  20. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/16/2241019/-Biden-got-the-debates-he-wanted-Full-stop&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;debate terms agreed to by the campaigns&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; of President Joe Biden and Donald Trump still include a wild card: whether independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will participate.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  21.
  22. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Whether Kennedy manages to qualify is one question. He &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.axios.com/2024/05/15/trump-biden-debate-rfk-jr-cnn&#x22;&#x3E;needs to garner&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; 15% support in four high-quality national polls and make the ballot in enough states to conceivably get 270 electoral votes. This week, Kennedy&#x27;s running mate, Nicole Shanahan, pledged to&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.politico.com/news/2024/05/16/robert-f-kennedy-jr-nicole-shanahan-8-million-campaign-ballot-access-00158373&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;pour $8 million&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; into the campaign&#x27;s ballot access efforts.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  23.
  24. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;To date, Kennedy has&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://elections2024.thehill.com/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;confirmed ballot access&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; in just three states&#x2014;Michigan, Utah, and Oklahoma&#x2014;worth 28 electoral votes and claims to have access in nearly a dozen other states worth 131 electoral votes.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  25.
  26. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;But regardless of whether Kennedy meets the criteria, there&#x27;s no world in which he has any chance of winning the presidency. In fact, his running mate admitted they have no path and instead hope to influence &#x22;policy.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  74. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;When it was Shawnna Bolick&#x2019;s turn to speak, the words tumbled out of her for 20 minutes. The conservative lawmaker was in the middle of a heated debate in the Republican-led Arizona Senate on a bill to repeal an&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-arizona-legislature-8120658e7f965855fba3f23b950321f0&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;1864 law banning nearly all abortions.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  75.
  76. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Democrats needed at least one more vote from the right to advance the bill.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  77.
  78. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Bolick, head hung low and tripping over her words, described her three difficult pregnancies, including one that ended in miscarriage. She said she wouldn&#x27;t have got through it &#x22;without the moral support of my husband.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  79.
  80. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Her husband, Arizona Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick, was&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/arizona-abortion-restrictions-1864-9c68866d69dca38c728dd27b80592e8f&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;part of the majority&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;that voted in April to restore the near-total ban.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  81.
  82. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Observers in the gallery jeered as the senator declared herself &#x201C;pro-life.&#x22; Only in the final moments of her speech did her intention become clear.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  83.
  84. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;I am here to protect more babies,&#x201D; she said. &#x201C;I vote aye.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  85.
  86. &#x3C;p&#x3E;The bill passed and a day later, May 2, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/arizona-governor-abortion-ban-1864-signing-07bba2fa805971be62b800bd89c81a5a&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;signed it into law.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  109. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Democrats may be in the minority in the Missouri Senate, but you wouldn&#x27;t know it after they staged an epic filibuster that just forced Republicans to abandon a cynical ploy to undermine direct democracy and thwart abortion rights.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  110.
  111. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Joining us on &#x22;The Downballot&#x22; this week is&#x3C;span&#x3E; state Sen. Lauren Arthur, one of the participants in Democrats&#x27; record-breaking legislative marathon. Arthur breaks down the GOP&#x27;s scheme to con voters into making it harder to amend the state constitution and explains how Democrats hung together through a 50-hour filibuster to protect cherished civil rights.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

The Davids also highlight a big flip in Alaska, where a Democratic-backed independent is on course to unseat Anchorage&#x27;s far-right mayor once final votes are tallied.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  142. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/19/2241216/-This-VP-hopeful-could-be-just-what-Trump-s-looking-for-Rich-and-forgettable?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  143. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;On the list of &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_population&#x22;&#x3E;most populous states&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, North Dakota comes in at 47. Even its neighbor to the south, governed by &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/8/2239595/-Even-Fox-News-is-piling-on-puppy-killer-Kristi-Noem&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;puppy-slaying Kristi Noem&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, has a greater population of people&#x2014;and voters.&#x26;nbsp;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  144.
  145. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;But despite North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum&#x2019;s obscurity and the fact that he held no political office before becoming governor of this lightly populated state in 2016, he is reportedly &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/14/opinions/doug-burgum-donald-trump-vice-president-jennings/index.html&#x22;&#x3E;at the top of Trump&#x27;s list&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; of vice presidential hopefuls.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  146.
  147. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Burgum has been touching all the bases on the Wanna-Be-VP Tour, including making an appearance &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4663084-the-hot-new-gop-club-is-at-trumps-new-york-trial/&#x22;&#x3E;at Trump&#x27;s New York trial&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; for falsifying documents connected to the 2016 election. Though Burgum doesn&#x2019;t have a lot of accomplishments, his political experience seems wholly inadequate, and his familiarity to voters around the nation is somewhere well below that of &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.keloland.com/news/local-news/hunting-dog-experts-weigh-in-after-cricket-story/&#x22;&#x3E;Cricket&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, he has something that appeals to Trump: money.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

Through a combination of cost overruns and the bad luck of opening in the teeth of the Great Recession, it was also a vast money loser.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  205.
  206. &#x3C;p&#x3E;But when Trump sought to reap tax benefits from his losses, the IRS has argued, he went too far and in effect wrote off the same losses twice.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  231. <description>&#x3C;div&#x3E;
  232. &#x3C;div&#x3E;
  233. &#x3C;p&#x3E;It was daunting when the Rev.cBrandon Thomas Crowley, at age 22, replaced a beloved pastor who had ministered to one of suburban Boston&#x2019;s most famed Black churches for 24 years.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  234.
