  381. <p>Trinity Classical Academy alumnus Lucas Spring has always been passionate about the game of basketball. The guard became the program’s all-time leading scorer last season and led the Knights to the playoffs in all four of his varsity years. </p>
  382. <p>Since graduating, Spring has taken on new challenges off the court to say the least.  </p>
  383. <p>This past summer, the 2024 grad opted into a field operation to Kenya with local nonprofit organization L Squared. The mission was to provide literal tons of food, water points and food sustainability to the impoverished citizens of Maasai Mara. </p>
  384. <p>Spring knew soccer was the most popular sport for the Maasai but first got the idea to build a basketball court from his father.  </p>
  385. <p>“A lot of them play soccer over there. That’s the main sport,” Spring said. “There were a lot of girls that were really excited about basketball, and they had been playing on a dirt field, it was really nothing. There were cows sitting in the middle of their basketball court, no cement or anything. They were like, ‘Can you please help us? We want to play basketball.’” </p>
  386. <p>The former Knight wasn’t sure if they’d be able to build the court while he was there. The funds weren’t building up as quickly as he’d hoped but eventually Spring and L Squared had the green light and the resources to build the basketball court. </p>
  387. <p>Spring did more than just help raise funds for the court, as he helped lay the pavement, clear the area and set up the hoops. While the court could appear to serve as just a recreational sport for the local Maasai children, Spring knows it’s so much more. </p>

  391. <p>“I think it will have a huge impact, because in Kenya, they’re all very, very dedicated to their studies,” Spring said. “It’s not so much about sports over there. The girls enjoy school,  but everybody needs something outside of that. I think it’ll devote a lot of girls to sports in general, just with that opportunity, because a lot of the time, the reason that they’re not in sports is because there’s just nowhere for them to play, nowhere for them to do anything.”  </p>
  392. <p>Spring had to be ready for anything from carjackings to co-existing with safari wildlife, and went through special training under L Squared CEO David Stratton before heading to Kenya. Stratton leads two to three trips to Kenya each year, where his group brings tons of food, builds kitchens, and aims to cultivate lands, fencing off and planting in areas to provide self-sustaining feeding programs. </p>
  393. <p>“We dropped off a ton and a half of food,” Stratton said. “We went to communities, remote villages and places in Africa where people are currently at risk of starvation, being trafficked, and having many different challenges related to food insecurity.” </p>
  394. <p>While providing food and sustainability always remains the focus, Stratton kept Spring focused on playing sports with and empowering the local children. </p>
  395. <p>“We played a lot of sports with the kids,” Stratton said. “I had Lucas particularly focused on playing sports and focusing on empowering the students through sports. We’re experimenting with some new curriculum right now that builds leaders through sports and Lucas was one of the pioneers in that project.” </p>
  396. <p>Stratton typically leads the field operations with his wife and family. The CEO opted to bring volunteers on this trip and his churchmate Spring was the first official sign-up. </p>
  397. <p>It was a whole new world for Spring, as expected, and he took in all the different factors of another culture. </p>
  398. <p>“Any time you go out of the country, you get a different perspective, but over there it’s so different,” Spring said. “The people are very nice. It’s really community-based. You sit down and talk to people a lot more than you do here. Here people just walk by each other, don’t say anything, but over there you’re kind of communicating with everybody. You’re just in the middle of the safari land with all these different wild animals running around. There’s people living in extreme poverty, which is like they’re living on and working for less than $5 a day while we’re making $20 an hour over here. So it was very eye-opening.” </p>
  399. <p>Spring wanted to work in the field operation for the greater good, and in process observed that, in L Squared, Stratton not only raises funds, but also goes on the trip and leads the mission with his own two hands.  </p>

