Whether it’s the result of catastrophic flooding, spilling your drink or getting pushed in a pool at a party, many of our high-tech cell phones, tablets and computers are bound to suffer some sort of liquid damage at some point in their lives.

The good news is that many devices produced in the past few years — particularly many leading brands’ smartphones and tablets, such as Apple’s iPad — have some degree of built-in water resistance, so gone are the days when a simple splash would permanently fry a device’s hardware.

Apple’s brand new iPhone 14 product line, for example, has a water resistance rating of IP68, meaning that under ideal testing conditions, it can withstand depths of a maximum of 20 feet for up to 30 minutes. Users should always take a device’s stated resilience with a grain of salt, though. “Resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear,” Apple warns on its website, and that typically only applies to fresh water, so we don’t recommend trying to take any underwater photos in the ocean.

(If your liquid-resistant device has a cracked screen or any physical frame damage, that will compromise its water-tight seals too, so it’s always advisable to get any issues repaired as soon as possible.)

water-damaged device Restore

Contrary to popular belief, the “bag of rice trick” might actually end up damaging your smartphone, tablet or computer further, so Quick Mobile Repair doesn’t recommend leaving your water-logged device to sit in uncooked rice for any length of time. While the absorbent grains might soak up a bit of moisture, it’s more likely that they will just get stuck in the charging port, bend vital connector pins out of place, and clog your speakers with fine dust.

water-damaged device

Instead, a good first step is to dry the device thoroughly with a clean, dry towel to soak up any exterior moisture and to spray some compressed air into the charging port and loudspeaker holes — the two largest crevices where liquid is most likely to sit stagnant. It is also very important for both your health and the health of your device that you don’t try to charge it while it’s still wet!

It takes deceptively little liquid to damage a device’s delicate internal hardware. And remember, when trying to protect your device, time is the most important factor, so the best thing you can do is power it down immediately and bring it to a repair specialist as soon as possible.

For anything more than a light splash, or if you notice any change in your device’s performance after it comes in contact with water, bring it to the experts Quick Mobile Repair. We’re the nation’s one-stop device repair shop, and our highly trained Tech Gurus offer liquid damage restoration services for just about any device with a power button.

In most cases, our experienced technicians will be able to access your device’s internal components to carefully clean up any residual moisture and liquid while replacing faulty parts, restoring your phone to like-new condition in a matter of minutes. Devices with extreme liquid damage may not be worth repairing financially, though whether you have a water-logged hard drive or memory card, Quick Mobile Repair also offers data recovery services so none of your precious files, photos and memories will be lost.

No matter what sort of damage your device is facing, our Tech Gurus are standing by nationwide to assist seven days a week. We always offer free comprehensive device analyses and will be happy to recommend fast, affordable repair solutions to get any issues — liquid-related or not — fixed right the first time. Plus, all of QMR’s repair services are backed by our free One-Year Warranty.

Since it was introduced more than 10 years ago to replace your old-school 30-pin charging cable, Apple’s Lightning connector has reigned supreme among the tech giant’s devices, becoming the standardized port on all of the company’s recent iPhones. However, Lightning isn’t the only option out there for tech connections, even within Apple’s own device families.

Lightning cable

By far the most popular alternative is the USB-C connector, which is used widely in both the U.S. and abroad and features prominently on almost all other major smartphone, tablet and computer models released in the past several years. It’s reversible, charges quickly, and offers nearly identical benefits and performance to its Lightning counterpart. In fact, USB-C is even the compatible cable-and-port of choice on newer MacBooks and most iPads, leaving many users — including some of those loyal to Apple — to deal with two or more ports, cables and adapters for their daily tech needs.

But depending on how Apple responds to recent legal decisions, its proprietary Lightning connector may soon become a thing of the past.

What happened?

The potential death knell for the Lightning connector first came last summer, when lawmakers in the European Union passed a bill requiring all smartphones, tablets, cameras, laptops and virtually every other device to use the same universally compatible charging and connection technology: the USB-C.

Setting an enforcement date of December 28, 2024, the EU legislation was finalized after more than a decade of negotiations over the “common charger” law that’s designed to enhance user convenience in the long-run while also reducing e-waste, The Verge and other tech media reported.

