63.
Connelly seems like a longshot while Eversley was among top candidates for GM job in 2020

Things are still mostly quiet as the Detroit Pistons look to hire a new president of basketball operations, but The Athletic has a batch of names that have emerged as “viable targets” for the president of basketball operations.

 64.
The top of the list is headlined by Tim Connelly, who The Athletic says the Pistons are “interested in making a run at” once the Minnesota Timberwolves’ season wraps up. Connelly has built a young and promising juggernaut in Minnesota, and regardless of how the season ends, Connelly is expected to opt out of his deal and seek a new contract.

 65.
A word of warning for Pistons fans — it is not just possible but perhaps even incredibly likely that Connelly would use Detroit’s desperation and deep pockets as leverage in seeking a new, long-term deal with the Timberwolves.

 66.
That being said, sometimes deep pockets do all the talking that is needed — ask Monty Williams. If Connelly is looking for a payday, he’d certainly get one in Detroit, and it’s unclear how comfortable Wolves’ owner Glen Taylor, who is also enmeshed in an ownership struggle, would be in paying top rate for a lead executive.

 67.
Again, it might be a pipe dream, but it is comforting that the Pistons are interested in going after one of the best in the game.

 68.
The other names on the list are also encouraging, should Connelly stick in Minnesota as is most likely to happen.

 69.
The Athletic mentions Trajan Langdon of New Orleans, Dennis Lindsey, a longtime Utah Jazz exec now with Dallas, and Marc Eversely in Chiago. Langdon has rocketed up the executive ranks relatively quickly since his NBA retirement in 2011. He started as a scout for the Spurs, became an assistant GM in Brooklyn in 2016 and then GM of the Pelicans in 2019. He is viewed as one of the sharpest minds in the NBA and a great meld of understanding the playing side and the asset management side of the game.

 70.
Lindsey had a decade-plus run with plenty of success in Utah before the team decided to hit the reset button by trading away its stars and rebuilding under the guidance of Danny Ainge.

 71.
Eversley was reportedly a finalist for the Pistons GM job in 2020 and, hey, if Pistons fans are desperate for this team to win 40 games, since becoming GM of the Bulls in 2020, Eversley has seen 31-, 46-, 40-, and 39-win seasons in the past four years.

 72.
The Athletic report also confirms previous reporting that the Milwaukee Bucks denied Detroit permission to speak to Jon Horst about the opening. The Athletic says that “it is possible that the Bucks were posturing to get assets from Detroit.” The story also says the Pisotns have “decided to move on to other candidates.”

 73.
This could be another bit of posturing, this time on the Pistons’ end, to make it look like it’s crossed off what seemed to be the top candidate on its list. Detroit could have legitimately moved on, of course, or it could be waiting for Milwaukee to drop its asking price to something easy to digest or to drop any compensation at all should Horst decide he’d really rather be elsewhere.

 74.
Speaking of potential posturing, Yahoo Sports reports that former Trail Blazers general manager, who was viewed as a candidate but more of a longshot for the president role in Detroit, “declined the Pistons’ outreach to interview for the role.”

 75.
That report also notes something interesting regarding Detroit’s contracted search firm, TurnkeyZRG, one of the top sports recruiting firms. Turnkey hired former Nets and Sixers GM Billy King in February, and he reportedly plays “an integral role in all basketball advisory services.”

 76.
Now, these search firms are more than teeing some up for “advisory services” and there is a ton of boots on the ground and shoe leather fact-gathering and reaching out to candidates. King might be the face of the basketball arm, but he’s not a lone voice.

 77.
What are we thinking about this list of candidates, Pistons fans?

 96.
 97.
It sucks, we know

The Detroit Pistons wrapped up the worst season in franchise history this year, and their reward for all that losing was a familiar sight. They dropped from the No. 1 slot in the lottery to the lowest possible spot they could — the No. 5 overall pick. It’s the second-straight year they’ve fallen from No. 1 to No. 5 and the third-straight year they’ve picked No. 5.

