39.

Lately, Apple has gained a lot of popularity everywhere. Many people are talking about switching from Windows to Mac, and I have been in countless arguments over which is better. (Note: To be fair, I will write an article later about why Macs are better than PCs.)

 40.
7 Reasons a PC is Better than a Mac:

 41.
1. Customisability

 42.
PCs are infinitely more customizable than Macs. Building your computer is straightforward; choose the necessary parts to suit your needs. There are infinite combinations and choices when it comes to making a PC. If you don’t want to make one, many people will make one that suits your needs. Retailers like Dell and HP also offer many PC customization options. Macs, however, are very limited. They often don’t use the latest Hardware for about a year, while PCs already have them. You don’t see any Macs with Core i7’s inside them. Any extras you want to add on will cost you a fortune; for example, adding an extra 4GB of RAM will cost you around $800, but if you have a PC, a similar upgrade for 4GB of DDR3 will cost a maximum of $200 but can be had for $150. This makes a PC much more affordable. There is so much choice for parts that you can make it look however you want. Apple only offers a few variations of their computers with little customization options at a price set way too high, not to mention the premium you pay for the Apple logo.

 43.

 44.
2. Hardware and Software Compatibility

 45.
Many people argue that Macs have enough software to keep them going. The fact is that if you have a PC, you have way more options. You have more choices when it comes to any software or Hardware. Every piece of software compatible with a Mac is consistent with a PC (except for the software made by Apple). PCs have way more choices when it comes to games, and any game on a PC will run better if you have a newer computer, as the latest Macs have outdated hardware. Mac users will always have to check if the Hardware or software they buy is compatible with Mac. Yes, you can run Windows on a Mac, but what is the point? If you will use Windows for everything, you might buy a PC. Not to mention, all the Office software for Mac is incredibly hard to use and completely illogical. Some basic commands that can easily be found on the Windows version of Office are complicated to see on a Mac. Not to mention, Mac users don’t get the slick new Ribbon interface of Office 2007.

 53.

 54.
3. Full Operating Systems

 55.
Apple charges its customers for minor updates to its Operating Systems (Service Packs). Microsoft gives these out for free and only charges users for a completely new operating system. This will significantly add to the cost of your Mac if you plan to upgrade every time Apple releases a new version of OS X. The new features given in these updates are pretty insignificant, and none have overhauled the OS. Is it worth the price tag?

 56.
4. Windows Explorer is Way More Powerful

 57.
Windows Explorer offers a lot more features than a finder. It provides easy cut-and-paste to move files around and offers window resizing from all corners or edges instead of just one. It is much easier to quit a program in Windows than on Mac by simply pressing the X button instead of Command+Q. Apple’s maximize button doesn’t even work properly.

 58.
5. Support

 59.
There are much more PC users than Mac users. This makes it easy for anyone with problems to find someone to help them. Many people know a lot about PCs; however, Apple’s community is limited, and there are fewer places to get help. Apple support also has a history of denying a problem exists even if it does. Not to mention, Dell’s and HP’s warranties cost much less than Apple’s Applecare.

 60.
6. OEM

 61.
Microsoft offers the OEM version of their operating system for much cheaper than the retail pack. Apple does not sell OEMs. Vista Ultimate used to retail for $799, but at the same time, the OEM cost around $280. This gives system builders much lower costs than Apple’s computers and is much more customizable when referring to point one.

 62.
7. Deleting Shortcuts works

 63.
Apple has a very visual OS, while Windows is more intuitive and logical. For example, you can just hit the delete key when you want to delete desktop shortcuts. When you want to do this on a Mac, drag the icon to the trash can. It has a cool effect, but it is so irritating. The menu bar on the Mac is also really annoying. When you minimize a program, the menu bar stays there, which becomes annoying when accessing other things, such as Finder. This makes using a Mac a real pain to use.

 75.

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard

 76.
A Mac’s operating system, Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, is faster, easier to use, and more reliable than Windows. It has built and maintained this position because Apple has based Leopard on a principle of constant innovation. You can, therefore, achieve more by doing less.

 77.
Apple has created comprehensive applications with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard to give you a fully rounded computer life at home or in the office. Every Mac has iChat, for example. This enables you to have four-way video chats and conferences and share the contents of your screen. You also receive iLife, software that beats anything a PC can offer for producing and enhancing music, photos, videos, and DVDs.

 78.
However, the most impressive part of Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard is Apple’s web browser, Safari. This is the fastest web browser on any platform globally, with features that are a pleasure to use. For instance, put a word in the “Find” box, and Safari highlights the matching text and dims the surrounding page, making searching even quicker to complete.

 79.

 80.
Leopard and Windows

 81.
Nonetheless, just because Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard is faster and better than Windows doesn’t mean that Apple ignores users new to Macs and more familiar with the Microsoft operating system. To make the transition from PC to Mac as smooth as possible, every Mac has Boot Camp. This allows you to run Windows just as though you have a PC.

 82.
You can also run Windows side by side with Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard if you wish. First, install Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMware Fusion, followed by Windows. You can then switch from Leopard to Windows as you please.

 83.
Other software

 84.
Another great feature of Macs is that every major software, including Microsoft applications such as Office 2008, is available in a Mac version. This is useful if you want to retain files on a Mac from your former PC. The Mac equivalent of the software enables you to continue using these files without abandoning them.

