Bunny lifespan is what we all have to take into account when adopting a pet rabbit. If you ever had to bury a hamster, a cat, or a dog, you know that all pets eventually die. That’s just nature.
How long do domestic pet rabbits live?
In short, 8 to 12 years. In the wild, rabbits live for 1 or 2 years. However, with the domestication of rabbits in the 20th Century, the lifespan of indoor rabbits can reach was extended.
A common mistake about bunny lifespan is that they live 3 to 6 years. If you find the right rabbit breed with good genes and know how to take care of a rabbit, they can live for more than 6 years. Most ‘successful’ bunnies will die when they are about 8 years old.
The oldest rabbit that ever lived was 16 years old. That is a double of a lifespan of an average pet bunny. There are also a few recorded bunnies who lived for 14 years. Small domestic rabbit breeds, for example, live longer than larger rabbit breeds.
I will outline how long do pet bunnies live in 3 key points:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>The average lifespan of different bunny breeds. For example, how long do Lionhead bunnies live?</li>
<li>What can we do to prolong the lifespan of our bunny?</li>
<li>What are the common causes of deaths in rabbits?</li>
</ol>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Average Lifespan Of Different Bunny Breeds</h2>
When picking a bunny breed, knowing the life expectancy of that particular bunny breed can be taken in account.
For example, which pet bunny will live longer, a Lionhead or a Flemish Giant?
In truth, it’s very difficult to tell which bunny breeds live longer. There are very few clues with which we can estimate a life expectancy of a different bunny breed.
According to Judith Pierce, adoptions director at the San Diego House Rabbit Society, “larger breeds often have a shorter lifespan than smaller rabbits.”
That means that, on average, small Lionhead should live longer than the big Flemish Giant. However, there are obviously numerous exceptions to the rule.
Some Lionheads can live for 10 years, other will unfortunately die after 3 years. How long pet rabbits live come down to two things:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Genes.</li>
<li>Nurture.</li>
</ol>
As bunny owners, we don’t have control over genes. However, the nurture of a rabbit is entirely in our control. Let’s look at what we can do to prolong the lifespan of our bunnies.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. How To Prolong Bunny Lifespan (Good Practices)</h2>
Today, domestic bunnies live longer because of better veterinary care and because bunny owners know better how to take care of a bunny.
Domestication is a big factor here. In the wild, rabbits live up to 2 years because of predators, diseases, and lack of nutrition. Domestic bunnies, on the other hand, don’t have to fear predators, we have vets to help with the diseases and we can educate ourselves to serve the best nutritional diet to a bunny.
Essentially, there are a number of ways which can prolong how long do bunnies live. These are:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Right indoor housing. Having a large playpen can prolong a bunny lifespan because a domestic bunny can move around. Additionally, high bunny hutches can be detrimental to how long bunnies live as pets. If they jump from a high place, they can injure their front legs. This will reduce lifespan.</li>
<li>Right bunny food. Bunnies can have a lot of gastrointestinal problems if they eat the wrong foods. Some house plants, for example, can be poisonous to rabbits. Enjoying a healthy and balanced bunny diet consisting of fresh hay, right vegetables, fruits, and rabbit pellets can help the bunny to live longer.</li>
<li>Having a good veterinarian. It’s smart to find a veterinarian even before you adopt a bunny. None of us is an expert in bunny diseases and bunnies, unfortunately, tend to be quite sickly pets. Obviously bunnies with good healthcare will live longer.</li>
<li>(Optional) Mental stimulation. Bunnies should be mentally stimulated with toys, cardboards, big playpens, and so on. Old bunnies are similar to old people; they tend to respond better if they have some sort of mental stimulation.</li>
</ol>
A good bunny owner can have a big effect on how long do pet bunnies live.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Why Bunnies Die? (Common Causes Of Death)</h2>
There are numerous causes of deaths that can shorten the lifespan of bunnies. The most prominent one that indoor rabbits face is gastrointestinal stasis. GI problems can occur in 1-year bunnies, 5 years bunnies, or 10-year bunnies. In short, GI problems don’t discriminate.
Reasons why a gastrointestinal statis can occur are various. These include:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Stress.</li>
<li>Dehydration. That’s why it’s important for bunnies to always have fresh water in their habitat.</li>
<li>Stomach blockage. Bunnies ingest their fur; this can lead to stomach blockage from fur balls. Cats can spit those out, bunnies can’t.</li>
</ul>
For us, it’s important to create a low-stress environment for a bunny and to supply them with fresh water and a balanced diet.
How to notice a GI problem that may shorten the life of a bunny? If a bunny doesn’t have a healthy appetite or/and if we notice a bunny is producing smaller droppings, we can suspect a GI stasis. In such a case, we should consider taking a bunny to a veterinarian.
Other less common causes of deaths in rabbits are:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Poisoning. Some house plants can be toxic to bunnies.</li>
<li>Heatstroke. Bunnies can overheat rather quickly. We should design a habitat that provides shade to rabbits.</li>
<li>Injury. Bunnies can injure their front legs if they jump from high places.</li>
<li>Infectious diseases.</li>
<li>Cancer.</li>
<li>Heart attack.</li>
</ul>
The best you can do is being aware your bunny can have such problems. When we notice something, we should take a bunny to a veterinarian ASAP.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Long Live Bunnies!</h3>
In summary, bunnies can become teenagers (live even 10 years or more). We need to take care of them as far as nutrition, habitat, and veterinarians are concerned.
With some luck, our bunnies can live a long and happy life.

