45.
Scepticism among consumers regarding AI-generated news content, particularly on sensitive topics such as politics, remains pronounced. A recent report by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism has highlighted growing global concerns regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production and its potential implications for misinformation.

 46.
The institute’s annual Digital News Report, based on surveys conducted across 47 countries with nearly 100,000 participants, underscores significant challenges faced by newsrooms striving to engage audiences effectively.

 47.
According to the report, 52 per cent of respondents in the United States and 63 per cent in the United Kingdom expressed discomfort with predominantly AI-produced news. The survey, which involved 2,000 respondents per country, indicated a more favourable perception of AI when used behind the scenes to enhance journalistic efficiency.

 49.
Google, OpenAI Posing Major Challenge

 50.
Released on Monday, the report reveals that news media worldwide are grappling with the advent of generative AI technologies. Companies like Google and OpenAI are pioneering tools capable of summarising information and diverting traffic from traditional news outlets, posing a new frontier for the industry.

 51.
Nic Newman, senior research associate at the Reuters Institute, noted, “It was surprising to see the level of suspicion. People broadly had concerns about the potential impact on content reliability and trust.”

 52.
Fake News Concerns Increase

 53.
Additionally, the report highlights a three-percentage-point increase from the previous year in concerns over fake news content online, with 59 per cent of respondents expressing worry. This concern was particularly acute in countries like South Africa (81 per cent) and the U.S. (72 per cent), both of which face imminent elections this year.

 54.
Another significant challenge identified in the report is the reluctance of audiences to pay for news subscriptions. Despite a slight increase during the pandemic, only 17 per cent of respondents across 20 countries reported paying for online news—a figure that has remained stagnant for the past three years. Notably, a substantial portion of U.S. news subscribers benefit from discounted rates, with 46 per cent paying less than full price due to promotional offers or trial subscriptions.

 55.
Moreover, the report sheds light on the evolving landscape of news consumption, where social media influencers on platforms like TikTok are increasingly shaping how news is disseminated. In a survey involving over 5,600 TikTok users, 57 per cent indicated a preference for individual personalities over traditional journalists or news brands.

 56.
ALSO READ: G7 Summit: PM Modi Highlights India’s National AI Strategy Initiative, Calls For Collective Efforts To Usher In ‘Green Era’

 57.
Commenting on these findings, Nic Newman emphasised the need for newsrooms to forge direct connections with their audiences while strategically leveraging platforms to engage younger demographics. “These influencers play a significant role in shaping news consumption patterns,” Newman stated.

 58.
The report also identified notable personalities influencing news consumption habits on TikTok, such as Vitus “V” Spehar, who has amassed 3.1 million followers with a distinctive approach to delivering daily headlines.

 59.
Conducted in the US, UK, France, Argentina, and Brazil, the Digital News Report asked participants to name up to three mainstream or alternative news sources they follow. Notably, the top personalities cited in the US primarily offered political commentary rather than original news gathering, including figures like former Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson, podcast host Joe Rogan, and progressive radio host David Pakman.

 60.
As concerns over AI’s role in news production continue to grow, the report underscores the urgent need for newsrooms to navigate these challenges while preserving trust and credibility among their audiences.

 100. WhatsApp is reportedly testing a feature to transcribe voice messages for users. According to WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, to transcribe voice notes, users will have to download 150MB of new app data. This feature will reportedly work on language-specific speech recognition, allowing users to select different languages for different voice notes. Users will have to download language-specific packages to enable transcription. This package maintains end-to-end encryption and ensures that data is not shared externally, as transcripts are processed locally on the device.

 101.

102. After downloading the additional data, users will be able to use the transcribing feature. This feature will be helpful when playing the voice recording is not possible or when the user prefers reading to listening. The new feature will also offer convenience to users who communicate in different languages.

 103.

104. The feature was first seen in the WhatsApp for iPhone beta update and is expected to be rolled out for Android soon.

 105.

106. WhatsApp is also planning to refine the feature by letting users decide the language for transcribing, as reported by WABetaInfo in another report referring to WhatsApp Beta for Android version 2.24.13.8. This feature will be available in different updates. It will likely support languages such as Hindi, English, Russian, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish, with more languages expected to be added later. To enable transcribing in these languages, users will have to select the language and download additional data packages.

