There’s a few reasons why reconditioned stairlifts are such a popular choice with our customers. Obviously a reconditioned stairlift is much more affordable than a brand new stairlift. But that raises the question in many people’s minds as to the quality. “Will a second hand stairlift that’s been refurbished give me more problems later?” is an often asked question.

It’s a valid question and one which we answer with our high standards of refurbishing only high quality stairlifts, plus our 2 year warranty which we offer on our reconditioned units. That means you’re covered for parts, labour and call out charges for a full 2 years.

Not every company offers this and you need to pay attention to the fine print – some companies will offer only a partial warranty, which doesn’t cover all of these things – call-outs, labour, and parts!

A reconditioned Stannah

Why Reconditioned Stairlifts Are So Popular – Cost

Of course the most attractive thing about a reconditioned stairlift is the price is much less than a brand new one. You can shave thousands off a stairlift price by buying a pre-used unit which is refurbished. Our new stairlifts start at £1,850 for straight stairlift but only £1,250 for a reconditioned straight. Curved stairlifts start at £4,990 brand new and just £2,950 for a second hand (refurbished) unit.

Of course a stairlift is made specifically for your staircase and this means the cost is always going to vary. But across the board, you can save between 20 and 40% in most cases when buying second hand. With more expensive setups such as with very awkward stairs which require a specialist lift, the cost will rise. Curved staircase setups are more expensive too. So for a multiple staircase setup with a specialist stairlift for narrow stairs, for example, a reconditioned stairlift can save you even more.

High Quality Brands Vs. Low Quality Brands

Often people make the mistake of thinking a cheaper, new stairlift will last longer than a reconditioned one! But some makes are far superior to others. Our go-to model for a reconditioned units is Stannah. They offer the best longevity and even a reconditioned Stannah can outlast a lesser model which is purchased brand new. That’s because the build quality and engineering of Stannah stairlifts is second to none!

Their motors are sturdier and their build quality is of such a high quality that it can outlast lesser models when it comes to break-downs! Buy cheap often means buy twice – so it’s a false economy. When you buy a reconditioned stairlift from us, you know you have both quality and affordability.

While newer models will generally last longer (all things being equal), due to newer parts, all things aren’t equal! Stannah’s are some of the best stairlifts and a brand new one will cost much more than a lower quality stairlift, of a different brand.

Buy using top brands and models for our reconditioned units, we offer the best of both worlds! Longevity and reliability at an affordable price.

Summary – Reconditioned or New?

So, should you buy a new stairlift or a reconditioned one? There’s pros and cons of both. Buying brand new can give you extra piece of mind knowing all the parts are brand new and you’ll get a longer warranty. But be aware certain brands will cause more problems later on when they start breaking down! Buy cheap, buy twice, often applies to brand new stairlifts.

Reconditioned stairlifts give you a more affordable option if you’re on a budget. Plus, we offer full 2 year warranties on all our reconditioned units, so you’re getting piece of mind and affordability to boot! If you’re still on the fence, speak to one of our team who can help advise you of the best option for you. Also, we don’t always have the model you want in stock if you’re buying reconditioned, so it will depend on your particular staircase layout too.

Many of our customers ask us whether a stairlift can be installed on a very narrow and steep staircase. In most cases, the answer is an emphatic “yes”. Although not every staircase is suitable for a stairlift, we have found a solution which works for those difficult and awkward staircases which present a problem in some situations.

So if you have been turned down for a stairlift installation, take heart! There is likely a solution. It comes in the form a specific stairlift make which is perhaps the slimmest and most definitely the most agile stairlift on the market.

Fitting A Stairlift On Narrow, Steep Stairs

The Flow X is the stairlift which solves many a problem when it comes to super slim/narrow stairlifts for narrow stairs. Looking at the above dimensions of the stairlift, you would be surprised that it can fit on a staircase as narrow as 62cm in width. That’s because the stairlift can adapt and tilt and pivot, turning sideways as it descends/ascends the stairs.

It has what’s called ASL (Advanced Swivelling and Levelling) which is a patented technology unique to the Flow X from Thyssen Krupp (now Access BDD). This tech means the stairlift can travel while pivoting and tilting. In short, it means it will fit more staircases than pretty much any other stairlift can!

The difficulty with a narrow staircase is often the width. With most stairlifts the width of the staircase is the limiting factor because most lifts face perpendicular to the wall/bannister rail. But the Flow X can face downwards/upwards in the direction of travel, saving valuable leg room.