When raising bunnies, the one thing we need to be careful about is what do bunnies eat. Small kits and even grown-up bunnies will nib and eat almost every vegetable, fruit, and even poisonous plants that we put in front of them.
Essentially, it is our responsibility as bunny owners to be picky about the food we feed the bunnies. If they are left to their own devices, there are a really good chance bunnies will get sick, have digestive problems like cramps and diarrhea, and, in general, enjoy an unhealthy rabbit diet.
That’s why they need us to help them choose a healthy diet. In this post, we will go through 4 key ‘food groups’ when it comes to bunny nutrition and feeding habits.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Can Bunnies Eat? (4 Regular Food Groups + Treats)</h2>
Bunnies are herbivores. That means they only eat plant-based foods. In the wild, rabbits will eat all kinds of fresh and dried grass, rich in dietary fibers. Additionally, rabbits can eat bark, seeds, and fruits in smaller quantities. These provide a source of healthy nutrition.
The diet of a house bunny should reflect the diet of a wild rabbit. That’s why a regular diet of an indoor bunny should consist of:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Vegetables (leafy greens, root vegetables, flower vegetables).</li>
<li>Fruits (small quantities as treats).</li>
<li>Fresh hay (No. 1 food for bunnies, should be available to bunnies always).</li>
<li>Rabbit pellets (made from quality hay).</li>
<li>(Optional) Bunny treats.</li>
</ol>
Bunnies have two favorites times of day to feed; in the morning and right before dawn. They should have a healthy supply of fresh hay and fresh water throughout the day.
Let’s look at a few pointers when choosing foods bunnies can eat:
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. What Vegetables Can Bunnies Eat?</h3>
Vegetables are the No. 1 nutrition source for rabbits. Leafy greens, for example, represent the bulk of fresh food a bunny should eat every day.
So where do the carrots come in? We have this image in our head that bunnies eat carrots; and they do in a limited quantity. Apart from leafy greens, bunnies can eat root vegetables like carrots and flower vegetables like broccoli. However, bunnies should eat a lot more leafy greens than carrots.
Here is a general rule when it comes to leafy greens: Every leafy green a human can eat is a safe choice for rabbit feed.
Below you will find 3 lists of vegetables bunnies can eat. The 1st list consists of leafy greens bunnies can (and should)eat every day. The 2nd list consist of leafy greens that bunnies can eat every other week (those have a higher content of oxalic acid that can negatively impact pH levels in bunnies gastrointestinal system). The 3rd list are other veggies such as celery, broccoli, and carrots bunnies should enjoy in limited quantity.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">List Of Leafy Green Vegetables Bunnies Can Eat Every Day</h4>
In the wild, rabbits will eat the leaves of vegetables that grow in the earth. For example, they will eat the green part of a carrot, not the orange part that is underground.
Here are the greens bunnies can eat all the time.
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Carrot tops. Bunnies prefer to eat the green part of the carrot, not the orange root.</li>
<li>Endive.</li>
<li>Kale. It doesn’t matter which type, bunnies will eat every variety of kale.</li>
<li>Green lettuce.</li>
<li>Romaine lettuce.</li>
<li>Wheatgrass.</li>
<li>Radicchio.</li>
<li>Cucumber leaves. The leaves are a delicacy for a bunny.</li>
<li>Arugula.</li>
<li>Ecarole.</li>
<li>Spring and turnip greens.</li>
<li>Mint and basil.</li>
<li>Cilantro.</li>
<li>Watercress.</li>
</ul>
Lettuce, for example, is readily available in local supermarkets throughout the year.

<h4 class="wp-block-heading">List Of Leafy Greens Bunnies Should Seldom Eat</h4>
Bunnies enjoy eating spinach and parsley as well. These veggies are rich in Vitamin C, for example, but they also have high content of oxalic acid. Too much of oxalic acid can lower the pH of bunny’s gastrointestinal system. In turn, this can lead to problems like bloating, diarrhea or worse.
That’s why these following leafy greens should be on bunny’s menu every other week and only in moderaton. Here is the list:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Green sprouts.</li>
<li>Spinach.</li>
<li>Beet greens.</li>
<li>Radish tops.</li>
<li>Parsley.</li>
<li>Mustard greens.</li>
</ul>
Again, choose only one of these leafy greens every week. Too much of these and the oxalic acid could cause problems in your bunny’s tummy.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">List Of Roots And Other Flower Veggies Bunnies Can Eat (Be Aware Of Sugar And Starch)</h4>
In the wild, a rabbit would have to dig to get to the root. That’s why pretty much the only root for a bunny can eat are carrots.
Non-leafy vegetables like carrots and broccoli can, however, have a relatively high starch and sugar content. A diet rich in sugar and starch can upset the gastrointestinal system of bunnies. As such, these foods are only recommended in moderation.
Mind you, a bunny will eat everything you put in from of it. Foods rich in sugar are their favorite; not only for us humans. That’s why we have to be the grown ups in the room and serve only modest amounts of these foods to a bunny. A few tablespoons should be more than enough.
Here is the list of foods bunnies enjoy eating:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Carrots (obviously).</li>
<li>Celery.</li>
<li>Green, red or yellow peppers.</li>
<li>Brussel sprouts.</li>
<li>Cucumbers.</li>
<li>Zucchini squash.</li>
<li>Broccoli (both the leaves and the stems can be fed to a bunny).</li>
<li>Red roses (no kidding, bunnies love rose leaves).</li>
<li>Any type of cabbage.</li>
</ul>
A bunny should eat about 1 cup per 2 lbs of body weight of vegetables every day. The highest quantity of veggies should come from the 1st list of leafy greens, supplemented by the 2nd list as well as the 3rd list.
Remember that eating food with high water content should be limited in quantity. We have described one good example of that in our post <a href="https://dailybunny.com/can-rabbits-eat-cucumbers/">Can Rabbits Eat Cucumbers</a>. Yes, they can, but in a limited quantity.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. What Fruits Can Bunnies Eat?</h3>
Yes, bunnies do eat fruits. In fact, the sugary fruits are their favorite food. As such, they can serve as a bunny treat.
And that’s just it – fruits should be considered a treat for a bunny. Something akin to a dessert for humans.
That means apples, peaches, and bananas should be fed only in moderation. On average, an adult bunny can eat a few tablespoons of fruit per day. Again, bunnies will eat all the fruit you put in front of them because they love all that sugar content. However, too much fruit is not a good idea if you ask the bunny’s gastrointestinal system.
Here is a list of fruits bunnies can eat:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Green, red, yellow apples (remove the stem and seeds).</li>
<li>Apricots.</li>
<li>Peaches.</li>
<li>Pears.</li>
<li>Bananas (just be careful with the quantity; bananas have high sugar content even for fruits).</li>
<li>Any kind of berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries).</li>
<li>Melons and pineapple (peel them before; bunnies can eat the skin but it’s the peeled fruit is a safer bet).</li>
<li>Plums (remove the pits beforehand).</li>
<li>Mango (without the skin).</li>
</ul>
Knowing how eagerly bunnies will eat any kind of fruit, you should measure how much you give them. For example, never give a bunny a full apple. That’s much too much sugar for a small bunny and the seeds contain small quantities of cyanide that may be harmful to a bunny.
The correct way to feed an apple to a bunny is to remove the stem and seeds. Cut it in 4 to 8 pieces and only feed one of these pieces to a bunny per day.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Fresh Hay (Should Be Available All The Time)</h3>
It’s true that rabbits are crepuscular. That means they will feed early in the morning and right before the dawn. However, when creating a bunny diet, you should always remember to make two things available at all times:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Fresh hay.</li>
<li>Fresh water.</li>
</ol>
These are two pillars of every bunny diet.

