85.
Roster moves

 86.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

 87.

 88.

 89. Recalled from Triple-A Reno: RHP Cristian Mena

 90.

 91. Optioned to Reno following Saturday’s game: RHP Scott McGough

 92.

 93.
With Ryne Nelson moving back to the bullpen (and I must admit I’m not entirely on board with that decision), but likely out of commission for a bit after his extended outing last night, I imagine Mena will be used as long relief for now. He has been a starter in Reno (4.84 ERA), and we did see him once earlier this year, working 3.2 scoreless inning after Eduardo Rodriguez blew up (no, the other time. No, the other other time) - that was the infamous 14-11 loss to the Dodgers. With the day off tomorrow, we won’t need a fifth starter for a bit, so might as well use the extra spot for another bullpen arm until the roster place is required.

 94.
The D-backs have now lost consecutive series at home to teams with losing records, which is not good. They’re now only at .500 (10-10) against teams below .500, and are a dismal 1-9 over their last ten. That’s tied with the Athletics and Rockies as worst in the majors. Not good, and I’m finding it harder to remain optimistic. It’s not as if we’re crippled by injuries right now, unless you think Eduardo Rodriguez is our savior. We’ll see if Arizona can at least avoid the sweep this afternoon. I won’t be about to see it, as Mrs. S and I are off for lunch at Casino Arizona followed by an Abba tribute band. So we’re going to have a good time, something D-backs performances haven’t provided much of late!

 95.
[Editorial note] I’m off back to Britain tomorrow, so Gameday Threads might be a little spartan through a week Tuesday. We’ll be eight hours ahead of Arizona time, so if line-ups aren’t available by 3pm or so in AZ, I won’t be including them. Indeed, any meaningful information will be dependent on the wifi situation. Which should be fine for the first few days when we’re in London. But I then head home to Scotland where my father (who turns 90 in October) is keeper of the Internet, and the house has thick stone walls. The builders inexplicably did not take the need for 5G signals into account when it went up in 1815. So, who can say? tl;dr - There will be GDTs, but I make no guarantees about their contents!

 121.
“You fall down 10 runs before you even come in the dugout, that’s a lot to overcome,” Lovullo said. “When you’re down 11-0 in the bottom of the second inning, most teams will find a way to cruise to get through the game. But this team’s gritty and they showed me a lot today.”

 182.

 183.
 184.

 185.
 186.

 187.
 188.
This one was over before the first out was recorded. Seriously.

Wow. I, and I suspect all of us, would have expected better from Brandon Pfaadt. Or anyone, really, that we’d pulled in off the street to pitch for us. But no. We got what we got tonight, and despite some of us maybe getting our hopes up late in the ballgame, this one was done from the beginning. Literally.

 189.
I’m not going to write this up in excruciating detail, because frankly I can’t think of many things tonight I would be less enthusiastic about doing, and also because it’s not necessary. Anyone who reads this knows we’ve been sucking lately, a lot, though mainly it’s been the bullpen that has been the dumpster fire. But no, tonight Pfaadt decided to let them off the hook, and to do so by setting the Diamondbacks up to accomplish something that, according to MLB.com, hasn’t been done in 77 years. He hit the leadoff batter, gave up three straight hits after that, hit another batter, then gave up three more hits, and was pulled from the game without recording a single out.

 190.
Scott McGough came in to relieve him, and I bet you can imagine how that went: another hit, another hit-by-pitch, and then another hit, before the first out of the ballgame was finally recorded, on a strikeout of Nathaniel Lowe, the Nationals’ first baseman. Nine runs were already in at that point, and while the Grime Dog did manage to end the inning eventually, he gave up a walk and another single, and allowed a tenth run to score. So yay. 10-0 Washington, before we’d even come to the plate.

 191.
McGough also came out to start the third, but walked the first two batters he faced before getting yanked. One of those runners scored, to make things 11-0 Washington. So that was fun.

