The University of Toledo’s new footbridge over Douglas Road will be set in place on Wednesday, May 14.

The 78-foot span, which was constructed off-site in two pieces, will be bolted together and hoisted into place atop the abutments on either side of Douglas Road.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-92738" class="wp-image-92738" src="https://news.utoledo.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/2024.10.03-UT-Bridge_E_Gateway.jpg" alt="Computer rendering of the completed UToledo footbridge over Douglas Road.
Douglas Road will be closed between University Hills Boulevard and East Rocket Drive from approximately 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. while work is being completed. A detour will be posted.

Crews will start preparations Wednesday at 6 a.m. and begin bolting the two sections together around 8 a.m. The crane is expected to begin easing the bridge into place around 10 a.m. Timing is subject to change based on weather.

The $3.4 million bridge will more directly connect the University’s engineering buildings to the rest of Main Campus and improve safety for pedestrians going between the two areas of campus. Currently the only designated crossing for Douglas Road between University Hills Boulevard and Dorr Street is the crosswalk at Oakwood Avenue and East Rocket Drive, about a quarter mile south of where the bridge is being installed.

UToledo broke ground on the project in July and construction crews have been working since then on the bridge foundations as well as the stairs and ramps that will provide access to the elevated walkway.

The University took delivery of the bridge sections on April 23. Contractors have spent the last two weeks completing signage, electrical, fencing and decking work to prepare the span for installation.

Contractors will pour the concrete deck after the bridge is in place. That work is planned for Tuesday, May 20, and will require a second closure of the same section of Douglas Road.

Jason Toth, senior associate vice president for administration, said the project is on track for completion in June, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony expected around the end of the month.

In addition to serving faculty, staff and students, the bridge — which is located near the northeast corner of Savage Arena on the western side of Douglas Road and the intersection of Marwood Avenue and North Westwood Avenue on the eastern side of the road — also will improve access to students who live on the east side of Douglas Road as well as visitors attending events at Savage Arena who park in Area 19.

The post UToledo to Install Bridge Span Over Douglas Road on Wednesday first appeared on UToledo News.

Amy Waters will celebrate her 41st birthday with a gift to herself — a medical degree.

It’s been a long time coming. Waters, a mother of two, first dreamed of being a doctor as a middle schooler growing up in Toledo. In college, however, she fell into business, double majoring in international business and marketing at The University of Toledo.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS: UToledo recognizes the Class of 2025 with a series of stories featuring students receiving their degrees at spring commencement.

Later she would work in market research, earn an M.B.A. and settle into a career in higher education, assisting students from disadvantaged backgrounds as a program coordinator with TRIO Student Support Services.

Seeing those aspiring learners eagerly planning for their own future reignited her own ambitions.

“I had wanted to be a doctor my whole life,” she said. “If I didn’t pursue this, I would be saying goodbye to something that I had always wanted and it just didn’t feel right to me. I wanted to do something meaningful for someone else. I wanted my whole career to be about doing something for the greater good. Not trying to get into medical school would have been my biggest regret.”

So Waters started doing her research, identifying the prerequisite courses she would need for medical school and re-enrolling at UToledo to chase her dream.

After two intense years, she’d accumulated enough credits for an associate’s degree and was ready to apply for medical school.

She didn’t get in.

Undeterred, she stayed at UToledo for the Master’s of Science in Biomedical Sciences Program, which she completed in 2021 and again applied to medical school at UToledo.

This time, she was accepted.

Amy Waters, who will graduate with a medical degree on her 41st birthday, looks forward to a career serving the greater good.

“It was probably one of the happiest days of my life,” Waters said. “It was this realization that I can do this at my age with kids, having had a different career — I felt like so many doors opened for me that day.”

She will graduate from UToledo with her medical degree on May 16, which also is her 41st birthday, and soon begin her residency training in family medicine with Mercy St. Lukes Hospital in Perrysburg.

Dr. Coral Matus, an associate professor and associate dean for clinical undergraduate medical education in the College of Medicine and Life Sciences, has been impressed by Waters’ commitment to pursuing a lifelong dream.

