Game Summary

What a game! This had all the makings of a patented 2025 Diamondbacks blown lead loss, but, on this night, the feisty Snakes played some sparkling defense late to secure a huge win. Even if the Diamondbacks don’t make the playoffs this year, games like this are why we love watching baseball. The team showed heart, hustle, and a flair for the dramatic. That’s what we love to see as fans!

Ryne Nelson bounced back from his wobbly last couple outings to toss a Quality Start, and it felt like he was control from the middle of the second inning on. After a mound visit from everyone’s favorite pitching coach during a rough start to the second, Nelly set down 11 straight Reds before getting tagged for a triple by the exciting Elly de la Cruz. After the triple, Ryne retired the final 3 hitters he faced. The bullpen ended up tossing 5 innings on the night, only allowing 1 earned run plus allowing the Manfred Man to score in the 10th, but thanks in large part to some spectacular defense, that was it. Corbin Carroll got the Serpientes out of the 10th by making a phenomenal throw from medium depth right field to the plate and nailing the Reds runner attempting to score what likely would have been the winning run. In the 11th, the infield provided the sparkling defense with an unconventional 6-5 DP to end the inning. The Reds’ zombie runner was at third with 1 out, but a soft line drive hit directly at Geraldo Perdomo followed by his quick toss to Blaze retreating to third and no-look tagging the base with his foot while making the catch kept the Reds off the board and allowed magic to happen in the bottom half of the inning.

The offense looked locked in early, scoring 4 runs off a tough customer in Zack Littell and chasing him from the game after only 4 innings. Gabi Moreno got a huge 3-run bomb into left in his first game back, and the Snakes were getting traffic on the base paths, but after the bullpen came in, the Snakes only mustered 2 hits and a walk over the final 5 innings of regulation, striking out 7 times! Fortunately, situational hitting returned in extras. Domo bunted Alek to third to start the 10th, then Ketel, who was having a really rough night offensively, worked a 13-pitch at bat before blooping a single into shallow right to tie the game up. Then in the 11th, Corbin started at second and Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., August’s hottest hitter on the planet, roped line drive into center on the second pitch of the inning to score Corbin and walk it off!

What. A. Game.

Outside the Box Score

Gabi Moreno returned to the field for the first time in a couple months after breaking his throwing hand. Thankfully, it looks like he learned his lesson and was catching with his throwing hand behind his back tonight instead of in front.

TJ Friedl led off the game with a bouncing single just outside the reach of Ketel at second. Gavin Lux hit a slow roller toward the hole between Ketel and Pavin. Ketel was able to get to this one and made a gutsy decision to throw to second and try and cut down the speedy Friedl. Ketel executed perfectly and he was able to get the throw perfectly in time for the first out of the game.

Corbin’s double in the bottom of the first was, of course, a ‘hustle’ double. It was a ringing line drive (110 mph!) past the second baseman and into right-center field. The right fielder was able to cut it off before it could get to the wall, but it didn’t matter as Corbin was hustling out of the box and made it in to second without a play.

Lourdes Gurriel continued his RBI hot streak (24 in his last 20 games if I heard the broadcast correctly) with a sacrifice fly to score Gerry from third. What was impressive about it was he started the at bat in an 0-2 hole and swinging sillily at some bad pitches. He battled his way back to a 2-2 count by fouling off some tough pitches before finally getting a ball he could lift to the outfield.

The D-Backs gave the lead back to the Reds in the second on a rare defensive mental error by Domo. Geraldo received the ball pretty deep into the outfield as the cutoff man on a double to the wall in center. Instead of eating the ball, he threw all the way home and wasn’t all that close to getting the runner scoring. On the throw, the hitter was able to advance an extra 90 feet to third with only one out. Given that situation, the Snakes brought the infield in and the next hitter was able to slap a grounder past the drawn in infielders to score the runner from third. Had they kept the original runner at second, it’s likely they could have got out of the inning with only allowing the one run instead of two.

The Serpientes got ADC to third with only one out in the second but could not get him in. Alek popped up on the infield for out #2 before Perdomo drew a walk to load the bases for Ketel. Unfortunately, Ketel went down swinging at a nasty sweeper to end the inning. On the bright side, the D-Backs forced Zack Littell to throw 49 pitches through 2 innings.

