20.
Returning Raider Nation’s questions for the week as we reach another offseason milestone, post-June 1

As the calendar turns, we’ve reached another checkpoint in the Las Vegas Raiders offseason. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about what could happen when the Raiders get some extra cap space after the post-June 1 designation from Jimmy Garoppolo’s release. So, be on the lookout for some news coming out of Las Vegas soon but, before that, let’s get to this week’s mailbag!

  21.
Question: What, if anything, has been surprising about the Raiders offseason?

  22.
Answer: Drafting Brock Bowers has to take the cake. Anyone who says they saw that coming is lying as that was one of the biggest surprises in the entire league on draft night. The only other pick that rivals it is the Atlanta Falcons taking Michael Penix Jr., which played a significant hand in the Raiders taking Bowers. That being said, it wasn’t shocking to see Las Vegas get squeezed out from taking a quarterback as I mentioned a few times that could happen leading up to the draft.

  23.
I’m also a little surprised the Raiders weren’t more aggressive in addressing their offensive line and cornerback situations this offseason. Granted, the guard market ended up being ridiculous, so I can’t say I blame the front office for not handing out a bunch of cash in free agency. Also, there are still some decent corner options still available. So, maybe, the job isn’t done there yet.

  24.
Q: Any thoughts on Byron Young on the defensive line?

  25.
A: Honestly, I’m not holding out much hope for him. I thought Young was drafted at least a round too early and has the ceiling of being a decent to good run defender but not much beyond that. He even struggled in that role last year, so my expectations for him are pretty low.

  26.
He’ll probably end up making the team, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Young is on the chopping block in training camp. This is a new regime that didn’t draft him, making it easier for Tom Telesco and Antonio Pierce to cut the second-year pro loose a year after being a top 100 selection.

  27.

I was more impressed by seventh-rounder Nesta Jade Silvera in 2023 and am more intrigued by his potential right now.

  28.
Q: Are the Raiders still on the hook for Chandler Jones’ contact?

  29.
A: Yes. According to Over The Cap, Jones still accounts for just under $12.3 million of dead cap in 2024, nearly half of their $25 million dead cap figure. So, that will go down as one of the worst signings in franchise history. Luckily, this is the last year the Raiders are on the hook for Jones and they do still have plenty of funds available despite that waste of money.

  30.
Q: Has there ever been a reason given for why Davis wants Brady among those who own a piece of the Raiders? If he’s getting equity in return for work, what will that work be?

  31.

  33. Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images
  34.
Tom Brady, Mark Davis

  35.

  36.
A: Specifically or straight from Mark Davis, not that I’m aware of. But Mark has been vocal that he likes to surround himself with people who he considers to be good football minds since that’s one area he lacks compared to his father. Obviously, Tom Brady has been very successful in the NFL, so I think Davis wants Brady in his corner as a sounding board and this is one way to get him.

  37.
Also, there’s a little bit of a marketing element to it as Brady is a big brand even as just an individual, so having him associated with the organization can improve its perceived value.

  38.
Q: Agree or disagree — Is AOC being disrespected because he went in the fourth round instead of how well he played last season?

  39.
A: Disagree. If Aidan O’Connell played like a first-round pick last year, Pierce, Telesco and everyone else wouldn’t be talking about having a quarterback competition in training camp and would be pumping him up this offseason instead.

  40.
Also, the front office wouldn’t have signed Gardner Minshew to a contract with a lot of incentives had O’Connell looked like a sure-fire starter. I still like the second-year pro to win that job this summer, but the discourse around him is a result of his play regardless of where he was drafted.

  41.

  42.
R8iderEddie

  43.

  44.
Matt,

  45.
Word on the street is JPJ is hurt. Can you provide some details on this. Is he expected to miss mini-camp? Also, any other injuries of note over these few OTA sessions
  46.

  47.

  48.

  49.
A: Teams don’t have to release injury information during OTAs, so I don’t have much more information on what’s bugging Jackson Powers-Johnson. However, I wouldn’t be too concerned about it as teams are usually pretty cautious this time of year since we’re still several months away from the start of the season.

  50.
If JPJ is still out during mandatory minicamp — June 11 to 13 — then it’d be a little concerning, and if he misses part of training camp, that’s when it starts to become an issue. But right now, it’s good that he’s at least getting mental reps and starting to learn the offense. Obviously, it’s not ideal that Powers-Johnson is not on the field, but I wouldn’t fret over him missing voluntary workouts.

  51.

