37.

The University of Wisconsin men’s basketball program was one of six (BYU UVA, Marquette, Purdue, UNC, Stanford) Power 5 programs that hadn’t added a player from the transfer portal. That changed with the commitment from University of Central Arkansas guard Camren Hunter Sunday.

 38.
UW was quick to act on the third-year guard, pulling him onto campus for an official visit merely days after reaching out and earning his commitment to beat out Saint Louis, Butler — which he briefly intended to play for as a transfer last offseason — Florida State and West Virginia.

 39.
Hunter is the first of what’s likely to be many incoming transfers for a Badgers team with plenty of holes to fill.

 40.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, Hunter boasts a large frame that Wisconsin didn’t have in the backcourt last season. He spent his first two seasons at Central Arkansas, earning Atlantic Sun Conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2021-22 and making the All-ASUN Third Team in 2022-23 on 16.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

 41.
But, Hunter hasn’t taken the floor since his All-Conference campaign — sitting out after breaking his foot prior to the start of the season. He has two years of eligibility left.

 42.
Hunter is a logical addition in the wake of Chucky Hepburn’s departure — joining AJ Storr, Connor Essegian and Gus Yalden as scholarship players who have left the program this offseason — as a player who can defend at a high level, play make and score.

 69.
Hunter took a massive step forward as a shooter in 2022-23, jumping up to 31.1 percent (5.4 attempts per game) from 25.0 percent on deep balls, and was especially impressive in catch-and-shoot scenarios.

 70.
Ideally, the lefty could fill both guard positions, with the ability to orchestrate and facilitate within head coach Greg Gard’s offense and slide to an off-ball role when Kamari McGee or Daniel Freitag are on the floor. Hunter’s versatility expands past position — possessing a true three-level scoring capability, including a decent post-up game, where he can take advantage of smaller defenders.

 71.
Though he’s naturally a one — where he’ll likely see plenty of action in 2024-25 — Hunter’s ability to play multiple positions is massive considering the Badgers’ backcourt depth.

 72.
Hunter is a bit unorthodox with the ball in his hand, utilizing quick changes of pace and a herky jerky rhythm to get by defenders and to the rim. He’s a strong finisher through contact and looks to push the pace in transition, something UW did more of last season.

 73.
He’ll likely need to improve finishing with his off-hand, and though it’s unclear how he’ll take to Big Ten basketball, Hunter’s all-around game fits what Gard wants to do on both ends of the floor and should be enough to have a legitimate chance at the Badgers starting point guard role in the fall.

 95.

The University of Wisconsin women’s tennis program capped off the regular season with a 4–1 win against Rutgers University and left fans at the edge of their seats during a 4–3 loss against the University of Maryland during the weekend of April 20. UW played away at both of these matches — having left the Nielsen Tennis Center in high spirits after sweeping Michigan State University 4–0 April 13.

 96.
These final regular season results secured a double bye for the Badgers in the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 4 seed, hosted by the University of Michigan. After besting the University of Illinois April 26, they fell to the University of Michigan, the team that eventually went on to the clinch the tournament title.

 97.
The Badgers continued their Big Ten success this season — finishing with the same 8-3 record as they did last season — having defeated all three prospective Big Ten Tournament opponents during the regular season.

 98.
As even more gameplay to look forward to, the NCAA Tournament team bracket will be selected April 29, with the singles and doubles brackets being selected April 30.

 99.
In the most recent rankings by the NCAA committee, published April 23, the Badgers were ranked as the 33rd best Division 1 program in the country with an impressive 16-4 record.

 100.
UW is also making waves in the individual rankings, as sophomore Maria Sholokhova was ranked at No. 83 in the singles rankings, with a 26-10 record.

 101.
Looking back at this past season, the Badgers held one of the most impressive home records in the country, going 10-1 this season, with a strong win over the No. 38 ranked Fighting Illini. The Badgers also found success when traveling to face their opponents, finishing 6-3 away and 2-2 in neutral sites.

 102.
As a team, UW garnered a quality amount of success this season, some of which can be attributed to breakout freshman Ellison Reynoldson. The Camden, Tennessee, native finished this season 5-1 in singles play as well as 5-5 in doubles play.

 130.
Sholokhova finished the season strong, ending with a three-match doubles win streak and has gone 15-1 (one unfinished) in her last 17 singles matches, with 12 of them coming in straight sets. She also racked up wins against ranked opponents in Selma Cadar and Justine Leong from the Terrapins and Northwestern University, respectively.

 131.
Graduate student Rosie Garcia Gross brought the experience to the squad, having transferred from Georgia Tech this past season after finishing 20-14 in singles and 12-10 in doubles. This season as a Badger, the New York-native dominated both singles and doubles play —finishing 9-2 in singles and 14-1 in doubles. Garcia Gross ended with a 12-1 combined record in conference play, her only loss coming in doubles against the Fighting Illini.