How To Know Whether Your Stairs Will Accommodate A Narrow Stairlift?

So, how can you know whether your stairs need a Flow and will accommodate it if it’s a close call? Firstly, we don’t always recommend this particular type of stairlift. But it’s the “go-to” stairlift for difficult and narrow fittings where another one cannot be used due to space issues.

The Flow X is a more expensive model than most, as you would expect. So we often recommend one of our cheaper, reconditioned stairlifts which generally will fit a narrow staircase. But for especially narrow and difficult fittings, the Flow X is often the only option available.

We also recommend the Stannah models due to their design they can sit very close to the wall/bannister rail, creating much needed space.

This might be because of a narrow hallway, an awkward door or a particularly narrow staircase. It might be all three of these mean a Flow X is the only option. Call us for a free survey of your stairs, and we can give you a definitive answer. All our assessments are free, and you’re under no obligation to buy from us whether your staircase allows for an installation or not.

Call 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page for a free assessment.

Here’s a stairlift installation we did on a narrow set of stairs. Here, we used the Flow X because it was the only stairlift which would work with the under stair compartment at the bottom and the spiral style staircase.

Minimum Stair Width For A Stairlift: What You Need to Know

One of the most common questions we hear from customers is: “Is my staircase wide enough for a stairlift?”

The good news is that stairlifts are designed to work in a wide variety of homes, including those with very narrow stairs. However, there are minimum width requirements to ensure safety and comfort, and these vary depending on the type of stairlift you choose.

What Is the Minimum Stair Width for a Stairlift?

The minimum technical width for a stairlift is 61cm at the narrowest point of the stairs. The Flow X is the slimmest and most agile stairlift on the market, with its pivot and tilt patented technology it can avoid difficult turns which other stairlifts are incapable of.

Straight stairlifts: Most modern straight stairlifts require a staircase that’s at least 700mm (27.5 inches) wide. Some slimline models can fit on staircases as narrow as 660mm (26 inches).

Curved stairlifts: Because of the bend and turning radius, curved stairlifts typically need a little more room, usually 700mm–750mm (27.5–29.5 inches).

Perch or standing stairlifts: These are designed for very tight spaces or users who struggle to bend their knees. They can often be installed on staircases as narrow as 610mm (24 inches).

👉 If your stairs are narrower than this, specialist solutions may still be possible. For example, the Flow X stairlift is one of the most advanced options for tight spaces, thanks to its automatic swivel technology that adjusts the seat while travelling. It can navigate staircases as narrow as 61cm in width!

If you’re worried your staircase is too small, don’t panic. There are several space-saving options available:

Final Thoughts

The minimum stair width for a stairlift is typically between 610mm and 750mm, depending on the model and staircase design.

If you’re looking for a cheap stairlift, or ways to save money on a stairlift purchase, we’ve got some helpful advice for you!

Cheap Stairlifts – Get A Reconditioned Stairlift

Here at UK Stairlifts Leeds, we help people get large discounts on their stairlift purchases by offering reconditioned stairlifts. We also offer ex-display items at a discount. Ask our staff for more information.

Call us on 0800 046 3438.

A reconditioned stairlift is one of the best ways to cut costs on a stairlift. It allows you to still have peace of mind, but make a hefty saving. Our reconditioned stairlifts come with a 2 year warranty, giving you peace of mind and assurance that your stairlift will last.

We properly vet all the stairlifts we buy for refurbishment and thoroughly reconditioned them with new parts and batteries.

Cheap Stairlifts – Making Savings On A Stairlift – Compare Fitters

Another way to make savings on a stairlift is to shop around. All stairlift companies generally provide a free home assessment. But we can often feel compelled to go with the first offer because someone has given us their time. However, not all stairlift providers offer the same prices. In fact, you can often find a large discrepancy between the different installers.

Don’t rush into agreeing to an installation after your first assessment. Get a couple of quotes at least. You can even ask for a discount if you’ve got a couple of companies vying for your business.

Cheap Stairlifts – Making Savings On A Stairlift – VAT Exemption

If you, or the user of the stairlift is registered as disabled, or over 60 you qualify for a VAT exemption. Checkout the VAT on mobility aids section of the UK government website for details.

