The Cram Fire, burning about 15 miles north of Madras in Central Oregon, has grown to 94,000 acres as of Friday morning. The fire sparked on Sunday, July 13, and is actively burning through tall grass, brush, and some timber.

Growth is expected to continue Friday afternoon and evening as breezy conditions develop. A Red Flag Warning is in effect Friday with wind gusts topping out around 35 mph and relative humidity dipping as low as 10%, creating dangerous fire weather conditions. If it continues to grow, the Cram Fire could become Oregon’s first “megafire” of the season – a term used for wildfires that burn over 100,000 acres.

In recent years, Oregon has seen several megafires during peak fire season, including six in 2020 alone. That historic season burned well over a million acres of land statewide. Last summer also brought significant megafire activity and burned more acreage than in the 2020 season.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the Cram Fire was sparked by a transformer in the area. Officials have issued Level 3 “Go Now,” Level 2 “Be Set,” and Level 1 “Be Ready” evacuations for both counties.

PHOTOS: Amid a week of spreading wildfires and evacuation orders issued across Colorado, a new fire has broken out – this one calling for a new set of evacuations near Rifle in western Colorado. According to the Grand Valley Fire Protection District, the Cottonwood Flat Fire, which broke out Thursday afternoon, is burning on County Road 309, just south of Interstate 70 between Parachute and Rulison. At the last report just after 10 p.m., officials said the fire had burned 310 acres. Residents within a one-mile radius of 1800 County Road 309 were told to evacuate immediately, while a pre-evacuation warning was issued for those in a two-mile radius of the fire. The Cottonwood Park Rodeo Grounds in Parachute was opened to shelter evacuated livestock. Highway 6 was closed for hours in both directions Thursday afternoon, impacting a stretch of the road between mile markers 77 and 83 from Parachute to Rulison. The highway reopened at around 10:20 p.m. Thursday night, officials confirmed. The origin and cause of the fire are currently unknown.

VIDEO: Firefighters and crews continue to battle the Monroe Canyon Fire in Sevier County, but many wonder who’s there to help those men and women when they’re the ones in need? A Kaysville crew here is helping with that specific task. It’s day three of 14 for Garrett Matthews and Tyler Huff, and it’s the first time they’ve been deployed as wildland fire paramedics.

“Today’s day three. It’s been good, been a big difference from what we’re used to doing,” explained Huff. “A lot of our stuff is treating things that are pretty common, things like bee stings, people getting sores on their feet, dehydration, we haven’t really had a lot yet.”

Not every firefighter paramedic can venture into wildfires to help; the job requires a certification through the Utah Division of Natural Resources. Matthews and Huff are currently the only crew at the Monroe Fire cleared to help firefighters on the front lines.

“This didn’t happen overnight. We’ve actually been working on this for over a year now to get certified, get our guys certified, and checked off to be able to help,” said Kelton Vine with the Kaysville Fire Department. “It does feel good to be able to help out in some of the bigger incidents in the state.”

Vine, who also serves as a firefighter paramedic, says crews on the frontline of the Utah wildfires can face numerous difficulties, from heat exhaustion to burns, so having extra help can make a big difference. Matthews and Huff are working 16-hour shifts, always prepared for any emergency that comes their way.

Regardless of the injury or illness, the duo says their training prepared them for situations like this, and their community, both near and far, is showing their appreciation. “I mean, we definitely feel appreciated,” Matthews said, “but these other guys definitely deserve the appreciation, they’re doing the dirty work.”

VIDEO: A man who fell nearly 100 feet while hiking in southern Colorado is saved and on the road to recovery, all thanks to a small group of good Samaritans, including an Albuquerque EMT in the right place at the right time. After a hike to the scenic Ice Lakes in southern Colorado, Casey Brennan, his girlfriend, and her brother were going down the trail when things took a turn.

“A situation like that is a once-of-a-lifetime thing you come across,” said Brennan. They were walking down the trail when a couple alerted them to a man who had fallen nearly 100 feet into a creek. “It’s just like …the most basic form of humanity when there’s someone who needs help and you’re capable to just jump to it,” he said.

And so he did. He carefully worked his way down when what he thought would be a recovery turned into a rescue. “When I got to the bottom of the creek, he was just kind of starting to come back to, and at that point it was just like ok, we got a lot of work to do,” said Brennan.

