41.
The figure nearly matches the $1.45 billion his campaign and outside groups raised for the 2024 election, according to Open Secrets. The figure appears even more impressive as the campaign committee had a mere $9.8 million in cash on hand following the election.

 42.
The $1.4 billion sum would be a staggering amount on its own heading into the midterms and could signal that Trump has the strength to wage both aggressive primary challenges to disfavored Republicans and to boost competitive candidates on the national stage without much tradeoff.

 72.
“Our arrest numbers as they stand, are about 250,000 and we want those numbers up, we want to turbo charge them,” Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin told this reporter on the “John Solomon Reports” podcast.

 73.
With the administration taking over in late January, those figures point to an arrest rate of roughly 50,000 per month, which would put the administration on course to arrest roughly 2.4 million people by the end of his term. But Trump has set an ambitious target of deporting all illegal aliens from the U.S., putting the total at 21 million.

 141.
“Everyone’s got a good idea of what the [drug] situation is, but we have very little direct measurement,” said Jerico Mele, a human services director for Nantucket, a Massachusetts island. “When we get away from our gut to getting data, we get a better picture of what’s going on.”

 142.
A 2021 report by the National Drug Intelligence Center said cocaine and specifically crack were the biggest drug threat to Nantucket and its surrounding areas.

 143.
But just how much cocaine, fentanyl and other opiates are in Nantucket’s sewage? The town does not plan on posting the results publicly, though they may be shared with healthcare partners, according to Mele.

 144.
The new drug testing initiative is an expansion of the town’s COVID-19 sewage testing at the Surfside Wastewater Treatment Facility.

 145.
Nantucket has partnered with the Cambridge firm Biobot, testing sewage weekly for COVID-19, since the beginning of the pandemic, which has not been a national emergency in the U.S. since April 2023.

 146.
Those same samples will now be used to test for drugs in order to catch signs of alarming drug trends.

 147.
“They can use the same samples we take,” Nantucket Sewer Department head David Gray said. “The numbers will be interesting. They want to get a baseline, and that’s the reason we test for COVID. It’s going to be data that is a great forecasting tool.”

 148.
Data from the sewage samples will help Nantucket residents and first-responders fight the counry’s opioid crisis.

 149.
“If we can get an idea of the standard usage of drugs, we can see if interventions and behaviors change the rate of consumption,” Mele said. “That can give us a scorecard on the efforts and reducing usage.”

 150.
Nantucket’s population is estimated at 14,250 people, according to a 2024 census. However, in the summer months the population on the island — which largely relies on tourism — increases to around 80,000 or more, according to the local government.

 165.
An attorney for Selzer told NPR that there has been no settlement. Attorneys for Trump and the Des Moines Register did not immediately return a request for comment.

 166.
Trump sued the newspaper and the longtime Iowa pollster following the release of a poll in the last days of the 2024 presidential contest that found former Vice President Harris was winning the Hawkeye State by 3 percentage points, a result that temporarily buoyed Democrats’ hopes. Trump won Iowa by 14 points.

 167.
Seltzer announced in November that she would retire from polling, having previously decided not to continue her contract with the paper.

 168.
In December, attorneys for Trump filed suit against her and the Des Moines Register in state court, accusing them of violating Iowa’s consumer fraud laws and charging that the polling miss was intentional.

 181.
Abrego Garcia’s attorneys had asked the judge to delay his release because of what they described as “contradictory statements” by President Donald Trump’s administration over what would happen to the Salvadoran national. The lawyers wrote in a brief to the court Friday that “we cannot put any faith in any representation made on this issue” by the Justice Department, adding that the “irony of this request is not lost on anyone.”

 182.
Justice Department spokesman Chad Gilmartin told The Associated Press on Thursday that the department intends to try Abrego Garcia on the smuggling charges before it moves to deport him, stating that Abrego Garcia “has been charged with horrific crimes.”

 183.
Hours earlier, Justice Department attorney Jonathan Guynn told a federal judge in Maryland that the US government plans to deport Abrego Garcia to a “third country” that isn’t El Salvador. Guynn said there was no timeline for the deportation plans.

 184.
Abrego Garcia’s attorneys on Friday cited Guynn’s comments as a reason to fear he would be deported “immediately.”

 217.
A Jane Doe filed suit June 20 against the Cambria Heights School District and Isaac Vescovi, who was arrested in October and earlier this year pleaded guilty to intercourse/sexual contact with a 17-year-old student.

 218.
District Attorney Greg Neugebauer told WJAC that Vescovi had sent the student more than 4,000 messages. Vescovi was sentenced in April to up to two years in jail.

 219.
Now, the school district is in legal trouble, with the lawsuit claiming the district failed to properly train, supervise and discipline its employees.

 220.
“The District had in place a policy and/or custom of ignoring reports of sexual violence and/or assault against female students,” the lawsuit says.

