Pieterse, the reigning cross-country world champion, arrived fresh off a victory in Nové Město Na Moravě, while Blevins has now secured four in a row, having also won in Nové Město Na Moravě, and both rounds in Araxá.

Pieterse caught her rivals off guard with a surprise attack on a five-rider front group mid-race, and then crossed the line 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Samara Maxwell (Decathlon Ford Factory Racing) and 21 seconds ahead of third-placed Nicole Koller (Ghost Factory Racing), who had jumped ahead of fourth-place Mona Mitterwallner (Mondraker Factory Racing) on the final climb.

«I’m just taking it race by race and focusing on my process. Right now, the process is working. That was the hardest one yet. Just look at that climb. Sometimes you’ve got to surf it and find the little pockets to shoot through. Sometimes the guys at the back are working harder than the guys at the front. But on a course like this, it’s max effort for 20 minutes, and everyone is so strong,» Blevins said.

“Tactics here are more like how you’re pushing your body and how you’ll find that edge and go just to the tip of it every time, and then last lap it’s all out. I saved that final match and definitely burned it for the win.»

Blevins also became the first rider to win the first four UCI XCC World Cups of the season. He is now turning his attention to the elite men’s cross-country event, where he could win his third in a row this season after winning round two in Araxá and round three in Nové Město Na Moravě.

“The pressure is outside of you,» he said. «It’s other people’s projections. I’ve been winning by just focusing on my process, the mental side of it, the emotional side of it, bringing the mind and body to the closest I could get to doing my best at every single race. You’re just focusing on the processes, you don’t really think about pressure.”

The elite women’s and elite men’s cross-country XCO events will take place on Sunday in Leogang, Austria.

Shimano’s flagship MTB race groupset, XTR, has been electric in the past, but the latest e-version was released in 2015 so there is almost a decade of electric shifting experience in the company since its last crack of the whip. Since then the Japanese componentry giant has fallen back to relying on its cable-actuation expertise for mountain bikes, despite its GRX gravel groupsets coming in electronic versions (albeit only 2x ones), and on the road Di2 shifting being on offer down to 105 level, and even incorporated into its latest Cues commuter groupsets too.

This latest XTR groupset is a reassertion of the brands faith in electronic shifting, and, now that SRAM has gone fully electric at all tiers, and we are likely to see an electric 13sp gravel groupset from Campagnolo on the horizon soon, a broader, industry-wide endorsement of electric as the way to go on all terrains.

Before we dive into the individual updates, I’ll wet the metaphorical whistles with the headline figures: We’re looking at the first fully wireless electronic groupset from Shimano, with a removable battery in the rear derailleur, a new 9t smallest sprocket on one cassette option (one smaller than you’d get from SRAM), and the potential for some interesting mashup groupset combinations.

This isn’t the first time XTR has had electronic shifting, but it is the first wireless system from Shimano (Image credit: Shimano)

Fully wireless shifting

It is sad as primarily a road cyclist that the MTB brigade get the cream of the crop when it comes to component evolution. I could bore you with the fact that Dura-Ace Di2 wasn’t the first to do electric shifting back in 2009, with this accolade going to the long-forgotten Shimano Nexave Di2 for commuter bikes back in 2001, though this had automatic shifting. In any case, it wasn’t a top-end road groupset, and neither was the mad Shimano Airlines that used a tank of compressed air to shift instead of the movement of electrons, but that’s by the by.

In any case, XTR has finally brought Shimano into the world of proper wireless shifting. No battery in the seatpost, and fiddly wires to connect, but instead a battery in the derailleur that can be removed for charging as is the case with all SRAM electronic groupsets and the latest wireless Campagnolo options too.

The new XTR M9250 rear derailleur is also designed to be lower profile, and more durable, with a dual-spring design to increase tension in the system in a bid to improve chain retention. This lower profile is designed to reduce the risk of rock strikes, which are more common as you shift to larger sprockets and the long derailleur cage gets closer to the ground, so in order to tackle this Shimano has done something novel with the cassette design, but more on that shortly.