 98.
It sucks. Let’s unpack it.

 99.
1. One (safe for work) word to describe the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery, and why.

 100.
Sean Corp: Inevitable. Take that how you will. It was either a mathematical probability or a karmic certainty that the Pistons would not be rewarded for the past year of utter failure and mismanagement and be rewarded with anything but the faintest hope of staying put. Instead, it was likely, the would fall, and it was a coin flip on whether that fall would be to fifth or to somewhere slightly less depressing.

 101.
Lazarus Jackson: Unsurprising. This is the least surprised I have ever been at a draft result. Why would the Pistons get lucky this year? The NBA explicitly altered the lottery odds to discourage teams from losing 68 games, by design or by incompetence. The Pistons won 14 games, partially by design and partially because of incompetence, and got smacked by math for it.

 102.
Ben Gulker: Weavered. Like most things since he took over, this lottery went as poorly as possible.

 103.
Brady Fredericksen: Predictable. When I saw that the Hawks, Rockets and Spurs were in the top four, I knew they were picking fifth. It’s incredible, really, to do this three years in a row.

 104.
Wes Davenport: Bummer. But what other word could fit? Yes, they drafted 5th last year and the year before, but none of that matters. They have a 47% chance at picking 5th, and so they did. Bummer, bad luck, bites, earned, etc. Just don’t say it was unlikely.

 105.
Blake Silverman: Whatever. It happened, now go deal with it. No matter where the pick landed, you have to effectively evaluate talent or find a deal that makes the team better. Dropping as far as you could is unfortunate, and downright shocking it happened again, but the Pistons are still in a position to improve. They just have to the right decisions to do so.

 106.
Damon Allred: Unfortunate. I am not one to put on a tinfoil hat and draw connections where none are meant to be drawn. You won’t catch me saying the Pistons are cursed or anything similar. The Pistons landing at No. 5 had a 47.87% chance of happening, more or less heads or tails. It was an outcome that happened in a game of probabilities. It’s unfortunate for Detroit, but nothing more.

 107.

 108.
2. This draft seems like a complete crapshoot, but where do you want Detroit to go at #5?

 109.
Sean Corp: The Pistons have to grit their teeth and take the best player available, but they should have expansive thinking on who is in the running and what kind of skills equate to the best possible players. If you enter it with the idea that there are no stars and you are instead looking for the best complementary player, that opens up the aperture on what you are willing to evaluate. Don’t be fooled by athleticism that doesn’t equate to production or steady points in a weak league. This BPA approach also means the team must be willing to both evaluate trading the pick if another team sees real value at 5 and will pay for it or a willingness to trade a player on the current roster so that there is balance in skill and position among the young roster. If Donovan Clingan is the best player (and better than Duren), trade Duren. If Stephon Castle is the best player (and better than Ivey), trade Ivey.

 110.
Lazarus Jackson: The “nice” thing about getting the fifth pick is that now the path forward is clear — they gotta trade this pick. The return is gonna be ugly and no one’s gonna be happy about it, but it’s much easier to be clear-eyed about this pick not being to absolve the Pistons of their mistakes at 5 than it is at 1.

 111.
Ben Gulker: I honestly don’t know if it’s the temporary frustration of bad lottery luck or the years of futility and failure taking its toll, but I have been struggling to imagine a viable path out of the Pistons’ current mess that doesn’t involve a Cade Cunningham sign and trade. I want someone to convince me the fifth pick in this draft will make a lick of difference, because I don’t see it.

 112.
Brady Fredericksen: Trade it. There’s no one at No. 5 who is going to make this team any better in the immediacy. I’ve got a hunch the next POBO is not going to be able to walk in and slowly work through Troy Weaver’s mess. The next guy is here to win. He’s gotta make chicken bleep into chicken salad. Drafting Reed Sheppard, Dalton Knecht or Matas Buzelis — all of whom I like — is not going to do that anytime soon.

