The Southern Vintage Race Car Nationals took place March 17-19 at Dillon Motor Speedway and welcomed some truly beautiful-looking throwback machines. Among the Vintage racing groups represented were the Southern Ground Pounders, Carolina Vintage, Bell and Bell, Palmetto Vintage Racers, East Coast Flathead Fords, South Carolina Dirt Cars, and the Daytona Antique Automobile Racing Association. Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate on the scheduled Saturday, but a large contingent of racers came back together on Sunday for a day full of racing. The big winners of the weekend were: Jeff Melton in his ’66 Mustang (Southern Ground Pounders and National Sportsman) Jay Royal in a ’41 Packard (SGP Modifieds) Bob Reavis was in a ’38 Ford (Flathead Fords) Kenneth Deese in his ’68 Nova (Palmetto Vintage Racers) Susan Kimmel ’66 Falcon (Carolina Vintage)

 27.

Jimmie Johnson, center, celebrates in Victory Lane after he won the NASCAR Monster Energy race, Sunday, June 4, 2017, at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del. (Nick Wass / Associated Press) Associated Press Hooked on NASCAR as a kid, there was something about Cale Yarborough that made a fan out of Jimmie Johnson. Johnson was glued to the set as he sat on a dirty old couch at home in El Cajon, California. He loved Yarborough’s fearlessness and the way the Hall of Fame driver kind of reminded Johnson of his grandfather. Johnson even stopped at a Hardee’s on a road trip because he believed the fast-food joint and Yarborough’s sponsor was the race shop. There was one more part of Yarborough that Johnson admired: “His winning, ” Johnson said. Oh, Yarborough won – 83 times. The same number in the record book as that California kid who grew up to become even better than his idol. Johnson sped off on the final restart Sunday and earned another slice of NASCAR history, winning in overtime at Dover (Delaware) International Speedway for the 11th time and moving into a tie for sixth on the career victories list. He then tipped his cap – more like, his tribute helmet – toward Yarborough. “Cale, you’re the man, ” Johnson said. Johnson again made an impact at his favorite track – and he worked hard to take this checkered flag. He was forced to start from the rear of the field because of a gear change, then zipped past Kyle Larson in overtime on the restart. “You put that route in front of me and I’ll chase it down, ” Johnson said. Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR champion, has racked up a Hall of Fame resume all with team owner Rick Hendrick and crew chief Chad Knaus. He plopped his helmet on top of the Chevy in victory lane and swapped it out for a throwback No. 28 Hardee’s Chevrolet Yarborough hat. “I remember going to a race in Oklahoma with my parents, my brother, we’re driving across the country and we pull into a Hardee’s, ” Johnson said. “I had no idea it was a burger stand. I really thought when I walked in the door that I was going to Cale Yarborough’s race shop. I was very disappointed. I had a burger and left and understood the world of sponsorship.” Johnson and the 78-year-old Yarborough are the only drivers in NASCAR history to win three consecutive championships. Johnson, who won for the third time this season, is on a drive for a record eighth. With more wins like this one, Johnson just may pass Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty and get No. 8. He drove the entire 10-race Chase last season with a tribute helmet to Earnhardt and Petty. “Drivers have always used helmets as their voice, ” Johnson said. His says loud and clear he has a deep respect for NASCAR’s greats. Larson was second, followed by Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Newman and Chase Elliott. Truex won the first two stages on the 10-year anniversary of his first career Cup victory, also at Dover. Larson had his second win of the season in his grasp until he spun the tires on the restart. “Jimmie’s the best of our time, ” Larson said. “Probably the best of all time.” There was a multicar wreck on the final lap that brought the race under caution, but Johnson had hit the line needed to make the race official and he coasted to the finish. The Hendrick Motorsports driver swept Dover in 2002 and 2009 and also won races in 2005, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. Johnson also joined NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty (Martinsville-15, North Wilkesboro-15, Richmond-13, Rockingham-11) and Darrell Waltrip (Bristol-12, Martinsville-11) as drivers to win 11 races at a single track. Waltrip and Bobby Allison are next on the wins list with 84. At this rate, Johnson could pass them by the end of the season. “You have to say he’s one of the greatest to race in this sport, ” Hendrick said. IndyCar Graham Rahal completed a doubleheader sweep in the Detroit Grand Prix to become IndyCar’s first two-time winner this season.

 36.