 192.
That’s far more than the margin of victory right there. So. Game over, basically, even though there were still eight and a half more innings to play.

 193.
Some Good Things that Happened

 194.

 195.
The Diamondbacks offense, after lying there stunned and ostensibly dead in the road for the first eleven plate appearances against Washington starter Michael Soroka, showed a bit of life as Geraldo Perdomo broke up the perfect game with a single to right in the bottom of the fourth, and Josh Naylor followed with a ball into the seats in right center to break up the shutout. 11-2 Washington
 196.

 197.
The offense continued to chip away, up to a point (hence the hope I alluded to at the top), hanging what wound up being a five-run sixth on Soroka and his mid-inning replacement, a gentleman named Jackson Rutledge, thanks to a Josh Naylor double, a Eugenio Suarez single, a Pavin Smith triple, a Gabi Moreno single, and finally Randal Grichuk’s fourth home run of the year. 11-7 Washington
 198.

 199.
Aside from Scott McGough, the bullpen was pretty excellent, actually. To be fair, it was garbage time pretty much from the get-go, but as the offense kept trying to get us back into the ballgame, it felt less and less like it was actually garbage time, so. Jeff Brigham pitched two scoreless innings, Ryne Nelson put up zeroes for the next four, Kendall Graveman put up another in the top of the eighth, and Shelby Miller (remember him? He closes for us, when there’s an opportunity for him to do so) pitched a scoreless ninth. The bullpen, oddly, was nails.

 200.

 201.
The Terrible Things that also Happened

 202.

 203.
Corbin Carroll’s slumpy slumpishness continued, and it seemed to be contagious, as he went 0 for 5, and Ketel Marte (who was batting after him) went 0 for 4. So the top two in our lineup contributed, well, pretty much absolutely nothing.

 204.
We had a runner reach base in the seventh, and could have loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but our offense had once again dried up, and we failed to get any more runs across.

 205.
Part of the problem in the eighth was that, on a Grichuk single to left, third base coach Shaun Larkin sent Pavin Smith to try to score from second, and he was thrown out at the plate. At least it wasn’t Geno getting thrown out at home this time, but still. Shaun Larkin sucks, and if there’s any justice he should be filing his unemployment claim right around the same time that pitching coach Brian Kaplan files his. Which, if there’s any justice, should be last Wednesday.

 206.
Scott McGough. ‘Nuff said.

 207.
Lest we forget, here’s Brandon Pfaadt’s pitching line for the evening: 0 IP, 6 H, 8 ER, 2 HBP, 31 pitches thrown. Sorry.

 208.

 209.
Win Probability, courtesy of FanGraphs
 210.

 212.
 213.

 214.
And yeah, we’re not gonna do the whole good/bad/ugly performers tonight, because when one team takes a 10-0 lead before the other team has even had a turn at bat, it basically breaks the FanGraphs algorithm for the team that’s on the wrong side of the score deficit.

 215.
Basically, it was entirely Pfaadt’s fault, as, along with the pitching line above, he wound up sporting a -45.4% WPA. If that seems a bit low to you, well, it does to me too. That algorithm is weird.

 216.
Oddly, though perhaps unsurprisingly, it was a very active and well-attended Gameday Thread tonight, despite a whole bunch of people loudly proclaiming that they were noping out at the end of the first inning. I’m glad they didn’t....I appreciated the company, and the often hilarious non-baseball tangents that people went haring off on. There’s 486 comments at time of writing, and a bunch that went Sedona Red. The hands-down people’s choice was our Fearless Leader declaring our first swearing-permitted GDT of the year, but I’m giving the Comment of the Game to VW Beetle, who quite inspiringly refused to nope out:

 219.