 92.

 93.
Moving files

 94.
Moving your files from a PC to a Mac is straightforward. Download the files to a USB or FireWire hard drive and then plug this into your Mac. Alternatively, use a network or ask your Apple shop to do the job.

 95.
Networks

 96.
There’s always a certain amount of pressure to conform to the computers used on a network at home or work. Macs can join any network wirelessly or with an Ethernet cable and function perfectly. As described here, if the other computers use Windows, you can easily load this and have the advantage of running the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard system.

 97.
Wi-Fi

 98.
All Macs have Wi-Fi capability for network and Internet connections. You don’t need to buy a separate wireless link: every Mac has Apple’s AirPort Extreme, enabling you to access the net wherever there’s a suitable Wi-Fi network.

 99.
Viruses

 100.
Of course, when surfing the net, most people know the ever-present danger of spyware and viruses. But Macs don’t need special anti-virus software because Apple constructs them on a stable UNIX foundation and ensures security is a key built-in feature. Apple maintains this security by offering regular free updates and having the Safari web browser warn you if you’re downloading a suspect file.

 101.
Dependability

 102.
It’s a load off your mind to trust a Mac’s resistance to viruses and spyware. Just as important is the confidence you can have in Mac’s reliability. Unlike many PC manufacturers, Apple creates each Mac’s hardware and software. This results in computers that are not a combination of different brands but holistic units.

 103.
The main advantages of this approach are consistent performance and high working speeds. When you switch on a Mac, it comes to life far more quickly than a PC, which takes a while to check the different aspects of its system. A Mac also crashes or freezes far less often than a PC because its components and applications work so well together.

 104.
Peripherals

 105.
This suggests using Apple brand peripheral devices such as printers, cameras, and hard drives. On the contrary, Apple installs hundreds of peripheral drivers in each Mac to recognize most peripherals when you connect them wirelessly or via the USB or FireWire ports. This means you speed up using a new device for the first time and keep Mac’s hard drive free of additional software.

 106.
Ease of use

 107.
Such ease of use is a characteristic owners cite as one of Mac’s chief benefits. Everything about a Mac is coordinated to produce a computer that fulfills a wide-ranging set of tasks in as simple a manner as possible without compromising creativity and fun. From the clarity of the display and ergonomic features of the keyboard to the most sophisticated graphics software, Apple has made each Mac’s hardware and software simple and accessible. This is why Macs prove so popular in schools and colleges.

 108.
Environmental concerns

 109.
These design considerations extend to the environmental impact of Macs. Macs are quiet to run and use the latest electrical developments to reduce power consumption. Apple also runs a trade-in and recycling scheme that ensures Macs are either refurbished and sold or are broken up with the least possible harm to the earth. This is another advantage of dealing with a company that takes its responsibility to you and the world very seriously.

 121.

The Mac Mini

 122.
The Mac Mini seems to be the obvious solution for a Mac Media Center. Its small design and low noise and heat make it a great candidate to fit in with your existing mix of stylish audio equipment. The Mini is a great little device; it has a nice processor, a DVD drive, some hard drive space, and enough ports to plug it into all the necessary equipment. The last thing you need is a big ugly tower case with noisy fans to sit next to your TV and destroy whatever audio fidelity you are trying to enjoy. And the Mac Mini has some sex appeal, too.

 123.
The iMac

 124.
The iMac is also a good candidate for a Mac Media Center, although its appeal differs slightly from the Mac Mini. In a limited space environment, the iMac can serve a dual purpose. It can be used as a desktop machine daily and switched to a Mac Media Center by night. The iMac comes in various sizes, from 17″ to 24″, so you have a few options depending on the available space and where you want to put it. The iMac has everything you need to use as a Mac Media Center.

 125.

 126.
The Rest of the Mac Pac

 127.
The Mac Pro, iBook, and Mac Book Pro aren’t as versatile as the Mac Mini and iMac but can be used as a Mac Media Center. The 17″ Mac Book Pro would make a nice mobile entertainment system, but not a dedicated media center. Using a Mac Pro as a Mac Media Center is insane. It’s like using a crowbar to open a can of beans. For the rest of the article, you’ll need some hardware to go with the Mac Media Center; I will use a Mac Mini as an example. I have a Mac Mini and have built a media center with it, so using my first-hand experience will hopefully be a little more accurate than speculating on what is possible if you have x…y…z…You will need some things to get your Mac Mini up and running as a Mac Media Center. Some of these devices are Apple devices, and some are generic devices. Some work well, and some are just a disaster.

 128.
Remotes for your Mac Media Center: The first device you must begin hunting for is a remote. After all, what good is a Mac Media Center without a remote that the family can fight about? The infamous Apple remote comes with most Mac minis and iMacs. It’s a small remote, but it works well. It comes in a typical Mac style. It’s tiny, does everything you need it to do, and has no fancy features. All in all, it only has six buttons that allow you to control the entire Mac Media Center.

