Newport News Fire Department is part of the Marine Incident Response Team, a cooperative among several surrounding agencies. David Garrett, a firefighter and EMT with Newport News, said the MIRT divers use two kinds of protective gear for cold water dives — a dry suit and a semi-dry suit. The dry suit features a rubber seal around the neck for deeper, colder rescues. Garrett described the thermocline, the divider between warmer surface water and the second layer of depth where more danger lurks.</p><h4 class="wp-block-heading">WAVY-TV NBC 10 Portsmouth</h4><div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-2 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex"><div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button" href="https://www.wavy.com/video/hampton-roads-has-specially-trained-rescuers-for-cold-water-plunges-like-deadly-one-thursday-in-dc/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" style="background-color:#b33232">View Full Story</a></div></div><p>The post <a href="https://dailydispatch.com/virginia-has-specially-trained-rescuers-for-cold-water-plunges-like-deadly-one-in-dc/">Virginia has specially-trained rescuers for cold water plunges like deadly one in DC</a> appeared first on <a href="https://dailydispatch.com">DailyDispatch.com</a>.</p>

The backstory: George Aren, Chief Chaplin for Detroit Fire Department, was committed to others as he helped them through hard times. When responding to a deadly plane crash scene near Detroit Metro Airport back in 1987, Aren knew Chaplain work was his calling. &#8220;The idea of me doing disaster work has only been mentioned to me on Friday morning and then Sunday night was flight 255 and that was my introduction into disaster,&#8221; said Aren. City council members voted to change that on Wednesday night, saying the way they’ve always done it has put the city hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Last month, a change to the employee handbook was introduced cutting the maximum number of sick hours that could be rolled over from 600 to 144, compelling several firefighters to speak up. “The ability to bank sick time isn’t just about taking a day off when we are under the weather,” said Franklin firefighter Cole McKnight during a council meeting on Dec. 16. “It’s about having the resources to fight back an illness caused by this job.”</p><h4 class="wp-block-heading">WXIN-TV FOX 59 Indianapolis</h4><div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-5 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex"><div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button" href="https://fox59.com/news/franklin-city-council-votes-to-change-sick-time-policy-after-initial-pushback-from-firefighters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener" style="background-color:#b33232">View Full Story</a></div></div><p>The post <a href="https://dailydispatch.com/city-council-in-indiana-votes-to-change-sick-time-policy-after-initial-pushback-from-firefighters/">City council in Indiana votes to change sick time policy after initial pushback from firefighters</a> appeared first on <a href="https://dailydispatch.com">DailyDispatch.com</a>.</p>

Los Angeles officials were preparing for that prospect even as a small number of residents were allowed to return to the devastated Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas and firefighters quickly controlled small blazes that broke out. Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive order Tuesday to expedite cleanup efforts in burn areas and mitigate the environmental impacts of fire-related pollutants</p><h4 class="wp-block-heading">NPR.org</h4><div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-9 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex"><div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button" href="https://www.npr.org/2025/01/22/g-s1-44181/fire-risk-and-strong-winds-southern-california" style="background-color:#b33232">View Full Story</a></div></div><p></p><p>The post <a href="https://dailydispatch.com/fire-risk-and-strong-winds-continue-in-southern-california-with-rain-on-the-horizon/">Fire risk and strong winds continue in Southern California with rain on the horizon</a> appeared first on <a href="https://dailydispatch.com">DailyDispatch.com</a>.</p>

The result is a &#8220;quad-demic&#8221; of illness hitting simultaneously in what&#8217;s shaping up to be a more active virus season than last year. And the big picture shows the simultaneous threats are straining some hospitals to capacity and leading administrators to recommend masking among staff, ABC News reports. The surge follows what was a slow start to the respiratory virus season.</p><h4 class="wp-block-heading">AXIOS</h4><div class="wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-10 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex"><div class="wp-block-button"><a class="wp-block-button__link has-white-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button" href="https://www.axios.com/2025/01/22/virus-season-roars-back-quad-demic" style="background-color:#b33232">View Full Story</a></div></div><p></p><p>The post <a href="https://dailydispatch.com/virus-season-roars-back-with-quad-demic-of-illness/">Virus season roars back with ‘quad-demic’ of illness</a> appeared first on <a href="https://dailydispatch.com">DailyDispatch.com</a>.</p>
