66.
Depending on which excursion you book, former NFL player Bobby Massie may even be your personal chef.

 67.

Long before former NFL offensive tackle Bobby Massie was added to the Denver Broncos roster, he and wife, Angel, visited Colorado to enjoy the great outdoors. During football bye weeks, the couple often hired a guide to help them explore the state’s best and unsung fly-fishing waters.

 68.
While the scenery always wowed them, the guiding services did not. Sometimes it was little things, like lackluster bologna sandwiches provided as a catered lunch. Other times, the Massies felt ostracized because of their race. One guide, for example, seemed overtly shocked the couple was Black when they arrived for their excursion, Angel recalled. On another trip, their guide barely made conversation.

 69.
Those experiences inspired the Massies to start Wanderland Outdoors, an outfitter focused on creating culturally competent excursions where people of color feel welcomed and represented.

 70.
Initially, that wasn’t the mission: The Massies simply wanted to create a company that delivered exceptional customer service to pair with Colorado’s exceptional views. But they quickly realized there was a need to create space and job opportunities for folks typically underrepresented in the outdoors.

 71.
“The outdoors has no color ‘til the fall, when the leaves start changing and the grass starts turning brown. But the outdoors is for everyone,” said Bobby, an avid fisherman and hunter. “Some people try to make you feel left out when you shouldn’t.”

 72.
In its inaugural season, Wanderland Outdoors will offer four different excursions, from fly fishing in Rocky Mountain National Park to horseback riding at Brown Family Ranch in Longmont to guided hikes throughout the Front Range – all led by BIPOC men and women.

 73.
RELATED: A life from the land: Ranchers of color, now and in the past, make marks in Colorado

 74.
“That’s something we wanted to highlight because there’s a lot of great outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen in this community and a lot of them don’t get the attention that they should,” Bobby said.

 75.
“We wanted to uplift them in a way where not only can they participate in the outdoor industry, but they also are able to connect with our clients and guests who may not necessarily feel comfortable being in the outdoors because of the history of inequity when it comes to this particular subject,” Angel added.

 76.
The Massies say the key to creating memorable experiences is even more basic than the destination — it’s the company.

 77.
“One thing about fishing, you can’t make the fish bite and you can’t make the sun shine, so while you’re spending that block of time with these people, at least the conversation can be enjoyable,” Bobby said. “That was our mindset in choosing the guides.”

 78.
Depending on which excursion you book, the Massies may also be personally involved. Angel plans to lead mindful hikes along the Front Range featuring guided breathwork, meditation and journaling. Each one culminates with a tea ceremony by the fire.

 80.
During her time working as a journalist on the East Coast, Angel hosted similar events for groups of young, professional women. But it wasn’t until the pandemic that she integrated mindfulness techniques such as yoga and meditation into her daily life. In 2022, she achieved a Mindful Outdoor Guide certification from Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, and now she aims to share the catharsis she feels from nature with others.

 81.
“We wanted people to have a taste of Colorado and add in the mindfulness piece,” Angel said. “That has become a big part of our lives and how we heal.”

 82.
Those looking for a literal taste of the outdoors can book a Food x Fire experience with Chef Bobby Massie at the helm. Bobby plans to infuse his heritage into the menu by cooking soul food with local ingredients over an open fire. In June, the menu will spotlight seafood with dishes such as smoked rainbow trout mezze, grilled snapper bites and tiger prawns, alongside items like smothered green beans, brown butter dirty rice and bourbon maple pears with brown sugar crumble. All the herbs will come from the Massies’ home garden in Larkspur.

 83.
Bobby loved cooking from a young age in part because of his grandma, who owned a restaurant. Making a meal over an open fire ignites the senses, he said.

 84.
“It adds an element of flavor to the food, from your visual senses seeing it prepared, you smelling the wood burning and feeling the heat of the smoke,” Bobby said.

 131.
Wanderland Outdoors excursions are priced by length – half-day or full-day – and can be customized depending on preference. For example, the Massies partnered with RareWater to curate fly fishing trips to gold-medal waters on privately owned land. They also partnered with hotels to offer discounts to folks who want to book multi-day trips. As for catering, don’t expect bologna sandwiches. The couple works with Castle Rock-based Salt Craft Meat Market to provide charcuterie and lunches for some excursions.