Gabi’s first game back off the IL came with fireworks. After the Diamondbacks got runners on via walk (a rarity for Littell) and catcher’s interference, Moreno cashed them in with a blast into the left field bleachers for a 3-run homer.

Ryne Nelson set down 11 straight Reds after giving up 2 runs in the second inning. His streak was snapped on an Elly de la Cruz triple into right that not even a streaking Corbin Carroll could stop from rolling to the wall.

Blaze has been in a slump over the last week, but he hit the ball hard the first 3 times he was up tonight. The exit velocities on his plate appearances were 104, 101, and 104. Only one resulted in a hit.

Ketel Marte had a rough go of it at the plate tonight, but he made a snazzy play to retire the leadoff man in the 8th inning. TJ Friedl dropped a surprise bunt in between Pavin and Backhus, the pitcher at the time, and Ketel made his now patented glove-scoop-toss to first and got the out.

Kyle Backhus got chased after facing the minimum three batters and getting only one out and allowing the game tying run in the eighth, but Juan Morillo came in and cleaned up the mess promptly by inducing an inning ending double play off a 100mph sinker.

On the first play in extra innings, the Reds tried to bunt the Manfred Man to third. It wasn’t a great bunt and John Curtiss made a very athletic play to dive and stop it from getting past him, holding the runner at second. Unfortunately, Curtiss hopped up and rushed the throw to first and it sailed wide of Ketel (covering first) bounced down the wall to Corbin in right, allowing the runner to score and the hitter to get to second.

Corbin Carroll’s improvement in throwing from the outfield this year has been the most mind-blowing thing I’ve seen from him this year, and that’s saying a lot. In the 10th inning, he tracked down a fly ball in foul territory. He was still moving to his left as he caught it but was able to quickly plant and fired a strike to Gabi at the plate who then made an athletic play himself by diving backwards and tagging out the Reds’ runner before he reached home plate. What. A. Play.

Not to be outdone, the infield turned their own sparkling double play to end the top of the 11th inning. With one out and a runner on third, Elly de la Cruz hit a soft liner directly at drawn in Geraldo Perdomo. Blaze Alexander was able to react quickly and start running toward third as Domo made the catch. Domo then quickly shoved his throw to the retreating Blaze who somehow found third base without looking and doubled off TJ Friedl.

Comment of the Game

Not a very active Friday night in the GDT, at least not until the extra innings started. At time of publishing, only 189 comments and very few rec’d comments to choose from. While a couple comments did get more recs than this one, I believe this one from ChefAZ summed up the evening best:

Coming Up

The Diamondbacks face the Reds in the second game of this important series tomorrow with a 5:10pm first pitch Arizona time. Nabil Crismatt will be on the hill for the Snakes and he will be opposed by lefty Andrew Abbott who is 8-3 with a sparkling 2.28 ERA. I don’t know how that game could top this, but I’m excited to find out how!

Roster moves

The Arizona Diamondbacks made the following roster moves. The D-backs’ 40-man roster is at 40.

Reinstated from the 60-day injured list: C Gabriel Moreno (right hand contusion)

Designated for assignment: C Jose Herrera

Not sure if this will be the end of Herrera’s time in Arizona. It’s possible he may end up going unclaimed on waivers, and be re-assigned to Reno. It’d be kind of cool if Herrera showed up in 2026, because there are only a handful of catchers to have played for the D-backs in five different seasons: Miguel Montero most obviously (9 seasons), and also Chris Snyder (7), Carson Kelly, Rod Barajas and Damian Miller (all 5). This has actually been Jose’s busiest year, and the first time has has appeared in fifty games (57 at time of the DFA). Though with an OPS+ of 52, and a bWAR below replacement each season to date, you can understand why the team opted to go with Brian McCann and/or Adrian Del Castillo for the rest of the season.

Another change on the field – albeit just outside the lines. Nick Piecoro Tweeted that Tim Bogar will be taking over from Shaun Larkin, after the latter was relieved of his duties as third-base coach a couple of days ago. Larkin will be staying on as infield coach, so the dugout will be a little more crowded going forward, I guess. Bogart hasn’t been far off though, being a player development staff advisor this season, after managing the Double-A Amarillo Sod Poodles in 2024, following his move to the Arizona organization from Washington. Speaking (loosely) of which, he was also, briefly, the manager of the Texas Rangers back in 2014, taking over for the final 22 games of the season after the Ron Washington resigned from the position.

