3. Nastiest thing that happened today:  draining an abscess on a patient's kidney.  Think toothpaste the color of chocolate milk / infant puke, and that's what (barely, with the help of multiple saline flushes) came out of the draining catheter.<br />

5. Most ironic sight of the day:  a person standing outside the hospital, wearing a shirt with the slogan "Let's all get together and fight/beat cancer" or something like that,....<br />

Quick summary of life events since I last posted:  took an exam, took a trip over Spring Break (which was AMAZING), came back and took another exam, got my bridesmaid dress for a friend's wedding, took another test, took another test the next week, had OSCE (I *really* hope I didn't fail.  I do so well with patient encounters unless I know I'm being video recorded, and then I just do stupid things like forget to wash hands before taking the patient's vitals, or forget to introduce myself, or forget to ask the patient's age, etc.), had another exam, and finally, had one more exam.<br />

19. Then we had "shelf exam week."  The Pathology one went OK (I think), the Micro/Immunology one actually wasn't that bad except it made me realize I need to know viruses a LOT better than I currently do, and Pharm....  haha, well lets just not talk about the Pharm shelf!!<br />

21. So now I'm in full-on Board-study-mode and haven't really been doing anything blog-worthy. <br />

25. This has me (slightly) depressed for two reasons:<br />
26. 1.  I really hate studying pictures of diseased genitalia for hours upon end.  (There's a REASON I know I will never be an OB/GYN!!)<br />
27. 2.  Facebook keeps informing me that a significant majority of the (non-medical) friends that I grew up with, cousins, classmates from undergrad, etc. are currently with child.  Then I have to study all the complications of "advanced maternal age" and it's frustrating to realize that's where I'm heading, because medical school is consuming all of my peak reproductive years.  Now, granted, I haven't yet found the male specimen with which I'd like to procreate.  Nor am I certain that I want to have children.  Neither of these facts really lessens the resentment I feel towards med school right now.<br />

29. But really, all this may just be an excuse that I use to channel the resentment I already felt towards med school for other less tangible reasons.<br />

32. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This frustrates me incredibly.  When I am online, I am not reading a book.  I do not need to "turn pages."  I wish to use the lovely invention, "scrollbar," as this is a highly efficient way of scanning text and images at a rapid pace without having to wait on each page segment to load individually.  I realize that this is probably a devious way of increasing the ads-to-article ratio, but seriously they could just have the ads rotate (if they can do it on the electronic billboards I know they can do it on a website!!)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

38. But some days, it wakes up and decides that my life has been going too smoothly.  Today was one of those days.<br />

40. 10:00am:  I finished doing dishes, laundry, cleaning bathroom, and the rest of my weekly efforts to resist the inevitable entropy and sat down to print my notes from Friday's lectures.  Three documents, about 24 pages.  That's all I needed.  This is what happened:<br />

42. 10:01am:  Document 1 prints in black-and-white.  Normally, this would be OK, but this was a pathology lecture and I really wanted color images.  Which is why I had selected "Print in Color" and "Save" before clicking "Print." <br />

44. 10:02am:  I open the printer and verify that both black and color cartridges are present and aligned correctly.<br />

46. 10:03am:  I try to print Document 2.  The first page comes out with color images.  Hooray!!  The second page is printed on the back of the first, correctly.  Hooray!!!  The third page... <br />

157. We, as students, don't know what our task will be until we're handed a clipboard a few moments before we walk into the room.<br />

159. We are videotaped and rated by both the patient and a physician preceptor.  We give an oral presentation and turn in a write-up based on the encounter.  They grade us off of a checklist (that we have never seen) that covers everything from professional behavior to technical skill.<br />

Well, I had mine this week and just got the preceptor's feedback today.  I got a rave review!!  :-D  The patient gave me all high ratings in every category, and the preceptor said I only missed one thing from the checklist AND that I had covered several things of importance that weren't on the checklist!!  His comment was that "you're naturally intuitive and have good clinical reasoning skills."  Sure, I have to work on my terminology and how I present orally, but it's <i>SO unbelievable </i>how motivating a positive comment can be.<br />

Having a fake patient tell you after the encounter is over that "You were nicer to me than my actual doctor is" somehow makes the light at the end of this very long, very dark tunnel of med school just a little bit brighter.  One day I <i>will</i> be someone's "actual doctor."  And while that thought is a tiny bit terrifying still, it's also exhilarating because it just drives home the realization that right now I <i>am </i>acquiring knowledge and learning skills that I will be able to use one day to help real people that are suffering and in need of care.<br />

344. <li>When my physician was reviewing my past medical history before she put me on ADHD meds, she discovered something that could potentially be a problem.  She sent me to a specialist to rule out this problem, but, alas, his precious little test was not going to allow me to be so lucky.  Well, technically I guess I shouldn't say that, because I am really, really grateful that my doc caught this before it got worse.</li>
