Whether you live at the beach, have beach themed decor or just want to bring a bit of that sand and sea feeling into your summer decor, these beach cross stitch patterns are for you (and so are these beach inspired cross stitch patterns!).

 39.
Stitching Space has a pretty summer cross stitch pattern designed by Zefirnaya Vedma that includes a sandy beach, shells and starfish (as well as the word summer, but you could leave it off if you want). The design uses 27 colors and has whole, half and quarter stitches, so it’s for more intermediate or advanced stitches, but it sure is pretty! It is 80 by 106 stitches, which comes out to 14.5 by 19.2 cm or 5.7 by 7.5 inches when worked on 14 count fabric.

 40.
If you want to feel like you’re sitting in a deck chair on the beach, stitch up this project from The Little Art Veranda on Etsy. It features a pretty sunset in a cloudy sky alongside palm trees and chairs. It uses nine colors and is 140 by 140 stitches, which makes it 9.8 inches or 25 cm square on 14 count fabric.

 41.
Little Dove Samplers has a cute summer sampler with a pirate ship, lighthouse, seagulls, fish and more to stitch up. The colors used in the sample are really pretty together but you could also change the colors on the beach huts and fish if you wanted to. The design is 185 by 101 stitches, or 13.25 by 7.25 inches on 14 count fabric (that’s 33.6 by 18.4 cm).

 42.
Speaking of samplers, Hancock’s House of Happy has a free sampler style summer cross stitch pattern with little nautical symbols including ships, mermaids, crabs, seagulls and a lighthouse. You can use the individual motifs in projects or stitch up the full image as presented. As shown it uses 11 colors.

 43.
I feel like I have shared some of the beachy patterns from X Stitch Pattern X before but I can’t resist showing you this pretty round, which uses 12 colors and is 100 by 100 stitches. On 14 count fabric it’s 7.14 inches or 18.14 cm and uses only full cross stitches. Some day I’m going to make one of these!

Especially my cross stitch supplies.

 79.
I have all of my thread in a plastic zippered bag like you would get when you buy a set of sheets. Which at least keeps things from getting dusty, but when I need to find a particular color it’s hard to root through the jumble of threads, fabric and other random stuff that has ended up in that bag through the years.

 80.
Recently I did sort some of my floss by color because I needed to figure out what I had that I could use and what I needed to buy for a big project I wanted to start. But even after I organized them they all went back into the bag, which is not a great long-term solution.

 81.
Hannah Hand Makes has some help for us in the form of a podcast and blog post all about how to store cross stitch supplies. She goes through how she stores her cross stitch fabric, floss, hoops and frames, needle minders, needles, scissors, projects in progress or recently finished (or in hibernation) and finishing tools.

 82.
There are definitely some great tips in here, but I think the most important thing is that everything needs a well-organized and dedicated space. It’s also a great idea to keep things in smaller containers when possible because it’s easier to keep a small thing organized and to see what you have. She talks about how she converted to using bobbins for her thread and that having bobbins in boxes makes it easier to find what you need and keep everything contained. Definitely better than my random bag of floss!

We have Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July in a three-month span, and it feels like it’s always appropriate to have summer decor in red, white and blue.

 122.
Over the years I’ve shared plenty of patriotic cross stitch patterns (see Fourth of July cross stitch and American flag cross stitch, to name just a couple) but today I wanted to share some projects with patriotic sentiment that aren’t necessarily tied to a particular holiday.

 123.
For example, this America cross stitch pattern from The Elegant Thread. It uses seven colors and is 78 by 57 stitches, or 5.5 by 4 inches/13.9 by 10 cm on 14 count fabric. The pattern chart is free on their website.

 124.
Janlynn has a flag design shaped like a heart that is a free pattern on their website as well. Designed by Sandy Garbrandt, is measures 47 by 48 stitches and uses five colors for the cross stitching and three for back stitches. It measures 3.25 by 3.375 inches (8.2 by 8.5 cm) on 14 count fabric. This one is on a free patterns page; scroll down and click on the image and the PDF will download automatically.