  401. <p>“A lot of this stuff is extremely expensive. This small organization with the amount of funds that they have, they’re doing a ton of work,” Spring said “A lot of that’s because it’s like hands-on, like they’re going over there, doing it themselves.” </p>
  402. <p>Stratton founded L Squared over 10 years ago with a dream of “providing a lasting and positive impact for those who need it the most,” as the nonprofit’s mission statement reads. </p>
  403. <p>“The need is so big now, the impact is lasting,” Stratton said. “One of the things that we did was we built this water point. Now we’re solving the problem for that community. There’s only so many water points and so many kitchens that this community needs, and then we can move on to the next one. That’s the goal: to empower and get a community on its pathway to thriving, and then move to the next one.” </p>
  404. <p>Since founding the nonprofit organization, he has found ways to minimize the spending in all aspects of the field operation and feels every penny makes an impact on each trip. </p>
  405. <p>“We should be spending four to 10 times more than what we do to accomplish what we accomplish,” Stratton said. “We can do wells and water projects for a 10th of what it normally costs an organization because I negotiate every part of the transaction, because we hire laborers directly, because we do everything ourselves, and that’s how we’ve been able to have an impact with growing funds.” </p>

  409. <p>Sports are one of the many additions L Squared has added to its charitable operation. The organization also provides menstrual products to the impoverished young Maasai women. Stratton said the local female students are too poor to purchase their own and will miss school days without them. On top of missing out on education, Stratton said the women are at risk of sexual abuse should they be out of school and unsupervised. </p>
  410. <p>“What we do with these pads is we give them to these girls, empower them to stay in school, whether it be monitored or not, they have supervision, and eyes are on them, keeping them away from bad actors,” Stratton said. </p>
  411. <p>L Squared accepts donations on its website, <a href="https://www.l2squared.org/donate" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">www.l2squared.org/donate</a>. Any money given goes directly to the next field operation and in turn helps feed the impoverished people of Maasai Mara. </p>
  412. <p>“All the funds go to our operations and our projects that are currently in Kenya,” Stratton said. “We have several projects on the board that we’re looking to fund. We do everything ourselves directly so I don’t have a third party, we source all the materials in the ground, and we do the work ourselves. So I would say, we’re very competitive cost-wise. The cost that it takes us to do things, and I negotiate everything down to like, a few pennies.” </p>
  413. <p>Spring returned from the field operation in August and didn’t get to see the basketball court completed. Stratton is hoping his young volunteer can find some time in the next year or so to return to Kenya and see the court. </p>
  414. <p>“Lucas is a team player,” Stratton said. “When you go into a situation like this, you need a team and people who are team players. There were many moments where we were in situations with challenges; Africa is a very dangerous place. But Lucas was the solution and kept the team tight. I love talking about Lucas, because it goes right back to the team. When you have a team player, and you’re in a unit, you’re impenetrable.” </p>
  415. <p>Spring will now enter the next stage of his life: college. One of Trinity’s brightest is headed to UCLA to pursue a degree in business economics. The now-Bruin is excited to return to Kenya with L Squared, with more plans for the Maasai children. </p>
  416. <p>“I definitely see myself going back,” Spring said. “It’s inspired me to want to travel more, to want to do more things like this. I see myself going back to run some training camps, maybe run a summer camp sometime when the paint’s fully finished. I’ll definitely be back again.” </p>
  417. <p>Spring remains inspired and will aim to keep on giving even more to the people he knows can never truly give back to him. However, Spring and Stratton agree, maybe that’s the best part. </p>
  418. <p>“There’s nothing more fulfilling than when you help someone that can’t do anything for you,” Stratton said. “It just changes you. It’s been the most rewarding thing of my life to help these people.” </p>

