  54. <blockquote><p>Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Stephen Miran, President Trump’s appointee to the Fed’s Board of Governors who is on a temporary leave from his job leading the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers, this week struck a downbeat tone about the health of the world’s largest economy. Mr. Bessent went so far as to say some sectors were already contracting. He did not specify which sectors, but high mortgage rates have put housing and adjacent industries such as construction under pressure.</p>
  55. <p>“I think that there are sectors of the economy that are in recession,” Mr. Bessent said on CNN on Sunday. He described the economy as being in a “period of transition” because of a pullback in government spending to reduce the deficit. He called on the Fed to support the economy by cutting interest rates.</p></blockquote>
  56. <p>Bessent’s job is to put a positive spin on America’s economic performance.</p>
  57. <p>But now we have reached a stage where even he cannot deny the truth.</p>
  58. <p>Just look at what is happening to the shipping industry.</p>
  59. <p>When the economy is booming, the amount of stuff that is being physically moved around goes up.</p>
  60. <p>But when the economy falls on hard times, the amount of stuff that is being physically moved around <a title="goes down" href="https://www.freightwaves.com/news/is-the-goods-economy-in-a-recession-freight-data-suggests-so" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">goes down</a>…</p>
  61. <blockquote><p>As someone who’s spent decades immersed in the freight and logistics industry, I’ve learned that freight data often tells the story of the broader economy long before traditional indicators catch up. Right now, that data is painting a stark picture: The U.S. economy is entrenched in a goods recession. While consumer spending on services might be holding steady, the movement of physical goods—the lifeblood of manufacturing, retail, and industrial sectors—has ground to a halt. This isn’t speculation; it’s evident in the high-frequency data we track at FreightWaves through our SONAR platform.</p></blockquote>
  62. <p>Nobody can pretend that this isn’t happening.</p>
  63. <p>I realize that some of you may not want to hear this, but long-haul trucking volumes <a title="are down 30 percent" href="https://www.freightwaves.com/news/is-the-goods-economy-in-a-recession-freight-data-suggests-so" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">are down 30 percent</a> on a year over year basis…</p>
  64. <blockquote><p>The long-haul trucking segment (800+ miles), however, has fallen off a cliff. Year-over-year volumes are down a shocking 30%, a sign that the broader economy is in trouble. Long-haul trucking is more exposed to the energy, manufacturing, auto, and housing segments.</p></blockquote>
  65. <p>That isn’t a small shift.</p>
  66. <p>That is a monumental collapse.</p>
  67. <p>When Freight Waves stated that long-haul trucking “has fallen off a cliff”, they were not exaggerating.</p>
  68. <p>Manufacturing activity is down too.</p>
  69. <p>In fact, it just declined <a title="for the eighth month in a row" href="https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/international-news/north_america/americas-current-economy/us-manufacturing-declines-for-eight-consecutive-month/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">for the eighth month in a row</a>…</p>
  70. <blockquote><p>US manufacturing turned down in October on the PMI index, dropping from 49.1 in September to 48.7 in October, marking the eighth consecutive month of contraction. Price pressure may have eased (58 from 61.9), but production (48.2 from 51), inventory (45.8 from 47.7), and deliveries (54.2 from 52.6) have all declined.</p>
  71. <p>Employment in the sector continued to decline (46 from 45.3), and 67% of panelist noted that companies are working on managing their current workforce rather than hiring. Again, lower rates are unlikely to address this structural problem or encourage companies to expand during a contracting business environment. Eight consecutive months of decline should be a warning as manufacturing declines often precede recessions, or in this case, ongoing stagflation.</p></blockquote>
  72. <p>Since less stuff is being produced, it should be no surprise that cardboard box shipments have fallen to <a title="“their lowest levels since the third quarter of 2015”" href="https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/sliding-cardboard-box-sales-sets-economic-alarm-bells-ahead-holiday-shopping-season" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">“their lowest levels since the third quarter of 2015”</a>…</p>
  73. <blockquote><p>Nearly every physical good in the modern economy is transported or stored in a corrugated cardboard box. That’s why box shipments act as a reliable real-time economic barometer, especially very useful now, as the government shutdown enters day 33 and key agencies like the BLS have halted official economic data releases, leaving private high-frequency data sets to fill the void.</p>