 107.

108. The feature has not been officially launched and is only available in beta versions. As the feature is still being developed, it is not accessible to public beta testers.

 109.

110. Earlier, WhatsApp had announced that it is set to enhance the calling experience on the platform with new features. Named “Calling Update”, the features will be available across desktop and mobile apps in the coming weeks. The update includes support for screen sharing with audio, increased participation for video calls across devices, and spotlighting the speaker.

 167.
Prashant Ruia, son of Shahi Ruia and director of Essar Capital, which manages the group’s portfolio of investments, considers himself fortunate to be surrounded by support system of his family, where members cherish the strong bonds transcending generations.

 168.
In an interview to PTI, Ruia said he is of firm belief that maintaining strong family relations require careful alignment of goals and ensuring each family member has space to express themselves and thrive.

 169.
“If the goals are aligned and people are given space to express themselves, it is possible (for families to stick together). I am surprised that the tradition is coming down so fast. We have maintained it, and it has been a tremendous experience…having that support system at home, while travelling, at work, of course… is quite good and we are very happy,” he said.

 170.
First generation entrepreneurs Shashi and Ravi Ruia founded Essar group in 1969 when it bagged a Rs 2.5 crore order from the Madras Port Trust for the construction of an outer breakwater in the port. In the early years, Essar focused on the construction and engineering sector. It built a number of major infrastructure projects, including bridges, dams, and power plants. In the 1980s, Essar diversified into the energy sector, with the acquisition of a number of oil and gas assets. In the 1990s, Essar expanded its operations into the steel and telecommunications sectors. It built steel plants, an oil refinery and India’s second largest telecom operator with Hutchison. It exited the telecom business, sold oil refinery to a consortium led by Russia’s Rosneft and had to let go the steel plants to ArcelorMittal when insolvency proceedings were initiated to recover unpaid loans.

 171.
After repaying loans of close to Rs 2 lakh crore, Essar is now reinventing itself.

 172.
“Revenues of the group are about USD 15 billion. In terms of Group EBITDA, we have a run rate of about a billion dollars, that is about Rs 8,000 crore and the group is currently valued…the assets under management…is valued at about USD 8 billion. So that’s sort of where we are as a group today,” Ruia said.

 173.
The group has about 14 portfolio companies where investments are being channelised. “Some of these companies are in India, some international. We operate globally. And we are building out,” he said.

 174.
The conglomerate now holds assets that span a 10 million tonne a year oil refinery in the UK, 15 trillion cubic feet reserves of hydrocarbons in India and Vietnam and a 1,200 MW power plant in India.

 175.
Its infra sector assets include a storage terminal in the UK of 3 million cubic meters capacity and a 20 MTPA port in India, metal and mining sector assets include a major iron ore mine and pellet project in India and the US, technology & services sector assets include global EPC business and IT solutions provider with centres across 35+ countries. The group has also made foray into renewables recently.

 176.
In a country where young children born into wealthy business families are forgiven for living it up as a teenager, Ruia showed up at Essar office fairly early.

 177.
“As far as my journey is concerned, yes, I did start early. But at that time, our group was fairly small in the sense papa (my father) and chacha (uncle)… they got started in 1969. But we were still a very small group in 80-85 and I started working with my father in all my holidays at the age of 12….well, not working but actually being there,” Ruia said.

 178.
He recalls how “he was inclined towards work” from the beginning, and even as he started college, clocking office hours daily became part of his regular schedule.

 179.
Ruia said he even passed an opportunity to study abroad, opting instead to continue working within the Group and contribute to growing business. His stint started with participating in meetings, listening and understanding, moving from one department to another to observe the dynamics of business, and by 17, Ruia was given responsibility at the Group.

 180.
“…we were in early stage…things were just getting going and it was very exciting time for us. And I was enjoying myself. So ‘Marwari School of Management’ was the one I went to,” he said in lighter vein.

 181.
Prashant has a sibling Anshuman and cousins Rewant and Smiti (children of Ravi Ruia). The family has stayed together for over 50 years, Ruia said with pride.