“Just to be able to get your portfolio together to apply for medical school is a showstopper for a lot of people. That’s where they decide it’s not worth it,” Matus said. “To go through the application process and be accepted, I give her a lot of credit. It exhibits her resiliency and motivation to be in medicine and it’s been fun to see her grow. She’s going to be great connecting with patients and I’m really excited she’s going to stay in Toledo.”

While nearly three-quarters of all medical students nationwide wait at least a year after earning their undergraduate degree to begin medical school, data from the Association of American Medical Colleges shows that less than 6% of medical students are over the age of 28 when they begin their training.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-92705" class="wp-image-92705 size-full" src="https://news.utoledo.edu/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Amy-Waters-children-STORY.jpg" alt="Amy Waters celebrates Match Day with her 9-year-old son, Logan Bui, and a 10-year-old daughter, Lydia Bui. Waters will soon begin her residency training in family medicine with Mercy St. Lukes Hospital in Perrysburg.

Being a parent of two young children is even rarer. Only 1% of students accepted into medical school in 2024, for example, reported having two or more dependents. Waters has a 9-year-old son, Logan Bui, and a 10-year-old daughter, Lydia Bui.

Though that brings challenges that most traditional students don’t have to contend with, Matus said it also confers benefits.

“She has the maturity that comes from real-life experience. It’s a different perspective and gives her maybe a little more empathy and a little more introspection about what her role in medicine and her role in the world really is,” Matus said. “She’s going to endear herself to her patients, develop those relationships quickly and have a great impact on the community.”

Waters plans to set up her post-residence practice in Toledo, giving back to the community that’s given her so much. She’s currently looking to specialize in sports medicine — an interest that goes all the way back to her high school cross country days.

After falling in love with running as a freshman, she missed her entire sophomore season with a stress fracture, wondering if she’d ever be able to run again.

“I had this amazing sports medicine physician who provided me with so much hope and support that I would be able to return to running, and now 20-plus years later, I’m still running,” she said. “I want to be able to give that same hope and support to other athletes.”

As she looks back at her time in medical school, Waters sees a significant amount of personal growth. While balancing the responsibly of being a mom with the demanding schedule of a medical student wasn’t easy, it was worth it.

“One of the most important things is it’s showing my kids that they can do whatever they want to do, and it’s changing that narrative for them,” she said.

Only 2.8% of U.S. physicians are black females, making Waters a demographic outlier. However, in her children’s eyes, she’s the norm, not the exception.

“They’ve asked me if men can be surgeons or deliver babies,” she said with a laugh. “It’s so much different for my kids, because they grew up seeing me as a doctor. Their definition of a doctor is me, it’s not somebody else.”

The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences will celebrate its 2025 graduates at a commencement ceremony on Friday, May 16.

The event begins at 2 p.m. in Savage Arena on Main Campus. More than 200 students will receive doctor of medicine, doctor of philosophy or master’s degrees.

Dr. Reshma Jagsi, an internationally recognized physician-scientist and advocate for equity in medicine, will deliver the keynote address at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences commencement ceremony on Friday.

Dr. Reshma Jagsi, an internationally recognized physician-scientist and advocate for equity in medicine, will deliver the keynote address.

The College of Medicine and Life Sciences Class of 2025 includes 165 students receiving medical degrees, 41 students receiving master’s degrees and 11 students receiving doctoral degrees.

“We are proud to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of our students and honored to welcome Dr. Reshma Jagsi to campus,” said Dr. Imran Ali, dean of the College of Medicine and Life Sciences. “She is emblematic of why we go into this field — to make a difference in our communities and in the lives of our patients. As our graduates go on to the next step in their careers, I know they too will leave a positive mark on the world.”

The recipient of a medical degree from Harvard University and a doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Oxford in England, Jagsi is currently a board-certified radiation oncologist and department chair at Emory University. The author of more than 500 publications, she has devoted her career to improving the quality of care for breast cancer patients as well as studying issues of bioethics and gender equity in academic medicine.

