VIDEO: The Augustus family wasn’t home when a lightning bolt struck their front yard, igniting a 15-foot-evergreen tree. An intense storm rolled over Northern Utah County, Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rains and crashes of thunder. “All of us jumped back. I admit I stepped further into the garage, not knowing if another bolt of lightning was going to hit,” William Thresher said.

Thresher owns Thresher Piano Movers. He was on a job moving a large safe, two houses over, when lightning struck. “Usually, you can count one-1,000, two-1,000 after lightning strikes, and you count your way up to the thunder. But they both happened at the same time,” Thresher said. “It was so loud. I looked outside the garage, and the neighbor’s tree was full of flames.”

Witnesses said smoke filled the air and almost blocked the Augustus’ home completely. Neighbors called 911 and alerted Augustus to the problem. He was working out of state in Colorado when the texts hit his phone. “Hopefully it’s not my house!! That’s what was going through my mind. When you see something like that, you just never know how devastating it could become. A couple of minutes can make a big difference,” Augustus said.

In those crucial moments, a teenage neighbor ran to get a hose from Augustus’ backyard. That teenage boy quickly got the hose into Thresher’s hands and turned on the water. “It was unbelievable how quickly the flames spread by the time I actually got the hose on the tree,” Thresher said. “It was crazy! These homes in Cedar Hills sit on 1/10th of an acre. They are very close to each other. How many other lives would that have impacted if this home had started on fire and spread to others?”

The Augustus family expressed sincere gratitude for those who rushed to action to put the fire out.

The Lafayette Fire Department has acquired a new life-saving device that first responders say will significantly improve their ability to help cardiac emergency patients. The Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System, known as LUCAS, is designed to administer automated chest compressions during medical emergencies. According to Stryker, the company that distributes the device, LUCAS provides over 60% increased blood flow to the brain compared to manual CPR at the push of a button.

The device delivers consistent chest compressions at a rate of 120 per minute, functioning like an extra set of hands during emergency situations. Ashton Prejean, an engineer with the Lafayette Fire Department for 11 years, said he’s already seeing positive results despite having the device for only a short time. “It saves a lot of time. It frees up a person,” Prejean said. “You don’t have to be right there doing compressions. You let the device do it and they say the success rate doubles when using it.” The Lafayette Fire Department received a grant of more than $20,000 from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to purchase the potentially life-saving equipment. The fire department said they hope to add more of these devices to their fleet in the future.

Fire crews from the U.S. Forest Service and Montana DNRC are working on a new wildfire southeast of Dillon.

The Deer Creek Fire is burning about 35 miles from town in the East Fork of the Blacktail. Officials estimate it at one acre, burning in grass, sage, and timber roughly two miles from the trailhead.

Firefighters hiked in to the fire and a helicopter provided water drops and aerial support. Crews focused on securing fire lines and removing hazard trees.

The fire is on Forest Service land but has the potential to move toward state land. Investigators believe it may have been started by a hunter’s fire, though the official cause has not yet been determined.

VIDEO: Oklahoma City firefighters were undergoing rigorous water rescue training at the Riverport facility, as highlighted by the show “Hearts of Heroes,” to prepare for emergencies where every second counts. Sheldon Yellen, CEO of Belfor Property Restoration and co-host of “Hearts of Heroes,” spoke about the challenges faced during water rescues. “Once you get down to that water, the energy of the water pushing you, and you lose control of yourself, swimming to the side takes all of the energy you’ve got,” Yellen said. Chief Greg Merrell of the Oklahoma City Fire Department described the training as “pretty rigorous.”

Merrell spoke of the importance of understanding water safety. “People are very complacent when it comes to water safety; they don’t understand the dangers that they face when they’re doing it, and they don’t respect the powerful and relentlessness of the water itself and how quickly things can turn and go bad in a hurry,” Merrell said.

“Hearts of Heroes,” which airs every weekend on KOCO 5, documents rescues from across the country and highlights the dedication of first responders. “The determination, the commitment, the dedication of these heroic first responders should never, ever be taken for granted,” Yellen said. Yellen shared experiences from other rescue operations, including swimming with sharks in Florida and rappelling from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

“Here we are today in Oklahoma City, showing what water resources could look like. And the commitment that it takes from our heroic first responders, it’s an honor to host a show like ‘Hearts of Heroes,'” he said. The show aims to honor the men and women of the Oklahoma City Fire Department, showcasing their successful rescues and dedication to saving lives.

A mobile home fire that spread to the surrounding area burnt about two acres Sunday evening in Forrest County. A post on the North Forrest Volunteer Fire Department’s Facebook page said that it responded to a call around 5:40 p.m. Sunday about a structure and grass fire at a residence on Jim Burch Road in the Glendale community.

Upon arrival, firefighters reported fire and smoke showing from the front of the mobile home as well as surrounding property, and it was spreading rapidly. NFVFD said the front of the mobile home sustained damage, but that it was contained to a small area. Approximately two acres of property was burnt, NFVFD said. NFVFD said the homeowner suffered minor burns to his hands and was checked out by EMS personnel on scene. He declined to be taken to the hospital. No further injuries were reported. NFVFD said an unattended outside fire was believed to have started the blaze.
