18.

This article originally appeared on Bisnow.com.

 19.
The computing power of microprocessors continues to grow, and along with it, the heat these chips generate. This has data center operators concerned about whether their cooling systems can keep pace with ever-rising demands for energy-intensive applications like artificial intelligence.

 20.
The central processing unit in most home computers consumes between 65 and 150 watts of power. The wattage of processors used in data centers is much higher, however, with some experts speculating that a typical chip in this application could exceed 500W by 2025.

 21.
Multiply that wattage several thousand fold to account for all the microprocessors at work in a data center, and the enormity of this temperature-control challenge becomes clearer.

 22.
“The biggest issue for data centers is the advancement of heat density in chips because the companies making servers and chip technology are advancing faster than everybody else can keep up with,” said David Kandel, strategic markets application consultant for Belimo, a global manufacturer of energy-efficient control devices for HVAC systems.

 23.
Kandel will moderate a panel on optimizing data center cooling strategies at Bisnow’s Data Center Investment Conference and Expo: Canada on June 18, 2024.

 24.
Bisnow reached out to him to learn more about the challenges this industry faces, as well as how Belimo, which supplies valves, actuators, sensors, and other devices to data centers, is helping the industry transition to liquid cooling.

 25.
“We hope to lift some of the anxiety about these changes by letting people know that there are resources to help smooth the transition to new cooling technologies,” he said.

 26.
WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF OLDER COOLING METHODS?

 27.
Air cooling has long been the go-to solution to keep data center temperatures in check. That worked fine when the average heat density for a standard data center rack remained under 10 to 12 kilowatts, Kandel said.

 28.
But for servers engaged in today’s high-performance computing — or HPC — 25 to 50 kilowatts per rack is the norm and some speculate that usage could reach about 100 kilowatts, he said. That means a building’s AC system — no matter how powerful — working in tandem with an array of server fans is not enough to counter the heat of the next generation of data centers.

 29.
“The reality is that there are physical limits on how much heat can be transferred using air, which is about the least efficient way to transfer heat,” Kandel said.

 30.
WHAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE TO AIR COOLING?

 31.
Liquid cooling is widely regarded as the natural replacement for air cooling. Its drawbacks include the cost of installation and — for older facilities — the complexity of making the transition. The great benefit, however, is that liquid cooling doesn’t bump up against the same physical limitations as air cooling.

 32.
“In the next five to 10 years, we will see a lot of hybrid air- and liquid-cooled facilities, and air-based cooling will still be used for servers hosting things like email and social media,” Kandel said. “But liquid cooling is becoming the norm for the more dense applications such as AI and cryptocurrency mining. Some sellers of HPC servers are even requiring liquid cooling solutions for certain high-end products.”

 33.
Liquid cooling can take several forms, but Kandel said the two most popular are direct-to-chip or “cold plate” and immersion cooling. The former mounts a small heat-exchanging device directly to the server. The latter does away with racks and immerses the server in a dielectric fluid to absorb the heat.

 34.
Kandel said the magnitude of transitioning to these cooling methods, which will require the installation of new infrastructure inside of data centers, has many operators sweating.

 35.
“That's the thing that's scaring people right now,” he said. “When we go to DICE and other events, that's the biggest feedback we get from people.”

 36.
Fortunately, he added, fluid control technologies are advancing in ways that will make the new cooling systems run more efficiently and easier to operate.

 37.
HOW CAN DATA CENTERS BEGIN TO MAKE THE TRANSITION?

 38.
Kandel said Belimo has developed advanced control valves that incorporate flow, pressure and temperature measurement for the general HVAC market that also have efficiency-improving applications for liquid-based data centers.

 39.
Examples include its electronic pressure independent valves, or ePIV valves, which are reprogrammable to adjust to changes in the flow requirement as chip technology advances, thus avoiding the effort of manually adjusting hundreds of valves within a data center. Another technology, the Belimo Energy Valve, can ensure that fluid flow to each server cold plate is unchanged even if one or more servers in a rack are removed.

