35.
Last week, the Green Bay Packers dismantled the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football. In week 3, the NFL starts off its week with an AFC game instead, pitting old AFC East rivals against one another in a divisional matchup.

 36.
 37.
However, these two teams are headed in very different directions. The Buffalo Bills are cruising, starting the season 2-0 on the backs of two 30-point offensive outbursts. In week one, they pulled off a miraculous comeback over the Baltimore Ravens, then easily dispatched the New York Jets last Sunday.

 38.
 39.
Miami, on the other hand, looks almost entirely lost. They have allowed 33 points in each of their first two games, and a minus-4 turnover differential is contributing to their issues. Miami ranks last or within the bottom few teams in the league in a host of statistics, but the defense has been particularly porous through two games.

 40.
 41.
Will that trend continue in Buffalo tonight or will Miami find some motivation and creativity in their second of three consecutive divisional games? Tune in to find out!

 209.
The 2024 season was a nightmare for the Cleveland Browns, who stumbled to a 3–14 finish and landed at the bottom of the AFC North. Head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry entered the year with playoff aspirations, but those quickly unraveled. The season turned when quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury, forcing backup Jameis Winston into action.

 210.
 211.
Winston showed flashes of his trademark aggressiveness but never provided stability, throwing for 2,121 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions before being benched late in the year. Without Watson and with Winston’s inconsistency, the Browns’ offense completely collapsed.

 212.
 213.
For 2025, Joe Flacco is back in the mix, and the last time he led the Browns (in 2023) they made the playoffs. His backups are Dillon Gabriel (QB2) and Shedeur Sanders (QB3).

 214.
 215.
The running game offered little relief last season. Star running back Nick Chubb suffered a broken foot midway through the year, and his absence was devastating. In eight games, Chubb mustered just 332 rushing yards on 102 carries (3.3 yards per attempt) with three touchdowns, his lowest output in years. After his injury, the ground attack sputtered further, leaving the team one-dimensional and ineffective.

 216.
 217.
Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was one of the few bright spots, leading the team in receiving and earning a Pro Bowl nod. Other standouts such as defensive end Myles Garrett, cornerback Denzel Ward, and guard Joel Bitonio also represented the team at the Pro Bowl, but individual accolades did little to offset a season defined by dysfunction.

 218.
 219.
Advanced metrics underline just how poor the 2024 Browns were offensively. Using RBSDM’s efficiency models, Cleveland ranked last in the league in both offensive EPA per play (–0.179) and offensive success rate (37.1%). The passing game was plagued by inefficiency, as evidenced by the team’s sub-60% completion percentage and frequent turnovers, while the run game cratered without Chubb.

 220.
 221.
The offense consistently found itself behind schedule and unable to sustain drives, forcing the defense into difficult positions. Through two weeks in 2025 so far, the Browns offense is 30th in EPA per play.

 222.
 223.
Defensively, the Browns regressed significantly from their dominant 2023 form. While the unit still featured elite talent in Garrett and Ward, inconsistency and injuries eroded its effectiveness. Cleveland allowed an average of 228 passing yards per game and too often failed to deliver in high-leverage situations such as third downs and red-zone stands.

 224.
 225.
2025 So Far

 226.
 227.
In 2025, the Browns’ defense ranks 16th in EPA/play with an 8th-ranked run defense. Acme Packing Company’s Justis Mosqueda has more on two weeks’ worth of Browns defense here.

 228.
 229.
Turnover production also declined, limiting their ability to swing games in their favor. Although full defensive efficiency numbers from RBSDM were not available, the eye test and traditional metrics both pointed toward a group that was no longer capable of carrying the roster through offensive struggles.

 230.
 231.
Beyond the on-field disappointment, the Browns became the center of one of the draft’s biggest storylines. Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders entered the process with stellar college production, throwing for over 4,100 yards, 37 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while completing 74% of his passes. Despite those numbers, Sanders slipped to the fifth round, where the Browns selected him at pick 144.