 132.
Garcia Gross wasn’t the only graduate student to fight for great results this season. This season, Cai finished 12-4 in singles play and 9-5 in doubles play — combining for a 9-6 conference record.

 134.
Mukhortova — like many other Badgers on the team — posted dominant numbers this season in both doubles and singles, finishing with a combined record of 18-10 and a conference record of 8-4.

 135.
Mukhortova won both her matches against ranked opponents this season, first against No. 26 Cate Broerman and Hope Moulin from James Madison University in the first match of the regular season and against No. 61 Minorka Miranda and Maria Budin from the Terrapins in the final match of the regular season.

 136.
Head coach Kelcy McKenna entered the 2023-24 season as her eighth in charge of the Badgers and she has worked continuously to turn the program around from 4-16 in 2016 to 17-5 this season. Under her leadership, UW won their first NCAA Tournament match since 2002 and at one point were ranked No. 11 in the team rankings during the 2022-23 season.

 137.
Excluding the 2019-20 season, which was canceled to the COVID-19 pandemic, McKenna and her staff have guided the Badgers to four consecutive seasons ranked inside the top-50 and this season will be the third consecutive year finishing inside the top-3 in the Big Ten standings — including a joint win in 2021-22.

 138.
The Badgers have a bright outlook for their future. With a squad full of promising talent and experienced leadership, UW is sure to build off of past success and continue to bring home results for Badger fans around campus and the country.

This follows a broad pattern of increasing employment gains in the U.S. following a surge in pandemic-related joblessness, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

 216.
Despite these gains, over half of recent college graduates are still underemployed, according to a February 2024 report from Strada Education Foundation.

 217.
Graduates in degrees that utilize a substantial amount of quantitative reasoning experience the lowest unemployment rates out of college, less than 37%, compared to a 57% or higher unemployment rate for recent graduates with degrees in public safety and security, recreation and wellness studies or general business fields, according to the report.

 218.
Despite the relatively lower unemployment levels for recent graduates in quantitative fields, it has become more difficult for recent graduates to find jobs in the tech industry over the past two years, former president of the Wisconsin Association of Colleges and Employers Liz Julian said.

 219.
“There have been some layoffs that have unfortunately been very tech heavy, and so that put more people into the market,” Julian said. “I think there’s still plenty of roles. It’s just a little more competitive than it was two to three years ago because of saturation and an increased number of applicants.”

 220.
Conversely, nursing and healthcare-adjacent fields and education have high employment demands in the state, and students applying into those fields can expect a much less difficult job search, Julian said.

 221.
Regardless of what sector a student plans to enter into after graduation, attaining field-specific work experience while still in college has powerful effects on their matriculation into their workforce, according to a 2016 National Association of Colleges and Employers report. Students who indicated they would be graduating in the 2014-2015 school year who worked paid internships or co-ops for private, for-profit companies had a job offer rate of 72.2%. For students working unpaid internships or co-ops for private, for-profit companies the rate fell to 43.9% and dipped to just 36.5% for students who had no internship or co-op experience.

 244.
Without prior work experience, landing a career job is more difficult, forcing some recent graduates to take jobs that don’t utilize the skills acquired in their degree, and the longer they go without finding degree-specific employment, the less appealing they are to employers in that field, Julian said.

 245.
According to University of Wisconsin educational policy studies PhD student Kyoungjin Jang-Tucci, connections also play an important role in landing field-specific work experience.

 246.
“There is much evidence about how a student’s network positively influences their job, post-graduate outcomes — especially how soon they get a job and so on,” Jang-Tucci said. “So networking is very important.”

 247.
Jang-Tucci said since networking frequently starts with family, the better situated a family is economically and socially, the more likely they are to be able to leverage connections and procure internship and job opportunities, leaving students from low income households at a disadvantage.

 248.
But, the job placement resources available to all students on campus should not be overlooked, Julian said. Julian recommends going to job fairs, using campus career services and reaching out to guest speakers in class to build a network.

 249.
Currently, the median lifetime return from a bachelor’s degree at UW is $760,000 for Wisconsin residents relative to a high school diploma, according to a white paper report from the Center for Research on the Wisconsin Economy, and though an unresponsive job market can tempt questions about the value of a UW degree, in the long run, it is almost always worthwhile, Julian said.

 250.
“I do think it is still worth it,” Julian said. “And if you don’t have an end goal then maybe it isn’t, but those who do graduate absolutely earn more than those who don’t. So I think that’s a big part of it. People feel like ‘if I do this, then X will happen.’ And sometimes it’s not as linear as that.”

 251.
In a recent media roundtable with campus news organizations, UW Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin reaffirmed UW’s commitment to supporting students in their transition out of the classroom and into the workforce.