 129.
There are also several generic remotes available. Logitech has many remotes, some working well with Mac and some being PC only. I have a Microsoft keyboard and remote and have been unable to get them going on the Mac. I would advise using the Mac remotely. It is small, and with half a dozen buttons, it is quite easy to use. For instance, my DVD player’s remote has 47 buttons, most of which I have never used, and I don’t have the slightest inclination to find out how they work. You’ll also need a keyboard for your Mac Media Center Edition. Of course, there are those times you need to input some data into the screen, like in iTunes. For instance, you might need to enter your password when purchasing content. No one wants to keep jumping off the couch to press a button; we barely find the energy to get up for another beer.

 138.
Apple has a nice Bluetooth keyboard that you can use from your couch. It looks like a normal Apple keyboard, yet it has no cables and fits a couple of batteries at the back. This is a must for your media center. It would help if you had a keyboard occasionally, and having to crawl out from under a warm blanket in the middle of winter can spoil the mood. Of course, Logitech and a few others have keyboards that would work just as well. But pairing an Apple Bluetooth keyboard with the built-in Bluetooth in a Mac Mini is easier than making toast.

 139.
Add some storage to your Mac Media Center. If you have ever spoken to anyone about a media center for digital media, the word storage would have popped up several times. The Mac Mini, at best, will only have an 80GB hard drive, and when downloading movies, TV shows, and music, adding your CDs, and dumping your digital pictures, you can devour disk space rather rapidly. So, before you know it, you’ll be hunting for a storage device. Now you have a couple of options as far as storage is concerned.

 140.
You can connect something directly to your Mac Media Center, like a USB or Firewire drive, or click a Network Attached Storage Device. The difference comes in when you consider what you want to do with your storage. A USB or Firewire drive is a great option if you wish to store media content purely for media and want it to be available only to the Mac Media Center. But if you have more than one computer on your network, like most households today seem to have, you might want to consider a network-attached storage device, also known as a NAS. The software you will need once you have decided on which Mac you want to use is a Mac Mini, in my case, and you have your remote and keyboard ready. You have some idea of where you are going with extra storage in the not-too-distant future; you need to sit down and consider what software you want to use with your Mac Media Center.

 141.
You have about a dozen options. I’ve looked at many of them and narrowed it down to 3 that I think you should consider. The best way to decide which media center application you want is to install all 3, use them for a week or two, and then choose. My Mac Mini came with the front row, which I decided to use. But here is a breakdown of the 3 I suggest: Front RowFront row is an Apple application and comes on most Mac Mini’s. It’s a simple interface, looks like an iPod’s interface, and has that glass effect. It’s a very cool interface and makes your TV look like it’s in a league.

 142.
Center StageCenter Stage is an open-source application for a Mac Media Center. It’s a good design, and there’s ongoing support and development. Center Stage is much more customizable than the front row and allows several skins to be installed. Center Stage also has additional plugins to make your Mac Media Center do more. This is just a friendly warning when using non-Apple software on an Apple machine, especially when it’s open-source. Make sure you run the stable version. Running a beta version could cause unwanted interruptions during your romantic movie, resulting in a night on the couch.iTheatreiTheter is also an open-source Mac Media Center.

 143.
It aims to work on just about every Mac ever. Well, maybe not ever, but at least in the last few years. The heater also has the best user interface (UI) out of the 3. It integrates many other features and can also display the weather. Once you have your mac mini, remote, keyboard, storage, and UI sorted, you need to consider some add-ons to make the whole media center thing a little more enjoyable.DVI-HDMI ConnectorTo enhance your picture viewing quality, and if your TV supports it, get a DVI to HDMI converter.

 144.
The Mac Mini has a digital output, and if you can keep your production digital straight into the TV, you will benefit from the video quality. While HDMI supports audio, DVI does not. So, using a DVI to HDMI converter will drop your audio, but it will maintain your video. You can use the audio minijack output from your Mac Mini to get audio to the TV. Your TV is not an add-on. I can’t imagine you have a media center without the TV. Like a car without an engine (I had one of those for a while, and it’s not so great). When choosing your TV, make sure your TV has some crucial components to accommodate a Mac Media Center. The most important is your input.

 145.
You need to, at the very least, have a VGA input. HDMI is preferable, but VGA is a minimum. Having audio in is another requirement. While you can get away with not having audio information on your TV, it’ll only make your life a little more complicated. Audio out would be the last piece of a nice puzzle. Connecting your TV directly to your sound system will enable you to control the audio volume on your Mac Mini from one central place. I’ll be posting an article on HDTV soon. Have a look at http://www.shawnsweekly.com for more info.iTunes forms the foundation of your digital content.

 146.
I’ve been using Front Row, and it integrates nicely into iTunes. So when I flip through the menus, it’s like flipping through iTunes on an iPod interface. Using iTunes means downloading movies, TV shows, and music from the iTunes store. Once the media has been downloaded, you can access it and watch it with a button. This is a straightforward integration and is automatically done for you. Using iTunes to add your CD library to your computer is another great feature.

 147.
You can click the remote from your media center and play your entire music collection. Alternative For anti-mac and those who want to benefit from the Mac form factor but want to run MythTV or Vista Ultimate, you can do that. Download Bootcamp from Apple, load your favorite OS, set up your Media Center, and go off. The Mac Mini offers you the best of both worlds. You can run Mac OSX, Windows, or Linux and set up your Media Center however you want.

 159.