I’m hoping the D-backs will get hold of Zack Littell tonight, because he has been very vulnerable to the long-ball this year. Indeed, he is one of the few (three, to be exact) pitchers in the majors this year to have allowed more home-runs than Zac Gallen. At 27, Littell is one ahead, and trails only Jake Irvin of the Nationals (29). Be nice to add a few more to his total this evening. Not many times a qualified pitcher has allowed more HR than BB. At 27/24, Littell is only the 26th pitcher in baseball history to achieve the feat. A couple of D-backs have though: Mike Leake in 2019, albeit more for Seattle then Arizona (though here, he allowed 15 HR and 8 BB!). And back in 1998, Brian Anderson sent 39 hitters trotting around the bases, with only 24 jogging to first.

If after losing three out of four to the Rockies you were expecting that a series against an actual winning team would go poorly, you could probably be forgiven. I can’t say that I went into it with high expectations, and yet, here we are on the other side of a series win against the Guardians. Not much changed for the Diamondbacks as a result. They’re still four games under .500. They’re still 5.5 games behind the Mets for the final Wild Card spot. It was still good to see some fight from the team, and maybe give some hope that we’ll see some solid baseball as we head towards the Winter of Discontent.

They face another contender next. The Cincinnati Reds come to Phoenix just a single loss behind the Mets. With that in mind, the Diamondbacks will have their best chance to play spoiler yet, even better than when they took down the struggling Rangers. This is a Reds team that is in the thick of it, and the Diamondbacks can spend three games mucking that up. It wouldn’t hurt how their final standing position will look either, for what it’s worth.

Game 1 — 8/22, 6:40 PM — Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.58 ERA, 121 ERA+, 1.07 WHIP) vs. Zack Littell (9-8, 3.52 ERA, 118 ERA+, 1.11 WHIP)

Nelson has been on a bit of a rough streak recently. After four straight starts of two earned runs or fewer, he gave up five in Texas and four in Colorado. Of course, the obvious caveat of Coors is there, but that’s still two subpar starts in a row for the otherwise consistent and reliable Nelson. An interesting thing to note is that he did not walk a batter in either of those starts. I’m not sure if that makes it better or worse, if I’m being honest.

Littell just joined the Reds, coming from the Tampa Bay Rays. This will be his fourth start, with mixed results in the first three. In his first start, he made a great first impression, going seven innings of three hit, one run ball. However, in his second start, he didn’t make it out of the fifth and gave up four runs. Third time around he flipped it back again and went six innings of four hits and one run. That back and forth has been fairly normal for him this season, but more often than not he’s landed on that one run side of the coin. We’ll see if the Diamondbacks offense can handle him.

Game 2 — 8/23, 5:10 PM — Nabil Crismatt (0-0, 1.80 ERA, 258 ERA+, 0.80 WHIP) vs. Andrew Abbott (8-3, 2.28 ERA, 199 ERA+, 1.07 WHIP)

Crismatt made his season debut against the Rockies, throwing an impressive five innings where he gave up just a single run scored before the bullpen imploded and lost us the game. He’s bounced around the league for the last few years, including a two inning relief appearance for the Diamondbacks back in 2023. In 2024 he made five appearances with the Dodgers, but nothing seems to be stopping him from finishing the season in the Diamondbacks rotation at this point.

Andrew Abbott is having a phenomenal year. That 199 ERA+ is the best in all of baseball right now. His more than a full run worse than his ERA, so perhaps a little luck, but you don’t get that good without luck, so I wouldn’t read to much into it. Fifteen of his 22 starts have seen him give up one earned run or fewer with essentially six innings pitched per start on average. He is going to be a problem for the Diamondbacks offense, but he’s not untouchable. Milwaukee, Philly, and the Cubs have all gotten to him for more than four earned runs this season, so it is possible.