 232.
 233.
Analysts widely expected him to go much earlier, but questions about his arm strength, mobility, sack avoidance, and decision to skip the NFL Combine damaged his stock. Some teams were understandably wary of his personality and the strong presence of his father, Deion Sanders, which fueled the controversy. His dramatic slide was one of the draft’s most debated topics, and the Browns now view him as a developmental option with long-term upside.

 234.
 235.
The 2024 season ultimately exposed deep flaws in Cleveland’s roster and structure. A fragile quarterback situation, lack of offensive depth, and a regressing defense combined to produce one of the league’s worst teams.

 236.
 237.
The Browns are currently 0-2 heading into week three but they entered 2025 with Myles Garrett still anchoring the defense, Jeudy proving he can be a primary target, and the intriguing additions of Gabriel and Sanders as developmental quarterbacks. The front office still faces urgent questions about Watson’s health, the offensive line’s decline, and whether Stefanski remains the right coach to guide a franchise desperate for stability.

 261.
The idea for this article started in the Acme Packing Company Slack, so shoutout to @sammwichh for the inspiration on this one. The premise is pretty simple: Why haven’t the Green Bay Packers added two players since defensive end Brenton Cox Jr. was placed on the injured reserve and receiver Jayden Reed had a pair of surgeries that will clearly cost him several weeks to recover from?

 262.
 263.
It’s time to talk roster math.

 264.
 265.
The way the NFL’s gameday rosters work is that clubs are allowed to have 48 players on gamedays, so long as they roster eight offensive linemen. If they only carry seven, they’re only allowed 47 players. This includes practice squad call-ups.

 266.
 267.
That’s why the Packers called up Brant Banks from the practice squad last week when Aaron Banks and Zach Tom were unable to suit up against the Washington Commanders. Those injuries left them with just seven offensive linemen. Bringing up Brant Banks just gave the team an extra body on gameday that they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

 268.
 269.
Alright, now that that’s established, the math works out to teams needing to scratch 5 players on their 53-man roster each gameday, not including practice squad call-ups. If a player is called up to play, then another member of the 53 doesn’t suit up.

 270.
 271.
So far, the Packers’ healthy scratches this year have been tight end Ben Sims, defensive tackle Warren Brinson and offensive lineman Donovan Jennings, when the offensive linemen have been healthy. If the line isn’t healthy, then swap Jennings with the injured lineman, who in this week’s case could be right tackle Zach Tom. That gets you to three of five…not including the losses of Reed and Cox. 3 + 2 = 5. We did it!

 272.
 273.
Basically, Green Bay hasn’t needed to use these 53-man roster spots quite yet, because it doesn’t change their gameday roster construction much. Cox was replaced by Barryn Sorrell, who was inactive due to a knee injury in Week 1. The Packers already have so many receivers active on gamedays that third-round rookie receiver Savion Williams is hardly seeing the field on offense outside of gadget plays.

 274.
 275.
Truthfully, the best order of business for Green Bay is to probably keep these roster spots open until after their Week 5 bye week, which lines up with when they’ll be able to call up running back MarShawn Lloyd, receiver Christian Watson, offensive lineman John Williams, offensive lineman Jacob Monk and/or defensive end Collin Oliver from injury lists, as they’ll all become eligible to return to the 53-man roster for the first time in Week 6.

 276.
 277.
Meanwhile, if the Packers poached a player off of an opposing team’s practice squad, they would need to guarantee that player three weeks of time on their 53-man roster, per NFL rules. That would push a potential roster opening for an injury list player down the line by at least a week.

 278.
 279.
If Green Bay wants to call up one of their own practice squad players, they can simply bring that player up for gamedays, as none of their practice squad players have exhausted all three of their call-ups allotted for the 2025 season. The only risk they run is the player they want to call up being poached, something that has yet to happen to the team this season.

 280.
 281.
At least until more injuries stack up, the only player pool the Packers are turning down by keeping their roster at 51 players, functionally, are street free agents and waiver claims. For now, Green Bay seems to be cool with passing up those players, along with the salaries that would come with adding them.

 305.
How long has it been since the Green Bay Packers’ defense outshined the team’s offense? Even when the Packers won Super Bowl XLV after the 2010 season, the Aaron Rodgers-led offense was largely the star of the show.