 220.
Thanks, Beetle. You will always be Bluto to me.

 221.
Anyway. If you don’t have anything better to do, are determined to continue making psychologically injurous life choices, enjoy having clear and unassailable justifications for your Sunday afternoon day drinking, or are simply doing the Masochism Tango, stop by and join us for the rubber match of this disappointing series, as we once more try to stave off a sweep. Corbin Burnes goes for us, because I guess he’s back on “regular rest” now or some damn thing. Mitchell Parker goes for Washington. 1:10PM AZ time.

 222.
As always, thanks for reading. And as always, go Diamondbacks!

 304.

 305.

 306.
A May to forget comes to an end, with the latest game we’ll see at Chase Field this year. I hope you all brought your caffeinated beverages and are ready for a game which could, conceivably, go past... ten o’clock at night! Of course, those of us with long memories will find that adorably early. In particular, the contest near the end of the 2019 season, which went for 19 innings and finished after 1:30 am the following morning. I still get PTSD flashbacks about having to recap that one. We shall not see its like again, and from a recapper’s perspective, am perfectly fine with that. But this start time - because the game is on FS1 - has made for a long day without baseball.

 307.
Mind you, given the way the team has played, it’s probably for the best. The D-backs go into this game with an 11-16 record for the month. One final defeat this evening, would seal the team’s first month with 17 losses since September 2022 when they also went 11-17. There’s no prize for guessing the main cause: a bullpen which has gone 2-8 this month, with a 6.75 ERA. That’s currently tied for fifth worst in franchise history, and there hasn’t been a month this bad in fifteen years. I almost want to see another meltdown tonight, just to see if it can move up to fourth. The three above that though... Yeah, they’re probably out of reach. Here are the details of the top 10.

 308.

 309.
 310.

 311.
In case you’re wondering, eight bullpen losses in a month has actually been surpassed a number of times, and quite recently too. It happened twice during the 2022 season, our relievers going 3-9 in July, and then 4-10 at the end of the season (two of those losses were technically in October though). Interestingly, on their way into the post-season, the D-backs bullpen in 2001 also went 3-9 with a 5.40 ERA. Greg Swindell had four of those losses, and Byung-Hyun Kim three. On the other end, it’s interesting the genuinely terrible 2005 bullpen only lost two games in August, despite an ERA north of eight. We’ll see where the 2025 model sits at the end of the night.

 375.
 376.
They say you gotta laugh to keep from crying. It’s getting harder to do.

Game Summary

 377.
The Diamondbacks lost their 3rd straight game and 8th in their last 9 games in an affair that was more than winnable if the Diamondbacks had any sort of “little things right” in them. Tonight’s loss can’t be blamed solely on the bullpen. It was a thorough team loss. The starting pitching wasn’t good. The late-game hitting wasn’t good. The defense wasn’t good (again). It took a team effort to lose this game tonight and that’s what they did.

 378.
Merrill’s start was cut short after 5 inning and 6 runs scored, but Ketel Marte’s costly error in the first inning set this game off on a wacky trajectory that sapped Merrill of at least one inning and was directly responsible for 2 Nats’ runs. The Diamondbacks defensive miscues were also responsible for a run scoring on Jalen Beeks in the 7th, when he gave up a high pop fly to the warning track in left center field, but Lourdes Gurriel looked like he took a bad route AND like he couldn’t run faster than a slow jog which led to the ball bouncing off the warning track and into the stands for a leadoff double. That run would later come around to score the Nationals’ 9th run of the game on a single through a drawn in infield. Three runs that can be directly blamed on the lack of passable defense, and it’s only by the grace of God that it wasn’t a fourth run when Josh Naylor and Ryan Thompson allowed the leadoff batter to reach on a “single” when they ran into each other trying to race to the bag.