I don’t think you need a PC to be a successful Internet marketer, but I am not anti-Windows! I think that competition is a good thing. I would not necessarily want the world to have a choice of only one operating system, even if it happened to be the one I prefer. Of course, in a perfect world, the market share of the main competitors would be closer to 50-50, but of course, we don’t live in an ideal world. (Actually, in an ideal world, the market share should be divided by about 33% among the top three competitors, Windows, Mac, and Linux, with the remaining 1% share available to give someone else a bit of a chance to break through with a new OS!)

 160.

 161.
Admittedly, it is easier to find software for the PC than for the Mac; it’s just that Internet marketing is not one of them. I saved this chapter for last because I know no Windows-only program is essential for the Internet marketer.

 162.
However, if you are a switcher migrating to the Mac from the Windows platform, you might want to take a favorite pet application you have grown accustomed to using. Or, as a Mac user, you may not be able to resist trying out one of the shiny Internet marketing baubles that are available only for Windows.

 163.
However, the Windows side of the Internet marketing world is indeed littered with junk. There are hundreds of free, cheap, and expensive, overhyped products that are not worth wasting your time with. Fewer applications run natively on the Mac, but those that do tend to be the cream of the crop.

 171.

 172.
But if you need to run Windows programs on your Mac, you can. I was shocked when Steve Jobs announced that the Macintosh world was switching over from PowerPC to Intel chips some years ago. Maybe I was misled by the marketing hype machine, but I did think that PowerPC was superior. I also wondered if Windows apps could run on the Mac, meaning developers would stop creating software for the Mac platform.

 173.
I needn’t have worried. There are enough rabid fans of the Mac that Mac’s place in the computing universe is assured. In reality, switching to Intel processors gives Mac users wonderful flexibility to run Windows programs if needed while staying with the Mac platform they prefer. Intel on Macs means that Macs can run Windows and Windows applications natively without the speed-sapping emulation necessary for the days of PowerPC. In short, that means that Windows and Windows applications can run just as fast on the Mac as they can on an HP or Dell box.

 174.
Boot Camp

 175.
Apple makes this easy with its software utility called Boot Camp. Included with every Macintosh over the past few years, it allows you to run Windows and Windows applications right on your Macintosh (of course, you also have to buy and install a copy of Windows for your Mac).

 176.
Run Boot Camp Assistant, which you will find in the utility folder, and you will be able to partition your Mac’s hard drive and allocate a certain amount of space for the Windows operating system. You insert your Windows disk and click Start Installation in the Boot Camp assistant. Then, you can boot to Windows simply by holding down the option key at startup. Your Mac will start running Windows, and you will, for all practical purposes, be using a PC.

 177.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and VMWare Fusion

 178.
If you want to run Windows and Mac applications side-by-side, without needing a restart, along with a copy of Windows, you will need to purchase Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMWare Fusion. If you are in the market for a new Mac, some resellers (such as MacMall) often throw in a copy of Parallels Desktop for Mac or VMWare Fusion along with it for free (but you will still need to buy a copy of Windows). Of course, you’ll want to have a decent amount of our RAM installed on your computer since you will be running two operating systems simultaneously.

 179.
This is not as clunky as it may sound. For example, Parallels allows you to switch from a Mac application to a Windows program simply by clicking the appropriate application window. You can even set the software to hide the Windows OS: all you see is the Windows program’s application windows. The windows are resizable, and their icons appear in the Mac OS Dock.

 180.
The Windows taskbar can appear on any edge of the screen, just as when running Windows natively, although you will want to move the Mac OS Dock to a different edge. This “Windows as a taskbar only” mode is called “Coherence Mode,” in using it, it’s easy to forget that you’re even running Windows on your Mac. Alternatively, you can make your Mac look like a Windows machine by switching to full Windows mode. On the other hand, If you only need to run one or two Windows programs, you may not need to buy a copy of Windows at all.

 181.
CrossOver for Mac

 182.
CrossOver for Mac (CodeWeaver Software) allows you to run many Windows applications on your Mac without installing Windows! It does this by installing native Windows libraries, which tricks Windows programs into thinking they’re running on a real Windows operating system.

 183.
Of course, there are some limitations, the main one being that not all Windows applications are compatible. CodeWeavers offers a 30-day trial to find out if your favorite application is. Crossover Mac comes in two versions: Standard ($40) and Professional ($70). The professional version offers support for games, multiple users, volume and educational discounts, and longer and better support.

 184.
My recommendation: get CrossOver Mac if you need to run only one or two Windows applications, and your testing with the trial version indicates that they will run properly, or install Windows and use Apple’s Boot Camp if you don’t mind restarting your Mac to run your Windows applications; otherwise, invest in Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion.

 196.

I will take you through building a Mac Media Center in this article. Since Apple announced the Mac Mini, everyone has been discussing building a Mac Media Center and using a Mac Mini. Which Mac Should You Get? Many Macs are on the market, and you must consider who you will use your Mac Media Center to decide which Mac will suit your needs the best.

 197.
The Mac Mini

 198.

 199.