 132.
In its first year, Wanderland Outdoors will host guided trips from May to October in Colorado, and the Massies to hope to add more activities like hunting in the future. Eventually, they want to expand into states with warmer climates, too.

 159.

The Broncos’ full 2024 schedule was released Wednesday. The Post’s sports staff took the occasion to forecast how Sean Payton’s second season in Denver will play out.

 160.
Parker Gabriel, Broncos reporter

 161.
Record: 6-11

 162.
Is it super early for this exercise? Of course it is. Will that stop us? Not today. Not now that we know what Denver’s schedule looks like. Nobody would enjoy a 6-11 season. But if you get some promising play out of rookie quarterback Bo Nix and burn off $53 million of Russell Wilson’s dead money along the way, it won’t be for nothing. One word of advice, though: Make sure that Week 2 game against Wilson and Pittsburgh at Empower Field is among the six rather than the 11.

 163.
Ryan McFadden, Broncos reporter

 164.
Record: 7-10

 165.
There’s not a lot of high expectations for Denver at the moment. And that two-week stretch against Baltimore and Kansas City will be brutal. The best thing the Broncos could hope for in 2024 is that Nix shows signs that he can be a franchise quarterback, wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. becomes a reliable threat and outside linebacker Nik Bonitto makes a leap in Year 3.

 166.
Troy Renck, sports columnist

 167.
Record: 6-11

 168.
The Broncos are in transition, a fact painfully obvious when looking for victories on the schedule. A 1-4 start is possible, but Bo Nix will gain traction, winning five of his final 12 games. A 6-11 record will sting — wins vs the Steelers, Jets and Saints would provide soothing balm for the pain — but if Nix looks like the answer at quarterback the season will be a success.

 218.
Who are we kidding? It’s all about Week 2, about paying Russell Wilson back for the hunk of flesh he’s chomped out of the 2024 salary cap. The difficulty level cranks up after Halloween, but Weeks 1-8 offer the chance to get a little autumn wind at your young signal-callers’ backs. Sean Payton’s never lost more than nine games in a season. Over the last two years, the six teams that gave rookie QBs the most snaps averaged 9.2 losses. This fall’s a success not so much if you actually beat Mahomes and Herbert, but if you finally find one of your own.

 242.
The Broncos’ 2024 schedule has been released.

 243.

The Broncos’ 2024 schedule has been released.

 244.
In Sean Payton’s second season in Denver and first with rookie quarterback Bo Nix, the Broncos will play three of their first four games on the road, with a matchup against a familiar face sandwiched in between.

 245.
The Broncos will also have to wait until Week 14 for a break after taking their bye week in Week 9 of last year.

 246.
With the season opener four months away, here are some things to watch out for in 2024.

 247.
Must-watch game: vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (Week 2)

 248.
This game became a must-watch as soon as former Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson signed with the Steelers. Wilson will come back to the Mile High City less than a year after Payton benched him for the final two games of the regular season. Whether or not Wilson has animosity about how his time in Denver ended, he has a chance to exact a little revenge.

 249.
Payton didn’t believe his partnership with Wilson would work, leading to the team cutting ties with the nine-time Pro Bowler, absorbing $53 million in dead cap money in 2024, and drafting Nix in the first round of the NFL draft. Wilson has an opportunity to march into Empower Field at Mile High and beat his former coach, who thought he wasn’t enough to provide an offensive spark. At the same time, Payton could show that Wilson was the problem and he was right all along. Denver should hope for the latter because a loss to Pittsburgh at home might sting worse than getting beat by the Jets last season.

 250.
Least-intriguing game: vs. Carolina Panthers (Week 8)

 251.
This one might not have fans running to their television screens. Both teams have struggled since squaring off in Super Bowl 50. The Panthers have had one winning season since 2016. Denver has had seven straight seasons with a losing record.

 252.
Maybe the matchup between Nix and Bryce Young might add some interest. However, Young is coming off an underwhelming rookie campaign, totaling 2,877 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

 253.
Best team: Kansas City Chiefs

 254.
Even with the Baltimore Ravens on the schedule, the Chiefs remain the biggest hurdle. Kansas City has won two straight Super Bowls and three in the last five seasons.

 255.
Patrick Mahomes remains the best quarterback in the sport. The Chiefs added speed to their offense, signing Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and drafting Texas wideout Xavier Worthy, who ran the 40 in 4.21 seconds at the NFL scouting combine. And even though the Chiefs traded cornerback L’Jarius Sneed to the Tennessee Titans, their defense will still be a problem.

