I’ve gotten a few so far, but it’s my first time having somebody jump with me this time. It was fun,” Chandler said.

It was the exclamation point on No. 9 Kentucky men’s basketball’s 77-51 season-opening win over Nicholls. However, the game didn’t always look like it would end that way.

The No. 9 team in the country didn’t start its season the way most expected.

Kentucky’s offense sputtered early, managing just 28 points in the opening half on 32.3% shooting (10-31) and an underwhelming 12.5% from three (2-16).

The Wildcats looked out of rhythm, and the shots simply were not falling into the net.

“We had some tightness on the floor on the offensive end,” Head Coach Mark Pope said.

They leaned on defense to stay ahead, forcing Nicholls into shooting 12% (3-25) from the field and just one made three-pointer in 14 tries.

“That was something we hit on this week, and I felt like our team defensively was great,” Chandler said. “Being in our gaps, we hit on that big this week. It’s just something that no matter how the game’s going, offensively or not, that’s always something we can lean on, our effort defensively, making it hard on teams to score, and that’s what kept us alive.”

By halftime, the Wildcats led 28–15, their fewest first-half points scored in a season opener since 2020 but also the fewest allowed at Rupp Arena since 2014.

The team that walked out for the second half was unrecognizable from the one in the first.

Kentucky flipped the script entirely, and at the center of it was the 6-5 guard out of Utah.

In the first half, Chandler finished just 1-4 from the field and the three, mustering five points to start the game.

The same shots that rimmed out in the first half started falling, and Chandler suddenly couldn’t miss. The sophomore shot perfectly across every single category.

Kentucky Wildcats forward Brandon Garrison (10) and guard Jasper Johnson react to Collin Chandler’s dunk during the men’s basketball game against Nicholls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Photo by Christian Kantosky | Photo Editor

When Chandler threw down that viral slam, Rupp Arena erupted.

The crowd roared, the bench tumbled onto the court in disbelief, and the players on the floor stood frozen, jaws dropped.

Sparked by four 3-pointers, he led the team with a career-high 15 points and tied his career best for assists with four.

Once the shots started falling, Chandler didn’t hesitate. He credited his mentality as something the team works on every day. He explained that in practice, if a player misses, they’re expected to keep firing until they make one.

“What we do is shoot the ball,” he said. “Even if you miss ten in a row, you keep shooting. That’s not just for fun — it’s a message for us that we’re going to keep shooting even if we start 0-for-3 or 0-for-10.”

However, it was just the offensive performance that impressed Pope. It was about the way he started.

“I thought Collin started the game elite defensively,” Pope said. “He made great defensive plays early, and even though none of us had much of a rhythm offensively, it was nice to see him find some comfort level on that end tonight, too.”

That same defensive effort sparked Kentucky’s second-half surge. Chandler’s energy and momentum were contagious, whether it was Mo Dioubate diving for steals or Denzel Aberdeen finding rhythm as a distributor.

“When I see someone else do something like that, a crazy play, a block or a dunk, it makes me want to do it,” Dioubate said. “Collin had that dunk, and I’m like, I’m going to try to get a steal and go do the same thing. It’s good energy, and that’s what we talk about a lot.”

The Wildcats, once stuck at 32% shooting, hit 61% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc in the second half.

For Chandler, the night wasn’t just about a viral dunk or the flashiness — it was about persistence. From a struggling first half to a flawless second, he turned frustration into fuel and helped his team do the same.

A slow start, a viral finish and the moment Chandler reminded everyone why this Kentucky team might just have what it takes to go the distance.

PHOTOS: No. 9 Kentucky defeats Nicholls 77-51

Christian Kantosky, Photo Editor

Basketball

Photo Galleries

Sports

kentucky basketball

rupp arena

sec basketball

No. 9 Kentucky men’s basketball defeated Nicholls 77-51 in its opening game of the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.

Gallery • 19 Photos

The moon shines before the men’s basketball game against Nicholls on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky. Strong performances from newcomers, dominance on the glass, stifling defense and Clara Strack showing why she was expected to be the best player on the team.

New additions showed out in UK debuts

After missing the entire 2024-25 season with a leg injury, Jordan Obi wasted no time showing what Kentucky was missing. Obi finished her Kentucky debut with a double-double. She scored 15 points and grabbed 15 boards, shooting 6-11 from the field.

She scored the Wildcats first six points of the game and led the team in scoring at half with 13 points on 5-7 shooting.

Obi was incredibly active on the offensive glass, seven of her rebounds came on the offensive end which led the team.

Tonie Morgan showcased her playmaking abilities in the half court and transition. She was the primary initiator for the Kentucky offense, she rarely looked for her own shots before trying to involve teammates first.

The Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Top-20 Watchlist member finished her UK debut with a team-leading 16 points and four assists, she also grabbed two boards.

Wildcats dominated the glass

Morehead State was no match for the Wildcats on the glass. Kentucky comfortably won the rebounding battle 54-33.

The Wildcats racked up 21 offensive boards and turned that into 22 second-chance points. Morehead State had just five offensive boards.

Strack and Obi both led the effort on the glass with 15 each, Amelia Hassett supplemented with eight rebounds.

Steals, blocks and forced turnovers

The Wildcats led the nation in blocks per game last season with seven. Strack, Hassett and Teonni Key were the Wildcats leading shot blockers last year. All three have returned and it seems that the Wildcats will be a great shot blocking team once again.

Kentucky ended the game with 12 blocks. Key led the effort with four blocks, Hassett and Asia Boone each had two.

The ‘Cats played the passing lanes very effectively. The team finished with nine steals.

Morehead State turned the ball over 16 times in the game, and Kentucky took full advantage with 13 points off turnovers.

It’s Clara Strack Season

Strack was expected to take a big step-up heading into this season, taking on the role as the Wildcats best player. She has the ability to affect the game in many ways, and that showed tonight.

Strack scored 15 points on 6-13 shooting, grabbing 15 rebounds with six coming on the offensive end. This was the 16th double-double of Strack’s career.

The reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year was, unsurprisingly, a force to be reckoned with on the defensive end. Strack ended the game with a team-high three steals and adding three blocks.

She led the Wildcats with 35 minutes.

Kentucky increased its lead in the all-time series with Morehead State to 34-4, with 17 straight wins.

The Wildcats are now 44-8 in season openers and 48-4 in home openers, this win extends the streak to 17 games for both.

The Wildcats will be back at Historic Memorial Coliseum on Thursday, Nov. 6, for their next game, taking on Monmouth. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. ET. The game will be shown live on SEC Network+.

At the whistle: Kentucky football defeats Auburn by a score of 10-3 for its first SEC win of 2025

Jonathon Bruner, Sports Editor

Football

Sports

Top Sports

kentucky

kentucky football

sec football

Kentucky football (3-5, 1-5 SEC) dominated on defense to defeat Auburn (4-5, 1-5 SEC) by a score of 10-3 for its first conference win in 2025. The dual threat is also second on the team with 270 rushing yards.

Speaking of the ground game, Jeremiah Cobb leads the team with 717 yards, and he’s found the endzone four times this season.

The receiving core is headlined by the duo of Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr.

Coleman leads the team with 440 yards and two touchdowns with Singleton Jr. trailing just behind with 367 yards and two scores.

Looking at the two teams compared to the rest of the SEC, Kentucky is 13th in the conference in yards per game at 361.3. The Wildcats move one spot down to 14th when it comes to points per game at 24.1.

The home Tigers are 15th in the conference with 340.6 yards per game but improves to 13th in points per game at 24.8.

Defense-

Kentucky enters the game reeling on defense after getting gashed against Tennessee as the Vols tallied over 500 yards of total offense and pounced on a major flaw of the defense and that’s explosive plays.

Giving up those explosive plays have been an issue the entire season and could cost them yet again if they cannot get it cleaned up.

The large chunks of yardage have resulted in Kentucky being ranked 14th in both yards and points allowed per game at marks of 389.9 and 30.1 respectively.

Auburn has quite the opposite problem on defense as they are sixth in the SEC with 318.5 yards allowed per game and fifth in the conference with 18.6 points allowed per game.

While the two teams are closely matched in terms of offensive numbers, the defensive statistics give the home team an advantage.

What do the odds say?

When it comes to the all-time series, Auburn has a 28-6-1 advantage and the last time Kentucky won against the Tigers was back in 2009.

For this edition of the matchup, Auburn is favored to win by 10.5 points according to ESPNBET. Also, Kentucky is given a 22.8% chance to get into the win column in conference play according to ESPN matchup predictor.

With the stage now set, Kentucky and Auburn will take the field on Saturday, Nov. 1 with kickoff set for 7:30 ET. The game will air live on SEC Network.

PHOTOS: No. 9 Kentucky basketball loses to Georgetown Hoyas, closes out exhibition play

Sydney Novack and Christian Kantosky

Basketball

Mens Basketball

Photo Galleries

Sports

georgetown basketball

kentucky basketball

mark pope

rupp arena

Kentucky men’s basketball lost its final exhibition game against Georgetown 84-70, before moving into the start of regular season play on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.

Gallery • 29 Photos

Kentucky Wildcats guard Collin Chandler (5) walks onto the court during the men’s basketball game against Georgetown on Thursday, Oct. 30, 2025, at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky.
