Lowe, a 6-foot-3, rising junior, had a breakout sophomore campaign in “the Burgh,” concluding the season with an average of 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, all a notable increase in comparison to his freshman season as a Panther.

Lowe’s 2024-25 numbers show that out of all incoming Kentucky transfers, the ascending junior had the highest points per game average last season, with Arizona State transfer Jayden Quaintance sitting in second, finishing with an average of 9.4 points per game.

In addition to that, Lowe also averaged the most assists out of all incoming transfers and it wasn’t even close as Quaintance, again, was the nearest with 1.5 assists per game.

But with such a notable rise in numbers and a demanding statistical lead in comparison to the other incoming Cats, Lowe still has a big fret tattooed onto his name as he was worryingly inconsistent last season, something even Pope acknowledged in an interview that he did with Kentucky Sports Radio.

“Jaland Lowe was elite in terms of raw stats. Points, assists, everything else he did in the game was really good,” Pope told KSR. “But he wasn’t a super-efficient player last year. Part of it was because he had to do a lot.”

However, what Pope didn’t mention is that Lowe played through a small, yet significant injury on his shooting hand.

Lowe’s father, Marland, joined WLAP’s Sunday Morning Sports Talk on April 20, just 15 days after Lowe announced his move to Lexington.

“From November through January, he (Jaland) was basically playing with a broken ring finger on his left hand,” Marland told WLAP.

The left hand that Marland mentioned happens to be his sons dominant shooting hand.

It’s hard not to wonder if Lowe’s finger injury caused the inconsistency that Pope touched on, or the heavy amount of work that Lowe had to do on a struggling Pittsburgh team that finished 17-15 while failing to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Lowe averaged a team-high 35.5 minutes per contest, which equates to him playing an average of 88.7% of each game. The closest player that was used as much as Lowe was fifth-year senior Ishmael Leggett, who played a near-similar 35.4 minutes per game.

On top of that, Lowe played a full 40 minutes in six different contests throughout the season and included in those six different games, was two games where he happened to play more than 40 minutes due to the contest reaching overtime.

Through the 31 games that Lowe played in, he finished with the lowest field-goal percentage (37.6%) in comparison to the five other Panthers who played in at least 30 games, but is worth noting that Lowe ripped off the highest number of field-goal attempts per game, tallying an average of 14.3 field-goal tries per game, with the second closest being Leggett, who attempted 12.4 field-goals per game.

Lowe accumulated a concerning 26.6% 3-point percentage while taking an average of five 3-pointers per game, which is alarming considering Pope historically likes to have his squads unleash a large amount of 3-pointers per game.

Lowe had 15 different games where he shot 20% or less when attempting at least three 3-point shots, however, he did show some flashes of strong deep ball shooting throughout the season, shooting 4-7 (57.1%) against LSU on Nov. 22, 4-9 (44.4%) against Mississippi State on Dec. 4 and 3-6 (50%) against North Carolina on Jan. 28.

Before playing through his injury, as a freshman, Lowe shot a near-similar 38.8% field-goal percentage but a notably better 35.2% 3-point percentage on an average of 2.3 less 3-point attempts per game, which brings back into the question just how much or if Lowe’s game really suffered at all due to the injury.

In the end, Lowe still averaged a brawny 16.8 points per game and saw his overall stats improve from the previous season.

Being more consistent would aid the Cats to greater success, but if Lowe could average anywhere near 16.8 points per game again, the transfer will be a great addition to Kentucky.

With Oklahoma City’s name now engraved onto the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, two former Kentucky guards will go down in history with the accomplishment, as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2018) and Cason Wallace (2023) both played important roles in the Thunder’s historic success, earning their first NBA Championship rings as well.

During the regular season, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged a league-high 32.7 points, five rebounds and a team-high 6.4 assists per game. As for Wallace, he factored into the team’s overall success as well, averaging 8.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game during the regular season, reaching a season-high 20 points on March 15 against the Detroit Pistons.

The Thunder finished the regular season with a 68-14 overall record, which tied the fifth-best single-season record in NBA history and marked the best single-season record in Oklahoma City history.

With that, the team earned the No. 1 overall seed in the west and swept the (8) Memphis Grizzlies in round one, beat Nikola Jokic and the (4) Denver Nuggets in round two and dominated Anthony Edwards and the (6) Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals, winning 4-1.

Throughout the entire course of the playoffs, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 29.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists while Wallace, who was playing in just his second postseason, averaged 5.6 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists.

