3 Non-QB Storylines to Watch in BYU Camp

Let’s talk about something other than the quarterbacks at BYU. What are other things to watch for the Cougars as fall camp nears?

BYU begins fall camp in just a few short weeks, and football season will be here before we know it.

The Cougars have had a turbulent offseason, mostly centered around the quarterback situation. However, let’s take a break from that and focus on other valuable parts of Kalani Sitake’s football team.

Here are three other storylines to follow as BYU heads into fall camp very soon.

Is there a next step for RB LJ Martin?

Is the breakout season for LJ Martin finally here? After rushing for just over 500 yards as a true freshman in 2023, he reached 718 yards and seven touchdowns in 10 games last year. Still, it felt like he could have had a much better season if he hadn’t missed basically three full games. Health has been a big reason why Martin hasn’t yet hit that next gear.

Now fully healthy and a year wiser, 2025 might be the Year of LJ. BYU hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since Tyler Allgeier’s record-breaking 2021 campaign. This could finally be the season a Cougar back reaches that benchmark again.

Yes, there is some turnover ahead of him on the offensive line (more on that in a moment). But that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The Cougars ranked ninth in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game last year. There is plenty of room for improvement.

Martin ended BYU’s stellar 2024 campaign on a high note, rushing for 88 yards and two touchdowns against Colorado in the Alamo Bowl.

Martin came out of high school in Texas as an all-state running back who turned down other Big 12 programs to come to BYU. Given the uncertainty surrounding Martin on offense, offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick could lean heavily on Martin and the running game. That means more carries and more yards for number 27. This is his big opportunity.

Can the offensive line survive or even thrive after all the turnover?

Last season, the Cougars enjoyed a solid offensive line led by veterans like Connor Pay, Brayden Keim, and Caleb Etienne. This season, they will replace all three starters. Even with the turnover, there is a path for the Cougars to replicate last year’s success or even build on it.

First, the biggest change is the arrival of former highly touted recruit Andrew Gentry, who transferred from Michigan. Out of high school, Gentry was a four-star, top-150 prospect. He will likely take over at right tackle for the departed Keim. With coaching from TJ Woods and possibly two seasons in Provo, Gentry has a chance to become a rock-solid part of this offensive line.

Bruce Mitchell will likely take over full-time for Pay at center, where he played when Pay went down with a midseason injury. He performed admirably when pressed into duty unexpectedly.

Left guard Weylin Lapuaho is the lone lineman who started all last year and is returning. Kyle Sfarcioc transferred in from Southern Utah and has a shot to win the other guard spot from incumbent Austin Leausa.

At left tackle, a transfer from a Big 12 school (Colorado) will take over for the departed Etienne, who transferred from Oklahoma State. Isaiah Jatta logged 144 snaps at right tackle last season with positive results. He now swings over to the left side and is the projected starter. He has the body type and athleticism to be the next great left tackle at BYU.

Who steps up in the defensive secondary?

Aside from the offensive line and quarterback, no BYU group has seen more turnover than the defensive backs. Cornerback Jakob Robinson signed an undrafted free agent deal with the San Francisco 49ers after four stellar years at BYU.

Marque Collins also left to pursue a professional career but has yet to find an NFL home.

Basically, BYU is replacing their top two cornerbacks from last year. However, Evan Johnson returns after getting some spot starts last year. In some respects, Johnson was BYU’s highest-graded cornerback. He logged two interceptions, and his 78.1 coverage grade per Pro Football Focus was the best of any BYU defensive back.

Johnson may now be the top corner.

Mory Bamba got an NCAA waiver to return to BYU and should start opposite Johnson.

Georgia native Therrian Alexander III has track-star speed and should be featured in some way in Jay Hill’s secondary.

At safety, Tanner Wall is the staple. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions last season. He will lock down center field as BYU’s main free safety once again. Crew Wakely transferred out, leaving a hole at strong safety. Raider Damuni should step right into that role after recording 276 defensive snaps last season.

Faletau Satuala and Tommy Prassas round out the depth at safety.

In all likelihood, Jay Hill’s defense will be solid once again. It’s just a matter of new starters like Bamba or Damuni, or incumbent Johnson at corner, taking the next step into stardom.

Update on BYU Basketball 2026 Recruiting as Live Periods Come to a Close

Summer AAU circuits are coming to an end this week with Nike’s Peach Jam — one of the top events of the college hoops recruiting calendar — takes place this week in North Augusta, South Carolina. Kevin Young and BYU assistants are in attendance, watching 2026 targets and getting a better feel for the 2027 and 2028 classes. Peach Jam should largely solidify BYU’s 2026 recruiting board as coaches narrow down the targets they really want to hone in on these next few months.

