20.
The Bills head back their Lake Erie football neighbors for wide receiver help.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane made headlines on Monday, April 28 when he defended the current wide receiver room using some choice language. Just a few hours after that spicy on-air interview, One Bills Drive reportedly hosted veteran free-agent wide receiver Elijah Moore, an interesting development that followed the team failing to land a rookie wide receiver until their last pick in Round 7 of the 2025 NFL Draft.

 21.
Now, two days after that visit to Orchard Park, NY, Elijah Moore and the Bills have agreed to terms on a one-year contract. The deal, as reported by Jordan Schultz, is worth up to $5 million for the 2025 NFL season.

 22.
Moore is just 25 years old, but will now join his third team in just five seasons. Carrying a well-traveled NFL resume, Moore brings a lot of potential despite failing to live up to expectations so far. It’s worth considering Moore’s production may have been limited due to menagerie of quarterbacks he’s played with in four seasons.

 23.
Here’s every QB Moore has played with in his career:

 24.

 25.
Zach Wilson (New York Jets)

 26.
Mike White (New York Jets)

 27.
Joe Flacco (Cleveland Browns)

 28.
Deshaun Watson (Cleveland Browns)

 29.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson (Cleveland Browns)

 30.
P.J. Walker (Cleveland Browns)

 31.
Jeff Driskel (Cleveland Browns)

 32.
Jameis Winston (Cleveland Browns)

 33.
Bailey Zappe (Cleveland Browns)

 34.

 35.
That’s not exactly a favorable just-desserts of NFL talent-meets-ability for Moore. Even the big names in Watson, Flacco, and Winston were far past their primes when they met Moore.

 36.
Moore was a second-round pick (34th overall) of the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft, but lasted just two seasons before being traded to the Browns.

 37.
During the 2024 NFL season, Moore made 61 catches for 538 yards and one touchdown. Time will tell us more about where an how Moore may fit in with offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s system. In 2024, Moore played 44% of his snaps in the slot, which is obviously the role firmly held down by wide receiver Khalil Shakir.

 38.
Elijah Moore was previously inked to the Bills by several scouts ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, but it never came to fruition. In 2025, One Bills Drive is banking on Moore’s potential shining through by playing along side NFL MVP quarterback Josh Allen. Now the team will hope the third team’s a charm for Moore, with Allen helping to revitalize his once-promising career.

 58.
 59.
The son of a former Bills defensive back also has a connection with cornerbacks coach Jamahle Addae.

One of the Buffalo Bills’ 2025 undrafted free agents (UDFA) to keep an eye on is cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. He could make some noise this summer, so let’s take a look at what Porter brings to the gridiron.

 60.
Porter is a South Florida native and graduate of American Heritage High School, a south Florida football powerhouse. He began his college career at West Virginia University before transferring to the University of Miami. Porter impressed as a redshirt freshman at West Virginia in 2021 and after transferring to Miami he became a two-year starter for the Hurricanes.

 61.
During his college career, Porter totaled 108 tackles, 18 pass defended — 10 over the last two seasons — and one interception. He worked closely with Jamahle Addae (current Bills cornerbacks coach) during his time at WVU and Miami. He’s also the son of former NFL defensive back Daryl Porter Sr., who spent time with the Bills between 1998 and 2000.

 62.
Standing 5’9 ½” and weighing 185 pounds, Porter has primarily lined up as a boundary corner — typically on the right side. While his size is considered ordinary for the position, and he posted a modest 4.65-second 40-yard dash at the University of Miami Pro Day, Porter consistently made up for those limitations with sharp instincts, physical play, and a natural feel for timing his attacks at the catch point to break up passes.

 63.
One of Porter’s standout traits is his aggressiveness as a tackler. He isn’t just willing in run support. Porter thrives there, diagnosing plays quickly and delivering technically sound hits.

 64.
His ability to mirror receivers early in routes is another strength, although he can struggle against the NFL’s fastest receivers downfield due to his average speed.

 65.
Measurables:

 66.

 67.
Height: 5’9 ½”

 68.
Weight: 185 pounds

 69.
40-yard dash: 4.65 seconds (UM Pro Day)

 70.

 71.
Strengths:

 72.

 73.

 74. Press-man coverage: Excels at getting physical at the line of scrimmage and mirroring receivers through routes.

 75.

 76. Run support: Aggressive and technically sound tackler who isn’t afraid to mix it up against the run.

 77.

 78. Ball skills: Displays strong timing and hand placement to disrupt passes at the point of catch.

 79.

 80. Blitzing ability: Has shown consistency and effectiveness when tasked with corner blitz assignments.

 81.

 82.
Weaknesses:

 83.

 84.

 85. Size: Slightly undersized for a boundary corner, particularly against taller, elite WRs.

 86.

 87. Speed: Serviceable but not standout; his 4.65-second 40 time limits his ability to consistently stay with fast receivers on deep routes.

 88.

 89.
While Daryl Porter may not come with first-round size or stopwatch speed, he offers a proven skill set that translates to several key defensive roles the Bills need: depth at boundary corner, his work ethic in the run game, and a contributor on special teams.

