61.
As long as Gabe Landeskog's future and Valeri Nichushkin's status with the Avalanche are murky, so are your parade plans. It's that simple.

 62.

 63.
Hope is no longer a strategy, O Captain, my Captain. Not a working strategy. Not a Stanley Cup-winning strategy, at any rate. Without Gabe Landeskog, the Avs are stuck spinning their wheels in neutral, pining for the hockey gods to give them a push.

 64.
“I’d like to be able for him to come back and be able to play,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said late Friday after his team’s playoff dreams ended with a gut punch of a loss at home, this time to Dallas, for a second straight spring. “And I think that can happen. And if anybody can do it, Gabe can do it.”

 65.
Amen. If you’re not rooting like heck for Landy to be back out on that ice, raising the bar and setting the tone, you don’t have a soul. Let’s be clear: The Avs aren’t in this championship window without him.

 66.
But let’s be clear on something else, too, the uncomfortable reality even if you wear burgundy-and-blue glasses: This franchise has been running in place for almost two years, in part, because of him. Because of that blasted knee. Because of those blasted surgeries. Because of that blasted hope.

 67.
None of this is Landy’s fault. Are you kidding? Nobody this side of Nathan MacKinnon wants to finish what the ’22 Stanley Cup champs started more than big No. 92, where the buck, and the bull junk, always stops.

 68.
But like the castaways on Gilligan’s Island, the Avs look as if they’ve spent 18 months stranded on the beach, singing songs by the campfire, waiting for a rescue ship that may or may not ever come.

 69.
“I’m optimistic and hopeful,” Bednar said of his absent captain. “(But) I don’t think we got close to getting him back (this postseason).”

 70.
It’s the teasing, the hope, that kills you. And we get it. You completely understand why the Avs would treat Landy’s knee with kid gloves. Why they’d give him all the time he needs. As with Valeri Nichushkin, the other elephant in Bednar’s locker room, nobody on this roster steps in and does what the captain did — and presumably still can.

 71.
Landeskog’s absence was especially felt in this second-round series, when a team as sound, physical and deep as Dallas needed to have its teeth rattled a few times. When Jamie Benn cheap-shotted Devon Toews in Game 2, for example, there were no immediate reprisals, no one stepping forward to enforce on-ice justice.

 72.
“What, do you just want us to take penalties and fight?” veteran defenseman Jack Johnson replied after Game 6 when I asked about this roster’s toughness. “Is that what you want?

 73.
“I mean, toughness comes out in different ways. If you just want penalties and to fight, you’re not going to get very far in the playoffs.

 74.
“The team that won (in 2022) had plenty of toughness. … I don’t think that anyone looked down the list of that (title) team and saw a lot of goons.”

 75.
No, but they did look down that list to see Landy and Nazem Kadri — two dudes who gave on this stage as good as they got.

 76.
The longer general manager Chris MacFarland is hamstrung by sentiment, the longer this championship window remains in stasis. Was MacKinnon a frustrating watch, at times, against the Stars’ defense? No question. But as long as Gabe’s future and Nichushkin’s status with the Avs are murky, so are your parade plans.

 77.
It’s that simple.

 124.
O Captain, my Captain, come back soon. Or don’t come back at all. The island’s getting lonely. Lord Stanley’s skies are getting darker sooner here with each passing year.

 125.
“I don’t know. I don’t know the answer to that,” Bednar said of Gabe and Val. “You hate having that uncertainty because it makes it hard to plan … for management, for Chris and Joe (Sakic). …

 126.
“Those are obviously a couple of guys who have significant cap hits. I don’t know where that goes or (how) far this goes this summer. That’s a challenge. That’s a big challenge.”

 127.
It is. Meanwhile, the wheels keep spinning. And this much is clear: The hockey gods are done doing Bednar any more favors. From here on out, if the Avs are going to move forward, MacFarland’s going to have get out of the car and do the pushing himself.

