20.
I don’t know if this was the right choice, but it’s the choice that Marquette made.

A two week search for a new head men’s lacrosse coach at Marquette landed right back where it started, in the team offices at the PRC on campus. On Friday afternoon, Athletic Director Bill Scholl announced that long time assistant coach and former MU short stick midfielder Jake Richard would be the third head coach in Marquette history. The promotion will allow Richard to continue his streak of being a part of every single men’s lacrosse game in Marquette history.

 23.
.@JakeRichard27 will serve as the third men's lacrosse head coach in @MarquetteU history. Richard is a PLL/Team USA athlete and former MU USILA All-American who has been part of every game in Marquette history. #WeAreMarquette

MORE INFO ⬇️https://t.co/YnvJFsDs20 pic.twitter.com/BNtPPzYryv
— Marquette Lacrosse (@MarquetteMLax) May 17, 2024
 24.

 25.
 26.
 27.

 28.
After a decorated four year career with the Golden Eagles ended in 2016, Richard was immediately hired as an assistant coach by then-head coach Joe Amplo. In 2019, when Andrew Stimmel came on board to lead the team, he retained Richard on his staff, and Richard has been there ever since. That’s eight years of service as defensive coordinator for Marquette men’s lacrosse after four years of playing short stick defensive midfielder for MU.

 29.
This is where we get into uncomfortable question time. You can read the Marquette press release for all of the reasons why the athletic department can highlight to say that Richard was a good to great defensive coach for the Golden Eagles. You can’t debate the stats that they are pointing out and the player development and so on.

 30.
What we can debate is 1) whether Andrew Stimmel was let go as head coach or actually stepped down and then 2) how much culpability Richard’s end of the field bears for Marquette’s record the past two seasons.

 31.
For example: It’s hard to say that Marquette was doing just fine on defense in 2024 when Lacrosse Reference has them at #49 out of 76 teams in the country in defensive efficiency. It’s also hard to say that the 4-10 record should be pinned on Richard’s defense when the offense ranks #59 in the country overall in efficiency as well as #59 out of 76 teams in turnover rate. Would MU’s defense look a little bit better if the offense wasn’t losing the ball on more than one-third of their possessions? Yeah, probably!

 32.
If the MU administration truly believes that the lacrosse locker room just needs a new voice on the offensive end of the field and that will fix things, then sure, maybe turning over the reigns to Jake Richard is a good idea. On the flip side, this does mean that Richard needs to show immediate improvement in 2025. This is a “stay the course” hire at the very least, and if that’s the case, then that faith needs to be rewarded with results on the field post haste.

 33.
At worst, it’s a “we’re afraid to hire someone that wasn’t a Marquette assistant coach” hire, as Stimmel worked for Joe Amplo back when Richard was a player on the field. If Stimmel was in fact let go or not renewed or whatever that’s not him actively telling Bill Scholl that he wants to walk away, then promoting one of his assistants, someone who bears some responsibility for the 10-18 record the last two seasons, is an actively bad decision.

 51.
 52.
That makes six coaching changes at Marquette during the 2023-24 season, which seems like a lot when there’s only 11 jobs.

Shortly before Marquette did a Friday afternoon news dump on hiring Jake Richard as the new head men’s lacrosse coach, it looked like the MU athletic department was doing a Friday afternoon news dump of the more traditional kind. Late on Friday, Marquette Athletic Director Bill Scholl announced that Sean Birren was stepping down from his role as head men’s and women’s cross country coach in addition to his role as distance running assistant coach on the track and field teams.

 53.

 54.

 55.
Marquette University head cross country coach Sean Birren has stepped down, effective immediately, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl announced Friday afternoon.

RELEASE: ⤵https://t.co/26U70KLVuX pic.twitter.com/RyeY3Jj275
— Marquette TF/XC (@MUTFXC) May 17, 2024

 60.
Now, while a traditional Friday afternoon news dump is a “we don’t want anyone to talk about this, so we’ll just drop this out there when no one is looking,” perhaps this doesn’t qualify as that completely. I’ll let Coach Birren say it in his own words.