Most suppliers of stairlifts will know about this and automatically apply it to your purchase. But the more you know about it the better informed you’ll be to make sure you get this discount.

Warranty

Just because you’re looking for a bargain stairlift doesn’t mean you should compromise on quality or peace of mind. A stairlift is an important mobility device which should give you more freedom in your home for years to come.

The warranty on a stairlift is an important piece of the jigsaw, and if you go for a very cheap supplier, this raises the question of reliability and assurance.

Here at UK Stairlifts Leeds, we provide a full 2 year warranty with our stairlifts, giving you excellent value and peace of mind!

Summary

When buying a stairlift for yourself or a loved one, you can save quite a hefty amount if you:

Shop around and compare prices

Haggle – use multiple offers to counter offer with other suppliers

Choose a reconditioned stairlift with a good warranty – we offer 2 years.

Is My Staircase Too Narrow for a Stairlift?

If you live in Leeds or the wider West Yorkshire area and have a slim, twisting, or awkward staircase, you might be wondering: is it too narrow for a stairlift? The good news is that in most cases, the answer is no.

Modern stairlift technology means that even very narrow stairs – including those with tight corners or unusual layouts – can often accommodate a safe, comfortable lift. At UK Stairlifts Leeds, we’ve fitted stairlifts in some of the tightest spaces imaginable, even in homes where other companies said it couldn’t be done.

How Narrow Is Too Narrow?

The width required for a stairlift depends on the make and model, as well as the shape of your staircase. For example, the Thyssen Flow X can typically handle staircases as narrow as 61cm, thanks to its unique ability to pivot and travel sideways. In certain situations, our engineers have even installed them on slightly narrower stairs.

For staircases around 67.9cm wide, the Stannah 260 is another excellent choice, designed with a seat position further back on the rail to maximise knee and legroom.

Narrow Staircases in Leeds Homes

Many older properties in Leeds – from Victorian terraces in areas like Headingley, Armley, and Chapel Allerton, to 1930s semis in Moortown and Roundhay – have compact staircases that can make fitting a stairlift seem impossible. But with the right stairlift model and custom installation, we can almost always find a solution.

What If My Stairs Have Obstacles?

Obstacles like radiators, doorways, or tight turns don’t automatically mean you can’t have a stairlift. With the right design, curved rails, and space-saving features like folding arms and footrests, we can often work around these challenges without major alterations to your home.

Standing or Perching Stairlifts for Narrow Stairs

If your stairs are extremely tight and you’re physically able to stand or perch while travelling, a standing stairlift might be an option. These take up less space than a seated model, but they’re not suitable for everyone – especially if your mobility needs may change in the future. In most cases, we recommend a seated stairlift for long-term comfort and safety.

The Best Way to Find Out

Every staircase is different, so the only way to know for certain is to have a free home assessment. Our Leeds-based engineers will measure your stairs, discuss your needs, and recommend the most suitable stairlift for your home and budget.

Looking for stairlifts for awkward stairs? If you’ve been turned down for a stairlift installation, or, if you’re concerned about an awkward fitting, we can help! A few years ago we were turning away customers because our stairlifts wouldn’t fit in certain houses. This wasn’t ideal!

Not only were we turning away customers, but we felt we we letting people down who desperately needed help with mobility in their home. We’re passionate about helping people with stairlift installation – it’s why we do what we do! We get to use our expertise to offer life changing equipment, helping people to be independent in their homes! So we looked into alternative solutions when it came to difficult, awkward and narrow stairs. See also our post stairlifts for narrow stairs.

Stairlifts For Awkward Stairs

We use a couple of stairlifts for awkward stairs, but the one which shines out the most is the Flow X stairlift from Access BDD (formerly Thyssen). The Flow X is the most nimble stairlift on the market. It can navigate staircases as narrow as 61cm in width.

Most stairlifts too have an outward facing chair, which limits their ability on very narrow staircases. The staircase width usually has to be at least the distance from your lower back to your knee/toe, whichever is the greater, (plus the room for the chair).

This is the biggest limiting factor when it comes to staircases which are particularly narrow. The Flow X gets around this problem by facing the user downstairs.

This saves a massive amount of leg room. But, it also brings up the problem of corners on a curved staircase. However, this isn’t a problem for the Flow X. It has a patented technology known as the ASL (Advanced Swivel and Levelling) which means it can pivot the seat while moving and staying level. This is something most stairlifts (even advanced ones) cannot do.