 182.
“We have always stayed together… my father and uncle actually, this is a tradition…it was set up by my father, my uncle and my grandmother. So she made sure that we all stay together and it’s been like that ever since,” Ruia said.

 183.
Some of the most famous family feuds in India include the public battle between Mukesh and Anil Ambani to control the Reliance empire after their father Dhirubhai Ambani died without a will.

 184.
A couple of years back, Hinduja brothers battled over control of the USD 18 billion 107-year-old British-Indian group that has six publicly traded entities including Ashok Leyland.

 185.
In 2000, Rajan and Anil Nanda sparred over Escorts empire built by their father Har Prasad. The ‘Complete Man’ company Raymond saw a fallout between former chairman Vijaypat Singhani and his son, Gautam in 2023. Apollo Tyres chairman Onkar S Kanwar too had a spat with his father, Raunaq Singh over the control of the company in the 1990s.

 186.
The most recent is Samir Modi accusing his mother of orchestrating an attack on him, worsening the feud among the late KK Modi’s family members over their inheritance.

 232.
Google has declared war on anyone using an ad-blocker on YouTube, violating the platform’s terms of use. Technically, Google is looking for ways to curb the use of these tools when users try to watch any of the platform’s videos.

 233.
For several weeks, Google has been putting the squeeze on Internet users using ad-blocking software. These types of software generally take the form of a browser extension that enables users to bypass the (many) ads featured on YouTube. Google’s aim is to persuade users to accept a free model, but with advertising, or to switch to its paid YouTube Premium offer, for RM17.90 a month.

 234.
On the web page about its policy on ads shown on YouTube, Google clearly explains that users must agree to view them in order to take advantage of its free offer, and warns those using ad-blocking software: “If you use ad-blockers, we’ll ask you to allow ads on YouTube or sign up for YouTube Premium. If you continue to use ad blockers, we may block your video playback.”

 235.
On the same page, Google also explains how to authorise ad delivery, regardless of the blocker used – AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, uBlock Origin etc.

 236.
Depending on the browser and extension installed, many users with ad-blockers have recently found themselves unable to play YouTube videos properly, as they instantly jump from beginning to end. Another “trick” found by Google to interfere with the viewing of its videos without going through the advertising process is the insertion of advertising sequences directly via YouTube’s servers into the main video stream.

 237.
In any case, this is what more and more users are reporting on social networks, with the result that video timestamps are significantly altered. At the same time, other users are not reporting any noticeable interference. It seems that Google and the publishers of these ad-blocking tools are currently engaged in a merciless technological battle. – AFP Relaxnews

 259.

 260.

 261.
Last year, the ICC ruled that it would investigate and prosecute war crimes the same as kinetic war crimes, largely in response to the conflict in Ukraine.

 262.
Now, sources speaking to Reuters have revealed that prosecutors at the ICC are currently investigating whether cyber attacks targeting Ukrainian civilians are classed as war crimes.

 263.
The investigation is looking into attacks on critical infrastructure such as power and water, preventing civilians access to basic amenities needed to survive, such as water for cooking and drinking, and power for heat in the harsh winters.

 264.
Four major cyber attacks on energy infrastructure are under investigation, according to two of the sources.

 265.
Whilst sources speaking with Reuters are saying that the attacks under investigation go back to the Russian invasion in February 2022, two other sources confirmed that the investigations could look back as far as 2015, the year that followed Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.

 266.
Ukraine is looking to support the investigation, collecting its own evidence.

 267.
If the investigation determines that the attacks are war crimes, it could lead to arrests being made, a world first for cyber warfare.

 268.
The ICC has is eye closely on a Russian group called “Sandworm”, which is believed to have connections to Russian military intelligence, according to cyber experts and Ukrainian officials.

 269.
The group has been in operation for some time, best known for an attack on NotPetya in 2017, targeting Ukrainian computer systems and disrupting the nation’s power grid, leaving hundreds of thousands of residents without electricity during the depths of winter.

 270.
In 2022, the US offered a $10 million bounty for information on the group.

 271.
Whilst the ICC has not provided comment on the matter, it has issued four arrest warrants since the invasion started, including for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

 272.
In addition, an arrest warrant was placed for two Russian commanders for attacks on civilian infrastructure.

 273.
Despite the warrants, Russia rejects the warrants as “corruption by law”. Neither it nor Ukraine are signatories to the ICC, however the latter has granted the court jurisdiction.