 81.
To explain further and specifically: Sean Birren has cancer. In his eye.

 82.

 83.

 84.
This was life last year - A year later I still believe MU is about family, through good and bad times. The week after this I was diagnosed with cancer in my eye and my MU family stepped up big when I needed support!
MARQUETTE NATION!!!!! https://t.co/4PDm6kpOtf
— CoachBirren (@CoachBirren) March 5, 2024
 85.

 86.
 87.
 88.

 89.
So, yeah. If both his family and the team have suffered as a result, then it’s best for Birren to focus on his health and his family.

 90.
Birren has been the head coach of the cross country teams since stepping in as the interim coach when Mike Nelson left in August 2019 to run the track & cross country programs at Monmouth. In terms of results on the course, there’s an argument that his first season, the interim year in 2019, was Marquette’s best under Birren’s direction. The MU men finished fourth at the Big East Championship that season, and neither the men’s or the women’s team have matched or bettered that finish in the four conference meets since.

 91.
Things will not be getting easier for whoever is hired to replace Birren. Marquette track & field and cross country was informed during the 2022-23 school year that there would no longer be athletic scholarships offered for their teams and the existing scholarship offers would be ended by the start of the 2025-26 school year. With 40-something men and women splitting a maximum of 12.6 or 18 scholarships respectively for track & cross country combined, it already was an uphill battle, but it’s definitely not easier now as the program seems to be locked into a lack of scholarship assistance going forward.

 110.
 111.
We have to try to assess a season that was cut short by injury in January.

With the 2023-24 season long since in the books, let’s take a few moments to look back at the performance of each member of YOUR Marquette Golden Eagles this year. While we’re at it, we’ll also take a look back at our player previews and see how our preseason prognostications stack up with how things actually played out. We’ll run through the roster in order of total minutes played going from lowest to highest, and today we move on to the review where we have to deal with a season ending injury.......

 112.
Sean Jones

 115.

 116.

 117. WHAT WE SAID:

 118.

 119.
Reasonable Expectations

 120.
While optimism can abound for Jones and his development as a collegiate player, the fact of the matter is that the collection of guys looking to play backcourt minutes for Marquette in 2023-24 is actually bigger in number than it was last season. Not only does Jones have to contend with his backcourt mates from last season — and it’s hard to pry those Big East Championship starters off the court — now there’s also two freshmen in the form of Tre Norman and Zaide Lowery looking to get some action as the Golden Eagles chase back-to-back Big East titles.

 121.
What I’m trying to say is that if you’re putting more expectations on Sean Jones than “will make use of his speed to be a literal change of pace option in the backcourt for Marquette,” then you’re probably just setting yourself up to be disappointed in his season for no reason other than you decided it’s a thing you want to do to yourself. Jones’ pre-injury averages from last season of 4.5 points and 1.2 assists per game in 13 minutes of action might be right about where we could expect him to land. The BartTorvik.com algorithm projects Jones at just 36% of MU’s minutes, which is 14.4 per night. Not that far from last year’s 13, is it? 4.5 points, just under a rebound, just over an assist is the statline projection from the fancy T-Rank computers, and yep, like I said, that’s about what he was doing last year.

 122.
But again: Tyler Kolek, Kam Jones, and Stevie Mitchell are all still out there for Marquette, so there’s nowhere for Jones to ascend by way of an open spot in the rotation. If Jones is getting back to last year’s pre-injury numbers with Norman and Lowery potentially nipping at his heels in terms of playing time, then that’s pretty good.

 123.
Why You Should Get Excited

 124.
I alluded to Sean Jones’ footspeed a moment ago. Jones figuring out how to use that speed at the Division 1 level was always going to be the biggest part of his jump from the Ohio high school scene and the club circuit to the Big East. A year ago, Shaka Smart was lauding praise on his freshman guard for being lightning quick, but this year, the coach is going in a different direction. Not a change, but an improvement.