In the wild, a rabbit would graze all the time. To mimic that indoors, we have to leave fresh hay around for bunnies to nib on. The high fiber content of fresh hay will:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Help the bunny’s digestive system function properly.</li>
<li>Help move on the hairballs in bunny’s digestive system. Without hay or other fiber-rich food, there is an increased risk of blockage occurance.</li>
</ul>
One of the most common question is “What kind of hay should my bunny eat?”
If you have a kit (juvenile bunny), you should feed it alfalfa hay until for the first half a year. After that, an adult bunny should eat a mixture of different fresh hays. These include:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Timothy grass.</li>
<li>Bermuda hays.</li>
<li>Oats.</li>
<li>Brome.</li>
<li>Alfalfa hay.</li>
</ul>
Most shops sell a mixture of these hays. They simply call it ‘rabbit hay’. Check the ingredients list and you will see a variety of different hays that make up the ‘rabbit hay’.
Here are 3 tips when choosing the hay for your rabbit at a local pet store:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Make sure the hay is fresh. Squeeze it together with your fingers and smell it. Fresh hay shouldn’t have a stale smell.</li>
<li>Make sure the hay is dry. Increased water content leads to mold build-up.</li>
<li>Buy (at most) a 2-month supply of fresh hay.</li>
</ol>
If you buy a 2-month supply of fresh hay for bunnies, you also have to store it properly. Remember that hay, despite being dry, still has some moisture. You have to store it in a way to let that moisture out. A simple wooden basket, for example, would be a good way to store fresh hay.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Rabbit Pellets (Look For High Fiber Content)</h3>
Rabbit pellets are basically compressed fresh hay. They are packed with fibers and nutrients found in hay.
While hay should be available throughout the day, you can feed your bunny rabbit pellets in the morning and in the evening. Pellets, compared to fresh hay, are:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Easier to handle. Hay is voluminous, pellets are compact.</li>
<li>Bunnies can get a lot of high-quality fibers quickly.</li>
<li>Per pound, pellets are cheaper than the same amount of fresh hay.</li>
</ul>
Pellets are kind of a treat for a bunny as well. As with everything, you can have good and bad kind of rabbit pellets. When I’m buying rabbit pellets, I always follow these 3 rules:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Should be made out of grass hay.</li>
<li>Should have more than 20% fiber content.</li>
<li>Only buy 1-month supply of rabbit pellets. The larger supply, the higher probability of mold growth.</li>
</ol>
The low-quality non-grass hay pellets might be cheaper. Buying larger quantities of rabbit pellets will be cheaper per pound as well. High-grade fresh pellets are more expensive but you can get more fibers from that and bunnies, on average, respond better to pellets made out of grass hay.

Is it safe for rabbits to eat a cucumber?
Yes, rabbits can have cucumbers. Cucumbers are safe for rabbits to eat. In fact, most of them quite enjoy cucumbers and treat it as a juicy treat. Cucumbers have a high water content but low nutrition content; if a bunny will eat too much cucumber slices, they can develop a runny stool (rabbit diarrhea).
Whene adding cucumbers to a rabbit diet we need to be mindful about:

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which Parts Of Cucumbers Can A Bunny Eat?</h2>
Cucumbers consist of 3 parts:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>The flesh of a cucumber (mostly water).</li>
<li>Skin (higher nutritional value – vitamins and minerals).</li>
<li>Seeds.</li>
</ol>
Rabbits can eat all parts of a cucumber. However, it is important to take into account that a cucumber consists of 96% of water. Only 4% of cucumber can serve as nutrition to a rabbit.
Rabbits have to eat a lot of dietary fibers (hay, pellets) in order to avoid gastrointestinal issues. If they ingest a large amount of water (for example, by eating a whole cucumber), they might experience problems we’ll cover later on.
It’s important to know, nonetheless, that we don’t have to peel a cucumber or take the seeds out.
The skin of a cucumber is actually the most beneficial part of a cucumber; most of the nutrients are found there. We need to clean the cucumber before feeding it to rabbits. This is because it can be covered with toxic pesticides and heavy metals that can upset a bunny’s stomach.
Many fruits contain seeds that are toxic to bunnies. That’s why it’s important to ask if a rabbit can eat cucumber seeds. In this case, seeds can be safely ingested bunnies.
The flesh of cucumber has little nutritional value but provides a lot of water; almost too much water. When feeding a cucumber to a bunny you need to be aware that eating too much flesh can cause diarrhea.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How Much Cucumbers We Can Feed To A Bunny?</h2>
If you put a whole cucumber in front of a rabbit, chances are it will eat all of it. That’s exactly what you shouldn’t do.
At most, you should serve a cucumber slice or two 3-4 times per week. Thin slices of cucumber are a delicacy for rabbits.
Be conservative with the quantity at first. You want to see how bunny will respond to eating a cucumber. Prepare 1 thin slice of cucumber, feed it to a rabbit, and watch their stool.
If, for example, you will see a softer stool after feeding a cucumber slice, you should be especially careful with the quantity.
However, if you see that stool doesn’t change, you have a green light to increase the quantity of cucumber that can be safely fed to a rabbit.
Obviously, bigger bunnies like Flemish Giants can eat more slices. For smaller breeds like Lionhean, a thin slice is more than enough.
Observing the stool of a rabbit after it first eats a certain food is the general rule of how to introduce a new food to a rabbit. Never start with big quantities. Start small, then add quantity if the stool stays normal and there is no observable change in the bunny’s behavior.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Can Happen If A Rabbit Eats Too Much Cucumber?</h2>
If you ever ate too many cherries, you have probably experienced some stomach discomfort or even diarrhea. The same is with cucumbers and rabbits.
The high water content of a cucumber can turn a rabbit stool runny. What is more, if you keep feeding too much cucumber to a bunny in the long term, even more complex problems can occur.
Here is what can happen:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Runny stool or diarrhea. Rabbits have to eat a lot of dietary fiber to have a healthy stool. That’s why they eat so much hay and pellets (high in fiber content). Too much cucumber can introduce too much water in the rabbit’s gastrointestinal system. This can lead to diarrhea.</li>
<li>Loss of weight. Compared to other vegetables, fruit, and hay, cucumbers are a low-calorie food. If the bunny’s stomach is full of cucumber slices, they can’t eat other foods. In time, this can lead to unhealthy weight loss.</li>
<li>Lack of nutrition. Because cucumbers don’t have high nutritional value, a bunny on a cucumber-heavy diet can experience nutrition deficiencies. It is important for every rabbit to enjoy a diverse diet. That’s the only way it gets all the macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs for a healthy life.</li>
</ul>
Again, it’s important to only give small quantities of cucumbers to a bunny.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Do Rabbits Even Like Eating Cucumbers?</h2>
Oh boy, they do. Of course, there are some exceptions.
An average bunny will be very happy if you serve it a slice of cucumber. Nonetheless, some bunnies won’t even touch them. Especially kits (young bunnies) can breed a healthy resentment of cucumbers. Adult bunnies are less likely to dislike the taste of a cucumber.
There is only one sure way of knowing if your bunny likes cucumbers: Cut a slice of a freshly-picked cucumber and place it in front of a rabbit. Most rabbits will just start nibbling at it and gorge of the delicacy when they see how tasteful it is.