 113.
Wes Davenport: Depends on who’s there. Sarr is probably the only guarantee to be off the board so Risacher, Topic, Knecht, Sheppard, Buzelis, Castle, Clingan, and Salaun should all be in the discussion. In a perfect world, Risacher falls to 5. Realistically, Clingan or Knecht would be great fits.

 114.
Blake Silverman: The Pistons need to pick a player who can protect the rim or shoot the three. Ideally both, but that’s not easy to come by, especially now outside of Alex Sarr range.

 115.
Matas Buzelis is a good rim protector, although likely not a big, with shooting upside. Dalton Knecht spaces the floor. Donovan Clingan can answer some problems if he falls. Plus, Zaccharie Risacher can shoot and defend if he falls. For the sake of throwing in some additional names, I’ll give a couple sleepers at No. 5: Duke freshman Jared McCain and G League Ignite stretch big Tyler Smith. McCain is a small guard, but may be the best shooter in this class and can play both on or off the ball. He’s also a good rebounder for his size. Smith gives the Pistons a floor spacing big I think they’d really need. He can shoot it, but needs time to come along as a defender.

 116.
Both McCain and Smith may be a bit too rich at No. 5, but I like the fits.

 117.
Damon Allred: I said early on in the process in the DBB Slack channel that Zaccharie Risacher would likely be my pick if I was Detroit, whether the pick landed at No. 1 or No. 5. I think that’s still the case for me, mainly because of the play finishing he offers offensively, while being a long and mobile body defensively. Plus, he’s proven to be a winning player that makes good, connective choices at a high level of competition.

 118.

 119.
3. Has the Pistons’ failed rebuild and lottery misfortune shown that tanking is not a tenable strategy for NBA cellar dwellers these days?

 120.
Sean Corp: Tanking is only as good as the player evaluators you have on staff and the development personnel tasked with building up their skills. Color me moderately unimpressed with the former and majorly unimpressed with the latter among the Detroit Pistons brass. I don’t mind the selections of Ivey, Duren, and Thompson, but I’m not sure they have actually gotten any better in any meaningful way during their time in Detroit. Some of that is on them, but most of that is on the organization.

 121.
Lazarus Jackson: I would say yes. Or, at least, it shows that the level of bad / incompetent you can be as an organization has to be higher than it did before. You could get rescued from your own incompetence previously, and that option can’t be relied upon as hard, and so you have to forge your own way forward. Strategic roster badness can still be part of that, but you have to have a solid plan for ascending.

 122.
Ben Gulker: Acquiring foundational talent through the draft and supplementing through trades first and free agency second works. Orlando and Houston are doing it successfully right now. Sacramento, Indiana, OKC, Minnesota, Philly, Milwaukee, and even more playoff teams acquired stars and/or other key players through the draft (or traded drafted/swapped players). Not all those teams were tanking per se, but for the sake of brevity, where the Pistons have clearly, obviously failed is adding complementary talent to form a coherent roster after acquiring Cade Cunningham. Bottoming out and resetting made sense. Bottoming out for four consecutive years didn’t.

 123.
Brady Fredericksen: I’m probably in the minority here, but I kind of think the idea of tanking on tanking on tanking is dead. If you look at the top contenders in the playoffs right now, you’ll be hard pressed to find one who tanked their way to the bottom only to emerge at the top. The Wolves tanked at times, but they also just were run into the ground akin to the Pistons for years. The Knicks are built through free agency and trades. The Pacers are built through A-level scouting despite a lack of elite draft capital. The Nuggets are built around a generational late round pick and smart, win-now trades. Even Boston’s core was born from trades and Nets’ draft picks.

 124.
I think the NBA has effecitly made it impossible to crap your way to the top, unless you just nail pick after pick after pick. Only the Mavericks with Luka Doncic and the Cavaliers — with Darius Garland and Evan Mobley — are still alive with a core born out of (light) tanking.