 152.
Of course it came down to the puck on Matt Duchene’s stick. The No. 3 pick in the 2009 NHL Draft spent nine years with Colorado. Several teams and many miles later, Duchene knocked out the Avs on Friday night at Ball Arena.

 153.

Of course it came down to the puck on Matt Duchene’s stick.

 154.
It figures because of his history in this building and this state.

 155.
It figures, too, because he had his fingerprints all over Game 6.

 156.
Double overtime. Running on fumes. A week that turned the Avalanche’s season upside down.

 157.
It’s been a long time since Duchene played for Colorado at this point (although, fans still boo him at Ball Arena). It’ll be a long time before he forgets this one. He just has to remember exactly what happened, first.

 158.
“I don’t even know. I think I ended up on my knees,” said Duchene, who did indeed drop to the ice, made a big heart shape with his arms and then punched through it before getting mobbed by his teammates. “I have no idea, to be honest with you. It’s just elation, right? Hard-fought series. They’re a hell of a team, obviously.

 159.
“They were really good the last two games and they pushed us.”

 160.
The 33-year-old was the No. 3 overall pick by Colorado in the 2009 draft, then played the first nine years of his career for the Avalanche before he asked to be traded and was eventually dealt for four players and three draft picks in November 2017.

 161.
Two times before he slammed home the game-winner from point blank range 91-plus minutes into the night, Duchene nearly helped the Stars to victory.

 162.
In the first overtime, he won a faceoff and posted up in front of the net, tussling with Cale Makar. Mason Marchment ripped a shot cleanly past Alexander Georgiev, but Duchene was called for interfering with Georgiev and the call withstood a long review.

 163.
“I haven’t seen the replay, really, of the no goal,” Duchene said. “I’ll leave it at that. I think you just stay with it. It can be a little tough to reset after you think it’s over and you hope it’s over. It’s a gut punch a little bit, but that’s what we do.”

 164.
Early in the second overtime, Duchene got a walk-in chance on Georgiev but couldn’t find the back of the net as the goaltender splayed out to make a stop.

 165.
Then, finally, he put Dallas into the Western Conference Final. He’s rarely been part of a run like this during his 15 seasons.

 212.
That’s nine years in Colorado, one-plus in Ottawa, a stretch run in Columbus and four in Nashville before signing with the Stars in the offseason.

 213.
“At 33, I think there’s a certain level of appreciation that you have that you wouldn’t have had as a young player,” Duchene said. “… I probably let it stress me out more than it’s been fun at times just because you want it so bad, but I’m starting to relax a little bit more and it’s getting to be a lot of fun as we go on here.”

 214.
Now the Stars are into the final four and the veteran center will be a key part of the puzzle as they try to find eight more wins.

 215.
“Really happy for ‘Dutchy’. He’s ridden the confidence roller coaster here in the second half (of the season),” Stars coach Pete DeBoer said. “Some high highs and some low lows. It was probably about as low as he could be after Game 5. That’s why our group is special. I thought they rallied around him and he was maybe our best player tonight.”

 311.

Instant reaction from the Avalanche’s 2-1 loss against Dallas in Game 6 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

 312.
Georgie’s finest. Fistfights aren’t pretty. They sometimes require just hanging tough. With the season hanging in the balance, Alexandar Georgiev patrolled the crease with little room for error. Colorado’s high-flying offense found itself in a grinder. This wasn’t a night when the big fellas could easily cover up a softie.

 313.
Jaime Benn stormed down the center, in behind Cale Makar, and took a perfect pass to level the game at one early in the third period. Otherwise, Georgiev was on his toes from the start. He fended off a second-period flurry. He didn’t put the puck in harm’s way often. He added to the highlight reel. He ignited the Ball Arena crowd in several rounds of “Georgie, Georgie” chants. He survived an overtime review of a Dallas winner waved off due to contact in the crease. He stopped 10 shots in the first overtime and laid to stop a Matt Duchene walk-in attempt early in the second.

 314.
He gave the Avs every chance to claw some way, somehow to the finish. They just couldn’t. Duchene finally punched the Stars’ ticket and knocked out Colorado 11:42 into the second overtime.