Stairlifts For Awkward Stairs – Rail

The rail of the Flow X is also similarly versatile, allowing the stairlift to fit on difficult and awkward staircases which have narrow corridors or doorways at the top or bottom. Some stairlifts would need a run-off rail at the bottom, to allow the stairlift to turn for easy exit/entry. But this doesn’t work well when there’s a doorway or corridor at the base of the stairs.

The Flow X rail can be customised to fit almost any situation. Here you can see its “drop nose” rail cleverly avoiding a doorway at the base of the stairs.

This might present the problem of stairlift parking, for some stairlifts. But not the Flow X – it allows you to park the stairlift anywhere on the rail. Simply call the lift when you need it using the remote control situated at the top and bottom of the staircase.

Here’s the top of the same installation. As you can see, there’s a doorway here too. Not a problem with the customised rail.

Other Stairlifts For Awkward Stairs

We also use the Stannah 260 for awkward stairs. Stannah have done their homework. This allows for a stairlift to be fitted on a very narrow staircase. Stannah have cleverly designed their stairlifts to be very versatile as far as measurements are concerned. It allows the ride position of their stairlift to be very far back against the wall/bannister rail – allowing for more legroom. Here’s a reconditioned Stannah 260 on a curved staircase.

The fully customised rail allows for a very close fitting of the stairlift against the wall or the handrail (pictured above). This gives the user more legroom on a narrow staircase. The Stannah 260 is the “go-to” stairlift for a narrow staircase in most situations.

But in more extreme cases, we will use the Flow X stairlift when nothing else will fit! If you’re on a budget, we also specialise in reconditioned stairlifts to suit your budget. So whatever your budget and needs, we can offer a solution!

While brand new models offer reliability, second-hand stairlifts present a cost-effective option without compromising safety or functionality. In this article, we guide you through what to consider when choosing a quality second-hand stairlift, whether you have straight or curved stairs.

Second Hand Straight Stairlifts

Straight stairlifts are designed for staircases with no turns or bends. Here are the most important factors to keep in mind:

Accurate Staircase Measurements

Precise measurements of your staircase’s length, width and height are essential to ensure the track fits correctly. The footplate must finish at the right positions at both the top and bottom of the stairs, which cannot be achieved with an incorrect track length.

Weight Capacity

Be sure to choose a model that safely supports the user’s weight. Many UK stairlifts accommodate up to 20 stone (127 kilograms).

Safety Features

Check that seat belts, safety sensors and emergency stop controls are all in good working order and comply with required safety standards.

Warranty and Service

When purchasing a reconditioned stairlift, the original manufacturer’s warranty is usually void. Look for a trusted dealer who offers a robust warranty and after-sales support.

Second Hand Curved Stairlifts

Curved stairlifts are specially made to navigate bends, landings or corners. Keep these key points in mind when considering a second-hand curved stairlift:

Customisation and Components

The track must be newly created to match your staircase’s layout; it cannot be reused safely. However, you can still purchase a used powerpack and seat to reduce costs while ensuring a custom fit.

Professional Installation

A curved system requires professional fitting and should not be attempted as a DIY project. Make sure all necessary components, such as brackets and fixings, are included and that you receive clear manufacturer instructions.

Testing and Certification

Request evidence of safety tests or certifications to confirm the system complies with relevant standards and is safe to use.

Choosing Wisely

Safety functionality and compatibility with your staircase are the priorities when selecting a second-hand stairlift. Perform due diligence, assess the condition of the unit and rely on reputable dealers or professionals for guidance.

A well-chosen second-hand stairlift offers independence and accessibility at a fraction of the price of a new model.

If you or a loved one is starting to find the stairs a challenge, installing a stairlift can significantly improve independence and comfort at home. But for many families, the cost of a brand-new stairlift may feel out of reach. That’s where reconditioned stairlifts in Leeds offer a smart, cost-effective alternative.

In this blog post, we’ll explore why pre-owned, recycled, and refurbished stairlifts are not only budget-friendly but also reliable and eco-conscious, and how you can find the perfect fit through UKStairlifts Leeds.

What Are Reconditioned Stairlifts?

A reconditioned stairlift is a previously owned stairlift that has been thoroughly inspected, serviced, and tested by professional engineers to meet safety and performance standards. These stairlifts are often sourced from customers who no longer need them and are restored to “like-new” condition.