 221.
“The District had in place a policy and/or custom of permitting dangerous and sexually violent teachers to remain employed in the schools of the District.”

 222.
Vescovi was the student’s homeroom teacher for three years and in the 2022-23 school year was also her math teacher. The lawsuit says he spent his time during homeroom grooming the student with inappropriate flirting.

 223.
When she was 16, the student received social media messages from Vescovi that escalated to “explicit pictures and videos” on Snapchat and in text messages. Vescovi “persuaded” the student to visit him alone in his classroom, where they would engage in “inappropriate and illicit touching, kissing and groping,” the suit says.

 224.
They started doing the same in various parking lots in Altoona during summer 2023. The student was 16 at the time.

 225.
“News of these ‘dates’ to Altoona became widely known throughout the District, leading District personnel to question Vescovi about his relationship with Plaintiff, which resulted in Vescovi admitting to District personnel that he was ‘hanging out’ with Plaintiff,” the suit says.

 226.
“Nonetheless, the District refused and/or failed to report the illicit relatinship or take any action to protect Plaintiff from her assailant.”

 227.
Vescovi, a former collegiate player, was also the girl’s coach on the school’s basketball team. In summer 2024, they started having sexual intercourse at his home, the suit says, and in a hotel room in Indiana.

 228.
Cambria Heights had notice this relationship was illegal, the suit says. Vescovi was 29 years old when he was arrested in October.

 229.
“The relationship was so well-known at Cambria Heights that the student body submitted and voted for Plaintiff and Vescovi as the ‘cutest couple’ for the yearbook,” the suit says.

 230.
At least one student and teacher reported the relationship, but Cambria Heights’ reponse showed a “reckless disregard of the actual knowledge that Vescovi was sexually assaulting Plaintiff,” the suit says.

 231.
In the aftermath, the student says she has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, depression, nightmares, shame and loss of reputation. She is represented by Ronald Carnevali, Jr. of Spence, Custer, Saylor, Wolfe & Rose.

 246.
But the justices took no action in cases from Arizona, Idaho and West Virginia involving the participation of transgender students on school sports teams. The court could say as soon as Thursday whether it will take up the issue in its next term.

 247.
The high court ordered appellate judges to reexamine cases from Idaho, North Carolina, Oklahoma and West Virginia involving access to medical care and birth certificates.

 248.
The action was unsurprising because the court had set the cases aside until after it decided the Tennessee case, as typically happens when the same legal issue is being considered.

 249.
The rulings all included findings that the restrictions on transgender people imposed by the states violate the Constitution’s equal protection clause.

 250.
In the Tennessee case, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no constitutional violation in a state law prohibiting puberty blockers and hormone therapy to treat gender dysphoria in people younger than 18.

 264.
The city hosted its first budget engagement roundtable Saturday at Truman College.

 265.
Mayor Brandon Johnson told participants that he wanted working people to have a voice in the budgeting process.

 266.
“The knowledge and input that you bring forward allow us to think critically about how we allocate funding towards the things that truly matter,” the mayor said.

 267.
“We’re entering a budget season unlike any the city has experienced,” stated Chicago Budget Director Annette Guzman. “The City faces difficult decisions ahead and we want to know residents’ priorities so we can be strategic and laser focused with our budget. It’s Chicagoans’ voices that will help us get there.”

 268.
Guzman told roundtable participants on Saturday that the budget has been structurally out of balance for decades. Guzman said expenditures have increased about 8% and blamed President Donald Trump for rising prices.

 269.
“You know, we have a president in Washington that has instituted a trade war that’s driving costs up every single day,” Guzman said.

 270.
Guzman also noted that city revenues have not grown.

 271.
Chicago Flips Red founder Zoe Leigh said it is shameful and disrespectful for members of Johnson’s administration to blame a president who has only been in office for six months.

 272.
“It shows that you guys are not taking any acknowledgement of the wrongdoing that you guys have done and continue to do. You’re not making anything better, even with these roundtables,” Leigh told The Center Square.

 273.
Leigh said Johnson could have done what Atlanta’s mayor did by offering sanctuary status without providing financial assistance to migrants.

 274.
Leigh said the mayor is holding roundtables because he doesn’t know what else to do.

 275.
“You can’t get any money from the federal government. [Illinois Gov. J.B.] Pritzker is trying to save himself. You’re not gonna get anything from the county, so now it’s just trying to figure out, ‘What can we do?’” Leigh said.

 276.
More Chicago budget engagement events to discuss fiscal year 2026 spending plans are scheduled Monday and Tuesday of this week, followed by a fourth roundtable on July 9th. The next city budget begins Jan. 1, 2026.

 277.
The city’s budget engagement website includes the calendar of public events.

 313.
Combs’s defense told the jurors their client is “not a racketeer. He is not a conspirator to commit racketeering. He is none of these things. He is innocent. He sits there innocent. Return him to his family, who have been waiting for him.”