Game 3 — 8/24, 1:10 PM — Zac Gallen (9-13, 5.28 ERA, 82 ERA+, 1.33 WHIP) vs. Brady Singer (11-9, 4.18 ERA, 109 ERA+, 1.30 WHIP)

Gallen has been better of late. For the month of July, he had a 5.10 ERA. In August, that number has plummeted 3.52. That’s skewed by a one run outing against the Rockies at Chase, but even when you take that into consideration, his worst outing was three runs in six innings. That would have been his third best in July. Baby steps.

Singer is in his first season with the Reds, having spent the first five years of his career with Kansas City. He’s pitched well enough, pretty much in line with his career norms. Only real thing that stands out from a perusal of his BR page is that his walks are up, something that the Diamondbacks will hopefully be able to take advantage of.

Conclusion

It’s going to be a tough series. None of the three pitchers could be considered bad, and Abbott is one of the best in baseball right now. Nelson gives us a good shot in Game 1, and if Gallen continues to be his improved version of himself, that’s a decent start there. Not holding much hope though. Diamondbacks lose 2-1

In fact, Skenes would have been eliminated from contention with a 7-9 mark, despite the fact that his team is bad and this is an individual award.

There has been an undercurrent of discontent within the Arizona fanbase about the style of offense the team has utilized this year. I often see complaints on the D-Backs’ subreddit, comments on articles or game day threads here, and even on other platforms about the move away from the “chaos baseball” style that characterized the upstart 2023 squad. These complaints have even invaded the television broadcast as one of Bob Brenly’s keys to the game yesterday was a return to the playstyle. In my mind, this playstyle emphasized aggressive baserunning, stealing bases whenever possible, and utilizing contact to get on base. And for the record, it’s not hard to see why it’s such a popular phenomenon – myself included. Who among us doesn’t want to see world-class athletes demonstrate their raw athleticism and ability? There’s certainly some credence to the complaints as the eye test alone makes it seem like the team is less aggressive on the base paths. But my parents always taught me to approach broad claims with some skepticism. So let’s dive into the data and see how accurate that eye test actually is.

Let’s start at the top and look first at stolen bases where the evidence is pretty definitive. If we use 2023 as our baseline (when the rule changes made stealing significantly more accessible), then there’s an undeniable downward trend for the D-Backs’ would-be base stealers. That season, they were second in the majors with 166 swiped bags as a team, trailing just the Cincinnati Reds who stole an eye-popping 190 bases on the season. It also marked the season when Corbin Carroll managed to steal an absurd 54 bases on the year, putting him in third behind Ronald Acuna Jr and Esteury Ruiz across all of baseball. The following season, the team dropped down to 119 stolen bags, just under the league average of 121, and they’ve stolen just 92 so far this season with 38 games left to play. When we visualize that trend over the past three years, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist or professional data analyst to recognize the downward trend we can see below.

But as I always like to mention, the context around these pieces of data are just as valuable – if not more so – than the piece itself. In this case, we’d like to know how the team’s stolen base count compares to their peers (i.e. the other teams). When we have this kind of context, we can see that the D-Backs might actually just be part of a larger trend where teams are de-emphasizing stolen bases because of the inherent risks involved in limiting scoring opportunities when those attempts are unsuccessful. And there has been a barely-noticeable dip in success rate for stolen bases since 2023 from 80% to 77% across the league. That’s a small enough difference that it could be statistical noise or a fluke, but it is worth considering that pitchers and their position players are adjusting to the new rules and are catching those base thieves more often. Regardless, there’s been an incontrovertible move away from stolen bases by the D-Backs over these past three seasons.

Of course, stolen bases are just one aspect in the “chaos baseball” playbook that we’ve previously seen. It also included a more aggressive approach on the basepaths more generally – including taking an extra base when possible. As the name would suggest, there’s a metric dedicated to measuring when a runner takes an additional base on a play (i.e. reaching second base on a single or third on a double) as well as measuring how other baserunners advance on the batted ball. If we follow a similar mental path for this extra base taken metric as the stolen base numbers from above, we arrive at the following visualization which also shows a slight decrease in the team’s success in advancing an additional base. However, this metric has some flaws that should be noted. One, there is some subjectivity involved as official scorers are the ones that determine what’s a single, double, etc. Second, there are no situational splits so all hits are evaluated similarly which might penalize baserunners that don’t try to advance in two-out situations. Even with these flaws, it gives us another data point that shows some credence to the complaints.