  52.
asa1658

  53.

Can you give us any insight at all into what's going on in camp ala which QB is looking sharper than the rest?

  54.

  55.
A: For clarity, I’m not in Vegas for OTAs so I don’t have more information than what’s been reported by others.

  56.
From what I’ve seen, O’Connell seems to have the early lead in the competition. However, The Athletic’s Tashan Reed noted that the Raiders are still rotating the quarterbacks.

  57.

  58.
“The Raiders have continued to rotate quarterbacks Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew frequently with the starting lineup,” Reed wrote on May 29. “The coaching staff is still in the early stages of determining who the starter will be entering 2024, and that cycling will likely continue well into training camp.

  59.
“‘It’s competitive,’” quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello said. ‘They both have incredibly good personalities and they balance each other well. They’re different in how they approach it and they’re different in how they play, but their mindsets are similar. They’re bringing out the best in each other. We’re throwing a lot at ’em, and they’ve handled it well.’”

  60.

  61.
Also, the team’s digital reporter Levi Edwards noted that O’Connell’s pocket presence and release have improved while Minshew has shown the ability to buy time with his legs.

  62.

  63.
RaiderPike95123

  64.

How much of our leftover 2024 cap space can we carry into 2025?

  65.

  66.
A: The NFL allows teams to roll over any unused cap space from one year to the next, the clubs just have to let the league know by the day after the final regular season game, per Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson. However, the front office won’t necessarily roll over all of the unused cap space because they have to spend at least 89 percent of the total cap to avoid a penalty.

  67.
<div data-anthem-component="readmore" data-anthem-component-data='{"stories":[{"title":"Re-visiting Raiders’ 2021 NFL Draft class: Where are Alex Leatherwood and 6 other picks now? But, we won’t know how much cap Las Vegas can roll over until the end of the regular season. So, the number is going to chance since the front office might bring someone in during training camp and will likely make a few midseason signings as injuries occur.

  88.
  89.
Las Vegas star ranks as a top five-5 pass-rusher entering the season

The Las Vegas Raiders defense finished the end of the year strong, led by edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Crosby has become one of the most feared football players for motor skills and talent, especially in the edge rusher position.

  90.
In 2023, Crosby finished with a career-high 14.5 sacks and had 52 during his five seasons. He is now matched with Christian Wilkins and could help create one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.

  91.
Recently, PFF.com dropped its edge rusher rankings heading into the season. Crosby ended up at number five behind TJ Watt, Micah Parsons, Nick Bosa, and Myles Garrett.

  92.

Crosby is often the first name mentioned outside of “The Big 4” above, but it really should be viewed as a “Big 5,” given how impactful Crosby has been for years. 2023 was his third straight year of earning an elite overall grade, and it was his first elite run-defense grade while maintaining a pass-rush win rate above 15.0% and notching 94 quarterback pressures.

  93.
Crosby is primarily ranked behind the "Big 4" because of his overall win rate. However, Bosa is the only player ranked in front of the Raiders leader on defense who played more than 800 defensive snaps. Crosby plays every play with his hair on fire, and advanced stats can't always reflect the impact.

  94.
If the Raiders can find a way to win more games in 2024, Crosby can raise this list.

  122.
Raiders defense 2024: Marcus Epps needs to get in on the takeaway front

  128.

  129.
  130.
Veteran safety a steady leader and communicator, but more is needed from him

If there was one specific aspect of the Las Vegas Raiders that exuded the swagger head coach Antonio Pierce wants out of his football team, it was the defense.

  131.
The bravado and confidence spread like wildfire on Patrick Graham’s side of the ball and one of the lasting image of the 2023 campaign was seeing Raiders cornerback Jack Jones stare down Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes as the defensive back ran into the end zone for a touchdown after he read the signal caller like a book for an interception Christmas Day.

  132.
So it was no surprise to hear what Jones said on Wednesday after the team’s organized team activity (OTA) when asked how the Raiders maintain that brashness going forward.

  133.

“Making plays. You build confidence from plays, from work. Putting in the work, that’s where the confidence comes from,” Jones simply said.

  134.
Easy to say but often difficult to do. While Las Vegas did finish with the ninth-ranked defense in terms of points allowed (331 total yielded) and that’s a dramatic improvement from what the Raiders fielded in prior years, there’s room for improvement (always). Graham’s group was middle of the pack in terms of sacks (14th with 46), interceptions (18th with 13), and forced fumbles (18th with 14). Las Vegas was second to last in passes defensed with 56, just one more than the Tennessee Titans who ranked 32nd in the league in that category. That said, the Silver & Black finished No. 5 in interceptions returned for a score with three and third in fumbles returned for a touchdown with two.