 200.
The iMac

 201.
The iMac is also a good candidate for a Mac Media Center, although its appeal differs slightly from the Mac Mini. In a limited space environment, the iMac can serve a dual purpose. It can be used as a desktop machine daily and switched to a Mac Media Center by night. The iMac comes in various sizes, from 17″ to 24″, so you have a few options depending on your available space and where you want to put it. The iMac comes standard with just about everything you will need to

 209.
Use it as a Mac Media Center. The Rest of the Mac Pac. You’ll need some hardware to go with the Mac Media Center. For the rest of the article, I will use a Mac Mini as an example.

 210.
Remotes for your Mac Media Center: A remote is the first device you must begin hunting for.

 211.
There are also several generic remotes available. Logitech has many remotes, some working well with Mac, and some only PC.

 212.
Apple has a nice Bluetooth keyboard that you can use from your couch. It looks like a normal Apple keyboard, yet it has no cables and fits a couple of batteries at the back. This is a must for your media center. It would help if you had a keyboard from time to time, and having to crawl out from under a warm blanket in the middle of winter can spoil the mood. Of course, Logitech and a few others have keyboards that would work just as well. But pairing an Apple Bluetooth keyboard with the built-in Bluetooth in a Mac Mini is easier than making toast. Add some storage to your Mac Media Center. If you have ever spoken to anyone about a media center for digital media, the word storage would have popped up several times. The Mac Mini, at best, will only have an 80GB hard drive, and when downloading movies, TV shows, and music, adding your CDs and dumping your digital pictures, you can devour disk space rather rapidly. So, before you know it, you’ll be hunting for a storage device. Now you have a couple of options as far as storage is concerned.

 213.
The difference comes in when you consider what you want to do with your storage. You can connect something directly to your Mac Media Center, like a USB or Firewire drive, or click a Network Attached Storage Device. A USB or Firewire drive is a great option if you want storage purely for media content and is available only to the Mac Media Center.

 214.

 215.

 216.
It aims to work on just about every Mac ever. Well, maybe not ever, but in the last couple of years. The heater also has the best user interface (UI) out of the 3. It integrates many other features and can also display the weather. Add once you have your mac mini, your remote, keyboard, storage, and UI sorted, you need to consider some add-ons to make the whole media center thing a little more enjoyable.DVI-HDMI Connector: To enhance your picture viewing quality, and if your TV supports it, get a DVI to HDMI converter. The Mac Mini has a digital output, and if you can keep your output digital straight into the TV, you will benefit from the video quality. While HDMI supports audio, DVI does not. So using a DVI to HDMI converter will drop your audio, but it will maintain your video. You can use the audio minijack output from your Mac Mini to get audio to the TV.your TV is not really an add-on; I can’t imagine you have a media center without the TV. Like a car without an engine (I had one of those for a while, and it’s not so great). When choosing your TV, make sure your TV has some crucial components to accommodate a Mac Media Center. The most important is your input.

 217.

 218.
I’ve been using Front Row, and it integrates nicely into iTunes. So when I flip through the menus, it’s like flipping through iTunes on an iPod interface. Using iTunes means that you can download movies, TV shows, and music from the iTunes store. Once the media has been downloaded, you can access it and watch it with the click of a button. This is a straightforward integration and is automatically done for you. Using iTunes to add your CD library to your computer is another great feature. And from your media center, you can click the remote and play your entire music collection. Alternatively, you can do that for anti-mac and want to benefit from the Mac form factor but want to run MythTV or Vista Ultimate. Download Bootcamp from Apple, load your favorite OS, set up your Media Center, and off you go. The Mac Mini really offers you the best of both worlds. You can run Mac OSX, Windows, or Linux and set up your Media Center the way you want.

 230.

Lately, I have been posting a lot of business stuff, and it seems I have been neglecting my EzineArticles account for a few months. Today, I thought I would write about something more fun and compelling than the same boring business jargon. I decided to write about flight simulation and which games I prefer that provide the most realistic flight simulation experience.

 231.
You will find several different flight simulation games; some are designed for just 1 or 2 specific aircraft, some are online games, some don’t need to be online, and others provide their equipment and use separate gaming technology that does not run on your PC.

 232.
I prefer computer flight simulator games. The things to look for in a flight sim game include feature support… It is not a good game if it does not support your pedals and yoke equipment. Games that don’t adopt professional equipment usually aren’t worth the money in the long run and are much more limited. Do you want a fun you will master too quickly that only features a few aircraft? Chances are not, so having a flight sim with hundreds of real Aircraft is better.

 233.

 234.
Are you looking for a fake sim game to have fun? Or do you want a simulator based on real-life terrain, with tens of thousands of real airports, that allows you to change all weather settings and make the game as realistic as possible? I would say it’s the latter. If you are interested in a real game, I suggest you keep reading.

 235.
I was informed about “Pro Flight Simulator” by a good friend. He recommended the game not only for its 120+ Aircraft, 20,000 airports, and three bonuses, including a combat game, scenery designer, and flight planner. He also suggested it because you can add your custom graphics!

 236.
The graphics in the game are open source, and it does come with great pictures, but if you are an artist and photoshopper, this comes in handy, as you can virtually replace whatever views you want with your own better ones. Thus completely customizing the game.