As it turns out, there is certainly some evidence to support the fans’ frustrations with the lack of aggressive baserunning this year. Some of the results we’ve seen above might stem from the incomplete nature of this season and we’ll need to check these numbers once it’s concluded. It’s also possible that we are still seeing some statistical noise in the data given the ridiculously small sample size in play here. But I think there’s also a larger conversation to be had on whether or not the “chaos ball” style was actually more effective. And for that discussion, we may need another article.

There’s no denying, 2025 has been a very disappointing season for the Diamondbacks and their fans. Coming off an 89-win season, adding major signings like Corbin Burnes, and with the largest payroll in franchise history, expectations were high. But a poor May (a record of 11-17) and dreadful July (9-16) crushed expectations of challenging for a playoff spot. The team was instead sellers at the trade deadline, clearing the decks of three highly significant pieces in Merrill Kelly, Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor, and effectively putting a stake through the campaign. It’s been a long time since there was such a large, negative gap between hopes and reality. But who is responsible?

We asked you that question earlier in the week, giving five options to chose from, as the person or group who were most responsible for the situation. Before we get to the results, let’s quickly go through each of those and see what could have been done better.

The owners

While the team payroll was pushed to record levels, the opening day figure still ranked outside the top ten for 2025. It didn’t help that $22.5 million of that was committed to Jordan Montgomery, whose signing Ken Kendrick accepted responsibility, saying, “If anyone wants to blame anyone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, you’re talking to the guy that should be blamed. Because I brought it to [the front office’s] attention. I pushed for it.” It has also been noted how the team was suddenly able to find money late in the winter to sign Montgomery: if that money had been available to GM Mike Hazen at the beginning of the winter, it might have been spent in a different and more successful direction.

The General Manager

I just realized I omitted the GM from the poll – certainly a mistake. For consistent success has eluded Hazen – the team has yet to manage consecutive seasons with 85 or more wins, during his tenure. Overall, Arizona is a mediocre 18th in win percentage since Hazen took over at 646-676. The struggles in assembling a pitching staff, in particular the D-backs bullpen, have been well documented: the team ranks only ahead of the Rockies by pitching fWAR during the Hazen era. This season is precious little better, Arizona currently sitting 28th in this metric. There have been a slew of high-profile, big contract signings which have failed to live up to expectations, and almost no production on the mound for the Diamondbacks has come through their farm system.

The manager

It feels like calls for Torey Lovullo’s dismissing have been almost a weekly occurrence over the past few years, but does it seem they have become louder of late? As well as the usual complaints about bullpen management, line-up construction and days off, there has been pointed criticism of his apparent ignorance of Corbin Burnes’s pitching approach, and his handling of star player Ketel Marte. Obviously, leading his team to the World Series less than two years ago cannot be denied as an achievement. But the narrow failure to reach the playoffs last season, followed up by the greater deficit almost certain in 2025, seems to have more people wondering if a change in approach might be better going forward.

The coaches

We already saw the first victim, with third-base coach Shaun Larkin relieved of those particular duties just yesterday (though he will remain as an infield coach). Lovullo said he had noticed the players losing confidence in Larkin’s decisions. I suspect he may not be the last. Particular scrutiny has been applied to pitching coach Brian Kaplan, who took over from veteran Brent Strom this season. However, the team’s ERA has shown almost no improvement from the figure that got Strom fired: 4.63 last year, compared to 4.55 in 2025. The ongoing struggles of Zac Gallen and Brandon Pfaadt, both of whom have seen their ERAs increase on last season, don’t bode well for Kaplan, and bullpen coach Wellington Cepeda doesn’t appear to have solved many issues either.

The players

Of course, in the end, it all comes down to the players performing, or not performing. On the pitching side, it’s perhaps telling that nobody currently in the organization has a higher bWAR than Corbin Burnes – who last pitched on June 1st. Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson are the only active pitchers worth more than 0.7 bWAR, while Gallen and Eduardo Rodriguez have combined for 266.2 innings of replacement level pitching by bWAR. As last year, the hitting has generally got it done, but – despite his ninth-inning heroics yesterday – Lourdes Gurriel Jr has barely been better than replacement-level, and well short of value for his $14 million. Jake McCarthy was unutterably dreadful early: while he has been much better since his recall, he’s still in negative territory.