The 2025 class was absolutely loaded at the top with potential NBA Stars — AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cam Boozer, Mikel Brown, and Nate Ament all have high NBA upside and each one would have been the top player in the 2026 class. The 2026 class is widely considered to be a weak class at the top according to most NBA scouts and college coaches. There will be high impact players this class and many multi-year guys, but coaches may be looking more to the transfer portal next season to try to fill in the top players in the class.

With that said, I could see BYU honing in on guys that are multi-year players — who are certainly still talented — but relying more on the transfer portal to try to replace top contributors such as AJ Dybantsa, Richie Saunders, and Keba Keita.

Below are some of the 2026 guys I am tracking. This is not an exhaustive list.

Dean Rueckert — 4-Star Wing

Rueckert has been on BYU’s radar for years. The Timpview HS product comes from a BYU family and has built a great relationship with Kevin Young. BYU made Dean’s top 5 last month along with Utah, Stanford, Clemson, and Washington. He initially had set up his official visit for the weekend of September 6, but his dad told me he bumped that up to July 28-29.

The timing of the visit is notable. July 1-27 is a recruiting dead period, meaning no in-person contact between coaches and players can happen with the exception of the sanctioned evaluation periods (such as Peach Jam). Another dead period runs August 4-20, so Dean was intentional on setting his BYU official visit as soon as the dead period ends and get it in before the August 4 one begins.

I have BYU as the favorite for Dean, and the official visit later this month could make things official. Dean has been undecided on his mission plans.

Austin Goosby — 4-Star Guard

Like Rueckert, Goosby also set his BYU official visit last month. He set the visit for September 26-28. Most services have Goosby ranked slightly higher than Dean. Goosby is a top 40 recruit according to 247 while Dean is rated 63rd overall by 247 composite. Austin is LDS has family on his mom’s side that live in Utah and cousins that attend BYU.

Austin and his family have been super impressed with Kevin Young, but this one is gonna be a tough battle. Austin’s brother is an offensive lineman at Texas and the family is a Longhorn family. Duke has also recently got involved, and they are a real threat in his recruitment too. BYU coaches have been recruiting Austin hard, and he would be a big addition if the Cougs can land him.

Anthony Felesi — 4-Star Wing

Felesi is entering his second year at Utah Prep. A top 50 player in the 2026 class, Felesi is very familiar with BYU’s staff and program. Prior to Utah Prep, Felesi attended Orem HS. Felesi took an unofficial visit to BYU in March with Utah Prep teammate AJ Dybantsa during the West Virginia hoops game, and I talked to him after that about his experience. Anthony told me that his Utah Prep teammates AJ Dybantsa and Xavion Staton were in his ear non-stop about coming to BYU.

Anthony is planning to take an official visit to BYU. He told me last month he will take an official to BYU, he just hasn’t finalized dates for his visits yet. He took an unofficial visit to Houston, and the Coogs are a school to watch. UCLA, Louisville, Oregon, Villanova, and several other schools have also offered. Anthony is a physical wing/guard who can really defend and knockdown shots. It’s no surprise Houston is pursuing Anthony — he fits the mold as a physical guard who can also score on the offensive end.

Jalen Montonati — 5-Star Forward

Rated a 5-star recruit by 247’s composite rankings, BYU hasn’t been on Jalen quite as long as the aforementioned players on the list. Jalen preps in Oklahoma and is the son of former Oklahoma State basketball player Brian Montonati. BYU offered Jalen in May and he immediately became one of BYU’s top targets. A 6-foot-7 forward, Jalen’s strength is his ability to stretch the floor and hit shots. Jalen is different than other guys on this list in that his clear strength is moving without the ball and knocking down shots. He’s not a huge threat to blow by guys off the dribble and is a little bit in between a 3 and 4 defensively, but he’s a committed defender. He hasn’t announced a visit date with BYU, but BYU has been on him hard and I expect he will find his way to Provo for an official visit.

Anthony Thompson — 5-Star Forward

A top 10 player in the class, Thompson is a 6-foot-8 lefty with high-end shot-making ability. He has a 7-foot-2 wingspan that gives him a high release that is nearly unblockable. Thompson has star potential with his ability to score the ball off the dribble.

BYU made his top 15 in April, but his recruiting has been largely quiet. BYU had coaches in South Carolina last weekend watching him, and Kevin Young has been in consistent communication with him. Anthony has said he may take upwards of 8-10 visits, and BYU has a chance to be one of those. It’s too early for me to say who a favorite is, but Anthony could be a building block for BYU as a lead scorer if he were to come to Provo.