<li>Bunny food (veggies, pellets, hay, water).</li>
<li>Rabbit grooming.</li>
<li>An occasional visit to the vet.</li>
</ul>
If you’re adopting a bunny, it’s essential to learn a thing or two about how to take care of a bunny.
Many people do make a mistake that rabbits are easy to take care of. Something in the range of a domestic cat. That is a bit far from the truth, however. Bunnies are loving and affectionate pets but they do take a lot of daily care.
The best anybody can do before buying a pet rabbit is to know what to expect when it comes to bunny care. Preparing in advance will keep your bunny a happy bunny.
For that reason, I’ve prepared the ‘Grand Bunny Plan’. It consists of 6 essential topics that encompass everything you should know about pet rabbit care. Each topic also expands into several more detailed articles and recommendations.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Rabbit-Proof Your Home</h2>
How much damage can a small bunny even do?
It’s just a little furry fluff ball, right? Well, if you intend to raise a bunny indoors, the first step is to take care of your home is adequately protected. That will save a whole lot of trouble along the way.
Rabbit-proofing your home goes both ways:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>A bunny can chew through electrical cables and damage your home.</li>
<li>A bunny can also chew on a house plant that is poisonous to him. This is how your home can damage the rabbit.</li>
</ul>
This is why knowing how best to rabbit-proof your home is essential.
Cats get a scratcher because they like to scratch. Bunnies, quite similarly, like to chew and we have to take everything a bunny could chew into account when rabbit-proofing a room or the whole house.
Properly taking care of a bunny does include thinking about few things as far as rabbit-proofing your home goes. These include:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Electrical cables. Bunny can eat through them and get’s electrocuted. Bunnies, in general, don’t like to get electrocuted. It might even put them into cardiac arrest.</li>
<li>Plants. Bunnies and home plants don’t mix all that well. A lot of house plants are poisonous to rabbits. They can cause cramps, digestive problems, or even worse effects.</li>
<li>Valuable items (ceramics, painting, TV). Bunnies tend to hop all over the place and chew at random things. You don’t want those random things to be paintings. Obviously, a bunny can hop into a TV or a valuable ceramic item and knock it down.</li>
</ul>
All in all, it’s best to prepare your home for your bunny in order to avoid problems along the way.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Provide Indoor Housing (“Bunny House”)</h2>
Before you even get a bunny, you need to rabbit-proof your house AND prepare a house for a bunny. Obviously, bunnies need a place to stay and it’s just duty to provide the habitat a bunny will feel most comfortable in.
Full “Bunny House” plan includes:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Indoor bunny cage or hutch. This is where the bunny sleeps and feeds. A bunny should feel most secure in their indoor cage or hutch.</li>
<li>Playpen. It’s the “yard” of the bunny house. It extends the area where bunny can be playful and hop a lot. Plan pens are optional but most bunny overs will tell you that keeping a bunny in the playpen means less housekeeping for them.</li>
<li>Litter box. For No. 1 and No. 2, obviously. One part of how to take care of a rabbit is to litter train them. It’s actually surprisingly easy (more on that later on).</li>
</ol>
First thing to decide is this:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Will bunny have the freedom to move to every part of your home?</li>
<li>Will you confine bunny to a select room or a number of rooms?</li>
</ul>
Most bunny owners usually have a designated room for a bunny. In most cases, this is the living room where you can also spend some quality human-bunny time. It’s nice to also add access to your bedroom. There is nothing quite so wholesome as your bunny waking you up.
Regardless of how many rooms a bunny has access to, however, every bunny needs it’s own dedicated area. Yes, a bunny can jump in your bed or on your couch, but even a bunny has to have it’s own special place in your home.
That special place is an indoor rabbit hutch or rabbit cage. “What should I get for an indoor bunny, a hutch or a cage?” is one of the most common questions future pet rabbit owners have. It’s very on-point. Here’s why:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Hutch or cage will effectively become a part of your home. You will see it every day and it makes it should look nice to you.</li>
<li>It’s essentially the ‘bunny’s house’. Bunny has to find it as functional as possible and be comfortable sleeping, feeding, even defecating in it.</li>
<li>Hutch or cage is, in most cases, the biggest one-time expenditure when you start to taking care of a bunny. Bunny habitat is one thing you don’t want to make the wrong choice on.</li>
</ul>
Here is a general rule:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Rabbit cage is best for indoor bunnies. Especially if you have only one bunny, you don’t really need a hutch.</li>
<li>Rabbit hutch can be used for outdoor rabbits and several indoor rabbits. If you want to have 3 or more rabbits inside your home, a hutch might be a better choice than a rabbit cage.</li>
</ul>
Taking care of a rabbit includes choosing the right home for them. Picking the right cage or hutch depends on rabbit breed, number of rabbits, needs of your bunny, and so on. Also, don’t forget about a playpen and litter box.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Bunnies Have To Eat (And They Can Be Picky Eaters)</h2>
Daily taking care of rabbits includes feeding them and feeding them well. All bunnies are herbivores. Basically, that means they are vegetarians and will never eat something that includes meat.
What do bunnies eat? Well, a food pyramid of an indoor bunny consists of 4 vital ingredients:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Vegetables (and sometimes fruits). Every adult bunny should get more than 70% of the nutrients from fresh veggies. A rule of them is that a 2-pound adult rabbit should eat about 1 packed cup of fresh vegetables like spinach, carrots, kale, and so on.</li>
<li>Pellets. There are several different varieties, rabbits pellets made out of grass hay are usually the best and have the highest fiber content.</li>
<li>Fresh hay. Vital for a healthy gastrointestinal system. Hay that is fresh will include a lot of fibers. For young rabbits (7 months or less) use mainly alfalfa hay. After that, you can diversify your choice of fresh hay.</li>
<li>Clean water. Give bunnies plenty of water and make sure you change the water every day. Bunnies might not (and should not) drink stale water.</li>
</ol>
One thing to remember is that bunnies usually don’t eat that much during the day. The part of the day that most bunnies like to feed are:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Early in the morning. You might give them fresh veggies, pellets, and hay before going to work.</li>
<li>Before nightfall. Sunset-time is usually the time bunnies get hungry. This is the best part of the day for you or the kids to feed them fresh vegetables.</li>
</ol>
If anybody asks, the rabbit feeding habits in the morning and before nightfall has a scientific name. We say that rabbits are crepuscular.
Special care must be taken if you adopt a baby bunny (a kit). For the first 2-3 months, a baby rabbit only food is mother’s milk. After that, you can start to introduce a small amount of fresh hay and pellets. After 3-4 months, you can also start with very small amounts of fresh veggies.
As a general rule, a bunny should always have fresh hay and fresh water. You should feed it twice a day, in the morning and before nightfall.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Bunny Grooming (Beautiful Bunny Is A Healthy Bunny)</h2>
Bunnies are very self-aware. If you put a bunny in front of a mirror, some bunnies might even recognize themselves. They will definitely recognize other rabbits in the pack from a reflection in the mirror.
However, unlike cats who can lick themselves everywhere, bunnies can’t clean themselves quite so elegantly. They just don’t have the anatomy to allow them to comb their hair. And here is where we as bunny owners come in as far as rabbit grooming is concerned.