 256.
Yes, the Ravens had the best record in the AFC last season. But they lost three starting offensive linemen, and former defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald is now the head coach for the Seattle Seahawks.

 257.
Worst team: Panthers

 258.
Carolina had the worst record in the league last season at 2-15. Even with the additions of wide receiver Diontae Johnson, right guard Robert Hunt and edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, the Panthers still have a long way to go under new head coach Dave Canales.

 259.
Best matchup: Payton vs. New Orleans (Week 7)

 306.
It’s only right that Payton’s return to New Orleans gets the prime-time treatment. On Thursday Night Football, the Broncos will face the Saints inside the Superdome, where Payton led one of the league’s best offenses for 15 seasons. The emotions are expected to be high among the Saints fan base since Payton represents the franchise’s glory days, including their lone Super Bowl victory in 2010.

 307.
Toughest stretch: Weeks 9-10

 308.
Facing two MVPs inside two hostile environments in back-to-back weeks isn’t a great recipe for success.

 309.
The Broncos will have a stretch where they will face the reigning MVP Lamar Jackson and All-Pro running back Derrick Henry in Baltimore in Week 9 before taking on Mahomes at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 10. Both teams are expected to enter the season as Super Bowl contenders, meaning this will be a big test for Nix and the rest of the young players on the roster.

 350.
The Broncos open at Seattle, play at Baltimore and Kansas City back-to-back and have a Week 14 bye. Denver's entire 2024 schedule is here.

 351.

WEEK 1

 352.
AT SEATTLE SEAHAWKS

 353.
2:05 p.m., Sept. 8, CBS

 354.
Away we go. This doesn’t have quite as much juice now that Russell Wilson is no longer in Denver, but it’s still an interesting way to start the season. The Broncos go on the road and get a first-time head coach making his debut in Seattle’s Mike Macdonald. He’s the NFL’s new defensive poster boy. Perhaps it’ll be new coach vs. rookie quarterback in Bo Nix.

 355.
WEEK 2

 356.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS

 357.
2:25 p.m., Sept. 15, CBS

 358.
The Broncos’ home opener is a big one, as Russell Wilson returns to Empower Field. Wilson is making $1.2 million from the Steelers this year and $37.8 million from the Broncos. Imagine if he’s got the ball late in the game with a chance to go down the field and win. You’ll be able to cut the tension in the building with a spoon.

 359.
WEEK 3

 360.
AT TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

 361.
11 a.m., Sept. 22, FOX

 362.
For the second straight year, the Broncos go to Florida in late September. Wouldn’t it be something if Baker Mayfield and the Bucs dropped 70 points like Miami did last year? More likely than that: Denver will find a way to stay out East for the week following this game because the next one is up the seaboard.

 363.
WEEK 4

 364.
AT NEW YORK JETS

 365.
11 a.m., Sept. 29, CBS

 366.
The Broncos pay a visit to Nathaniel Hackett, Aaron Rodgers and the Jets. It’s the third season in a row these teams have met. What would make this one spicy is if Zach Wilson is starting at quarterback for Payton. Last year the Jets averaged 269 yards per game but had 407 against Vance Joseph’s defense.

 367.
WEEK 5

 368.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

 369.
2:05 p.m., Oct. 6, FOX

 370.
The Broncos have lost eight games in a row to the Raiders despite the fact that Las Vegas has made the playoffs only once in the past four seasons. In fact, a quarter of the Raiders’ wins the past four years have come against Denver. Here’s the first chance of the season for the Broncos to end the misery.

 371.
WEEK 6

 372.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

 418.

 419.
2:05 p.m., Oct. 13, CBS

 420.
Back-to-back division home games represent a chance to make a move regardless of how the first four weeks go. This will also be the reintroduction to Jim Harbaugh, the new coach of the Chargers who was a strong candidate for Denver’s job in early 2023. Oh, and potentially a matchup of former Oregon quarterbacks in L.A.’s Justin Herbert and Denver’s Nix.