KJ Perry — JUCO PG

Perry is arguably the top JUCO prospect in the 2026 class. His recruitment took off last week after a huge performance at the JA48 in Richmond, VA and he’s seen offers poor in since. KJ tweeted about his BYU offer Thursday, and also has offers from TCU, NC State, SMU, Cal, and several others. Perry is a 6-foot-3 point guard who can really score the ball and create off the dribble. BYU has not really dabbled in the JUCO ranks since Kevin Young became coach, so this offer shows BYU thinks highly of KJ as a player. BYU has offered 5-star point guards Brandon McCoy and Derron Rippey Jr, but Perry’s recent offer suggests BYU is not in deep on those guys.

Junior County — 4-Star Guard

Junior plays at Wasatch Academy and for Utah Prospects AAU Team. He is a top 50 player in the 2026 class and is being pursued by schools such as UConn, Houston, and Purdue. One source close to Junior told me in June that Junior isn’t very interested in BYU. At this point I expect him to go out of state and BYU to put more of their focus on other guards/wings.

Arafan Diane — 4-Star Center

This big man class isn’t as strong as others, but Diane is arguably the best big in the 2026 class. The 7-foot-1 Center originally from West Africa is fairly new to the game of basketball but has advanced offensive skill considering how new to the game he is. He is very active on the boards and has the ability to score with his back to the basket. BYU offered Diane a month ago and it’s early to say how involved BYU will actually be, but this will be worth monitoring if BYU can get an official visit.

Jamyn Sondrup — 4-Star Center

BYU offered the 6-foot-10 big man from Springville, Utah last summer. Things can always change, but I get the sense that BYU won’t pursue Sondrup too hard. He’s taken visits to Purdue and Washington, and I’m told those are two schools to watch.

BYU added a familiar last name to its strong 2026 class as 3-star linebacker Adam Bywater announced his commitment to BYU. Adam is the younger brother of former BYU linebacker Ben Bywater, who was a member of BYU’s football team for six seasons from 2019-2024.

Adam also had offers from Utah, Boise State, Arizona State, San Diego State, Harvard, and others. 247 Sports rates him as the #20 prospect in the state of Utah.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, Bywater is a versatile linebacker who has played multiple positions in his high school career. Below is a recent scouting report from 247 Sports national analyst Greg Biggins.

“Bywater is one of the most versatile linebackers in the region. Played a lot of safety early on in high school but projects as an ideal outside linebacker at the college level. At 6-foot-4, 210 pounds, has a big frame with plenty of length and shows some natural cover skills. Was a standout at the Under Armour Next Camp in Utah back in Maui where he looked very comfortable in space and was among the better cover ‘backers in the camp. He’s a very good open field tackler as well and has the toughness and physicality you have to have to excel playing in the front seven in college. When you combine his frame, natural athleticism and versatility, we think Bywater has the upside to be a multi-year starter at the Power 4 level.”

Bywater is the 22nd commitment of BYU’s touted 2026 class, which currently ranks top 25 nationally according to 247 Sports.

Tanner chose BYU over offers from Oregon, Tennessee, Michigan, USC, Penn State, Auburn, Washington, Wisconsin, Stanford, North Carolina, Nebraksa, Purdue, Michigan, State, Cal, and several others. Tanner took official visits to Oregon, Tennessee, and Michigan and chose BYU despite high interest from some of the top programs in the country.

Jax has strong family ties to BYU. His father, Mike Tanner, played at BYU from 2000-2003. His brother, Gage, committed to BYU in the 2023 class and is expected to join the program this fall following his mission.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, Tanner projects as an interior offensive lineman. With his size, physicality, and ability to move well at this size, Tanner projects as a multi-year starter at BYU and has the talent to be an All-Big 12 lineman in his career. BYU has been adding the 4-star offensive linemen the last couple classes, and Tanner joins Lone Peak’s Bott Mulitalo as the second 4-star OL in the 2026 class.

Tanner has said he plans to serve a mission after finishing high school, meaning he is expected to join the program in 2028.

BYU will play North Carolina in an exhibition game at the Delta Center this October, as I reported back in May.

This is is the second of BYU’s two exhibitions. The first is Saturday, October 18 at Nebraska. The NCAA passed a new rule that allows teams to play two D1 teams in televised exhibitions fans can attend. Previously teams had to 1) make these D1 scrimmages “secret”, i.e., no stats released or media/fan attendance, 2) play scrimmages versus non-D1 teams, or 3) make the D1 scrimmages “charity exhibitions” if fans wanted to attend. Now teams can have fans attend these exhibitions and use the revenue however they want.

These exhibition games are essentially preseason games and do not count towards the regular season record. With the new rule in place, teams have been scheduling high-profile exhibition games. For example, Purdue and Kentucky will play each other this October.

