We find when our clients have a passion for what they do, they are committed and focused on making sure their message reaches their desired audience.

Celeste Viciere is a licensed mental health clinician who believes in the power of intentional living. Celeste has a goal to help people shift their thinking from negative to positive. She is a champion for mental health and mental health awareness. In fact, Celeste is so dedicated to this area that she host sessions on Periscope for those who may not be able to afford therapy sessions.

Recently, we had an opportunity to speak with Celeste about her work, her practice, her thoughts on mental health, her upcoming book, “365 Days of Intentional Living,” and her work with Zerflin.

Listen to the interview below:

http://zerflin.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Celeste-Interview-Zerflin.mp3

The goal going into this project was to find the best solution for Celeste that would help her convey her message. Celeste wanted something calming and peaceful that also had the potential to reach the widest audience possible.

At Zerflin, we work with our clients to come up with the best possible solution. To us, it’s more than just making book covers or business cards. We are helping you realize your voice and your dream. Celeste had some initial cover concepts but we were able to help her eliminate the ones that did not meet her goal.

The final result was a great design that not only could go on her book but could be used across different mediums like Celeste’s website or even coffee mugs (which are for sale on her website). Perhaps one of the most moving designs is of a feeling chart that we designed with Celeste.

For too long in America’s history, the emotional well-being of marginalized people have largely been ignored. In fact, many are inclined to believe that negative actions by people of color are inherent to their nature and are not a result of emotional distress.

Be sure to pick up your copy of the Feelings Chart here.

Christianity can be polarizing and difficult to navigate. Within the context of individual beliefs, different doctrines and different methods can make it difficult for people to come together and learn. Within the overall context of Christianity, it can be seen as an oppressive institution especially for women, people of colour and members of the LGBTQAI community. So in a time where we desperately need messages of hope, love and peace, the question becomes how do you get this message to all people without alienation or marginalization?

Recently, we had an opportunity to help a local group called The Slate Project. The Slate Project’s motto is, “Church with a clean slate.” The idea is to take modern Christianity back to its roots. Back to a time where people of all nations, backgrounds and beliefs could come together to learn and share without judgement and fear of reprisal.

We caught up with one of the founding members of The Slate Project, Jason Chestnut. We wanted to find out why the group chose Zerflin, the idea behind The Slate Project and how they are revolutionizing how we use social media.

http://zerflin.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/Slate-Project-Interview.m4a

It is always good to do work for a wonderful organization like The Slate Project. When Slate asked us to work with them, we really wanted the work we did for them to speak to who they are as an organization and the good work they are doing. We decided to do a complete branding package that included a logo, social media headers and designs. This way, the Slate Project brand will be consistent and easily recognizable.

Baltimore is a city in need of major change. Last year’s protests and uprising surrounding the murder of Freddie Gray seemed to bring to head a number social issues the city has faced for years.

Tariq Touré, by his own admission, “wears many hats.” Among them are creative, author, poet and advocate. This award winning Muslim artist has been praised for his creative spirit and his commitment to being a change agent in Baltimore.

Since meeting Tariq, we have had the pleasure of creating some interesting promotional material for him. From bookmarks to flyers to t-shirt designs, Zerflin has helped Tariq promote his message, his advocacy and his writing.

Being on the front lines of social and political justice can be draining. So, how does someone so involved and invested in change take care of himself? Recently, we had an opportunity to speak with Tariq about that very thing. In our conversation, he speaks about his work and his self care regimen.

We would like to congratulate Tariq on winning best poetry book in Baltimore by the City Paper for his book, “Black Seeds.” We are very honored to be part of this project!

Fanshen Cox-DiGiovanni is an award winning actor, producer and educator who’s been featured in the New York Times, and on NPR. We were asked by Fanshen to create designs for a few projects of hers including One Drop Of Love and her non-profit organization, Mixed Roots Stories.

Recently, we had an opportunity to sit down with Fanshen to discuss her upbringing, how her upbringing shaped her One Drop Of Love project and why she chose to work with Zerflin.

Zerflin: I am borrowing this question from a podcast that I listen to and love: what do you do and why?

Fanshen: I love Another Round. I’m an Actor, Producer, Writer and Educator. Since I was little I’ve felt passionate about using theater and media to facilitate positive social change. I am certain this is what I was born to do.

Zerflin: Can you tell us about your upbringing? Specifically, was there a moment where you were made to feel different?

Fanshen: We moved around a lot until I was 9, and in each new location I was confronted (sometimes euphemistically and sometimes in a flat-out racist way) by someone who made a point to express how I was different.

