Perchloroethylene, more commonly referred to as perc, is used by the majority of dry cleaners across the United States as a solvent to wash clothes that are "dry clean only." However, despite its efficacy, the use of perc has been linked to a myriad of health issues and recently has come under heavy public scrutiny. With heavy regulation from the Environmental Protection Agency, professional dry cleaners are pursuing the use of a safer chemical--liquid carbon dioxide, which is a green alternative to washing clothes. At-home dry cleaning kits such as Dry Cleaner's Secret provide the choice of cheap and environmentally-safe dry cleaning, which cuts down on the energy-consuming, waste creating processes that professionals utilize.

The first step towards green dry cleaning is to replace harmful chemicals by using natural cleaning products. Perchloroethylene (perc) is synthetic chemical formed by a chemical reaction between ethylene and chlorine. Like many synthetic chemicals it is a danger for our wellbeing. Perc is a central nerve system depressant. It is a risk in the workplace as well as in the environmental as it is released into air, water in the form of land or groundwater. It also can occur when people use products containing perc. They may also spend time in dry cleaning facilities with perc in them, live in close proximity to these dry cleaning establishments, or bring dry cleaned garments into their homes prior to when they are properly aired. A short-term exposure can trigger nausea, headaches, dizziness and irritation to the eyes, skin nostrils, throat and nose, while long term exposure poses greater threats, including kidney and liver damage and cancer. chatki

Liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) appears to be the most efficient eco-friendly dry cleaning solvent to replace perchloroethylene. It is inexpensive, abundant naturally occurring, and is even recyclable in industrial wastes resulting from the manufacture of chemicals such as ammonia. In addition, exposure to carbon dioxide is not associated with any health side consequences. The only drawbacks to dry cleaning with CO2 are that it isn't able to cleanse as effectively as perc can and the equipment used to make it is very expensive so the higher cost is passed onto the consumer.

An environmental virtue is moderateness. This being said, green dry cleaning can be accomplished if you do not dry clean at all or limit your use of dry cleaning services by using dry cleaning kits that you can use at home for items with less visible spots and stained areas or that need to be cleaned. Professional dry cleaning is a massive process that uses a lot of energy, and generates a lot of waste that is in form of residue, sludge and wastewater. If the dry cleaner is using perc (it is still allowed in many states) These substances pose a risk. Dry cleaning at home requires nothing more than just a Dry Cleaner's Secret cleaning cloth and your dryer. There are no toxic chemicals in the process and there's no garbage. chatiw

Perc is still the most efficient dry cleaning solvent, the use of natural cleaning products and home dry cleaning is beneficial to our health and our environment.
