27.

Where does the Free Run 2 fit in my running? When I commenced minimalist running it was in the Adidas Adizero Adios & Ace (old model) with a little bit of Nike Lunar Racer thrown in for good measure. A bit further along I added the Nike Free 5.0 into the mix. So by the time the Free Run came along I was well entrenched in Free 5.0, Free 3.0 and marathon racing shoes. I did buy a pair, but I initially found them better for walking than for running so I’ve been wearing them around for about the past year or so – more on this later in the review. More recently the Free Run 2 arrived and I was keen to add it into my running repertoire, it was a bit better locked down that the previous version, making the forefoot area more stable. I had hoped to make this shoe a regular partner on my longer and easy runs. Slightly more support while maintaining good ground feel and the foot strengthening elements. But it didn’t quite turn out that way. I’ve run about eight or more times in the shoe now from distances of 10-12 km and for different types of running, speed work twice and a tempo session just the other day. The other runs have been easy jogs on the dirt, roads and also some moderately rocky trails. Good for faster running My initial reaction, and this is based around my recent running history and progression, is that the faster you run, the better these shoes feel. Even though they look a bit bulky, once you run a bit faster you don’t notice them. In terms of speed work I’ve worn them on two sessions of 4 sets of (200, 200, 400) in 37-40 and 77-81 seconds. The warm up jogs didn’t feel as great as the actual sessions, in which I found the Free Runs surprisingly fast and responsive. The tempo session was a short 3 by 4 minute efforts at about 3.55 kilometer pace. The rest of the easy runs were done at or slightly under 5 min km pace. So you could use these shoes for some of your faster running sessions, especially those completed away from the track.

 36.

RIO DE JANEIRO—There is at least one award in Olympic gymnastics that’s not made of gold, silver or bronze: Anyone who nails a move for the first time in the history of the sport will leave Rio with that maneuver named in his or her honor. One of the newest, officially sanctioned moves in gymnastics, for example, was approved by the International Gymnastics Federation last year as a “change-leg leap to free-cross split sit.” But it’s already known around the sport by the surname of its inventor—in part because that’s how she referred to the mount in an Instagram video. “Behold, ” she wrote. “The Dick.” Marisa Dick, a Canadian-born gymnast representing Trinidad and Tobago, may only have one day here to show off “The Dick.” She likely won’t make it out of Olympic qualifying Sunday, and Dick winning a single medal would be as stunning as three-time world champion Simone Biles not winning several. Dick finished 74th on the beam event at the most recent world championships, where she unveiled her eponymous move, and that meant she left the competition with a different prize: her name in the sport’s official Code of Points. “It’s one of those things, ” Dick said this week, “that lives on forever in the gymnastics world.” The only problem with The Dick is something few gymnasts encounter: It’s the rare technical element that makes fans bashful. Even a tongue-twister like “The Zamolodchikova” is easier to say in polite company. What should be one of the proudest moments of Dick’s gymnastics career instead makes people awkward. By now, Dick has heard all the jokes. “I’ve just made it so easy for everyone, ” she said. “Especially because it’s on the beam. And I land on the split.” Even the international governing body of gymnastics can get a little testy when it comes to The Dick. “We would like to underline that there are more spectacular new elements expected than her new move, ” an organization spokeswoman wrote in an email. “We guess last time it makes the buzz only because of her name.” There may be more buzz soon. While training for Rio, Dick made a tweak to her infamous mount, and immediately realized what it would mean if she landed this enhanced move at the Olympics. “Oh my goodness, ” she said. “I can get another one named after me!” She unveiled that technical element—a switch leap with a half-pirouette that lands in a split on the beam—during Olympic podium training Thursday night in near anonymity as the U.S. gymnasts practiced nearby. But it didn’t matter that most people missed it, because new moves can only be added into the sport’s Code of Points once they are performed in a sanctioned competition. And she already knows what she will call the sequel if she pulls it off in Olympic qualifying Sunday.

Next we try handstand kick-ups. We do a front support with our hands near the wall, bring one leg up so it’s bent under us, keep our back leg straight and bring it off the floor by just an inch. Then we try kicking our straight leg up to touch the wall. If this sounds easy, try it for yourself. Urban Movement is located in Houston, Texas and has constructed these obstacles made from Kee Klamp fittings. These obstacles provide a context for their indoor training. The folks at Urban Movement did an amazing job combining the fittings to create a truely unique structure. These parkour structures are made up of 5 primary fittings: The structure uses 1-1/2" Schedule 80 pipe with the size 8 version of each of the fittings listed above. Kee Klamp fittings and parkour obstacles are a great fit. They allow for the construction of diverse pipe based obstacles which are structurally sound and easy to construct. No welding is involved. A special set-screw mechanism allows the structure to be assembled with a simple Allen wrench. Urban Movement now joins other gyms such as Parkour Visions, Base Fitness, Rochester PK and Miami Freerunning, who have all constructed indoor obstacles using Kee Klamp fittings. If you need some assistance building a parkour obstacle with Kee Klamp, tap into our free design assistance.