  235. &#x3C;p&#x3E;It was more daunting &#x2014; at times agonizing &#x2014; to reach the decision six years later, in 2015, that God wanted him to tell his congregation that he was gay.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  236.
  237. &#x3C;p&#x3E;To his relief, most of the worshippers at Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts, embraced him. Crowley&#x2019;s career has flourished, and he has now written a book &#x2014; &#x201C;Queering the Black Church&#x201D; &#x2014; that he hopes can serve as a guide for other congregations to be &#x201C;open and affirming&#x201D; to LGBTQ+ people rather than shunning them.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  238.
  239. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Crowley, 37, was born in Atlanta and raised in Rome, Georgia. He admired the preachers he heard as a child, especially at Lovejoy Baptist Church, his home congregation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  240.
  241. &#x3C;p&#x3E;One Sunday, however, the pastor preached a fiery sermon against homosexuals.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  242.
  243. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;He called them all types of names, using derogatory phrases and really describing it as a detestable group and a sinful thing, and I just sort of knew he was talking about me,&#x201D; Crowley said in an interview. &#x201C;That was my first introduction to really knowing the beauty of who I am as a queer person.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  258. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The late, great&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.thejazzpianosite.com/jazz-piano-lessons/jazz-chord-voicings/stride-piano/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;stride pianist&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; and organist Fats Waller&#x2019;s birthday is May 21. Often overlooked is his prodigious record as a songwriter during the heyday of Tin Pan Alley&#x200B;&#x200B;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x2014;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;a period in American music history in the New York City music publishing district from the late 1890s to the 1970s&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x2014;where he has been credited with more than 400 songs. What is even more interesting is the fact that for many of his famous tunes, like &#x201C;Ain&#x2019;t Misbehavin&#x2019;&#x201D; and &#x201C;Honeysuckle Rose,&#x201D; his lyricist was a man named Andy Razaf, who was born in the U.S. but whose mother fled Madagascar when her husband, a nephew of the queen, was murdered during the French invasion and takeover. Pregnant, the 15-year-old was able to escape to the U.S. where she gave birth to her son, a hereditary prince, in Washington, D.C., in 1895.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  260. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;This story should be a movie script!&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  304. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/tags/AbbreviatedPunditRoundUp&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Abbreviated Pundit Roundup&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E; is a long-running series published every morning that collects essential political discussion and analysis around the internet.&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  305.
  306. &#x3C;p&#x3E;We begin today with&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/05/justice-alito-upside-down-flag-jan-6/678410/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Adam Serwer&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;of&#x26;nbsp;The Atlantic being totally non-surprised&#x26;nbsp;that U.S. Supreme Court Justice&#x26;nbsp;Samuel Alito is an&#x26;nbsp;insurrectionist.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  307.
  308. &#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
  309. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The most charitable interpretation of Alito&#x2019;s non-disavowal of the upside-down flag and its meaning is that, because the Court has several forthcoming cases related to Trump&#x2019;s actions, he wanted to avoid expressing an opinion beforehand. Justices do typically try to avoid opining publicly on matters that come before them, and to avoid the appearance of partisanship, even if they do not &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.cnn.com/2016/07/12/politics/justice-ruth-bader-ginsburg-donald-trump-faker/index.html&#x22;&#x3E;always succeed&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;. Perhaps this really was what Alito was thinking when he gave that statement to the &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Times&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;. The flaw in this defense is that Alito is as shy about sharing his political opinions as a street preacher is in predicting the apocalypse.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  310.
  311. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;In 2020, Alito &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/13/us/samuel-alito-religious-liberty-free-speech.html&#x22;&#x3E;warned that liberals were a threat&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; to free speech. In 2021, he &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/10/alito-supreme-court-texas-abortion/620339/&#x22;&#x3E;attacked the media&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; for correctly reporting that the Supreme Court had nullified the right to an abortion in Texas by upholding the state&#x2019;s abortion-bounty law, and was poised to overturn that right in the rest of the country. In 2022, he &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/justice-samuel-alitos-latest-political-speech-rankles-rcna40612&#x22;&#x3E;mocked those who criticized&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; his &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/07/conservative-justices-alito-hypocrisy-dobbs-plessy-ferguson-brown-board-education/661505/&#x22;&#x3E;ahistorical ruling&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; in &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/05/alito-leaked-roe-opinion-abortion-supreme-court-civil-rights/629748/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;the &#x3C;em&#x3E;Dobbs&#x3C;/em&#x3E; case&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, which has led to a patchwork of laws that subject women to a gender-based regime of state force and surveillance. In &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/06/23/samuel-alito-supreme-court-speaking-out/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;2023, he ran to the &#x3C;em&#x3E;Wall Street Journal&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; editorial page to defend himself after reporters uncovered his cozy relationship with a right-wing billionaire. A few days ago, &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/11/us/politics/justice-alito-freedom-speech-religion.html&#x22;&#x3E;he warned&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; that &#x201C;support for freedom of speech is declining dangerously, especially where it should find deepest acceptance,&#x201D; only he was echoing ubiquitous right-wing rhetoric about liberals on college campuses, not reflecting on Republican-controlled states &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://pen.org/report/educational-intimidation/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;engaging in a massive campaign of outright censorship&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;. And despite all of these public statements attacking the left, particularly on matters of free speech, Alito has amassed a &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2010/04/justice-alito-s-double-standard-for-the-first-amendment.html&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;jurisprudential record&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; suggesting that his &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://knightcolumbia.org/content/free-speech-jurisprudence-justice-samuel-alito&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;interpretation of the First Amendment&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; confers a &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/09/salman-rushdie-attack-bari-weiss-free-speech/671318/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;right to monologue&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; on those who share his beliefs.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

A day after that, Ukrainian sources were reporting that Russia&#x2019;s &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-kharkiv-assault-border-7b82813d3004c1d44fd76354b8b95ea2&#x22;&#x3E;initial advance&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; had been &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.foxnews.com/world/ukraine-beats-back-russian-attempt-cross-border-moscow-seeks-kharkiv-buffer-zone-report&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;thrown back&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; with heavy losses and it was unclear that Russia seriously meant to advance toward Ukraine&#x2019;s second-largest city.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  327.