Injuries

The Diamondbacks currently have eleven players on the injured list: ten pitchers, plus Gabriel Moreno (and it might become all pitchers, as soon as tomorrow). It has been an epidemic across all of baseball, no question. However, in terms of total salary on the IL this season, Spotrac has Arizona fifth most impacted. Please do not ask me how they came up with this figure. But this ranking also doesn’t take into account the payroll of the teams either: of the four teams ahead of us, three (Yankees, Dodgers and Mets) had significantly higher Opening Day payrolls, so had more room to withstand losses, and the fourth (the Angels) was almost the same, under $5m less than the D-backs. Bad luck, or bad medical care? That’s a lot harder to tell from the outside.

The results

As mentioned, I forgot to include the GM as an option, but here are how the votes split across the five options presented in the poll.

Almost, but not quite, a majority of respondents felt that injuries are the major culprit for the D-backs’ season circling the drain. The losses for the vast majority of the season of Burnes, and our two closers in Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk, certainly had an impact. The fact our active saves leader on the staff is currently Andrew Saalfrank with two, tells you all you need to know about the bullpen churn. But Lovullo certainly does not escape his share of criticism either, and one wonders what might happen this winter. Results over the remaining six weeks might decide: will the team come together for Torey, or fall apart? We shall see: since the trade deadline, it feels like we have had a little bit of both!

The Arizona Diamondbacks closed out their three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians with two wins and one loss, a set that featured resilient pitching, late-game heroics, and a long overdue coaching change. The results offered a mix of optimism and lingering concerns as the team continues to chase relevance in the Wild Card race.

Game One: Missed Opportunities

Arizona opened the series with a frustrating 3–1 loss. Zac Gallen delivered six innings of work but allowed a pair of home runs. The Diamondbacks’ offense struggled to produce in key moments, going just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Geraldo Perdomo continued his steady run at the plate, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the missed chances.

Game Two: Bats Break Through

The second game provided a much-needed offensive spark. Eduardo Rodriguez gave Arizona nearly seven innings, keeping the team close until the lineup came alive. Jake McCarthy connected for an opposite-field home run, while Corbin Carroll added two triples to set a new franchise single-season record. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single in the late innings, and the bullpen held firm to secure a 6–4 victory.

Game Three: Walk-Off Celebration

The finale turned into one of Arizona’s most exciting wins of the season. Pfaadt again impressed, working seven innings and limiting Cleveland to two runs. In the ninth, Gurriel Jr. tied the game with a solo home run, setting up a dramatic finish. In extra innings, Alek Thomas laid down a key bunt, and Adrian Del Castillo followed with a sharp single to right field, giving the Diamondbacks a 2–1 walk-off victory. It was Del Castillo’s second career walk-off hit and a moment that electrified Chase Field.

Key Performers

Gurriel Jr. emerged as the offensive catalyst, driving in three runs in the second game and homering in the ninth inning of the finale. His production has been critical during the stretch run, and his strong season could influence a significant off-season decision regarding his contract. Carroll continued to showcase his unique blend of speed and power, becoming just the second player since 1940 to record multiple two-triple games in a season. Perdomo added timely hitting once again, particularly with runners in scoring position, while Pfaadt and E-Rod’s strong outings helped stabilize the rotation.

Carroll’s Historic Triples Push and Power Surge

Corbin Carroll continued to etch his name into franchise history during the series against Cleveland. On Tuesday, the 25-year-old outfielder collected two triples, setting a new Diamondbacks single-season record with 16. It marked his fourth multi-triple game of the year, a remarkable feat that underscores both his speed and his ability to find gaps. Carroll finished the set 4-for-11 with a stolen base, adding to a season that already features career highs in both triples and home runs.

Carroll’s offensive profile has evolved in 2025. While his on-base percentage has dipped from his rookie year, his slugging percentage sits at .556, powered not just by home runs but also by his uncanny knack for stretching hits into extra bases. That slugging mark places him in rare company within Diamondbacks history. Only a handful of players: Luis Gonzalez, Paul Goldschmidt, Ketel Marte, Jay Bell, and Chad Tracy, have finished a season north of .550. Considering Chase Field has played far less hitter-friendly in recent years, Carroll’s output stands out even more.