 253.
I enjoy some features regarding “ProFlight Simulator,” the Awesome Helicopter selection. Old and new Aircraft. Military Jets.\ World wide scenery, fly over your house: realistic controls, night lighting, full weather conditions, extremely accurate schools. ProFlight Simulator is used in professional flight training. It supports all kinds of equipment, like the yoke, foot pedals, throttle, and almost everything else—full support for Windows and Mac systems. Thriving community. Since the game is open-source, it’s always being upgraded. Free updates are provided with a one-time subscription payment at a reasonable price for all you get. 254.
To name a few of the best features. This already beats out any other flight simulator I’ve tried, including the pain-in-the-butt Microsoft Simulator, which should be a better game after years of development but is not. Similar to the security of their operating systems. Not to say I don’t like Microsoft, but I am very critical; when I found ProFlight, I realized that there were better games out there and that I had been a bit blinded by Microsoft since it was one of the first major simulators.

 255.
By now, it should be fairly obvious why I chose to review ProFlight Simulator. I have played the game for a month; I’m still having fun toying with Aircraft. The game is years and years of entertainment, a learning resource, fun, strategic, and more.

 256.
All the things I was looking for in a flight sim game are covered in one piece of software and a few bonuses that come with it. Realism, educational value, customization, joystick, yoke, peddle, and throttle support. Flight training. A huge selection of Aircraft, jets, planes, helicopters, military, and various types. Over 150 aircraft… Combat, scenery design, and flight planning.

 268.

Since the book has been with us, parents and “concerned individuals” have raised “causes” against certain publications. Video games are now their latest target after their efforts in the film industry failed.

 269.
There is some evidence that suggests violent computer games influence pre-teens. This is said to lead to more aggressive behavior. It’s been linked to attacks that have led to severe injuries and, unfortunately, deaths. I do not argue with this and agree that those under 18 should not play violent games. You’ll never stop them, though!

 270.

 271.
When I was (a lot!) younger, it was not hard for my friends to lay their hands on a copy of the latest 18-rated film offering. Banned films were rarely a problem, too. I’m sure it’s the same for many my age and current pre-teens. I can safely say I was never inclined to reproduce any of those acts shown! I did know kids who went around with knives, mainly to show off. However, they were the ones who didn’t play video games!

 272.
Because of the complexity of this subject, I decided to do some research, like all good writers. And like all good writers, I wanted evidence to support what I thought I knew! None of my newfound sources could agree on this issue, and I found lots of conflicting evidence. For example, an interesting book was written called “Grand Theft Childhood.” This describes a study of over a thousand children and their games. They concluded that there is indeed a link between violent computer games and aggressive behavior towards others. On the other hand, they also say that not playing these games can increase a child’s level of aggression!

 273.
What’s going on here? Surely it’s one way or the other?

 274.
When considering this, I wondered if it was just a lack of violent games or a lack of playing games altogether. After all, everyone needs to de-stress. Perhaps killing virtual coppers and pedestrians is more stress-busting than a few hours of Zuma for some people? Again, calling upon my experience, I was only allowed a certain amount of time on games when I was younger. Perhaps it’s the parents’ fault for their lack of game time monitoring? I’m not sure that fits, though, since you’d only have to briefly see that kind of on-screen action to become desensitized to it.

 282.

 283.
So, is the answer to stopping making these games? Are RockStar and other game studios to blame? Surely, eliminating violence from games will reduce the level of violent crime in the pre-teen demographic? Does anyone seriously believe that?

 284.
There will always be violence; as a species, we’re violent, greedy, and mean. That will not change overnight nor with the removal of such games. And unless you’re going to shut down the BBC, hide all the newspapers, and throw out your television, you’ve got no chance of removing violent and disturbing images from a child’s upbringing!

 285.
Maybe we should look into the root of violence. Again, like any good researcher on the project, I typed “causes of violence” into Wikipedia. I found an interesting section about a US organization called the “US National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence.” There was a fascinating quotation they made in 1969 (40 years ago!) which went like this:

 286.
“Children are inclined to learn from television because it is never too busy to talk to them, and it never has to brush them aside while it does household chores.”

 287.
The organization was set up in 1968, so it took them one year to conclude. So, should we look again at the parents? Have you seen the movie “Cable Guy” starring Jim Carrey? He plays a cable repair technician who severely lacks social awareness due to watching too much television as a child. Because of this, he doesn’t quite know how to interact with people. Does this mean that parents are sitting their kids down in front of the television rather than teaching them life lessons personally? Are they violent in response to a lack of parental concern? I’m afraid I must disagree in good conscience, however much I’d like to. You could quite easily argue that it’s the violent messages on television that encourage violent behavior.

 288.
There may be some truth there, too. Maybe kids can pick up behavioral traits from a video game; I know my friends, and I do so from films. I’m not talking about violent features specifically here. But then, when parents see them acting out skits from these films, do they panic? Do they question where they’ve learned these bad words or strange phrases? However, the distinction between virtual and reality normally prevents these traits from “spilling over” into daily life. This is where I feel the major problems start. Why some people have trouble with this distinction is not my area of expertise. However, we’ve all heard on the news of someone re-enacting a film or game, and it goes wrong. This is normally because one of the participants has taken it far too seriously. In these situations, I cannot help but believe that the individual in question is just plain mental!

 289.
On that note, is it the individual who has a problem? Has the issue had nothing to do with violent games but rather that some kids have psychological conditions? I’m sure this is certainly true in some extreme cases. But taking all things psychological and putting games/films aside, what other conditions spark violence?