  328. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;It&#x2019;s clear now.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  329.
  330. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;As &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/05/13/russia-ukraine-kharkiv-putin-war-terekhov/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;The Washington Post&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; reported on Monday, the city of Kharkiv was pummeled by bombs and MLRS as Russian forces pressed across the northeast border of Ukraine. By Wednesday, the &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1030vvy0mzo&#x22;&#x3E;BBC&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; reported that Ukrainian troops had been forced to pull back from &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/9/15/2123135/-Ukraine-update-New-front-line-takes-shake-in-Kharkiv-Oblast&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;lines they had been defending&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; since Russian forces were driven out during the spectacular &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2022/9/7/2121296/-Ukraine-update-A-huge-day-as-Ukraine-advances-in-every-area&#x22;&#x3E;Ukrainian counteroffensive&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; in the fall of 2022.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  331.
  332. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Now several of the villages and towns that Ukraine fought so hard to liberate are once again being swarmed by Russian troops and the prospect of stopping them looks as difficult as it did when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  370. <title>A school board member campaigned against indoctrinating kids. Then she read the curriculum</title>

  372. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Courtney Gore, a Granbury ISD school board member, has disavowed the far-right platform she campaigned on. Her defiance has brought her backlash.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  373.
  374. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;By Jeremy Schwartz, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/15/texas-granbury-isd-school-board-courtney-gore/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;The Texas Tribune&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;and ProPublica&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  375.
  376. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Weeks after winning a school board seat in her deeply red Texas county, Courtney Gore immersed herself in the district&#x2019;s curriculum, spending her nights and weekends poring over hundreds of pages of lesson plans that she had fanned out on the coffee table in her living room and even across her bed. She was searching for evidence of the sweeping national movement she had warned on the campaign trail was indoctrinating schoolchildren.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  377.
  378. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Gore, the co-host of a far-right online talk show, had promised that she would be a strong Republican voice on the nonpartisan school board. Citing &#x201C;small town, conservative Christian values,&#x201D; she pledged to inspect educational materials for inappropriate messages about sexuality and race and remove them from every campus in the 7,700-student Granbury Independent School District, an hour southwest of Fort Worth.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  379.
  380. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Over the years our American Education System has been hijacked by Leftists looking to indoctrinate our kids into the &#x2018;progressive&#x2019; way of thinking, and yes, they&#x2019;ve tried to do this in Granbury ISD,&#x201D; she wrote in a September 2021 Facebook post, two months before the election. &#x201C;I cannot sit by and watch their twisted worldview infiltrate Granbury ISD.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  381.
  382. &#x3C;p&#x3E;But after taking office and examining hundreds of pages of curriculum, Gore was shocked by what she found&#x2014;and didn&#x2019;t find.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  446. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Seventy years ago this week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled separating children in schools by race was unconstitutional. On paper, that decision&#x2014;the fabled&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/brown-education-court-voice-cloning-5945543950b43514469fdc62c8aa44d4&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Brown v. Board of Education&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, taught in most every U.S. classroom&#x2014;still stands.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  447.
  448. &#x3C;p&#x3E;But for decades, U.S. schools have been re-segregating. The country is more diverse than it ever has been, with students more exposed to classmates from different backgrounds. Still, around four&#x26;nbsp;out of 10 Black and Hispanic students attend schools where almost every one of their classmates is another student of color.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  469. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;By Makenzie Huber, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://southdakotasearchlight.com/2024/05/14/anti-abortion-group-behind-calls-labeled-scam-sd-secretary-state-abortion/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;South Dakota Searchlight&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  470.
  471. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Hundreds of phone calls this week that the South Dakota secretary of state has labeled a &#x201C;scam&#x201D; are originating from an anti-abortion group seeking to disqualify an abortion-rights ballot measure.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  472.
  473. &#x3C;p&#x3E;A petition was &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://southdakotasearchlight.com/2024/05/01/group-submits-abortion-ballot-petitions-as-opponents-pledge-legal-challenge/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;submitted last week&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to the Secretary of State&#x2019;s Office with enough signatures to place the measure on the Nov. 5 ballot, but the signatures must undergo a validation process.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  474.
  475. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Earlier this year, the legislature and Gov. Kristi Noem passed legislation allowing people to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://southdakotasearchlight.com/2024/03/19/noem-signs-abortion-video-mandate-petition-signature-withdrawal-process/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;withdraw their signatures from petitions&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  476.
  477. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Rachel Soulek, elections director with the Secretary of State&#x2019;s Office, said the callers are capitalizing on the new law.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  478.