In the Finals, through all seven games, SGA averaged a monstrous 30.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists throughout the seven-game series, while Wallace averaged six points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Gilgeous-Alexander was undoubtedly the main successor in Oklahoma City’s run, winning the 2025 NBA Regular Season MVP Award, the 2025 Western Conference Finals MVP Award and the 2025 NBA Finals MVP Award. SGA became the first player since Shaquille O’Neal (2000) to win both the Regular Season MVP Award and the NBA Finals MVP Award.

In the Thunder and Pacers’ do-or-die, Game 7 dual, with the pressure to complete his and the Thunder’s extraordinary campaign at a boiling point, Gilgeous-Alexander boasted a game-high 29 points, five rebounds and a game-high 12 assists, while shooting 8-27 (29.6%) from the field, 2-12 (16.7%) from deep and 11-12 (91.7%) from the free-throw line.

Wallace followed SGA’s Game 7 contributions by putting up ten points, two rebounds and three steals through 26 minutes of play off the bench, while shooting 4-6 (66.7%) from the field and 2-3 (66.7%) from beyond the 3-point arch.

The two Cats now join the list of 13 former Kentucky players that have had a chance to call themselves NBA Champions, both overruling Anthony Davis (2020 with the Lakers) as the most recent Cats to do so.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s phenomenal season was capped off with a massive payday on Tuesday as he inked a four-year, $285 million-dollar supermax contract.

Kentucky men’s basketball’s Amari Williams was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the No. 46 overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

Williams, a seven-foot center who exhausted his NCAA eligibility, became the second member of the 2024-25 Wildcats squad to get drafted, following in the footsteps of Koby Brea, who was drafted No. 41overall by the Phoenix Suns.

Before gearing up in the blue and white this past season, the fifth-year senior spent four seasons with the Drexel Dragons, finishing as its top scorer during the 2022-23 season and its second-highest scorer during the 2023-24 season.

At Kentucky, Williams served as the primary center and started all 36 games, averaging 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game, shooting 56.1% from the field and 62.3% from the free-throw line. Williams attempted only four 3-point field goals throughout the course of the season and sank one of them.

Williams scored a season-high 22 points in Kentucky’s 89-79 defeat to Arkansas on Feb. 1, shooting 9-13 from the field and 4-7 from the charity stripe.

Unlike some seven-footers these days, Williams still earns the majority of his points in the paint, never shying away from physicality, while almost never attempting to spot up a shot unless it’s down low.

“Something that I always questioned coming into this league was physicality. I knew that at Drexel I wasn’t able to show it as much, and it took me a while to adjust at this level,” Williams said.

“But ever since conference play has gone on, I’ve been managing it quite well, defensively and offensively. I’d say that’s something that caught me by surprise the most,” Williams said ahead of Kentucky’s final week of regular-season play.

Looking ahead to the NBA, Williams joins the likes of Hugo Gonzalez on the Celtics, where he will look to build a strong professional career and continue to dominate the paint.

Kentucky men’s basketball has added another name to its growing list of NBA draft picks, this time with the Wildcats’ 3-point juggernaut Koby Brea, who was selected by the Phoenix Suns No. 41 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

The Golden State Warriors initially held the pick but will instead receive the No. 52 and No. 59 selections from the Suns after trading the draft rights to Brea.

Brea, a 6-foot-7 guard out of New York, spent his fifth and final year of eligibility at Kentucky after playing four seasons 135 miles north of Lexington with the Dayton Flyers.

He became a vital piece of Mark Pope’s first-year campaign, quickly establishing himself as one of the best 3-point shooters in the nation and one of Kentucky’s top offensive contributors.

Through 36 games, he averaged 11.6 PPG, 3.2 RPG and 1.3 APG while shooting 47% from the field.

Kentucky Wildcats guard Koby Brea (4) takes a mid-range shot attempt during the basketball game vs. the Missouri Tigers on Tuesday, March. 8, 2025, at Mizzou Arena in Columbia, Missouri.
He shot 43.5% from 3-point range, one of the top marks in the country this season.

His 93 made 3-pointers tied for seventh-most in a single season in program history, and his 43.5% clip ranks fourth all-time among Kentucky players with at least 150 attempts.

Brea made at least one 3-pointer in 35 of 36 games and had multiple makes in 27 contests, including 24 straight to open the season.

He led the team in scoring eight times and posted 21 double-digit performances, including seven games with 20 or more points. He notched a career-high 23 points in wins over both No. 6 Florida and Illinois in the NCAA Tournament, while also reaching 1,000 career points during the season.