  74. <p>The latest box shipment data from Bloomberg, citing a report by the Fibre Box Association, shows some of the weakest volumes in years, reflecting waning consumer sentiment and potentially signaling a subdued holiday shopping season. These shipments were at their lowest levels since the third quarter of 2015.</p></blockquote>
  75. <p>This is the real economy.</p>
  76. <p>Factories make things and those things are put in cardboard boxes and shipped around the country in trucks.</p>
  77. <p>At every point along our supply chains, activity is slowing down.</p>
  78. <p>So let’s stop pretending.</p>
  79. <p>All over the United States, major employers <a title="have been slashing their workforces" href="https://archive.ph/I1xtL#selection-1591.0-1591.223" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">have been slashing their workforces</a>…</p>
  80. <blockquote><p>When Starbucks Corp. fired 900 corporate employees in September, economists hardly batted an eye. After all, the coffee chain had already done a February culling as part of new management’s drive to get the Frappuccino maker back on track. In October, Target Corp. eliminated 1,800 roles to help the beleaguered retailer move faster. For each corporate cutback, there’s been a clear explanation: Amazon.com (14,000 corporate jobs) blamed artificial intelligence; Paramount (1,000 workers) just completed a merger; Molson Coors (400 jobs) can’t get carb-conscious consumers to drink enough beer.</p>
  81. <p>Separately, each announcement can be read as a one-off. Yet taken together, some economists worry that the recent spate of cuts is starting to look a little less like individual belt-tightening and more like a warning sign.</p></blockquote>
  82. <p>Layoffs were up in 2024, and now they are up again in 2025.</p>
  83. <p>Because most Americans are just barely scraping by from month to month, many of those that are losing their jobs are at risk of losing everything.</p>
  84. <p>In this very difficult economic environment, it should be no surprise that vehicle repossessions are expected to hit a level that we haven’t seen <a title="since the Great Recession" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/11/05/on-the-frontline-of-americas-car-repossession-boom/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">since the Great Recession</a>…</p>
  85. <blockquote><p>Car repossessions are booming as Americans increasingly struggle to pay.</p>
  86. <p>The number of seized cars hit a 14-year high of 2.7 million in 2024, according to data from the Recovery Database Network (RDN), which processes around 90pc of all requests from lenders for repossessions.</p>
  87. <p>Kevin Armstrong, editor of CU Repossession, an industry publication, expects the total will hit three million this year based on current trends, only just shy of the 3.2 million peak seen in 2009.</p></blockquote>
  88. <p>Things are bad, and <a title="57 percent" href="https://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/57-percent-of-americans-expect-the-economy-to-get-even-worse-than-it-is-right-now/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">57 percent</a> of Americans expect economic conditions to get even worse next year.</p>
  89. <p>Unfortunately, I think that most Americans are still <a title="way too optimistic" href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F4DN45KX" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">way too optimistic</a> about what is ahead.</p>
  90. <p>There is no “quick fix” that is going to turn things around, because our system is fundamentally broken.</p>
  91. <p>We consume far more than we produce, a very large percentage of the population has become dependent on the government, and no nation in the entire history of the planet has accumulated as much debt as we have.</p>
  92. <p>We are in far more trouble than most people realize, and the road ahead is not going to be pleasant.</p>

  129. <p>The West is said to be considering orchestrating an accident at the Zaporozhye NPP, Europe’s largest nuclear power facility, that would lead to a meltdown of the reactor core, <a href="https://www.rt.com/russia/627411-nato-sabotage-nuclear-plant-kiev/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a report by <em>RT.</em></a> The SVR stated that British NGO Chatham House has already calculated the consequences of such an accident and determined that residents of Kiev-controlled territories and European Union countries near the Ukrainian western border would be in the area of radioactive particle dispersion.</p>
  130. <p>According to the SVR, the British think tank has said there could be trouble ensuring that the blame for the sabotage is connected to Russia. It noted that “the most challenging aspect of implementing such a plot is determining how to attribute responsibility for the catastrophe to Russia.”</p>
  131. <p>One of the proposals allegedly put forward by Kiev’s foreign backers as the “most effective” is to commit a “major act of sabotage” that will result in significant civilian casualties, the SVR said.</p>

  305. <p>To the Democratic Socialists of America and their fellow travelers, The Moment has arrived. With the victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York City’s mayoral election Tuesday night, the DSA has another attractive face to add to its advocates nationwide, someone to complement Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders as socialism marches to its inevitable triumph over the entire United States.</p>