  479. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;This is the first time we are seeing this and it&#x2019;s a result of the law change to allow individuals to remove their name from a ballot measure up till the point it is validated in our office,&#x201D; Soulek told South Dakota Searchlight through email.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  510. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Foreign terrorist organizations or supporters may seek to exploit increased gatherings associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month,&#x201D; the agencies wrote.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  660. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Missouri Democrats &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://missouriindependent.com/2024/05/17/missouri-session-initiative-petition-senate/&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;scored a major win&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; on Friday after Republicans abandoned their effort &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/2/23/2225398/-GOP-plan-would-make-amending-Missouri-constitution-harder-for-liberals-but-not-conservatives&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;to make it harder&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; to amend the state constitution. The victory paves the way for a ballot measure that would restore abortion rights to pass with just a simple majority this fall.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  661.
  662. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The stunning climb-down came thanks to a &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.kcur.org/politics-elections-and-government/2024-05-16/missouri-gop-rethink-bill-making-it-harder-to-change-constitution-after-record-setting-filibuster&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;record-breaking Democratic filibuster&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; and bitter internal divisions among Republicans, both between warring factions in the Senate and between the upper and lower chambers of the legislature.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  663.
  664. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Republicans were open about their desire to thwart an effort to undo Missouri&#x27;s near-total ban on abortion by moving the goalposts for an amendment that&#x27;s likely to appear on the ballot in November.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  665.
  666. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;To that end, they sought to place a measure on the Aug. 6 primary ballot&#x2014;just ahead of the November vote&#x2014;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/2/23/2225398/-GOP-plan-would-make-amending-Missouri-constitution-harder-for-liberals-but-not-conservatives&#x22;&#x3E;that would require amendments&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; to win not only majority support among voters statewide, as is currently required, but also a majority in five of the state&#x27;s eight congressional districts.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  667.
  668. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Those rules would have made it much harder to pass progressive proposals&#x2014;but not conservative measures&#x2014;thanks in large part to Republican gerrymandering.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  685. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://news.bloomberglaw.com/us-law-week/justice-alito-urged-to-recuse-from-courts-jan-6-related-cases&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;issued a sternly worded statement&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; Thursday calling on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito to recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 insurrection. The New York Times &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html?unlocked_article_code=1.sk0.cIti.HCssZabNiISP&#x26;amp;smid=url-share&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;reported&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; that an upside-down American flag was seen flying at his home for several days following the attack on the Capitol.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  686.
  687. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;This follows &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/02/07/congress/durbin-thomas-scotus-trump-2024-ballot-eligibility-00140147&#x22;&#x3E;a similar call&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; from Durbin for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself on these issues, and it will probably be heeded by Alito as much as it was by Thomas: not at all.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  688.
  689. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Enough talk, Mr. Durbin. It&#x2019;s time to do something.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  743. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Rachel Maddow spoke with MSNBC&#x2019;s Alex Wagner Thursday about Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito after &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html&#x22;&#x3E;The New York Times reported&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; that an &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/17/2241165/-Samuel-Alito-s-flag-is-upside-down-So-is-the-Supreme-Court?pm_campaign=front_page&#x26;amp;pm_source=top_news_slot_1&#x26;amp;pm_medium=web&#x22;&#x3E;upside-down American flag&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; was seen flying over his home in the weeks following the Jan. 6 insurrection. The inverted flag became a &#x201C;Stop the Steal&#x201D; symbol for Donald Trump&#x2019;s supporters who were trying to overturn the 2020 election results.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  744.
  745. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Alito&#x2019;s upside-down flag was seen on Jan. 17, 2021, which is when the Supreme Court was considering whether to hear a case regarding the results of the 2020 election.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  746.
  747. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x201C;It&#x27;s unsettling. It&#x27;s gross,&#x201D; Maddow said.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  808. <title>Samuel Alito&#x27;s flag is upside down. So is the Supreme Court</title>
  809. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/17/2241165/-Samuel-Alito-s-flag-is-upside-down-So-is-the-Supreme-Court?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  810. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The New York Times&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; reported on Thursday evening that an upside-down American flag was seen flying over Justice Samuel Alito&#x2019;s home in the weeks following the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol. The inverted flag&#x2014;historically, signifying an emergency&#x2014;became &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://qz.com/1953366/decoding-the-pro-trump-insurrectionist-flags-and-banners&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;a symbol for Donald Trump supporters&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; who wanted to overturn the 2020 election.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  811.
  812. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Images show the flag flying at Alito&#x2019;s home on Jan. 17, while the Supreme Court was &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/20pdf/20-542_2c83.pdf&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;considering whether to hear a case&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; involving results of the 2020 election.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  813.
  814. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Alito is blaming the pro-Trump flag on his wife. In an email statement to the Times, Alito wrote, &#x201C;I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag. It was briefly placed by Mrs. Alito in response to a neighbor&#x2019;s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.&#x201D;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  815.
  816. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The sign in the neighbor&#x2019;s yard was reportedly an &#x201C;anti-Trump&#x201D; sign. While there is reporting that Martha-Ann Alito argued with neighbors over the sign, there&#x2019;s no indication that it included language personally attacking her or her husband. Even if it had, that wouldn&#x2019;t validate a Supreme Court justice making a clear signal of political preference on issues before the court.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  817.
  818. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;How long Alito flew the flag isn&#x2019;t clear, though it was there for several days, according to one email the Times reviewed&#x2014; but judicial experts consulted by the &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/16/us/justice-alito-upside-down-flag.html&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Times&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; say that this was a &#x201C;clear violation of ethics rules.&#x201D;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  840.
  841. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Nearly half of Americans said they were following the trial at least somewhat closely, at 48%, while 52% said they were not.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  842.