 125.
If Jones has figured that aspect of his game out, if he’s making big steps, then that adds dimensions to what the coaching staff is trying to do with this year’s version of the roster. If they can trust Jones for one extra minute per game, that’s one extra minute per game that Tyler Kolek gets to rest. That’s one extra minute per game off of Kolek’s workload as the season goes along, one extra minute of reserve energy in the All-American’s legs when the already bright spotlights get a little bit brighter in March.

 126.
Jones won’t be asked to carry a heavy load for Marquette this year, but if he is making the development that Smart says he is and can carry a heavier load than last year, that’s going to make everything flow a little bit easier for everyone.

 127.
Potential Pitfalls

 128.
Shaka Smart said Jones has “made a real step” in adjusting how he makes use of his speed since last year. I don’t know about you guys, but Shaka Smart strikes me as a gentleman who makes careful choices about the words he uses, and he deploys them on purpose.

 129.
Which means it’s a little bit interesting that Smart said that Jones has made one singular step forward from last year. Not plural steps, not a leap, not a jump, just a step. Maybe that’s just me reading way too much into things. But if Smart needs his sophomore guard to take a leap forward to give him more responsibility on the floor, then maybe Jones isn’t quite there yet.

 130.
The other thing that we have to be worried about relative to what we see from Sean Jones this year is the mere existence of Tre Norman and Zaide Lowery. My general sense of those guys is that they can’t do what Jones can do when it comes to speed on the court. However, that’s not the only thing that matters on the court. What if the things that Norman and Lowery excel at turn out to be things that Marquette needs more than Jones’ speed and quickness? It’s the coaching staff’s job to figure out how to use all the ingredients at their disposal to create the best meal possible. If the best possible version of Marquette is less Jones and more Norman and/or Lowery, then that’s the direction that they have to go.

 131.

 132.
I want to start this by making a slight accommodation for Sean Jones’ season ending injury that happened late in the “was already a disaster, this was unnecessarily mean, basketball gods” home game against Butler. Because that was on January 10th, Jones finished the year playing in just 17.6% of Marquette’s minutes this season, and as such, he doesn’t qualify for the national leaders on KenPom.com. This is important here because Jones’ assist rate of 20.4% would have been in the top 400 and his steal rate of 3.3% was just barely behind Chase Ross at #107 in the country. Both numbers are notable increases from what Jones was doing as a freshman, and I think it’s important to point out how much he had stepped up his game in Year Two, even if the existence of his injury are preventing us from seeing it at glance.

 133.
And the fact of the matter is that it looked like Jones was better than he was in Year One. His minutes were more consistent, dipping into single digits just once as Marquette blew Texas off the floor in December. That’s something we couldn’t say about Freshman Sean Jones through the first two-plus months of the season. His rim attacking was better, converting 55% of his two-point attempts. His free throw shooting was better, jumping up more than 10 percentage points to an even 75%. Jones was getting into passing lanes more and turning the ball over less, both of which is a sign that he was figuring out how to use his speed both to be disruptive and protect the ball, too. His rebounding was a little bit better, and any time you get a guy under six feet tall rebounding the ball better, you’re coming out way ahead.

 134.
In short, I think we were seeing exactly the step forward that you want to see from a sophomore, especially one who’s probably going to be handed the reins of the offense the following season. It’s just that his knee quit on him in January, a complete freak non-contact deal, and so we didn’t get to see Jones really show us what he had against most of the Big East schedule or in the postseason.

 135.
Heck, there’s a way to look at Jones’ injury and wonder if that was part of the reason why Tyler Kolek suffered his oblique injury late in the regular season. I mentioned it in Jones’ preview: Every quality minute he provides was one that Kolek didn’t have to play. No Jones = more Kolek, and who’s to say that a few extra minutes here and there didn’t cause the wear and tear that eventually led to Kolek’s muscle strain?

 136.
The real bummer of Jones’ shortened season? Not only did we not get a full look at what he could do as the schedule difficulty ramped up, the timing of his injury means we don’t actually know when we’ll see Sean Jones on the court again. If it’s an eight month recovery to full clearance, then he’s back to full speed conditioning and so on in September, before practices for 2024-25 start. If it’s 10 months, then Jones is going to be only just starting to get himself up to game speed when the ball goes into the air for the first time. If it’s longer than that? Jones and the coaching staff are going to have to have a long conversation about whether not he should play next season at all.