Lightning cable

Then in December, India followed suit, passing legislation that requires all mobile devices to use the same type of connector port — the USB-C — by March 2025, according to Business Insider. (The Indian Bureau of Standards has since begun eyeing similar rules for wearable technology such as smart watches.)

And those two government decisions have indirectly given Apple, the largest single tech manufacturer that still makes devices with proprietary connection technology, an ultimatum: either start making iPhones, iPads and accessories with compliant USB-C ports in the next couple of years, or stop selling them in two of the world’s largest consumer markets.

What comes next?

At the most, Apple has roughly two years to make its next move, and it really only has three options: 1., stop selling its Lightning-based devices in Europe and India; 2., create special USB-C versions of them to only sell in those two markets; or 3., overhaul its iPhones and other devices to include USB-C technology worldwide, including where no such laws are in effect.

The problem for the Lightning connector’s future is that neither of those first two options makes much economic sense. Apple would stand to lose millions of dollars in sales alone if it pulled out of both the European and Indian markets, and creating two otherwise identical smartphone line-ups with different types of connection ports hardly makes manufacturing any easier.

More than likely, iPhone users will be facing a situation similar to the 30-pin-to-Lightning switch that happened with the introduction of the iPhone 5 in 2012: a temporary inconvenience that’ll result in some old technology lingering for a few years, but eventually, a near-universal abandonment of the former connector.

This prediction is bolstered by the fact that Apple itself has already embraced USB-C technology; it’s now the standard connector on all MacBook laptops and most iPad models. But with no official announcement from the California-based company as of yet, all we can do to forecast the Lightning cable’s future is wait and see.

The iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the world, with Apple selling more than 200 million units around the globe each year. How long do iPhones really last?

With smartphones, there are two primary factors to consider when thinking about their longevity: hardware and software.

The lifespan of your iPhone’s hardware will really depend on the environments that it’s exposed to and how often the phone is dropped, thrown, splashed or faced with other potentially damaging effects. Barring any manufacturer defects, such as a bloated battery that expands within the device and cracks your phone screen from the inside, your iPhone’s hardware can — in theory, at least — last forever. In fact, an original iPhone still in its box just fetched more than $60,000 at auction.

However, even with minimal wear and tear while using it, both internal and external components tend to wear out over time on most iPhones; this can include the speakers, charging port, and home button on older models. This may require certain parts of your smartphone to be assessed and replaced over time.

How long do iPhones really last?

You should also consider the cost to repair your device when asking yourself, “How long do iPhones last?” Smartphone repair is a sliding scale; generally, the newest phones are the most expensive to fix, while older ones tend to be cheaper. But with aging iPhones, sometimes they can become so obsolete that sourcing parts — and people with the knowledge to fix them — become cost-prohibitive. Because of this, the oldest iPhone that Quick Mobile Repair would recommend before its hardware becomes too out-of-date and unreliable is one approximately 5-6 years old.

However, an even larger concern when thinking about your iPhone’s lifespan is its software, which is controlled directly by Apple and is regularly updated with new features, security patches and conditions throughout the year. These increasingly large updates can slow down the performance of some older phones and outright cause features to stop working. (Apple’s most current mobile software, iOS 16, is not supported on anything older than the iPhone 8, which came out in 2017.)

How each individual software update affects your iPhone will vary on a case-by-case basis, but when both software and hardware longevity is considered, it’s often said that you should get a new iPhone every 2-3 years to ensure optimal performance.

Contact your nearest Quick Mobile Repair location to see if it’s time to upgrade your iPhone. We carry a wide variety of Certified Devices at all our stores nationwide and can help you save up to 30% on your next smartphone purchase.

The price increases about $200-$300 when it is anything other than the main screen. Unfortunately, this also means the back glass. For example, if you broke your iPhone 8 rear glass it would be a whopping $349.
The company’s new iPhone 14 lineup will bring a couple of key hardware changes, with its new iOS 16 operating system also overhauling your iPhone’s aesthetic

Apple just wrapped up its long-awaited “Far Out” keynote event, with the company’s CEO Tim Cook and a number of other executives taking to the stage in Cupertino, California on Wednesday to reveal some of Apple’s newest products including the iPhone 14, overhauled AirPods and Apple Watches and more.