Jagsi said she hopes to inspire graduates to reflect on what drew them to the field of medicine, the people who helped make their accomplishment possible, and their duty to use their voice and professional privilege to be a force of good.

“Equity is not a polarizing concept,” she said. “It is simply the pursuit of respectful, fair treatment of everyone in our society. Not only is it the right thing to do for us to make sure that all people have access to the best quality of healthcare we can provide and that all people have the opportunity to contribute their talents to the healthcare professions — it is the smart thing to do as well. It helps us accomplish our mission of elevating the health of our whole society.”

As UToledo’s newly minted physicians begin their practice, she encouraged them to both serve and listen to their patients.

“Patients are our best teachers,” she said. “One of my patients still texts me every birthday; another recently sent me a book of gratitude prayers; yet another filmed a video to inspire other patients to participate in clinical research. These are the human connections that make this career worthwhile.”

In addition to delivering the keynote address, she will be awarded an honorary doctor of science degree.

The College of Medicine and Life Sciences’ ceremony is UToledo’s final spring commencement ceremony.

UToledo hosted multiple spring commencement ceremonies for the colleges of Arts and Letters, Business and Innovation, Education, Engineering, Health and Human Services, Law, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Nursing and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences May 2, 3 and 11.

The post College of Medicine and Life Sciences to Recognize Graduates Friday first appeared on UToledo News.

The University of Toledo will host more than a dozen summer camps for kids to hone their athletic skills, explore their educational interests, build up their musical chops or simply have fun playing and learning with peers.

“We are happy to offer a wide range of summer programming for kids and continue to grow those programs,” Interim President Matt Schroder said. “As Toledo’s University, we want to make sure we take these opportunities to introduce families to our campus and be a vibrant destination for our community.”

The College of Nursing’s Rocket Nursing Camp, scheduled June 17-18, is one of more than a dozen camps UToledo offers this summer for kids to hone their athletic skills, explore their educational interests, build up their musical chops or simply have fun playing and learning with peers.

Information about UToledo’s summer camp programs, along with fee information and registration deadlines, is available on the University camp calendar.

Many of this summer’s camps are specifically designed to introduce high school students to potential areas of study after graduation.

The College of Engineering, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Nursing and the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences all have summer camps aimed at allowing high school students to explore careers in those fields and get a glimpse of what they could expect as undergraduate students at UToledo.

The Health Professions Career Summer Camp, for example, enables future college students to learn more about UToledo programs in healthcare information and administration, occupational therapy, physical therapy, public health, recreation therapy, respiratory care, social work and speech-language pathology.

Camp participants will engage in cadaver anatomy and simulated patient experiences, network with faculty and current students in the college and receive a guided tour of campus.

The two-day camp will be held Tuesday, July 15, and Wednesday, July 16. The deadline to register is Tuesday, July 1.

The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will host a pair of camps — an in-person, two-day Pharmacy & Science Career Camp that includes an overnight stay in one of UToledo’s residence halls, and a virtual four-day Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design Summer Camp that teaches participants about the science of makeup formulation and highlights UToledo’s unique undergraduate Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design Program.

“These camps are a great introduction to the field of pharmacy, drug discovery and cosmetic science formulation, outstanding programs that we offer here at UToledo,” said Dr. Pamela Heaton, dean of the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. “Students get to participate in hands-on activities, learn about career options and really envision themselves as UToledo students.”

Registration for both pharmacy camps closes Friday, May 30.

The College of Medicine and Life Sciences’ Future Doctors Camp offers current college undergraduates and high school students entering their sophomore, junior or senior year a unique immersion into a variety of health professions through hands-on activities and essential clinical skills including surgical suturing, casting, intravenous placement and laparoscopic surgery.

While the program includes a strong focus on medicine, participants also gain interprofessional exposure to fields such as emergency medical services, physician assistant studies, transplantation science and more.

