Firefighters were battling a raging vegetation fire off Highway 166 east of Santa Maria that reportedly had charred 35,350 acres as of shortly before midnight Wednesday. The blaze burning mostly north of Highway 166 reportedly was exhibiting an average burn rate of 3,230 acres per hour, and was threatening the Carrizo Plains Ecological Reserve. Officials were reporting 0% containment for what has been dubbed the Madre Fire, which quickly became one of the largest conflagrations in the state in 2025.

The flames were being pushed by wind and topography, according to Capt. Scott Safechuck of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. Aerial mapping conducted late Wednesday night reportedly showed the Madre Fire burn area had jumped from 9,800 acres charred just hours before. The blaze broke out shortly after 1 p.m., when a caller reported a small fire starting along the fence line with authorities later identifying the scene as west of Rock Front Ranch. Crews from Cal Fire, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and the Los Padres National Forest were dispatched to the incident.

An initial size-up estimated the fire had burned 100 acres in grass, but was transitioning to heavier vegetation. As of 3:15 p.m., authorities closed Highway 166 lanes in the area of the fire, between Highway 101 in Santa Maria and Perkins Road in New Cuyama, according to Caltrans District 5.The National Weather Service said winds from the west were 5 to 8 mph with gusts up to 15 mph. With the temperature reaching 95 degrees, humidity was 20 percent.

Officials determined the fire is burning in federal jurisdiction mostly within San Luis Obispo County. The firefight is being managed under unified command by the U.S. Forest Service/Los Padres National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, and Cal Fire San Luis Obispo.

By Wednesday night, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation warning for east of the Rock Front Area, west of Cottonwood Canyon Road and south to Highway 166, emergency management officials said. Aircraft, planes and helicopters also responded to assist firefighters on the ground. More than an hour after crews began responding, incident commanders had ordered up to 10 tankers including the Very Large Air Tanker or VLAT.

With multiple aircraft using the Santa Maria Public Airport, residents heard sounds of tankers traveling from the airfield to the fire for several hours. Hand crews including from Vandenberg Space Force Base also were requested. As the fire grew, the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District and County of Santa Barbara Health Department issued an Air Quality Watch for Santa Barbara County to be in effect until conditions improve.

The Madre Fire burning along Highway 166 between Highway 101 and New Cuyama produced a significant amount of smoke. While ground-level conditions were good to moderate countywide, APCD representatives advised that the dynamic situation meant local air quality conditions could change quickly. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation. Firefighters requested closure of the roadway roughly 41 miles east of Highway 101.

The firefighter who was critically injured during an ambush attack in Coeur d’Alene is now in stable condition. The Coeur d’Alene Fire Department says Engineer David Tysdal’s condition has improved after a third successful surgery. CDAFD says Tysdal remains in the ICU and suffered severe chest trauma, but has been taken off a ventilator and is talking. The fire department says he also suffered spinal trauma. Doctors say they are optimistic about his recovery, but note he has a long road to recovery ahead.

At a press conference on Monday, officials said Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison were the two firefighters killed, and CDAFD Engineer Tysdal was taken to the hospital after being shot. Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief Tom Greif read a statement from Tysdal’s wife on Monday that reads as follows: “We thank everyone for their love and support. Dave is surrounded by his family, and he is able to open his eyes, and the two surgeries have gone well.”

Firefighters are battling a “fast moving” wildfire burning near Chelan, prompting Level 2 evacuation orders for nearby residents, according to the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office. The Apple Acres Fire is approximately 2,000 acres in size and quickly spreading through grass and sage brush. Level 2 (Get set) evacuation orders are in place as the fire is threatening homes and infrastructure in the area, according to the state. The Apple Acres Fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday between the city of Chelan and Alta Lake in Okanogan County.

Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste approved the use of state firefighting resources to assist Chelan Fire and Rescue crews on scene. Under Washington’s fire assistance plan, state resources are used to help notify, assemble and deploy fire service personnel, equipment and additional resources from around Washington when a fire exceeds the capacity of the local fire department. An emergency operations center at Camp Murray in Tacoma is monitoring the wildfire and coordinating state assistance. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

VIDEO: Seven people are unaccounted for after multiple explosions obliterated a fireworks facility Tuesday in the Esparto area of Yolo County, Cal Fire said Wednesday. The explosions and fire that followed caused nearby evacuations and power outages. It began with a call of a structure fire at 5:49 p.m. along County Road 23 and County Road 86A. As LiveCopter 3 was heading to the area, it could already see a massive plume of black smoke from miles away.