Below, Quick Mobile Repair compiled a list of five of the biggest announcements and revelations from the event to help you stay up to date with what’s going on in the world of Apple. And in case you missed the event, which the company has typically held at its West Coast headquarters every September for nearly 15 years, you can also rewatch the livestream by clicking here.

The iPhone 14 has finally arrived

People have been speculating about the iPhone 14 for nearly a year, and Apple’s recent announcement has confirmed many of the rumors about the upcoming smartphone. Most importantly, there will actually be three versions of the device: the iPhone 14 with a 6.1” display and starting price of $799; the iPhone 14 Plus, featuring a larger 6.7” display and price tag of $899; and the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which include some extra hardware and have storage capacities of up to 1TB, which start at $999.

Five big takeaways

While the regular iPhone 14 and its Plus variants will use the same A15 processing chip found in their predecessors, the smartphones will be getting improved camera functionality and have eliminated a physical SIM card tray in favor of using “e-SIM” technology, among other changes. However, the Pro lineup will be powered by Apple’s best-ever A16 chip, and crucially, the devices’ controversial “notch” that cuts into the top of the display will soon be replaced by a pill-shaped cutout.

Apple Watch and AirPods get a major upgrade

In addition to unveiling the new iPhone 14 and its variants, Apple also used its keynote event this week to introduce other updated products. Chiefly, the company’s leaders announced the Apple Watch Series 8, SE and Ultra, the first two of which contain major upgrades from their predecessors and the last of which is a brand-new name in the Apple Watch family. The Ultra has a fairly large face with its rectangular display clocking in at 49mm, though it does have a couple of fitness-minded features and a truly flat screen, making it more durable for active users.

The Series 8 and SE are less significant changes, though both have become larger and include some potentially life-saving features, like the ability to detect if you’ve been in a car crash. All three devices will be available online and at Apple Stores nationwide in the coming weeks.

In addition to the Apple Watch news, the company also unveiled the next generation of its top-of-the-line wireless earbuds, the AirPods Pro. And while they look nearly identical to the previous generation of AirPods and still only come in white, Apple promises that its built-in H2 chip will deliver better noise cancellation. Plus, its case now includes a loop that you can attach a lanyard to, and a speaker on the bottom to allow better compatibility with Apple’s Find My app.

iOS 16 will be dropping next week

Apple has been testing its new iOS 16 operating system for months now, with early reports suggesting that it would feature a major overhaul of the lock screen’s look as well as include the ability to edit and unsend texts, allow Apple Pay to support “buy now, pay later” systems and more. And in addition to those features, which Apple confirmed on Wednesday, the release of iOS 16 will bring back an always-visible battery percentage to the top display bar, introduce intelligent photo cropping tools, and allow users to customize their lock screen with individual widgets—something many Samsung and Android phones have supported for years. Apple will launch the software update for compatible iPhones on September 12.

‘Dynamic Island’ may be coming to your screen

The “notch” on the iPhone 13 has been one of the most significant design challenges the former flagship device has faced and was expected to be a major talking point during Apple’s “Far Out” keynote—and as anticipated, Apple has delivered something of a solution: “Dynamic Island.” Called that because it appears to float at the top of the display and is somewhat interactive, with users able to tap it and expand it across the entire width of the phone, it can adapt depending on how you use your iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max.

There’s no new iPad… for now

While Apple revealed a number of new products at its keynote event on Wednesday, one product line notably absent from the discussion was the iPad, the company’s top-selling tablet that has since branched into iPad Air, iPad Mini and iPad Pro models that come in a variety of sizes. Despite some rumors about a new entry-level iPad, Apple has so far remained silent, with the announcement of any new additions to the company’s tablet lineup unlikely to come before the end of the year.

Similarly, the upcoming iPadOS 16 operating system is also said to have hit a few roadblocks and won’t make it out of beta testing until October at the earliest—despite iPhone and iPad software updates traditionally being released simultaneously.