The camp also provides expert guidance on building a strong academic and extracurricular roadmap for those interested in applying to medical school or pursuing other careers in the health sciences.Registration for the Future Doctors Camp closes Monday, June 2.

For younger children, the Office of Recreational Services will host its annual Kids Camp, which features arts and crafts, multiple field trips, guest speakers, sports, swimming and more. Open to kids between the ages of 5 and 12, the camp begins Monday, June 2, and runs nine weeks through Friday, Aug. 1. Campers must register for each week individually.

Rocket Athletics also is hosting multiple camps this summer for elementary school children.

The women’s soccer team will kick off the summer with a Mini Kickers camp for kids going into kindergarten through second grade Monday, June 2, through Friday, June 6, with later sessions available for kids going into third through eighth grade.

The men’s basketball team also will host a pair of camps with the first Kids Camp scheduled for Monday, June 9, through Thursday, June 12.

Additional camps include an orchestra workshop, a guitar camp, a drum major camp and camps for high school students interested in neurosciences or bioinformatics.

Demolition of two residence halls and one academic office building has begun at The University of Toledo.

Academic House, International House and Sullivan Hall are all slated for demolition this summer in line with the University’s Campus Master Plan, which encompasses construction and renovation proposals aimed at reinvigorating the core of Main Campus around Centennial Mall and investing in both clinical and student spaces on Health Science Campus.

Neither Academic House nor International House housed students during the most recent academic year, when the University reopened the renovated Presidents Hall.

Klumm Brothers are heading the demolition project estimated at $2 million. It is expected to be completed by the beginning of fall semester, with students returning to greenspace where the buildings are currently located along West Rocket Drive.

Four members of The University of Toledo softball team earned Mid-American Conference postseason honors, the conference announced earlier this week.

Samantha Bolding was named the MAC Freshman of the Year and earned All-MAC Second Team and All-Freshman Team honors. Seniors Eli Enriquez and Kendra VanderLugt recorded All-MAC Second Team accolades, while Audrey Miller earned a spot on the All-Freshman Team.

Bolding is only the second player in program history to earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors, joining Bailey Curry (2018). The Greenfield, Indiana, native appeared in 46 games throughout her first season and started all 26 league contests. Bolding tallied 11 home runs during conference play, a mark which led the league. She also ranked fourth-overall and first among all freshmen with a .795 slugging percentage. Bolding concluded the season with a .322 batting average, 13 home runs, 38 RBIs, a slugging percentage of .650 and a 1.04 OPS mark.

Bolding is tied for second in single-season home runs (13), ranks fifth in single-season slugging percentage (.650) and is tied for seventh in RBIs (38) in the record book. She also helped the Rockets set program records in single-game home runs (7) and single-season home runs (50).

Enriquez garnered her first All-MAC honor. The third baseman saw action in 33 games during her senior season and led the Rockets in batting average (.419), runs scored (41), hits (52) and stolen bases (22). The Sacramento, California, native recorded a team-best 18 multi-hit games and had an 11-game on-base streak this season. Enriquez was tied for second in the league in runs scored during MAC play (28) and third in league play in stolen bases (12). She is fourth all-time at UT in career stolen bases with 56 in just two seasons.

VanderLugt earned the first All-MAC selection of her career on Tuesday. The center fielder started all 47 games this season and tallied a .325 batting average to go along with 50 hits, including a team-high 13 doubles, nine home runs, and a .584 slugging percentage. The Kalamazoo, Michigan, native had 13 multi-hit games this season and helped the Rockets set program records for home runs in a single game (7) and a single season (50).

Miller earned a spot on the MAC All-Freshman Team after an impressive first-year performance. The Hartville, Ohio, native had a .338 batting average and tallied a team-best 45 RBIs in addition to 51 total hits and a slugging percentage of .589. Miller’s 45 RBIs rank third in single season history, while her nine home runs are good for seventh in a single season. Miller recorded a program-best three grand slams throughout the season, including two in conference play. She finished the 2025 campaign with 14 multi-hit games and 10 games with multiple RBIs.