There are several aspects when it comes to bunny grooming. Brushing hair might be the most important part if you own a Lionhead or English Angora (the fluffiest bunny breed on the planet). Rabbit grooming tasks include:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Brushing hair. Obviously, we need to help a bunny to be beautiful. Removing excess hair will also make digestive hairball (that can lead to stomach blockage) less likely to occur. We need to especially take care of brushing during the shedding season (bunnies shed, on average, 4 times a year).</li>
<li>Cleaning the ears. A simple cotton swab will suffice for this job. Do be careful, however. Bunnies can make sudden moves – hold your bunny’s head still will cleaning their ears.</li>
<li>Cleaning the anal glands. The same goes for anal glands. In time, you can see a brown smelly fluid concentrated there. Use a cotton swab to carefully remove it. Tip: Dip cotton swab in warm water, the fluid will be cleaned away easier.</li>
<li>Bunny bathing. As far as bathing is concerned, bunnies are more like cats than dogs. In essence, they don’t like bathing all that much. Rabbits don’t handle high or low temperatures well. Make sure for the water and a blow drier to be warm; never overheat your bunny.</li>
<li>Clipping the nails. Rabbit’s nails are red (vascular part) and white (the part that needs to be clipped away). Be absolutely sure to ONLY clip away the white part. The red part is not to be clipped away; this will cause bleeding. You can use dog or cat clippers (it’s hard to find one specially designed for bunny nails).</li>
<li>Keeping the teeth healthy. Just monitor them; rabbit teeth never stop growing and there is a danger that they become too big. Chewing toys will help prevent extreme growth. However, if that helps, take your bunny to a veterinarian; they can clip away the teeth (sounds scary but it’s a standard veterinarian procedure).</li>
</ol>
Grooming tasks are essential for bunny’s good health. They also present some nice moments where you can take care of your bunny. I’ve always find brushing bunny’s hair a very calming moment for myself.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5. You Have To Litter Train Your Bunny</h2>
One part of taking care of your bunny is litter training it. Don’t be worried, however. Litter training a bunny is suprisingly easy.
Obviously, bunnies do have to urine and excrete feces somewhere. You will do well to clean the feces after a bunny every day to get rid of the smell. Rabbit urine can have a strong and piercing smell.
There are two approached of how to train litter train a bunny:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Older rabbits already have their own litter area. Just put a litter box where your bunny ordinarily urinates and defecates. Place the bunny there several times; it needs to get comfortable before doing the deed. This is the easy way.</li>
<li>Younger rabbits can have several ‘random’ litter area. You have to designate a specific litter area (with a litter box) for them. Usually, the corners are best. Pick a corner, place a litter box there, and put a bunny in there several times. If you catch a young bunny urinating or defecating, just hold it up and place it down in the litter box. After some time, the bunny will start connecting the litter box with urination and defecation and will just go do the deed there. That’s how you know you’ve successfully litter trained your bunny.</li>
</ol>
Corners are the best place to install the litter box. Bunnies are always trying to protect themselves from predators, especially when they are in an uncomfortable position such as urinating. A corner covers their back sufficiently. In turn, they feel more comfortable and secure and can urinate and defecate in peace.
Here are some general rules about picking a litter box:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Bigger is better. Bunnies prefer to have a wider litter box. Of course, you have to compromise between the size of the litter box and how much space you intended to give away to your bunny.</li>
<li>Make sure you buy ‘bunny safe litter‘. Bunnies will nib the plastic litter boxes and that might not end well. Organic litter boxes from natural materials are better.</li>
<li>Avoid clay litters. Especially if your bunny likes to dig, the dust from a clay litter could be too much for the bunny’s little lungs to handle.</li>
<li>You can cover the floor with newspaper. That’s what most of the bunny owners do and it’s completely fine. A newspaper absorbs urine well and you can change it quickly.</li>
</ol>
When cleaning a rabbit litter box, it’s important to be mindful of using household cleaning products. The chemicals in these products might be harmful to rabbits. There are several dedicated cleaning products for removing stains and odors that are harmless to bunnies.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6. Find A Veterinarian (Before You Actually Need Him Or Her)</h2>
There are 100s of known diseases your bunny can come down with. Hoping your bunny will stay healthy is a good thing, being prepared in the case that something happens is better.
One of the most common mistakes future rabbit owners make is not finding a veterinarian prior to adopting a bunny. The important thing is to be ready when your bunny starts showing symptoms of a disease.
Now, when rabbit owners start to see something is wrong with a bunny, we usually respond in two ways:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>‘Google’ symptoms. Trying to find out to help ourselves.</li>
<li>Drive a bunny to a veterinarian.</li>
</ol>
Both are correct responses in a certain way. Google won’t solve all problems and not every bunny problem is serious enough to merit a visit to a veterinarian.
Checking out symptoms on the internet is useful (in a limited way). You can try to figure out if a vet is needed.
In essence, every rabbit owner has three duties when it comes to bunny health:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Take care of the bunny’s health. That includes healthy food, regular grooming, clean water, and so on.</li>
<li>Learn how to observe your bunny. This is your most important job. You have to know how a bunny behaves. If you notice a change in behavior that might be symptomatic of a disease, you know you have to take your bunny to a vet.</li>
<li>Get a vet. A veterinarian is a professional when it comes to rabbit health. You need to find it prior to adopting a bunny in order to avoid a whole lot of problems down the road.</li>
</ol>
A piece of really bad advice is to take care of the bunny’s health problems on your own. The health issues of rabbits can be quite complex. Most of us are not trained to spot, diagnose, and treat health issues a bunny might have. Veterinarians, on the contrary, do this for a living. Trust in them.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Make Your Bunny Happy And You Will Be Happy As Well (I’ll Guarantee It)</h2>
For every bunny owner, there is nothing more beautiful than a bunny carelessly hopping around your home. It can be a profound and calming experience.
Nonetheless, keeping bunny happy, healthy, and well feed is your responsibility. The task is not an easy one at all. However, it’s one well worth doing to make bunnies happy.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Indoor Bunny Breeds</h2>
We narrowed your choices down to 16 breeds. These bunny breeds are especially perfect as pets due to their friendly personality.
For indoor pets, the small rabbit breeds are the best (especially if you’re buying your first bunny). Of course, if you think you can handle the big English Lop or even the Flemish Giant, you can go right ahead as well.
We’ll start with the smallest ones, transition to the a bit bigger ones, and finish the list with the biggest rabbit breeds you can keep at home as a pet (newsflash, it’s the Flemish Giant).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Netherland Dwarf (Smallest Breed, Very Energetic)</h3>
There are small rabbits, smaller ones and then there is the Netherland Dwarf. This tinny bunny is the smallest rabbit breed in the world. They are originally from the Netherlands and they are very small; hence the breed name ‘Netherland Dwarf’.
Even when fully grown, they weigh up from 1.1 lb up to 2.5 lb. Despite being so small, they have tons of energy. You’ll find these small fluffy beast whizzing around your home with lightning speed.