If you are to bash the derailleur in an impact then, instead of going into crash recovery mode and needing a manual reset, as is the case with current Di2 systems, XTR Di2 will simply remember the gear you were in, take the impact, and then reset itself back to where it once was.

Two versions of the wireless rear derailleur will be available, as well as a separate pair that can be hard-wired into an e-bike battery so they never need charging. Long cage versions will pair with a 12-speed 10-51t cassette, which already exists, while short cage versions will work with a 9-45t cassette. Yes, nine.

The battery is housed in the derailleur, and can be removed for charging. (Image credit: Shimano)

A nine-tooth sprocket

If you want to maintain a decent gear range, and don’t want to put a long cage derailleur on for fear of rock strikes, then instead of going bigger and bigger with the largest sprockets, as we’ve seen with SRAM’s Eagle options, Shimano has instead gone smaller, adding a 9t smallest sprocket to one of its cassette options, whilst maintaining the use of the microspline freehub body employed currently by Shimano MTB systems.

A 9t is the smallest we’ve seen in what we can reasonably call ‘performance cycling’, though it has been common in the world of BMX for some time in an effort to reduce the size of the chainrings while maintaining the same gear ratio. The 9-45t cassette sets a new standard for sprocket size in any case, but maintains a 500% gear range. It’s still less than the 520% on offer from an Eagle 10-52 cassette, but in a substantially smaller package.

These cassettes can be paired with either XC Race (read: lightweight) or Enduro (read: more durable) versions of the same crankset, both based on the tried and tested Hollowtech II blueprint.

The new shifter buttons can be configured, and there’s a third button too for bonus functionality. (Image credit: Shimano)

Choose-your-own-adventure braking and a new shifter pod

Unlike most (neigh, all, if I’m not mistaken) groupset options, where the braking setup was set in stone, besides fitting larger or smaller rotors, XTR Di2 has three different braking options: A lightweight XC Race setup, a setup that’s a little heavier that prioritises braking power and modulation for trail/enduro riding, and a middle ground that tries to be the best of both.

How Shimano has achieved this, I think, is by offering a pair of brake callipers (trail & XC), one being four-piston and the other two, and a pair of brake lever options (also trail & XC), and, I presume, allowing users to opt to run a trail lever with an XC caliper or vice versa, though it is not clear what is the suggested combination at this time. Shimano has offered 4-pot and 2-pot callipers as part of the same system before, but they both used the same lever. Both systems use a new, lower viscosity (thinner) mineral oil that, Shimano says, helps to provide a consistent piston rebound speed over a wider temperature range.

Finally there is a new shifter, given that, like an XC Bob Dylan, it’s finally gone electric. The little control deck has three configurable buttons, two for shifting and one to act as a bonus button for things like your bike computer. These can be purchased in a band-on configuration, or in a guise that bolts directly onto the XTR brake levers themselves for a cleaner cockpit.

This is, as far as we are aware, the first time that bonus buttons have features on a mountain bike groupset, opening up possibilities for flat bar enthusiasts hitherto only available to drop bar riders. In reality, the ability to swap computer screens without taking your hands off the bars makes a lot more sense for MTB than it does for road riding.

There are new brakes too, with XC and Trail varieties. (Image credit: Shimano)

What does this mean for the future of Shimano?

It is perhaps slightly outside of our normal wheelhouse to cover the launch of an MTB groupset, but this XTR launch prompts some educated guesswork and speculation about what the future holds for Shimano componentry.

Personally I think the move to a wireless system is both welcome and overdue. I am a huge fan of Shimano groupsets, but the installation and maintenance headaches are significantly greater than that of SRAM options. I think, in the fullness of time, we will see wireless shifting on offer on gravel and road groupsets.

I don’t think we will see the end of 2x, though thanks to SRAM’s patents we will probably see any Shimano wireless 2x systems adopting a pair of non-identical batteries as is the case with Campagnolo Super Record Wireless.

What is more intriguing is where this places the future of inter-groupset compatibility. Now we have electronic, 12sp shifting in road, gravel, and MTB, this means that there may finally be a path opening up for true intercompatibility between road, gravel, and MTB setups in the same way as in the SRAM ecosystem.