 306.
 307.
2025 feels like the script is flipping, however. Through two weeks, at least, the defense has been dominant while the offense — still effective against playoff teams from a year ago — has left plays out on the field. It’s a fun change to have for fans, but the team would love to be a little more balanced and see the offense hitting on their big play opportunities.

 308.
 309.
The Packers have also prioritized speed on both sides of the football lately, particularly on defense but in the receiving corps as well. Between Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson (whenever he returns from his injury), there are field-stretchers in there, while the defense as a whole is exceptionally fast. It makes for a fun team to watch, and hopefully it will lead to continued success over the next several months.

 347.
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler dropped his Week 3 notebook, which included some buzz about some coordinators who are drawing early interest in the head coaching market. Obviously, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was named.

 348.
 349.

 350.
“While the coaching carousel won’t spin for another three-plus months, some are making early cases to get on the ride. A group of up-and-coming defensive coordinators could get harder looks from teams filling head coaching roles. Jeff Hafley (Packers), Chris Shula (Rams) and Jesse Minter (Chargers) were not heavily featured in this past cycle, but don’t be shocked if that changes. All three coaches have their defenses in the top five in total scoring through two weeks. Packers coach Matt LaFleur firmly believes Hafley has what it takes to be a head coach as early as 2026. Shula is on the NFL league offices’ radar as a prime candidate. And Minter has done an impressive job for Jim Harbaugh dating back to 2024.”

 351.

 352.
 353.
Last year, the only team that interviewed Hafley for a head coaching position was the New York Jets. At the time, LaFleur admitted the NFL’s lack of interest in Hafley as a head coaching candidate surprised him. Now, Packers fans seem to be accepting the idea that Hafley will be gone at the end of the year…but I’m not so sure.

 354.
 355.
If you examine the teams that are struggling right now, most of them have young coaches or are undergoing tactical rebuilds, such as the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans. It’s unlikely that those teams will make a move at head coach after the 2025 season.

 356.
 357.
So which jobs are actually going to come open? I think the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants are a safe bet. After that? I’m not so sure I can pin down a third team.

 358.
 359.
Could the Pittsburgh Steelers make a change with Mike Tomlin’s lack of playoff success? Sure, but that’s certainly not a lock at this point if he can go around .500. The Carolina Panthers might move on from Dave Canales after just two years, but he’s 2-3 in his last five and 4-7 in his last 11. We’ve certainly seen a lot worse starts get a coach a third season at the helm.

 360.
 361.
If you look at first coach fired odds, Mike McDaniel (Dolphins) and Brian Daboll (Giants) are number one and two, but things get really murky after that. The next group of coaches are the types that we’ve already touched on: Kevin Stefanski (Browns), Canales and Brian Callahan (Titans).

 362.
 363.
So don’t put the cart in front of the horse so quickly, Packers fans. We could see a pretty quiet coaching carousel this season. Even if Hafley is a head coaching candidate of interest, there’s no promise that he’ll be whisked away at the end of the year. In the meantime, enjoy the high-level defense.

The latest is the Washington Commanders, the Green Bay Packers’ Week 2 opponent, who just received final approval on their new domed stadium by the D.C. City Council on Wednesday.

 430.
 431.
As of right now, the Browns, Commanders, Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans are in the process of transitioning from outdoor fields to domed stadiums. The Kansas City Chiefs, who currently play outdoors, are also championing a bidding war between the states of Kansas and Missouri right now. If Missouri wins this race to hand over tax money to billionaire Clark Hunt, they’ll renovate Arrowhead. If Kansas gets the nod, they’ll build a domed stadium in their state.

 432.
 433.
If you’re keeping track, three of the four oldest outdoor stadiums in the NFL, all besides Lambeau Field, are at risk of being replaced: Soldier Field (Bears), Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs) and Highmark Stadium (Bills). The Buffalo Bills are already nearing the end of their construction of their new stadium, which thankfully is an outdoor venue.