  446. <p>Head coaches and top athletes from all seven programs gathered on Saturday at Canyon High School for the Foothill League’s first ever boys’ basketball media day. </p>
  447. <p>With the season just a week away, all seven teams, including the reigning champion Saugus Centurions, felt Foothill League will be the most even it’s been in years. </p>
  448. <p>“I don’t know that there’s a better public school basketball league around,” said Golden Valley coach Chris Printz. “I’d like someone to name one if they can think of it. We know every night in this league you’ve got to bring it.” </p>
  449. <p>The season begins on Monday with Foothill League play starting on Tuesday, Dec. 3. </p>
  450. <p>With a league championship and playoff spots more wide open than ever, here are some highlights from each program’s time under the spotlight: </p>
  451. <p><strong>Saugus confident in returners’ chemistry</strong> </p>
  452. <p>The Centurions enter the season as defending Foothill League champs for the first time in 43 years. </p>
  453. <p>Saugus is gearing up for a repeat season with plenty of strong pieces in play. </p>
  454. <p>Alfredo Manzano and captains Bryce Mejia and Andrew Phan all attended media day and talked about the odds of going back-to-back. </p>
  455. <p>“I feel like our team is really well put together,” Phan said. “We have good philosophies, good values, and I think we have a great chance to repeat.” </p>
  456. <p>Defense will always be the staple for a team led by Manzano, who has consistently kept his Centurions in Division 2AA year after year. Despite the new playoff format, where the CIF places teams in divisions at the end of the regular season, the coach still sees his team landing in that same high division. </p>

  458. <p>“I don’t see why not. Our schedule’s tough this year just like every year,” Manzano said when asked if his team could still end up in 2AA. “This year they’re gonna place it a little differently. Wherever they put us, they put us. I’m not gonna fluff my schedule at all. I’ve never done that since I’ve been here. It’s play who we can play.” </p>
  459. <p>Phan and Mejia will be big parts of the Centurion backcourt, while senior Max Guardado will be a force in the paint. </p>
  460. <p>Saugus is typically senior-heavy but will feature several juniors and even some sophomores this year. For Manzano, it’s “go if you can go.” </p>
  461. <p>The Centurions will be solid all-around with sharpshooters and interior threats on top of their smothering defense.  </p>
  462. <p>All three Centurion representatives acknowledged there will be no easy nights in the Foothill League but with a solid returning class in place, Saugus feels confident in a repeat. </p>
  463. <p>“The core of our team has stayed the same,” Mejia said. “If we can all just put it together and stay committed, we can go back-to-back.” </p>
  464. <p><strong>Valencia riding high into ’24-25</strong> </p>
  465. <p>While Valencia hoops is entering the Greg Fontenette era, fans shouldn’t expect much of a change in terms of wins, talent and hard work. </p>
  466. <p>Fontenette was practically the head coach for the second half of the year last season but now takes over a program and varsity team full of promise. </p>
  467. <p>“You’re not really going to see much of a difference,” Fontenette said. “Coach (Bill) Bedgood, would tell you I was pretty much head coaching the team going into that second half of that season. So it’s still defense first. We like to play fast, get in transition. We’re not too much of a half-court team, but I make sure that they have the capabilities to play half-court if we are put into those positions.” </p>
  468. <p>Senior Dabe Princewell and sophomore Isaac Franklin also represented the Vikings under the lights and one big thing all three Valencia representatives agreed on was the program’s separation in years past. All three agreed the group is much more cohesive now and thus, more of a team. </p>

  470. <p>That tight-knight group will be a unique mix of 10 seniors and seven sophomores. </p>
  471. <p>For defense, Fontenette feels Princewell is one of the best on-ball defenders in the league.  </p>
  472. <p>“First of all, he volunteers for it,” Fontenette said. “I don’t even put him on (opposing top players). Our defense is gonna be fast, aggressive and all over the court.” </p>
  473. <p>To reach this goal, the new coach has increased the team’s conditioning and strength training.  </p>
  474. <p>“The conditioning and everything has increased tremendously,” Fontenette said. “The weight room has been a huge requirement going into this season. So you’re definitely going to see a lot more skilled players, a lot better-conditioned players. It’s very promising. Valencia right now just has a huge talent pool.” </p>
  475. <p><strong>West Ranch turning the page under Bartley</strong> </p>
  476. <p>The Wildcats will look a little different in the 2024-25 season after another collegiate-bound class graduated. </p>
  477. <p>Bryan Bartley has coached basketball for about 30 years and will lead the new group into the season. His background in coaching and working in basketball spans from Auburn, the Atlanta Hawks, multiple East Coast high schools and locally at Heritage Christian. </p>
  478. <p>Bartley spoke about one of the most vital factors a program must have: positive culture. </p>
  479. <p>“When you come, you have to set a culture. Culture is important and drives everything,” Bartley said. “Then after the culture, you talk about the development of our guys. They have to learn to play for something bigger than themselves. And that’s what it’s all about … We didn’t talk at all about last year, I just told them, ‘It’s gonna be different.’ The windshield is huge and the rear-view mirror is small.” </p>

