  218.  &lt;p&gt;When there isn’t even a dreaded vote of confidence, there’s no way forward for the Longhorns baseball coach in Austin.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p id="eFHiF0"&gt;After the &lt;a href="https://www.burntorangenation.com"&gt;Texas Longhorns&lt;/a&gt; fell 10-2 to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in an embarrassing loss in the College Station Regional to end a season that included too many embarrassing losses, the fact that head coach David Pierce fielded a question about his future at the end of his eighth season on the Forty Acres that culminated with a 36-24 season spoke volumes.&lt;/p&gt;
  219. &lt;p id="ACSKIx"&gt;Reporters only ask &lt;em&gt;that&lt;/em&gt; question when &lt;em&gt;that&lt;/em&gt; question becomes unavoidable. And then &lt;em&gt;that&lt;/em&gt; question becomes a leading indicator of a future firing.&lt;/p&gt;
  220. &lt;p id="VmKhgg"&gt;Pierce, for his part, said the only things that he could say.&lt;/p&gt;
  221. &lt;p id="iLzr7N"&gt;“Will I return? That’s not in my hands,” Pierce &lt;a href="https://247sports.com/college/texas/article/texas-baseball-coach-david-pierce-on-his-future-thats-not-in-my-hands-232449993/"&gt;said&lt;/a&gt;. “I know how well that our team plays and I know how well that our staff has worked. I’ve been doing this a long time and we’ve had a ton of success, so I’ll just leave it at that.”&lt;/p&gt;
  222. &lt;p id="vRPGr1"&gt;With a 297-162 record at Texas with one first-place finish and two finishes tied atop the Big 12 Conference, three College &lt;a href="https://www.sbnation.com/world-series"&gt;World Series&lt;/a&gt; appearances, and another Super Regional appearance under Pierce, the Longhorns head coach has found success during his tenure on the Forty Acres, even in the long shadow cast by legendary head coach Augie Garrido, Pierce’s predecessor.&lt;/p&gt;
  223. &lt;p id="eMyHqL"&gt;That success culminated during the 2021 season with an Omaha run that featured Texas as arguably the second-best team in the field it was knocked out of by eventual national champion Mississippi State in two hard-fought contests.&lt;/p&gt;
  224. &lt;p id="usdgK7"&gt;Since then, the trend line hasn’t been as positive for Pierce and his program amid staff changes following the disappointing 2022 campaign that saw the Longhorns fall out of the No. 1 ranking and fail to earn a protected national seed. Texas made it to the College World Series, but flamed out quickly with two straight losses. &lt;/p&gt;
  225. &lt;p id="taI1KV"&gt;Last season, the Horns tied for first place in the Big 12 before once again failing to earn a top national seed and were forced on the road in Palo Alto in a super regional that ended with a heartbreaking loss when right fielder Dylan Campbell lost a fly ball in the antiquated lights at Sunken Diamond to decide the third and final game.&lt;/p&gt;
  226. &lt;p id="Sn0dsC"&gt;The hard ceiling for Texas in Pierce’s eighth season was set early with three losses in the &lt;a href="https://www.crawfishboxes.com"&gt;Astros&lt;/a&gt; Foundation College Classic in early March and eventually bottomed out with midweek debacles against &lt;a href="https://www.goodbullhunting.com"&gt;Texas A&amp;amp;M&lt;/a&gt;-Corpus Christi and UTRGV. A late-season run in a mediocre Big 12 Conference wasn’t enough to create any postseason momentum as Texas lost both games in the &lt;a href="https://www.sbnation.com/big-12-basketball-tournament"&gt;Big 12 Tournament&lt;/a&gt; to land as the No. 3 seed in the College Station Regional.&lt;/p&gt;
  227. &lt;p id="kKkBnt"&gt;So has Pierce had a “ton of success” at Texas, a &lt;a href="http://www.sbnation.com/college-baseball"&gt;college baseball&lt;/a&gt; blue blood with the most wins in Division 1 baseball of all time, the most appearances in the College World Series at 38, the most individual CWS games won with 88 victories, and the most NCAA tournament appearances at 63? &lt;/p&gt;