Mathieu van der Poel has already returned to training after fracturing his wrist during Sunday’s round of the UCI XCO World Cup in Nové Mesto at the weekend.

Mathieu van der Poel has suffered a minor wrist fracture as a result of his double crash in the MTB World Series race in Nové Mesto, Alpecin-Deceuninck have said.

The Dutch champion has been diagnosed with what the team described as «A minor avulsion fracture of the scaphoid bone, indicative of ligament damage to the wrist.»

The initial consequence is that Van der Poel will have to miss the early part of his team’s high-altitude training camp in the Alps; however, there is no news about how it could affect his participation in the Critérium du Dauphiné.

The team also stated that it was too soon to have a definitive prognosis or to give a clear indication of how it will affect Van der Poel’s program.

«The injury will be subject to continued and intensive medical evaluation throughout the week,» the statement said.

«Further assessments, scheduled towards the end of the week, may offer greater clarity regarding his program and the potential for participation in the Critérium du Dauphiné.»

Van der Poel was riding in his first MTB race since the 2023 Olympic test event when he crashed, just six minutes into the event. He abandoned on the third lap. After years of huge success in cyclocross and road racing, his participation in the Nove Mesto race was with an eye on preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games.

His first crash came as he attempted to move up around the outside of the group on the opening lap, but he lost balance as he tried to lean on a rider and went into the fencing as he hit the ground.

In the second incident, he once again lost balance on a pump track section of the course and went over the top of his handlebars, hitting the ground again as his bike crashed into the fencing.

Van der Poel was checked out back in Belgium, in the hospital in Herentals, but no information has been forthcoming until today. Following his hugely successful Classics campaign with wins in Milan-San Remo and Paris-Roubaix, Van der Poel recently said he was going to take part in the Dauphiné (June 8-15) prior to his long-planned return to the Tour de France (July 5-27).

In contrast to Van der Poel’s setback, there is some good injury update news regarding teammate Sam Gaze, who was also caught up in a crash on Sunday. Gaze suffered what was initially feared to be a broken arm, but checkups showed his fall did not have such serious consequences, and he has no fractures.

The Grand Tour racing season began on May 9 with the Giro d’Italia as the Italian Grand Tour kicked off with a trio of stages in Albania, where Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was the stand-out rider, taking the first and third stage wins and the maglia rosa. Then once on Italian soil, he won a third stage on stage 5 in Matera.

The Giro d’Italia route includes mountain stages in the Alps and Dolomites before a finish in Rome. On stage 9 to Siena, Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took the first pink jersey for Mexico and continued in the lead through stage 12.

The main 2025 Giro d’Italia contenders facing Del Toro include Primoz Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), and UAE Team Emirates-XRG pairing of Adam Yates and Juan Ayuso.

Other major names on the start list include Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease A Bike), Tom Pidcock (Q36.5), and Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek).

The race is available on several platforms across the world, with live streaming options as well. Read on for all the details on how to watch the Giro d’Italia online, on TV, and from anywhere.

What time is the Giro d’Italia on today?

On Saturday, May 24, the Giro d’Italia heads from Treviso into Slovenia for a mostly flat finish in Gorizia at the end of a 195 kilometre stage 14.

It’s the most sprinter-friendly stage until next week when there is another flat finish in Cesano Maderno on stage 18 with massive mountain stages in between.

Although there isn’t much elevation gain, what climbing there is all comes in the final 38 kilometres with a trio of category 4 ascents.

The tiny Saver climb is the last with 7.6km to go and it should hardly bother the fast men like stage 12 winner Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) or points classification leader and quadruple stage winner Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), but look for a challenge from Kaden Groves (ALpecin-Deceuninck), Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and Paul Magnier (Soudal-Quickstep).

The stage starts in Treviso at 12:55 CEST (11:55 BST / 6:55 EDT) and finishes in Gorizia at approximately 17:15 CEST (16:15 BST / 11:15 EDT).

The 2025 edition of the Giro d’Italia is being broadcast for free in Australia, as well as in numerous European countries.