Before arriving in Lexington, Brea played four seasons in Dayton, Ohio, where he earned Atlantic 10 Sixth Man of the Year honors twice and led the nation in 3-point shooting percentage in 2023-24 at 49.8%.

He finished his college career with 1,264 points and 308 made 3s, shooting over 45% from long range.

Now, Brea looks to bring that same elite perimeter shooting to the professional ranks as he begins his NBA career with the Suns, alongside former Duke center Khaman Maluach, who was selected 10th overall.

UK Athletics’ assistant track and cross country coach Hakon DeVries has been suspended pending investigation by the university’s Office of Equal Opportunity.

University spokesperson Jay Blanton confirmed that DeVries has been suspended with pay.

DeVries recently completed his twelfth year with the Wildcats as assistant coach. He was initially hired by former track and field head coach Edrick Floreal, according to UK Athletics.

According to the university, the Office of Equal Opportunity “handles both internal and external complaints of discrimination, handles complaints of sexual misconduct, trains the University community on equal opportunity, [and] fosters a diverse and inclusive learning and working environment.”

This includes investigations of Title IX violations, which encompass both sexual harassment and sexual misconduct.

The suspension comes amid an ongoing federal sexual abuse lawsuit against the athletics department involving former head swim coach Lars Jorgensen. Jorgensen resigned in June 2023 after being named in the suit filed by former UK swimmers for both sexual abuse and rape allegations. The trial for the lawsuit is scheduled for June 2026 in Lexington.

“The university takes very seriously reports of inappropriate behavior,” Blanton said.

“Our Office of Equal Opportunity investigates thoroughly and recommends disciplinary measures depending on the findings and specifics of each case.”

On March 15, Tapiwanashe “Carlie” Makarawu ran a blistering 20.13 seconds in the 200m dash at the 2025 Indoor NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, winning the gold and tying the Zimbabwean record in the event.

Three months later, the Kentucky Wildcat lined up for the event once again in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Racing from lane nine at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, the Kentucky sprinter flew out of the blocks and surged through the curve, holding off a late charge from Zimbabwean Olympian Makanakaishe Charamba to claim the national title in 19.84 seconds.

The win came as a shock, with many unsure how Makarawu would bounce back after suffering an injury at the Tom Jones Memorial meet in April.

However, against all odds, Makarawu cut his previous time by a mere 0.29 seconds, not only setting a personal best but also shattering the school record and the Zimbabwean national record.

He is now No. 2 in the world this year, which is tied for the ninth-fastest time in NCAA history and ranks as the seventh-fastest collegiate performer ever.

If that wasn’t enough, he is now 11th all-time in Africa and owns this year’s national record for the event.

Charamba, representing Auburn, finished close behind with a time of 19.92 seconds. The Zimbabwe sprinting duo took the top two spots on the podium.

Trailing the Zimbabweans was Garrett Kaalund of USC, who broke the 20-second barrier for the first time to claim third in 19.96 seconds.

Just missing the podium was a name that may sound familiar to Big Blue Nation: Jordan Anthony. The former Kentucky wide receiver and sprinter, now competing for Arkansas, finished fourth in 20.01 seconds.

The dual-sport athlete has continued both his football and track careers with the Razorbacks since transferring in 2022.

T’Mars McCallum, the early-season world leader from Tennessee, finished fifth in 20.16 seconds.

USC’s Max Thomas followed in sixth with 20.23, Xavier Butler of Texas ran 20.39 to place seventh and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu of South Florida rounded out the heat in 20.55 seconds.

After successfully sweeping the event in Nationals this year, he added 10 points to the team total.

Makarawu helped Kentucky finish tied for eighth in the team standings with 22 total points.

The Harare native will now set his sights on the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo this September, where he will represent his native country alongside some of the NCAA’s best to compete against the best athletes the sport has ever seen.

On one of the biggest stages in American swimming, Carson Hick found himself racing against some of the sport’s most decorated athletes in the 1,500-meter freestyle.

Hick placed fourth in the nation at the 2025 Toyota USA Swimming National Championships, breaking the Kentucky program record with a time of 15:05.87.

He finished behind two-time Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke, eight-time All-American and U.S. Olympian David Johnston along with top-ranked recruit Aidan Hammer.

Just behind Hick, Levi Sandidge finished eighth, making Kentucky the only program to place two swimmers in the A final of the 1,500.

However, that was only the beginning of the dynamic duo’s success throughout the week.