 421.
WEEK 7

 422.
AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS

 423.
6:15 p.m., Oct. 17 (Thursday Night Football), Amazon Prime

 424.
Sean Payton’s return to New Orleans, where he spent 16 years, comes in primetime. Even better for him: A short week of preparation meaning less time to get asked questions about the big event. It’s not just a reunion for Payton, either. The Broncos are littered with former New Orleans staffers and players. Think they know how to use the visiting side amenities at the Superdome?

 425.
WEEK 8

 426.
CAROLINA PANTHERS

 427.
2:25 p.m., Oct. 27, CBS

 428.
Several familiar faces in this one, including former Denver defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and inside linebacker Josey Jewell. The Panthers will be trying to take a step forward under new head coach Dave Canelas and second-year quarterback Bryce Young.

 429.
WEEK 9

 430.
AT BALTIMORE RAVENS

 431.
11 a.m, Nov. 3, CBS

 432.
Denver makes the trip to Baltimore for the second time in three seasons to face Lamar Jackson and the powerhouse that John Harbaugh’s built. One of three games on the schedule against a Harbaugh, as a matter of fact. The Ravens have had to retool their defensive coaching staff, but they figure to be powerful on both sides of the ball yet again.

 433.
WEEK 10

 434.
AT KANSAS CITY

 435.
11 a.m., Nov. 10, CBS

 436.
Find a tougher back-to-back set of road games in the NFL than this one. It’ll be a monumental task. The Broncos ended their long losing streak against the Chiefs last year but still haven’t won at Arrowhead Stadium since 2015. Denver allowed just one offensive touchdown to Kansas City in two games last year. That’s about as good as you can do it.

 437.
WEEK 11

 438.
ATLANTA FALCONS

 439.
2:05 p.m., Nov. 17, FOX

 440.
Will it be Kirk Cousins or rookie Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback? That’s a joke. Well, mostly. The Falcons have a bunch of exciting offensive pieces and a first-year head coach in Raheem Morris. Coming off a brutal road double, this is one the Broncos will need. It also shapes up to be the Elliss Bowl, with Denver’s rookie Jonah Elliss squaring off against his older brother, Falcons linebacker Christian Elliss.

 441.
WEEK 12

 442.
AT LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

 443.
2:05 p.m., Nov. 24, CBS

 444.
A stretch of three road games in four weeks near the tail end of a long haul is nothing to sneeze at. Especially considering the Broncos’ hapless ways against the Raiders in recent years. Who will be playing quarterback for each team by the time this game rolls around? And will the Broncos go into Thanksgiving week thankful they grabbed Nix one spot before Las Vegas in the draft?

 445.
WEEK 13

 446.
CLEVELAND BROWNS

 447.
6:15 p.m., Dec. 2 (Monday Night Football), ESPN

 448.
A primetime game for now, though one could imagine it being a flex candidate if one or both of these teams is not playing well by the time December rolls around. Perhaps the Broncos’ best performance of 2023 was a powerful outing against the Browns at home. They’ll get a chance to reprise the good vibes.

 449.
WEEK 14

 450.
BYE

 451.
About as late as the bye week gets for the Broncos. Denver had better rest up after that Week 7 Thursday night game.

 452.
WEEK 15

 453.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

 454.
2:25 p.m., Dec. 15, CBS

 455.
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson got off to a promising start as a rookie but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He should be back in the saddle, setting up a potential battle of young quarterbacks. The Colts also visited Denver in 2022 and won one of the ugliest games you’ll ever see, 12-9 in overtime.

 456.
WEEK 16

 457.
AT LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

 458.
2:05 p.m., Dec. 22, FOX

 459.
The Broncos dodged playing Christmas Day, but will head on the road on either side of the holiday. It starts with a trip west to face off against the Fighting Harbaughs. Denver’s beat the Chargers late in the season each of the past two years.

 460.
WEEK 17

 461.
AT CINCINNATI BENGALS

 462.
TBD, Dec. 28-29

 463.
Joe Burrow’s missed time over the past couple of years, but the Broncos are slated to face another of the NFL’s best quarterbacks. Denver hasn’t played in Cincinnati since 2018. If Burrow’s healthy, the Bengals should be hot in pursuit of playoff positioning.

 464.
WEEK 18

 465.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

 466.
TBD, Jan. 4-5

 467.
The Broncos ring in 2025 and send out the regular season with a home game against the Chiefs. The great thing about the NFL season is you never know what’s going to happen. Is there a chance Denver’s playing for something? Or that Mahomes and company haven’t wrapped up a ninth straight division crown by this point? Sure. Does it seem likely? That’s another story entirely.