 315.
On the outs. Just like that, it’s lights out on the Avalanche. A few weeks from now there will be two Stanley Cup champions between the 2022 team and the now. The division was hotly contested the whole year. Dallas is a worthy Western Conference Final entrant. And yet this will feel like a what-could-have-been for Jared Bednar’s team. What if Valeri Nichushkin hadn’t been suspended for six months right before Game 4? What if the Avs hadn’t fallen behind 3-1 in this series? What if Jonathan Drouin converted a near goal early in the first overtime on a find from Nathan MacKinnon? Or Arturi Lehkonen in the final minute of the first overtime.

 316.
It’s hard to win a Cup even in the best of circumstances. Now it’s tee times and beaches instead of Vancouver or Edmonton.

 317.
Second chances. The Stars won late in the first overtime. Then they didn’t. Then they maybe should have, but still didn’t.

 318.
Mason Marchment ripped a shot cleanly past Georgiev to send the Stars through to the Western Conference Final. Except an official adamantly waved off the goal immediately, saying Georgiev had been contacted by a Dallas player in the crease.

 319.
Duchene won the faceoff and dove to the net, mixing it up with Makar in front of Georgiev. The contact was light and most of it came after Makar appeared to push Duchene into Georgiev.

 366.
A long review put this call in front of the officials: Uphold the call or reverse it and end Colorado’s season on its home ice. They kept the call in place and played on. A massive break for Colorado that extended their season for minutes rather than days or weeks.

 397.
For 236 days, the Colorado Avalanche was a Stanley Cup contender during the 2023-24 NHL season.

 398.

For 236 days, the Colorado Avalanche was a Stanley Cup contender during the 2023-24 NHL season.

 399.
The calculus changed on Day 237, and the memories of how this campaign unraveled in swift fashion may only be rivaled by the what ifs and what could have beens in the decades to come.

 400.
It all came apart in a few days, weeks short of the intended destination. The final stop was a 2-1 overtime loss Friday night in Game 6 to the Dallas Stars at Ball Arena, but the end of the road started at the beginning of the week.

 401.
“It’s a little bit of a shock when it ends like that,” said Avs forward Zach Parise, who has decided he will retire after this season after joining the club midseason for one last crack at a Stanley Cup. “It’s really tough. We were able to get a great win down there in Game 5. You wish you we would have bene able to get one of those first two home games. That was the big difference. Unfortunately, it is tough to come back from (down) 3-1.”

 402.
Former Avalanche center Matt Duchene scored in the second overtime for the Stars, who overcame a second-intermission deficit and advanced to the Western Conference Final. Dallas will face either Edmonton or Vancouver for the chance to play in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.

 403.
Duchene pounced on a loose puck to the left of Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev with 8:18 remaining in the second overtime. He had been part of a controversial no-goal for the Stars in the first overtime session as well.

 404.
“It’s heartbreaking to put all that effort into a game like that,” Avs forward Jonathan Drouin said. “It was two very good teams going at it in overtime. I thought we had our looks to score a couple and we didn’t.”

 405.
Jamie Benn evened this game at 1-1 just 1:54 into the third period. Evgenii Dadonov made a great backhand pass to Benn as he cut to the net, and the Stars captain tucked a backhanded shot past Georgiev.

 406.
Mikko Rantanen helped the Avalanche score first for the first time in this series with a power-play goal in the second period. Stars forward Wyatt Johnston was playing keep away and killing time in the Colorado end during the power play when Cale Makar knocked him to the ice with a big hit and the Avs went the other way.

 407.
The aggressiveness of the Dallas penalty kill has been a theme in this series, but the Stars were surprisingly passive after Colorado got set up. Eventually that led to Rantanen getting the puck to the left of Jake Oettinger near the goal line. He had time to pick his corner, and he did it at 5:48 of the second.

 408.
The Avs were down 2-1 in this series, but Drouin was set to return to the lineup and the team finished its morning skate Monday morning confident that a fully-operational battle station was ready to even the series with Dallas and continue its pursuit of the franchise’s fourth championship.