 125.
I dunno, maybe actually trying to build a team and win games once you acquire a bunch of young guys matters? Shrug.

 126.
Wes Davenport: I guess don’t call it a failure yet for the Pistons, they do still have Cade and maybe some newfound competence leads them to the promised land. But in general, no. The Spurs just pulled it off last year to get Wemby. Next year there are 2 guys who could cause some tanking too — better odds. I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon as a strategy, but the hit rate will definitely fall. The better hope for killing tanking would be teams like the Nuggets and Pacers continuing to have big time success without ever having tanked.

 127.
Blake Silverman: It’s definitely shown that losing isn’t rewarded. Moreover, I think it’s shown how important it is to draft right and put together a complementary roster that fits the modern NBA. Sounds obvious, but it’s true.

 128.
Damon Allred: No, because all along the way, Troy Weaver has made tumultuous decisions and stunted prospect development through other choices, such as hiring Monty Williams, who bears little-to-no track record of developing high-level talent in recent memory.

 129.
—

 130.
Let us know your answers in the comments.

 131.
1. One (safe for work) word to describe the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery, and why.

 132.
2. This draft seems like a complete crapshoot but where do you want Detroit to go at #5?

 133.
3. Has the Pistons’ failed rebuild and lottery misfortune shown tanking is not a tenable strategy for NBA cellar dwellers?

 145.
The Big Question: Should the Pistons keep or trade the fifth pick in the NBA Draft?

 149.

 151.

 152.
 153.
There will be no bigger debate between now and the NBA Draft

There are so many reasons it is a bad idea for a rebuilding team to trade lottery picks. Young talent that is cost-controlled for 7-8 years, ensuring you are getting players on the upswing instead of the downswing, letting young players grow together and form real chemistry.

 154.
So why does it seem to make so much sense for the Detroit Pistons to trade this year’s draft pick? This year isn’t like any other year, and this sorry franchise is not like other sorry franchises you are used to.

 155.
The Case for Trading the Pick

 156.
This team has nine players born in the year 2000 or later. If most of them return, it is questionable if adding one more teenager to the mix makes much sense. This team is also desperate for competent two-way players. Of those nine millennium players, you can’t say with much confidence any of them are sure bets to be two-way impact players. They could all get there eventually, of course, but I’m not sure what I’d wager on Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and Cade Cunningham turning into plus defenders, and I’m not sure I’d bet on Quentin Grimes, Marcus Sasser, Isaiah Stewart, or Ausar Thompson to turn into reliable NBA scorers.

 157.
Another important ingredient in the Pistons making the right call on player evaluations at No. 5 is to have actual player evaluators in the organization. Right now, the team is in the midst of hiring a president of basketball operations, and all signs point to that person mostly cleaning house in the front office from Troy Weaver on down. That means a new president would either be relying on the evaluations of a lame-duck front office or taking a huge bet based on their own personal evaluations.

 158.
There is also the sense that not only is this draft bereft of true star upside players, but of the ample talents you will find among potential lottery selections, players who can shoot are not among them. It feels like if the Pistons keep the pick, they will be selecting among intriguing players that project as defenders with extremely iffy offensive games.

 159.
Detroit has been there before with selections such as Ausar Thompson last year, Killian Hayes and Isaiah Stewart in 2020, Sekou Doumbouya in 2019, and Stanley Johnson in 2015. I can see plenty of teams excited about the potential of Stephon Castle, Donovan Clingan, and Ron Holland, but I’m not sure the Pistons are in a position to be one of them.

 160.
Finally, there is the Cade Cunningham of it all. The Pistons have lost — a lot — since drafting Cunningham No. 1 overall in 2021. This franchise can’t afford much more losing. Sure, Cade is likely to sign a maximum contract extension. However, once he has his bag, nothing prevents him from asking out as early as the next day once the ink is dry.

 161.
This team is under pressure to get better and get better soon. Otherwise, they will start a brand new rebuild and use the assets they can get from a Cunningham trade to jump-start it.

 162.
The Case for Keeping the Pick

 163.
All of the above remains true. And yet ... trading away the pick could be throwing away good money after bad. The Pistons can’t act like anything but a young, bad, rebuilding team. Bad previous decisions shouldn’t dictate that they make bad current decisions.