With several weeks left in the season, Carroll still has an outside shot at challenging a stat line of 20+ home runs, 20+ triples, 20+ doubles, and 20+ stolen bases. The last person to do that was Jimmy Rollins, and it would put him in a small group of greats to do it like Willy Mays. If anyone has the speed and instincts to make that push, it’s Carroll, whose blend of power and explosiveness remains one of Arizona’s most dynamic weapons.

Coaching Change at Third Base

Following the finale, manager Torey Lovullo announced that Shaun Larkin had been removed from his role as third base coach. Larkin will remain with the team for player development, but his repeated questionable sends, including waving Alek Thomas home on a non-competitive play in the final game, proved costly. The Diamondbacks are ranked 3rd worst in the league in outs at home plate, and the move was widely viewed as overdue. Mid-season coaching changes remain rare across the league, but this decision was much needed.

Roster Moves and Player Development

The Diamondbacks are preparing for the return of catcher Gabriel Moreno, who is completing a rehab assignment. His activation could create a roster crunch between veterans James McCann and Jose Herrera, as well as Del Castillo, who continues to make offensive contributions but is still developing defensively.

In the minor leagues, right-hander Daniel Eagan earned a promotion to Double-A after dominating in Hillsboro with a 2.49 ERA and 132 strikeouts in his first professional season. Infielder Jansel Luis has carried a batting average above .300 thanks to a recent hot streak, while young prospect Kayson Cunningham made his debut, enduring early struggles but gaining valuable experience.

Playoff Positioning

Despite taking two out of three from Cleveland, the Diamondbacks remain six games back of the final Wild Card spot, currently held by the Mets. They sit just behind the Reds and Cardinals, both of whom have struggled recently. The next series against the Cincinnati Reds carries heightened importance. Cincinnati swept Arizona earlier in the year, and the outcome of this rematch could significantly influence the Diamondbacks’ rapidly fading postseason chances.

Final Outlook

The series against the Guardians highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of this Diamondbacks club. Arizona received quality starting pitching and timely offensive contributions, but ongoing issues with base-running decisions and offensive inconsistency remain unresolved. The coaching change at third base underscores the organization’s epiphany to correct mistakes that have cost valuable runs.

With Moreno set to return and several prospects showing promise in the minors, the future remains bright. We question whether that bright future is sooner rather than later. For now, however, the focus stays squarely on the present. To keep any modicum of postseason hopes alive, the Diamondbacks will need to build on the positives from the Guardians series and carry that momentum into a crucial showdown with the Reds.

He’s slugging the baseball. A ball in the gap is not a double. He’s thinking three.

This game had the feel of a pair of exhausted boxers desperately seeking a knockout blow, but never quite landing one. Instead, it was a series of jabs – each team created plenty of baserunning traffic – but no dramatic punch that could alter the match. The two teams combined to strand 13 baserunners on the afternoon and Cleveland managed to go a woeful 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position for the game. There was quite literally no lack of scoring opportunities, but each team managed to find a way to either run themselves out of an inning or struggle to land the kind of knockout blow both teams were so intensely looking for throughout the afternoon.

Brandon Pfaadt was erratic early, loading the bases in the opening frame on a pair of singles from Steven Kwan and Daniel Schneeman as well as a plunking of Kyle Manzardo on the foot. He was able to limit the damage to a single run though on an RBI-groundout from Bo Naylor that was hit too slowly for a double play. In the very next inning, Pfaadt gave up a hard line drive to C.J. Kayfus to right field that completely flummoxed Corbin Carroll as he whiffed on the ball and allowed it to bounce off the fence for a leadoff stand-up triple. Just two pitches later, Brayan Rocchio would plate Kayfus on yet another RBI groundout to recapture the lead for the Guardians 2-1.

