20.
Mark Pope is close to finishing off the 2024-25 roster. Will Vinson be a part of it?

As the Kentucky Wildcats look to finish off the 2024-25 roster, we have a new name to monitor, and it actually comes from the high school ranks.

 21.
According to On3’s Jamie Shaw, 3-star center Jamie Vinson is set to visit Kentucky next Tuesday.

 22.
Vinson has visited South Carolina and plans to visit Rutgers this weekend.

 29.

 30.
Vinson hails from Texas and plays for national powerhouse Oak Hill Academy. He’s currently ranked 239th nationally, 41st among centers, and 11th in the state of Texas in the class of 2024 via 247 Sports Composite.

 31.
I’d be willing to bet new Kentucky assistant Alvin Brooks III is part of why Kentucky is getting in the mix, as Brooks heavily recruited the state of Texas during his time at Baylor.

 32.
Vinson committed to Vanderbilt last October before backing out once former head coach Jerry Stackhouse was fired. The 6-foot-11, 210-pound center holds additional scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Cal, Texas Tech, Tulsa, and Nevada, among others.

 33.
Kentucky has just two scholarship spots left, and the hope is one of them will be filled by either Jaxson Robinson or Chaz Lanier. But those are scoring guards, whereas Vinson is a true big man who would give Kentucky some added frontcourt depth.

 34.
Brandon Garrison, Andrew Carr, and Amari Williams are the only players on the roster who are taller than 6-foot-7, so having another close-to-7-foot big man would be ideal.

 35.
One to watch for.

 36.

 56.
 57.
Sounds like the Cats are in a good spot if Robinson stays in school.

Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats have two scholarships remaining as they look to fill out the roster for the 2024-25 season.

 58.
Several names have gotten a lot of buzz recently, but one has been tied to the Cats since Pope was announced as the new Head Coach in Lexington.

 59.
That player would be Jaxson Robinson.

 60.
Currently going through the NBA Draft process, Robinson burst onto the scene for BYU last season, which has got him projected as a mid-to-late second-round pick in the NBA Draft next month. That projection has, however, left a question among the BBN and most college basketball circles: Will Robinson keep his name in the draft?

 61.
That question seems to still be up in the air, but things continue to trend in the right direction for Kentucky if he does withdraw by the May 29th deadline.

 62.
According to a report by Sarah Todd of Deseret News, several sources close to the situation really like Kentucky’s chances to land Robinson.

 63.
“Multiple sources close to the situation told the Deseret News that if Robinson decides to withdraw from the draft, they fully expect him to be playing for Kentucky next season,” writes Todd.

 64.
It’s worth noting that the Kansas Jayhawks are now seen as a major contender for Robinson if he returns to school, but Kentucky will obviously still be a major player.

 65.
At the moment, it appears that Robinson and North Florida transfer guard Chaz Lanier are the two players with the most traction to take one of the final roster spots. Add one of them, and the roster immediately adds a go-to-scorer to help with the solid depth built by Coach Pope and his staff.

 66.
This could be a situation where Kentucky takes a commitment from whoever is willing to commit first. And as of now, Lanier is likelier to make a decision first, so there’s a chance Kentucky lands him, and Robinson returns to school down the road before landing at Kansas.

 67.
We are still on ‘BOOM’ watch, BBN. Let's see if one of Lanier/Robinson will join the fold.

 68.

 121.
Who isn’t pumped up for a new college football video game!?

In just over two months, you’ll be able to play EA Sports College Football 25.

 122.
On Thursday, EA announced the official release date is July 19th, and the cover for the high-profile video game has been dropped.

 123.
Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, and Colorado wide receiver Travis Hunter are the three main players on the cover. It has been over a decade since the game was released, and it should have a strong market.

 124.
The game’s base version is $69.99, and the deluxe edition costs $99.99. There’s also the MVP bundle, which costs $149.99 and includes the deluxe editions for both EA Sports College Football 25 and Madden 25.

 125.
With the Kentucky Wildcats having been one of the better SEC programs recently, expect them to have an exciting team in the video game.

 126.
That said, here’s the released cover and date from the EA Sports College Football official Instagram page.

 165.
 166.
Almonor is a strong addition to Mark Pope’s roster.