Brennan, who happens to be an EMT at an Albuquerque hospital, assessed the 65-year-old man’s injuries and moved him out of the near-freezing water. “I was able to rip his shirt off and use that to cover his head, kind of stop some of the bleeding,” he said.

At one point, Brennan even took the shirt off his own back to keep the man warm. Rain, thunder, and hail started to pour down when another stroke of luck hit. A rescue volunteer who was on her own hike came across the scene and began to help. Another man was also able to run down the trail and call for a rescue team.

VIDEO: A scary situation for one neighborhood in Grand Island after first responders raced to rescue a man trapped in the ground. The Grand Island Fire Department was called out just before 1 p.m. to a home on Frostfire Avenue. It was regarding a confined space call where there had been a partial collapse with a person trapped. GIFD Battalion Chief Scott Kuehl said when he arrived on scene, he saw the man in the ground was alive and responsive. The man was trapped from the waist down. He had been working in the area when the dirt collapsed.

Kuehl said right now, the ground is very wet on top and gets heavy. The ground underneath is soft and it got pushed out the bottom and pinned the man up against the foundation wall. Kuehl said they brought in their technical rescue equipment to help rescue the man using confined space techniques. He said they work on moving the dirt away from the edge and away from the person to make a safer scene.

Kuehl said they had to move a lot of dirt and move it by hand with small shovels. He said neighbors offered up tools as well as GIPD officers jumping in as well to help. “It was very labor intensive but we had to make it that way to make it safe,” he said. Once the man was out of the ground, he was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

VIDEO: Fire Station 1 in downtown Rapid City has been under construction since February of 2023. Crews had to navigate the construction as Fire Station 1 has the most activity for the department. “All built around, making sure that this department can remain functional, so that drove where we placed the addition,” Head Architect Brad Burns said. One of the new additions can provide help immediately in their first aid rooms.

“We have a lot of walk-in patients, people that come in off the street, that just see a fire station and walk in the front door and need assistance. So what we built was basically a doctors office exam room a room where we can take them so it’s private for them,” RCFD Fire Chief Jason Culberson said.

These upgrades were all about efficiency and comfort. “Their sleeping quarters are on the second floor and fire poles aren’t used a lot anymore, but I think that’s maybe one of the favorite things for the firefighters is that they get a fire pole,” Burns said.

“One building for all of our admin folks and really giving a great place for our operations. Our paramedics and our firefighters, they are able to come back to a place that is comfortable, accessible, warm and still keeps up with our main mission and goal in mind.” Culberson said

This fire station had remained almost the same for over 50 years, and now with these upgrades they expect this building to last strongly for the next 50 or more years. This project is expected to be complete by the end of the summer with an open house for the public slated for early September.

In the wake of the June 29 deadly attack on North Idaho firefighters, Idaho U.S. senators introduced a bill to increase penalties for crimes against first responders. Idaho Republican Sens. Jim Risch and Mike Crapo as well as Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt introduced the Graham Hoffman Act, which would make it a federal crime to assault first responders, according to a press release. Under the act, a knowing assault of a first responder while they are performing official duties that causes serious bodily harm, death or attempts to do so, would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison, fined or both.

If the attack results in death or the includes a kidnapping or attempted kidnapping, the penalty could be up to a life sentence. “Last month’s evil attack on first responders in North Idaho is a stark reminder of the dangers our brave men and women in uniform face every day,” Risch said in the release. “The Graham Hoffman Act is commonsense legislation to properly punish those who assault the men and women who keep our communities safe.” Risch said he and his wife, Vicki, “continue to pray for the victims of the North Idaho ambush, their loved ones, and all affected by this reprehensible act.” The attack in Coeur d’Alene killed Coeur d’Alene Fire Department Battalion Chief John Morrison and Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and severely injured engineer Dave Tysdal, who also works for the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department.