 164.
There are real questions about the actual value of the fifth overall pick in an NBA Draft with so few sure bets. On the hand, the value could be seriously depressed because no other teams see players with high upside. On the other hand, all it takes is one team who convinces themselves that Player X will be THAT dude and it’s great fortune they’ve fallen to fifth, and they are willing to pay to take the big swing.

 165.
If the Pistons can’t get high value for the No. 5 overall pick then they should make the selection. The Pistons need to get better, and they need to be willing to put everything on the table, from this pick to current players, but that doesn’t mean everything must go. It only means everything should be an option.

 166.
The Pistons have $60 million in cap space. This team can get better in free agency and doesn’t necessarily have to rely solely on the draft to put a much better team around Cade Cunningham. If the Pistons new front office (I’m willing a great new POBO into existence in this scenario) sees a player they like at No. 5, they should be willing to stay there and pick him.

 167.
Moreso, if they see a player at No. 5 that is direct conflict with the position or skillset of a player on the current roster, they should pick them anyway. If things aren’t working now and you think a defensive anchor like Donovan Clingan works at center better than an offensive player like Duren, then trade Duren.

 168.
If you believe in Stephon Castle’s defense on day 1 and believe he could develop a true offensive game by Year 2, then you take Castle.

 169.
This also might be the season the Pistons should take stock of what has worked and what hasn’t about their drafting in previous years. This team that is desperate for complementary players could certainly find a complement even if the pick isn’t sexy or is viewed as controversial. Is that Reed Sheppard at 5? Dalton Knecht? Cody Williams? Tidjane Saluan? Kyle Filipowksi?

 170.
If the Detroit Pistons can walk away from this offseason with veterans who can serve as capable starters and a young roster continuing to develop off the bench, isn’t that close to a best-case scenario?

 171.
Call it the Houston Rockets plan. They signed players to huge deals as free agents, built a .500 team, put their young guys in roles that played to their strengths, and were just rewarded with the third overall pick (via trade, but it still required the team with the ninth-best odds to jump up to the top 4).

 172.
So what do you want the Pistons to do with their draft pick? Keep it or trade it?

 190.

 191.
 192.
Who will join Jaden Ivey and Ausar Thompson in the fifth overall club?

It always felt inevitable. The Detroit Pistons, coming off the worst record in the NBA and worst season in franchise history, will be picking fifth overall after falling four spots in the 2024 NBA Draft Lottery.

 193.
Fate (or math) decreed this seemingly cursed team would not be awarded any lottery luck and would instead fall to fifth overall — their most likely individual landing spot, statistically speaking.

 194.
What’s the downside of picking fifth overall in an extremely unsettled NBA Draft with few players that have star upside? Well, if there are only a few stars available, they could obviously be picked ahead of No. 5.

 195.
What’s the upside of picking fifth overall in an extremely unsettled NBA Draft? There is no saying that the player the Pistons pick at 5 (if they pick) will not end up being better than the four players selected ahead of him.

 196.
Here is a sneak preview of what I just submitted for an upcoming DBB on 3 piece, and I am dropping it early because it’s where my head is at right now:

 197.

The Pistons have to grit their teeth and take the best player available, but they should have expansive thinking on who is in the running and what kind of skills equate to the best possible players.

 198.
The official draft order will be: Atlanta Hawks (jumping from the 10th best odds all the way to first overall), Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets (via Brooklyn), San Antonio Spurs, and Pistons.

 199.
There are several questions for the Pistons heading into the draft above and beyond the player they should pick at the slot. There is also a question of who will be making the pick. Detroit is hiring a president of basketball operations, and that person will have the ultimate say in the selection. There is also a question of whether that person will hire a new GM or retain incumbent Troy Weaver and let him have any additional influence on the draft process.

 200.
There is anticipation the hire will be made before the NBA Draft on June 26, but that new president will be relying on data acquired by the current regime, unless that person is hired away from another team and can rely on data his former employer collected.