As we get ready to go back racing again, fever is starting to build around the imminent release of Ron Howard’s movie Rush. With a few weeks to go until the world gets to see what I and some of my colleagues have already been fortunate enough to have viewed, I thought I’d run down a list (a personal list) of what I reckon are the top 10 racing movies of all time. Well… at least, the ones that I’ve seen anyway. Oh, and before we get started, I haven’t included Senna or TT3D Closer to the Edge, as I thought the list should stick to movies rather than documentaries… so here we go: 10. Cars 2006 – John Lasseter – Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt I’ve always been a huge fan of animation, and when Cars was released it combined two of my biggest loves. John Lasseter visited quite a few Grands Prix back in 2006 to promote the movie… not that he needed to. It was a huge smash. I don’t think we really need to explain the story of its success, the fact that Cars toys are still selling in huge numbers speaks volumes. Although based around NASCAR, Lasseter was smart enough to include voiceovers for important parts from famous racers in each territory so as to give it even more appeal. And when Cars 2 came out, the list of drivers wanting to take part in the film was huge. The best part of Cars 2 for me, however, was a cameo from my dear friend David Hobbscap. 9. Cannonball Run / Cannonball Run 2 1981 / 1984 – Hal Needham – Burt Reynolds + everyone cool I’ve probably only included these as I was a huge fan as a kid. Actually it was probably because of Cannonball Run 2, which I watched religiously as a young lad… mostly because of Jill and Marcie, the Lambo girls. Wow. Anyway. Great fun, still a giggle 30 years later, and, of course, the spark that lit the fire of Gumball and all the other supercar road races that have sprung up in recent years. Classic fun and silliness. 8. Bobby Deerfield 1977 – Sydney Pollack – Al Pacino, Marthe Keller Almost universally derided as an artsey arsefest, Bobby Deerfield is actually something of a hidden gem for the racing fan owing to its tie in with Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham F1 team in 1976. Al Pacino plays the hero, Bobby Deerfield, who for our purposes races for Brabham in Carlos Pace’s lid. The race footage is incredible, as is the behind the scenes look into the Brabham team. It’s a clear sign of Ecclestone’s business acumen that he should have allowed such brilliant access to Pollack’s crew. It’s a huge advert for Brabham and their sponsors. The story itself is a bit of an odd one. Reckless racer meets woman with mysterious and never fully explained illness. They fall in love, in the knowledge that ultimately both are facing death square in the face. It probably tries to be a little bit too profound, and as such misses the mark. It’s an uneasy watch, but at the same time bizarrely compelling. The racing footage is exquisite, though, and well worth a look. 7. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby 2006 – Adam McKay – Will Ferrell, John C Reilly, Sacha Baron Cohen. A wonderful sideways look at NASCAR, Talladega Nights became a cult classic in the racing community almost over night. It takes all the things that those within racing mock themselves for, and exploits them for all the world to see. The story follows the life of Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR boltie who one day takes over the wheel from his team’s arrogant, lazy driver and instantly becomes a success. He has to face his wife leaving him for his best friend and his greatest challenge – the arrival of a French Formula 1 driver, played brilliantly by Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Ali G). Irreverent, hilarious… it’s a comedic masterpiece of absolute silliness. Shake and Bake baby, Shake and Bake.

Dixon and Franchitti were robbed at around 9:40 p.m. local time at the restaurant, which is located less than a mile from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hours earlier, Dixon set the fastest qualifying time in 21 years there. Two males, ages 15 and 14, were arrested, according to the police report. Both were charged with robbery, while the 15-year-old was also charged with resisting law enforcement. The teenagers allegedly took credit cards as well as the wallet and identification of Dixon's wife, Emma Davies-Dixon, who police say was not in the vehicle. In the report, detectives said surveillance cameras showed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot before the robbery. About 30 minutes later, the report said, officers stopped the car and the passenger fled. He was apprehended by a police dog. One of the suspects was taken to Marion County Holding at Eskenazi Hospital while the other went to the local juvenile detention center. Police say one of the suspects was identified by one of the robbery victims. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will review the case and make a changing decision. Dixon and Franchitti declined to comment to reporters Monday, while Chip Ganassi Racing released a statement saying the drivers are "completely fine." "Thank you to everyone for all of your concerns about their well-being, " the statement read. "However, we will allow the Speedway/Indianapolis police departments to handle the situation and while they conduct their investigation we will refrain from making any further comments to allow Scott to focus on the upcoming Indianapolis 500." Hours after winning the Indianapolis 500 pole, Scott Dixon was robbed while buying food at a Taco Bell drive-thru. AP Photo/Darron Cummings "Obviously, I'm glad they're OK, " Kanaan said. "Now obviously I can make fun of them big time." Team owner Chip Ganassi also took a lighthearted approach to the incident in a tweet Monday. There goes that Taco Bell sponsorship we were working on I guess. @scottdixon9 @dariofranchitti @EmmaDaviesDixon — Chip Ganassi (@GanassiChip) "We're all very relieved to hear that everyone is safe and that the suspects were caught, '' Taco Bell Corp. spokesman Rob Poetsch said in an email to The Associated Press. Dixon will start on the pole for the third time at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. The four-time series champion won the Indy 500 from the pole in 2008. Franchitti is a three-time Indianapolis 500 winner who retired following a massive crash at the 2013 IndyCar race in Houston. He suffered a broken back and right ankle and a concussion in the crash.