  843. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Still, the trial itself appears to be affecting public opinion. Before the trial began last month, the same poll &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://d3nkl3psvxxpe9.cloudfront.net/documents/20240415_yahoo_tabs.pdf&#x22;&#x3E;found&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; that 48% believed Trump had falsified documents&#x2014;a 4-point increase and a 7-point increase since March 2023.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  972.
  973. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.thedailybeast.com/all-signs-point-to-a-trump-debate-meltdown&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;David Rothkopf&#x3C;/a&#x3E;/Daily Beast:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  977.
  978. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;Biden is eager for the chance to stand toe-to-toe with his predecessor because it will be incredibly hard to look worse in comparison.&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  979.
  980. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Of course,&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/p/alsobrooks-rocks-it-good-inflation&#x22;&#x3E;Biden actually isn&#x2019;t behind Trump in the polls&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, with most showing the race essentially tied&#x2014;and several including the most recent NYT Ipsos poll showing Biden up by 3. Further, the idea that &#x201C;age&#x201D; is an issue for two guys who are essentially the same age, is one that does not stand up to the slightest scrutiny. But never mind all that.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  981.
  982. &#x3C;p&#x3E;No, after talking to a number of Biden administration officials, it is clear that the primary reason Joe Biden chose to debate Donald Trump is&#x2026; because he can win.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1044. <title>Caribbean Matters: Flooding worsens amid predictions of severe hurricane season</title>
  1045. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/16/2239931/-Caribbean-Matters-Flooding-worsens-amid-predictions-of-severe-hurricane-season?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  1046. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;A scary time of year is approaching as the&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; Atlantic hurricane season&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; is usually predicted to take place from June 1 through Nov. 30, and &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.noaa.gov/hurricane-prep&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;National Hurricane Preparedness Week&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; took place last week here in the U.S. from May 5 to 11. I have frequently criticized our media for paying too little attention to Caribbean weather events. News organizations tend to focus on storms that may wind up hitting Florida or the Gulf Coast, ignoring mitigation efforts and the impact on island nations that sit on the front lines.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1047.
  1048. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Though most of us remember Hurricanes Maria, Irma, and Katrina, I rarely hear mention of&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://stlucia.loopnews.com/content/5-deadliest-hurricanes-hit-caribbean-past-40-years-3&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;these catastrophic Caribbean events&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;: Hurricane Gordon&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E; &#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;(which hit in 1994 and resulted in 1,152 deaths); Hurricane David (hit in 1979 and caused 2,068 deaths); and Hurricane Jeanne (hit in 2004 and resulted in 3,037 deaths).&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1049.
  1050. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Major Caribbean weather monitoring sources are predicting serious storms this year, and flooding already happening in island nations has been overlooked in reports of massive flooding in other areas of the globe.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1051.
  1052. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/tags/CaribbeanMatters&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Caribbean Matters&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E; is a weekly series from Daily Kos.   1070. <title>For Vladimir Putin, Trump&#x27;s VP choice couldn&#x27;t be any clearer</title>
  1071. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/16/2240816/-For-Vladimir-Putin-Trump-s-VP-choice-couldn-t-be-any-clearer?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  1072. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;As Americans witness the spectacle of a grimacing Donald Trump, fidgeting nervously as he faces criminal charges in a Manhattan courtroom, an even more consequential drama continues to unfold some 5,000 miles away, where the Russian military is capitalizing on the months-long effort of Vladimir Putin&#x2019;s GOP puppets to withhold military aid to Ukraine.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1073.
  1074. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Whether that delay,&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4595464-freedom-caucus-iran-attack-on-israel-sets-up-bogus-reason-to-pass-ukraine-aid/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;caused by&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; members of the GOP House&#x2019;s so-called &#x201C;Freedom Caucus,&#x201D; seals Ukraine&#x2019;s fate has yet to be seen.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1075.
  1076. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;As&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/14/us/politics/russia-momentum-ukraine-war.html&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;The New York Times&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x2019; David Sanger, Julian E. Barnes, and Kim Barker wrote, &#x201C;Because of the delay in U.S. funding, Russia has been able to achieve a huge artillery advantage over Ukraine.&#x201D;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1077.
  1078. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Former national security adviser Steven Hadley observed that the lack of adequate air defense ammunition has allowed Russia to employ its &#x201C;glide bombs&#x201D; fairly at will, degrading Ukraine&#x2019;s civil defenses and terrorizing the Ukrainian population even further, according to the Times.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1079.
  1080. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;While the media seems unable to comprehend how Trump&#x2019;s difficulties connect to larger geopolitical ramifications, Putin is surely watching the New York proceedings with great interest. Putin most certainly does not want to prosecute his war with another four years of President Joe Biden in office, particularly with a potential Democratic House in place, allocating further aid to Ukraine next year. For the first time in his life, he actually &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;needs&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; Trump.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1081.

Given the gravity of his pending criminal indictments&#x2014;and barring some miraculous ruling in his favor from the U.S. Supreme Court&#x2014;winning the 2024 election might be the only conceivable means for Trump to avoid facing &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2023/09/donald-trump-prison-fears&#x22;&#x3E;serious legal repercussions&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;.   1134. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;A Travis County jury sentenced Perry to 25 years in prison last year, prompting Abbott to ask the state parole board to review his case.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1136. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;By William Melhado, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.texastribune.org/2024/05/16/daniel-perry-greg-abbott-pardon/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;The Texas Tribune&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1137.
  1138. &#x3C;p&#x3E;More than a year after a Travis County jury convicted Daniel Perry of murdering a protester in Austin, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott pardoned the former U.S. Army sergeant on Thursday shortly after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended a full pardon.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1139.