SBS has the rights to the Giro d’Italia in Australia, with all 21 stages available through the SBS On Demand free streaming platform.

In the host country of Italy, the Giro d’Italia is, as ever, in the hands of the public broadcaster RAI, with the stages on RAI 2 or RAI Sport on TV, and all through RAI Play online.

In Switzerland, public broadcaster SRG has the rights, with the Giro d’Italia to be shown on RSI La 2, which can be streamed online via the RSI website.

Not in one of these countries right now? Geo-restrictions apply, but if that’s where you usually watch your cycling, then you can still get your access by using a VPN — more on that below.

Travelling outside your home country during the Giro d’Italia? Don’t worry about the geo-restrictions most streaming platforms use. You can always employ a VPN for a safe way to access your streaming accounts from another country.

A Virtual Private Network is a piece of software that sets your IP address to make your device appear to be in any country in the world. Provided it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs, you can use a VPN to unblock your usual streaming services from anywhere in the world. What’s more, it helps with playback speeds and is a huge boost for your general internet security.

There are loads of great VPN options out there, but our colleagues at TechRadar say NordVPN is the best overall for its streaming capabilities, security features, and price.

It was not the comeback that Mathieu van der Poel would have hoped for at the UCI Mountain Bike Series XCO World Cup in Nové Město na Moravě, as he crashed twice in the first six minutes of the race before abandoning on the third lap on Sunday.

His team, Alpecin-Deceuninck, have not yet released a medical update confirming the extent of his injuries.

The Dutchman had not ridden a mountain bike race for nearly two years, and it was his first appearance at a World Cup event since 2021.

A bad day for Alpecin-Deceuninck then got worse, as after an eighth-place finish in the XCC race on Saturday, Van der Poel’s teammate Samuel Gaze also crashed out of the race on the fifth lap.

Meanwhile, at the head of the race, Christopher Blevins took a commanding victory for Specialized Factory Racing to extend his overall lead in the World Cup standings ahead of his teammate Victor Koretzky, who finished in fourth place behind Mathis Azzaro (Orgine Racing Division) and Lars Forster (Thömus Maxon).

There is currently very little information as to whether Van der Poel and Gaze sustained any serious injuries in their crashes, as Alpecin-Deceuninck has yet to make any comment.

Lachlan Morton has a packed schedule of races this year but he has continued to squeeze in a number of other feats along the way, the latest a flying run on a 300-kilometre mountain bike route in Bergslagsleden, centred on the popular Swedish hiking trail.

Morton set a time of 15 hours and 21 minutes on the trail, one that his EF Education-EasyPost team said looks to be a possible new fastest known time on a route which follows a large portion of the hiking trail, along with some diversions including those that detour around some unrideable sections.

«It had been raining overnight, so it was really wet in there, and it was slick as hell,» said Morton post-ride.

 You may like

‘This wasn’t just chasing a new record; it was chasing a legend’ – Lachlan Morton rides 648km in a single day to break record for Auckland-Wellington

‘Keep the hand in the fire’ – Lachlan Morton gets set to buy into the pace at The Traka 360

‘That was it, day done’ – Broken wheel snaps Lachlan Morton’s Traka 360 hopes so now attention turns to Unbound XL

«It was all rocks and roots with zero traction, a proper hiking trail. So, the first few hours were very challenging and slow going. It was very difficult just to stay on the bike.

«The trail kicked my arse for the first four or five hours. There was lots of hiking. You were constantly trying to work out where traction was. At that point, I was like, ‘This is going to be a long, long day.'»

Morton is a former winner of Unbound 200, the holder of an around Australia record and has also set a time of just 12 days, 12 hours and 21 minutes to cover the 2,671 mile Tour Divide route. He is not afraid of long days particularly given as the hours on the bike stretched, the terrain eased.

«It slowly started to dry out and after the first 120 kilometres or so, there was a bit more flow, and then, I started to enjoy it a lot more,» said Morton.