 379.
Now I will preface this next part by saying 7 runs is a good night at the ballpark and should be enough to win a ballgame, but if you’re going to give them 3 runs with your poor defense, scoring 7 runs isn’t as much of a clear path to victory. The first and third innings were filled with good, old fashioned Diamondbacks baseball where we strung hits together and kept handing the bat off to the next man in line. But after the third inning, that all came to a screeching halt. Thanks to those big innings early, the D-backs were able to chase the Nats’ starter after 5 innings and get into that bullpen (the only bullpen in the NL with a lower ERA than ours). Old friend Andrew Chafin pitched the 6th and was able to strand a 1-out double. Then the leadoff man reached in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings via walk or HBP, and only Corbin (thanks to him stealing second on his own before he could be sabotaged by one of the men behind him) would come around to score with 2 outs in the 9th. If our defense is going to be this bad, our offense has to be better than that.

 380.
Even though the bullpen took over in a tie game and gave up 3 runs, I don’t blame them for the loss at all. Morillo pitched the sixth and gave up 2, but if Merrill’s pitch count didn’t get blown up in the 1st, Morillo likely wouldn’t have been on the mound in the 6th. Beeks was charged with an earned run, but he was a clear victim of poor defense. The bullpen has been plenty bad, but they’re not to blame for tonight’s outcome. Tonight, I blame the other 8 men.

 389.
Outside the Box Score

 390.

 391.
The defensive mishaps continued to rear their heads at the beginning of this game. With 2 outs and 15 pitches, Merrill Kelly got an easy ground ball to Domo who paused for a moment before deciding to go the short way to Ketel Marte covering second base. The flip was perfectly in stride and on target, but Ketel let it clank off his glove and inning continued. 19 pitches later, the second out was finally recorded, but 2 Washington runs were across.

 392.
That third out in the top of the first wasn’t a gimme either. Geno Suarez got a routine grounder and spiked the throw across the diamond, but thankfully, Naylor made the scoop and recorded the out.

 393.
Corbin Carroll’s batting average has been on a precipitous decline over the last couple weeks, but he was able to get a lucky base hit when he got a check swing double down the third base line.

 394.
Josh Naylor with 2 pretty defensive plays now through the first 2 innings. Naylor made a diving stab on a hard grounder down the line and was able to recover and flip to a sprinting Merrill Kelly for the second out of the inning.

 395.
Merrill could blame his first inning troubles on defensive miscues, but the third inning was all on him. First four hitters all reached and scored courtesy a pair of 400+ foot homers, a walk and a single. Merrill limited the damage after that, but his pitch count continued to climb at an alarming rate, finishing the third with 73 pitches and his second 2-run deficit of the evening.

 396.
The Answerbacks returned in the bottom of the third, tying up the score at 6 runs apiece through 3, but the good guys nearly had their 2-run lead back through 3 innings if not for some home run robbery by the Nationals right fielder. Gabi Moreno scorched a flyable to deep right field with a runner on, but Daylen Lile made an awkward but effective backwards leap into the fence and brought the ball back into play for the third out of the inning.

 397.
Juan Morillo was the first call to the bullpen in this one was Juan Morillo, and it went as well as the rest of our bullpen outings have gone recently. Morillo found himself in a bases loaded jam without allowing a hit. Three walks around a groundout and strikeout led to Nathaniel Lowe coming up and delivering a ringing single to score 2. The Nats TOOTBLANd into their 3rd out on the play after the first 2 runs scored or this inning might’ve got even uglier.

 398.
Jalen Beeks was the next man up out of the pen and the first batter he faced (a lefty) drilled a ball to the warning track in left center, but it was hanging up long enough that it should’ve been caught. Gurriel took a pretty terrible route to the ball and tried to correct but it was too late and the ball ended up bouncing over the wall for a ground rule double. That runner would eventually come around to score and add a third run of insurance for the Nats.

 399.
Geno Suarez came up with 1 out and runners on the corners in the 7th. Swinging at the first pitch, he poked a jam shot to the 2nd baseman who tagged out Naylor himself then threw on to first to complete the double play and end the briefly lived scoring threat.