  306. <p>As one who believed that the U.S. was on its way to a real revolution of free markets and personal freedom with the election of Ronald Reagan to the U.S. Presidency in 1980, and later his sweeping re-election in 1984, I realize that the DSA supporters who presently are giddy and ready to roll will experience the inevitable disappointment just as the free market supporters of Reagan did 40 years ago. However, before that moment arrives – and it <em>will</em> arrive – the socialists are going to do a lot of damage.</p>
  307. <p>Elections can be complicated things, but governments are not. As Murray Rothbard <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/7042389-if-the-bulk-of-the-public-were-really-convinced-of" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>:</p>
  308. <blockquote><p>If the bulk of the public were really convinced of the illegitimacy of the State, if it were convinced that the State is nothing more nor less than a bandit gang writ large, then the State would soon collapse to take on no more status or breadth of existence than another Mafia gang.</p></blockquote>
  309. <p>Given current public attitudes, voters are not convinced that the state is illegitimate, but rather that it is just doing a bad job and that the DSA can fix it. People in the MAGA movement also see state power as the premier level of things, and their statist agenda reflects the belief that government intervention will result in a better economy and better life for them, even while Donald Trump continues to demand more inflation and pushes through tariffs that can only depress the economy further.</p>
  310. <p>Socialists, of course, see the <a href="https://mises.org/mises-wire/goal-socialists-socialism-not-prosperity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">implementation</a> of socialism as the highest order of society. Getting to that lofty place has been a different matter. It is a testament to our media age that American socialism now depends upon the young, good-looking faces of a Mamdani or an AOC. The one exception is the octogenarian Bernie Sanders, who still carries the look of the Brooklyn Trotskyite he was in his youth. It was once believed that only the most ruthless could make socialism work; thus, the mass murdering of a Lenin, Stalin, Mao, or Pol Pot was necessary to establish the ideal socialist state. Today, however, socialism comes with the buzzword of “democracy” and a pretty face.</p>
  311. <p>For all the over-the-top celebrations and predictions that America’s future is democratic socialism, it is still an urban movement and will be centered around the large, wealthy cities, places that still <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/the-revolt-of-the-rich-kids-privilege-status-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depend</a> heavily upon the very wealthy that the socialists claim they want to drive from their midst. Mamdani, AOC, and Sanders are all from New York City, and even for all the landslide talk, Mamdani only won slightly more than half the votes in an election in which his voters were by far the most enthusiastic.</p>
  312. <p>The DSA will do well in cities like Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, and half a dozen wealthy California cities, and Chicago. Democrats running those places have long tolerated the violence both from ordinary criminals that they refuse to jail and the black-clad protesters who claim to know everything about an economy but never have held a job. Both the protesters and the violent criminals are vital to the governing efforts of socialists, serving as the movement’s shock troops, given that the DSA’s governing philosophy is <a href="https://mises.org/mises-wire/anarcho-tyranny-and-danger-public-spaces" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anarcho-Tyranny</a>.</p>
  313. <p>Doing well, however, refers only to being elected and having some control of the city councils, as Democrats that govern like socialists inevitably lead their cities into states of decay and loss. For now, the socialists and their supporters are very good at making promises and using stirring rhetoric, but their belief that they can simply order a better state of things into existence is and always will be flawed. Not that more than a century of failure <a href="https://mises.org/mises-wire/goal-socialists-socialism-not-prosperity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deters</a> them, as socialism is not about a state of affairs but rather a state of mind, so to people like Mamdani, AOC, and their supporters, socialism’s success is proven because they have won elections.</p>
  314. <p>As for the rest of the country, it remains to be seen how well the socialists will do in elections outside of New York and the Left Coast. The DSA does not want to be seen simply as the dominant political power in a few big cities, and its members are in the process of <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/inside-the-dsas-hostile-takeover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">becoming</a> the driving force of the Democratic Party itself. Olivia Reingold writes:</p>