 40.
But while smart devices like these can help a data center operate more efficiently with liquid cooling, Kandel said planning for their use requires operators to think longer-term, which he admitted can be difficult in a field where technology — and its associated energy demands — evolve so quickly.

 41.
“This is still a very reactive industry, but we need to think about what the future of data centers will look like - and ask ourselves, ‘What is the densest chip we can imagine?’ — and then design our facility toward that,” he said. “As we adopt that mindset, centers will become more adaptable to these changes.”

 42.
WHY DICE?

 43.
Kandel said he looks forward to sharing information about liquid cooling-friendly technologies and learning more about operators’ concerns at Bisnow’s Data Center Investment Conference and Expo: Canada.

 44.
“This will be a great opportunity to listen to the other speakers, especially the consulting engineers and data center owners and operators, because they can give us so much insight into the challenges of this fast-changing industry,” he said.

 45.
Click HERE to register for the event in Canada on June 18th.

 46.

 63.

Belimo stands at the forefront of HVAC innovation, offering solutions that embody efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Our high performance butterfly valves provide key advantages to meet the diverse needs of the industry. This article explores eight distinct advantages of our butterfly valves, which are meticulously engineered to elevate operational efficiency and contribute to a more sustainable future.

 64.
1: Flexible Utilization Options

 65.
Our butterfly valves are designed with a focus on flexibility. The PR and PKR actuator series feature adjustable running times, capable of operating anywhere between 30 to 120 seconds to match specific application requirements. This flexibility is enhanced by the valves' ability to be installed in any orientation, without a designated direction of flow, making them suitable for open/close, changeover, or control applications. The valves are customizable for various piping configurations and are available in two-way and three-way options. They can be used for both mixing and diverting applications, eliminating the need for extra valves or specific part numbers.

 66.

 67.
2: Absolute Tightness

 68.
One of the standout features of Belimo butterfly valves is their ability to achieve absolute tightness, resulting in zero leakage no matter the size of the valve. This characteristic promotes energy conservation and operational cost savings, distinguishing our butterfly valves from traditional alternatives such as globe valves. By preventing leakage, we not only enhance system efficiency but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

 69.

 70.
3: Energy Saving Design

 71.
At Belimo, energy efficiency is a cornerstone of our design philosophy. Our butterfly valves are engineered to reduce energy consumption significantly, thanks to the synergy between the butterfly valves and their actuators, which have been co-engineered to optimize torque efficiency. As the valve ages and its torque requirements naturally increase, the actuator intelligently adjusts to the changing needs, ensuring that the valve operates efficiently and closes with precision.

 72.

 73.
4: Reduced Weight and Low Installation Height

 74.
Belimo's advanced butterfly valves are designed with a focus on reducing both weight and installation height, significantly easing the installation process and saving valuable time and resources. This is exemplified in our two-way advanced butterfly valve, which, at a size of six inches, weighs only 44 pounds and stands at 28 inches tall. In stark contrast, a conventional six-inch globe valve typically weighs in at 354 pounds with a height of 47 inches. In environments with limited space, such as mechanical rooms or commercial buildings, the compact design of our butterfly valves becomes an essential feature. This point applies equally to our three-way butterfly valves, ensuring that regardless of the application, our valves facilitate simpler, more cost-effective installation processes without compromising performance or durability.

 75.

 76.
5: Transparent Communication

 77.
Our advanced PR and PKR actuator series support a variety of communication protocols and offer simple configuration using the Belimo Assistant App on an NFC-enabled smartphone. Our valves can seamlessly integrate into existing building management systems, supporting a variety of protocols such as MP bus, Modbus RTU, and BACnet MS/TP.

 78.

 79.
6: Seamless Integration of Sensors

 80.
Belimo butterfly valves feature seamless sensor integration, simplifying system complexity by reducing cabling efforts and allowing for direct sensor-to-actuator connections. This not only saves considerable time during installation but also minimizes installation costs. With the inclusion of two sensor inputs on the PR and PKR series, the need for extensive wiring to the controller is eliminated, facilitating a more efficient setup.

