The blaze left a cat dead, officials say.

Crews responded to 1587 Broadway, shortly before 8 a.m., for reports of a fire. “Crews arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the house. Seven occupants, five cats, a rabbit and a couple snakes escaped from the burning home. One cat died in the fire,” according to Raynham Fire Chief Bryan LaCivita.

It took about 30 minutes for firefighters to put the fire out, officials say. The fire forced a portion of Broadway to be shut down. The road was reopened around 10:30 a.m., according to officials.

Two people were evaluated on scene by EMS. There were no injuries to any people or firefighters, according to the Raynham Fire Department.

“House fires like this should serve as vital reminders to homeowners to ensure their smoke alarms are functioning properly. Smoke alarms save lives and property and make all of our jobs a little bit easier,” Chief LaCivita said.

WFXT-TV FOX 25 Boston

The post Raynham fire forces numerous people, pets to escape, cat dies appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">423640</post-id>

Attic Fire Destroys House On Aurora’s Southwest Side

Nancy Valdez

Illinois Fire News

Illinois

PHOTOS: A house in the 400 block of Grant Place on Aurora's Southwest Side was destroyed early Thursday morning after a blaze broke out in the attic, fire officials said.

The post Attic Fire Destroys House On Aurora’s Southwest Side appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

PHOTOS: A house in the 400 block of Grant Place on Aurora’s Southwest Side was destroyed early Thursday morning after a blaze broke out in the attic, fire officials said. A total of 28 personnel were called to the 2.5-story house, which was converted into three units, at about 1:49 a.m. after an Aurora police officer spotted flames coming from the attic, according to a news release.

The officers helped evacuate two residents and their two dogs, but thick smoke prevented them from clearing the remaining units, officials said. Fire crews arrived to find fire showing from the second floor and attic at the rear of the house, leading to firefighters upgrading the alarm to bring more personnel to the scene.

Firefighters advanced hose lines to the second floor, completed searches and began vertical ventilation on the roof. Fire was concealed in several void spaces, requiring crews to remain on the scene “for an extended period” to conduct extensive overhaul, officials said.

Aurora Patch

The post Attic Fire Destroys House On Aurora’s Southwest Side appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">423578</post-id>

One person killed, second injured, following crash between vehicle, Metra train in Hainesville

Nancy Valdez

Illinois Fire News

Illinois

PHOTOS: One person was killed and a second person was injured after a Metra train crashed into a vehicle in Hainesville on Thursday afternoon.

The post One person killed, second injured, following crash between vehicle, Metra train in Hainesville appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

PHOTOS: One person was killed and a second person was injured after a Metra train crashed into a vehicle in Hainesville on Thursday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg of the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District said rescue personnel were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash involving a single vehicle and a train near the intersection of Belvidere Road and Centre Drive in Hainesville at about 12:06 p.m. Thursday.

VandeBerg said initial reports indicated a collision took place between a single passenger vehicle and a train on the tracks. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2019 to 2023 an average of 832 home fires began with holiday decorations each year.

These fires caused three civilian deaths, 28 injuries, and $17 million in property damage annually. Nearly half were started when decorations were placed too close to heat sources, while about one-third began with candles. The U.S. Fire Administration also reported that roughly 9,200 fires occur nationwide each year around Halloween.

“Simple safety steps can make a big difference in keeping your family and community safe,” said Illinois State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “Choose safe decorations, flame-resistant materials, and battery-operated candles instead of real flames to ensure a fun and fire-safe Halloween.”

Country Herald

The post Halloween Fire Warning: 832 Home Fires Linked to Decorations, State Officials Urge Safety appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">423580</post-id>

Chatham County Fire Department offers free training after battalion chief killed in container explosion

Megan Campbell

Georgia Fire News

Georgia

Southeast Region

Chatham County Fire will host free training on refrigerated container hazards in January 2026 following the line-of-duty death of a Greene County battalion chief.

The post Chatham County Fire Department offers free training after battalion chief killed in container explosion appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

Chatham County Fire will host free training on refrigerated container hazards in January 2026 following the line-of-duty death of a Greene County battalion chief in September of last year.

Battalion Chief Chris Eddy of Greene County Fire Rescue was killed Sept. 4, 2024, by an explosion from a refrigerated container carrying frozen chicken.

In a social media post on October 29, 2025, Chatham County Fire says the incident prompted Fire Chief Rodney Wiggins to develop specialized training focused on the tragedy and responder safety implications.

“This wasn’t just a tragic accident,” Wiggins said. “This was a wake-up call for all of us in emergency services.”

Wiggins said he developed the class to ensure Eddy’s sacrifice would not be in vain. Wildfires burn through nearly an estimated billion acres of land worldwide every year — that’s a little under half of the total area of the United States.

In an ever-changing world, sometimes your best option to battle flames on the ground, is to view from afar. Visible satellite imagery certainly helps track smoke plumes and the like — but what about finding the most likely hotspots before things heat up in the first place? Enter Dr. Chris Ruf at the University of Michigan, and their work on “CYGNSS.”

“[CYGNSS] doesn’t see the fires, it sees things that can burn, so it maps fire likelihood,” Dr. Ruf explains. “The goal there, when you have a lot of satellites in orbit, is you come back around to the same spot really often — every tens of minutes.”

CYGNSS has been on orbit for nearly a decade, at first intended to measure more accurate wind speeds over the ocean ahead of hurricanes, but now targeting the likelihood of wildfires. The Wolverine team worked on those sensors, and now the “Muon Space” company is helping to build upon that work, designing and building new satellites in the heart of Silicon Valley.

WTVG-TV ABC/CW 13 Toledo

The post New satellite constellation aims to help track wildfires appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">422560</post-id>

Two firefighters hurt in Virginia Beach fire

Megan Campbell

Virginia Fire News

Capital Region

Virginia

VIDEO: According to officials, crews were called to the 1600 block of Industrial Park Road at 3:34 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a commercial structure fire.

The post Two firefighters hurt in Virginia Beach fire appeared first on Daily Dispatch.

VIDEO: Two firefighters are hurt following an overnight fire in the Hilltop area of Virginia Beach.

According to officials, crews were called to the 1600 block of Industrial Park Road at 3:34 a.m. Wednesday for the report of a commercial structure fire.

According to Battalion Chief Jason Probst, crews were initially dispatched for the report of a brush fire, but when they arrived, they quickly determined they had a single-story fully-involved commercial structure fire on their hands.

Video provided by VBFD shows flames shooting from the roof.