Flames forced the fireworks to ignite, leading to several explosions engulfing at least two homes and several vehicles on the property, also leading to nearby spot vegetation fires. Cal Fire said in a Wednesday news release that seven people “remain unaccounted for” and that first responders are working with the property owner to help find them.

On Wednesday evening, the company connected to the facility through public records, Devastating Pyrotechnics, updated its website, stating in part, “Our hearts and thoughts are with those we lost, their families, and everyone impacted in our community.” While officials have not yet released the identities of any of the unaccounted people, a woman identified one of them as her 18-year-old boyfriend Jesus Maneces Ramos. Syanna Ruiz said it was his first day working at the facility, and she is holding on to hope that he is OK.

As fire danger spikes ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is unleashing its secret weapon: highly trained K-9s that can sniff out the smallest traces of accelerants. The dogs are tasked to use their noses of justice to uncover the origin, cause and circumstances of fires and explosions in the state as part of Cal Fire’s Arson and Bomb Unit’s K-9 program.

Mocha, a 3-year-old chocolate Labrador, is part of the specially trained accelerant detection K-9 brigade. She works side by side with arson and bomb Investigator Charlie Elder to track down evidence and determine the cause of wildfires. “She makes the community safer,” Elder said, explaining that Mocha is capable of investigating the entire area of a fire scene and tracing more than 60 different odors, including charcoal, gasoline, diesel and mineral oil, that are commonly used in arson or suspicious fire.

“Their noses are very valuable. She’s been very accurate when there’s been ignitable liquids and where there’s not been any ignitable liquids,” said Elder. When she discovers a scent, Mocha alerts her partner by sitting or laying down and then is rewarded with her favorite tennis ball that she chews up. The K-9 program was developed to include not only ignitable liquid detection canines, but explosives and firearms detection dogs, further expanding the capabilities and meeting the needs of arson and bomb investigations.

A potential tropical disturbance headed towards the Southeastern United States is likely to bring heavy rains to the state over the Fourth of July weekend, according to the FOX 35 Storm Team and the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The NHC said in its latest update that a frontal boundary is expected to stall and weaken off the U.S. Gulf Coast this week.

An area of low pressure could then develop and potentially bring a subtropical or tropical disturbance, the NHC said. As of Thursday morning, the chances of development in the next seven days had increased to 60%, and the chances of development within the next 48 hours increased to 20%. The NHC has highlighted a region off the coast of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida for a medium chance of tropical development over at least the next week. Warm ocean water could help as temperatures are already near the mid-80s. There is also very low wind shear and the low presence of Saharan Dust, which tends to dry out the air.

Regardless of whether a tropical system forms or not, heavy rainfall is likely and will impact areas across Central Florida at all times of the day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. On Thursday, most areas will experience a 50% chance of rain. Rain chances increase across western parts of the peninsula. With plenty of tropical moisture in place, a lot of rain will fall over a short period of time.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Clinton and Ridgeland have new fire chiefs. Levius Buckley has replaced Jeff Blackledge as chief of the Clinton Fire Department. Blackledge retired after nine years leading the department and more than three decades as a firefighter. Buckley, who has 18 years with the department, was one of the first captains assigned to new Station 4 when it opened in 2018. He has served the past six years as the department’s training officer. Buckley was appointed chief Tuesday during a meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen. Also Tuesday, Clinton inaugurated Will Purdie as the city’s mayor, replacing Phil Fisher, who retired after decades of public service.

Jonathan Posey has been named as Ridgeland fire chief, succeeding Matt Bailey, who retired after 37 years of fire service. Posey has been with the department since 2015, serving as a firefighter, sergeant, lieutenant and training officer. Posey has also served in the Mississippi Army National Guard. “His years of hands-on experience and leadership have prepared him well for this next step,” Ridgeland officials said in a statement.

VIDEO: As the world watches in shock as firefighters in Idaho were brutally attacked and gunned down while on a call, Bend Fire and Rescue is prepared for situations like this with bulletproof safety vests. However, the fire department only uses these vests when they know they’re responding to a possibly hostile situation. The vests rarely see use because the fire department says nearly all its interactions with the public are positive.

Makayla Oliver, with Bend Fire and Rescue, told KTVZ news, “I think generally people are thankful when our responders show up on scene. They know we’re there to do our job one way or another. There are times when we’re trying to enforce a fire code that is not always welcome. However, we try to make sure they understand what the risks are and why we’re asking them to do that, and typically it ends on a positive note.”

Within city limits, Bend Fire also works closely with Bend Police. No matter what department people call, Bend Police will usually arrive first and make sure the scene is safe. At the end of the day, Bend Fire prioritizes the safety of its firefighters above all else.