Meanwhile, Parker Messick was excellent in his major league debut, going 6.2 innings of one-run ball on seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts. The 12th-ranked prospect in the Cleveland system, Messick leaned on his fastball and plus-changeup to collect eight whiffs and kept the Arizona batters off-balance through much of his outing. Certainly some of that success came from a lack of a scouting report and the undoubtedly high adrenaline Messick was experiencing, but you have to tip your metaphorical hat to a young player already making a mark in his first taste of the big leagues.

The Arizona offense wasted no time creating some sparks of their own however. Ketel Marte started the game with a patient leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, moved to third on a groundout by Geraldo Perdomo, and then scored on a dunked single to right from Lourdes Gurriel Jr who continues to have an excellent August. They created another scoring opportunity that they quickly squander for themselves in the fifth as Alex Thomas collected a leadoff single and then was aggressively sent home on a shallow double from James McCann, but was cut down at the plate. Unfortunately, Thomas was out by a solid margin with an excellent relay from centerfield. It was a puzzling decision by third-base coach Shaun Larkin given the top of the lineup was looming, but the point was rendered moot by the double play Perdomo bounced into one batter later. Sadly, the send may have been one of the reasons why Larkin was removed from the third-base coach post just hours after gametime as the combined stress and scrutiny of the position combined with a loss of confidence from the players prompted the decision from Torey Lovullo.

After that tantalizing opportunity, the Arizona offense would once again go dormant for much of the remainder of the game. They had just one hit and baserunner – until the bottom of the ninth when Gurriel Jr decided to put the team on his back with a titanic blast to left field that tied the game and sent us to extras. It was the first homer closer Cade Smith has allowed against right-handed hitters all season, but its source shouldn’t be a surprise given the absolute tear Gurriel Jr has been on this month. After Andrew Saalfrank managed to put up a zero in the visiting half of the 10th, pinch-hitter Adrian Del Castillo called game with a floater on the first pitch he saw to plate Pavin Smith who had advanced to third on a picture-perfect bunt from Thomas. It marked Del Castillo’s second career walkoff hit and ended a surprisingly entertaining series against the Guardians.

View Link

As the D-Backs’ already flimsy playoff hopes have further deflated after the Trade Deadline firesale, it’s important to see how the younger players on the roster continue to develop while some of the remaining veterans demonstrate what kind of value they can bring either next season or as possible trade chips. Based on that criteria, this was a very successful series. It included another excellent outing from Pfaadt, clutch hits from youngsters like Del Castillo and Perdomo, and a continuation of stellar play from Gurriel Jr. Of course, we’ve seen this play this year far too many times to be fooled. This team is plenty capable of putting together a nice string of solid baseball with timely hitting, perseverant at-bats, and solid pitching to quickly turn around and do the opposite of all of those things. Thankfully, tonight’s dismissal of Larkin and the trades the team made at the Deadline demonstrate that the team can recognize the changes that need to be made and are unafraid of making those changes. We just have to hope that they can continue that pattern this offseason and next year to supplement such an exciting core of players that the team has accumulated.

During today’s post game press conference, Torey Lovullo announced that Shaun Larkin would no longer be manning the third base coach position for the Diamondbacks.

“Shaun has taken on a lot of responsibilities… but at this point in time, the best thing for this ballclub, for him, and for us moving forward, is to make this decision,” Lovullo said in his remarks. He also made it clear further that a decision had not been made on who would replace Larkin in his role this coming Friday when the Diamondbacks take on the Reds but said that they were looking at internal and external candidates.

Later, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com added on Twitter that Larkin would remain with the team but would be working with the infielders.

I don’t think anyone on this site is going to be sorry to see Larkin no longer indecisively guessing as to whether or not to send runners in key positions. Nearly all of us at some point, it feels like, have aired frustrations regarding him sending runners when he clearly shouldn’t, or holding them up when they would have been clear by feet. However, I am left to wonder why he is remaining with the team at all. I do not personally have the statistical knowledge to look into this further, but the eye test shows that the Diamondbacks infield defense has declined dramatically year over year. Some of that is personnel, but even Marte and Perdomo have not looked the same. If this decline is what Larkin brings to the table there as well, personally, I would have made the decision that the team did not need any of his services. It would be interesting to hear the rationale behind that, but it seems unlikely to happen.

What was your favorite game-costing moment from Larkin? Drop it in the comments below while we await the news of who will now bear the brunt of our baserunning frustration.