 409.
Then Valeri Nichushkin was suspended for at least six months just before the start of Game 4. And Devon Toews could not play because of illness. Game 4 was a washout.

 410.
Toews returned for Game 5, and the 2022 champions made one last stand. It was not enough, and a long offseason that begins with more questions than answers is here.

 411.
This was a roster built to win a second championship in three years. It was bolstered with reinforcements before the trade deadline to make a run to 16 playoff victories possible. The Avs ended up 10 shy of the goal.

 412.
“(Management) felt like we had the group in here, and we believed we had a group in here, so to fall short … that’s when it stings a little bit more,” Toews said.

 413.
There were plenty of great moments to remember from this campaign, once the emotions of the past three days subside. MacKinnon had a season for the ages, setting the franchise record with 140 points. Makar set a new standard for defensemen with 90, topping the mark he set two years ago.

 414.
If there was a comeback player of the year award in the NHL, Drouin would be a top contender. Samuel Girard found the help he needed, and played the best hockey of his career.

 415.
The Avalanche still has one of the best cores in the NHL, with MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen and Toews in the primes of their careers. What they don’t have is clarity on two of the most expensive players who should be part of that core.

 462.
Captain Gabe Landeskog has returned to the ice in limited capacity, but now has not played in an NHL game in two full seasons. Nichushkin is suspended until at least mid-November, and it could be longer. That is more than $13 million of salary cap space for two players who, when right, are capable of being difference-makers during a Cup run.

 463.
But the Avs have no idea if and when either will be available again. There are other questions as well – Drouin leads a group of eight unrestricted free agents that dressed for Game 5, and cap space will be limited. Rantanen is now entering the final year of his contract and is eligible to sign a new one in July.

 464.
This team began the season as a Cup contender. The way it played shortly after the trade deadline and while it wiped out Winnipeg in five games cemented it as one.

 465.
Now, the wait begins again. What will come of the 2024-25 Avalanche could hinge on Landeskog’s repaired knee, Nichushkin’s latest attempt at the rehabilitation process and how general manager Chris MacFarland’s team can replenish the depth around the world-class core.

 466.
“Yeah, I don’t know the to answer to that,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “You have having that uncertainty because it makes it harder to plan.

 467.
“That’s a challenge. That’s a big challenge.”

 499.
It hasn't been a great week for certainty about the future of the Colorado Avalanche roster, but one key position looks set for the next few years.

 500.

It hasn’t been a great week for certainty about the future of the Avalanche roster.

 501.
The Avs already had one key player — captain Gabe Landeskog — whose future contributions remain in question due to a long-term injury. But Valeri Nichushkin’s suspension and mandated return to the NHL-NHLPA Player Assistance Program has left Colorado with two of its highest-paid players as significant question marks for the 2024-25 season and beyond.

 502.
One position on the roster where the Avs have significantly fewer questions than they did at the start of this season is the most important one. Before this season began, the depth chart behind Nathan MacKinnon at center was arguably the biggest unknown about the 2023-24 roster. It remained one for much of the regular season.

 503.
It hasn’t been a linear path, but the Avs reached Game 6 of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs with a much brighter and clearer outlook down the middle.

 504.
“I like where we are at,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “I think everyone in the middle of the ice has a specific role. They know what is. They are perfectly capable of accomplishing that role and playing really good hockey for us.”

 505.
The Avalanche will be without Yakov Trenin, who has settled in as the No. 4 center since arriving just before the trade deadline, Friday night against the Dallas Stars at Ball Arena. But the addition of Casey Mittelstadt and the development of Ross Colton has changed the future outlook for the position in a big way.

 506.
When the season began, the Avalanche had MacKinnon coming off the most productive season of his career, but questions at every other spot on the depth chart. Colorado traded for Ryan Johansen, Colton and Fredrik Olofsson during the offseason, and they were centers two through four in the opening night lineup.