Hick, a rising junior out of New Mexico, carried his momentum into the 800-meter freestyle, finishing eighth in the nation with a time of 7:56.16. He also broke another Kentucky program record in the 400 freestyle, placing third in the B final with a time of 3:50.11.

Sandidge, a senior and three-time All-SEC honoree, added his own mark to the record books in the 400 individual medley. He won the B final in 4:16.10, the fourth-fastest time overall in the event and a new school record.

Hick’s performance earned him a spot on Team USA for the 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany, where he will compete among the world’s best in the 1,500 freestyle. Incoming sophomore diver Avery Giese also qualified for the Games and will be competing in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard.

The games, held July 17-23, are a global competition organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), where student-athletes from around the world compete in 18 different sports, including swimming, diving, basketball and volleyball.

The qualifying meet took place in Indianapolis, bringing together the top swimmers in the country to compete for spots on Team USA ahead of the World Aquatics Championships, set for July 11 through Aug. 3 in Singapore.

Alongside Hick and Sandidge, Ryan Merani, Maddy Hartley, Grace Frericks and Devin Naoroz competed for their potential spot on the team.

Merani, a surging senior and two-time NCAA qualifier, competed in three events: the 100 and 200 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. His top performance came in the 200 fly, where he posted a 1:59.02 to finish second in the C final.

Naoroz made his Nationals debut in both the 50 and 100 backstroke, finishing seventh in the C final of the 50 back with a time of 25.92 and placed in the top 30 in the 100.

On the women’s side, Hartley competed in the 200 butterfly and finished 37th overall, while Frericks swam in the 200 backstroke and finished 45th.

The 2025 Toyota USA Swimming National Championships capped off a historic stretch for Kentucky swimming.

The men’s team went from the program’s highest placement since 2010 by finishing 20th in the nation at the NCAA Championships to defeating Tennessee for the first time in 77 years, the Wildcats have already rewritten parts of the record book.

Add in a wave of elite coaching hires during the offseason, and the message is becoming clear: Kentucky is not just rebuilding, it is rising.

As first reported by ESPN, Marrow has accepted a three-year deal to become the general manager of the Cardinals football program.

Marrow joined Kentucky in 2013 as part of Mark Stoops’ original staff and has since held multiple key roles, including tight ends coach, recruiting coordinator and most recently associate head coach.

Under his leadership as recruiting coordinator, all 12 of Kentucky’s signing classes ranked inside the top 40 nationally, peaking in 2022 when the Wildcats secured the No. 14 class, according to 247Sports.

Nineteen of the 25 highest-rated recruits in program history committed during his tenure, and he helped bring in 37 four-star prospects and four future first-round NFL Draft picks.

Much of his success arose from a deep recruiting network in his home state of Ohio, which became an essential part of Kentucky’s recruiting strategy under Stoops.

Marrow was slated to make $1.3 million this season, placing him among the highest-paid position coaches in college football.

However, by taking a noncoaching executive position at Louisville, he reportedly bypassed Kentucky’s contractual buyout clause, which only applies to on-field coaching departures.

His exit marks the end of an era in Lexington and the start of a new chapter in one of college football’s most heated rivalries.

West Virginia had the advantage in the matchup as they were 2-0 in the regional and did not play a game on Sunday like the Bat Cats.

Since all the members of the weekend rotation for Kentucky have thrown the three games thus far in the regional, the Wildcats turned to Scott Rouse.

After getting a quick first out, Logan Sauve tagged the righty for a home run to open the scoring.

The deficit was short-lived as the Bat Cats loaded the bases with one out thanks to three walks.

Devin Burkes came through with a single that brought home two runs and flipped the scales as the scoreboard now read 2-1 Kentucky.

Luke Lawrence reached on an infield single to reload the bases and Cole Hage matched Burkes’ two-run single with one of his own to extend the Kentucky lead to 4-1.

Rouse responded on the mound with another three-up, three-down inning.

The Bat Cats manufactured another run in the third as Carson Hansen led off with a single and scored on the next batter after Patrick Herrera roped a double down the left-field line.

Rouse responded with another three-up, three-down.

The Wildcats plate another run in the third on a James McCoy sacrifice fly that gave Kentucky a 6-1 lead.

Rouse extended his consecutive batters retired streak to nine before things got away from him quickly. Back-to-back singles and hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out.

A groundball to Tyler Bell looked like an easy double play, but it was mishandled by the freshman as a run scored, and the bases remained loaded.