  481. <p>Representing West Ranch on Saturday were Ryder Sundquist and Prince Okonkwo. </p>
  482. <p>Sundquist is a returning perimeter threat who has seen a revitalization of the program through discipline. </p>
  483. <p>“Last year we had the talent, but we lacked the discipline. That’s why we lost big games that we needed to win,” Sundquist said. “This year it’s more on discipline because we’re lacking on that talent, but we’ve all come together and played together well.” </p>
  484. <p>The West Ranch program has had its share of stars but this season Bartley believes there will be no clear one or two top scoring options. </p>
  485. <p>“I think we’re gonna score by committee this year,” Bartley said. “My whole thing is we’re gonna learn how to play the right way. We always talk about positionless basketball and playing basketball the right way. Move the ball, learn how to play together.” </p>
  486. <p>Both Wildcats felt their practices have been college-level practices, with more intensity and discipline than ever before. The high-level practices may have cost the program some players but Bartley is pleased to retain the players who are committed. </p>
  487. <p>“We lost a few kids because it was kinda tough in the beginning,” Bartley said. “A lot of kids dropped off but I love where we are because the kids who need to be here are here. They earned and deserve it.” </p>
  488. <p>The players acknowledged that most outsiders believe there will be a dramatic drop-off for the West Ranch program.   </p>
  489. <p>“Our goal is to prove people wrong this year because people thought our talent kind of dropped off, even the Damien tournament this year we’re in a lower division,” Sundquist said. “So, it’s just show that we can compete and do as well as we did last year.” </p>
  490. <p>Okonkwo, a 6-foot, 9-inch forward, will take his game outside the paint more this season and serve as a wing for the team. The forward believes his team can retake the Foothill League title.  </p>
  491. <p>“We‘re just trying to prove everyone wrong and show that we’re probably still the best team in this area,” Okonkwo said. </p>
  492. <p><strong>Canyon locked in heading into ’24-25</strong> </p>
  493. <p>Canyon returns a senior-heavy group loaded with returners. While a league title could be in the team’s grasp, coach Ali Monfared is focused on the group controlling what they can. </p>
  494. <p>“We’re really looking kind of just to build on our continuity that we ended last season with,” Monfared said. “Our main goals for this season are just to continue to focus on our controllables. We want to rebound the ball, limit our turnovers, make our free throws, and really just kind of focus on what we need to do to continue to maximize our opportunities.” </p>