 137.
BEST GAME

 138.
And I quote myself:

 139.

 140.
Creighton’s Francisco Farabello canned a triple with 10:15 left in the game to put the Jays up 48-46.... and that’s when Sean Jones went to work.

 141.
Hey, remember when I said that he was struggling to shoot the ball all season? Yeah. The sophomore from Ohio made back-to-back triples for the Golden Eagles, ramrodding the lead to four, 52-48, then he drew a foul and sank his throws to make it 56-51.... and then converted a layup, 58-51, 5:59 to play. Going back to a bucket he scored with 12:18 to go, that’s a 16-8 Marquette run with Jones throwing in 12. Just from his threes onwards, that’s a 12-3 run, with Jones getting 10 and Kam Jones contributing the other two.

 142.
Creighton would not lead again.

 143.

 144.
That’s #10 Marquette’s December 30th 72-67 home win over #22 Creighton. Jones finished tied with Tyler Kolek for points in the game with 15, but that was a career high for him, getting there on 5-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-5 from long range. Jones added two steals to the proceedings as well.

 145.
SEASON GRADE

 146.
I have to give it an incomplete. Jones played in 16 of Marquette’s 37 games. That’s less than half, and it’s a little on the unfair side to assign a grade to it when we didn’t see him for the final two months-plus of the year.

 166.
The Golden Eagles are looking to be a little bit junior heavy in Cara Consuegra’s first season on the sidelines.

We’ve got two new Marquette women’s basketball players to talk about here today, but first I want to swing around and grab a quote from new head coach Cara Consuegra on a previous commitment. We got a press release about three new transfers on Wednesday, but one of them — Jada Bediako — was already known to us from earlier in May. Here’s what Consuegra had to say about the Georgia Tech freshman:

 167.

“We are excited to bring Jada to Milwaukee,” Consuegra said. “Jada has valuable experience in international play with Team Canada and immediately brings tremendous depth to our frontcourt.”

 168.
That moves us along to new business! There were two commitments in rapid-ish fire fashion on Monday and Tuesday, with Syracuse guard Kennedi Perkins announcing on Monday evening and Southern Illinois guard Jaidynn Mason doing the same on Tuesday. We’ll go in chronological order.....

 188.

 189.
Here’s Consuegra’s quote:

 190.

“We can’t wait to welcome Kennedi to Milwaukee,” Consuegra said. “Kennedi has tremendous college experience and is a true competitor who will help our team in many ways at the guard position.”

 191.
To a certain extent, this is a move closer to home for Perkins, who spent two years in upstate New York. The 5’6” guard hails from Bolingbrook in the Chicago suburbs, and given that she played backup to Dyaisha Fair for the past two years and Fair is now with the Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA, you would think playing time would open up for Perkins..... and it has, just in Milwaukee, just up the road (so to speak) from her high school.

 192.
She appeared in 52 games for the Orange over the past two seasons, and even with a three-ish minute per game boost as a sophomore, her stats stayed relatively the same. 2.8 points as a freshman, 2.6 as a sophomore. 1.0 and 1.1 rebounds for the same years, but assists bumped up nicely in Year Two, going from 0.3 to 1.0 per game. There are questions to be asked about Perkins’ shooting abilities, as she never did better than 43% from the field in either season with Syracuse, and she has just 24 three-point attempts in two years. She went 4-for-9 as a freshman, but just 3-for-15 as a sophomore. Her turnover rate is a little bit on the high side, going north of 21% in both seasons, so we’ll have to wait and see what happens under Consuegra’s direction.

 212.

 213.
Here’s what Consuegra had to say:

 214.

“We are thrilled Jaidynn is coming to Marquette,” Consuegra said. “Jaidynn is a dynamic guard who scores and defends at a very high level, and we can’t wait to see her play her game in the BIG EAST.”