We do tend to think that small rabbits are cute and calm. Well, the Netherland Dwarf sure is cute, but it’s not calm at all. This rabbit breed needs a lot of attention, playtime and can be very intensive for the petite size.
No one is really raising Netherland Dwarfs for meat. They are almost exclusively raised as indoor pets. Nonetheless, if you have small children, here’s a fair warning: Children don’t know how to handle bunnies with a soft touch and Netherland Dwarfs are known to nip if you don’t know how to handle them properly.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Dwarf Hotot (Blackish Eye Circles And White Fur)</h3>
Dwaft Hotot is another dwarf-sized rabbit breed that can weight from 2 to 3 pounds when fully grown.
Originally, Dwarf Hotot originates from France. Baroness Bernard is said to develop the species in te beginning of 20th Century by selectively breeding bigger Blanc De Hotot species of rabbits.
The clean giveaway of a Dwarf Hotot species are the so-called ‘eyes of fancy’. Essentially, they have a blackish circle around their eyes. Their fur is short and most commonly white:

The distinct contrast between the blackish circles around the eyes and the white fur makes them instantly recognizable by bunny enthusiasts.
What is more, they tend to not be as energetic as Netherland Dwarfs, which makes them even a better small rabbit breed for indoors. Dwarf Hotot is especially perfect for small-size apartments because it doesn’t need that much space and it is petite to start with.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Lionhead (Most Popular Breed For Pets)</h3>
Lionhead is probably to most popular small bunny breed. You can instantly recognize them; they look like lions!
Fully grown they can weight from 3 to 3.7 lb and are particularly friendly and cute. Obviously, they have longer fur around the head. We do need to know a thing or two about grooming that 3 inches fur. It can get intangled if you don’t brush it regularly.

These little furry bunnies were developed in England. However, they are originally from Belgium. Apparently, they wanted to cross-breed Netherland Dwarf with small Swiss Fox species. The result is a really small bunny breed that has longer fur than other ‘dwarf’ breeds.
They can be white, brown, or even black. With so many options, people do find it difficult to decide for that special Lionhead they want. I mean, they know they want a Lionhead, but there are so many cute ones you can find in stores.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">4. Mini Rex (Small Rabbit From Texas)</h3>
Everything is bigger in Texas, right? Well, not necessarily. Mini Rex is the smallest American rabbit breed and it originates from Texas.
It can grow from 3 lb to 4.5 lb. However, you will rarely find a 5+ pound Mini Rex. In short, they are small and also very narrow.
In fact, you can recognize them by looking at how narrow their shoulders are. On top of that (literally), they have upright ears and a plush coat.
As all Texans, the Mini Rex bunnies are well-known for their friendly personality. This makes them an ideal indoor rabbit breed because you don’t have to be that careful with rabbit-proofing everything. They tend not to nip or dig as much as other rabbit breeds.

You will find that they can have a fur of pretty much any color. The fur itself feels like velvet to the touch, it’s quite amazing.
If you ever get a chance to see a Mini Rex in person, try touching their fur. It will melt your heat.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Holland Lop (Big Lazy Ears; 6 Fur Color Types)</h3>
Lop breeds, in general, are named so because of the loppy ears. Holland Lop, for example, has big loppy ears that fall almost to the ground. We find that very cute and, as only appropriate, the Holland Lop is a favorite bunny breed for many rabbit owners.
Holland Lop is a small breed from Netherlands. They can grow up to 4 pounds in total. The species was developed by a Dutch breeder Adrian de Cock. Namely, Holland Lop is a result of breeding big 15 pound French Lops with the smallest 2.5 Netherland Dwarfs.

There are 6 prominent color variations of Holland Lops. It all depends on what is the primary fur color:

Obviously, long furry bunnies can make a pleasant pet as well. They can weight up to 4 pounds. They are rather playful and enjoy the interaction with their owners.

Because of the long fur, American Fuzzy Lops need daily grooming. They are a calm rabbit breed but high maintenance one. Straightening all the fur out is a pleasant but also a necessary task.
American Fuzzy Lops are very social; they like to hang around people as well as around other rabbits. They really love rabbit toys such as various balls or cones.
This is a breed that needs a lot of attention. If you want a special bunny to fill up your day, the American Fuzzy Lop breed is a very good choice.

Dutch was once the most popular pet rabbit breed. This type of rabbit has a long and rich history. However, when the smaller ‘dwarf’ breeds such as Lionhead and Mini Rex came along, the Dutch’s popularity slowly started to wane.
Dutch is also known under other names such as ‘Hollander’ and ‘Brabander’. This breed of rabbits can reach a weight of 5 pounds or even a bit more.
They certainly are one of the most distinguishable rabbit breeds. Most of the people who know a thing or two about rabbits will immediately notice the characteristic black/white pattern Dutch bunnies are known for. Here’s how it looks:

Families will small kids can have doubts about adopting a pet rabbit. An especially good quality of Dutch bunnies is that they react surprisingly well to playful interaction with children.
Dutch with it’s predictable nature and short hair is a very low maintanance breed. For that reason it is most appropriate for families who are adopting their first bunny. Dutch makes taking care for a bunny easy.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">9. Mini Lop (Very Playful)</h3>
Mini Lop was first identified in East Germany in 1972. Essentially, it is a result of German Big Lop and Chinchilla breeding. The resulting breed – Mini Lop – can reach a maximum weight of about 8 pounds.
Mini Lops have a small body compared to their big and meaty ears. Their personality is very friendly. Mini Lop is extremely playful bunny breed that needs a lot of attention.

They are quite intelligent as well. You can train a Mini Lop to respond to a clicker. That makes quite a fun activity and the playful Mini Lops are happy to get the snacks when they hear a clicker.
Because this is such an active bunny breed, it is most appropriate for families who really want to play with their bunnies.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">10. Florida White (Relaxed White Breed)</h3>
If you’ve ever seen a rabbit white as snow all over, you’ve probably seen the Florida White.
The fresh white fur is immediately recognizable. Florida Whites also have pink or reddish eyes and can look a bit scary.
In fact, they were breed by ARBA Judge Orville Miliken from two albino rabbits (Dutch and Polish) and a New Zealand White which is white to begin with.
These rabbits are sadly best known as being laboratory rabbits. However, because they are so calm and relaxed, they make for an excellent domestic breed. They don’t whizz around, aren’t too playful and don’t need as much attention as American Fuzzy Lops, for example.