 434.
 435.
If the NFL loses these venues, the oldest outdoor stadiums, besides Lambeau, will be Hard Rock Stadium in Miami (1987) and EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville (1995). Quickly, we’re racing toward a reality where Lambeau Field is going to be the only open-air stadium built before the millennium.

 472.
 473.
I’m going to give Walker the benefit of the doubt here and say that he’s considering “the last two years” as the 2024 and 2025 seasons, considering that the Packers went 9-8 in 2023. I don’t know what the case would be for that team having a claim to being an undefeated type of squad. If you’ll remember, quarterback Jordan Love didn’t even really find his groove until about mid-season that year.

 474.
 475.
In 2024, though, the Packers lost six games in the regular season. Here were how many points they lost by in those individual games: 5, 2, 10, 3, 2 and 2. So, yeah, outside of Week 9 against the Detroit Lions, they were just one play away from going 16-1 in 2024.

 476.
 477.
Overall, Green Bay has an 8-1 record in games decided by more than eight points since the start of last year. That’s pretty good!

 478.
 479.
I still think that Walker got a little over his skis on this one, considering the Philadelphia Eagles’ 22-10 win in the playoffs last year, but I’m glad this team doesn’t see themselves as an underdog in any matchup moving forward.

 503.
The Green Bay Packers had left guard Aaron Banks (ankle/groin) and right tackle Zach Tom (oblique) return to practice on Wednesday on a limited basis. Between them and cornerback Bo Melton (shoulder), the Packers were only out one member of their active roster: Receiver Jayden Reed…who is probably still enjoying his pain meds post-op.

 504.
 505.
As far as availability for this weekend’s game against the Cleveland Browns goes, Banks made his status clear: He’s playing on Sunday.

 506.
 507.
Beyond returns to the field, here’s what you need to know about the Packers’ first injury report of the week:

 508.
 509.

 510.

Jordan Love to Matthew Golden pic.twitter.com/NXa3mEjMW5
— Matt Schneidman (@mattschneidman) September 17, 2025

 511.

 512.
 513.
Notably, quarterback Jordan Love was shown in a video to be throwing without a brace on his left hand. This is the first time this has been the case since his UCL surgery during the preseason.

 514.
 515.
Beyond Banks, Tom and Melton, the limited participants on Wednesday were cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee) and running back Josh Jacobs (ankle). Both Hobbs and Jacobs played in Week 2, with Hobbs on a pitch count after missing Week 1’s action.

 516.
 517.
Safety Zayne Anderson (knee) is now fully off the injury report, as is defensive end Barryn Sorrell (knee). Anderson hasn’t been active for a game day yet this year due to injury, while Sorrell played limited snaps in Week 2. Sorrell was a replacement for Brenton Cox Jr., who was placed on the injured reserve after dropping out of Week 1.

 518.
 519.
Currently, the Packers still have an open roster spot, as they haven’t added anyone to the 53-man roster since Cox’s change in status. At some point, Green Bay is likely to put Reed on the IR, too.

 521.

 547.
In his pre-practice press conference on Wednesday, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told the media that both left guard Aaron Banks (ankle/groin) and right tackle Zach Tom (oblique) would be returning to practice as “limited” today. Both players were injured in Week 1 and were unable to practice or play in Week 2 on the short turnaround for Thursday Night Football.

 548.
 549.
As a response to the injuries, the Packers’ offensive line shuffled in Week 2. Jordan Morgan, who primarily rotated in at right guard with Sean Rhyan, went to left guard to replace Banks. This allowed Rhyan to become a full-time right guard in the game.

 550.
 551.
At right tackle, drives were split between second-round rookie Anthony Belton and Darian Kinnard, with the majority of those looks going toward Belton at the end of the game.

 552.
 553.
The offensive line should be a big story this week, not just because of injuries but also because of what the Cleveland Browns, the Packers’ next opponent, brings to the table. Like Green Bay’s Week 1 and 2 foes, the Browns pack the box to stop the run and play a lot of man coverage outside to make up for the fact that they blitz their linebackers.

 554.
 555.
It’ll be another game where quarterback Jordan Love will take shots downfield to hopefully take advantage of the defense’s aggression, but he’ll need to be protected well to make the most of those opportunities.
