44.
PHOTOS: New Bern Fire-Rescue’s 92-year-old 1933 firetruck has been restored and is back in service, and will be on display at the city’s July 4th celebration at Lawson Creek Park. According to a press release, the truck was originally purchased in 1933 and had been in service for over 50 years before being retired in 1985. The firetruck suffered a transmission failure in June 2021, but the internal committee was able to find resources and oversee repairs, with the new transmission gears being built by Gear Enterprise in California. The truck is now ready to be used again during special events, parades, and firefighter funerals. “We’ve been lucky to have the City’s support in this project, right from the beginning,” said Glenn Kiely, Fire Engineer, who spearheaded the 12-person committee that repaired and restored the old ‘33. “The City gave us a budget to work from, and several firefighters bought tools and equipment with their own money – everyone was willing to help no matter what it took.”

 72.
VIDEO/PHOTOS: An Anne Arundel County Fire Department fire engine was destroyed after a blaze on Monday. Baltimore City firefighters helped extinguish the flames of a fire that began in the 500 block of Ensor Street around 2:00 p.m. on June 30. It’s unclear if anyone was injured in the fire, but the fire engine was destroyed. Anne Arundel County Fire Department officials said that its reserve truck was out of service and at a private contractor’s maintenance shop for repair work on Monday. That repair work required a type of cutting or welding, officials said. The fire started when fire personnel drove out of the shop. That’s when they realized that something had caught fire beneath the fire truck, according to authorities.

 100.
VIDEO: Firefighters have always risked their lives battling blazes. But these days, they’re fighting something even more dangerous, cancer. “The risk that nobody talks about is the cancer,” said Assistant Chief Travis Temarantz of the Wilkes-Barre City Fire Department. “The carcinogens, the smoke, the soot, the diesel exhaust, all of that contributes to our increased risk of cancer.” Cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters. The danger stems not only from exposure to carcinogens in smoke and soot but also from harmful chemicals like PFAS found in the very gear meant to protect them. “We’re seeing about one line-of-duty death related to occupational cancer every day,” explained Captain Matt Stephenson. “So it’s really starting to become more than just a buzzword. People are starting to understand that we’re having a serious issue in the fire service with cancer.”

 128.
VIDEO: Botetourt County Department of Fire and EMS is rolling out a new incentive program aimed at strengthening its volunteer ranks. Starting July 2nd, volunteers in Botetourt County will be eligible to earn between five and 20 dollars for every emergency call they run. Zach Beckner, Fire Chief at Troutville Fire Department, said, “It’s maximizing the incentive that they get for coming down to volunteer. Certainly, the incentive for any volunteer is we are out there serving the community without a paycheck.” The exact amount per call will depend on both their certifications and their responsibilities for that particular emergency. But on top of that money per call, volunteers can also earn up to 100 dollars in bonuses for meeting participation benchmarks and up to a thousand dollars for earning additional credentials. The Chief of Botetourt’s County Fire and EMS, Jason Ferguson, says the push for the program came after a decline in volunteers.

 156.
VIDEO: Oftentimes, taxpayers never truly know how their money is being utilized, but that’s changing as the city of Albany allocates thousands of School Zone Camera funds for firefighter gear updates. For the first time, WALB is getting a closer look at how these updates directly impact the men and women who protect and serve the city of Albany. In an active emergency, firefighters have a lot to think about, and worrying about the reliability of their gear should not be a concern. That’s why fire stations in Albany are upgrading turnout gear for all firefighters for nearly $500,000. Marcus Glass, the assistant fire chief for the Albany Fire Department, says current turnout gear has been in use for nearly a decade, and having new and improved gear is an essential part of a firefighter’s job effectiveness.

 184.
VIDEO: Dozens gathered Sunday for a memorial service in Copake, honoring EMS professionals who have died in the line of duty across the country, including the first active EMT in Columbia County to pass away, Stephen Walsh. “Compassion is possibly one of the most admired qualities a human can have,” said P.J. Keeler, EMS Coordinator of Columbia County. “It means you care about people, you have empathy, you are selfless, and you want to help others. Steve was that kind of person.” Stephen Walsh died on Nov. 16, 2024, in the line of duty. Claussen Raught Community Rescue Squad Operations Supervisor Peter J. Doty said Walsh was responding to a cardiac arrest call with his partner just moments before. “They came back to the building and Steve wasn’t feeling well and Steve then in turn went into cardiac arrest himself,” said Doty.

 212.
PHOTOS: The Fairfield Fire Department battled two blazes – one of which resulted in a power outage in parts of the township – on Monday. At approximately 10:26 a.m. on Monday, the Fairfield Fire Department received a call for downed wires on Daniel Road East. Units arrived within minutes with command reporting multiple utility poles down, with high-voltage wires stretched across the roadway and landing on several parked vehicles. One vehicle caught fire due to the energized wires and became fully involved, with the flames quickly spreading to two additional cars. Firefighters were unable to begin extinguishment until PSE&G confirmed that the wires were no longer live. After it was safe to proceed, crews contained the fire, limiting damage to the three involved vehicles and preventing further spread to others parked along the street. While Engine 2 remained on scene at Daniel Road East, Engine 3 responded to a separate call on Route 46.

 240.
The Howe Springs Fire Department announced the passing of one of their K9s. Piper, who was part of the Ignitable Liquids Detection team, passed away on Saturday “in the arms of his partner.” Chief Dillon and Piper began their journey as part of this team in August 2020. Some of their evidence finds have helped place arsonists in jail. Howe Springs Fire Department released this statement: “K9 Piper was family to all of the Howe Springs members and had become a friend to most everyone in our community. His companionship around the firehouse and professionalism on a fire scene will never be matched. He will be missed by all of us here at Howe Springs, and our continued prayers go out to Chief Dillon for his loss.” Florence County Emergency Management also released this statement: “We’re heartbroken to share the passing of K9 Piper with the Howe Springs Fire Department, a true four-legged hero who brought comfort, courage, and countless smiles.”

 268.
PHOTOS: Fire crews from multiple departments responded late Monday to a large house fire and explosions in the Bay City neighborhood off Long Neck Road. The Indian River, Lewes and Millsboro fire companies were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. June 30 to the 35000 block of 6th Street. According to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, the fire was fully involved when crews arrived, with flames threatening nearby homes. The Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and Sussex County Paramedics were also called to the scene. Dagsboro and Gumboro fire companies were put on standby and assigned to cover other calls. First arriving teams reported heavy fire and multiple explosions inside the home. Firefighters worked to knock down the flames, with additional hoses pulled as needed. Crews worked both inside and outside the burning structure to contain the fire and protect exposures on both sides of the house.