 252.
Mnookin emphasized investments in SuccessWorks — the College of Letters and Sciences’ center for career and professional development — and the presence of job-focused opportunities within all of UW’s schools.

 253.
The university hopes to improve career enhancing opportunities for students, but the proportion of gainfully employed students and recent graduates remains high, Mnookin said.

 254.
“I do think that the proportion of our students who are gainfully employed in areas connected to what they’re hoping to do — is it absolutely every student, no — we are a big, large place and there’s always going to be exceptions, but we are quite strong,” Mnookin said. “And it’s important that we continue to look at that and continue to invest in that.”

 278.
Participants in this consortium believe it is higher education’s responsibility to provide students with critical civic skills, Vinnakota said.

 279.
The Institute works to uphold education as a public good in order to ensure young people are ready to enter the public sphere and become effective leaders, Vinnakota said.

 280.
“In an increasingly polarized society, many students are encountering diversity for the first time on a tangible, personal, daily basis,” Vinnakota said. “It’s a critical time when they need to develop the skills, habits, practices, and norms to live in a multicultural and interconnected democracy.”

 281.
The Discussion Project, which was founded in 2017 to advance this goal at UW, seeks to engage students in productive dialogue that exposes them to different perspectives.

 308.
The Discussion Project Program Director Lynn Glueck said it’s mission is to help instructors facilitate high-quality classroom discussion to improve student engagement.

 309.
As part of the Mnookin’s work with College Presidents for Civic Preparedness, The Discussion Project has begun Deliberation Dinners, where students will have the opportunity to engage in constructive discourse along with peers coming from diverse backgrounds.

 310.
“It’s not a debate, it’s really a discussion where you’re inquiring into ideas and asking, ‘Here’s this issue, but what should we do?’” Glueck said. “The point isn’t to come to a consensus on what to do, it’s to just dig in and think about all of the options, weigh them, and learn together.”

 311.
UW Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Lori Reesor said April 23 that in regards to protests and demonstrations, the fall 2024 semester will be “absolutely very busy.”

 312.
Vinnatoka said the shared set of civic commitments created by the Insitute provide guidance to university leaders on valuing free expression — including ideas that some people may consider offensive or wrong. Vinnatoka said these principles also work to ensure free expression is not an open license for speech that is intentionally abusive, harassing, discriminatory or harmful to others.

 313.
“It does so by prioritizing free inquiry, subjecting views to the scrutiny of others, creating an argument, and a base of evidence with the power to persuade,” Vinnatoka said. “That’s what free inquiry does – elevate a speech right into a civic discipline.”

 360.

Longer days, warmer weather — hopefully — and the chairs returning to Memorial Union’s terrace can only mean one thing — spring has sprung in Madison and patio season is upon us. Let us forget about the snow we had a few weeks ago and plan out some time to dine in the sunshine with this comprehensive list of Madison “streateries!” From brunch plans to happy hours and late night specials we’ve got all of your plans covered.

 361.
The term “streatery” first launched in Madison during the Summer of 2020, allowing restaurants, taverns and other eligible businesses to expand their seating outdoors, according to the City of Madison. First implemented to allow for social distancing and to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, streateries quickly became loved by Madisonians and are here to stay during the warm months.

 362.
First, restaurants on the square. With a phenomenal view of the State Capitol building, you cannot go amiss with any of these options.

 363.
Marigold Kitchen

 364.
If you are lucky enough to beat the crowd and grab a table at Marigold Kitchen for a bright, filling brunch, I am envious of you. With their outdoor seating off of South Pinckney Street, you are guaranteed to leave full and happy.

 365.
Ancora Cafe + Bakery

Featuring weekly special items, Ancora’s comforting breakfast food is best enjoyed with a view of the State Capitol in their inviting, outdoor patio space.

 437.

The Madison Police Department held a press conference Thursday to discuss safety and staffing plans ahead of the Mifflin Street Block Party on April 28.

 438.
During the press conference, MPD Central District Captain Michael Hanson said the department will follow the same footprint as last year’s event, with over 150 police officers present and drones to monitor safety.

 439.
“For months, we begin planning for this event and copious amounts of resources are available to make sure it is a safe and, for the people attending, fun event,” Hanson said.

 440.
Police will also monitor other, nearby college housing areas including Fahrenbrook Court and College Court, Hanson said.

 441.
Students are encouraged to seek help from police if confronted with a dangerous situation. If underage students have been drinking and need help, the police will address health and safety concerns immediately, and underage drinking will be addressed later, according to Hanson.

 442.
“The last thing we want is somebody to be scared to talk to the police or worried to talk to the police if there is something that we need to be alerted to,” Hanson said.

 443.
Despite assurance, students worry approaching the police due to the chance they could get in trouble for underage drinking.