Zerflin: When did you embrace the things that made you different and allowed yourself to operate freely in that space?

Fanshen: What made me feel different is that I’m Black, and that means I’m not able to operate freely in most spaces. And yet, my skin tone, my positive relationship with my white mother and other white people means I have had more freedom than others – everywhere. I think the closest I feel to being free is when I’m being sensitive to the experiences of those around me, particularly those who have not ever had the privilege of ‘living freely,’ and am intentional about helping make positive changes so they can.

Fanshen: One Drop is a multimedia one-woman theater show on the intersections of race, class and gender. It is an exploration of the historical construction of race, and of a path towards reconciliation within out intimate relationships. I’ve travelled across the country over the last 3 years with the show, and will be making my Broadway debut for a short run this fall.

I hope to encourage everyone to consider critically and openly the ways that race, class and gender play a role in every aspect of our lives – and particularly in our most important relationships.

Zerflin: How does One Drop Of Love speak to you personally?

It is autobiographical and I learn new things about myself during every performance. Also, the audience reactions – especially the stories they share afterwards – move me deeply. Young people who attend and speak after leave me tremendously hopeful about the future.

Recently, we were commissioned to create a piece of art that gives an account of America’s history with slavery. This graphic tattoo is a timeline that highlights key points in Slavery of the African Diaspora in America. A timeline that is too very often dismissed and disregarded.

“…but slavery was sooo long ago.”

We’ve heard this quote over and over throughout the course of modern American history. In an attempt to urge black people to “move on” and to recognize just how good they have it in America, this dismissive and tone deaf statement attempts to transform relatively recent history into ancient history or myth.

However, when looking at this graphic, it is very clear that American slavery and segregation was not so long ago. In fact, it is very possible to have conversations with many African Americans who have vivid memories of Jim Crow South and the racist and subversive practices in the North.

America cannot escape its past. This country’s history is stained with the blood of thousands and its foundation built on the backs of enslaved men, women and children. America’s complete history cannot be told without including the horrors of slavery and its long-lasting effects.

The enslavement of African peoples by Europeans began in 1441 with Prince Henry the Navigator of Spain. However, because this tattoo is specific to the enslavement of the African Diaspora in America and because it includes American segregation, we felt that it did not make sense to include a full timeline of the entire diaspora.

For this graphic tattoo, here’s what we included:

1619: Arrival of “20 and odd” Africans in late August, on an English warship the “White Lion.”

1865: Slavery abolished in the United States of America.

1954: Supreme Court Declares School Segregation Unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education.

The colors; Red, Black, Yellow and Green, are colors used in PanAfrican symbolism and design. As the client is an African American, we wanted to represent that history and culture in the colors themselves as they wraps around the wrist.

There are DOZENS of things that could be added. Because it’s a tattoo design, there is only so much we can add. But that is exactly why the green area is untitled. Green doesn’t necessarily mean good. The untitled green area recognizes that full equality for African American still has yet to be fully realized. When it comes down to it, people are STILL fighting for equality; whether it’s for city services, fair treatment by police, education, or wages.

To suggest that an entire community of people forget the stain of slavery and its adverse effects is a selfish attempt to absolve this country of its sins. That is why we are happy to create pieces like this graphic tattoo because these pieces help to keep this country accountable for its legacy of slavery. Without looking backward and acknowledging the horrific past, we cannot fully move forward.

If you are looking to bring your ideas to life for you, your company or your brand, contact us! We are here to help.

In an article for “Creative Juice,” the author says, “Often we focus on creating a site that includes lots of beautiful photographs and graphics, hoping this will add up to a good design.” They go on to say, “While visuals and bold colors are useful in attracting visitors, too much can distract from your website’s purpose.”

As all of our clients know, here at Zerflin, we create “real good design.” Delivering that experience to our clients often means forgoing many of the elements and themes found in a lot of today’s web designs. Presenting “real good design” to our clients means that we understand that too many design elements may cause a website to lose its attractiveness and can be overwhelming to visitors.

Take our recent work for Peace & A Cup Of Joe. While the design elements are much different from the elements found in our work for Bainbridge Bethesda, each element presented in our design of Peace & A Cup Of Joe’s website is specifically tailored to make the site functional, informative and easy to use.

The Lead Designer on this project, Tamika Jancewicz, has a Computer Engineering background. For her, functionality is always key. For this design, Tamika found inspiration in websites and designs that she researched online. However, a more focused approach would be needed in order to successfully combine her overall design inspiration with the design and needs of Peace & A Cup Of Joe.