Florida Whites can weigh up to 6 pounds. They have a particularly round body.
This breed tends to be relatively healthier than many others. Florida White rabbits have a lifespan of more than 5 years.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">11. Himalayan (Calmest “Zen” Rabbit Breed)</h3>
Himalayan is one of the oldest rabbit breeds. In fact, it’s so old that we don’t actually know precisely where it came from. Some specialist say it came from Himalayas, others think it came from the Far East, but no one is 100% sure.
Himalayan is a the only cylindric-shaped rabbit species. In short, it’s very long. The body can be up to 4 times as long as the body. A descendend from Himalayan breed is Californian which is a very well-known meat breed.
One distinctive feature of Himalayan is just how very calm it is; very “zen”. They are very easy to raise and to take care of because they are pretty much the calmest bunny breed in the world.

Honestly, Himalayan is a very good choice for a first time bunny owner. Being calm and low maintanance, it will be a pleasure to adjust your life to include a gentle and docile bunny.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">12. English Angora (The Fluffiest Bunny Breed)</h3>
Holding an English Angora bunny in your hands is like holding a cloud. This breed was specially raised with ‘fluffiness’ in mind. It’s quite funny how furry this breed is. English Angora’s bunnies have fur over their eyes, ears, it goes in their mouth, and they don’t even care.
English Angora can weigh up to 7.7 pounds (fur can weight 2 pounds of even more). Of course, every rabbit breed with long fur will need daily grooming regimen. English Angora rabbit won’t mind getting a comb in the morning as well as in the evening:

If you’re not sure you’re looking at English or French Angora (similar species), you can just check if the fluff is covering their eyes. English Angora is pretty much the only rabbit breed with fur so long that it covers their eyes.
Adopting English Angora is usually recommended for people who have some experience grooming rabbits. As we all know, grooming bunnies takes a bit of time. On top of that, taking care of shredding English Angora does take extra patience and love.ž
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">13. Harlequin (Colorful “Two Face” Breed)</h3>
Harlequin breed has a characterictic ‘crazy’ color patterns. First of all, they half of their face can be completely different than the other half. It can even have a black ear and an orange one, it’s quite amazing.
The rest of the body is also exquisitly colored. You’ll find patterns and chaos as far as color is concerned. For example, the somewhat ‘crazy’ character Margot Robbie plays in called ‘Harlequin’ because of the colorful fur Harlequin breed of rabbits have.

The primary color of every Harlequin is orange. The supplemental colors that can be literally anywhere can be:

Harlequin can grow quite big. They can weight anywhere from 6.5 lb to 8 lb. They are both playful and intelligent. As such, the Harlequins do make good pets.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">14. English Lop (First Develop Lop Breed With Extremely Long Ears)</h3>
English Lop is the first Lop breed. It is a result of selective breeding that happened in 19th Century England. Because it was meant to be breed for meat, the English Lop is quite a chonker. It can easily weigh more than 10 pounds.
Nonetheless, the extremely long ear have made it one of the favorite indoor rabbit breeds. The reason is simple: those long floppy ears look cute and we all love cute bunnies. It does need a bit more space than other smaller rabbits. You can’t move these ears around in a small tight space:

In fact, the ears are so long that English Lop has to literally drag them around on the floor. Fortunately, that slows it down a bit. If you don’t like quick jumping bunnies that hop around a lot, you’ll love the English Lop. This is a calm creature that response well to warm affection.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">15. English Spot (Need At Least 1h Of Running Per Day)</h3>
English Spot can weigh from 5 to 8 pounds. It has distinctive black spots on white fur (hence the name ‘Spot’). These spots can be found literally anywhere:

<li>Around eyes.</li>
<li>On the cheeks.</li>
<li>On the upper head.</li>
<li>A chain of spots along the body.</li>

Englsih Spots are quite a handfull as far as maintance is needed. They will need at least 1h of running time every day; literal running around the house. The worst part is that this rabbit breed is most active early in the morning and at night. During the day, however, they can be lazy and sleep all day.

Because they are so active during the night time, they are not ideal as indoor bunnies. Nonetheless, the spots make them so cute that many people decide to adopt an English Spot regardless of the nightly inconveniences.
They also eat a lot. Of course, they burn a lot of calories during that hour or two of night activities, and their feeding style has to support that energy output. Timothy hays, for example, are perfect feed for English Spot breed because it can sufficiently regenerate their energy levels.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">16. Flemish Giant (A 25 Pound “Gentle Giant”)</h3>
You know those giant rabbits you’ve seen online? Those are the Flemish Giants. A rabbit of the Flemish Giant species can quickly grow more than 10 pounds in weigh, some of them even reach 25 pounds. In short, they are huge.
Obviously, they were first selectively breed for meat and fur. Nonetheless, Flemish Giants are extremely docile and patients giant rabbits. This is why people love to keep them as pets. They are pretty much the biggest good natured and docile pet you can have.
It’s just facinating looking at how they hop around. Imagine a 25 lb Flemish Giant jumping up and down, it’s quite an amazing sight:

It’s quite easy to love these big rabbits. What is a big advantage is that Flemish Giant is very gentle with other pets like dogs and pets as well.
Smaller rabbit breeds can be bullied a bit by dogs and cats. Because the Flemish Giant is so big, dogs and cats prefer to leave it alone and this gentle giant doesn’t attack small kittens, for example.
Despite being so big, it is most appropriate for first time adopters. It has short fur (that means low maintanance), is gentle and very affectionate. Of course, Flemish Giant like to eat a lot. Feeding it hay can be the best party trick you have up your sleeve.

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Furr. This includes brushing, especially is the shedding season.</li>
<li>Ears.</li>
<li>Check their teeth.</li>
<li>Nails.</li>
</ol>
Let’s start with the most important part of bunny grooming – taking care of their furr.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1. Fur: Shedding Seasons And How To Brush Bunny Fur</h2>
If you observe the bunny’s fur throughout the year, you will notice periods of time when the fur will just be all over the place.
Rabbits have regular shedding season. Every 3 months or so, the bunny’s body will shed a part of the existing fur to be replaced by a new fur. A general rule of bunny shedding seasons is that after a heavy shedding season you will see a light shedding season and visa versa.
Why does shedding even matter, you may ask. You can help brush the fur away with a comb and collect the fur that started to accumulate in your apartment, right?
Well, knowing how often and how much bunnies shed is important to know because it falls on us to take care of the brushing part. We need to brush a bunny every day in the evening during shedding season in order to avoid hairballs.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Avoiding Development Of Hairballs</h3>
The development of hairballs in bunny’s stomach is one of the most common side effects of bad bunny grooming.
Bunnies will readily lick their fur during the shedding season. If we don’t remove the excess fur routinely, hairballs can develop in bunny’s stomach. Unlike cats, who can cough the hairball back up, bunnies essentially have no way to get a hair ball out of their stomach.
That’s why we have to groom bunnies with a comb so regularly. The only good way to prevent gastrointestinal stasis resulting from a hairball development is to do everything we can to prevent the hairball to develop in the first place.
Routinely combing a bunny during the shedding season (especially the heavy season) is of paramount importance.
The shedding season can take anywhere from a day to up to two weeks. We should brush the old fur away at least two times per day – in the morning and in the evening. For additional safety, brushing several times a day does help but we often don’t have that much time during the day to do it frequently enough.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">How To Brush A Bunny?</h3>
First-time bunny owners may be alarmed when a bunny might be shedding their fur by the handful. That’s not all that unusual during heavy shedding. English Angora, for example, the world’s <a href="https://cinewap.info/best-bunny-breeds/">fluffiest bunny breed</a> is infamous for its heavy shedding.