  315. <blockquote><p>…this is just the beginning. <em>The Free Press </em>reviewed thousands of pages of internal Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) documents, which show that the organization’s leaders view Mamdani as a tool in their agenda to abolish prisons and borders, and ultimately end in what they call the “<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20250618152303/https:/www.dsausa.org/dsa-political-platform-from-2021-convention/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">barbaric order of capitalism</a>.” The DSA, <a href="https://www.dsausa.org/about-us/history/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">founded in 1982</a>, is a political body dedicated to the doctrine of democratic socialism, which is a variety of socialism that simply specifies how it would like revolution to occur: peacefully, through the subversion of democracy. Mamdani, a dues-paying DSA member <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/26/democratic-socialists-zohran-mamdani-mayor-nyc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">since 2017</a>, is the tip of that spear.</p></blockquote>
  316. <p>She continues:</p>
  317. <blockquote><p>The DSA held its <a href="https://convention2025.dsausa.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">annual convention</a> in August, with the theme “Rebirth and Beyond: Reflecting on a decade of DSA’s growth and preparing for a decade of party building.” There, delegates voted to adopt a resolution titled “Principles for Party-Building,” which stated that the purpose of the DSA is “to unite workers to win the battle for democracy and bring about socialism, not to seek a governing coalition with a perceived lesser evil under the current undemocratic political system.” The resolution stated that the goals go beyond the White House. “A socialist party in the United States,” the document said, “must be a part of the global political movement of the working class.”</p></blockquote>
  318. <p>Unfortunately for the DSA, that vaunted “working class” does not provide the base support for this movement any more than the “workers” drove the Bolsheviks a century ago. The political base of the DSA – like socialism everywhere – comes from economic and educational elites whose abstract views of what a society <em>should be like</em> dominate the political agenda. Of course, the so-called Utopia that these socialist elites create fails to resemble the world they have claimed to produce, but even a century of socialist failure in Europe and Asia has failed to dampen the elites’ enthusiasm. Certainly, the <a href="https://www.newstimes.com/news/politics/article/photos-of-zohran-mamdani-and-his-supporters-as-21140651.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pictures</a> of cheering Mamdani supporters after the election prove the latter point.</p>
  319. <p>This situation will not change any time soon. Mamdani <a href="https://reason.com/2025/11/05/mamdani-claims-mandate-for-bigger-government-there-is-no-problem-too-large-for-government-to-solve/?utm_source=Reason+Magazine&amp;utm_campaign=cb85a9f973-reason_brand%7Cnew_at_reason%7C2025_11_05&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_31d7ef7f57-cb85a9f973-587974851" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> in his victory speech,</p>
  320. <blockquote><p>We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about. For years, those in City Hall have only helped those who can help them. But on January 1st, we will usher in a city government that helps everyone.</p></blockquote>
  321. <p>However, given that he ran his campaign on the <a href="https://robertreich.substack.com/p/in-conversation-with-zohran-mamdani" target="_blank" rel="noopener">theme</a> that so-called oligarchs are stealing from everyone else, and that “wealthy” people must face large tax increases in order to pay for the free goods and services he has promised to everyone else in the city, it would be impossible for the NYC government to help “everyone.” Socialists have often depended upon demonizing a minority of the population, and in some instances, murdering many of them and expropriating their property in the name of “equality.” While Mamdani and his followers have not yet called for anyone to be killed (although they did cheer on the murders of Charlie Kirk and Brian Thompson), one doubts they will show any sympathy to the families of socialism’s victims, just as they <a href="https://insights.som.yale.edu/insights/very-un-american-response-to-the-murder-of-brian-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demonized</a> the families of Kirk and Thompson.</p>
  322. <h4><strong>An Electoral Perspective</strong></h4>
  323. <p>As noted earlier, Mamdani barely <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/11/04/us/elections/results-new-york-city-mayor.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> half of the vote, and the two main candidates he beat – former disgraced Gov. Andrew Cuomo and political neophyte Curtis Sliwa – were hardly formidable opponents. For all the claims that Mamdani has toppled an oligarchy, the electoral results would hardly have been different had he run against two random people picked up from the street.</p>