 90.
His connection with Addae and his background suggests he’ll have a strong understanding of expectations if given an opportunity in Buffalo. As an aggressive run defender who excels in press-man cover and with added special teams ability, Porter could quietly carve out a valuable role with the Bills if given the chance.

 108.

 109.
 110.
I’m sensing a theme…

What was the biggest issue with the Buffalo Bills in 2024?

 111.
The quarterback was the MVP. The offensive line was great. The running backs were fantastic.

 112.
The wide receivers had their concerning moments in games, but didn’t stop the team from fielding the best offense in franchise history. The tight ends underperformed relative to expectations coming into Dalton Kincaid’s second year, but was anybody screaming for additions there?

 113.
Most people would say that defense was the most significant (not only) issue with the Bills last season, but let’s go deeper than that. Where specifically on defense? What triggered the obscenities at the television and the pulling of whatever hair you have left?

 114.
Was it the run defense? No, it was likely the pass defense, and the metrics back up your frustration. Of all the DVOA metrics Buffalo had in 2024 (passing DVOA, rushing DVOA, pass defense DVOA, and rush defense DVOA), pass defense ranked the worst for the team, at a decidedly middling 15th in the NFL.

 115.
“So by all means, let’s invest the most resources in the defense this offseason,” the team may have said, clearly reflected by their draft capital and guaranteed money expenditures, outlined by Joe Dibiase of WGR550:

 116.

 117.

 118.
Bills commitments on new players this offseason...

Offense:
- 32 draft value points
- $10M total for 2025

Defense:
- 1460 draft value points
- $33M total for 2025
— Tweets by Sneaky Joe (@SneakyJoeSports) April 28, 2025
 119.

 120.
 121.
 122.

 123.
But let’s go one step even deeper than that. Buffalo held opposing teams to the fourth-longest average third down in the NFL, yet allowed one of the highest amounts of total first downs of any defense in the league.

 124.
It wasn’t just defense.
It wasn’t just pass defense.
It wasn’t just third-down passing defense.

 125.
It was 3rd & Long passing defense.

 126.
How many times did you make a joke about it to your friends or on social media? It was colloquially expected that the Bills would get an opposing team into 3rd & Long and then give up the first down — over and over again.

 127.
I thought about this phenomenon a lot watching the early parts of the 2025 NFL Draft. I have no idea how specifically intentional this thematic throughline was in its creation, but it is certainly noticeable in its digestion.

 128.
Cornerback Maxwell Hairston, Defensive tackle T.J. Sanders, edge rusher Landon Jackson, and defensive tackle Deone Walker all have opportunities to make the team better. They have opportunities to make the defense better. They have opportunities to make the pass defense better. But even most specifically, they have the opportunity to make the 3rd & Long passing defense better.

 129.
Maxwell Hairston excels from off-coverage where he can use his aggressiveness, explosion, and athleticism to close on balls in the air. When are you most likely to play off coverage (with a safety over the top to allow aggressiveness from your corners)? Third and long.

 130.
T.J. Sanders is a mature pass rusher, someone who general manager Brandon Beane openly discussed playing next to Ed Oliver on passing downs. Which obvious passing downs? Third and long.

 131.
What do you need from your edge rushers on 3rd & Long to help your interior defensive linemen get home? Compression and power generated from the edge by long-limbed, heavy-handed rushers. Landon Jackson is a long-limbed, heavy-handed compression player.

 132.
And wouldn’t it be nice to have a depth player for those interior pass rushers that you feel can come in and provide a spark to the rush like Jordan Phillips did during his 10-sack season in 2019? Someone who doesn’t necessarily have to play a lot of snaps for you, but needs to bring the juice when he’s in. Funny you should ask because there was a defensive tackle in this class who was frequently compared to Jordan Phillips by the name of Deone Walker.

 133.
It’s not even just the first part of the draft class. Look at the top four Bills free-agency contracts. One of them was on offense (Joshua Palmer). The other was a pass rusher with injury issues they’ll attempt to manage by limiting his snaps to the bigger money downs (like 3rd & Long) in Joey Bosa. Then there’s an interior pass rusher in Larry Ogunjobi, and a hybrid player whose value is highly touted as being such that it allows a team to better-disguise coverages in Michael Hoecht. When do you want to use your best disguises? Third and long to get off the field.

 134.
If the four main portions of scrimmage football are passing the ball, stopping the pass, running the ball, and stopping the run, here are the quick-and-dirty, done-to-make-a-point meaningful resource allocations the team made this offseason:

 135.
Stopping the pass = 80%
Stopping the run = 10%
Passing the ball = 9%
Running the ball = 1% (Jackson Hawes shout out)

 136.
Obviously all those defensive players mentioned above will play snaps against the run too. But all of them major in helping the team stop the pass and, specifically, help on obvious passing downs that last season the team was good at getting into and bad at getting out of.

 137.
Hopefully we’ll all have a bit more hair at this time next year.

 138.