The Kentucky Wildcats got another one.

 167.
This time, it is Fairleigh Dickinson forward Ansley Almonor, who averaged 16.4 points per game for the Knights. He will be Pope’s 11th scholarship player for the 2024-25 season.

 168.
The 6-foot-7 star is transferring after his third season with FDU, where he has increased his scoring each season and was part of the 16-seeded Knights’ win over 1-seed Purdue in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

 169.
Almonor will add another deep weapon for Mark Pope as well, making 2.9 triples per game last season. He shot 39.4% from deep as well. Pope is going to have a roster capable of lighting it up from deep, so expect to see the 3s flying in Rupp Arena next season and beyond.

 170.
That said, let’s dive into how Twitter viewed the Cats’ latest addition!

 318.
 319.
Kentucky views Chaz Lanier as the missing piece. What happens if he doesn’t pick the Cats?

The Kentucky Wildcats scored another transfer pledge Thursday, landing Fairleigh Dickinson forward Ansley Almonor.

 320.
While Almonor will be a nice bench piece of Mark Pope’s first roster, there’s still one more big fish Kentucky hopes to land in the coming weeks. The primary targets are BYU guard Jaxson Robinson, North Florida guard Chaz Lanier, and Miami Hurricanes guard Wooga Poplar. All three are testing the NBA Draft waters, so we could be a few weeks away from decisions being made closer to the May 29th NCAA withdrawal deadline.

 321.
In the meantime, we’ve got updates on all three transfers.

 322.
First off, Poplar is taking a visit with Villanova and plans to visit Oregon, per Jon Rothstein. Villanova has been seen as one of, if not the favorite for the Philadelphia native.

 323.

 324.

 325.
Miami transfer Wooga Poplar is visiting Villanova today and will visit Oregon soon, per his father.
— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 16, 2024
 326.

 327.
 328.
 329.

 330.
Poplar’s father recently told Adam Zagoria his son planned to visit Kentucky, but that hasn’t happened yet. However, Kentucky landed guys like Brandon Garrison and Lamont Butler without them visiting, so it’s not like Poplar has to visit Lexington for the Cats to have a chance.

 331.

 332.
Elsewhere, Chaz Lanier is having his own pro day today, so perhaps we’ll start to see some movement once that concludes.

 333.
Assuming Lanier returns to school, Kentucky and Tennessee are the top contenders, and it sounds like this is a true toss-up.

 334.
On3’s Jamie Shaw shared an update on Lanier’s recruitment and why Kentucky has been making a strong push for the big-time shooter.

 335.
“Speaking of Kentucky, sources close to the recruitment tell me that the Wildcats have gone all in on Lanier. Some have suggested he is their top option left on the board. Sources have indicated that the staff likes Lanier’s ability to score and feels he is the missing piece to the roster they have built,” Shaw wrote.

 336.
Who will ultimately win out? As of now, Shaw does think Kentucky may have a slight edge, but again, it’s far too close to call and could easily go in favor of the Vols.

 337.
“While I am told Tennessee carried the early momentum, Kentucky prioritizing Lanier has made up a lot of ground in his recruitment. While recency bias, and one source close to the recruitment, would give Kentucky the slight edge here, other sources would say it is too close to call at this point,” Shaw wrote.

 338.

 339.
You may be wondering why Kentucky seems to be all-in on Lanier when Jaxson Robinson is still out there. After all, he’s someone Pope has actually coached for two seasons and was the 2024 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year.

 340.
Well, here’s the thing. Robinson’s goal is the NBA, and it’s looking more and more like he’ll at least be a second-round pick in what’s widely viewed as a historically weak draft class.

 341.
He’s currently taking part in the NBA Draft Combine and tested very well for a guard.

 342.

 343.

 344.
BYU wing Jaxson Robinson #NBADraft

6'4.75" (without shoes)
188.6 lbs
6'11.75" wingspan
— No Ceilings (@NoCeilingsNBA) May 13, 2024
 345.

 346.
 347.
 348.

 349.
It’s looking more and more like Robinson will stay in the draft, but if he does return to college, is Kentucky the pick?