Castroneves made two strong passes at Sato in the final laps but couldn't catch him. "It was a fantastic race, " Sato said to ABC. "Hopefully the crowd enjoyed it." It was Sato's first Indy 500 win. He wrecked on the final lap in 2012 while battling for the lead with Dario Franchitti. Sato, 40, is the first Japanese driver to win at Indy. It was the third win in the last four Indy 500s for Team Andretti and owner Michael Andretti. Castroneves finished second for the third time. He has also won the race three times. Rookie Ed Jones finished third with Max Chilton fourth and Tony Kanaan fifth. Fernando Alonso, the Formula One champion making his first start at Indy, raced near the front most of the day before his Honda engine blew with 21 laps to go. He got a huge ovation from the crowd. It was the third Honda engine to give out during the race, a concern of many heading into the day. Here's the race breakdown: The first 25: The first 25 laps were clean as pole-sitter Scott Dixon immediately went to the lead. But by lap six his teammate, Tony Kanaan, had already moved from seventh to first. The former Indy winner has historically been an aggressive passer at Indy and proved it over the first few laps. F1 champion Fernando Alonso had a tough start, falling from fifth to ninth on the first lap. But he was was back up to fifth by lap 26. The top five at that point were Kanaan, defending winner Alexander Rossi, Ed Carpenter, Dixon and Alonso. Carpenter was the only Chevy in the bunch. Lap 50: As the race settled in, all under a green flag, the Michael Andretti race team began to flex. Defending Indy winner Alexander Rossi and teammate Alonso - showing his chops moving up the field - were the top two flyers with the F-1 icon taking his first Indy 500 lead on Lap 37. After the first quarter of the race there was no sign of the Honda power failing as four of the top five, led by Alonzo and Rossi, were at the front. The only Chevy in the mix was Carpenter in fourth, ahead of Kanaan. Ohioan Graham Rahal has maintained his place in the top 15 while three-time Indy winner Helio Castroneves was slowly moving up to ninth. Lap 53: A clean race turned dastardly in turn 2 on lap 53 as Jay Howard lost control of his car, barely missed Kanaan, but hit pole-sitter Dixon. Like Sebastian Bourdais earlier this month Dixon was flipped into the air (over the top of Castroneves), hit the inside wall coming down causing a burst of flame before rolling over again on the track and splitting apart upon landing. Both drivers walked away for medical attention. "I'm fine, '' Howard said after being released from the medical center. "I'm really glad Scott's OK. He was a victim of this." Dixon walked out of the medical center and told ABC he was a little shaken from the bumpy ride, but was fine. Dixon's hit ripped the infield fencing causing a 19-minute red flag delay. As the drivers sat in line in the pits, the clouds became more and more ominous. Dixon emerged from the medical center "bummed" but not the worse for wear. "Definitely a wild ride, '' Dixon said. "There was no way to try to avoid him." The race returned to green flag racing on lap 60 with Alonso still in the lead with teammate Rossi behind him. Lap 80: It's an Andretti race as the top three drivers - Hunter-Reay, Rossi and Alonso - were nose-to-tail. All this after the race suffered its second yellow and just as it came under the third. No. 2 was for a Conor Daly crash and it lasted nine laps, followed by another on lap 81 for debris. Interesting to note, as drivers hit the pits under caution, the Penske team was making a move as Will Power jumped into the lead and Castroneves drifted up to third. It was a quick yellow as the track went green again in lap 84 with the previous Andretti front-runners now fourth (Hunter-Ray), fifth (Rossi) and sixth (Alonso). Lap 100: The race became official with Castroneves holding the lead as the Andretti race team, along with Honda, continued its race dominance to that point. The lone Chevy challenger in the top five was Castroneves, who diced his way up to the lead even with all his troubles to that point on the track. But Hunter-Reay, Rossi and Alonso were right behind. Lap 150: Max Chilton, a second-year driver for Gip Ganassi holds the lead with 50 to go. Rahal had rotated into the point, briefly, to become the 13th leader in the race on lap 113, one off the track record with still more than 80 laps to go. The first Honda engine blew on lap 136 and it was Hunter-Reay's as he was in the lead. With 50 laps and one green flag pit stop to go three Andretti drivers - Alonso, Rossi and Takuma Sato - plus Castroneves and Kanaan all had the look of a potential winner. A day at the track: Bourdais returns: Sebastian Bourdais, injured in a crash during qualifying, visited the track Sunday morning before the race and said he expected to return to race before the end of the season. Bourdais underwent surgery to repair injuries to his hip and pelvis.