  1140. &#x3C;p&#x3E;A Texas state district court judge sentenced Perry in May 2023 to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing U.S. Air Force veteran Garrett Foster during a 2020 demonstration protesting police brutality against people of color.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1141.
  1142. &#x3C;p&#x3E;One day after a jury convicted Perry, Abbott directed the parole board to review the former U.S. Army sergeant&#x2019;s case.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1143.
  1144. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;Among the voluminous files reviewed by the Board, they considered information provided by the Travis County District Attorney, the full investigative report on Daniel Perry, plus a review of all the testimony provided at trial,&#x201D; Abbott said in a statement announcing the proclamation that absolved Perry. &#x201C;Texas has one of the strongest &#x2018;Stand Your Ground&#x2019; laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1145.
  1146. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Abbott approved the board&#x2019;s recommendation, which included restoration of Perry&#x2019;s firearm rights.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1147.
  1148. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;The members of the Board of Pardons and Paroles delved into the intricacies of Perry&#x2019;s case. The investigative efforts encompassed a meticulous review of pertinent documents, from police reports to court records, witness statements, and interviews with individuals linked to the case,&#x201D; the pardon board wrote in a Thursday statement.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1175. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;When it comes to actually creating wealth through the stock market, it&#x27;s hard to do better than President Joe Biden. Not only has the market&#x2019;s performance under Biden &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-stock-markets-performance-under-biden-is-now-better-than-under-trump-but-a-big-factor-is-covids-toll-in-2020-b655d1e8&#x22;&#x3E;outpaced Trump&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, but all three major indexes hit &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://thehill.com/business/4666442-all-three-major-stock-indexes-close-at-record-highs/&#x22;&#x3E;new record highs&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; on Wednesday. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Index &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.wsj.com/finance/stocks/dow-jones-industrial-average-tops-40000-for-the-first-time-52f316a1&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;cracked the 40,000 barrier&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; for the first time.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1176.
  1177. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;While it&#x2019;s widely known that this benefits the wealthy, it&#x2019;s actually also great news for the &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.census.gov/library/stories/2022/08/who-has-retirement-accounts.html&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;53% of workers&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; who have a 401(k) or an individual retirement account. In fact, Biden&#x27;s stock market boom has created &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://finance.yahoo.com/news/soaring-number-of-americans-are-now-401k-millionaires-100001736.html&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;a record number of 401(k) millionaires&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, providing Americans with flexibility and security when it comes time to retire.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1178.
  1179. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Biden is doing this while holding unemployment &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/1/2238335/-US-job-openings-fall-to-their-lowest-in-more-than-3-years&#x22;&#x3E;at record lows&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, driving inflation &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/feds-mester-seeks-more-evidence-inflation-pressures-are-easing-2024-05-16/&#x22;&#x3E;down&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, and creating thousands of &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/phoenix-arizona-intel-chips-act-biden-rcna144029&#x22;&#x3E;new manufacturing jobs&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;. But if regular people are benefiting from Biden&#x27;s growing economy and investments in the nation, there&#x27;s one group anxious to welcome back the chaos and uncertainty of Donald Trump: ultra-wealthy Republican donors.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1205. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The House Judiciary Committee&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.congress.gov/committees/video/house-judiciary/hsju00&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; met on Thursday&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; to discuss whether to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/16/2240999/-White-House-blocks-release-of-Biden-s-special-counsel-interview-audio&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;contempt of Congress.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; The charge? That the Department of Justice has refused to hand over the audio recording of President Joe Biden&#x2019;s interview with special counsel Robert Hur. The DOJ has already turned over a transcript of the interview.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1206.
  1207. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;The president asserted executive privilege over the recording earlier on Thursday, but that didn&#x2019;t stop the GOP-controlled committee from plowing ahead.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1208.
  1209. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Ranking Democrat Jerry Nadler wasted no time slamming committee chair Jim Jordan and his partisan political theater.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1210.
  1211. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;Chairman Jordan consistently opposes government spending, and everything from feeding children to education and health care, has spent $20 million taxpayer dollars in this Congress to investigate his various conspiracy theories,&#x201D; Nadler said. &#x201C;And what exactly has he delivered to the American people on their $20 million investment? Exactly. Nothing.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1212.
  1213. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;This entire exercise, Nadler continued, is an attempt by Republicans to smear Biden on behalf of Donald Trump. Republicans are hoping that the audio recording will embarrass Biden and make him appear old and mentally incompetent.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1214.
  1215. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;What Republicans won&#x27;t show you,&#x201D; Nadler said, &#x201C;is the mounting evidence that Trump is mentally incompetent to hold the office of the president.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1216.
  1217. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Nadler scoffed at Trump&#x2019;s &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/05/13/trump-hannibal-lecter-rally-in-new-jersey/73675338007/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;inexplicable praise&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; at a recent rally of the fictional character Hannibal Lecter from &#x201C;The Silence of the Lambs.&#x201D;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1218.
  1219. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;&#x2019;The late, great Hannibal Lecter,&#x2019;&#x201D; Nadler quoted Trump. &#x201C;I can&#x27;t even begin to understand how Republicans have chosen this man as their champion. But they have. And now House Republicans are paying for it by flocking to the sidelines of his criminal trial, sacrificing their integrity to defend them against, frankly, indefensible acts.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1220.
  1221. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Nadler finished where he began, calling out Jordan&#x2019;s waste of the public&#x2019;s trust.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1222.