 201.
There is also the strong potential that the Pistons will trade the fifth overall pick as they try to dig themselves out of a sizeable hole they’ve created for themselves. If the Pistons want a true second banana (if not second star) next to Cade Cunningham as early as possible, it could require packaging the pick as well as an assemblage of young players that could include Jaden Ivey, Ausar Thompson (both picked by the team at fifth overall in the last two draft) or Jalen Duren.

 202.
Pain, misery, and young talent. Your Detroit Pistons. The more things change, the more things stay the same.

 223.
How to watch the NBA Draft Lottery and the NBA Lottery odds

The NBA Draft Lottery is dropping on Sunday, May 12. The Detroit Pistons, as has been their habit for several years, have the top odds of landing the No. 1 overall pick. They can also drop as low as the fifth overall selection. In fact, if you’re a fan of math, dropping to five is the most likely scenario.

 224.
Let’s get to the specifics on how and when to watch the Draft Lottery, and then we will talk some more about how the lottery could impact the Pistons’ plans.

 225.
How to Watch the NBA Draft Lottery

 226.
When: Sunday, May 12
Time: 3 p.m. ET
Where: United Center, Chicago, Illinois
Watch: ABC

 227.
This year, the Pistons will be represented by Asuar Thompson, Detroit’s pick in last year’s draft when they fell to No. 5 after the NBA Draft Lottery. While it was a gut punch to fall to fifth in the same year that Victor Wembanyama was a sure bet to go No. 1 overall, this year there are no clear top candidates for the first overall selection.

 228.
NBA Draft Lottery Odds

 229.
Detroit Pistons

 230.
Odds to get No. 1 pick: 14%
Odds to get top-2 pick: 27.4%
Odds to get top-3 pick: 40.1%
Odds to get top-4 pick: 52.1%
Odds to get fifth pick: 47.9%

 231.
Other No. 1 pick odds

 232.
Washington Wizards: 14%
Charlotte Hornets: 14%
Portland Trail Blazers: 13.2%
San Antonio Spurs: 10.5%
Toronto Raptors: 9%
Memphis Grizzlies: 7.5%
Utah Jazz: 6%
Brooklyn Nets: 4.5%
Atlanta Hawks: 3%
Chicago Bulls: 2%
Houston Rockets: 1.5%
Sacramento Kings: 0.8%
Golden State Warriors: 0.7%

 233.
What should the Detroit Pistons do?

 234.
This year, the NBA Draft lacks not just star power but maybe even starter power. There will be some players that pop from this draft, as there always are, but most teams appear to be going into this draft cycle thinking about rotational depth more than they are thinking about difference makers.

 235.
When you’re a team like the Detroit Pistons, which is loaded with young players needing playing time and needing to improve, the big question becomes what should Detroit do at each of their potential landing spots—take a player or trade the pick?

 236.
And do the odds go up or down the further you slide down the draft board? The top overall picks are guaranteed a sizeable chunk of money — that’s great when you are potential stars that could be playing on a discount for years. That’s less ideal when you think the ceiling for a player is a sixth or seventh man in a rotation.

 237.
Does Detroit stick at No. 1 and draft Alex Sarr? That would likely mean trading incumbent big man Jalen Duren. The same could be said regarding Jaden Ivey if they had their sights set on a player like Nikola Topic, Reed Sheppard, or Stephon Castle at No. 1.

 238.
If they slide a bit further down, do they try to add a shooting wing they have been so desperate for in Zaccharie Risacher, Dalton Knecht or Matas Buzelis? Do they simply take best player available, despite offensive limitations, like a Ron Holland or a Cody Williams?

 239.
Or should they be trading the pick to the highest bidder no matter what in an attempt to either get a clear starter-level talent or aggregate the pick along with an Ivey and/or a Duren, and what level starter will that even net you these days?