Friday night’s program will once again include the fan favorite, four 20 lap events for the TQ Midgets. Twenty cars will start each race, and the fastest driver from time trials will start in the seventh place in each race. At stake in these races will be eight spots in Saturday night’s prestigious 40 lap Gambler’s Classic TQ Midget feature. Drivers will have two ways to race their way into Saturday night’s main event. The four drivers that win Friday night’s events will automatically lock themselves into Saturday night’s race. In addition, the next four highest point earners from Friday will also lock themselves in Saturday’s main event. With points being awarded based on finishing position in the races and their time trial position earlier in the day, every position will matter. The Slingshots and Sr. Champ Karts will also run qualifying events. Saturday’s program will consist of heat races and last chance qualifiers for the TQ Midgets followed by feature events for the Slingshots and Champ Karts. The program ends with the traditional 40 lap TQ Midget feature event, where Anthony Sesely of Matawan, NJ became the first three time winner of the prestigious event.

Will Sunday’s STP 500 from Martinsville Speedway in Virginia give us our first two-time winner this season? If there is a favorite, it might be Kyle Larson, who won last week in Fontana and has three second-place finishes this season, putting him atop the points lead entering Sunday. That lead earned him the pole position at Martinsville because Friday’s qualifying was washed away by rain. Brad Keselowski is one of the five winners this season, taking the checkered flag in Atlanta. He has come close since, with three straight top-five finishes, including finishing second to Larson last week. He starts in fourth position on Sunday. Martin Truex Jr. won at Las Vegas this season and finished fourth last week in Fontana, his only other top-five finish in 2017. He starts in third position on Sunday in Martinsville. Ryan Newman won at Phoenix two weeks ago but hasn’t finished higher than 15th in any other race this season. He won the STP 500 back in 2012. Newman starts 11th on Sunday. Kurt Busch, the Daytona 500 winner this year, starts in 14th place on Sunday and won this event in 2014. His brother Kyle, the defending STP 500 champion, starts in 10th position on Sunday. Fox Sports 1 will televise the race from Martinsville, with Mike Joy calling play-by-play along with analysts Jeff Gordon and Darrell Waltrip. Online streaming is available through Fox Sports Go.

 81.

The New Zealander finished with a qualifying speed of 232.164 mph, the best since Arie Luyendyk's track record of 236.986 in 1996. Dixon's first lap of 232.595 also was the fastest since Luyendyk's record lap of 237.498 in 1996. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver will be joined on the front row by Ed Carpenter, a two-time pole winner who finished second at 231.664. Defending race champion Alexander Rossi of Andretti Autosport will start on the outside of Row 1 after going 231.487. Fernando Alonso will start fifth in his first oval race next Sunday. The two-time Formula One champion averaged 231.200. It's the first time in this season's six races that a Penske driver didn't win the pole. And it took some guts to end the streak. “We knew the conditions were much better today and we took a little bit of a gamble in trimming out, ” a giddy-looking Dixon said even before qualifying ended. “When I saw it, I was a little surprised myself.” And when the fans saw the times posted on each lap, the roar increased. But Dixon still had to weather two more runs to become the fifth 500 driver to claim three poles. Japan's Takuma Sato drove daringly close to the walls and wound up finishing at 231.365. He'll start fourth, the inside of Row 2. That left Carpenter as the last chance to knock Dixon off the pole — and he already seemed to know that probably wasn't going to happen. “I was surprised when I saw some of the numbers yesterday and when he did that 232, a little pressure went away to be honest with you, ” Carpenter said. “We wanted to be on the front row and we wanted to get everything we had — and I think we did that.” Dixon has 26 career IndyCar poles, breaking a tie for 11th place with Paul Tracy. Carpenter, his teammate JR Hildebrand and Power were the only three Chevrolet drivers to make the top nine. Dixon's teammate, Tony Kanaan, will start seventh after going 230.828. Marco Andretti, the son of team owner Michael Andretti, will start eighth — the middle of Row 3. While 32 drivers qualified Sunday, the last car on the 33-car grid will start without an official time. That car will be driven by James Davison, who will replace the injured Sebastien Bourdais in the No. 18 car. Bourdais is expected to miss the rest of the season, a team spokeswoman said, after he had successful surgery on his fractured pelvis. The French driver also fractured his right hip in a frightening crash Saturday.