 81.

 82.
7: High Operating Safety

 83.
Safety is paramount in our product design, with our actuators built to NEMA 4X standards, rated to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including UV radiation, rain and snow. Our valve bodies are made of ductile iron, designed to stand up well to higher temperatures and pressures. Our discs are made of stainless steel, which helps prevent corrosion. The integrated temperature and humidity sensors within the actuators further ensure the longevity and reliability, highlighting our commitment to quality and safety.

 128.

The heart of an effective HVAC system lies in the precise management of temperature throughout extensive ductwork. This is where duct averaging sensors come into play. Designed for the meticulous task of maintaining an even and comfortable ambient temperature, these sensors are integral to modern heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.

 129.
Duct averaging sensors are specially designed to measure temperature over the length of an air duct. Unlike point sensors that measure temperature at a single location, duct averaging sensors provide a more comprehensive overview by measuring the temperature along the entire length of the sensor probe. This is particularly useful in large and complex duct systems where air temperatures can vary significantly due to stratification, airflow patterns, or other factors.

 130.
Belimo’s new line of duct averaging temperature sensors, such as the 22MT-528 (active) and 01MT-5B8 (passive), is engineered to deliver exceptional performance. These sensors are housed in rugged IP65 / NEMA 4X rated enclosures, ensuring they are well protected from environmental factors and capable of operating in diverse conditions.

 131.
Applications and Use Cases

 182.

Temperature sensors are indispensable tools in many commercial applications, including HVAC, refrigeration, manufacturing, and much more. They play a critical role in monitoring and controlling temperature, ensuring safety, efficiency, and optimal performance in a wide variety of different systems.

 183.
Among the different types of temperature sensing elements available, Belimo sensors typically use a thermistor or a Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD). Belimo offers both passive sensor assemblies, which output resistance (Ohms), and active sensor assemblies, which output voltage (Volts). In this article we’re going to review the different types of Belimo sensors, and some of the applications they’re used for.

 184.

 185.
Thermistors

 186.
Thermistors are temperature sensitive resistors that are made of ceramic or polymer materials. They show incremental changes in resistance relative to changes in temperature. In HVAC, Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) thermistors are used, meaning their resistance decreases with increasing temperature. Thermistors are highly-sensitive, inexpensive, and versatile, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications such as boilers or steam service where small temperature changes need to be detected accurately. The main limitation of the thermistor is that it can only measure accurately within a limited temperature range up to around 266℉. Belimo sensors can be configured with NTC10k (10k2), NTC10k Precon (10k3) or NTC (20k) signal type thermistors.

 187.
Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

 188.
The other type of sensing element that Belimo sensors use are Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs). Typically made of platinum or nickel, RTDs are known for their accuracy and stability over a wide temperature range of up to around 1200℉. Opposite NTC thermistors, with RTDs, as the temperature increases, the resistance increases. This response is called a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC.) Belimo offers platinum pt100 (100 Ohm) and pt1000 (1000 Ohm) RTDs, and Ni1000 (1000 Ohm) nickel RTDs. Between the two, Platinum RTDs offer the most stability over the largest temperature range.

 189.
When specifying a sensing element type, the primary distinction between thermistors and RTDs lies in their applicable temperature ranges. For temperatures exceeding 130°C, RTDs are the only viable option. At temperatures below this threshold, thermistors are typically favored for their precision and lower cost. Conversely, RTDs are the preferred choice in scenarios where accurate resistance at high temperatures is critical.

 190.
Belimo Sensors

 191.
Belimo sensors feature exceptional reliability, straightforward installation, and seamless integration with Building Automation Systems (BAS). Our sensor housings provide IP65/NEMA 4X protection, and offer quick installation and easy commissioning. 212.

 213.
Indoor air quality is a critical aspect of creating safe and healthy environments, particularly in spaces where vehicles operate or are stored, such as garages, tunnels, and maintenance facilities. Two of the most harmful gases in such settings are carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), both of which can pose serious health risks at elevated levels. To ensure the safety and well-being of occupants, it is imperative to monitor these gases accurately and dependably. Achieving certification standards such as UL 2075 and ULC-S588 is an essential step for manufacturers in demonstrating the reliability and effectiveness of their products.