VIDEO: A 28-year-old suspect has been arrested, charged and indicted on an arson charge in connection with the fire that destroyed a Makiki playground. Honolulu Parks and Recreation spokesperson Nate Serota said Honolulu police arrested Brendon Seis on July 3, after surveillance footage placed him at the scene of the crime. The playground was set ablaze around 8:45 a.m. on June 30. Honolulu firefighters responded shortly after and extinguished the flames.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, investigators found several spots around the playground where an accelerant was used. It was also thanks to surveillance cameras at the park that helped police locate Seis, who has no local address. Court records showed Seis has received nine citations related to sleeping at parks or bus stops in the Makiki area since February 2024, and several of the police citations noted that he refused shelter. City officials said the playground has been demolished, and they are working with “a multi-state contracting system to rebuild the playground.” “This will hopefully make the rebuild less costly and more efficient, as new playgrounds can range from $200,000 to $300,000 to rebuild,” Serota said.

Unlike the playground at Wahiawa District Park, Serota said the rebuild could take at least a couple of months. The Wahiawa District playground was set ablaze in May. “Unfortunately, vandalism is an everyday occurrence that we deal with at the parks department, but this is particularly egregious, when a keiki playground is burned to the ground, it serves no purpose,” Serota said. “This is a place where kids are supposed to have fond memories and have fun in the park, and now it’s a sore spot until we get a new one in place.”

VIDEO: The Western Pines Fire, which ignited last week, has scorched nearly 6,000 acres, 13 miles north of Davenport. The blaze remains 40% contained, and while some residents are starting to return home, 21 homes have been destroyed. Level three evacuations are still in effect, but Level one and two evacuations have been lifted. Fire crews and emergency personnel continue their efforts in the area. I spoke with those at the Red Cross emergency shelter about their experiences over the past few days. Dan Eaton, one of the residents who lost his home, shared his experience of narrowly escaping the fire. “The hardest part for me is thinking that I was here for an hour and I didn’t grab anything,” Eaton said.

Community members in Davenport are coming together to support those who have lost everything. Esha Gollapalli and Mel O’Neal have been working at the Western Pines Fire relief camp for the past week. “In terms of our jobs there’s less to do but that’s a good thing because the evacuations are clearing up the fire staff is super helpful,” they said. For those who lost their homes, the focus now is on rebuilding. “That’s our plan is to rebuild. Cause this is our legacy. This is my family’s legacy,” one resident stated. Gollapalli finds inspiration in how the Davenport community has united during this crisis. Eaton echoed this sentiment. “I’m very humbled by all the support and love being shown by people, it’s just amazing. How do you pay that forward? You don’t. You can’t,” he said.

VIDEO: A high-adventure program in the Lake Area is giving high school-aged girls a chance to train alongside firefighters and law enforcement officers. Rescue training, defense tactics, and investigating skills are just some of the skills young ladies at Camp ResQ got to learn this week. The majority of firefighters are police officers in the U.S. are men. That’s why camp leader Cheri Ardoin started this program to show girls that it’s not possible to become a first responder, but you could reach new heights in the field. “A lot of girls in the community don’t feel like that’s really an option for them. They don’t see a lot of females on police calls or on fire calls, so they really don’t pursue that,” Ardion said. Just in a matter of days, she’s watched these young women realize their full capabilities. “I see them now in the community and they tell me, ‘Hey, I’ve done CPR on somebody,’ or ‘Hey, I’ve practiced my life skill that you taught, or ‘Hey, I have confidence now, I’m not shy. I talk to people; I get stuff done.’ So, seeing that and hearing that from the girls means a lot,” Ardoin said.

The skills they learn are also for everyday life, like learning to put out a kitchen fire, escape a building, and use self-defense. Camper Adley White said, “If something happens to him, or if he does something like hurt himself, this really helps with that. If there’s a fire at her own house, that’ll help (knowing) how to put that out.” Camper Kherringhton Nguien said, “Some of these things can happen, like in real-life scenarios like choking and house fires and things like that. This could really save my life or somebody else’s life.”

Though the courses take them out of their comfort zone, the ladies said they wouldn’t trade this experience for anything else. Camper Shelby Fraiser said, “Rappelling (was my favorite) because it was fun and I’ve never really gotten to do it before.” Camper Skylar Piper said, “We’re learning how to push through on our discomfort, and we’re actually putting out a fire and working with one another. We’re putting out that fire. We’re communicating with one another. We’re super uncomfortable while doing it, but I think that’s just building up our discipline and our grit.” Camp ResQ hopes to expand next year so they can show more girls that their possibilities in life are endless.