«The first half felt like I was just against the trail and it was trying to kill me and I was trying not to die, and in the second half, I felt like I’d made peace with it and worked it out. It is a pretty relentless, but beautiful route.»

The wilderness trail, where the only others Morton ran into along the way were a couple of bemused hikers, swept through heavily forested terrain, lakes and lookout points as it works its way across an old Swedish mining region on nearly all unpaved road. About a third of the course was single-track and with an elevation gain of around 3,500 metres according to a map of the course on Bikepacking.com.

«I wanted to do it for the sake of doing it versus a race,» Lachlan said. «I rode it hard and fast and whatever, because I only had a day, but I was hanging around a bit more than I normally would, because it’s not a route I’ll probably ever get a chance to ride again,» said Morton.

«This was my one shot at it. Once I got halfway through, I realised it would be possible to finish in daylight hours, so then that became a bit of a carrot towards the end, but it wasn’t an all out assault.»

Morton, who had squeezed in the effort after The Traka 360 in Spain, said that the Bergslagsleden is ideally a route where you would take your time and «enjoy the very peaceful forest riding».

Mathieu van der Poel is set to return to racing at the end of May as he switches to the mountain bike for a round of the UCI World Cup in Nové Město.

The Dutchman, who hasn’t raced since concluding his spring Classics campaign with his third Paris-Roubaix victory on April 13, will be back in action for Alpecin-Deceuninck on the weekend of May 23-25 as he makes a return to cross-country mountain biking.

Van der Poel hasn’t participated in a World Cup round since the 2021 season, when he won the short-track races in Albstadt and Nové Město.

He raced in the Tokyo Olympics later in the same year but crashed out early in the race and suffered persistent back problems, which carried over into 2022. In 2023, he raced at the Paris Olympics test event, but didn’t participate in the MTB event at the Olympics proper.

Van der Poel has instead focused on cyclocross and road racing with great success, picking up three ‘cross world titles and seven of his eight victories in the Monument Classics in the past three years.

He was rumoured to be making his mountain bike return this weekend in Heubach, Germany, but will instead head to Czechia for the third UCI World Cup round of the season. His move back to mountain biking comes with an eye on preparation towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

After taking on the race at Nové Město, Van der Poel will refocus on the road for the summer as he heads to the Tour de France.

He’ll switch back to mountain biking after July, Alpecin-Deceuninck stated – «a detailed program will be announced later» – with the UCI MTB World Championships in September a late-season goal.

The Belgian squad also announced the upcoming mountain bike schedule for world champion Puck Pieterse and New Zealand racer Sam Gaze.

The pair will head to the HC event in Heubach on May 18 before taking part in the next three rounds of the UCI World Cup.

As well as racing at Nové Město, both Pieterse and Gaze will head to Leogang, Austria, on June 5-8 and Val di Sole, Italy, on June 20-22.
Both riders skipped the opening World Cups in Brazil, Pieterse as she was focusing on the Spring Classics and Gaze through illness.

The UCI Mountain Bike World Series continues this weekend (May 16-18) with downhill and enduro rounds in Bielsko-Biała, Poland, before cross-country returns for a third round in Nové Město the following weekend.

Lauren Stephens (Aegis Cycling Mixed Team) earned the overall title at the women’s Tour de Bloom stage race, recapturing the race lead with a solo victory on the final day of racing on a mountaintop finish at Mission Ridge Resort, Washington. Held May 2-6 for a 25th edition in the Cascade Mountains of north-central Washington, the Tour de Bloom elevated the elite women’s race to UCI 2.2 level for the first time.

The former US Pro road race champion finished on the podium all five days, capturing three stage victories and the mountain classification title. It was her second UCI stage race victory of the spring, having swept all three classifications — GC, points, mountains — at Tour of the Gila in April.

Alia Shafi (Fount Cycling Guild) finished second on GC, 7:34 behind Stephens, but held off third-placed Paula Gil (Valkyer Mixed Team) by a slim three seconds. Marlies Mejías (Virginia’s Blue Ridge TWENTY28) won the points classification for elite women.