  496. <p>Monfared was joined on stage by seniors Sean Hernandez, Chigozie Osuji, Solomon Sims and Eric Kubel.  </p>
  497. <p>Sims was the heart of the gritty Cowboys defense last season while Osuji led the team in steals. Hernandez was a valuable forward for the group while Canyon’s leading scorer, Kubel, also returns. </p>
  498. <p>The Cowboy offense runs through their senior star forward but don’t expect Kubel to be taking every shot. </p>
  499. <p>“Eric knows that most times in leagues, he’s gonna be face guarded and they’re gonna be all over him,” Monfared said. “I’m gonna give Eric a lot of credit. He really buys into screening. And by him screening, he gets his teammates open when they’re guarding him. It also gets him open.” </p>
  500. <p>Canyon had a successful summer and ate some humble pie in the fall after playing a relentless schedule. Monfared believes it will only progress the team and ready them for league play. </p>
  501. <p>The Cowboys have made the playoffs in three straight seasons but will aim for a longer postseason run in 2025. The team is also shooting to keep opponents under 50 points a game all season. </p>
  502. <p><strong>Golden Valley loaded with talented juniors</strong> </p>
  503. <p>Printz and the Grizzlies have a lot to be excited about: Talent, size, intellectuality and grit. </p>
  504. <p>“This is my second student stint coaching at Golden Valley, and this is probably the most talented team that we’ve had,” Printz said. “We’re still young. We still have to get over a lot of challenges, especially physicality … This is a very mature group, even though we only have three seniors and it’s a very intellectual group.” </p>
  505. <p>Printz’s biggest uncertainty with the group is where the ball will go in a must-score situation. </p>
  506. <p>“I’ve been fortunate in the last couple of years that we’ve always had a main scorer,” Printz said. “Throughout the spring, summer, fall, we really haven’t had any main scorer consistently, but we have had five guys who are average in double digits, so that’s really good. The interesting question will be, when we need that bucket, where does that bucket come from?” </p>
  507. <p>Joining Printz on stage was one of his few seniors, Kenyen Andrews, and forward/son Wyatt Printz. Andrews was a force in the paint last season but will now transition to point guard. Although he’ll typically be near the top of the key, the senior assured the media he’d still be grabbing several boards a game. </p>
  508. <p>“Absolutely, all four of my years here I’ve been one of the smallest guys but I’ve been determined to get every rebound necessary,” Andrews said. </p>
  509. <p>Wyatt is another local big who is translating to a wing. The junior can score at all three levels and feels confident in his team putting the ball in the hoop. </p>
  510. <p>“It really just means if one guy has an off night we have four others that can score the ball,” Wyatt said. “It makes us hard to beat because any one of us can beat you.” </p>
  511. <p>Golden Valley will also return Jamison Torres, Zach Christoffersen and sharpshooter Alex Villejo. </p>
  512. <p>Coach Printz knows there will be no easy nights in the Foothill League as every game is a rivalry game. The Grizzlies will aim to make their first playoff spot in three years. </p>
  513. <p><strong>Hart hoops trending back up</strong> </p>
  514. <p>Hart has multiple strong starts over the past few years that were cut short by injuries. </p>
  515. <p>The Hawks were represented by longtime head coach Tom Kelly, senior guard Ron Phillips and 7-footer Craig Irons, who all believe the team can reach its goal of 20-plus wins on the year and a postseason seed barring lighter slumps and injuries. </p>
  516. <p>“We can definitely do that this year,” Irons said. “We don’t wanna slump off midseason like we did last year. A lot of the younger guys on our team have been stepping up and been amazing players. We have every piece we really need. We have good ball handlers, good defensive players, great shooters and great inside players.” </p>
  517. <p>Phillips is one of Kelly’s most improved players whose minutes increased throughout the ’23-24 season. </p>
  518. <p>The senior will be Kelly’s offense with minor tweaks. Look for Andrew Lange, Jacob Paisano and Easton Wissmath to make impacts in the offense with numerous scoring options. </p>
  519. <p>“If we have a big kid like Craig, we’re gonna try and play inside out,” Kelly said. “We still wanna shoot the ball and we still wanna push the ball.” </p>
  520. <p>Kelly is excited for the Foothill League’s latest era as he’s seen the competition grow through multiple phases. The league looks like it’ll be a tight battle but with three new opposing head coaches, time will tell how tight games and the standings are. </p>
  521. <p>“I think what makes it fun in league this year is three new coaches, three new styles,” Kelly said. “And I’m not trying to say this in a negative way, but West Ranch is playing with local kids this year so the parity is going to be all neighborhood kids going at it head to head. That’s the fun and beauty of our league, when you have local kids going at it. These kids have known each other since elementary school, playing park and rec, travel ball, the same AAU teams. So I think the league parity is gonna be a lot more fun this year.” </p>
  522. <p><strong>Castaic new standards pave positive changes for program</strong> </p>
  523. <p>Castaic will be another program going through culture change now under first-year head coach Louis Fernando. </p>
  524. <p>Fernando has a “115 standard” where anything under 115% given is considered a failure. </p>
  525. <p>“In order to achieve what we set out to achieve, we can’t do that by coming to the gym and giving 70 or 80% of our best … Culture change is a really challenging thing and teaching basketball is super subjective. We want to bring a group together to all have that same mindset, and it’s been a challenge. I demand greatness from my players every single day and that’s something they haven’t been used to … We’re not trying to change the culture overnight, we just want to get 1% better every day.” </p>
  526. <p>Joining their coach was Alvin Clark and Tehan Silva. Both players have noticed immense changes in their individual and team play and are excited for the season ahead. </p>
  527. <p>“It’s shown in games, what coach Lou has done in practice, we can see improvement,” Clark said. “There’ll be games where we struggle but I feel we’ve come a long way and we have a good season ahead of us.” </p>
  528. <p>Off the court, Fernando has his players in study hall, staying on top of their grades and constantly reminding them their role is student before athlete. </p>
  529. <p>Castaic enters the season as a reigning CIF champion but is still looking for its first league win. With the parity of the league, the Coyotes feel good about their shot of winning a few games in Foothill while potentially returning to the postseason.  </p>