 214.

 215.
The UL 2075 standard is set by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a universally recognized global safety certification organization. Pertaining specifically to gas and vapor monitors, detectors, and sensors, UL 2075 provides an extensive framework for regulating the design, functionality, safety, and performance testing of the entire gas monitoring device. The International Building Code (IBC) requires that buildings use UL 2075 Listed CO monitors, detectors, and sensors in all US states. In 2018, the International Mechanical Code (IMC) mandated that all carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide monitors, detectors, and sensors in enclosed parking structures be UL 2075 Listed.

 216.
Products that achieve the designation of “UL Listed” have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation by an independent Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) to ensure they meet the specified performance criteria and safety standards. While some products on the market may be labeled as “UL Recognized” or “UL Approved,” only the designation of “UL Listed” indicates the product was independently reviewed and deemed to be in full compliance with the standard.

 217.
ULC-S588 is the Canadian counterpart to UL 2075, established by Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). It sets forth similar standards and requirements for gas and vapor monitors, detectors, and sensors, ensuring that products meet the necessary safety and performance criteria in Canadian jurisdictions.

 218.
The Belimo 22G series gas monitors have set a new benchmark for indoor air quality monitoring. The Belimo 22G02 CO, 22G14 NO2, and 22G0214 combo CO + NO2 gas monitors are now fully certified to UL 2075 and ULC-S588 standards, ensuring compliance with the highest safety and performance standards. Belimo is currently the only company that offers UL2075 & ULC-S588 certified NO2 and CO monitors globally. While some manufacturers may cite the UL 2075 rating for the sensing element only (or even reference the UL 2034 residential code), Belimo gas monitors are UL 2075 & ULC S588 certified in their entirety. Building owners, facility managers, and safety officers can leverage these certifications to ensure compliance with safety regulations across many jurisdictions, and most importantly, protect the health and safety of occupants.

 219.
Belimo gas monitors offer an intelligent peer-to-peer communication protocol that gives users the flexibility to configure and install a complete ventilation control system with only one monitor, or dozens operating in multiple ventilation zones. Belimo gas monitors are factory calibrated and can monitor up to two gases simultaneously. All monitors feature audible and visual alarms, and CAN bus communication, allowing for standalone operation and networking of up to 32 devices. Select models feature relays and analog outputs to control ventilation directly, as well as BACnet MS/TP allowing for integration into a BMS. The monitors can be easily assigned to groups for ventilation zoning on the same

 220.
network, significantly reducing control wiring and installation time. All Belimo gas monitors are wired via daisy chain and are backed by a five-year warranty.

 221.
In summary, the certifications of UL 2075 and ULC-S588 are crucial in ensuring the safety and reliability of CO and NO2 monitors. By choosing Belimo’s UL Listed gas monitors, stakeholders are ensuring compliance with the highest safety standards, protecting both property and lives.

 241.

 242.
Founded in 1917, Providence College sits on an illustrious 105-acre campus in the heart of Providence, Rhode Island. Since its inception, the campus has evolved and expanded to meet the needs of its enrolled base, which has grown to more than 4,000 students. One example of this is the college’s Campus Transformation initiative, which began in 2013 with the purchase of Huxley Avenue from the city of Providence. The goal of the project is to create a more unified, sustainable, functional campus, no longer bisected by a busy street, offering enhanced freedom of movement for both pedestrians and drivers.

 243.

 244.
Running beneath one of the recently renovated sections of the school, 12-inch chilled water lines provide cooling to several buildings on the lower campus. With additional buildings set to come online in the next two years, these lines and the central chiller plant are inching closer to full capacity.

