When debt is defaulted upon, the creditor has the right to pursue legal action in the attempt to get paid.A creditor will inform a debtor that legal action will be pursued. A creditor has the full right to attempt to gain a civil judgment to regain funds. The debtor will receive a date and time to appear before the judge. This is the piece that many ignore or forget, this request to appear is not made by the creditor but by the judge.When you skip this appointment, the judge will automatically rule in the creditor’s favor. The defendant will be charged to repay all debt plus court costs and service fees. Once this fine has been imposed, the creditor can call the debtor to an “examination” in civil court. They will be asked about bank accounts and any other assets which the creditor may seize for payment. If the debtor does not show up, the creditor can then request that the court ask for a “body attachment”. This is when there is an order of arrest is placed upon the debtor. It is termed modern day debtors prison. Those people who have little knowledge of how the court systems work will find them trapped in legal ways to squeeze money from them. Payday loan creditors may follow all legal recourse to obtain payment in full.Illegal debt collections are forbidden by any creditor. There are some states which do not allow “debtor’s prison”, but the St. Louis area on both sides of the Mississippi River, this practice happens on a regular basis. According to Missouri Bill of Rights, their constitution states that nobody can be imprisoned for debt except if the fines and penalties are issued by law.There are times that the court system does not let the problem end with debtor’s prison. These children tend to lack assertiveness and frequently have difficulties in social situations that require interactions with more than one person or with people that they do not know. They sometimes have problems with a sluggish cognitive tempo which may awkwardly delay their response to social interactions These kids may also be perceived by their peers as being as self centered and egotistical because they can appear standoffish as a result of their inattentiveness.The good news is assertiveness and social skills can be taught. Extensive research has been done of teaching social skills to children with ADHD. Children with Combined type (ADHD-C) and Hyperactive Impulsive ADHD (ADHD-HI) need training in cooperation, self control, and empathy. Children with ADHD-PI need help with assertiveness, appearing approachable, and simple communication. Studies have shown that social skills’ training is extremely effective in improving communication, assertiveness, empathy, and social interactions. More importantly these studies have shown long term benefits in improving the school experience of children with ADHD.I found two studies that looked at social skills training in children with ADHD-PI. It seems that children with ADHD-PI are helped more by social skills training programs that children with combined type ADHD or children with ADHD and co-morbid Oppositional Defiance Disorder.The first study performed on 59 children at the Children’s Hospital-Boston found that children with ADHD-PI were helped more with social skills training than were children with the combined type of ADHD. The children received 8 weeks of social skills training after which; “Children with ADHD-I improved in assertion skills more than children with ADHD-C.”The second study is ongoing and is taking place in Berkley. Researchers at the University of California are conducting a longitudinal study of children with ADHD-PI. They are using a tool called the Child Life and Attention Skills Program (CLAS) to teach ADHD-PI children and parents both attention skills and social skills. The researchers are still recruiting participants but the first set of results, published a few years ago, concluded that; “Children randomized to the Child Life and Attention Skills Program were reported to have significantly fewer inattention and sluggish cognitive tempo symptoms, and significantly improved social and organizational skills, relative to the control group.” If you happen to live in the San Francisco area, you can contact the Department of Psychiatry at UC Berkley here to participate in this study.Children with ADHD are generally aware of social cues. They do not need to be taught to ‘read’ people’s reactions to them. Being unaware of social cues is one of the hallmarks of children and adults with Asberger’s syndrome but it is generally not a problem for children with ADHD. Children with ADHD-C and ADHD-HI have difficulty with self control but are still aware of the social impression that they are making. Children with ADHD-PI are often keelnly aware of their social awkwardness and tend to avoid situations that will cause them to be embarrassed.The social skills training tools that have worked the best to train children with ADHD include exercises that break down complex social situations into smaller components and train, one at a time, each component of the social interaction. Role playing games are helpful as is modeling which involves having the child watch a model exhibiting the desired behavior. Social skills’ training is generally a family affair. Parents, siblings, and other family members are encouraged to participate in the training and role playing, provide encouragement to the children in training, and to help reinforce the behaviors that are being trained.In conclusion, social skills’ training has proven to be extremely beneficial in improving the self confidence and school experience of children with ADHD. How do such companies manage to grow, and how can the small businesses of today’s world hope to emulate their success? I’ve been thinking about this recently and I’ve come to some surprising conclusions.It is my assertion that being a small business enables the innovative approaches that create game-changing economic juggernauts. On the other hand, the realities of being an economic juggernaut make the same type of innovation much less likely.This is why small businesses are the true drivers of innovation. It’s impossible to compete in a traditional manner, so the only way to win is to change the game.Unlike small businesses, large companies favour orderly changes that are easily contained in an existing industrial or corporatized context. They like controlled processes, where their tight structures and access to resources put them at an advantage. Any hierarchical organisation has the same attitude.Even if there is a mass adoption of new modes of problem solving, this is usually followed by attempts at acquisition on the part of a larger organisation. Look at the history of any large technology company – after a certain point they stop developing new products and begin buying start-ups and once again fast tracking their path to new and more innovating technology, all to stay ahead of the pack.Even when a company is not the creator of a certain type of disruption, many arise to occupy the new ecosystem that it generates. There would be no search engine optimisation industry without search engines, after all. In the rise and fall of these niches, it is the least established organisations that benefit from them.Why Small Businesses Can Create DisruptionWe know why industrial disruptions benefit small businesses, but why are they the ones that are uniquely capable of creating them? There are several reasons for this.Disruptive innovation is a mass-level, non-institutional change. At its core, it threatens the status quo and is usually born out of small, non-hierarchical groupings. Structural change and disruption take place in large, traumatic upheavals, which uniquely benefit small, loosely-organised groups.In smaller organisations, where each person is more likely to wear multiple hats, specialisation is practically non-existent due to the need of being the jack of all trades. This leads to a greater flexibility and willingness to change fundamental approaches. A specialised method of solving problems is a recipe for orthodoxy and thinking that any deviation from the norm is impractical.For exactly the same reasons that larger organisations are better at solving problems at a large scale, they are worse at recognising necessary deviations from the norm. Compartmentalised, specialised processes stifle novelty and creativity, keeping them less nimble while being necessary for mass support and service.Furthermore, the ties between those who run small businesses are most often not economic, but predicated on other social ties. Small businesses, including start-ups, are often formed among friends and family, rather than among a group of specialists in a particular field. This allows them to harness the self-motivating forces of loyalty and genuine ownership of the product, giving them that extra drive to overcome any potential hurdles.There are large companies that have attempted to create these types of structures within a larger corporate environment, but their successes are the exception rather than the rule. They become unwieldy and difficult to control from the centre. Industrial hierarchy makes it possible to take less trained workers and get more uniform results from them. Anyone who’s ever had a fast food job can attest to this.Small businesses, when faced with an unusual problem (and when you’re developing the next big thing in your garage, there’s no such thing as a usual problem) tend to find unusual solutions to it. In larger organisations, each possible new solution has to be passed up the corporate ladder, being distorted and or diluted each time it’s passed up or down the chain. This delays and usually weakens any adoption of new ideas.