 125.
This patriotic sunflower from Etsy seller Mamida Pattern is a perfect project for summer. Worked in just three colors, it measures 100 by 97 stitches, which comes out to 7.1 by 6.9 inches, or 18.1 by 17.6 cm when stitched on 14 count fabric.

 126.
America the Beautiful from The French Giraffe is made to fit in a 4 by 4 inch (10 by 10 cm) frame and is a great little project for a newer stitcher. It uses three colors and is 48 by 48 stitches.

 127.
Another one on the theme of “land that I love” is this pattern worked as a pillow from Calico Confectionery. This one has a vintage style with toned down colors, but you could choose bolder hues if you like. It measures 151 by 78 stitches and is shown on 16 count fabric.

 128.
On go with the classic text “We the People” styled as written in the preamble to the Constitution. This pattern is from Spring Rose Crafts and is shown stitched in black, but you could change it to red, white and blue if you wanted. It measures 5 by 14 inches (12.7 by 35.5 cm) stitched on 14-count fabric.

Then I add in designers I want to write about, often at random from people I’m seeing online or on Etsy. Then I fill in some educational stuff and call it a month.

 166.
Generally I’m not looking for patterns to share at the same time I’m picking designers to share, so it’s serendipitous that this week’s designer spotlight went to Mamida Pattern, which was also featured in the recent roundup of dog cross stitch patterns.

 167.
This Etsy shop does a lot more than stitching up funny dogs, though. It was actually their seasonal and holiday patterns that caught my eye. These projects are colorful, fun and mostly look pretty easy to knit. There are lots of animals, and since we’re allowed to talk about cats again, I wanted to highlight this super cute stained glass style cat cross stitch pattern (I am, after all, a cat person).

 168.
It calls for 13 colors and is 57 by 99 stitches, that comes out to 10.3 by 18 inches or 4.1 by 7.1 cm on 14 count fabric. You can really use any colors you want and make this a total stash-busting project if you like. I would love to have this one in my office.

 169.
As I mentioned there are a lot of holiday designs, including Christmas, Halloween and fall/Thanksgiving patterns. These designs are cute and cheerful, and even the Halloween ones are more cute than creepy.

 170.
The storefront has more than 300 patterns as of this writing, so it’s hard to classify them all, but you can go check them out at Mamaida Pattern. The shop also has a deal where if you buy two or more patterns at once you get 50 percent off, so go check it out!

 207.
I recently published a post all about how to cross stitch, and while it might not be totally “done,” I think it’s a good start for anyone wanting to learn or who might need a refresher on the basics.

 208.
The post covers everything from the basic supplies you need to get started to questions like, does cross stitch fabric have a front side? or do you need to use a hoop?

 209.
It covers how big to make your fabric, how to find the center of the fabric and the pattern, how to use a hoop and get your embroidery floss ready, where and how to start stitching, full and partial stitches and more.

 210.
I feel like a lot of the stuff I share over here assumes basic knowledge of cross stitch, but I know that’s not always the case and we want to be welcoming to stitchers of all skill levels. If we’re being honest I’m not all that advanced myself, but I am (very slowly) working on a big and super colorful cross stitch pattern for the first time in a long time, which will probably boost my skills pretty quickly.

 211.
If you are a beginner and you have a question I haven’t answered, drop a comment here. Or if you’re a more seasoned stitcher and you have a tip or notice something that I didn’t cover, let me know that, too! We’re all learning here together and sharing the joy of stitching.

I’d actually been saving up this punny hot dog pattern for a while, so it was the perfect starting point for a collection of funny dog cross stitch patterns.

 250.
This one is from My Darling Plum, and it features a dachshund crossed with a hot dog. It calls for six colors and uses whole and half stitches, as well as back stitching and French knots. On 14 count fabric it measures 3.5 by 2.4 inches, or 8.89 by 6 cm, but the pattern includes sizing for different stitch counts if you want to make it smaller and turn it into an ornament or card.