 139.
...and that’s the way the cookie crumbles. I’m Bruce Nolan with Buffalo Rumblings. 189.
Did the selection of Maxwell Hairston receive unanimous approval from Rumblings readers?

The Buffalo Bills entered the 2025 NFL Draft with a goal in mind to improve the team’s defense from front to back, and to do so by selecting the best player on their board when it they were on the clock in reach round. General manager Brandon Beane understood the assignment well and — instead of reaching for a defensive tackle who didn’t fit their board in Round 1 thanks a to a major run on D-linemen — he hit what many are calling a home run by selecting cornerback Maxwell Hairston.

 190.
Immediately following the pick of Hairston, FanDuel Sportsbook and we here at Buffalo Rumblings wanted to gauge your immediate thoughts on his landing with the Bills. 191.
But what about you, and the rest of Bills Country? It should come as no surprise that 60% of fans gave the selection of Maxwell Hairston an “A.” A third (33%) of voters gave the pick a “B,” while grades below that accounted for just 7% of votes.

 257.
 258.
Bills hold steady at running back despite James Cook’s contract uncertainty

The 2025 NFL Draft came and went this past weekend without the Buffalo Bills adding a single running back to their roster. It’s a move that surprised many given the uncertainty surrounding James Cook’s future with the team.

 259.
Cook, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, is scheduled to earn $5.271 million in base salary this season, along with a $75,000 workout bonus. The 2022 second-round pick has developed into Buffalo’s lead back over the past two seasons, posting career highs in rushing yards and total touchdowns in 2024. However, despite his growing role in the offense, questions remain about the Bills’ long-term plans at the position — and at what cost.

 260.
The Bills’ decision not to draft a running back this year surprised many, especially considering Cook’s recent absence from voluntary offseason workouts. His no-show at OTAs has fueled more speculation that he’s unhappy with his contract and wants and extension secured prior to heading into the 2025 NFL season. Bills general manager Brandon Beane has publicly downplayed any concerns.

 261.

“I mean, it’s voluntary,” [Beane said when asked about Cook’s absence.] “We could all assume he’s not here because he’s unhappy with his contract or whatever, but that’s not fair. He hasn’t told me that. No one has told me that he said that. It doesn’t mean he’s not here next week or the week after. He’ll be ready to go though.”

 262.
Beane has remained consistent throughout the offseason when questioned about Cook. He also indicated there had been no trade inquiries regarding Cook prior to or during th 2025 NFL Draft, reinforcing that Buffalo intends to move forward with him as their starter in 2025.

 263.
Early on during the current offseason, Cook’s contract became an interesting topic of conversation when he and his older brother, running back Dalvin Cook, both used social media to suggest lofty contract expectations. Earlier this offseason, James retweeted a post referencing a $15 million annual salary, while Dalvin later retweeted a figure of $20 million per year after Saquon Barkley signed his new deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Whether that was for his brother’s benefit or congratulating Saquon Barkley is speculative at best.

 264.
While the fanbase loves Cook, and confidence in him runs high, most league insiders peg James Cook’s true market value between $10 and $14 million average annual per year. Still putting him in the top 5-7 RBs in terms of AAV. But should he be paid in the same tier as Barkley or Christian McCaffrey? These guys are workhorses who are on the field for the majority of the offensive snaps. Saquon Barkley played 74% of the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive snaps in the 2024 season while sitting the last game of the season. Christian McCaffrey played 76% of the snaps in 2023 season (injured for the majority of 2024). In comparison, James Cook played in approximately 48% of Buffalo’s offensive snaps.

 265.
Cook’s explosive playmaking ability has certainly made him a weapon within the Bills’ offense, but the position’s overall market makes it unlikely he will reach the top of the running back pay scale — at least not in Buffalo. Cook will also turn 26 years old by the start of the 2025 season, and while he has limited tread compared to backs with heavier early career usage, running back production often declines sharply after 28. Committing long-term dollars —would require careful consideration and some additional risk.

 266.
For now, the Bills appear content to let Cook play out the final year of his rookie deal, keeping the door open for either an extension later this offseason or a possible franchise tag decision in 2026 if he has another breakout season. The question is whether Cook will let his contractÿ concerns get in the way of his 2025 season. If so, Buffalo has a capable backup in Ty Johnson and second-year RB Ray Davis — but no one is pretending that either of them are in the same tier as Cook.

 267.
With the draft complete and Cook still very much part of the roster, attention now turns to whether he’ll report for mandatory minicamp in June or if he will hold out. His attendance — or lack thereof — could give a clearer signal of where negotiations stand heading into the summer months. Either way, it’s clear the Bills aren’t rushing to make a move.

 294.
The goal of the game is to guess the correct Bills player with the help of up to five clues. We’ll mix in BOTH ACTIVE AND RETIRED PLAYERS. It won’t be easy to figure it out in one or two guesses, but some of you might be able to nail it.

 295.
After you correctly guess the player, you can click “Share Results” to share how you did down in the comments and on social media. We won’t go into other details about the game as we’d like your feedback on it. How it plays, what you think of it, the difficulty level, and anything else you can think of that will help us improve this game.