 245.
One solution discussed by Providence College and its main mechanical and controls contractor, Arden Engineering Constructors, involved adding more capacity with the installation of a new chiller. However, this would require increasing the size of the chilled water line to handle the higher flows. An alternative option was to reduce chilled water demand in the existing buildings so there would be sufficient capacity to accommodate new developments on the lower campus. Recognizing this as the more pragmatic of the two solutions, Arden and Providence College turned to the Belimo Energy Valve™.

 246.

 247.
Project Overview and Motivation

 248.
Reducing demand for chilled water on the lower campus would effectively create spare capacity in the chiller plant and reduce water flow through the main line. In doing so, Providence College could forgo the installation of a fourth chiller (the plant already had three 1000-ton chillers running in parallel). Moreover, the main line would not have to be excavated and replaced, which would have been a significant undertaking.

 249.
With around 20 Energy Valves already installed on campus, Arden and Providence College had an established relationship with Belimo, and were familiar with the company’s range of products.

 250.
“Our plan was to essentially pick off the sections of the lower campus where the demand for chilled water was highest,” said Paul Carter, General Manager at Earthwise Energy Technologies, the controls contractor on the job. “Some of the technology in these buildings was very outdated and due for an upgrade. Having seen the advanced capabilities of the Energy Valve first-hand, we were confident it would be able to generate the flow savings we were looking for.”

 251.

 252.
The Energy Valve is an IoT-enabled, pressure independent valve that measures and manages coil energy by using an embedded ultrasonic flow meter, along with supply and return water temperature sensors. With built-in Power Control and Belimo Delta T Manager logic, the Energy Valve monitors coil performance and optimizes available energy by maintaining Delta T.

 253.
A key advantage of the Energy Valve is that the Delta T setpoint can be matched to the design Delta T of the coil. As the temperature sensors start to realize a lower differential temperature across the coil, the valve begins to close and the flow decreases, allowing for more efficient heat exchange and elimination of overflow. When Delta T begins to stabilize, the valve increases flow back through the coil, thus maintaining optimal heat transfer.

 254.
The Energy Valve comes equipped with a suite of cloud-based services that can be used to benchmark coil performance, analyze glycol concentration, store energy data, send alerts and commission for optimal performance. In addition to the standard analog signal and feedback wiring, the Energy Valve communicates its data to the Building Management System (BMS) via BACnet MS/TP or BACnet/IP as well as Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP. The built-in web server collects up to 13 months of data that can be downloaded to external tools for further optimization.

 255.
After careful evaluation, the decision was made to install 22 additional Energy Valves across the lower campus – with sizes ranging from ¾” to 2 ½”.

 256.
Savings and Benefits from Energy Valve

 257.
The retrofit project was completed in Spring 2023, and now Arden and Providence College plan to begin collecting data to quantify the actual flow reductions. The reduction in pumping will lead to decreased electricity usage, which is in line with the college’s commitment to increase energy efficiency and improve environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.

 258.
Allowing their cooling needs to be met with the existing chiller plant configuration, the school saved the cost of buying and installing a new chiller, amounting to an estimated $500,000 - $1,000,000 in savings. This figure excludes the millions of additional funds and months of work that would have been needed to resize and replace the existing main chilled water line.

 259.
“While the construction of new buildings in the coming years may ultimately necessitate the installation of a new chiller, the Energy Valve will allow us to push that project further into the future and significantly increase the efficiency of the existing system,” said Matt Basile, Lead Design Engineer for Arden. “Every Energy Valve we install gets a data connection to the cloud and to the campus central building management system (BMS). This provides us with visibility down to the individual air handlers, which is crucial for troubleshooting and identifying further opportunities for efficiency gains as we move forward with future capital improvement projects. It is now standard practice to flat spec the Energy Valve for any chilled water device over 10 gallons.”

 260.

Customer Satisfaction

 261.
The Energy Valve retrofit is one of several instances over the last three years where Belimo, Arden, and Providence College have worked collaboratively to conserve water usage and drive energy efficiency.