  135.
The Raiders have the talent and another season with the core group and addition of elite defensive tackle Christian Wilkins should elevate the Graham’s defense even further.

  136.
One particular defender who can make a leap is safety Marcus Epps.

  137.

  138.

  140.

  141.
  142.
  143.

  144.
The 28-year-old heading into his seventh season in the league was brought in on a two-year, $12-million deal in free agency in 2023 to be both a lead-by-example type for young safety Tre’Von Moehrig and steady veteran presence in the defensive backfield. From the get-go, Epps and Moehrig were attached at the hip with the young safety constantly picking Epps’ brain.

  145.

“Man, he’s awesome,” Moehrig said during his offseason sync with Epps last year. “That’s my dawg, ever since we came in the first day we’ve been talking, just picking his brain about what he knows, and he’s been picking my brain just trying to help each other out. But outside of football, he’s just a good person and just fun to be around.”

  146.
The close-knit nature of the relationship was on full display as Epps’ presence allowed Moehrig to play with more freedom and make plays as the 24-year-old safety finished fifth in total tackles (83), tied for the team lead in interceptions (three), and the team leader in passes defensed (eight). The duo of Moehrig and Epps also rarely left the field as the former led Las Vegas with 1,106 defensive snaps (97.62 percent) and the latter finishing fourth with 1,031 snaps (91 percent). For reference, linebacker Robert Spillane was second with 1,101 defensive snaps (97.18 percent) and edge rusher Maxx Crosby finished third with 1,081 snaps (95.41 percent).

  147.
With Moehrig’s elevated production and confidence, the 2024 campaign is ample time for Epps to increase his own output — especially in the takeaways department. The veteran totaled 66 tackles in 2023 with three pass deflections and one forced fumble and fumble recovery, but no interceptions. Epps has always been light in interceptions — he only has three total, two coming in 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he’s got the vision, anticipation, and savvy that portends to more takeaways.

  148.
Epps’ cap number this season demands better production, really. Slated to earn slightly over $7.29 million on his final season of his two-year pact, the sixth-round pick from the 2019 NFL Draft sits at No. 17 overall in terms of cap number at the safety position in 2024. It’s time to go from veteran leader to play maker this coming year. And with Wilkins joining the defensive line with Crosby, the chaos at the line of scrimmage and in the backfield should allow other defenders to thrive — like Epps. By becoming more disruptive and effective against both the run and pass, Epps will help Las Vegas’ defense ascend to greater heights.

  149.

As noted above, Epps is going to be playing for himself as much as he is for the Silver & Black. Like a slew of other Raiders in a contract year, Epps is in a similar boat to core players as linebackers Divine Deablo and Spillane, edge rusher Malcolm Koonce, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and Moehrig. Each are slated to hit unrestricted free agency next March absent a new contract.

  150.
And the coin that group garners — with the Raiders or another team — will depend highly on their individual 2024 season performance. So the incentive to perform well is doubly important as if each play at a high level and are productive, it helps Las Vegas stack more Ws in the win column while at the same time, potentially stacking their respective earning power as players headed towards the open market.

  169.
  170.
There are some big-money receiver tandems this season

The wide receiver contract market has been booming this offseason and there have been several players at the position who have received lucrative contracts and there are more to come.

  171.
An interesting aspect of these extensions are that teams are committing big dollars to multiple receivers as was the case this week than the Miami Dolphins gave a huge deal to Jaylen Waddle.

  172.
There are now five teams that playing two receivers, at least, $20 million this season.

  173.

  174.

  175.
There are five NFL teams that are paying two WRs at least $20M per season:

- #Dolphins: Tyreek Hill & Jaylen Waddle
- #Eagles: A.J. Brown & DeVonta Smith
- #Texans: Stefon Diggs & Nico Collins
- #Bears: DJ Moore & Keenan Allen
- #Bucs: Mike Evans & Chris Godwin https://t.co/mmslwxPnsH
— Ari Meirov (@MySportsUpdate) May 30, 2024
  176.

  177.
  178.
  179.

  180.
The Las Vegas Raiders have a fairly highly-paid pair of receivers in Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers.

  181.
After trading for Adams in 2022, the Raiders made him at the top of receiver pay chain with a five-year, $140 million deal with an average of $28 million a year.