 487.

The Broncos are setting up a punting competition this offseason.

 488.
Denver on Wednesday signed free agent Trenton Gill, the team announced. Gill spent the past two seasons as Chicago’s punter but was waived after the Bears drafted Tory Taylor in the fourth round last month.

 489.
Gill had a tryout with Denver on Wednesday, a source said, and the team moved promptly to sign him.

 490.
Gill should provide real competition for Riley Dixon, who punted in all 17 games for Denver last year.

 491.
Gill checked in slightly behind Dixon last year in yards per punt (46.3 to 46.1) and well behind in net yards per punt (41.5 yards to 38). Dixon also had better numbers in terms of avoiding touchbacks and putting punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.

 562.

Broncos fans can buy single-game tickets shortly after finding out who the team plays and when.

 563.
The NFL is set to announce its entire schedule at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the Broncos will be putting a limited number of single-game tickets up for sale shortly thereafter via Ticketmaster.

 564.
Denver is making full-price tickets, starting at $37 and limited to four per household, available, the club said in a Tuesday news release. There will also be limited numbers of ADA seats and a few club-level seats in the East and West United Club Levels available for purchase.

 565.
The Broncos have sold out 419 consecutive home games since 1970. The club announced earlier this year that the average price of a season ticket increased by about 7.9% from 2023 after a larger increase following the 2022 season.

 566.
Later in the summer the club will also release a limited number of half-priced tickets as part of its operating agreement with the Metropolitan Football Stadium District.

 638.

Broncos third-round draft pick Jonah Elliss on Tuesday signed his four-year rookie contract, the team announced.

 639.
Elliss, the No. 76 overall pick, is the sixth of Denver’s seven draft picks to get his deal done. It is slated to be worth $5.87 million and comes with a $1.09 million signing bonus.

 640.
Elliss, 21, had a terrific junior season at Utah, racking up 12 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 10 games. A shoulder injury cost him the end of the season and kept him limited during last weekend’s rookie minicamp in Denver, but the Broncos expect him to be fully healthy by the end of this month.

 641.
Even with a bit of a ramp up, Denver coach Sean Payton had a favorable first impression during rookie minicamp.

 642.
“Good. Really good,” Payton said. “… It’s hard for him to finish rushing the passer in some of these drills, but he has good football makeup. He’s tough.”

 691.
Elliss’ father, Luther, was a long-time defensive tackle for the Detroit Lions and finished his playing career in Denver in 2004. 747.
In this week's Broncos Mailbag, questions range from surprise cut or trade candidates this summer to rookies who could make an impact to weighing the possibility of a Justin Simmons return.

 748.

Denver Post Broncos writer Parker Gabriel posts his Broncos Mailbag weekly during the season and periodically during the offseason. Click here to submit a question.

 749.
In your estimation, which Broncos, if any, are the most vulnerable to being cut or traded from now until training camp?

 750.
– Ed Helinski, Auburn, New York

 751.
Hey Ed, good question. The starting point is you’re looking for players who have little to no guaranteed money on their contracts. Those are the easiest to move on from via cut or trade. Obviously, there’s likely to be more talk about Courtland Sutton and Garett Bolles over the coming weeks and months, though at the moment a trade of either seems unlikely.

 752.
Sutton’s not participating in the voluntary portion of offseason workouts and wants more guaranteed money on his contract — only $2 million of the two years and $26.5 million remaining on his deal is guaranteed — but it’s hard to see why the Broncos will be motivated to give it to him. Bolles is entering the final year of his contract and will turn 32 in a couple of weeks, though general manager George Paton said in March that Bolles, “still moves like he’s 25.”

 753.
Things change fast in the NFL, but as we sit here today, they look like a pair of veteran players at key positions who can help the Broncos this year and might help ease the transition to the NFL for a rookie quarterback like Bo Nix. At the same time, though, Denver’s actions so far suggest they’re not inclined to race to commit to either long-term.

 754.
The fact that they didn’t cut or trade either earlier in the offseason when they cut Justin Simmons and traded Jerry Jeudy makes it seem as though they’ll be here for 2024. You just never know when a good deal might come around.

