When the days are long and cold, I find projects to work on inside the house. I bake, make soap (of course!), crochet, read, or work on other craft projects. For the past few weeks I’ve been making jewelry from polymer clay. Ingredients 2 cups corn starch 2 cups baking soda 1¼ cups cold water food coloring if desired Directions Mix all of the ingredients in a saucepan and stir while heating over medium heat. It will start to thicken, much like mashed potatoes. Take it off of the heat and let it cool. At this point, you can pinch off pieces and color with food coloring (or wait and paint them later in the process). Using gloves will protect your hands from the food coloring and will also cut down on fingerprints. Form pieces into desired shapes. Bake at 250°F for 15-20 minutes. (You do need to bake this as it won’t harden as well as the salt dough.) If painting your pieces, wait until pieces are completely cooled to paint. This dough and the one above can be made in a large batch ahead of time and can be frozen in a zip top bag. Be aware that when you take it out, it may develop moisture on the outside and should be dried a bit before using. It will probably be hard and possibly crumbly, but working it and kneading it more will help. If it is very sticky, roll it out onto a floured board and work a bit more flour into it. For short periods of time, you can place it in a zip top bag and leave it on the counter. Homemade Polymer Clay Ideas Any type of paint can be used to color the finished pieces. Be sure to paint after baking as some oil based paints could be flammable. Coat with a sealer such as varnish or paste wax. Buff after the wax. If you do get unsightly fingerprints on the piece, you can sand the oven dried piece with an emery board. Use a light touch and then finish with a fine grain sandpaper, like a wet/dry type. I’ve made some cool pieces by adding colored mica or glitter. It just needs to be worked into the clay before baking. You can embellish with chatons or foil-backed rhinestones. Place the rhinestone on the top and then push it into the clay. Then pull the rhinestone out, add a dab of glue, and place the rhinestone back into the hole. You can bake most stones and they will be fine. Crystals and stones will not melt and they rarely ever crack at the low temperatures required for this clay. Don’t want to make jewelry? Try some mushrooms or birds for the flower garden or embellish a box. Add clay to a mint tin to make a one-of-a-kind treasure box. Have you made clay for jewelry? Let us know how it worked out! ******* PAID ENDORSEMENT DISCLOSURE: In order for us to support our website activities, we may receive monetary compensation or other types of remuneration for our endorsement, recommendation, testimonial and/or link to any products or services from this website.

Today I’m excited to share with you a bead crochet project from my friends Bert and Dana Freed, the mother-and-daughter creative team behind The Well Done Experience. Together they design and create beautiful jewelry, sell finished pieces, patterns and kits, teach classes throughout NYC, and authored the book, An Inspired Journey Through 27 Designs . Their necklaces and bracelets — bold strands of colorful, textured beads — are truly wearable art. I’ve never seen these two out in the world without rocking their jewelry, which I am always in awe of. Even on Dana’s wedding day, she made a special piece just for the occasion. In this how-to, Dana walks us through the steps of creating one of her Chain Stitched Necklaces. The necklace is versatile and can be worn a few different ways — loosely draped or wrapped a few times. It’s a quick project, a great introduction to bead crochet, and would make an elegant handmade gift. We’re lucky today, too, because Bert and Dana are giving one reader a chance to win a copy of their book, , and one of their Chain Stitched Necklace Kits . Bert and Dana believe, “The process of making something is as valuable as the finished project.” For a chance to win, just leave a comment by Sunday, January 10th, sharing an experience of making something you truly enjoyed. —Jessica Materials – C-Lon Fine Weight Bead Cord – 110 3×4 Thunder Polish Crystals – 100 3×5 Side Drilled Pearls – #2, #3, or #4 steel crochet hook – Scissors Instructions 1. String the beads. Thread all your beads on to the uncut spool of C-Lon thread. Cut the tip of the thread at an angle to easily thread the beads. (Cut as needed, if the thread weakens or frays.) Set aside ten crystals for finishing. Note: We used a pattern of one crystal, one pearl but you can get creative here and make your own pattern. 2. Make a slipknot with a 6” tail. To make a slipknot, form a circular loop with the thread, almost like you’re tying a knot. Instead of pulling the thread fully through the loop, like you’d do with a traditional knot, pull a small loop through. Tug on both ends of the loop (the top and the bottom threads tails) to form a knot under a loop. Insert the crochet hook into the loop and pull threads to secure. 3. Chain stitch the necklace. Slide one bead down to the hook. Hold the crochet hook in your right hand and the thread in your left. Using the crochet hook, wrap the thread around the hook and pull the thread through the slipknot. This is a chain stitch with a bead. The pattern is: one chain stitch with a bead, one chain stitch without a bead. The detail images below illustrate the steps of crocheting this necklace. Top row, holding the thread and hook. Second row, chain stitching the pearl. Third row, chain stitch without a bead. Third row, chain stitch with a crystal bead. Repeat until all the beads have been crocheted. Tip: If you’re finding the tension is too tight, Dana suggests you give the chain a good pull every few inches. The thread is tough and this will help tight stitches relax, lay flat and create a more uniform tension. 4. Finishing your necklace. Once all the beads have been crocheted, cut a 6” tail. Remove your hook from the chain, thread the tail end of the thread through the last loop and pull to secure. Tie the necklace ends together with three knots. String each thread tail with five beads, tie a knot at the base of each to secure and snip the tail ends.

