
Compared to a year ago, the 2024-25 roster is in great shape and figures to only get better. The Wildcats signed three 4- and 5-star prospects in the fall, and in the past two weeks have gotten commitments from a trio of transfers, most recently former Campbell wing Anthony Dell’Orso.

 237.
“We feel really good about the foundation we have, and then the pieces we’ve been able to add,” UA coach Tommy Lloyd said Tuesday at the ‘Wildcat Welcome Tour’ event in Tucson. “We have generally felt like we performed pretty well this time of year and we feel like we’re on track to do that again right now. We expect to be at the same level we’ve been playing in the past couple of years.”

 238.
All that’s left to be sorted out is if any of the three UA players from last season’s team who are testing the NBA Draft waters opt to come back, a decision that must be made by May 29.

 239.
Bradley, Lewis and fellow guard Caleb Love all put their names into the draft but left open the possibility to return to Arizona. It’s what Pelle Larsson did a year ago before coming back, and now he and Keshad Johnson are in the draft for good this time around.

 240.
Read between the lines and it seems very likely at least two of the three will be in a UA uniform this winter. Bradley was not invited to either the NBA Draft combine or the G League Elite camp, which is being held this weekend in Chicago, while Lewis was extended an invite but declined.

 241.
Love is expected to participate in the camp, which provides the opportunity for some players to get invited to the combine next week in Chicago. This is his second time going through the draft process, having tested the waters last spring before joining Arizona in late May, and the Pac-12 Player of the Year is considered 50-50 between withdrawing and staying in the draft.

 242.
That all may seem stressful from an outside standpoint, but Lloyd referred to the whole process as “anticlimactic” because he has kept in close contact with all three players.

 243.
“You have an open line of communication going into the process,” he said. “You know what they’re looking for. Generally there’s been feedback already. And there’s conversations ongoing, between whether it’s us, to them and their family, the NBA teams to their agents or them. There’s a lot of information being exchanged. We’re supportive of our guys. And hopefully, if coming back is the best option for them, we want them to be excited about it. We don’t want them to come back here feeling like this isn’t where they want to be. We feel really good about our guys that are testing, and excited about their futures, and hopeful if things don’t work out for them at that level that coming back here is an option they’re excited about.”

 244.
If all three return, Arizona will have filled 12 of its 13 available scholarships for 2024-25. The last could go to 5-star Class of 2025 guard Joson Sanon, who committed in March and reportedly is considering reclassifying to 2024.

 245.
Sanon recently showed out at the Adidas 3SSB event, averaging 33.3 points in three games while making 15 of 31 3-point attempts.

 282.
Arizona women’s golf’s season came to an end Wednesday as the Wildcats fell two strokes short of reaching the NCAA Championships.

 283.
Arizona placed sixth at the NCAA Las Vegas Regional, finishing one spot behind the cut off to qualify for NCAA Championships. This is only the third time in the last decade that Arizona won’t advance to NCAA Championships.

 284.
Arizona entered the third and final round of the regional in seventh place, needing to move up in the top five to advance.

 285.
The Wildcats jockeyed for the fifth spot with UCLA and Florida State before ultimately falling short. Arizona shot a 16-over par for the regional.

 286.
“It’s always tough to have your season come to an end earlier than you want it to, but I am incredibly proud of these young women,” said head coach Laura Ianello.

 287.
Freshman Charlotte Back led Arizona by shooting even across three rounds to finish in a tie for 8th place.

 288.
Arizona should return the core of its starters next season, including Back, Julia Misemer, Carolina Melgrati and Nana Wongthanavimok.

 289.
Senior Gile Bite Starkute departs the program after five seasons.

 308.
 309.
With the way the series between the two teams went earlier this season, No. 12 Washington would seem to have a big advantage heading into Thursday’s Pac-12 Softball Tournament quarterfinal matchup against No. 18 Arizona. It’s one reason the possibility of seeing No. 24 Oregon in the first game was so attractive.

 310.
The Huskies run-ruled the Wildcats by scores of 13-2 and 11-3 in the first two games before losing 2-0 in the final game. At least one prognosticator thinks the game will be a toss-up, though.