On the homepage, for example, a beautiful photo of the cafe seamlessly melts into stunning earth-tone colors, a simple yet vibrant background and whimsical yet functional layout. As a patron of the cafe, Tamika appreciates the unique nuances that make up Peace & A Cup Of Joe. Tamika says, “The setup is very earthy and it has a very cool vibe.”

While Tamika drew heavy from her design inspirations, she did not forget the major focus of the website. The idea is to create a site that is both visually pleasing and functional. Visitors need to quickly access key information such as events, about, reviews and location.

For the menu page, Tamika had to strike a delicate balance between presenting information without it being too much for visitors to take in while making the page visually pleasing to convey the vibrancy of Peace And A Cup of Joe. She had to “make it so people could see the variety without being overwhelmed.” By separating the different meal categories in a side menu, placing item descriptions in the middle with combo options in another side menu, Tamika was able to effectively present all of Peace And A Cup Of Joe’s offerings without overwhelming visitors. The background uses a combination of earthy and vibrant tones keep the attention of visitors as they view the delicious menu options.

“Real good design” is not only the Zerflin mantra, it is something that we practice with each and every design we complete. As Tamika proved with her simple and elegant design of the Peace & A Cup Of Joe website, it is possible to create a visually pleasing and functional website without adding obsessive amounts of features and themes.

In the world of media and web design, innovation is key. The ability to stay ahead of the curve and create new waves in this field is enough to separate the best design companies from the mediocre ones.

For a few years, we have had the pleasure of forming a great partnership with The Bainbridge Companies. During the course of our partnership, we have created some stunning and fluid designs for many of their sites. Most recently, Bainbridge came to us in hopes of redesigning the website for their Bainbridge Bethesda High-Rise Apartments.

For this project, we wanted to go beyond anything we’ve ever done before. We wanted to introduce exciting and revolutionary innovations in media and web design that would further separate Zerflin from other design companies. Quite honestly, this would prove to be our biggest project for The Bainbridge Companies.

For starters, we wanted an element that would properly welcome and introduce visitors to Bainbridge Bethesda. This element needed to give visitors a proper view of the campus, the community and lifestyle Bainbridge Bethesda offers. To do this, we wrote, shot, narrated and produced a video presentation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efo9hn8ZLOY#action=share

This presentation incorporated amazing flyovers of the Bainbridge Bethesda High-Rise Apartments, simple yet elegant graphic design and stunning footage that captures both the charm and excitement of Bethesda and the Bainbridge Bethesda community. However, we didn’t want to stop there.

Having maps on residential sites is very common. They offer visitors a glimpse of what they can expect from their potential surrounding area. However, we felt that we could enhance this experience for visitors to give them a more well-rounded view of the Bainbridge Bethesda community and its surrounding area.

We incorporated social maps into the design that would give potential residents a true sense of the community. Using popular networks Yelp, FourSquare and Instagram, we were able to provide visitors with up to date photos from people in the Bethesda area and honest feedback of local restaurants and shops.

We were also able to add more direct search results to the map feature by allowing visitors to curate the most popular activities and attractions in Bethesda. Using this feature, potential residents are able to find area grocery stores, restaurants, fitness centers and entertainment areas.

Bethesda is just minutes from Washington, DC. Many residents will use the DC Metro to commute to and from work and/or major DC attractions. We added live Metro updates to the maps section to give commuters up to the minute DC Metro information. We are certain that these features will really help to enhance the user experience.

Finally, by adding other great features like a Pinterest-style blog, automatic office hours and fully optimized mobile, tablet and web formats, we believe the Bainbridge Bethesda High-Rise Apartments website is a unique, immersive and interactive experience.

I used Gradient Meshes, the first time I’d ever used them for such an involved project. The logo had several challenging points; the music staff (which also doubled as a paintbrush) looped inside the theatrical masks twice. Also, the masks themselves curved backward so that the inside of the mask could be seen through the eyeholes and mouth. Added to that, the light source was from the upper left, and caused the whole thing to cast a shadow with a spotlight. But the end result turned out well! 3actrical is meant to be a combination of Theatre, Art and Music, all wrapped into one.

No…we’re not making one. Our partner and good friend, Nick Troy has made one though, and we’re proud of the hard work and dedication put into this new project. So much so that we worked on the splash page, and when the time is right, we’ll conjure up a full website.

He and his comrade, Brian Gallagher, have come together with an amazing cast and crew, with NO FUNDS, to put this new film together, and we can’t wait to see the final product.

Inspired by a poster designed by the talented Monica Obaga, the whole purpose of the splash page, at this point, is to highlight the Kickstarter campaign they are running right now.

They need to raise enough money so they can make an already good film great. So check out their Kickstarter and support!