Snake Chain and Omega Chain are similar types of jewelry chain that aren’t really chain at all. The core of an omega chain is either a long wire or a woven mesh. Then the chain creator takes small metal plates or disks and attaches them to the core. Sometimes jewelers and jewelry stores use "snake chain" and "omega chain" for the same jewelry chain. When first researching snake and omega chain, the difference seemed to be that snake chain is round, and omega chain is flat...

Once upon a time, it was considered insane to compete against eBay. If you sold custom-made goods like clothes or jewelry, you sold at flea markets on weekends, and eBay the rest of the time. The idea that anyone would shop anywhere else for your handmade merchandise was silly. But anyone who’s shopped on eBay knows how tough it can be to find certain goods. A search for “vintage t-shirt” may turn up more than 300, 000 results, very few of which are either vintage or t-shirts. As a merchant, sellers find themselves competing with a huge number of competitors, ranging from junk resellers to mass producers peddling knockoffs...

There are pieces of jewelry that come and go based on current trends, then there are those that last a lifetime and longer. The spoon ring is an excellent example of a timeless classic. Some think that the rings origins date back to the 1600s. That’s what I call time-honored style! This tutorial will teach you how to make a spoon ring. Maybe you’ll give them to your friends, or maybe you’ll end up making your very own family heirloom that your great grandchildren will inherit. I’ll admit that the first time I tried this I thought it’d be a no-brainer. Oh sure, maybe I can use a stainless steel fork from the thrift store. Let me tell you — I didn’t think that one all the way through. There is a reason why these are made of sterling! When you do go searching for your material, you’ll want make sure it’s sterling by checking the stamping on the back. It should either say .925 or sterling. If you’re hitting up you local antique stores look for one that is a little on the thin side. If you get one that’s beautiful but thick, it’ll make things a lot harder to bend. If, on the other hand you inherited something, keep that tip in mind. Hollowware might be impossible but a thick piece could be doable. It’s a good thing sterling will soften as you anneal! Tools you’ll need: Spoon or fork Jewelers saw or other cutting tool File Ring mandrel Nylon or rawhide mallet Torch Pickle pot Ring bending pliers Strip of thick leather Step 1: Get a general idea of the overall length that your ring will need to be. Take into account the fact there will be some overlap so this measurement doesn’t need to be super precise. Just take a look at where you’d want things to be when complete. Step 2: Mark that length on your utensil. Step 3: Using your jeweler’s saw, cut right through that mark you just made. Step 4: File the edges of the piece you just cut so you have nice rounded edges. Of course, as always, this is based on the design I’m making. Feel free to get creative here and make this your own style. Step 5: Anneal your piece and then pickle it. Don’t skip this step! As you can see, I started working with my metal before this step and it was nearly impossible to move. Step 6: Begin to form the metal around your mandrel using your nylon hammer. I prefer to start about 2 sizes smaller than my piece will be, typically when the two ends come together it’ll be pretty close to the size you had intended. The spoon ring can be hit or miss so your might need to experiment. I’d rather give it a little stretch that a squeeze, but that’s just my hands talking. Step 7: Flip the metal and begin forming from the other side as well. You should start to get some good movement here. Step 8: If you can’t quite get the sides to match each other feel free to use your ring bending pliers to help you close the gap. I like to use a thick piece of leather between the jaws and my piece so as not to leave mark on the metal. Step 9: If, for your finished design you want your pieces to lay side by side, you might need to get creative with your forming. I grasped mine with my ring-bending pliers and, while pressing the overlapping piece against my workbench, was able to move the pieces so they laid side by side. It’s your piece though and you might be perfectly happy with the piece sticking above a bit. Step 10: Finish rounding your ring on your mandrel. Step 11: Make any last minute tweaks with your ring-bending pliers for sizing and your shaping is done! Step 12: Polish with a polishing cloth or a buffing wheel if your studio has one! Congratulations! You’ve just made your own family heirloom! Maybe it’s not for family, maybe it’s a silverware set that you and your friends pick out. Get creative, I know you can come up with all kinds of great things! Imagine a statement-making piece that shows off your style! Create your own custom jewelry with pearl knotting, chain making and photo etching with a front-row seat to expert instruction from Max Goodman in Craftsy’s Jewelry Workshop class. What else could you use to make a ring like this?