 290.
It’s widely believed that disagreements are usually the precursor to violent behavior. It’s quite rare that someone thumps someone for no reason. So, the disagreement escalates and reaches a point where dialogue no longer serves a purpose. Sometimes, the reasons for the disagreement can be quite tenuous, and it appears widely considered that Video games are often used as an excuse in these cases. After all, who wants to appear in court and say they killed someone because of “what he said about my football team”?

 291.
That brings us back to the main issue. Can PC and video games be used as an excuse for this behavior? Are they the influence that has caused person A to harm person B? Would they have attempted to resolve their differences calmly if person A had not played Video Game C? There doesn’t appear to be any proof that video games had any influence other than the individual or parents using it as an excuse. There have been studies, of course, but they appear largely non-conclusive.

 292.
You cannot blame violent behavior on video games alone. They could contribute to some degree in some cases. But then, so can TV, newspapers, and even books. However, the vigor with which some individuals blame video games is unwarranted. Having been with us for so long, violent behavior is a product of all influences and the environment. There is no single answer.

 293.
Not so much as a speeding ticket here. I’ve played many violent games, and they’ve not affected me. Therefore, I believe anyone blaming games for their behavior is using them as an excuse. Either that or they don’t understand how they’ve been influenced by other factors such as friends, environment, or parents.

 306.
Read this article and learn some of the basics of video game design for the PC platform. You’ll learn some of the important things that any computer game designer should know. You’ll find out how web-based games compare against standalone games and the difference between concave and convex for 3D collision detection.

 307.
Web-based versus Standalone Games First, let’s start with some definitions. Web-based games are developed to be run within a browser, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer. Standalone games are designed to run independently without significant assistance from other software. Now, let’s get the real info: how to use each type of game best. Web-based games are, of course, best used for websites. Some of the basics described can also be applied to other platforms. Flash is the most common format for web-based games; however, Java is sometimes used, but I do not recommend this language.

 317.
The best way to sell a web-based game is to offer a license that allows people to change the game and promote their site or product. Selling the source code is also possible. Web-based games can also add content to your site and incentivize people to keep visiting the site.

 318.
On the other hand, standalone games are usually developed through an IDE (Integrated Development Environment).

 319.
An IDE is an all-encompassing development environment where software code can be developed from start to finish. Of course, selling to prospective gamers is the main way of generating profits from standalone games.

 320.
Standalone games can also incorporate advertising from other companies to generate additional profit, though this must be balanced with the gamer’s entertainment needs. You must use third-party tools and the main software development tool to develop your games’ media, such as graphics, sounds, etc.

 321.
Interestingly, some tools that produce flash games can also create standalone games from the same original code. Adobe Flash is one such tool.

 322.
Here’s a final tip: Always look for free or possibly open-source tools for programming games before considering more expensive commercial tools. You’ll be surprised at what tools you can find for free or at a meager price these days.

 323.
Difference Between concave and convex for for3-DD collision: The objects you see in 3-DD games almost always use simpler 3-DD meshes to simulate collisions. This is to save on processor usage.

 324.
Most game physics engines use convex meshes to simulate collisions between objects and calculate raytracing.

 325.
Why? Because using convex meshes allows for much more optimized collision detection than concave meshes and other arbitrary meshes.

 326.
Modern engines are increasingly adding support for other meshes in collision detection, but using convex meshes always remains the fastest method.

 327.
Here is an important difference in plain language. Concave meshes have at least one “dent” or one inward curve. Convex meshes have no inward curves. As a result, it’s important to know the difference between concave and convex. How do you tell what is concave and what is convex? The simplest method that I recommend is the line test.

 328.
A convex mesh will never let a straight line pass through more than two polygons, no matter where the line is drawn. A concave mesh, however, allows a line to pass through two or more polygons. What to do with more complex objects, you ask? Using simple convex geometry for collisions is fine for simple 3D things, but sometimes, more complicated 3D objects need finer simulation. The answer is simple: Use multiple convex meshes to handle collisions for complex 3D objects! I hope you have learned some computer game design basics from this article.
342.

Our industry is dying. We all know that the so-called “Next Generation” consoles drive our beloved PCs out of the market. I could list the reasons why this is happening...I could even record why it should not be happening, but to those interested in reading this, I know you’re already intimately familiar with our predicament. It has crept upon us. Honestly, some great PC games have been released over the past couple of years that have satisfied my gaming needs, but a few days ago, I had a rude awakening into this new world of “console-only” games that have unleashed a beast inside of me.

 343.
As a side note, I should say that I don’t have any problem with the Xbox360, the PS2, or the Wii other than the fact that they are killing the industry that I love…the industry that I grew up with. Anyways, back to my rude awakening. Many of you have heard about LucasArt’s new title, “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed,” which will be released this fall. Many of you have also heard that it will not be released for the PC. Not now, not ever. Judging from the trailers and new technology that has gone into this game, it looks like it would be addictingly fun and could even be my favorite of the year. However, according to the game producers, the PC market is not stable enough for this title. In other words, there aren’t enough people out there with computers that would be able to handle the game. (Ironically enough, it is being released on the Nintendo DS and the Wii, neither of which are high-performance gaming systems.)

 344.