Matthew Wilson (POA Racing) won the men’s overall in the five-day stage race, which continued as a USA Cycling-sanctioned event. The New Zealander, who came fresh off racing at Whiskey 50 mountain bike weekend with a Fat Tire Crit win and fifth in the backcountry race, closed out the GC title by winning the final three stages and secured the mountain classification with his stage 5 victory.

Tim McBirney (Mike’s Bikes p/b Equator Coffees) finished 51 seconds back on GC for second, and Richard Arnopol (Project Echelon Racing) was another 14 seconds back for third overall.

«We had a lot of goals, number one was to win the GC. Number two was to win the race, number three was team GC. QOM was our next goal too, and we got that one too so we’re happy,» Stephens told organisers at the finish on Tuesday.

«My team executed it so well. Finishing up here at the ski resort is exciting, finishing on the gravel makes for a great stage. It’s exciting to see we have UCI races coming back to America.»

Canadian Alison Jackson (EF Education-Oatly) delivered her first victory of the season on stage 2 at Gracia Orlová and used a podium finish on stage 5 to secure the overall title at the five-day Czech Republic stage race.

With the stage victory on a 124.4km ride in the mountains, the former Paris-Roubaix champion then erased an eight-second deficit to race leader Marieke Meert (Team Belgium) on the stage 3, using a solid fifth-place finish to go into a tie for the GC lead with ITT winner Jasmin Liechti (Nexetis). Jackson then finished top 20 the final two days, including third on stage 5, to take the GC victory by 10 seconds over Liechti. Jackson also won the points classification.

«It was a younger group out there with me, and I guess in some ways I took on more of a mentor role,» said Jackson. «This race doesn’t allow radios, so there’s more pressure on the road captain to make calls and communicate clearly. That kind of setup puts responsibility on the riders to manage situations in the moment and we did just that.»

Riley Amos (Trek-Kenetick-SRAM) and Savilia Blunk (Decathlon Ford Racing Team) won the elite titles at the Whiskey Off-Road 50-mile backcountry race in Prescott, Arizona.

The Whiskey Off-Road weekend was held for a 20th edition from April 25-27 in Prescott, Arizona, with a Pro Criterium, Pro Backcountry races and amateur races on the third day. A pro purse of $34,000 was on the line.

Blunk held off Alexis Skarda (Santa Cruz Bicycles-SRAM) to win the elite women’s Fat Tire Criterium on Friday. She then went to work straight away in the endurance race Saturday setting the pace early in the women’s field and earned the prize bonus at the top of the first climb. Skarda joined her on the next major climb at Copper Basin, but Blunk powered away for a solo win in 3:40:26, 7:24 faster than Skarda.

Hannah Otto (SCOTT) rode alone for third place, with Erin Osbourne (Soul Ride) edging Deanna Mayles (SRAM) for fourth by six seconds.

«Had a great day today on 50 miles of backcountry, suffering through long climbs and ripping up and down the trails. Stoked to take the win and huge thank you to Epic Rides (organisers) and Whiskey Off-Road for keeping solid prize money alive and well for the #MTB,» Blunk posted to her Instagram.

«It was a last minute decision to make it out to Prescott but I’m so glad I did. It’s very rare Cole [Paton] and I get to race the same event anymore so when it works it’s so fun and feels “normal” to be lining up to race together. «

Blunk’s partner Paton would factor into the men’s backcountry race, but had to settle for third place, 1:30 behind winner Amos, while Bradyn Lange (Pinarello-Orange Seal) took second, 52 seconds behind Amos.

Amos and Lange rode as a duo and created a gap in the men’s field in the first hour of racing, Andrew l’Esperance (Maxxis) leading the chase group a few seconds back. Once to Skull Valley, Amos opened a gap, while Paton joined Lange for the chase. The top three was then set the rest of the way.

Sean Fincham (Maxxis) rode solo for fourth place while Matthew Wilson (Santa Cruz Bicycles-Shimano) grabbed the final podium in a three-rider sprint against L’Esperance and Kyle Trudeau (Tenac Coaching). Wilson had won the men’s Fat Tire Crit Friday night with a mid-race solo attack.