 755.
Other than that, what you’re looking at is a bunch of veteran-ish types with low salaries who will have to beat out younger players. Just a sampling of those who don’t have any guaranteed money and might have to fight to make the roster: RBs Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine, P Riley Dixon, CB Tremon Smith and WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

 756.
Now, will much of that happen before training camp starts? It depends some on if Denver makes any further free agency moves or likes a player who gets cut elsewhere around the league. Mostly, this is probably more training camp competition. But there’s always at least a little summer movement.

 757.
Hello from Finland!

 758.
So I was wondering, could there be a special connection between Bo Nix and Greg Dulcich with “Hoss Juke” — play? It’s said to be Nix’s favorite play and some dudes named Brady and Gronk made it special. Parker, are you excited to see how that play will turn out? Or would you rather see some other TE connecting with Nix? Are there some other plays you can’t wait to see? A Flea Flicker maybe?

 759.
– Jude, Lahti, Finland

 760.
Jude! Appreciate you writing in, as always. It’s a good thought and it’s the type of stuff the Broncos have the personnel to do if Greg Dulcich is healthy. Payton and the coaching staff downplayed Dulcich’s absence last year when he first got hurt, but watching training camp it was clear they had designs on him having a big role in the offense. And it makes sense, too. Tight ends have always produced under Payton and last year Denver ended up with about as little production as you could imagine from the position.

 761.
You know Payton and Nix — assuming he’s the one playing — are going to want a guy who can make plays up the seam. You’d think that’s Dulcich if he’s healthy or maybe Lucas Krull. One interesting element will be some of Denver’s bigger receivers like Tim Patrick and rookie Devaughn Vele. Payton’s already spoken highly of Vele’s ability in high-traffic areas and Patrick’s no stranger to it, either.

 762.
As for other plays, the one that jumps to mind is specific to this year: The kickoff. It’s going to be really interesting to see how teams handle it. The play is different for returners and coverage units, sure, but also for kickers. They’ll have to expand their repertoire to hit knuckleballs, line drives and all manner of other kicks. But you also have to carry the ball to at least the 20-yard line or it comes out to the 40 like a kick out of bounds. So it’ll be a fully reimagined part of the game and it’s going to be all trial and error through the preseason and early stages of the regular season.

 763.
It is early and there is a lot of time before the Broncos actually kick off for the first game. With that said, if you had a crystal ball, who would pick as the rookie of the year for the Broncos? Who would be the Broncos MVP? And most importantly, what is your educated wild guess on the wins and losses?

 764.
– Del, Lamar

 765.
Oh, man, Del, you’re right that it’s early. Way too early for actual, educated guesses on this stuff. Obviously, Nix is going to dominate the conversation in terms of rookies if he wins the starting job. But the other draft picks are in really interesting situations and, in a way, a bunch of them are similar. What do RB Audric Estime, WRs Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele, OLB Jonah Elliss and CB Kris Abrams-Draine have in common? You wouldn’t pop any of them into the starting lineup right now without having seen any competition, but you also wouldn’t be shocked if they made a move in training camp.

 766.
Elliss might actually have the cleanest route to a rotation spot since you’d like to use four OLBs anyway and he might just slide in naturally with Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto. Would you pick Abrams-Draine to start opposite Pat Surtain II today? It’d be guessing if you did. But would it be a total shock if he stacked up well against Riley Moss, Damarri Mathis and Levi Wallace once camp got rolling? Not really. Feels similar with Estime in the running back room and the rookies at receiver, too.

 767.
Did that distract you enough from the other questions? OK, Surtain MVP (duh) and check back later this week for a first-blush, totally serious, not-at-all-premature record prediction after the schedule gets released.

 768.
Hey Parker! Is there any chance the Broncos bring back Justin Simmons?

 769.
– Paul Michaelson, Livermore, CO

 770.
Hey Paul, appreciate you writing in. Never say never until Simmons signs elsewhere, but it seems very unlikely and has from the time he was released back in March. There wasn’t any talk of, “well maybe if.” The team put out a long goodbye statement. Now they’ve dished out No. 31 to Abrams-Draine.

 817.
And it’s not just that stuff, but they also signed Brandon Jones on the first day of free agency and brought P.J. Locke back. Those two plus Caden Sterns — he’ll have to prove he can stay on the field — are probably Denver’s trio. Then you’re hoping for a big Year 2 jump from JL Skinner. Delarrin Turner-Yell is working back from a major knee injury suffered right at the end of the season so he’s a question mark this year.