 311.
Warrennolan.com has the game as a 5-4 Washington win. The Huskies have a 54 percent win probability according to the stats site.

 312.
The Wildcats had to correct course after last weekend’s games played out. The Huskies were in third place heading into the final weekend of the Pac-12 regular season. They were on their way to Salt Lake City to play Utah, a team that was 8-13 in conference play.

 313.
In Palo Alto, second-place Stanford was hosting Oregon. The Ducks were in fourth place. It looked like they might need a sweep to jump UW. That didn’t seem likely.

 314.
Everything broke just right for the Ducks. They won one game against the Cardinal. Washington lost the first two games to Utah then had the third game canceled due to weather. The two teams were tied and Oregon held the tiebreaker.

 315.
“I think a lot of us were prepared to play Oregon, which a lot of I’m assuming the Pac-12 fans were assuming as well,” said Arizona second baseman Allie Skaggs. “But my opinion at the end of the day is we’re gonna eventually play great teams every single game, so honestly, it’s just another great matchup for us. So it doesn’t matter if we’re playing Oregon, Washington, UCLA, Stanford. We’re eventually going to have to be several good teams if we want to win the Pac-12 tournament.”

 316.

 317.
It’s true that they will have to face the top teams eventually if they want the title. However, the road will be tougher right from the get-go now. The series against UW in mid-March showed some of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the Wildcats and the Huskies.

 318.
Washington comes in with a pitching rotation led by Ruby Meylan and Lindsay Lopez. Both have ERA in the top 10 of the conference. Meylan is third with a 2.04. Lopez is ninth at 2.85. Even freshman Sidne Peters isn’t far behind with her 3.43 placing 14th.

 319.
“Ruby throws hard,” Skaggs said. “So that’s one thing you just have to be on time for and not chase things out of the zone, because she’s obviously a pitcher that can expect to get you out if you’re gonna chase out of her zone. And Lindsay brings a little bit more of movement with her pitches, so she’s the one that will mix change quite a bit and kind of come in and out. Being a lefty I feel like helps, because we see a majority righties throughout the year. So they both bring some different, they’re competitive. And so it’s just up to us to kind of be disciplined in our own zones and we’ll be fine.”

 320.
The UW staff kept Arizona hitters off-balance in Tucson. The Wildcats did quite a bit of chasing out of the zone. They got just 14 hits over the three games while their staff surrendered 29. They were outscored 24-7.

 321.
Arizona can look at its final game against UW for a blueprint on how to win. They used a two-run home run by Olivia DiNardo to score. From there, the pitching kept the Huskies in check.

 322.
“If we show up and we’re the better team that day, we’re gonna win,” Skaggs said. “So I think we’re fairly evenly matched teams, so it’s just a matter of who shows up and who gets the clutch hits and who can pitch and keep the other team to less runs.”

 323.
All nine teams are trying to stretch their stay in the tournament. It’s a good way to prepare for the NCAA postseason that will start next week. The biggest difference between the conference tournament and the NCAA tournament is the single-elimination format.

 324.
“I think we’re gonna have to manage our pitching accordingly,” said Arizona head coach Caitlin Lowe. “And just come out hot in every game. I think that’s when we’ve had our best games throughout the entire year is when we set the tone early and often.”

 325.
Like five of their fellow Pac-12 teams, Arizona doesn’t have to worry about its NCAA life, though. That’s a return to normal after two years of worrying about whether they would get in at all.

 326.
The Wildcats snuck into the tournament with an RPI of 45 and a 39-22 record in 2022. They ran off five straight wins to get to the Women’s College World Series. In 2023, an RPI of 47 and a 29-25 record weren’t enough to continue the streak that had lasted for three-and-a-half decades.

 327.
While Lowe said she doesn’t think the team compares itself to the other Arizona teams that came before, it’s safe to say that players come to Tucson expecting to go to the tournament every year. That’s a tradition built by those who came before. This year, Arizona’s freshmen and sophomores will get to know what it actually feels like to experience that tradition.

 328.
If Arizona wins its first game in the tournament, it will face the winner between No. 1 seed UCLA and either No. 8 Oregon State or No. 9 Arizona State. That game will take place on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. MST/PDT.

 329.