 444.
University of Wisconsin student Anna Syltie said she may resist reaching out to the police knowing there could be repercussions.

 472.
Though UW has a Medical Amnesty Through Responsible Actions program, amnesty only applies to citations handled by UWPD. 473.
During the press conference, Director of City of Madison Building Inspection Matt Tucker discussed the risk of overcrowding on balconies at the Mifflin Street Block Party. While building inspectors have gone to most houses on Mifflin Street to identify unsafe balconies and porches, the houses they did not inspect are being asked to rope off balconies.

 474.
The Madison Fire Department has also been notified of incomplete safety inspections to ensure those houses’ balconies are not occupied, according to Madison Fire Marshal Bill Sullivan.

 475.
“We’ll make sure that they follow through and those decks and balconies are not occupied,” Sullivan said. “We will be out there with MPD to make sure that housing and decks are not overcrowded.”

 476.
Residents on Mifflin Street were informed of porch and balcony policies during move-in, UW sophomore and Mifflin Street resident Bella Gonzales said. Gonzales confirmed a building inspector checked their property to ensure there was no damage.

 477.
Police have been informing residents they will be responsible for crowds and damage to the property, Gonzales said. With this knowledge, Gonzales and her roommates plan to have someone stay at the house and monitor crowds when they leave. They have also established other plans in case someone does enter their house.

 478.
“We’re putting all our valuables into our extra room and locking the extra room, so just in case there is any random person we don’t know in our house,” Gonzales said.

 499.

The City of Madison approved an update to their zoning guidelines which will allow property owners to construct accessory dwelling units alongside a building with up to eight units, according an April 17 press release.

 500.
The previous guidelines only allowed owners to construct accessory dwelling units on single-family homes, City of Madison Zoning Administrator Katie Bannon said. The idea was raised with the intent to expand the number of accessory dwelling units throughout the city, Bannon said.

 501.
“Since 2012 about 32 [accessory dwelling units] have been built or are currently under construction within the city,” Bannon said. “The idea was expanding this to … see more property owners take advantage of the opportunity to add one more dwelling unit.”

 502.
Accessory dwelling units allow homeowners to make money off of their unused property and the units can contribute to a smaller carbon footprint since they require fewer resources to build and maintain, according to AARP.

 529.
The units have a maximum size of 900 square feet and up to five unrelated people can live in one unit — making them a viable option for college students, Bannon said.

 530.
The new zoning guidelines will also eliminate the requirement that the building owner must occupy the property, Bannon said. Previously, residents could not leave the property while also renting out an accessory dwelling unit, she said.

 531.
“An example could be in some of the near campus neighborhoods where you have a professor living alongside an accessory dwelling unit,” Bannon said. “That professor couldn’t leave for sabbatical at any time and still rent out the accessory dwelling.”

 532.
More property owners may build accessory dwelling units in the future if the owners take advantage of constructing detached units, Bannon said. These units do not have to meet commercial building codes — like adding fire sprinklers — which can significantly increase the cost of construction of a unit, she said.

 533.
The City of Madison hopes property owners will take advantage of the increased opportunity to build any type of accessory dwelling unit, Bannon said.

 534.
“They [accessory dwelling units] can be attached to the existing building or detached, but, either way, it’s another way to add a little bit of density with an existing neighborhood,” Bannon said.

 559.
The scholarship has four opportunities with four different focus areas — Academic Achievement, Bridge to Success, BPC Changemaker and Organizational Excellence, according to the Instagram post.

 560.
“The scholarship was created to reward and encourage Black excellence here on our campus,” BPC Managing Officer Jonah Dixon said. “We saw a need to give back to our campus specifically and we felt like a scholarship would be just a great way to keep people motivated, keep people going and acknowledge the hard work that Black students are already doing on our campus.”

 561.
The hope with the scholarships is to help as many students as possible, according to BPC Chief Officer Jekiah Manor. The BPC is focused on helping Black students succeed at the university, so scholarship awards are intended to support students in a variety of ways.

 588.
Black students face disproportionate financial barriers, which can make expenses for things like food and personal maintenance challenging, according to Manor. The goal of the BPC by creating the scholarships is to give Black students the full-time student experience their non-Black counterparts have.

 589.
“A big saying in our Black community is that it takes a village to actually succeed and grow in this life — and specifically in the environment that we have here at UW–Madison,” Dixon said. “I mean, it’s not too many people that look like us, and through the BPC, I personally think that this is where we can unite Black people and support them throughout the whole journey.”

 590.
The scholarships are being funded using money that has been donated to the BPC, according to Manor. The application deadline is May 1 at 11:59 p.m.

 591.
“We’re hoping eventually we’ll be able to expand and offer more financial assistance to Black students and Black student organizations,” Manor said. “Our idea behind it is seeking to fill the gaps in financial need that other scholarships and other grant applications don’t cover.”