  1223. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x201C;This markup may give Donald Trump something to watch on Fox when he gets home from his criminal trial tonight,&#x201D; Nadler said, &#x201C;but it will almost certainly not convince the Department of Justice to produce the one remaining file in question.&#x201D;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1256. <title>Live coverage: Michael Cohen faces cross-examination from Trump&#x27;s legal team</title>
  1257. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/16/2240993/-Live-coverage-Michael-Cohen-faces-cross-examination-from-Trump-s-legal-team?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  1258. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Michael Cohen will face cross-examination on Thursday at Donald Trump&#x2019;s trial for falsifying documents to protect his campaign in the 2016 election.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1259.
  1260. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/14/2240614/-Live-coverage-Michael-Cohen-testifies-at-Trump-trial-for-second-day&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;completed Cohen&#x2019;s direct questioning&#x3C;/a&#x3E; just before the lunch break on Tuesday after walking Trump&#x2019;s former attorney through&#x26;nbsp;the documents at the heart of the indictment. Cohen&#x26;nbsp;confirmed&#x26;nbsp;that the scheme to reimburse his payment to Stormy Daniels was at Trump&#x2019;s direction and with his ongoing knowledge. It wasn&#x2019;t spectacular, but it was the key testimony of this trial.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1261.
  1262. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Cohen spent Tuesday afternoon being cross-examined by Trump&#x2019;s lead attorney Todd Blanche. While Blanche&#x2019;s questioning opened with aggressive statements that earned him a series of objections, most of the afternoon&#x26;nbsp;was surprisingly calm.&#x26;nbsp;By all accounts, Cohen held his composure and provided brief, to-the-point responses. When he did give something more than a yes or no, the answers were often humorous.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1263.
  1264. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Blanche spent much of his time building a portrait of Cohen as a devoted Trump follower, one willing to suffer humiliation to gain approval from Trump, who became disillusioned after Trump won the election and set aside some of his more inconvenient acquaintances. Ultimately, an isolated and insecure Cohen flipped on Trump, provided information in the various investigations, and ended up obsessed with getting revenge on a guy he used to admire.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1265.
  1266. &#x3C;p&#x3E;That&#x2019;s a pretty accurate portrait, but it&#x2019;s one that was already familiar to the jury. In fact, it&#x2019;s the same portrait that was sketched during the prosecution&#x2019;s questioning.&#x26;nbsp;Other than reading a few amusing monikers into the record&#x2014;Cohen called Trump &#x201C;Dictator Douchebag&#x201D; and &#x201C;Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain&#x201D;&#x2014;Blanche revealed little that was new.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1267.
  1268. &#x3C;p&#x3E;There was one thing notably missing from Blanche&#x2019;s questions on Tuesday: anything to do with this case. The entire time was spent trying to attack Cohen&#x2019;s credibility, providing a motive for revenge, or painting him as a fame-driven hater. None of the time was spent questioning Cohen&#x2019;s testimony in this case.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1269.
  1270. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Presumably, Cohen will get around to talking about this case on Thursday.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1310. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;At a Wisconsin rally last month, Donald Trump&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://nypost.com/2024/04/02/us-news/trump-says-hes-ready-to-debate-biden-anytime-anyplace/&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;bragged&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; that he would debate President Joe Biden &#x22;anytime, anyplace.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1311.
  1312. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;We&#x27;ll do it anyway you want, Joe,&#x22; he said.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1313.
  1314. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Biden unexpectedly called his bluff Wednesday with a pugnacious flair that left Trump no choice but to accept.&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1315.
  1316. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x22;Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020,&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/status/1790713878248038478&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; &#x3C;/span&#x3E;Biden said&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;. &#x22;Now he&#x2019;s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I&#x27;ll even do it twice.&#x22;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1317.
  1318. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Trump quickly accepted, he had no choice.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1336. <description>&#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:left&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;The legislation deletes more than 50 lines of previous state statutes dealing with climate change.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1338. &#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:left&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;By Mitch Perry, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://floridaphoenix.com/2024/05/15/desantis-signs-bill-erasing-the-term-climate-change-from-state-law/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Florida Phoenix&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1339.
  1340. &#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:left&#x22;&#x3E;Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation (&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Bills/billsdetail.aspx?BillId=80357&#x26;amp;SessionId=103&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;HB 1645&#x3C;/a&#x3E;) on Wednesday that will erase several instances of the words &#x201C;climate change&#x201D; from state statutes and restructure the state&#x2019;s fossil fuel-based energy policy that listed climate change as a priority when making energy policy decisions.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1341.
  1342. &#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:left&#x22;&#x3E;The priority now is to ensure &#x201C;an adequate, reliable, and cost-effective supply of energy for the state in a manner that promotes the health and welfare of the public and economic growth,&#x201D; as spelled out in &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://myfloridahouse.gov/Sections/Documents/loaddoc.aspx?FileName=h1645z.ECC.DOCX&#x26;amp;DocumentType=Analysis&#x26;amp;BillNumber=1645&#x26;amp;Session=2024&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;a legislative analysis&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1343.
  1344. &#x3C;p style=&#x22;text-align:left&#x22;&#x3E;&#x201C;Florida rejects the designs of the left to weaken our energy grid, pursue a radical climate agenda, and promote foreign adversaries,&#x201D; DeSantis said on&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/GovRonDeSantis/status/1790834198682480874&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;X&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;on Wednesday afternoon. The message included a statement reading, &#x201C;Radical green zealots want to impose their climate agenda on people through restrictions, regulations, and taxes.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1367. <title>Republicans are ditching their day jobs to do Trump&#x27;s dirty work</title>
  1368. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/16/2240913/-Republicans-are-ditching-their-day-jobs-to-do-Trump-s-dirty-work?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  1369. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;It&#x2019;s official: Visiting Donald Trump at his criminal trial in New York is &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;the&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; thing to do in the Republican Party.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1370.