 306.

 307.

 308. Google is rolling out AI across all its products and Chrome is part of that. Recently they added AI to the browsing history feature in Chrome. This means AI will be used to help you find and retrieve websites you’ve visited before. But this has raised questions about how much AI should have access to and learn from our browsing history and data.

 309.
For example, paying for cloud backups is seen as an annoyance until you lose or have your device stolen and the backup saves your data. Similarly, AI in Chrome’s History Search will help you find web pages based on the content not just the page title or URL. Last week a research Leopeva64 discovered signs of this new AI feature but details were still unclear.

 310.
Luckily Chrome is evolving and Google has updated the History Search feature. According to the update, you’ll soon be able to search your browsing history based on the actual content of web pages. This will make browsing history search much faster whether you’re browsing through the History page or searching directly from the address bar using ‘@history’ followed by keywords.

 311.
Despite the benefits, the AI in browsing history raises valid privacy concerns. Leopeva64’s discovery showed Google’s acknowledgement of this through a disclaimer. It says Google and its human reviewers may access certain data such as search terms, content from relevant web pages and AI-generated outputs. Google assures that this data is encrypted and stored locally on your device to support the History Search feature.

 312.

 313.
While AI needs data to work, privacy conscious users will find these disclosures uncomfortable. Locally processing data on the device would be more private. This is similar to Microsoft’s Copilot AI’s Recall feature which was criticized and delayed due to similar privacy concerns.

 314.
The acceptance of Chrome’s History Search feature will depend on if it’s an optional feature or a default one to speed up AI development. User reaction will be key since the feature is still under development by Google, so we have to watch and wait, for now.

 677. Google’s June Pixel Feature Drop is bringing some exciting features to Pixel phones, like Gemini Nano, a fancier Pixel Recorder, and enhancements to the Pixel Camera app.

 678.
The Pixel Feature Drop was released a few days ago, but it’s just now that users are getting the camera upgrades, as spotted by 9to5Google.

 679.
It seems the update hasn’t rolled out to all users just yet, and you’ll need to wait for Google to turn the update on server-side.

 680.
The update brings very useful enhancements to the Camera app. With this update, you can manually select a lens (on Pro-branded Pixels and the Pixel Fold). This option gives you more control over how you want your picture to turn out. You can pick from UW, W, and T as options – respectively ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto.

 681.
Also, there’s a new “Pro” settings tab giving you access to more advanced settings. You can set the lens selection from auto to manual, and you can choose between RAW and JPEG formats there.

 682.
The update also brings an improved experience with HDR+. Thanks to this improvement, you will have fewer ruined images and more photos with everyone with open eyes and smiling.

 683.
These small but frankly quite useful updates are coming just at the right time. We enter summer, the time for vacations, fun times at the beach, and long evenings. The Camera app will for sure be used to capture these sweet memories, and the new tweaks are going to make the experience even better.

 750.
Most artificial intelligence (AI) models are being trained on datasets which are poorly designed which has undermined the quality of the end products, former Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Monday.

 751.
In a post on social media platform X, the former minister said large language models’ (LLMs) “bullshit content” comes from most models being trained on content/datasets that are, “to politely use the phrase, not quality assured”.

 752.
“That is why you have the embarrassing sight of billion-dollar Gemini/ChatGPT on many occasions spewing nonsense,” said Chandrasekhar.

 753.
He was reacting to Ethan Mollick, Associate Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in the US, who posted that the idea that “LLMs bullshit – produce content without regard to truth – is not new”.

 754.
“But I don’t think it is that helpful a framework, since, in the end, LLMs may be more accurate than humans in many tasks,” said the professor.

 755.
Chandrasekhar, former Minister of State for Electronics and IT, responded: “Garbage in, Garbage out is an old adage in programming especially if you are depending on scraping the internet”.

 756.
An X user posted that AI machines needed to be fed information and not intelligent to deconstruct or articulate like a human. “End of the day, the human mind still decides what the machine has to say,” she added.