 400.
The third bullpen arm to enter this game for the Diamondbacks was Ryan Thompson. He was met with the now all-too-familiar defensive buffoonery, as well. He got a swinging bunt down to first base which Naylor fielded cleanly and Thompson was in position at first to receive a toss but Naylor decided to take it himself and - no I’m not making this up - ran into Ryan Thompson, preventing him from reaching first base and recording an easy out! Thompson was at least able to strand his runner, but the defensive slippage on display in this game is galling.

 401.
The late-game gaffes didn’t belong solely to the defensive side of the ball. In the 7th and 8th innings, the Diamondbacks got leadoff walks, cardinal sins for pitchers that typically lead to good things for the side who earns them. Both leadoff runners did get into scoring position eventually in their inning, but neither would score.

 402.

 403.
Player of the Game

 404.
Slim pickings tonight, so I’ll just go with the man who happened to lead the team in WPA tonight (also the only one who didn’t play any defense tonight), Pavin Smith. He started off 2-for-2 with both hits on breaking balls against a tough starter in Jake Irvin, but his late performance lessened the shine of his early impact. Still, hopefully this gives Pavin some confidence against these breaking pitches that have been bedeviling him for most of this season.

 405.
Comment of the Game

 406.
A total of 323 comments in the GDT at time of publishing. This comment didn’t end up with the most Recs on the night, but I feel it was the best descriptor of this game:

 410.
Coming Up

 411.
The D-backs face the Nationals in the second game of this series tomorrow at 7:10pm Arizona time. Brandon Pfaadt will be on the bump in our bid to snap this 3 game skid, and he will be opposed by righty Michael Soroka who is 1-3 with a 5.61 ERA.

 497.
Roster moves

 498.
The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

 499.

 500.

 501. Selected from Triple-A Reno: RHP Jeff Brigham (No. 34)

 502.

 503. Signed as a Major League free agent: INF Ildemaro Vargas (No. 6)

 504.

 505. Optioned to Reno: RHP Kevin Ginkel

 506.

 507. Optioned to Reno following Wednesday’s game: INF Jordan Lawlar

 508.

 509. Designated for assignment: LHP Joe Mantiply

 510.

 511.
Certainly a lot to unpack here. Brigham is probably the least-known name, but has five seasons of major-league experience, mostly in Miami. The 33-year-old signed for Arizona as a free-agent in December, and has a 5.23 ERA over 17 appearances for Reno: bear in mind, the PCL average ERA is 5.15. Vargas returns for his FOURTH spell with the club, having previously signed in 2015, 2021 and earlier this year, before exercising an opt-out clause to escape that minor-league contract, only to re-sign a major-league deal. He came closest in his career to a full-time job last season, appearing 95 times for the Nationals, with an OPS+ of 75 - in line with his career figure of 77.

 512.
The departures are not unexpected either. Reports indicate that Ginkel needs to figure out his fastball control, and Lawlar’s struggles with breaking pitches have been very well documented. We may not have seen the last of either man this year, but they will both certainly be motivated to improve on performances which offer a lot of scope for that. Finally, Mantiply loses his 40-man roster spot, less than two years after starting Game 4 of the 2023 World Series against the Rangers. But this year has been a real struggle for Joe, opposing batters hitting .481 against him. A BABIP of .512 is a factor in his 15.83 ERA - but so is allowing five home-runs in only 58 batters faced.

 513.
After a series against Pittsburgh which started very promisingly, before collapsing into severe disappointment, the D-backs will seek to get back in the groove against the Nationals. Hopefully the new blood can help the bullpen stave off what has become an almost nightly parade of concern, and if the offense can go back to geting hits with runners in scoring position, that would also be helpful. Starting pitcher Merrill Kelly might be the person tonight about whom I have least concern, but after the events of late, I’m not going to make any predictions about what may come to pass! As long as we come out on the winning side, that’s all I’m really bothered about.

 535.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are expected to call up veteran reliever Jeff Brigham as they search for bullpen stability, reports Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.