 215.
Hailing from Blue Springs, Missouri, which is on the east side of Kansas City, Mason spent two seasons on the roster at Southern Illinois. She appeared in 31 games with four starts as a freshman, and made her way onto the Missouri Valley All-Freshman Team at the end of the 2022-23 season. Mason averaged 7.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, and added nearly two steals per outing on the defensive end, too. The 5’9” guard was mostly a starter this past year, getting the nod in 21 of her 23 appearances as SIU went 11-20. Mason jumped up to nearly 30 minutes per game and averaged 14.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.7 steals.

 216.
She was one of the highest usage rate players in the country as a sophomore according to Her Hoop Stats, ranking #35 in the country there and only 15 people shot more two point attempts per game, but she did also land at #108 in assist rate as well. Across two seasons, Mason has only attempted 65 three-pointers, and that’s kind of good news, as she’s a career 18.5% shooter.

 217.
And now, the brand new freshly updated scholarship chart!

 218.

 219.
 220.

 221.
That brings Marquette to 11 players on the roster for 2024-25. Given that we got one press release for Consuegra’s signee at Charlotte and a Charlotte player transferring, and then another for these three women, I suspect that this might be the end of the line in roster building for next season. 11 players is enough to get you through 5-on-5 in practice, so I don’t know if Consuegra needs to go much deeper than this.

 222.
In addition to that, I think it’s probably a good idea to not take any more players with two years of eligibility, as there are now five women who will be juniors next fall. Losing five at a time after the 2025-26 season is a pretty big dropoff when you’re rebuilding the roster stability to a certain extent, and making that worse seems like a bad idea. It’s also seeming likely that Consuegra will play 2024-25 without any freshmen on the roster. That opens up the door to taking post-freshman year transfers almost exclusively next year in addition to whatever high school recruits Marquette adds. The roster is going to need a little bit of rebalancing after this season, but that’s an issue for Future Cara to worry about for now.

 241.
 242.
If you believe what Andy Katz says at least.

I didn’t expect Marquette men’s basketball scheduling rumors to come out of the NBA Draft Combine. Sure, updates about Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro as they participate, but 2024-25 schedule updates? Nope.

 243.
But that’s what we got, as NCAA.com & Big Ten Network reporter Andy Katz wandered around talking to anyone who was at Wintrust Arena in Chicago for the combine. But for a minute there, it looked like we were only going to get a schedule tease before Katz went ahead and ruined the fun.

 244.
Let me explain.

 245.
First, Katz posted an interview with Marquette head coach Shaka Smart.

 246.

 247.

 248.
The highest-profile high major team that has not taken a player in the portal? @MarquetteMBB. Coach @CoachShakaSmart on that, the @NBADraft, Kam Jones and more! @BIGEASTMBB @MarchMadnessMBB: pic.twitter.com/GF3PmJ0Q7X
— Andy Katz (@TheAndyKatz) May 14, 2024
 249.

 250.
 251.
 252.

 253.
The last question is about Marquette’s schedule for the 2024-25 season, and Smart calls it “an ambitious schedule.” Of course, we already know about the Purdue game, the Georgia game, and the Iowa State matchup as part of the Big East/Big 12 Battle, and there’s always the yearly contest against Wisconsin as well.

 254.
And then Shaka says “Three Big Ten teams that we’ll play.” Obviously Purdue and Wisconsin are two of them, and he says all three are signed contracts but only two can be mentioned right now, and that’s Purdue and Wisconsin. Smart follows that up with “one really, really tough road game that we’ll play early in the season.”

 255.
Of course, that made think, “oh, fun, I can do a run down of what Big Ten teams would qualify as really really tough and would be the most interesting to play in terms of when did MU last play them or whatever.”

 256.
And then, a bit over an hour later, Andy Katz just sucks all the life out of the fun we were going to have.

 257.

 258.