  324. <p>For that matter, while Mamdani was winning in NYC, another Muslim member of the DSA, Omar Fateh, was <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/11/05/us-news/omar-fateh-the-minnesota-mamdani-loses-minneapolis-race-to-mayor-jacob-frey/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">losing</a> the mayoral election in Minneapolis to the progressive mayor, Jacob Frey, who has not exactly distinguished himself as a strong leader in the past five years. Although one must understand that the DSA supporters are not going away, they will have to win victories in competitive elections if they wish to complete their “<a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/inside-the-dsas-hostile-takeover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hostile takeover</a>” of the Democratic Party.</p>
  325. <p>There are some things working in the DSA&#8217;s favor, the first being that as the U.S. economy slowly implodes in the face of inflation and the destruction of economic opportunities, socialists certainly will try to step into the void. The promises of lower rents, free food, free medical care, and employment for all can be enticing when one is unemployed and facing the loss of a home. Likewise, President Trump’s tariffs are inevitably shrinking the economy, and his bellicose rhetoric and the government shutdown are not presenting an attractive picture to potential voters.</p>
  326. <p>But contra Robert Reich and others, Mamdani’s victory in a Democratic city is not proof that democratic socialism is about to sweep the country. Socialism might be popular with some people, but it is still a failed ideology that invariably implodes in economic failure. Nothing, not even young, attractive candidates, can change that hard fact. Unfortunately, while Mamdani’s election does not mean that the Hammer and Sickle are about to supplant the Stars and Stripes, neither does it mean we shouldn’t worry about socialists ruining our future. They will do so if the voters allow it.</p>

  367. <p>While speaking to Western defense contractors at the NATO-Industry Forum in Bucharest on Thursday, Rutte told the bloc’s arms makers that “there is more cash on the table and even more will flow” amid NATO’s rearmament push.</p>
  368. <p><a href="https://www.rt.com/news/627412-nato-rutte-industry-ukraine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to a report by <em>RT,</em> </a>Rutte also said that the fighting between Moscow and Kiev is a “threat” to NATO. He added that “the danger posed by Russia will not end when this war does. For the foreseeable future, Russia will remain a destabilizing force in Europe and the world.”</p>
  369. <p>“And Russia is not alone in its efforts to undermine the global rules. As you know, it is working with China, with North Korea, with Iran, and others. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) remains opposed to the measure. A couple of lawmakers have already crossed the center aisle, including Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nevada), and Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pennsylvania, who support the GOP&#8217;s clean continuing resolution.</p>

  649. <p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Ukraine’s ruler, Volodymyr Zelensky, claimed in an interview with <a href="https://www.rt.com/news/627354-orban-zelensky-eu-ukraine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Euronews’ Enlargement Summit</em> reported on by <em>RT</em> </a>on Tuesday that “Orban has to offer something for Ukraine, which is protecting the whole Europe from Russia, and even now, during this war, we did not get any support from him.”</span></p>
  650. <p>Orban has long been against furthering the war and helping Ukraine continue it as Russia maintains the upper hand in the conflict.</p>
  651. <p>Zelensky claimed that Hungary is providing “very specific support” for Russia by blocking Kiev’s potential entry to the bloc. Orban fired back, saying on X that Hungary “will not support Ukraine’s membership in the European Union, because it would bring the war into Europe and take the money of Hungarians out to Ukraine.”</p>
  652. <p>“I must reject the suggestion that Hungary owes Ukraine anything. Ukraine does not defend Hungary from anyone or anything. We did not ask for such a thing, and we never will,” Orban wrote.</p>
  653. <p>The Hungarian ruler added that a unanimous decision by all 27 EU nations is needed to add another country to the bloc, meaning that “every member state has the sovereign right to support or oppose the admission of a new member.”</p>

  656. <p>Unlike most other EU nations, Hungary has taken a neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict. That appears to be the more level-headed response to Ukraine&#8217;s demands. Orban has so far refused to supply military aid to Kiev and is calling for a diplomatic solution to the crisis. Orban has provided Kiev with some humanitarian aid; however, it wants to remain neutral when it comes to taking sides in the war.</p>