 251.
Snoopy has the right idea in this simple cross stitch pattern from Mamaida Pattern that just says Nope. It uses three colors and would be a good one for a new stitcher. It measures 64 by 37 stitches, which is 4.6 by 2.6 inches or 11.6 by 6.7 cm on 14 count fabric (this one also shows different counts if you want ti to be smaller).

 252.
This sweet dog face is sure to bring a smile to your face! This little Shiba Inu from Rainbow Hunt XStitch fully fills a three-inch hoop and measures 41 by 41 stitches. It uses 12 colors. The designer has a couple of other dog faces and quite a few cats as well, but this is a dog post so we won’t talk about that.

 253.
And of course funny dog cross stitch patterns don’t actually have to include dogs. Like this one from Cross Stitch Traveler that lets everyone know who is really in charge in your household (yes, it’s the dog). It uses seven colors, but you could easily change the colors on the leaves to suit your decor if you want. The piece measures 138 by 134 stitches, or 9.75 by 9.5 inches/25 by 24.3 cm on 14 count fabric.

 254.
Or you can remind people that going out with you will always take longer than they think if there are dogs around. This one is from Helen’s Crossing and is available as a pattern or a full kit. The kit uses 14 count fabric and an 8 inch hoop, and the design is 84 by 78 stitches.

 293.
According to their shop description, they feature designs with an “ornamental country style” inspired by cottages, country landscapes, primitive and folk art, as well as Americana and samplers from the colonial and Quaker eras, and American and European samplers.

 294.
As of this writing they have a little more than 30 designs, which definitely have an early America feel to them.

 295.
I love the Day to Night pattern, which features a little house and a big sky changing from day to night that looks like quilt blocks. There are actually several patterns that feature stars or snowflakes or other designs evocative of quilt blocks or knitting colorwork designs, which just goes to show that all crafts are connected.

 296.
There are historical samplers as well as designs made with more modern quotes (like “The time is always right to do what is right” from Martin Luther King, Jr.). And of course the one pictured, called Bookhouse, which features a quote from Neil Gaiman: “I lived in books more than I lived anywhere else.”

 297.
The design features two trees (the leaves are meant to evoke books) and a tall house with a light left on in a window for the reader in the house (which looks a little bit like a TARDIS, though I don’t know if that’s intentional). The design was inspired by classic book covers. It measures 93 by 81 stitches, or 5.8 by 5.1 inches (14.7 by 12.9 cm) when worked on 16 count fabric and uses only full stitches and some back stitching on the book spines.

 298.
This would be a great one for a library or to put on a bookshelf.

 299.
You can check out all the designs with a classic feel even though they might have modern content at the Stone Street Stitchworks Etsy shop.

Really just a bit of fabric, some embroidery floss and a needle are all that you need to try it out.

 339.
But like any craft, there are accessories and special tools that might not be essential, but they do make the work a little easier. And sometimes they can even make it a little more fun, too.

 340.
Take needle minders, for example.

 341.
I didn’t know these existed until a few years ago. I always just stabbed my needle through a couple of holes in the cross stitch fabric (ideally outside of the stitching area because that can stretch out the holes) when I wasn’t using it so I wouldn’t lose it.

 342.
But clever stitchers figured out a way to hold their needle close without damaging their fabric, and that’s a needle minder.

 343.
It’s basically a couple of magnets that you place your fabric between; then the top magnet can hold the needle while you’re not using it. You can also attach it to your paper pattern if you like instead.

 344.
Of course just using plain magnets for this is possible, but it’s not very exciting, so there are all sorts of designs of needle minders that you can buy (which we’ll get to in a minute). I’ve got an idea for making my own which I will share as soon as I try it out.

 345.
In the meantime, check out this post from Catkin and Kindle that goes into a lot more detail about how needle minders are made and different ways you can use them, as well as potential pitfalls of using them.