  1371. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/13/2240477/-Trump-toadies-are-flocking-to-his-New-York-trial-to-kiss-the-ring&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Last week&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, it was his fellow Floridian Sen. Rick Scott who made the pilgrimage. Then Sens. J.D. Vance and Tommy Tuberville. And Rep. Nicole Malliotakis. Then &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/14/2240667/-House-Speaker-Mike-Johnson-joins-the-clown-show-at-Trump-s-trial&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;House Speaker Mike Johnson&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; showed up.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1372.
  1373. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;And now, well, maybe it would be easier to name the Republicans who &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;aren&#x2019;t&#x3C;/em&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E; planning to literally stand by their man. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2024/05/15/congress/hfc-talking-trump-trial-visit-00158126&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;According to Politico&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;, a whole mess of House Republicans&#x2014;approximately 16 members of the Freedom Caucus&#x2014;are planning a trip to the Big Apple, though most of them don&#x2019;t want to talk about it.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1374.
  1375. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x201C;You won&#x2019;t find anybody who will say anything,&#x201D; South Carolina Rep. Ralph Norman said. Maybe they don&#x2019;t want to talk about it, but &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://twitter.com/AnnieGrayerCNN/status/1790899978623156574&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;CNN&#x2019;s Annie Grayer reports&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x26;nbsp;that the House Oversight Committee is delaying its &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/15/2240866/-House-GOP-targets-attorney-general-after-failing-to-dig-up-dirt-on-Biden&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22;&#x3E;Thursday hearing&#x3C;/a&#x3E; about holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt so its members can attend the trial in New York.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1376.
  1377. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;So why is it so important for them to journey north to sit in the courtroom&#x2014;the very cold courtroom, &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/4/26/2237510/-Trump-s-main-complaint-about-being-on-trial-The-freezing-courtroom&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;according to Trump&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x2014;when they ostensibly have day jobs to do?&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

  1459. <title>White House blocks release of Biden&#x2019;s special counsel interview audio</title>
  1460. <link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2024/5/16/2240999/-White-House-blocks-release-of-Biden-s-special-counsel-interview-audio?pm_campaign=blog&#x26;pm_medium=rss&#x26;pm_source=</link>
  1461. <description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;President Joe Biden has asserted executive privilege over audio of his interview with &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-beau-special-counsel-80eaaee6de62c0c7b455c03d39502ecb&#x22;&#x3E;special counsel Robert Hur&#x3C;/a&#x3E; that&#x27;s at the center a Republican effort to hold &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/hub/merrick-garland&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;Attorney General Merrick Garland&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in contempt of Congress, the Justice Department told lawmakers on Thursday.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1462.
  1463. &#x3C;p&#x3E;It comes as the the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and the Judiciary Committee are each expected to hold a hearing to recommend that the full House refer Garland to the Justice Department for &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/biden-classified-documents-congress-garland-contempt-7db112d63dd1e8159593c32981caa85d&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;the contempt charges&#x3C;/a&#x3E; over the department&#x27;s refusal to hand over the audio.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1464.
  1465. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Garland advised Biden in a letter on Thursday that the audio falls within the scope of executive privilege. Garland told the Democratic president that the &#x201C;committee&#x27;s needs are plainly insufficient to outweigh the deleterious effects that the production of the recordings would have on the integrity and effectiveness of similar law enforcement investigations in the future.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1466.
  1467. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte urged lawmakers not to proceed with the contempt effort to avoid &#x201C;unnecessary and unwarranted conflict.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1468.
  1469. &#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x201C;It is the longstanding position of the executive branch held by administrations of both parties that an official who asserts the president&#x27;s claim of executive privilege cannot be held in contempt of Congress,&#x201D; Uriarte wrote.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1470.
  1471. &#x3C;p&#x3E;White House Counsel Ed Siskel wrote in a separate, scathing letter to Congress on Thursday that lawmakers&#x27; effort to obtain the recording was absent any legitimate purpose and lays bare their likely goal &#x2014; &#x22;to chop them up, distort them, and use them for partisan political purposes.&#x201D;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1472.
  1473. &#x3C;p&#x3E;The White House letter is a tacit admission that there are moments from the interview it fears portray Biden in a negative light in an election year &#x2014; and that could be exacerbated by the release, or selective release, of the audio.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1474.
  1475. &#x3C;p&#x3E;The transcript of &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/biden-classified-documents-age-trump-2024-4791639cc06cc0affee55aba80c7e6b3&#x22;&#x3E;the Hur interview&#x3C;/a&#x3E; showed Biden struggling to recall some dates and occasionally confusing some details &#x2014; something longtime aides says he&#x2019;s done for years in both public and private &#x2014; but otherwise showing deep recall in other areas. Biden and his aides are particularly sensitive to questions about his age. At 81, he&#x2019;s &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://apnews.com/article/biden-birthday-81-age-trump-axelrod-polling-3325ad9d260c17be97d5608349378a91&#x22;&#x3E;the oldest ever president&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, and he&#x27;s seeking another four year term.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1476.
  1477. &#x3C;p&#x3E;Hur found some evidence that Biden had willfully retained classified information and disclosed it to a ghostwriter but concluded that it was insufficient for criminal charges.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
  1478.