  228. &lt;p id="Uf49DF"&gt;In the context of those numbers, settling for six national championships  thanks to six runner-up finishes ranks as something as a disappointment, and Pierce’s tenure as the fifth head coach since Billy Disch was hired in 1911 certainly fits into that category as well given the program standards.&lt;/p&gt;
  229. &lt;p id="dzIWsM"&gt;Now a move to the SEC, the nation’s best baseball conference, casts a long shadow over a program in a state of regression over the last three seasons.&lt;/p&gt;
  230. &lt;p id="1orjkK"&gt;In the 10 days since the baseball season ended with two years remaining on Pierce’s contract, the silence from Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte has spoken volumes — were Pierce’s job safe, contract negotiations would be underway and public knowledge.&lt;/p&gt;
  231. &lt;p id="4bfTs3"&gt;Instead, industry insider Kendall Rogers shared a dim outlook on Pierce’s future at Texas last week.&lt;/p&gt;
  232. &lt;p id="VjH3vL"&gt;“His answer over the weekend in College Station was... I didn’t think it was real positive,” Rogers &lt;a href="https://x.com/1045espn/status/1799122702134804918"&gt;said in an appearance on ESPN radio&lt;/a&gt;. “I thought it was kind of telling a little bit. Everything I’m hearing around there is that they’re more than likely going to make a change.”&lt;/p&gt;
  233. &lt;p id="cDfE5l"&gt;According to Rogers, Texas is already engaged in back-channel communications with the agents of high-profile targets like Texas A&amp;amp;M’s Jim Schlossnagle and &lt;a href="https://www.andthevalleyshook.com"&gt;LSU&lt;/a&gt;’s Jay Johnson, two extremely unlikely candidates to take over for Pierce that nonetheless indicate who high Del Conte is aiming. &lt;/p&gt;
  234. &lt;p id="WhCdgF"&gt;“I know how Chris Del Conte works,” Rogers said. “He will want to make a splash. He does not want them to repeat what happened when they hired Pierce. And I think he’s going to try to make a big splash.”&lt;/p&gt;
  235. &lt;p id="C4soAF"&gt;When interim athletics director Mike Perrin hired Pierce in 2016 following Garrido’s forced retirement, the messy search played out publicly with numerous coaches around the country earning contract extensions as high-profile indications they had passed on the Texas job.&lt;/p&gt;
  236. &lt;p id="XzApz8"&gt;Del Conte clearly aims for a more purposeful, professional coaching search. &lt;/p&gt;
  237. &lt;p id="TM7xoR"&gt;When the Texas athletics director opted to move on from football coach Tom Herman after the 2020 season, even after publicly announcing that Herman would return, mere hours passed between Herman’s termination and the announcement of Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as the next Texas head football coach.&lt;/p&gt;
  238. &lt;p id="CwhWpO"&gt;Beyond Sarkisian’s successful tenure, Del Conte’s track record of hiring coaches since taking over on the Forty Acres has been stellar, even without returns on landing Bob Bowman from &lt;a href="https://www.houseofsparky.com"&gt;Arizona State&lt;/a&gt; as the men’s swimming and diving coach to replace the legendary Eddie Reese and women’s golf coach Laura Ianello from Arizona. Both won national championships at their previous stops.&lt;/p&gt;
  239. &lt;p id="HO8iBU"&gt;With the College World Series starting on Friday and running until June 24, Pierce’s eventual replacement may well be in the field, forcing Pierce to remain in limbo indefinitely as Del Conte prepares to make another splash coaching hire.&lt;/p&gt;
  240. &lt;p id="a38mkT"&gt;“The future of this program is going to be in great hands and it’s going to be in a good spot,” Pierce said. “We have so many young players. We’ve got a coaching staff that’s very capable of pushing guys to create the standards that we want: doing it the right way with character and integrity. We’ll continue to do that, and as long as the University of Texas gives me the opportunity, they’ll get everything that I have.”&lt;/p&gt;
  241. &lt;p id="vSWzr5"&gt;By all indications, however, Pierce has already given his last to the Longhorns, setting him up to leave a legacy as a good coach who couldn’t achieve the lofty standards of greatness demanded by college baseball’s all-time winningest program.&lt;/p&gt;