 240.
There are no easy decisions for the Pistons, and the folks doing all the draft evaluations might not even be employed by the franchise one month from now. But, hey, I’ll be watching the lottery. And can’t wait to see Detroit’s logo pop up at the No. 5 overall pick.

 241.
The saving grace, I suppose, is that any team, including the Pistons, could be picking at five and still get the first or second player on their big board.

 253.
Report: Pistons denied permission to talk to Bucks GM Jon Horst for vacant prez role

 261.
Horst, a Michigan native, would have broad powers overseeing all basketball operations in Detroit

Things have been quiet on the Detroit Pistons’ search for a new president of basketball operations. That is partially due to the designated search firm doing a lot of work behind the scenes and some of the prospective candidates for the role were still in the playoffs.

 262.
The Milwaukee Bucks were unceremoniously eliminated in round one, and Jon Horst, their GM since 2017, is thought to be the leading candidate for the Pistons. While that might be the case, a new report indicates that the team has denied Detroit permission to talk to Horst about the president role.

 263.
Horst, a Michigan native, got his start in the executive suite as a member of the Pistons in the early 2000s. It would provide a job with expanded powers and be a homecoming personally and professionally.

 264.
The report on the Bucks’ denial comes from longtime Wisconsin-based sports reporter Gary Woelfel. He posted:

 267.
Barring an unexpected development, Jon Horst will remain the Bucks general manager.
Sources told me the Detroit Pistons have been denied permission to talk to Horst about their newly created president of basketball operations position.
Sources said Horst has had more than a…
— Gery Woelfel (@GeryWoelfel) May 11, 2024

 271.

 272.
“Barring an unexpected development, Jon Horst will remain the Bucks general manager.

 273.
“Sources told me the Detroit Pistons have been denied permission to talk to Horst about their newly created president of basketball operations position.

 274.
“Sources said Horst has had more than a passing interest in the Pistons job.

 275.
“Horst is a native of Sandusky, Mich. who worked for the Pistons before joining the Bucks in 2008. He has been the Bucks GM since 2017.”

 276.
We can unpack the message in a bit, but we also have to do a bit of introspection on the messenger. Woelfel likely does have sources within the Bucks, so I don’t want to dismiss any of this out of hand. But he’s also not a regular reporter for the Bucks and hasn’t been for several years. He’s also prone to have gotten some things wrong in the past. You can search his name on Reddit or ask our friends over at Brew Hoop what they think of Woelfel’s reporting chops.

 277.
Now, let’s get to the actual report. Yes, the Pistons definitely did need to ask permission to speak to Horst about the position because Horst is under contract for two more seasons following this one, according to The Athletic. Typically, you don’t deny permission for a job that would ostensibly be a promotion, but I guess the line between president and general manager is fuzzy enough that it gives the Bucks the ability to say no.

 278.
I also find it interesting that Woelfel’s report explicitly states, “Horst has had more than a passing interest in the Pistons job.”

 279.
It makes sense that Horst might be looking for a new gig. The Bucks are old and getting older. There were also previous reports of Horst’s influence waning in the face of a superstar who threw his weight around Adrian Griffin over Horst’s preferred Nick Nurse as a Mike Budenholzer replacement and then got overruled again as he preferred Kenny Atkinson as a Griffin replacement but instead went with Doc Rivers, another personality unafraid to throw his weight around.

 280.
It’s great to be the GM who built a contending team around Giannis and delivered a championship. Less desirable is being the captain of a sinking ship and facing the prospect of potentially owning a trade of Giannis to a contender (though I think everyone hopes he is a lifer in Milwaukee).

 281.
If the Pistons are forced to move on from a potential Horst pursuit, the other candidates who have been mentioned are not bereft of experience. We have heard names like Dennis Lindsey, formerly of the Utah Jazz, Tim Connelly, should he opt out of his Minnesota Timberwolves contract amid ownership drama, Scott Perry, a man with Pistons connections most recently with the New York Knicks, and JJ Redick, who looks interested in jumping ship from ace media personality into either a coach or executive role in the NBA.