 264.
I guess the good news is that he also dropped in a possible NC State game, which Shaka did not mention, alongside just spoiling the fun and saying the Big Ten road game is Maryland. Hey, I get that Shaka probably told him off camera that the game is Maryland, and I get that Katz is talking to anyone who will talk to him at the Combine, but my guy. When a coach says he CAN’T say a game publicly, signed or not, I dunno, maybe don’t step on that coach’s reason for not saying it out loud. It’s not like you’re breaking the news that AJ Dybantsa is committing to Marquette or something.

 275.
Maryland Terrapins

 276.
2023-24 Record: 16-17, 7-13 Big Ten
Postseason: Only a loss to Wisconsin in the second round of the conference tournament.
Final KenPom.com Ranking: #62
2024-25 BartTorvik.com Projection: #44, with a record of 19-12 and 10-10 in the league
Head Coach: Our old friend Kevin Willard, going into his third season in College Park. He has a record of 38-30 with the Terrapins and 308-240 in 17 years as a Division 1 head coach.
All-Time Series: Maryland leads, 1-0. The only meeting was in the title game of the 2019 Orlando Invitational as the Terrapins held Markus Howard to just six points after back-to-back 40+ point games in the first two rounds of the event. Brendan Bailey had 27, Sacar Anim had 21, and Marquette lost to the #5 team in the country by 21 points.

 277.
According to the BartTorvik.com RosterCast — and I’m just trusting it here, because I am absolutely not going to do the deep dive on Maryland’s transfer portal action for a game that may or may not actually happen — the Terrapins are losing two of their top three scorers from last season, leaving Julian Reese as the top threat after the 6’9” Baltimore native averaged 13.7 per game without even attempting a single three-pointer. He was a double-double threat every time the Terps took the court, averaging 9.7 rebounds per game as well, and he’s pretty good at blocking shots on top of that. The question remains as to how effective he’ll be without leading scorer Jahmir Young or Donta Scott chipping in 11.2 per night, but “Reliable Post Option” is a good place to start a season.

 278.
On one hand, I don’t think Maryland fans are quite happy with The Kevin Willard Experience after two seasons. They did win an NCAA tournament game in Year 1, toppling West Virginia as the #8 seed, but the Terrapins went 14-13 after an 8-0 start to the season that moved them from unranked in the preseason AP poll to #13 in the country. That was followed up with a 1-3 start to the 2023-24 season and a 2-8 run to end the regular season that left Maryland in the 80s in the NET on Selection Sunday and nowhere close to an at-large bid. They were a legitimately great defensive squad, posting Willard’s best KenPom.com defensive ranking since a #10 finish in 2016, but they couldn’t throw the ball in the ocean. “Put ball through rim” is the name of the game, and it doesn’t matter how many stops you get if you can’t do the other thing.

 279.
I’m not going to say that Willard’s job is on the line, but I am going to say 1) it very much entertains me that this is not going well after everyone in the world presumed this job was going to Willard when Mark Turgeon stepped down mid-season and 2) It would probably be best for Willard if next year’s team didn’t stink.

 280.
And now, NC State.

 281.
NC State Wolfpack

 282.
2023-24 Record: 26-15, 9-11 ACC
Postseason: They went from trailing at the half in the ACC tournament to DFL Louisville to the ACC championship and an automatic bid to the Final Four, including a 67-58 win over Marquette because the Golden Eagles shot 4-for-31 behind the arc.
Final KenPom.com Ranking: #45
2024-25 BartTorvik.com Projection: #66, with a record of 18-13 and 10-10 in the ACC
Head Coach: Kevin Keatts, going into his eighth season with the Wolfpack and 11th season as a Division 1 head coach. Thanks to the Final Four run, he has a record of 139-94 at NC State and 211-122 overall.
All-Time Series: NC State leads 4-2 after the 2024 NCAA tournament meeting, which was the first encounter since 2009. The series started with the 1974 National Championship Game, which is kind of fun.

 283.
The DJs are gone.

 284.
Both DJ Horne and DJ Burns will not return for NC State next season, and seeing as they combined for 23 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists against Marquette in the tournament, that’s great news. Jayden Taylor is their leading returning scorer after averaging 11.2 points per game last year, and Kevin Keatts will also be looking to replace leading rebounder Mohamed Diarra.

