VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating a string of fires set by an arsonist in South Seattle. On Friday at 12:13 a.m. a suspect described as wearing dark clothing started setting fires starting at 22nd Ave S and South Hill Street, according to the SPD. Fires continued to be set southbound, with the last one set at South Walden Street and Wetmore Avenue South.

One of the fires involved flames on the porch of a home along South Mount Baker Boulevard, near Franklin High School. Fortunately, the fire did not spread into the home, and the Seattle Fire Department reported that everyone evacuated safely with no injuries.

Eight fires of varying sizes were set in about an hour. A King County deputy arrived with a police dog and tried to track the suspect, but no one was found. Some of the fires were set in dumpsters and a car. The SPD Arson and Bomb Squad was notified, and the Fire Marshal’s Office investigation unit, Marshal 5, was briefed.

Portland Fire and Rescue said an unattended candle caused an apartment fire early Friday morning in the Bridlemile neighborhood. Crews responded to the fire on Beaverton Hillsdale Highway around 12:15 a.m., where they found that the fire did not extend beyond one apartment unit on the fourth floor. “Crews found a room and contents fire in an extremely cluttered fourth floor apartment unit that was partially suppressed by the building’s sprinkler system,” officials said.

“Crews stretched a hose line to this unit and quickly extinguished the remainder of the fire.” No injuries were reported, but one person was evaluated for a possible panic attack,” according to PF&R. Several residents lost their homes on third floor apartments due to water damage. An investigator found that one smoke alarm in the apartment unit was missing and another was not operational. Fire crews warn that candles should never be left unattended.

Waterloo Fire Rescue had a busy morning as crews responded to two separate fires within hours. Neighbors played a crucial role in one of these incidents, helping to save lives.

One person is hospitalized after being trapped in a house fire that started just before 8:30 a.m. on Belleview Road. Officials said two people were home at the time. While one person escaped unharmed, the other was taken to the emergency room for further evaluation.

Firefighters credited neighbors for their quick action in alerting the residents and helping them escape in time.

“They were asleep, and the neighbors actually came over and knocked on the door to alert them of the fire,” said Kevin Lee, Battalion Chief at Waterloo Fire Rescue. “They had no idea what was going on.”

PHOTOS: Lightning struck a vacant townhouse in Mills on Wednesday night, according to initial reports. Fire Chief Wil Gay with the Mills Fire Department stated that he and his crew were dispatched to a fire in the Badger Lane area of Mills with initial reports of a lightning strike. “We were dispatched to a fire in a multi-unit dwelling,” Gay told Oil City News. “The RP [reporting party] actually did tell dispatch that they thought the building had got hit by lightning. We have investigators from our inter-agency task force doing the investigation right now.”

Gay said that there was damage to one of the townhouses in the area, but that the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. “I did talk to the building owner and he said all four of these units are currently unoccupied,” Gay said, “so it helps. I mean, yes, there’s damage. But the good thing is we don’t have any families displaced from it.”

Though the lightning only struck one building, there was some residual smoke in the townhouse next to it. “We had a second townhouse that did have some smoke in the attic space,” he said. “Not because there was a common firewall; it just typically finds its way to migrate. But there’s no damage [to the second townhouse]. We’re ventilating that one right now. The other two [townhouses] to the north are completely untouched.

Paulette M., a resident of Mills and a neighbor to the building that was struck, said that she heard the lightning before she saw anything. “We had a lightning strike and both the sound and the flash were instantaneous,” she said. “It was huge and loud — honestly, the loudest I’ve ever heard. About 15 minutes later, all the firetrucks started coming. When I looked out, you could actually see the flames and smoke coming out of the roof.”

Gay confirmed there were no injuries and that the fire had been contained. “We’re just going to make sure the fire’s out of the attic before we go home,” Gay said.

A hiker was rescued from a trail that is closed after rain and erosion led to significant damage, according to a city official at Camelback Mountain. Rescue teams responded to the Echo Canyon Trailhead at Camelback Mountain around 6:30 p.m. for reports of an injured hiker, the Phoenix Fire Department said. The crews found a man who told them he had been hiking down the mountain when he slipped, injuring his back.

Firefighters used a big wheel to safely take the man off the mountain. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The Echo Canyon trail is closed right now. Phoenix has experienced a significant amount of rainfall this month, but the extra precipitation has caused some erosion at Camelback Mountain, and some boulders are at risk of falling. The rainfall washed away sections of sand and gravel that were holding some boulders in place. The city’s parks department is now working with contractors to evaluate the boulders, which may need to be blasted away.

VIDEO: A beloved carousel in Nederland has reopened its doors to the community Thursday. This comes after 18 businesses were destroyed in a fire just feet away from it. During a community tragedy, this marks a glimmer of hope, as the Carousel of Happiness was untouched.

Melody Baumhover, the executive director at the Carousel of Happiness, said it has played a special role in the community since opening 15 years ago.

“We are also a space for grieving and a space for healing ceremonies, and a space for folks to just be able to hold the grief and the joy at the same time,” Baumhover told CBS Colorado.

On the day of the fire, Baumhover woke up to text messages from Scott Harrison. Harrison, the carousel carver, is also a veteran who fought in the Vietnam War. He bought the broken-down carousel originally built in 1910 and drove the pieces from Utah back to Nederland. He then spent over two decades carving each animal. Baumhover said Harrison was also one of the first people to respond to the fire.

“He started hooking up our hoses to our two water spigots on the outside of the building and was hosing down the building,” Baumhover explained. “Hosing down the ground outside of the building, just trying to keep things wet and cool for as long as possible.”

“It’s just a really, really special place, and has a lot of meaning to a lot of people. People come back from all over the world,” said Pat Hagberg, an employee of 12 years. “People just love it, and it’s just pure, simple joy.”

With up to 80,000 riders every year, not only has the carousel withstood the test of time, it’s also now withstood a windstorm and four fires. The first fire it was involved in was in 1925.

“This carousel has, as our mayor said, ‘has good karma,’ attached to it. But I think it’s more than karma,” Baumhover said. “We’re very lucky. When it was in Salt Lake City, it survived a lightning strike, which started a fire, a couple other fires, and a roller coaster falling on it.”

While the shopping center looks to be rebuilt, the Carousel of Happiness is spreading joy once again. Everyone is a kid at heart there, and age is just a number when it comes to taking a ride.

PHOTOS: Firefighters battled a raging house fire in Palos Verdes Estates on Friday morning. While on the way to another story, KTLA’s Rich Prickett in Sky5 spotted the flames consuming a residence near Via Sonoma around 7 a.m. and went live as firefighters arrived on scene.

According to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, crews initially responded to a 911 hang-up call at 2425 Via Sonoma around 6:55 a.m. When they arrived, firefighters found a fully involved single-story home and shifted into defensive mode as the blaze spread from a detached garage to the main structure.

During the live broadcast, Prickett described the home as “a total loss,” noting that flames were spreading dangerously close to the house next door. “It appeared to be the main portion of a home, or at least extending into another home here,” he said, adding that crews had just begun to get water on the fire as Sky5 arrived overhead.