 346.
As for where to buy your own, I’ll probably do a whole post on that soon, too, but here are a couple of fun options from Etsy:

 347.

 348.
Caffeinated Cat Crafts has a wide variety of needle minders ranging from gnomes to a steampunk octopus, bees and ouija planchettes.

 349.
Adventure Needlework has a decided witchy/cat vibe, including needle minders of both a cat and a mushroom holding a knife.

 350.
Needles Notions and More focuses on seasonal designs including a bunny holding a carrot, candy corn and a snowman, but I really had to share this one because they have a Highland Cow needle minder!

It makes me want to start crafting projects with more of a summery feel to them, which is probably why I was recently drawn to look up some cactus cross stitch patterns.

 387.
Witch Stitch has an adorable little cactus in a pot pattern that wouldn’t be too hard for a beginner. It uses seven colors and has a little backstitch for the spikes.

 388.
This set of little cacti from Ugly Duckling House are cute all together on a hoop, but they’d also be cute stitched individually on different projects. Napkins for summer picnics, anyone? The full project is about 7.1 by 6.4 inches (18.8 by 16.3 cm) and 14 count fabric, and it uses 25 colors. There’s a little back stitching to make the spikes on a couple of the cacti, but you can leave them off if you don’t want to do it. Note: this pattern is no longer free but can be accessed on their membership site.

 389.
Another little sampler of mini cactus patterns is available from Nikki Pattern on Etsy. This design has four little cactus patterns in pots with geometrical designs on them. The set measures 71 by 108 stitches, which is 5.07 by 7.71 inches or 12.88 by 19.59 cm on 14 count fabric, and uses 14 colors.

 390.
Looking for something a little more realistic? Check out this set of four cactus in pots from Goffin Design (which I just profiled the other day). This one uses 20 colors and measures 207 by 108 stitches, which comes out to 4.79 by 7.71 inches or 37.56 by 19.59 cm on 14 count fabric.

 391.
Or if you really want a challenge, try this cactus collection from Patrones a Puntadas. This stunning realistic cactus cross stitch pattern uses a whopping 82 colors in 217 by 276 stitches. This would be a true labor of love for a dedicated stitcher who loves cacti, but how pretty it would be on your wall!

 432.
Even though their patterns cover a wide range of seasons, holidays and motifs, there’s just something about the designs from Etsy seller Goffin Design that evokes spring to me.

 433.
The colors are bright, fresh and cheerful, whether they’re used to illustrate four seasons of windows, Santa at his workshop or a pair of potted citrus trees.

 434.
A great many of the designs on offer have to do with the seasons, and quite a few of them are sets of four patterns that are related, such as the above-mentioned windows, or there are seasonal mice, hearts with the season’s word in the middle each stitched in a different color, and all sorts of seasonal birds, birdhouses, landscapes, cats…I could go on and on. The point is, if you like patterns that evoke the seasons, or a set of patterns that can keep you stitching on a theme all year long, you’re going to want to check those out.

 435.
The photo above is the vintage yard cross stitch pattern, featuring a teal doorway and a pink bicycle. Of course you could change the colors if you want but I really like this combination. And, again, with all the flowers and bright colors I think you can see where I’m getting the idea that their patterns feel like spring.

 436.
This particular pattern is 109 by 101 stitches and measures 7.79 by 7.21 inches, or 19.78 by 18.32 cm, when stitches on 14 count fabric. It uses 24 colors and has whole stitches and back stitching.

 437.
They also have a lot of flowers and cacti featured in patterns. There are several patterns for cross stitched orchids, for example, and botanically correct fruit shown on the plant and in cross section, including pear, peach, apple, orange, strawberry, pomegranate, cherry and apricot. These would be so lovely in a kitchen or dining room!

 438.
I can only scratch the surface in these reviews, but if I’ve piqued your interest, go check them out on Etsy at Goffin Design.