 285.
I don’t want to be mean to anyone here, but the BartTorvik.com RosterCast for the Wolfpack says that Georgetown transfer Dontrez Styles is their projected #2 contributor behind Taylor. Styles was clearly a bright spot for the Hoyas last year.... but also they were one of the worst defensive teams in the country and only managed to get to two Big East wins because they beat DePaul by an aggregate score of four points. Styles can’t do everything but Georgetown was real bad and I’m not exactly taking a team seriously when they’re relying on GU’s second best scorer to carry the load for them.

 306.
I’m not above changing my allegiances based on where my favorite player in the league is.

Since 2019, we’ve had our fair share of Connecticut Sun content on this here internet website. That’s because the 2019 Big East Player of the Year and former Marquette guard Natisha Hiedeman was on the roster with the Sun. She went from drafted to traded to cut to picked up to cut to picked up to full time roster player over the past five WNBA seasons...... but now things have changed once again.

 307.
Back in January, the Sun and the Minnesota Lynx made a trade, sending Hiedeman to the land of 10,000 lakes to continue her stateside professional career. The Lynx are actually the team that officially drafted Hiedeman back in 2019, but a draft day trade immediately sent her over to Connecticut, so to a certain extent, this is a full circle moment.

 308.
And so, Anonymous Eagle follows along in that circle, and now instead of standing up for the Sun at all moments, we will be tracking Hiedeman’s career with the Lynx. That includes creating this very helpful rundown of all of the times this season that Minnesota will be on national television, including streaming appearances like Tuesday night’s season opener!

 309.
Eight of Minnesota’s 24 games that we’re highlighting here are available as part of the WNBA’s new partnership with ION. It might be available in your location by way of cable or satellite, but it’s also available on several streaming platforms, like Tubi, Fubo, and the Roku Channel. I’ll leave it up to you to figure out how to watch those games, or at least what possibility is right for you.

 329.

 330.
 331.
Her time in the 800 meter run is good enough to qualify for the NCAA preliminary meet in two weeks.

The Big East held the 2024 Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Villanova’s campus over the weekend, and depending on how you look at it, junior Daylee Braden had the most successful trip to Pennsylvania out of anyone in the Marquette travel party.

 332.
On Saturday, Braden competed in the 800 meter run finals. It was a tight race with the top five finishers all coming within 1.2 seconds of each other. Braden ended up officially finishing fourth in the race, which will probably make you say, hey, wait, didn’t you say she had the most successful trip? Yep, and not just because she was less than 0.8 seconds behind VU’s Madison Martinez, who won.

 333.

 334.

 335.
Daylee Braden sets a PR in the 800m final to finish fourth

⏱️» 2:04.93
» https://t.co/d5fgs5v0Ok
» https://t.co/CAkkoe27TU#WeAreMarquette | @BIGEAST pic.twitter.com/a3pL3K0YdM
— Marquette TF/XC (@MUTFXC) May 11, 2024
 336.

 337.
 338.
 339.

 340.
That was Braden’s best ever time in the 800m, but that’s not where the success comes in. Her time of 2:04.93 is also the best 800m time in Marquette history, and by a wide margin. Jessica Parker set the previous record in 2017, running the race with a time of 2:06.97, more than two full seconds. Heck, Braden’s qualifying time of 2:08.91 was the fifth fastest time in program history...... and not her fastest time of the season, since she had a 2:07.76 at Madison just last week.

 341.
On top of all of that, Braden’s time is good enough to qualify her for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. That will be held May 25-28 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and yes, there’s something very funny about the West regional being held a reasonable drive from the Mississippi River. Braden will have some pretty stiff competition at the Prelims, as Houston’s Kelly-Ann Beckford was leading the West side of things in qualifying at 2.00.70, and Braden’s time would land her with the 29th best time.

