HMD Global today announced in Russia, the release of Nokia 2.1, 3.1 and 5.1 devices. These are a refresh of the 2,3, and 5 devices released previously. All three devices are Android P ready, with the 3.1 and 5.1 being part of Android One (with 2 years worth of OS updates and 3 years of security patches). The Nokia 2.1 will come with Android Oreo Go Edition, maximising the experience for the lower specs, and consuming less data – great for emerging markets.

Nokia 2.1

<img data-attachment-id="124311" data-permalink="http://mynokiablog.com/2018/05/30/nokia-2-3-5-get-refreshed/nokia_2_1-packshot/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?fit=2000%2C2000" data-orig-size="2000,2000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Nokia_2_1-Packshot" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?fit=266%2C266" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?fit=600%2C600" class="size-large wp-image-124311" src="https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?resize=600%2C600" alt="" width="600" height="600" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?resize=600%2C600 600w, https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?resize=266%2C266 266w, https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?resize=768%2C768 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_2_1-Packshot.png?w=2000 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

The new Nokia 2 (I’m not going to easily get used to saying 2.1), available in three colour options, Blue/Copper, Blue/Silver and Grey/Silver, will be launching in early July 2018, at USD$115.

So what’s new? The Nokia 2.1 rocks a 4,000mAh battery to keep its 5.5-inch HD display powered for longer. The new display is 20% larger than the Nokia 2, and features dual stereo speakers on the front.

Underneath the display, there’s a Snapdragon 425 bringing “50% faster and smoother performance” and 1GB RAM. On the back, you’ve got an 8MP camera to keep the 5MP on the front company.

Nokia 3.1

<img data-attachment-id="124310" data-permalink="http://mynokiablog.com/2018/05/30/nokia-2-3-5-get-refreshed/nokia_3_1-blackchrome-front/" data-orig-file="https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?fit=2000%2C2000" data-orig-size="2000,2000" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"","camera":"","caption":"","created_timestamp":"0","copyright":"","focal_length":"0","iso":"0","shutter_speed":"0","title":"","orientation":"0"}" data-image-title="Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front" data-image-description="" data-medium-file="https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?fit=266%2C266" data-large-file="https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?fit=600%2C600" class="size-large wp-image-124310" src="https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?resize=600%2C600" alt="" width="600" height="600" srcset="https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?resize=600%2C600 600w, https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?resize=266%2C266 266w, https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?resize=768%2C768 768w, https://i1.wp.com/mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Nokia_3_1-BlackChrome-Front.png?w=2000 2000w" sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px" data-recalc-dims="1" />

The Nokia 3 is “the most successful model” in the HMD portfolio of Nokia devices, and the 3.1 looks to build on that. It features a curved 18:9 5.2-inch HD+ screen encased in CNC’d aluminium body.

Powering it, is a Mediatek 6750 octo-core, boosting the performance 50% from the previous gen model. Maintaining the upgraded specs, the rear camera is bumped up to 13MP.

The variants for the 3.1 are both colour and storage/RAM focused, with 2GB/16GB, and 3GB/32GB models, comping in Blue/Copper, Black/Chrome and White/Iron. Kicking off in June, prices will be around EUR139.

Nokia 5.1

Rounding out the new arrivals, is the Nokia 5.1 which carries on the classic design from the previous model. Made from a single block of aluminium, the 5.1 packs a 5.5-inch Full HD+ display (18:9 aspect ratio).

Under this larger screen, is a 2GHZ MediaTek Helio P18 octo-core processor, designed to be 40% faster than before. There’s a 16MP rear shooter near the fingerprint sensor which has now moved to the back of the device.

Available starting in July, for around EUR189, there are 2GB/16GB and 3GB/32GB models, in Copper, Tempered Blue and Black.

At the beginning of this week, HMD announced they have undergone a new round of funding, raising USD$100 million from multiple investors, and sees it hit a market valuation exceeding USD$1 Billion. HMD has outlined its plan for 2018, aiming to”aggressively expand its portfolio of Nokia smartphones and double down on expanding channel reach in strategic markets”.

Since HMD began in Dec 2016, the company has reportedly “shipped more than 70 million Nokia branded phones” in “over 80 countries”.

There are a few more tidbits in the press release, such as “150,000,000 visits” to the Nokia.com/phones page since Jan 2017, 2/3 of consumers purchasing Nokia phones today are under 35, and 4 out of 5 consumers are recommending a Nokia smartphone.

The 5.8″ FHD IPS LCD Display, which is said to encompass 95% of the face of the phone, rocks a 19:9 aspect ratio covered in Gorilla Glass 3. Underneath it all, is a Snapdragon 636 chipset, alongside a range of memory options. There’s a few variants of the X6; 4GB RAM in 32GB, or 4GB/6GB RAM in 64GB. All models will have a microSD slot for expandable storage, fingerprint sensor on the rear, and a USB-C port. Yep – the headphone jack has been dropped. Launching with Android Oreo (8.1), HMD has stated the X6 will be getting Android P when it launches later this year.

As mentioned, the Nokia X6 was announced for the China market, with a price starting at 1,299 Yuan (4GB/32GB) and up to 1,699 Yuan (6GB/64GB). Following the high level of interest, HMD Global CPO Juho Sarvikas took to Twitter to quantify the interest in expanding to other markets. To no surprise, the interest was overwhelming. Could it only be a matter of time until we see this rollout globally?