  182.
In 2023, the Raiders paired Meyers with Adams as they gave him a free-agency deal of three years for $33 million.

  183.
So, Adams and Meyers aren’t at the top of the receiver pay scale, but the Raiders are committing the sixth most to their wide receiver room this season.

  184.
The two combined for 174 receptions, 1,951 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2023. So, this tandem is a highly-productive pair and now, after the extension frenzy at the position, a reasonably-priced pair as well.

  455.
Putting post June-1 cap relief to work

The Las Vegas Raiders are scheduled to get a salary-cap boost after June 1 (Saturday) after some cap moves earlier in the year.

  456.
The Raiders have plenty of of cap room, so they can do a lot of things.

  457.
We used our Tuesday Community Question this week to ask readers how they would like to see the Raiders use some of that relief.

  458.

There were plenty of strong option such as giving contract extensions to young defensive players such as pass-rusher Malcolm Koonce, cornerback Nate Hobbs and safety Tre’von Moehrig?

  459.
Predictably, extending the contract of Koonce — who had a big breakout season in 2023 — heading into his contract season was a popular choice.

  460.
Here are some of your responses:

  461.

  462.
MantecaRaider

  463.

  464.
Sign or trade for a veteran corner, extend Hobbs, extend koonce.

  465.

  466.
In that order.

  467.

  468.

  469.

  470.
RaiderPovi17

  471.

  472.
fill the needs that the staff sees as a need. extend the players that they see fit their plans for the future and are earning that extension. not just a flash in the pan, but a sustained effort and results.

  473.

  474.
save something for a vet that can help if we are on a playoff run.

  475.

  476.

  477.

  478.
IronClaw

  479.

  480.
Roll as much as possible over to 2025 off season so we're in shape to be big players in FAs. Early projections say next years cap increase will be small maybe just $10M so having extra cap will be very important. Cap projections say the Raiders will have some $25M as 2025 cap space so if we can roll another $25M over we could be players.

  481.

  482.
2024 is about building a PO contender but 2025 is about chasing the Ring so maybe being one or two players away from SB contenders will be a possibility. Be a real shame to be almost there but not able to make the necessary moves to reach our goal.

  483.

  484.

  485.

  487.

  488.
Extend Malcolm Koonce before its too late and we can't afford him!

  489.

  490.
I think Koonce will lead the Raiders in sacks this upcoming season.

  491.

  492.

  493.

  499.

Signing a vet CB. They had cap space already to extend people, not a priority at this point. Getting a starting CB is the priority! Nelson would be my choice!!

  500.

  501.

  531.
  532.
Las Vegas could still add a veteran

The Las Vegas Raiders have added to their cornerback position during the draft by taking Mississippi State’s Decamerion Richardson in the fourth round and Pitt’s MJ Devonshire in the seventh round.

  533.
Let’s take a look where the position stands after the draft:

  534.
New free agent added:

  535.
None.

  536.
Free agents re-signed:

  537.
None

  538.
Free agent who departed:

  539.
Amik Robertson (Detroit Lions), Tyler Hall (Philadelphia Eagles).

  540.
Remaining unrestricted free agents:

  541.
None.

  542.
Draft:

  543.
Richardson was selected in the fourth round at No. 112. Devonshire was the 229th pick.

  544.
Conclusion:

  545.
The Raiders will likely add a veteran at some point. Las Vegas general Tom Telesco said earlier in the offseason that the team would likely add a cornerback in free agency. Among the options are Xavien Howard, Steven Nelson and Stephon Gilmore. Richardson is athletic and has excellent size and speed. But he will need to develop. The Raiders could still use a starter to go along with Jack Jones and nickel Nate Hobbs. the Raiders were expected to take a game-ready cornerback early. Since they didn’t expect them to look at the veteran group.

  565.
DraftKings has Week 1 point props available

The last time the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Chargers met, it was an unforgettable blowout as the Raiders smoked the listless Chargers 63-21 on nationally-televised Thursday night game in December.

  566.
The two teams will go right back at it in Week 1 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

  567.
If you think the Raiders, a slight underdog in the game, will register another beatdown of the Chargers, there is money to be made.

  568.
According to our friends at DraftKings Sportsbook, there is Week 1 game prop bets available for the game. There are point-range odds for each teams winning. For example, f the Raiders win by between 25-30 points, it will pay 40-1. The spreads vary, but if you’re smelling another Antonio Pierce execution of the Chargers, you can put your money on it.