Ben Lumsden singled to bring home two runs, which ended Rouse’s outing. Jackson Nove was called upon to work out of the jam and he hit the first batter he faced before giving up a single that scored two more runs and tied the game.

The lefty walked Kyle West to reload the bases, which ended Nove’s outing as Simon Gregersen was next out of the bullpen.

Sauve hit a slow grounder back to Gregersen and he chose to take the out at first instead of home, which allowed the go-ahead run to score for the Mountaineers.

Kentucky answered right back in the fifth as Herrera and Ryan Schwartz singled to allow Hudson Brown to tie the game 7-7 on a single of his own.

Burkes and Lawrence were both hit-by-pitches to reload the bases and Hage drew a walk that gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead.

The Wildcats got right back on the board in the sixth as Brown launched a two-run home run that boosted the lead to 10-7.

Following the homer, Burkes walked and stole second before scoring on a groundball off the bat of Lawrence that got past the infield that extended the Cats lead to 11-7.

Burkes added a huge insurance run with a home run in the eighth that extended the Wildcats lead to 12-7.

West Virginia came alive in the eighth as two singles and walk off of Tommy Skelding loaded the bases.

Skelding gave up a bases-loaded walk that shrunk the lead to 12-8.

Nick Mingione popped out of the Kentucky dugout to get the right-hander and replace him with Nile Adcock.

Adcock gave up a two-run single that slimmed the Kentucky lead to 12-10. The right-hander threw two straight balls before Mingione came back out of the dugout, but this time with a glove as McCoy was moving from first to the mound.

He spiked a pitch to move both runners into scoring position before a single tied the ballgame 12-12.

McCoy gave up another single, which ended his outing as Hayden Smith was called upon. Armani Guzman singled right to bring home another run that gave the Mountaineers a 13-12 lead and ultimately ended Kentucky’s season.

Kentucky finishes 2025 with a 31-26 record as a season that was full of heartbreaks for the Bat Cats ends with the biggest one of them all.

The 16-run outburst tied the most runs ever scored by Kentucky in an NCAA Tournament game.

Both teams came into this elimination game 1-1 in the regional as Kentucky lost its first game against West Virginia before beating USC Upstate in an elimination game yesterday.

The Tigers took down USC Upstate in their first game before falling to West Virginia in their second game to set the stage for the clash with the Wildcats.

Freshman Nate Harris took the mound first as Kentucky was the home team for this elimination game and he got off to a great start by striking out Cam Cannarella.

However, things began to unravel for the right-hander as two walks and a single loaded the bases.

Harris spiked a pitch which allowed a run to score and a groundout brought home another run, which gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Clemson also sent a freshman to the hill as Talan Bell took the ball on his home mound. Like Harris, the nerves were showing a bit as Bell hit Tyler Bell and James McCoy to bring up Carson Hansen who singled to center and easily scored Bell.

However, that was not all as the Tigers could not handle the throw and the ball went all over the backstop and ended up in the Kentucky dugout, which allowed McCoy to score and tie the game 2-2 after one.

Harris settled down over the next two innings as he pitched two scoreless frames in the second and third.

Clemson gifted Kentucky the lead as Hage took a wild trip around the bases that started with an infield single that advanced him to second on a throwing error. The senior moved to third on a botched pickoff attempt and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bat Cats the lead.

While that sequence was going on, Bell drew a walk and moved to second on the wild pitch that scored Hage. Carson Hansen singled to score Bell.

Patrick Herrera was up next, and he drew a walk, but a passed ball on ball four allowed McCoy to score.

Ryan Schwartz singled to bring home Herrera and Hasen, which extended the newfound Kentucky lead to 7-2.

Harris gave up a leadoff single to Jack Crighton to start the fourth and he ended up scoring on three wild pitches from the right-hander in the inning.

However, the Bat Cats got the run right back as Devin Burkes singled and scored on a Luke Lawrence double. Hage traded places with Lawrence with a double of his own to extend the lead.

After Hage moved to third on a Bell single, McCoy drove him home on a sacrifice fly. Three consecutive singles brought home two more runs for Kentucky before an error capped off a six-run frame for Kentucky that extended the lead to 13-3.

The Bat Cats continued to pour it on in the sixth as a Hudson Brown double plated Herrera and Schwartz.

The Tigers added a run in the seventh to result in the 16-4 score.

The Wildcats scored 16 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of seven Clemson errors. The Bat Cats were also expectational with runners in scoring position as the team was 8-14, which is a .571 average.

Kentucky will now need to beat West Virginia at 6 p.m. tonight and again tomorrow to keep its season alive.