Details from the game contract

I filed an open records request with the University of North Carolina and received the contract for the game.

The game will be Friday, October 24 at the Delta Center at 7:00 MT. BYU is tagged as the home team and North Carolina the away team. BYU will provide UNC 50 complimentary tickets located in the lower bowl behind the visiting team bench. UNC will receive a $500,000 guaranteed payment for the game — “GUARANTEED PAYMENTS: $500,000 - to be paid 30 days after the contest. The visiting team will advise Brigham Young University on payment details.” UNC is the visiting team in this case.

BYU will keep the revenue since they are the home team — “All television rights, fees and revenues are property of the home institution.”

In case of a cancellation, the defaulting party must pay $300,000 as part of a buyout. UNC must pay for their own travel expenses, and BYU will assign the officials for the game.

This will be the final game before BYU’s regular season opener versus Villanova November 3 in Las Vegas.

BYU added a big piece to its 2026 class as 3-star cornerback Jaxson Gates announced his commitment to BYU. Gates had been committed to Syracuse from November through June, but committed to BYU after taking an official visit to the school last month.

The Southern California native also had offers from Michigan State, Utah, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Mississippi State, Oregon State, and several others. He had taken official visits to Utah, Michigan State, and Syracuse in the last month.

Listed at 6-foot-1, Gates is a big-time commit for BYU’s defense. Cornerback has historically been the toughest position to recruit for BYU, and BYU was able to land a high 3-star with multiple competing P4 offers. 247 Sports rates Gates at the #49 CB in the 2026 class.

Gates also brings a strong track background to BYU. He ran a 10.72 100-meter dash back in March, and that speed translates on the football field. Gates ended his junior year with 30 tackles and 6 passes defended.

UteZone’s Dan Sorensen had this scouting report of Gates on May 31:

“When watching film, it’s clear that even with an 88 rating, Gates may be underrated based on his skill set. Gates plays exclusively on the boundary and is incredibly adept at press coverage. He has fluid hips and is able to change direction with ease. His elite speed is apparent as he uses it to keep pace or make up ground with receivers on the regular. He is aggressive in pass coverage and attacks the ball when it’s in the air. He has elite cover skills and is able to lock down receivers without excessive grabbing or reaching. He is a solid tackler and isn’t afraid to stick his nose into the action to take down a ball carrier. On film, Gates has everything the Utes are looking for in a corner.”

Gates is the highest rated defense back in BYU’s 2026 class and will have a great chance to see playing time early in his BYU career.

BYU landed its second commitment of the day as 3-star 2026 defensive lineman Nehemiah Kolone announced his commitment to BYU.

The Stillwater, Oklahoma product chose BYU over offers from Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Baylor, Arizona, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, and others. Kolone visited BYU the weekend of June 20 and had a final three of BYU, Oklahoma State, and Michigan State.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, Kolone could play either defensive end or defensive tackle depending on how his frame fills out. He’s been productive his last two seasons of high school ball, racking up 99 tackles and 14 TFLs across two seasons. Kolone also participates in shot put. He is the 18th commit for BYU in the 2026 class and joins Lopeti Moala and PJ Takitaki as the third defensive line commit in this class. Takitaki is an edge while Moala and Kolone could play either inside or outside.

BYU continues to add to its impressive 2026 class as 4-star linebacker Braxton Lindsey announced his commitment to BYU Monday. Lindsey is rated a 4-star prospect by ESPN and high 3-star prospect by 247 Sports.

After a brief pump-fake towards Oklahoma, four-star Rogers linebacker Braxton Lindsey commits to BYU. pic.twitter.com/Ae05tRs46z
— Michael Main (@MichaelMain__) July 7, 2025

A top 10 prospect in the state of Arkansas, Lindsey chose BYU over offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Miami, Baylor, Utah, Oklahoma State, Stanford, TCU, Wisconsin, Purdue, SMU, Michigan State, and several others. Lindsey has Oklahoma, Mizzou, and Arkansas as other finalists, but BYU closed strong and was able to get the talented pass rusher.

Lindsey is two-way standout on offense as an outside linebacker and pass catcher, As a junior, Lindsey tallied 28 tackles, 9 sacks, 10 quarterback pressures, and 2 forced fumbles in limited defensive snaps. Offensively, he also posted 62 receptions for 1,139 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Due to his size, Lindsey could seemingly play outside or inside linebacker and has the ability to rush the passer. Lindsey’s receiving background should help his cover skills at the college level. He has the makings of a multi-year starter in BYU’s linebacker room and a disruptive piece in BYU’s front seven.

You can watch highlights of Lindsey below.