 350.
Not necessarily, as Kansas is now making a strong push for Robinson. The Jayhawks are looking to add another perimeter player after losing Riley Kugel. Bill Self is very familiar with Robinson after facing him in the Big 12 for the past two seasons.

 351.
So even if Robinson returns to college, Kentucky isn’t the surefire pick it once was.

 352.
As of now, my prediction would be Robinson stays in the draft.

 382.
Almonor began his college career as an unranked class of 2021 recruit out of Our Saviour Lutheran School in New York. He played sparingly as a true freshman, appearing in 24 games (four starts) while averaging 3.5 points and 1.7 rebounds in 9.6 minutes per game. He showed signs of becoming an impact player down the stretch, reaching double figures in three of his final seven games while hitting 10 of his last 21 3-point attempts.

 383.
Over the next two seasons, the 6-foot-7, 219-pound Almonor became one of the best shooters and overall players in the Northeast Conference.

 384.

In the 2022-23 campaign, he averaged 13.6 points on 43.4% field-goal shooting (38.1% on 3s), 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. The Knights made it to the NCAA Tournament as a 16-seed, beat Texas Southern in the play-in game, then took down top-seeded Purdue in the Round of 64, becoming just the second 16-seed all-time to take down a 1-seed before falling to Florida Atlantic in the Round of 32.

 385.
In the win over Texas Southern, Almonor recorded 23 points on 5/11 shooting (5/8 on 3s) and eight rebounds. But in the games vs. Purdue and FAU, he was held to eight total points on 2/12 shooting (2/8 from deep), with 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, two steals, and four turnovers.

 386.
Another notable performance that year came in an 83-61 loss at Pittsburgh in which he scored 10 points on 4/9 shooting (1/4 from deep) with two boards, two blocks, an assist, and a steal.

 387.
In the 2023-24 season, Almonor averaged 16.4 points on 43.6% field-goal shooting (39.4% on 3-balls), 5.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. His most notable performance came in a 104-71 loss at Illinois, where he recorded 20 points on 7/16 shooting (4/9 on 3s), three rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in 32 minutes.

 388.
He also scored 21 points on 7/16 shooting (4/12 from deep) with three boards, two assists, and a block in a 71-70 win over a Saint Peter’s team that won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.

 389.
Almonor attempted 7.4 3s per game last season (12.8 total attempts) and 5.5 the year prior (11.1 attempts), so about half of his shot attempts come from deep. He’s also an 82% free-throw shooter for his career on 2.1 attempts per game.

 390.
Almonor primarily played from the 5 spot for the undersized Knights, but he’s more suited as a stretch 4 at a school like Kentucky playing in the SEC. He’ll be Kentucky’s fourth big man behind Amari Williams, Andrew Carr, and Brandon Garrison, though we should expect Otega Oweh to also log some small-ball 4 minutes as he did at Oklahoma.

 412.
 413.
Pope has been very busy since becoming the new head coach at Kentucky.

The early stages of the Mark Pope era as the Kentucky Wildcats’ head coach have been nothing short of exciting.

 414.
Pope has reignited this fanbase in a way that the BBN desperately needed, and it all started with his introductory press conference inside a packed Rupp Arena.

 415.
Since that day, Pope has been working non-stop to build his first roster as the head coach in Lexington.

 416.
However, Pope couldn’t do this job alone, and having a good staff in place is crucial to his success.

 417.
I think it is safe to say that Pope has put together one of the best staffs in college basketball as he brought in Alvin Brooks III, Cody Fueger, Jason Hart, and Mark Fox as assistant coaches.

 418.
Luckily, the new transfer portal makes it easier than ever before to build a very good roster in year one under a new coach.

 419.
Looking at the roster additions so far, Pope has landed Koby Brea, Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr, Collin Chandler, Brandon Garrison, Kerr Kriisa, Otega Oweh, and Amari Williams while also keeping the commitment of Travis Perry.

 420.
Pope will likely need a couple more additions, including someone to be “the guy” on the roster, but there are options to fill that role.

 421.
I think it is safe to say that Pope has had a very successful first few weeks on the job in Lexington, but we want to hear from the fans.

 422.
How would you grade Mark Pope’s offseason thus far? Answer in the poll below and let us know in the comments section!