  577. <p style="text-align: left;"> Equity crowdfunding does not only help the crowd to drive and fund innovation but also helps entrepreneurs’ businesses to start and grow.  Does fintech facilitate or hinder crowdfunding?</p>
  578. <p style="text-align: left;"> In the offline world, it is hard for investors to find and invest in private companies. It takes time and resources to network into a deal and investment minimums are always very high. Fintech exists to make this process easy. With fintech, investors can find opportunities, review company’s information and engage with managing teams. Although fintech platforms allow investors to make their own decisions, they make the process more efficient.</p>

Now, you can invest into a company before it goes public and appear as if you are the clever investor who got in early. Fintech allows investors to invest early in companies that have potential to change the world.</p>
  582. <p style="text-align: left;">An example of Fintech platform that has improved equity crowdfunding is <strong>StartEngine</strong>.  The StartEngine has revolutionized the startup financing model. It helps people to invest in private firms on public platforms, thus helping entrepreneurs achieve their dreams.</p>
  583. <p style="text-align: left;"> Some Fintech firms have also come up with tools that improve equity crowdfunding. For instance, <a href="https://helpthecrowd.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">HelpTheCrow</a>d, an Amsterdam-based Crowdfunding comparison platform launched a new Equity Crowdfunding Analytics tool in April this year. The tool aims to bring transparency to equity crowdfunding market. The tool is very important to equity crowdfunding sector and is helping investors compare  investment opportunities from different countries, sectors and platforms.</p>
  584. <p style="text-align: left;"> Founded in 2015, <strong>HelpTheCrowd</strong> started collecting data in August.  With it, investors can now access some data and review top crowdfunding platforms, as well as the individual investment on those platforms.</p>