 818.
Now that we are at the time of year with new number assignments and changes, doesn’t it make sense to either retire the numbers 24 for Champ Bailey, 58 for Von Miller, and 88 for the late Demaryius Thomas, or put them back into circulation? It only becomes harder each year to have sufficient numbers available, which has been compounded since the league is now allowing certain defenders to wear eligible numbers from 1-19. What are your thoughts?

 819.
– A Referee, Greeley

 820.
Hey Ref, interesting question. I’m far from an expert on this type of thing. The Broncos only have three numbers formally retired — No. 7 for John Elway, No. 18 for Fran Tripucka and Peyton Manning and No. 44 for Floyd Little — but you’re right, there are others that haven’t been worn in quite some time.

 821.
Former Broncos VP of Communications Jim Saccomano in 2020 called No. 24 “unofficially retired” and that sounds about right. Hard to imagine somebody donning that number again without Bailey specifically giving the OK. Denver won’t be in a hurry to give out the others, either, I wouldn’t imagine.

 822.
The thing about numbers is they do get a little bit tight this time of year when there are 90 on the roster, but only 53 guys make the team at the end of the summer. There will be plenty of options.

 849.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton came away from rookie minicamp impressed with seventh-round WR Devaughn Vele, who only furthered early comparisons to Tim Patrick with his traits, his alma mater and his jersey number.

 850.

Sean Payton was in the midst of making a point about something else Saturday after Day 2 of Broncos rookie minicamp when he noted one of the day’s clearest developments.

 851.
Wide receiver Devaughn Vele, the seventh-round draft pick out of Utah, stood out during practice and not just because he’s 6-foot-4.

 852.
“If you didn’t know, you would have said, ‘Man, Vele seems to have a pretty good rapport with Bo (Nix) today,’” Payton said.

 853.
The point he set out to make was that Nix and fourth-round receiver Troy Franklin might benefit from having played together in college, but now that they’re rookies playing in a different offense, different league and with different teammates, that shared history might be, “a little overblown.”

 854.
Anything can be overblown in May, but the Broncos head coach was clearly impressed by Vele, the 26-year-old rookie.

 855.
“He’s got good instincts and he has really, really good ball skills,” Payton said. “In these two practices he’s moved better than I even thought for a guy his height.”

 856.
Vele’s not exactly the typical college prospect coming out. He did a two-year mission before playing five seasons at Utah, making him one of the oldest players in a draft class littered with prospects who used extra eligibility.

 857.
He put up solid numbers the past two seasons that brighten with context. Vele had 55 catches for 695 yards in 2022, second on the Utes behind now-Buffalo Bills tight end Dalton Kincaid. Last year, he caught 43 passes for 593 yards but did so on a team that averaged just 165 passing yards per game and played the entire season without starting quarterback Cam Rising.

 858.
The Broncos liked him, drafted him No. 235 overall and right away used another overlooked receiver out of Utah as the player comp: Tim Patrick.

 859.
“He was just too talented to pass up,” general manager George Paton said after the draft. “We had a clear vision for him fitting in with what we are doing. (He) is still young, relatively speaking. He plays a mature game. He has all the traits. He’s prototype, he’s big and fast. For a big guy, he can get in and out of his breaks.”

 860.
Then Vele showed up to rookie minicamp wearing No. 81, Patrick’s number before he switched to No. 12 last year.

 861.
“I actually didn’t even know he wore No. 81, so big coincidence,” Vele said. “… He’s a great player and I try to model my game after all the greats, so it’s good to have somebody that I can look up to and kind of get under his wing.”

 862.
Patrick has missed the past two seasons due to injuries but Payton had planned to use him in a variety of ways, including as a big slot. Vele projects in a similar way, the coach said, as somebody who can operate in the middle of the field or play the “X.”

 863.
“It’s just a lot of practice and a lot of repetition and a lot of extra work,” Vele said of that versatility. “Putting in a lot of extra work is going to help you get comfortable in game situations.”

 910.
There’s much more to prove to make good on the Patrick comparison. Toughness. Special teams. Leadership. But from a traits perspective, Payton sees the players in a similar way.