 342.
The reason why we can debate as to whether Braden had the most successful trip to VU is because she finished fourth in her race and Marquette did come home from the Championships with a pair of bronze medals. Natalia Jackowski finished third in the high jump, besting her personal record to clear 1.73 meters. Mila Puseljic was the third place finisher in the heptathlon, finishing top five in every event and posting personal bests in both the high jump at 1.57 meters and the 200 meters, finishing in 26.09 seconds.

 343.
There were a few other personal bests at the meet, as the MU men’s team finished sixth overall with 54 points and the women’s team came in seventh with 43.66 points. UConn ran away with both titles, winning the men’s side by more than 120 points and holding a nearly 70 point margin in the women’s event. Let’s run down those personal records:

 344.

 345.
Cole Donahe cleared 1.69 meters in the high jump and posted times of 11.57 seconds in the 100 meters and 17.58 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles on his way to a fifth place finish in the decathlon.

 346.
Kyle Forsberg reached 36.70 meters in the hammer throw.

 347.
Kaylee Hopp leapt 12.05 meters in the triple jump.

 348.
Haneefa Adam also set a PR in the triple jump, getting to 11.62 meters.

 349.
Julia Beck finished the 100 meter hurdles in 14.53 seconds.

 350.
Josh Pirogovsky hit 41.98 meters in the discus throw.

 374.
Marquette has an addition to its 2024 recruiting class in 7-footer Joshua Clark from Clements High School in Sugar Land, Texas.

Seems like the protypical Shaka Smart big man: long, athletic lob-catcher/ shot-blocker. #mubb
— Ben Steele (@BenSteeleMJS) May 10, 2024

 377.
 378.

 379.
Clark lists himself as a seven foot tall center in his Twitter bio, and his 247 Sports page expands that, declaring him to weigh 215 pounds. For those of you scoring at home, that would make him three inches taller and five pounds heavier than Al Amadou, although it remains to be seen how Amadou measures up next fall. Hailing from Sugar Land, Texas, he attends Clements High School, which is part of the Fort Bend school district in the southwest suburbs of Houston. That’s the extent of information available through his 247 page. He has no ratings or rankings, and there is not a single school listed as interested in him, either. A glance at the Media posts on his Twitter shows him with offers from UT Arlington and Sam Houston with the former coming in December 2023 and the latter coming in September 2022.

 380.
Max Preps is of service in learning a little bit about Clark. In 32 games with Clements’ varsity squad this past season, Clark averaged 9.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game. It appears that Clark’s tendency is towards being more of a traditional big man, as he attempted just three three-pointers all season, making one of them. He did all this on a Clements team that went 32-1 with a 16-0 record in district play and is ranked by Max Preps as the 11th best high school team in all of Texas. Clark led the team in rebounding and blocked shots and both by a pretty healthy amount, which is saying something when there’s not one but two chaps on the roster in the Houston area with the last name of Olajuwon.

 381.
I swear to Al McGuire, if Shaka Smart just screwed around and pulled in a springy athletic center who has been spending his free time taking tips from HAKEEM FREAKING OLAJUWON, I am going to scream and also demand that whoever brought Joshua Clark to the room gets a raise and also possibly a promotion, and whoever brought Clark to the coach’s attention gets a very nice gift basket.

 382.
Can I interest you in two-ish minutes of highlights from three months ago?

 383.

 384.
Here’s a three minute highlight reel from about six months ago. There’s at least one turnaround fadeaway jumper in the lane mixed in there, so we’ll see how long it is before Nevada Smith explains “never again” to him.

 385.

 386.
Let’s go to the brand new scholarship chart!

 387.

 388.
 389.

 390.
If nothing else, the addition of Clark ends any discussion of Marquette bringing in a transfer player this offseason. Clark takes up the 13th and final scholarship available to Shaka Smart, lining up next to Damarius Owens and Royce Parham as incoming freshmen next fall and Caedin Hamilton coming off a redshirt season in 2023-24. Given that Clark comes in about as unheralded as you can get and kind of late in the Class of 2024 process, I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to find out that Clark will take the same route as Hamilton did a year ago in relatively similar circumstances and redshirt for the 2024-25 season.