If the answer is no, then you don't even want to think about going down the route. The odds of ever breaking even, let alone making money, are very very low. First off how well are you capitalized? The money needed is extreme. Since I'm more on the sports car side of things I'm going to approach this question as if you wanted to start at a lower end of professional things. Reason for this is you can do a spec series such as Porsche Cup (we'll use this for our example). The nice thing about a spec series is that you don't have to develop the car, as everyone runs the exact same type of car. This will save you VAST sums of money as you become familiar with the inns and outs of motorsport. You do have multiple routes to get there. I'm going to share the quickest way first and will sum of the less expensive way later. So you have decided you want to participate in IMSA Challenge (US Porsche Cup). The good news is, that the cars are spec, and all you have to do to get started is to purchase one. You can even purchase a used one as the rules have been stable for this class. Though next year they will be switching to a new car. For now we'll assume you're entering next year when the new car is more important (though they have classes for the older cars). That's the good news. So we're buying a new car which is ~250 k. The bad news is that it will be very difficult to find paying customers willing to pay to driver for a team they never heard of, hasn't won professional races, and doesn't have big time staff. In fact, unless you have a friend who wants to run this part will be initially impossible. However, if you're well capitalized there's a solution. You can hire a professional driver (IMSA Challenge actually has driver limits so you'd have to find a pro who hasn't become a factory driver in GT. Front running Continental Tire drivers would be the best you could get). You might get lucky and find a decent driver for free, but in your first year, pay a driver 40-50k. Think of him as a consultant, not a driver.

 99.

This weekend IndyCar’s Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will feature two races each for the open-wheel ladder series and it should be watched carefully. Despite being a street course, the St. Pete track has traditionally provided good pointers to form for road courses, too. U.S. editor David Malsher, Global news editor Val Khorounzhiy and editorial assistant David Gruz are your guides to the hottest prospects in Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 in 2017. INDY LIGHTS Khorounzhiy says… If experience was as big a factor in Lights as it is in many other junior open-wheel categories, the 2017 the Indy Lights entrylist would be setting the scene for a duel between Santiago Urrutia, who came up a couple of points short of champion Ed Jones last year, and Kyle Kaiser, who was best of the rest. Both of them should certainly feature up front. Kaiser is heading into a third straight season with Juncos' IL15, while Urrutia shouldn't have too tough a time adapting to a move from the outgoing Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team to Belardi. Still, if recent Lights history is anything to go by, the title contest won't be limited to the obvious favorites. The big question mark is how this year's crop of rookies will fare in Lights. Much attention will be on Pro Mazda champion Aaron Telitz in a second Belardi car, given that three of his five most recent predecessors went on to win Lights as rookies. But his former Pro Mazda teammate Patricio O'Ward (if he gets a full season) and Nico Jamin are capable, too – as are Europe converts Colton Herta and Matheus Leist. Besides Kaiser and Urrutia, the big name among the returnees is probably Shelby Blackstock, who now has to aim to become a frontrunner in a third Belardi entry after two tough campaigns at Andretti. Gruz says… Opportunities to graduate to IndyCar might be scarce, but the field of Indy Lights has changed significantly over the off-season. While none of the new names are as high-profile as 2016’s class that included European F3 champion Felix Rosenqvist or Formula Renault 3.5 star Dean Stoneman, Urrutia’s two years on the Mazda Road To Indy show you don’t need to be well-known to do well. Speaking of the Uruguayan, missing out on the 2016 title and budget limitations put his future in the series at risk, but with a seat at Belardi Auto Racing now secured, he will start the season as title favorite, even though Kyle Kaiser, who scored just 27 fewer points in 2016, will return as well. The likes of Neil Alberico or Shelby Blackstock could feature more regularly at the front than before, but the more interesting question is who of the many promising rookies will be the best. Two drivers arrived from Europe, Colton Herta and Matheus Leist, both having successful campaigns in F3-level championships. Consequently, the Indy Lights car will be a step up for them, an extra burden to the usual difficulties for a rookie coming from Europe. In addition, last year’s top Pro Mazda drivers Aaron Telitz, Nico Jamin and Pato O’Ward will all race in Indy Lights, although the latter is currently signed only for the season opener. Malsher says… Without wishing to sound wise only after an event, the Indy Lights roadcourse test at Homestead Miami ended pretty much as I’d expect – Herta, Jamin, Kaiser, Urrutia were the top four, and I don’t see a champion outside of this quartet.