 911.
“He’s 6-4, but he’s low cut, so long torso, and I think that helps him in his movement skills,” Payton said. “But there are certain players that we talk about that we know are high-traffic players. Those are like forwards in basketball. … So when we look at congested catches in traffic, yards after catch, there are certain types of players who are going to play in the game. He’s that player that’s proven at the college level that he’s comfortable inside the numbers — not to say he can’t play outside the numbers.”

 912.
So far, Broncos top receiver Courtland Sutton has skipped the team’s voluntary workouts. Assuming he’s back for training camp — Sutton’s under contract for two more years and would incur fines for missing camp or Denver’s three-day mandatory minicamp in June — Denver’s got what is shaping up to be an interesting competition at receiver. Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr. and Josh Reynolds are joined by Patrick, the rookie duo of Franklin and Vele and others like Brandon Johnson and Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

 913.
A strong rookie minicamp doesn’t lock up a roster spot, but Vele’s off to a good start.

 914.
Transaction wire: The Broncos re-signed veteran wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and added rookie cornerback Quinton Newsome on Monday, the team announced.

 915.
Dorsett said via social media that he expected to return after being released Friday ahead of rookie minicamp. The Post previously reported that Newsome, a former University of Nebraska cornerback, had agreed to a free agent deal with $85,000 guaranteed plus a $15,000 signing bonus but wouldn’t have the deal finalized until after the minicamp.

 916.
To make room, Denver waived punter Nik Constantinou and wide receiver Lincoln Victor.

 942.

At Notre Dame, running back Audric Estime was fearsome.

 943.
Playing with power and strength, exemplified by his Hulk-like arms, Estime was wrecking a ball, mowing down or even leaping over tacklers that stood in his way.

 944.
Even with shorts and a practice jersey during the Broncos’ rookie minicamp on Saturday afternoon, the fifth-round pick still looked like an imposing figure that someone wouldn’t want to get in front of when he’s moving at full speed.

 945.
The addition of Estime and undrafted rookie free agent Blake Watson has created an interesting competition within Denver’s running back room that will be closely monitored throughout the team’s offseason program and training camp. The Broncos have Javonte Williams, Samaje Perine and Jaleel McLaughlin already under contract. Still, they added two running backs who have the potential to have key roles in Year 1.

 946.
“All these guys, they’re all competing for different roles, spots,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said. “… I think that we never put a cap on what they’re competing for.”

 947.
After the Broncos lacked juice in the run game in 2023, competition was likely needed. Denver finished tied for 21st in yards per carry (four) and 28th in rushing touchdowns (eight). The Broncos rushed for under 100 yards in three of the final four games. Although Williams’ return from a torn ACL was remarkable, he averaged 3.6 yards per carry and didn’t surpass 50 rushing yards in the final four games.

 948.
Meanwhile, Perine’s game was limited to third downs and being a check down target.

 949.
Estime and Watson present two different skill sets that could be beneficial to Denver’s backfield. Estime is a power back who can generate yards after contact. In 2023, he rushed for 1,348 yards and 18 touchdowns, and in the final college game of his career he exploded for 238 yards and four touchdowns in a win at Stanford last November.

 950.
He also accumulated 892 yards after contact (4.27 per attempt) and 38 runs for over 10 yards, according to Pro Football Focus. Williams averaged 2.71 yards after contact while Perine had 2.92, according to PFF.

 951.
While Payton values Estime’s power and physicality, he is intrigued by Watson’s pass-catching ability. The former Memphis running back caught 53 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns, while averaging 9.1 yards per catch.

 952.
Payton didn’t want to compare Watson to Saints running back Alvin Kamara, but both players had similar traits coming out of college.

 999.
“We saw a player that was (a) natural catching the ball,” Payton said. “That was a big draw. When we read a player, that was a draw to his vision.”

 1000.
Denver’s running back competition will be one of the biggest ones to watch. Payton said on the last day of the NFL draft that Estime is viewed as a first- and second-down runner. If he flourished in that role during training camp, what happens to Williams and Perine, both of whom are in the final year of their deals?

 1001.
Last season, the Broncos carried three running backs and fullback Michael Burton on the initial 53-man roster. Denver could very well have four running backs on the roster. Even still, how they split up the carries and roles is entirely up in the air.

 1002.
“I want to see it, and then we’ll go by what we see,” Payton said. “That was the case with Jaleel a year ago. He sat here as an undrafted free agent that was going through the workouts, and then pretty soon you began to see it.”