 262.
“Belimo has a long-standing relationship with both Arden and Providence College and is proud to once again be part of a project that will help the college achieve its goal of creating a more efficient and sustainable campus,” said PJ Qvarnstrom, RetroFIT+ Business Manager at Belimo. “We are eager to see the results of this Energy Valve retrofit and look forward to supplying cutting-edge technologies for future projects.”

 263.
In addition to the lower campus chilled water line, there are two other main lines that come from the central chiller plant and provide cooling to separate sections of the Providence College campus. With additional buildings planned for these sections, the lower campus retrofit will serve as a demonstration project and may potentially pave the way for additional Energy Valve installations in the coming years.

 264.
“Belimo’s track record of providing superior products and service has fortified our professional relationship and made them a preferred supplier to the college,” added Steve Basile, Supervisor of Engineering at Providence College. “We look forward to leveraging innovative products like the Energy Valve in the future as we drive to continuously improve the efficiency of our facilities across campus.”

 280.

 281.
In an era where global efforts are fervently pushing towards energy efficiency and sustainability, the call to modernize building systems has never been louder. Existing buildings, each with their own design and operational challenges, have substantial opportunities to save energy, improve air quality, reduce carbon emissions, and enhance occupant comfort through targeted retrofitting.

 282.

 283.
But retrofitting doesn't just mean improved energy efficiency and IAQ – it can also translate into monetary savings on energy costs for buildings. And, thanks to the growing number of incentives tied to reducing energy consumption, retrofit projects in commercial real estate and public facilities are more feasible than ever. This makes retrofitting both environmentally and economically strategic.

 284.
At Belimo, our decades of experience in the HVAC industry have equipped us with the knowledge and expertise to help you optimize your current system for better performance. We developed RetroFIT+ to help customers learn how to apply our energy optimizing technology to their existing HVAC systems. RetroFIT+ offers a complete approach to upgrading your building, whether you're looking for an incremental improvement, a full overhaul, or something in between.

 285.
Building managers often worry about a retrofit being a nuisance to tenants, but this is a popular misconception. Most retrofits can be done without inconveniencing building occupants. Once your HVAC system has been retrofitted, control over the building’s IAQ and overall comfort will improve substantially and noticeably.

 286.
A key principle of RetroFIT+ is the emphasis on pressure independent system designs that do not require manual rebalancing. Many legacy HVAC systems were built to be pressure dependent, relying on periodic recommissioning to manually rebalance the hydronic system to keep it running efficiently. While recommissioning a pressure dependent system can improve efficiency in the short term, these systems are not capable of maintaining a balanced load.

 287.
Conversely, pressure independent hydronic systems maintain a balanced load regardless of pressure fluctuations. Pressure independence is achieved by using specifically designed pressure independent valves, which can be either mechanical or electronic.

 288.
Mechanical pressure-independent valves combine a differential pressure regulator with a 2-way control valve, ensuring a specific flow at each ball opening level, regardless of system pressure changes. On the other hand, electronic PI valves incorporate a flow sensor and a sophisticated control algorithm along with a control valve. This combined mechanism adjusts the valve according to the measured flow, maintaining a constant flow setpoint even if the system pressure changes.

 289.
While both mechanical and electronic pressure independent valves do a great job at maintaining consistent flow, electronic PI valves offer real-time hydronic transparency, allowing you to verify that the system is working as designed.

 290.
For example, the Belimo Energy Valve™ is an IoT-enabled, electronic pressure independent valve that measures and manages coil energy using an embedded ultrasonic flow meter, along with supply and return water temperature sensors. The Energy Valve comes equipped with a suite of cloud-based services that can be used to benchmark coil performance, analyze glycol concentration, store energy data, send alerts and commission for optimal performance. In addition to the standard analog signal and feedback wiring, the Energy Valve communicates with the Building Management System (BMS) via BACnet MS/TP or BACnet/IP as well as Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP. The device has a built-in web server that stores up to 13 months of data. This data can be downloaded to external tools for further optimization.

 291.

