233. <p>It was daunting when the Rev.cBrandon Thomas Crowley, at age 22, replaced a beloved pastor who had ministered to one of suburban Boston’s most famed Black churches for 24 years.</p>

What is even more interesting is the fact that for many of his famous tunes, like &#x201C;Ain&#x2019;t Misbehavin&#x2019;&#x201D; and &#x201C;Honeysuckle Rose,&#x201D; his lyricist was a man named Andy Razaf, who was born in the U.S. but whose mother fled Madagascar when her husband, a nephew of the queen, was murdered during the French invasion and takeover. Pregnant, the 15-year-old was able to escape to the U.S. where she gave birth to her son, a hereditary prince, in Washington, D.C., in 1895.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

In 2022, he </span><a href="https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/justice-samuel-alitos-latest-political-speech-rankles-rcna40612">mocked those who criticized</a><span> his </span><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/07/conservative-justices-alito-hypocrisy-dobbs-plessy-ferguson-brown-board-education/661505/">ahistorical ruling</a><span> in </span><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/05/alito-leaked-roe-opinion-abortion-supreme-court-civil-rights/629748/" title="">the <em>Dobbs</em> case</a><span>, which has led to a patchwork of laws that subject women to a gender-based regime of state force and surveillance. In </span><a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/06/23/samuel-alito-supreme-court-speaking-out/" title="">2023, he ran to the <em>Wall Street Journal</em></a><span> editorial page to defend himself after reporters uncovered his cozy relationship with a right-wing billionaire. A few days ago, </span><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/11/us/politics/justice-alito-freedom-speech-religion.html">he warned</a><span> that “support for freedom of speech is declining dangerously, especially where it should find deepest acceptance,” only he was echoing ubiquitous right-wing rhetoric about liberals on college campuses, not reflecting on Republican-controlled states </span><a href="https://pen.org/report/educational-intimidation/" title="">engaging in a massive campaign of outright censorship</a><span>. And despite all of these public statements attacking the left, particularly on matters of free speech, Alito has amassed a </span><a href="https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2010/04/justice-alito-s-double-standard-for-the-first-amendment.html" title="">jurisprudential record</a><span> suggesting that his </span><a href="https://knightcolumbia.org/content/free-speech-jurisprudence-justice-samuel-alito" title="">interpretation of the First Amendment</a><span> confers a </span><a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/09/salman-rushdie-attack-bari-weiss-free-speech/671318/" title="">right to monologue</a><span> on those who share his beliefs.</span></p>

1138. <p>More than a year after a Travis County jury convicted Daniel Perry of murdering a protester in Austin, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott pardoned the former U.S. Army sergeant on Thursday shortly after the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles recommended a full pardon.</p>

1140. <p>A Texas state district court judge sentenced Perry in May 2023 to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing U.S. Air Force veteran Garrett Foster during a 2020 demonstration protesting police brutality against people of color.</p>

1142. <p>One day after a jury convicted Perry, Abbott directed the parole board to review the former U.S. Army sergeant’s case.</p>

1144. <p>“Among the voluminous files reviewed by the Board, they considered information provided by the Travis County District Attorney, the full investigative report on Daniel Perry, plus a review of all the testimony provided at trial,” Abbott said in a statement announcing the proclamation that absolved Perry. “Texas has one of the strongest ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive District Attorney.”</p>

1260. <p>Prosecutor Susan Hoffinger <a href="https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/5/14/2240614/-Live-coverage-Michael-Cohen-testifies-at-Trump-trial-for-second-day" target="_blank">completed Cohen’s direct questioning</a> just before the lunch break on Tuesday after walking Trump’s former attorney through the documents at the heart of the indictment. Cohen confirmed that the scheme to reimburse his payment to Stormy Daniels was at Trump’s direction and with his ongoing knowledge. It wasn’t spectacular, but it was the key testimony of this trial.</p>

1262. <p>Cohen spent Tuesday afternoon being cross-examined by Trump’s lead attorney Todd Blanche. While Blanche’s questioning opened with aggressive statements that earned him a series of objections, most of the afternoon was surprisingly calm. By all accounts, Cohen held his composure and provided brief, to-the-point responses. When he did give something more than a yes or no, the answers were often humorous. </p>

1264. <p>Blanche spent much of his time building a portrait of Cohen as a devoted Trump follower, one willing to suffer humiliation to gain approval from Trump, who became disillusioned after Trump won the election and set aside some of his more inconvenient acquaintances. Ultimately, an isolated and insecure Cohen flipped on Trump, provided information in the various investigations, and ended up obsessed with getting revenge on a guy he used to admire.</p>

1266. <p>That’s a pretty accurate portrait, but it’s one that was already familiar to the jury. In fact, it’s the same portrait that was sketched during the prosecution’s questioning. Other than reading a few amusing monikers into the record—Cohen called Trump “Dictator Douchebag” and “Cheeto-dusted cartoon villain”—Blanche revealed little that was new.</p>

1268. <p>There was one thing notably missing from Blanche’s questions on Tuesday: anything to do with this case. The entire time was spent trying to attack Cohen’s credibility, providing a motive for revenge, or painting him as a fame-driven hater. None of the time was spent questioning Cohen’s testimony in this case.</p>