This week is Google I/O 2018; the event where Google shows of what it’s been working on for the last 12 months across its complete product suite. This we saw a range of innovation from AI based assistants that can book hairdresser appointments for you, to an Android version targeting Internet of Things. Which leads us into this post.

One of the most anticipated tidbits out of the I/O event every year, is to see where Android is heading – this year was no exception. Google showed off Android P, it’s latest iteration of the Android OS. (Side note: I’m tipping it will be P for Pop Tart – though Popsicle seems to be the preferred popular vote)

So what’s new in Android P? (Full list of changes can be found at the Android Developer Blog)

Adaptive Battery and Brightness

App Actions and Slices

Smart reply in notifications

Machine Learning (ML) Kit for Developers

Gestures

Digital Wellbeing (this is cool – basically helps you understand your usage habits and encourages you to disconnect)

Updated UI tweaks

Take a look at the new gestures in play on the Nokia 7 Plus, courtesy of Shimon Das.

Getting the Android P Beta Preview on your Nokia 7 Plus is super simple but there is a process. Be prepared, the below will for you to wipe your phone in order to proceed, as recommended by Nokia. You may be able to do it without, though that choice is on you.

DISCLAIMER: The below steps are performed at your own risk and no liability will be taken.

Head over to Nokia Beta Labs and sign in (or register)

Download the Android P file (you’ll need to flash this later). I would suggest renaming it something simple as you will type the name.

Activate developer mode on your Nokia 7 Plus, by heading to Settings > System > About – and tap Build Number several times to enable the mode.

Now that Dev Mode is enabled, go to it, and enable USB Debugging

Download and Install Minimal ADB and Fastboot from XDA (this is how you’ll flash the update)

Power down your phone and plug it into your computer

Hold Power and Volume Up (+) until you see the Android boot screen

When you see the Android Robot and a “no command” text you’re on the right track.

Hold Power once again, and press Volume Up (+) just once. This should bring up the Recovery menu

Choose Factory Reset (Volume keys to scroll through options and power to select). Then confirm to complete reset.

Once the Reset is over, go back to recovery mode and scroll to “Update from ADB”

Open command prompt (Win + R – type CMD and hit enter)

In the window, type (without quotes) “adb sideload C:\file\path\to\Update.Zip”replacing the file path and name of the file to where you have the file saved and what you renamed it.

Progress bar for the install should show in screen. Once its complete, Select “Reboot Now”

Enjoy Android P on your Nokia 7 Plus

The source video has been pulled but Evan has kindly put a mirror on his tweet. The act of removing the video further validates to Evan the authenticity of it (like that time the Nokia N9/800 video got pulled).

I’m not to sure about this screen proportion anymore. Â I felt 2017 is spoiling me with the lesser bezel approach. For some reason I had read some ‘leaks’ of info suggesting Nokia may also have less bezels but that may not be the case.Though apparently HTC will still keep pushing this for now too.

Comments from Rajiv Suri:

Nokia’s first quarter 2017 results demonstrated our improving business momentum, even if some challenges remain. We slowed the rate of topline decline and generated healthy orders in what is typically a seasonally weak quarter for us. We also continued to see expansion of cross-selling across our full portfolio, delivered excellent gross margins and improved group-level profitability.

The power of our end-to-end portfolio was again evident in our first quarter results. We saw encouraging stabilization in Mobile Networks topline, our strategy to build a strong software business gained momentum in Applications & Analytics, and Nokia Technologies saw significant year-on-year improvement in sales. This progress offset relative weakness in Fixed Networks and IP/Optical Networks, and allowed us to maintain Networks’ strong gross margin – which was among the strongest Networks has ever delivered for a Q1.

Mobile Networks was clearly the highlight of the quarter. A combination of robust market interest in our advanced LTE solutions, including closing the quarter with 145 4.5G customers, and ongoing cost discipline allowed us to get closer to stabilizing our topline while delivering improved profitability.

Applications & Analytics also showed significant, even if early, signs of improvement. Sales were roughly flat compared to the same quarter last year and new orders were robust. As we move forward, we remain focused on improving profitability in this business.

Fixed Networks, which had an excellent 2016, was impacted by several large deployments coming to an end. Despite this, we are seeing growing traction in cross-selling in markets where Nokia has traditionally been strong, and are continuing to invest in the promising cable market.

In IP/Optical Networks our business is heavily weighted towards communication service providers, and that market is currently quite soft. We are making good progress in expanding our business to new customers, including large internet companies where growth is strong, and expect that a coming IP product refresh will strengthen our competitive position. In addition, we are taking steps to ensure that our cost base is appropriate for current market conditions while continuing to invest as needed to maintain long-term competitiveness. Despite these challenges, I am confident that we are taking the right steps in the right way to deliver medium-term improvements in both IP/Optical Networks and Fixed Networks.

Overall, given Nokia’s performance in the first quarter, I am optimistic about the year ahead, even if cautiously so. Our competitive position is strong, we are executing well, and, as a result, we are able to confirm our guidance for full-year 2017.

It’s a modern 2017 curved corners and maximal screen with virtually invisible bezels. It’s a very nice looking phone indeed.

The fingerprint reader seems to be in a more convenient location and the screen isn’t simply taller (that’s a plus if you’re just after a bigger display and apps that don’t need stretching, but it could mean possibly more difficult to hold depending on overall dimensions).