 536.
The D-backs sent down reliever Kevin Ginkel to Triple-A Reno, per Gambadoro.

 537.
Ginkel heads to the minors after posting a 12.60 ERA and 2.10 WHIP in 13 games played (10 innings pitched). He struck out 15 and walked seven during that span.

 538.
Brigham spent 2023 with the New York Mets and pitched for the Miami Marlins from 2018-22.

 540.
The Diamondbacks are optioning infielder Jordan Lawlar to Triple-A Reno, reports John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Phoenix. Infielder Ildemaro Vargas will be taking Lawlar’s roster spot. Vargas triggered an opt-out from his minor league deal and was released earlier this week. Gambadoro adds that Vargas will be re-signed to a major league deal. Arizona has an open 40-man roster spot at the moment, though it will be full once Vargas is officially added.

 542.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, after dropping two of three to the Pirates, will begin a three-game set with the Washington Nationals at Chase Field Friday, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m.

 543.
Arizona is 27-29, and struggling heavily. They’ve lost their last three series, and are 3-7 in their past 10 matchups. Meanwhile, the Nationals are 26-30, but have played some good baseball of late, winning eight of their last 10 games, including a series win over the Seattle Mariners.

Sports) Mariners SS J.P. Crawford goes ballistic after ejection over wrong third-strike call vs. Nationals

 546.
In the sixth inning of the Mariners’ 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals, Crawford was rung up on a called third strike from starting pitcher Mackenzie Gore with runners on the corners, no outs and Seattle down 2-0. The pitch was outside to the naked eye, but Fletcher still saw it as in the zone.

 547.
Immediately after he was punched out, Crawford could be heard yelling “That’s not a strike man!” at Fletcher, who responded by ejecting him. Crawford remained on the field to get his money’s worth until Mariners manager Dan Wilson stepped in and pushed him back to the dugout.

 548.
(The Sporting News) Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm makes third base announcement after injury

 549.
Chisholm opened the year playing second base. But since Chisholm has been out with his oblique injury, D.J. LeMahieu has held down that spot admirably.

 550.
The Yankees still have a black hole at the hot corner, and Chisholm might fill it.

 551.
“(Manager Aaron Boone) gave me the choice, but he told me he really wanted me at third base,” Chisholm told media Thursday after his rehab appearance with the Somerset Patriots. “I’m a team guy. I’m here to win a ring.”

 552.
[Ed. Note] this situation stands in stark contrast to the Rafael Devers situation. Personally, I think this is a much more appropriate response rather than straight up refusing, publicly, to play a position

 553.
(AP) MLB players’ families grapple with rising online threats as sports betting surges

 554.
Soon after Lance McCullers Jr.’s family received online death threats following a tough start by the Houston Astros’ pitcher, his 5-year-old daughter, Ava, overheard wife Kara talking on the phone about it.

 555.
What followed was a painful conversation between McCullers and his little girl.

 556.
“She asked me when I came home: ‘Daddy like what is threats? Who wants to hurt us? Who wants to hurt me?’” McCullers told The Associated Press on Wednesday. “So, those conversations are tough to deal with.”

 557.
McCullers is one of two MLB pitchers whose families have received online death threats this month as internet abuse of players and their families is on the rise. Boston reliever Liam Hendriks took to social media soon after the incident with McCullers to call out people who were threatening his wife’s life and directing “vile” comments at him.

 558.
[Ed. Note] I have some suggestions on how to handle this, but I don’t think they would be appreciated on a family site

 559.
(CBS News) MLB steps into women’s sports with launch of pro softball league

 560.
The partnership with the Athletes Unlimited Softball League marks MLB’s first major investment in women’s professional sports.

 561.
Manfred said the timing felt right for the investment.

 562.
“We’ve been very engaged in the softball space as part of our youth participation programs. And the growing popularity in women’s sports motivated us to look around,” Manfred said. “We looked at startups, we looked at making an investment, and we thought AUSL was a great fit for us.”