Brushing a bunny serves two purposes:
<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Removing excess fur (especially important during shedding).</li>
<li>Preventing the formation of fur mats.</li>
</ol>
In any case, mats of fur might occur even if you brush your bunny several times a day. These mats are usually soft and can be pulled apart using just your fingers.
Do not use scissors to cut a mat away. Putting scissors near a bunny is something only experience bunny handlers should do. The chances of bunny making a sudden movement and piercing its skin on the scissors is just not worth it; especially, if you can use your finger to clear the fur mat.
Some bunny owners may be concerned when they find a bald spot on their bunny’s fur. The bald spot is nothing to get worried about. Bunnies can shed their fur quicker in some places than others. The fur will grow back again quickly enough.
When picking a brush, you should choose the soft-tipped one. Pretty much every small pet brush should do; the only thing you should care about is not to hurt the bunny’s skin. In this regard, brushes with soft tips are the safest to use.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Do You Have To Bath A Bunny?</h3>
No. Bunnies are similar to cats; they tend to clean themselves by licking their fur. However, there are times that a bunny can be very dirty. In such cases, it can make sense to bath a bunny.
Cases when a bunny should be bathed include:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>When they have a ‘poopy butt’. Bunnies are not as agile as cats and they can’t clean their behinds.</li>
<li>When they make a mess with their stool. Especially when bunnies have a runny stool, they can lie in it and are very dirty.</li>
<li>If they spill milk, coffee or some other things on themselves.</li>

Bunnies don’t really like bathing and we need to be careful about the water temperature. We need to gently hold them and wash them with mildly warm water.
They don’t react well to extreme temperatures. That’s why using mildly warm water makes sense. After the bath, don’t use a blower fan to dry them. Blow drying a bunny might cause the body temperature of a bunny to fall too quickly and bunny might go into a shock.
Mild water and using a towel to dry it off two general rules when bathing a bunny.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Ears: How To Clean Bunny Ears</h2>
Bunnies have an extraordinarily large ears. If we don’t clean them often and properly, they can be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.
The primary concern when cleaning bunny ears is a rabbit ear butter. Excess fur, hay, and even poop can be found in unclean ears.

When cleaning those big ears we have to be careful about two things:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Not damaging a bunny’s eardrum. Bunnies can move swiftly, especially if we mess around their ears. We need to be careful not to puncture their eardrums.</li>
<li>Not using harmful chemicals to clean the ear butter.</li>
</ul>
The best way to clean a bunny’s ears is with a cotton swab. The trick is to dip a swab in warm water. Usually, you have to use 10 or more swabs for one ear in order to clean it properly.
Just be careful to keep a rabbit calm. With their sudden movements, they can pierce themselves on the cotton swab we’re using.
Bunny’s ears should be cleaned two times per month, depending on the filth that gathers there.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Teeth: Check Them Regularly, And Cut Them If Overgrown</h2>
In nature, rabbit teeth never stop growing. Because the lifespan of wild rabbits is about one or two years, that’s not a problem.
An average <a href="https://dailybunny.com/how-long-do-bunnies-live/">lifespan of a household bunny can be up to 12 years</a>. In this time, bunny teeth can grow to big for their mouths. That’s why we need to monitor the length of bunny’s teeth. If they are too long, we have to clip them.
Many first-time pet owners shudder at a though of clipping bunny teeth. That’s completely understandable. Contrary to common belief, it’s not all that hard to clip away bunny teeth.
If you don’t feel confident doing it, you can take a bunny to a vet. Shortening bunny teeth is a routine task for them and they can give you pointers on how to do it.
The best trick of how to clip away overgrown bunny teeth is to use pet nail clippers. Any nail clippers should do but the small pet ones, meant primary for cats and small dogs, will be best. Never clip more than 1/4 of the length of a bunny tooth and be gentle with the bunny when you do it.
If, however, bunnies have a serious problem with overgrown teeth, you can use a rotary tool. This is a tool that veterinarians usually use. The whole procedure can involve sedating a rabbit. If you haven’t used a rotary tool before, it’s best to leave it to a veterinarian to shorten the bunny’s teeth.
The best things you can do to avoid teeth to overgrow are:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Supply a bunny with chewing toys. Chewing blocks of wood, for example, can limit the growth of bunny teeth.</li>
<li>Feed them fiber-rich food. Fiber-rich food like fresh hay has to be chewed. This, in turn, will have the same effect as chewing toys.</li>
<li>Oral exams. Try to check the length of bunny teeth every two weeks or so. Shortening shorter teeth is easier than shortening longer teeth. Clip them away when they aren’t terribly overgrown.</li>
</ul>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Nails: Bunny Pedicure Is A Necessity</h2>
In nature, rabbits scratch hard surfaces like rocks and wood. This wears down their toenails on front and hind legs.
House bunnies, on the other hand, have the luxury of soft surfaces we provide them. Due to lack of that natural scratching, if falls on us as bunny owners to shorten bunny’s fails.
You don’t have to do it too often. Once or two every 2 months is recommended.
We have to be careful about how to trim bunny’s nails. If you look at a nail on the bunny’s front legs, you can see that part closer to the body is red, and the part that is facing outwards is white.
It is imperative that we only cut the white part of the nail. There are numerous veins under the red part of the nail; that’s why it’s colored red. Even a slight cut in that area will lead to both bleeding and significant discomfort for your bunny.
We can use any kind of clippers that are appropriate for small pets like cats or dogs.
Here is a quick summary about cutting bunny’s nails:

<li>Cut only the white part of the nail. Never the red vascular part.</li>
<li>Use sharp clippers appropriate for small pets.</li>
<li>Cut nails once or twice per 2 months.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Always Make A Bunny Comfortable</h2>
The general rule when grooming a bunny is to create a safe and comfortable environment. We have to take care of the bunny’s needs as far as fur, ears, teeth, and nail trimming is concerned.
In many cases, bunnies like fur combings but will bulge at nail trimming or bathing. No matter the situation, however, it is always advisable to groom them as calmly as possible.
Properly performing all grooming activities will not only make our bunny beautiful; it can also positively affect their health and well-being.