 345.
What has happened? I played Star Wars games on the PC for over ten years when the X-Wing series and “Rogue Squadron” were coming out. And now LucasArts won’t even port their major release to the PC for their most loyal fans? The situation is bad and is on course to get much worse. After all, this is just one of the many games that have already been excluded from the PC. So, is it time for PC gaming to become extinct? Should we relinquish our fully customizable gaming platforms and surrender to the standardized systems that corporate stooges accept? I say NO!!!

 346.
But what will it take to survive in this industry? How can we regain our prowess in the world of video games? We have to be smart. We can no longer rely on our superior numbers to guarantee acknowledgment and preferential treatment in the biz, so we must rely on our superior brainpower to win this war (That’s right, console fans…I said it…we’re smarter than you). We can no longer rely on unorganized petitions that half of us won’t even see. What Should We Do?!?!

 355.
We must get organized. We must understand that we are an extremely marketable, niche group of people catered to by game development companies. Let’s face it: computer games are generally pretty nerdy…I’m guessing there’s not one of us who couldn’t set up a simple website if need be, not one of us who isn’t doing some serious online surfing every day, not one of us who wouldn’t love to work for Tom’s Hardware full-time, and the list goes on. Yes, there are only a few hundred thousand of us, and compared to the millions of console gamers out there, it’s pretty hard for us to get attention these days. But we are all interested in Computer hardware and games, and as a unified community, we could become mighty again. Remember, 500,000 games times $40 equals $ 20 million, which is plenty to make some pretty awesome games.

 356.
So here are some ideas for what the computer gaming industry needs:

 357.

 358.
A database of all the world’s computer games and their systems.

 359.
A well-maintained forum to discuss important events and plans.

 360.
Elected leaders to attack those who deny us.

 361.
A website devoted to keeping PC gamers informed on industry news.

 362.
Polls to decide which games we will support and which we will protest.

 363.
A group of ninjas to kill console games………….. maybe not that one…..but maybe.

However, it wasn’t always the case! FPS games were once only considered great for their engine and available weapons. However, the Half-Life series and Deus Ex changed all of that. When I look back at my (too many) years of gaming experience, all the games I remember had great writing. Well, there’s a reason for this:

 377.
The badly written ones weren’t worth remembering!

 378.
I had to go through my loose game disc collection to find the ones I’d forgotten. These include some pretty big-name games, starting with “Black and White” by Lionhead. This is a good example of where they were too interested in the engine and game mechanics to work on a story that engaged the player. There was far too much emphasis on the controls and the belief system used to influence the world, and I felt I was merely watching a game rather than being part of its story.

 379.
Another example of bad storytelling and computer game writing, in general, has to be “Doom3”. This has always been one of ID Games’ problems. The reasons I’ve heard for this revolve around the games being made to showcase the engine.

 387.

 388.
So why should developers care about computer game writing? What does it bring to a game? Let’s start with believable characters with which the player can identify and connect. Or an engaging plot that draws the player in. Or an interesting setting that provokes an emotional response, such as a bustling city or vast, uninhabited wasteland. Although many of these aspects are thought up by the game designers, someone needs to bring the game to life using these features. Valve has always been a pioneer in computer game writing, having its dedicated writer as a science fiction writer, Mark Laidlaw. He has helped shape Gordon Freeman’s story since the first Half-Life game and keeps the plot and characters interesting. The intrigue brought to these games by his writing keeps fan discussion going for months before and after each release.

 389.
Another well-written game is Deus Ex, which had two dialogue writers! The results were obvious: believable and thoughtful dialogue, interesting characters, and a story so in-depth it makes the Grand Canyon look shallow.

 390.
Something else good writing can provide is the different choices a player must make during a game. In the game Bioshock, you often encounter characters known as “Little Sisters,” who are genetically altered children. Your disturbing choice here is to either restore their DNA to normal or to extract their valuable essence for your means, killing the child in the process! These choices impact the story, influencing your character’s moral compass and the game’s result. But more importantly, it makes the player pause and think about the implications of their actions within the game. In this case, the writer is Ken Levine, also the writer for other favorites of mine, System Shock 2 and Thief: The Dark Project.

 391.
Computer game writing is one of those areas that game developers often overlook. An excellent writer friend of mine has mentioned that the number of outlets for aspiring writers is “vanishingly small,” which made me think. How many independent developers out there have a dedicated writer? When I was developing games, I really should have looked into it; it would have vastly improved the quality of my dialogue and helped me tie up loose ends in my story.

 392.
The independent title “Defence Grid: The Awakening” is an example of a fairly standard tower defense game vastly improved by its writing (and its voice acting) that may have fallen by the wayside otherwise.

 393.
Casual game developers, especially, are missing out on this. I’ve played far too many badly written attempts at fitting a story into a hidden object or match-3 game. I’m sure that secret object fans don’t care much, but it would be worth considering if they would like to attract a wider user base.

 394.
Even free games should make an effort in their writing. The wonderful “Cave Story” had a great story with memorable characters, and that’s after its translation from Japanese!

 395.
Good computer game writing does not necessarily mean instant success for any game. Nor does bad writing mean instant failure. However, I would argue that the most memorable games are the ones that have the best writing. The sequels to these are the games I am most looking forward to!