 507.
Johansen did not work out. Colton had some early-season struggles. Olofsson proved he could be a regular in this league, but the Avs ultimately determined they needed more size and speed at the No. 4 spot to compete with some of the bigger, faster Stanley Cup contenders in the Western Conference.

 508.
Mittelstadt and Trenin arrived before the deadline and instantly transformed the depth at the position from a question mark to a strength. Colton’s progression has helped make him a plus on the third line as well.

 509.
“Exponential (growth),” Bednar said. “I mean he comes in playing a position he hasn’t played in years, that he hasn’t played in this league. There’s some growing pains early, some positional stuff. Habits that you have to break as a winger to play center. There’s a lot of detail that goes into it. He put the work in. We saw a huge growth after about a month of the season and then it kind of settled off. I think he’s having a great playoffs.”

 511.
There were games after Bednar lost confidence in Johansen where Colton became the team’s de facto No. 2 center, but after Mittelstadt’s arrival and some improved health on the wing, he has settled into the role the Avs hoped he could fill as the No. 3 guy.

 512.
Colton and his buddy Miles Wood are the anchors on a physical, fast third line.

 513.
“I think the coaches did a great job of sticking with me, working with me,” Colton said. “There were some ups and downs, but I feel like I’ve settled into the role. Trying to be sound in all three zones. A lot of that was taking the extra time to watch video with the coaches, doing some extra work. It helped a lot.”

 560.
Trenin is an unrestricted free agent after the season, so who the No. 4 center will be next year remains to be seen. But Colton is locked in for another three years. Mittelstadt is a restricted free agent, but has quickly been accepted by the team’s core and could be the solution as the No. 2 guy behind MacKinnon for a long time.

 561.
And, oh, by the way, MacKinnon just set a franchise record for points and might win his first league MVP trophy. There’s also the club’s best prospect, Calum Ritchie, who just had 110 points in 71 OHL games and could be a contributor in the not-so-distant future.

 562.
The next few seasons could be the best for this franchise at center since the days when Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg patrolled the middle of the ice.

 563.
For a franchise that is still processing the aftermath of Nichushkin’s suspension, which will make him unavailable for a minimum of six months and linger into next season, that type of certainty at such an important position is going to be critical.

 591.
The Avs' championship core showed up in a huge way in Dallas in Game 5.

 592.

DALLAS — If anyone turned off the television midway through Game 4 and avoided the events of last night, they’d likely assume the Colorado Avalanche’s season was over.

 593.
It certainly looked bleak, given the news prior to the game Monday night and the Avs’ performance as the Dallas Stars dominated in a way that neither side had. The season is not over, and the Avs might have found the spark they needed to still make the improbable possible in this second-round series.

 594.
Colorado’s championship core had time to reset, time for Devon Toews to shake an illness, and the Avalanche’s big guns showed out Wednesday night in Game 5 in Dallas.

 595.
“Your leaders and your top guys, you hear it all the time, have to be your top guys,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “You don’t want to just rely on your top guys all the time, but they’re put out in situations to help you produce and they’re hard on themselves when don’t. I like that personally because they’re holding themselves to a high standard.

 596.
“They were fantastic.”

 597.
Colorado’s core guys had their fingerprints on every Avalanche goal in a 5-3 victory.

 598.
Nathan MacKinnon got the Avs going. Colorado nearly went a fifth straight game in this series without scoring a goal in the first period, but MacKinnon broke the club out of a power-play slump and gave it life by finding Artturi Lehkonen for a one-timer with 0.6 seconds left.

 599.
Cale Makar erased a second deficit with another power-play goal in the second, with the help of a Mikko Rantanen screen. Rantanen made multiple key plays to help create the go-ahead goal early in the third period.

 600.
His play, more than the other stars, has been scrutinized the most of late. He did not earn an assist on Casey Mittelstadt’s goal, but he’s been a key part of three in three games. Bednar split MacKinnon and Rantanen in Game 5 at even strength, and was happy with the results.