 292.
In addition to monitoring the efficiency of your hydronic system, it’s crucial to consistently monitor the air quality in your building and with a high degree of accuracy. Research has shown that elevated levels of CO2 in buildings and schools can cause headaches, fatigue, and decreased cognitive function for occupants. Moreover, ASHRAE has recently approved Standard 241 to lower disease transmission in indoor spaces. This augments ANSI/ASHRAE Standards 62.1 and 62.2, which are the current recognized standards for ventilation system design and acceptable indoor air quality.

 293.
Sensors are used to monitor indoor CO2 concentration, an important metric for assessing ventilation and occupancy in relation to indoor air quality (IAQ). Elevated CO2 levels can indicate that more fresh air exchange is needed to maintain a healthy indoor environment.

 294.
Belimo room sensors provide real-time air quality monitoring with an intuitive CO2 LED traffic light system, making it easy to verify that the room environment is healthy and comfortable. Featuring built-in auto-calibration and altitude compensation for both active and passive models, Belimo room sensors deliver reliable, accurate CO2 readings without the need for manual tuning.

 295.

 296.
See Belimo’s Seven Essentials of Healthy Indoor Air for more information on how to improve the IAQ in your building.

 318.
Picking the right components can make a significant difference in how well an HVAC system runs. Among these components, Globe Valves and Ball Valves often play a key role. Globe Valves are especially useful when precise flow control is required, whereas Ball Valves are ideally suited for applications requiring quick opening and tight close-off. In this blog, we'll break down the differences between these two valves, how they work, and where they’re commonly found in HVAC systems.

 320.
Ball Valves

 321.
A Ball Valve controls the flow of fluid using a rotary ball with a hole running through the center. When the valve is open, the hole is aligned with the pipeline, which allows the flow to pass. When it's closed, the hole is perpendicular to the flow, stopping the passage of fluid. A Ball Valve uses the rotation of the ball (increasing and decreasing its opening) to control the flow.

 322.
Most of the time, Ball Valves are used for chilled or hot water with up to 60% glycol concentration. They can be used for water-side control of air handling units in ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and water/steam control in heating systems.

 323.
Belimo offers a full line of industrial 2-way & 3-way Ball Valves that are available with non-spring return, spring return or electronic fail-safe actuators offering high close-off capabilities. The actuators operate using a standard voltage, allowing for on/off, modulating, or floating-point control, which moves the valve to the position specified by the control system.

 324.
Ball Valves such as the Belimo QCV and PIQCV are specially designed zone valves that are known for their reliability, cost-effectiveness, and easy installation. The Belimo CCV integrates the robust close-off functions of a Ball Valve with a specialized disc, ensuring an equal percentage flow characteristic for consistently accurate flow control. Less expensive Ball Valves are a common choice for shut-off valves due their ability to provide a quick and tight seal with a low pressure drop.

 325.
Globe Valves

 326.
A Globe Valve is comprised of a linear travel plug which fits into a seat enclosed within a spherical body, which is where it gets its name. The flow is adjusted by moving the plug up or down, in proximity to the seat. When fully closed, the plug seals off the flow. Globe Valves are used in HVAC systems to regulate, throttle, or isolate flow. They are especially useful when precise flow control is needed, such as in hot water heating systems, steam systems, or in chillers where modulating flow is important for system performance.

 327.
Belimo offers Globe Valves in a range of sizes from ½” to 6”, which meet both ANSI 125 and ANSI 250 standards. They are available with bronze or stainless-steel trim options and can be equipped with spring return, non-spring return, or electronic fail-safe actuators. Belimo Globe Valves are ideally suited for HVAC devices, including air handling units, terminal equipment, and hydronic systems operating in primary and secondary loops for water or steam service.

 328.
The choice between a Globe Valve and a Ball Valve depends on the specific needs of the application, but in general, for precise flow control, a Globe Valve is preferable, while for on/off operations or where a minimal pressure drop is desired, a Ball Valve is more suitable. Also, Globe Valves can be more expensive than Ball Valves, which too is a consideration.

 329.
Are you looking for HVAC training? Belimo offers unlimited access to a library of high-quality, current, and engaging HVAC video tutorials from industry experts.
