A fast-moving wildfire destroyed a historic lodge and dozens of other structures on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, forcing officials to close access to that area for the season, the park said Sunday.

The Grand Canyon Lodge, the only lodging inside the park at the North Rim, was consumed by the flames, park Superintendent Ed Keable told park residents, staff and others in a meeting Sunday morning. He said the visitor center, the gas station, a wastewater treatment plant, an administrative building and some employee housing were among the 50 to 80 structures lost. “Numerous” historic cabins in the area also were destroyed, the park said.

Two wildfires are burning at or near the North Rim, known as the White Sage Fire and the Dragon Bravo Fire. The latter is the one that impacted the lodge and other structures.

Started by lightning on July 4, the Dragon Bravo Fire was initially managed by authorities with a “confine and contain” strategy to clear fuel sources. They shifted to aggressive suppression a week later as it rapidly grew to 7.8 square miles because of hot temperatures, low humidity and strong wind gusts, fire officials said.

The White Sage Fire doubled in size on Sunday, growing from roughly 20,000 acres to 40,000, according to government website that tracks U.S. fires. No injuries have been reported.

Millions of people visit Grand Canyon National Park annually, with most going to the more popular South Rim. The North Rim is open seasonally. It was evacuated last Thursday because of wildfire, and will remain closed for the rest of the season, the park said in a statement.

Two large wildfires in Northern California, one near Shasta Lake, continue to burn amid extremely hot weather, sending smoke throughout the state. The Green Fire and the Orleans Complex Fire have burned a combined 15,800 acres as of Sunday morning.

The larger of the two is the Green Fire, which was started by a lightning strike on the night of July 1 and has burned nearly 10,000 acres. The fire is burning largely on the west side of Lake Shasta and has closed parts of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, including Potem Falls Trail and the Madrone and Chirpchatter campgrounds. Two “super scooper” aircraft are collecting water at the lake, and fire officials are asking boaters to be aware, as the aircraft need a mile of open water to conduct operations.

It was over 100 degrees and breezy on Saturday, forest service officials said in a Sunday morning update. The southern part of the fire has reached the Pit River, while the eastern edge crossed Flat Creek. There are some evacuation orders in effect, but the blaze is burning primarily in wildlands. The fire is 5% contained.

About three hours to the northwest, the Butler and Red fires have been combined into the Orleans Complex Fire. The main blaze started about 10 miles east of the town of Orleans on the evening of July 3; its cause is currently unknown. It’s burned nearly 6,000 acres in Del Norte and Siskiyou counties and is 0% contained. Evacuation orders are in effect, and Salmon River Road remains closed.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the 100s at both fire sites in the early part of the week. “Persistently high temperatures will keep fuels dry and increase potential fire danger,” Six Rivers National Forest officials said. “Individuals seeking relief from the heat by recreating in streams or rivers or in the forest need to be mindful of their vehicles’ condition or where they park. Roadside sparks or dried vegetation against the heated undercarriage of a vehicle could quickly result in a wildfire.”

Air quality has taken a hit across the northern part of the state due to wildfire smoke. Outside of the immediate fire zones, areas east of Sacramento are currently seeing the worst air quality. The Bay Area Air District extended an air quality advisory for the region through Monday. Parts of the North Bay and East Bay, as well as higher elevation areas, are likely to be most impacted. “Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, the smell of smoke is possible and air quality may become unhealthy at times on Sunday and Monday,” the air district said.

VIDEO/PHOTOS: The Bear Gulch Fire, which started on July 6 near Mount Rose in the Olympic National Forest, has grown to an estimated 443 acres with zero percent containment, officials said. The fire, attributed to human causes, has not damaged any structures, but crews are working diligently to prevent its spread. Firefighters have made progress in suppression efforts, particularly around the Mount Rose Trail system, which is being used as a barrier. Additional resources have been deployed to protect structures and reinforce containment strategies. Along NF Road 2400, crews are clearing brush and debris to strengthen fire breaks and improve access and escape routes. The Staircase Ranger Station area is also a focus, with vegetation being cleared to safeguard nearby buildings. However, NF Road 2400 remains closed due to the risk of falling debris, including large boulders and trees. The closure affects access to day-use areas and trailheads beyond mile marker 10.5.

PHOTOS: A mill in Tacoma is burning in a devastating fire that started late Sunday night. Johnson’s Millworks is along South Tacoma Way just north of Interstate 5. Photos captured by a KOMO News photographer showed large flames coming through the roof, and later the building was enveloped by fire. A Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) battalion chief said the fire has been difficult to fight because it’s burning below ground level, and firefighters are unable to access it. Windy conditions are also fueling the flames.

A brush fire along I-90 near the eastbound Oakes Road off-ramp through Cle Elum was slowing traffic on the freeway. Firefighters from Kittitas County Fire District 7 (KCFD7) received assistance from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) with a dozer and two aircraft. Additional resources, including tenders and support from neighboring fire districts, were requested to help contain the blaze. Fire crews have stopped forward progress, according to KCFD7. The blaze grew to nearly five acres.

VIDEO: A weekend of fire, smoke and lifesaving skills, but no emergency here. On Sunday, day two of Before the Bell training took place as dozens of volunteer firefighters suited up for the annual training weekend where live fire meets real preparation. “This is our third annual Before the Bell training, where we get all the volunteer fire departments together in Pulaski County. We also have some agencies from other counties that come in and just get some free training for the weekend,” Chief Dalton Shannon said. Shannon, president of the County Firefighters Association, said everything is hands-on, from understanding water flow to medic and leadership courses. Every drill is designed to mimic real danger. “Yesterday, we got to do a little door popping forceful entry. After we did that, we went over and did some little search and rescue trainings that we’re going to actually put to use today,” Captain Tyler Clanton with the Turtle Creek Fire Department said.

Over in North Little Rock, live fire training took place. Inside a tiered building, pallets and wood heated up to create a smoke-filled scenario. It gave crews the chance to face fire head-on. “We’re using small amounts of water to try and contain the fire long enough to make a rescue a simulated rescue. So they’re getting into an environment that a lot of them, a lot of these students, have not been in before,” Logan Hinkle, owner of Rural Fire Tactics LLC, said. Hinkle runs the operation. He said that this year, the training hosted about 60 trainees. Whether seasoned vets or rookies as young as 16, everyone is welcome. “We’re doing this for the first time in a controlled environment where everybody’s safe. We’re all learning and it helps us wherever we actually go to a fire. It’s not our first time popping a door, it’s our hunter,” Blake Hanney, an engineer with the Turtle Creek Fire Department, said.

It’s not only about gaining skills, but it’s also about giving back to the community. “We got to come out here and not only do training for us but take our knowledge that we learn and give it back to our community and also come out here and represent our fire department,” Clanton said.