 601.
“Mikko, to me, has been getting better as the series has gone on. More competitive. It’s starting to show up,” Bednar said. “I’m starting to see a lot of productive things in Mikko’s game, and I’m sure his offense will come with that.”

 602.
Makar and MacKinnon added the final two goals, as the Avalanche offense finally looked freed from the shackles that Dallas’ defensive structure had placed on it for much of the previous three games.

 603.
“It’s not a one-man job or a two-man job to create offense,” Bednar said. “I thought we were more connected tonight as a group of five, working at the same time instead of one or two guys working and a couple of guys watching. But yeah, (the top guys) come up and play their best game of the series. And they get rewarded on skill plays that start with hard work from the group. And then their skill is allowed to shine.”

 605.
The Avalanche scored three goals in a period for the first time this series. Colorado did not trail at the end of the first intermission for the first time, then followed it up by not trailing at the second intermission for the first time as well.

 652.
It’s been a very tight series, but Dallas has scored first and forced Colorado to chase. The Avs were able to track the Stars down in a manner that didn’t necessitate a furious third-period comeback.

 653.
They also beat Jake Oettinger with a couple of shots that made him look mortal. Whether or not any or all of this will matter Friday night in Game 6 remains to be seen. Postseason series often have very little momentum from game to game.

 654.
Just look at how Colorado performed in Game 5 after looking like a defeated outfit in Game 4. The Avs looked more like themselves Wednesday night, and that gives them hope to keep the pressure on.

 655.
“It forced us out of our comfort zone,” MacKinnon said. “It was do or die and we just couldn’t lay an egg again. It was the first full 60 (minute effort) of this series for us. If we can keep doing that, I like our chances.”

 688.

Spare the wreaths. Hold the psalms. You come to bury Cale Makar, you better come correct.

 689.
Lordy, the yapping. The peanut gallery on X tapped out 150-character obits, a troll at a time. ESPN spent much of Avalanche-Stars Game 5 speaking of Makar as if he’d retired at age 25.

 690.
For several hours, the greatest defenseman of his generation — of several, now that you mention it — was getting his mugshot cropped for the 2024 NHL Awards show’s “In Memoriam” segment.

 691.
Here lies CALE MAKAR’S CAREER, 2018-2024, RIP. May the road rise to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.

 692.
They’d torn the crown off Cale’s head Wednesday and were fitting it for the dome of young Dallas defenseman Miro Heiskanen. Until the third period. Until the fastest gun in the west, the best blue-line gunslinger since Bobby Orr, refused to let a series die.

 693.
“You’re playing desperate hockey now. Everyone’s got to play on the edge,” Makar said after his two goals rallied Colorado to a 5-3 victory and forced a Game 6 on Friday night at Ball Arena. “You’ve got to fight for every single chance that you’re getting now, (these) being elimination games.”

 694.
Makar went into Game 5 staring at a three-tilt postseason pointless streak. The Avs were staring at Cancun. The narrative was pasting the kid’s No. 8 sweater on milk cartons from Plano to Paonia.

 695.
The 24-year-old Heiskanen went into the final stanza on Wednesday night with eight points in the series. Makar went in with four. The Stars were a win away from sending Colorado packing. The connection between the two was self-explanatory.

 696.
To be fair, Dallas’ blue-line wunderkind had been more impactful offensively of the two through the first 38 minutes of Game 5. Heiskanen’s goal off the rush 11:39 into the second period snapped a 1-1 tie and was his fifth of the series. Makar responded with a sweet wrister of his own on the power play nine minutes later, knotting the game at 2-2 on a laser that beat a traffic jam of bodies and Stars goalie Jake Oettinger in the process.

 697.
“It was a full-unit mistake last game,” teammate Nathan MacKinnon told reporters. “(It) feels like that (Game 4 loss) was the only blemish of his playoff career. … He’s been unreal. He’s won a Conn Smythe (trophy) for a reason. He’s been there, done that. He’s not shaken by anything. He’s so mentally strong and we’re lucky to have him back there.”