  654. <p style="text-align: left;">In 2015, AltFi and law firm Nabarro carried out a <a href="http://www.altfi.com/downloads/WhereAreTheyNow.pdf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">study</a> on 367 companies that had been funded through equity crowdfunding websites. According to the research, 302 companies were still trading but  it was not clear whether their  value had increased, one company had been acquired by Europcar ,  58 companies had gone on to raise more money at a higher valuation, 29 companies had gone out of business and 41  companies  could  not be reached, either by telephone or via their websites.</p>
  655. <p style="text-align: left;">If we add together the companies that went out of business and  those that could not be reached, that  means 70 out of 367 companies had lost investors’ money. Using that data, we can estimate that 20% of startups funded through equity crowdfunding do not reach maturity.</p>
  656. <p style="text-align: left;">Having seen that some companies funded through equity crowdfunding succeed while others fail, let us look at different types of risks that investors need to know before they write their first check.</p>
  657. <h3><strong>1) Loss</strong></h3>
  658. <p style="text-align: left;">It is possible for a company to lose value or go bankrupt. Most businesses that seek funding through crowdfunding are early-stage ventures or start-ups. Statistically, many of these companies do not survive past five years. If investors invest in start-ups that do not succeed, they may lose all the money they invested.</p>
  659. <h3><strong>2) Liquidity</strong></h3>
  660. <p style="text-align: left;">With stock, investors can sell at their leisure. With equity crowdfunding, investment is locked in and one can’t get it for years. It is difficult to resell your shares in the company you invested in.</p>
  661. <h3><strong>3) Fraud</strong></h3>
  662. <p style="text-align: left;">There is a lot behind the curtain.  Although regulators that oversee the public stock markets are working to minimize fraud in the equity crowdfunding industry, investors need to be careful.</p>

  664. <p style="text-align: left;">Investors should expect to get less information about their investment than they would with traditional investment products. Companies raising fund via equity crowdfunding are not required to give the same amount of information as a public company. Investors only receive less information such as annual financial statements and notices about key events.</p>

  735. <p style="text-align: left;">As a concept, equity crowdfunding took off in the UK in 2011 with the launch of Crowdcube. Since then, new equity crowdfunding platforms have been fast appearing on the UK funding scene, and they have captured the imagination of the media and the public.</p>
  736. <p style="text-align: left;">Seeders was the first equity crowdfunding platform to be regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Since then the regulatory authority has taken an active role in monitoring all equity crowdfunding activities and offering a regulatory framework to facilitate these developments. Recently, three platforms have said that they have been fully licensed in the UK. These platforms are Lending Works, LendingCrowd and UK Bond Network.</p>
  737. <p style="text-align: left;"> From 2011 to 2014, there was an increase in the number of deals and amount invested in equity crowfunded transactions.  In the fast half of 2014, 101 deals were recorded, up from 7 deals in 2011. Also, the amount invested rose from <a href="http://british-business-bank.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/230315-Equity-crowdfunding-report-final.pdf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">£1.6M in the whole of 2011</a> to <a href="http://british-business-bank.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/230315-Equity-crowdfunding-report-final.pdf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">£23.9M in only the first half of 2014</a>.</p>
  738. <p style="text-align: left;">For equity-based crowdfunding market, 2015 was the year of significant growth with the value of all investments up by 295 percent, <a href="http://www.nesta.org.uk/sites/default/files/pushing_boundaries_0.pdf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">from £84M in 2014 to £332M</a>. A large proportion of the market for the sector came from real estate funds, contributing £87M in 2015. Equity-based crowdfunding (excluding real estate projects) for seed, start-up, and early-stage funding reached £245M in 2015. Throughout all four quarters of 2015, high growth rates were maintained, with the amount invested increasing from Q1 (£38.76M) to Q4 (£81.7M). The average deal size was £523,978, a significant increase from the 2014 average of £199,095,</p>
  739. <p style="text-align: left;">The South East, the South West and London remain the most active areas, both in terms of fundraisers getting and funders offering investment. In 2015, <a href="http://www.nesta.org.uk/sites/default/files/pushing_boundaries_0.pdf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="follow external noopener">720 businesses</a> successfully raised investment via equity-based crowdfunding platforms.  Across platforms, the average acceptance rate was 20.59 percent. On the investor side, about 68,300 investors used equity-based crowdfunding platforms in 2015.</p>

Major platforms in the country include Crowdcube, Seedrs, Syndicate Room, Crowdfunder, CrowdShed , Venture Founders, Angels Den, Code Investing, and Spacehive. In terms of platform success, 71 percent  of the platforms are still operating today.</p>

The report also includes data for equity crowdfunding in the UK from 2011, covering a total of 751 companies and 955 equity crowdfunding rounds.  The data refers to several platforms that provide equity crowdfunding services.</p>