 698.
About four-and-half minutes into the third period, Makar made his own luck. As only he could. With the Avs clinging to a 3-2 cushion, No. 8 raced to save an errant puck before it could slide into the neutral zone, zigged left, then zagged on a dime to his right in order to create a clean shooting lane. In a blink, Makar slotted the biscuit right through a shocked Oettinger’s five hole.

 699.
“Every one one of our (defenders) or theirs doesn’t have the ability (like Makar) to dance a guy in space and get to the net, right?” Avs coach Jared Bednar gushed after the game. “It takes elite skill to be able to do that and there’s only a handful of guys in the league that can do it …

 700.
“Great on him. That’s what we need from him. Obviously, we need that now, especially where we’re at in the series.”

 701.
The hard part doesn’t get any easier from here. Dallas is 4-1 on the road this postseason. Its 26 victories away from home during the regular season topped the Western Conference.

 702.
Nobody parks the bus with a lead, as the Brits like to say, the way that a Pete DeBoer team does. The Avs have been held to one goal or fewer at Ball Arena just four times since Jan. 1. The Stars, over the last week, have accounted for half of those.

 749.
“Obviously, (it’s a) do-or-die game from here on out in this series, so for us, each of us, we all feed off each other, kind of,” Makar continued. “(We had a) couple lapses in games and I felt like we were kind of back to forcing their hand (in Game 5) and playing well.”

 750.
Among defensemen who’ve appeared in at least 40 playoff games, only the legendary Orr (1.24) averaged more points than Makar’s 1.11. Over 71 Stanley Cup appearances, he’s only gone without a point in 23 games. The Avs, no shock, went on to lose 14 of them.

 751.
“We had a couple tough games and we’ve got to move on and find a way,” the Avs defenseman told reporters. “And I think the guys had a really good mentality. We got a good mentality coming into (Game 5) and (we’ve) got to hopefully continue that.”

 752.
The gunslinger’s got his groove back? Sorry, Miro. Makar’s still the real Stanley Cup hero.

 850.

Instant reaction from the Avalanche’s 5-3 win at Dallas in Game 5 of their second-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series.

 851.
1. MacKinnon, Makar come through: What was it Michael Malone reminded us? Never underestimate the heart of a champion — even if that champion is 23 months removed from its last parade. The Avs go as its three Hall-of-Famers go, and those three pillars — Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Cale Makar — felt as if they were gone from this series after Game 1. Fortunately for Avs fans, Colorado’s Big 3 came up huge in Game 5. MacKinnon’s wrister past Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger with 3:10 left in the game sealed the victory, while Makar’s two goals rallied the Avs from a 2-1 deficit midway through the second stanza. It’s not rocket science: If Colorado is to record a historic series comeback after being down 3-1 to the Stars, their superstars are going to have to keep doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

 852.
2. Not Pavelski again: Even more than the Timberwolves were built to flummox the Nuggets, the Stars were designed to fluster the Avs. Dallas coach Pete DeBoer has a muck-it-up, smothering defensive style that’s sent a Jared Bednar team home twice in the last five years. And Stars forward Joe Pavelski is one of the NHL’s great postseason Colorado killjoys. His first-period goal Wednesday was his ninth all-time versus the Avs in the playoffs and his two points through the first 45 minutes give him 17 all-time against Colorado in the postseason. The former Wisconsin Badgers star has netted 12% of his career Stanley Cup Playoffs goals versus the burgundy and blue.

 853.
3. Streaks ending, hope beginning?: If you had the Avs buried and gone over the opening 12 minutes of the first period, join the club. The desperation of being down 3-1 in the series and facing elimination appeared to kick in roughly halfway through the opening stanza. Colorado finished the period with a flourish, and Artturi Lehkonen’s buzzer-beating power-play goal off a wrister was huge on three fronts. First, it got the Avs to the locker room with a 1-1 score and some momentum. Second, it was Colorado’s first power play score in the series since Game 1, when the Avs notched two. Third, it was the Avs’ first goal in the first period all series. Dallas was outscoring Colorado 7-0 in the opening stanza until Lehkonen got on the board.
